I was thoroughly enjoying this until the end.......2007-07-09
Wow... this book made me angry at the end. While this is a simple book filled with simple characters, its directly applicable to modern life and current events. With that in mind, the very end of the novel infuriated me. As the book summary tells the ending I am neither spilling nor spoiling when I say that the overall situation is solved by the hand of god. Why was it necessary to have a deity come in and fix everything? Why were the characters incapable of coming to their own solution? Worse than that is the fact that every single person in the story, even the innocent child whose mother is torn apart earlier in the book, is murdered by god and used for parts, to build a new population that I assume will be more passive and docile. It just rubs me the wrong way. It sounds to me like the author feels we cannot come to solutions on our own, that we need some higher power to solve our problems. And really, what was solved? Everyone is killed and recycled. One could say that their souls were saved, but what about Phil? Why was he left to die? Were his crimes any greater than that of the creator? I think not.

I was so entertained by this book that I've bought additional copies for friends. Saunders, in a small book, manages to capture the core frailties of our species in the bodies of animated junk. A must read for anyone willing to put their rigid outlook on life on standby while they trip along with Phil as he brings order to his world. And when you finish Phil, take another romp with Civil War Land..

The humor in this story does a good job of showing the absurdity of the rest of the story. The characters are almost caricatures of the groups they represent: The media shout nonsensical headlines and talk "out of the mouth near his rear." The media depiction is one of the best caricatures in the book. As a journalism major, I couldn't help but laugh at headlines like, "Moon, stars continue to be located in sky!" "Air continues to float around, being breathed by many!" and "Sky remains dark as night proceeds!" "Good one," remarks one of the journalists about the latter. "I felt that it was an important issue," explains the journalist.
Despite the fact that these creatures aren't human, the author does a good job of helping us identify with them. Although we might not identify with Freda's actual situation of being mistaken for a Christmas tree and being decorated with lights and balls, we do understand the idea Freda has about wanting a better life for her child.
I also liked the Inner Hornerites. Their culture seemed to be a lot more intricate than the Outer Hornerites. We hear about their wedding ceremony, which is conducted by "standing even more closely together than usual and singing sentimental songs about the enviable compactness of their country," and about how they whisper complex math proofs to each other all day. They seem to have more to offer the world than the Outer Hornerites.

i love george saunders books. i'll buy anything with his name on it. this is a wonderfully enjoyable little sci-fi fairy tale; similar in message, but much better (more enjoyable) than george orwell's dull "animal farm." I hope this author writes a hundred books.
Missed the mark.......2006-12-15
I'm a big George Saunders fan, but this one doesn't have the magic. The idea is stretched very thin, and the writing is straight-forward, lacking the sparkle his other books clearly have. However, I can say that it's timely, and reflects the dull fear-mongering of the post-9/11 era in the U.S.A. quite precisely.

Its Christmas in Posadas County. Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is settling down to a quiet evening with her family, until her doctor husband gets a call. Its from the retired chief- of-police Eduardo Martinez; hes at a nearby motel, having pains. Doctor Guzman responds, and then Estelle gets a call herself. Estelle and ex-Sheriff Bill Gastner, who was visiting the Guzman home at the time, arrive at the motel parking lot to find its turned into the scene of a crime. It appears that Eduardo had an exchange with two men and then collapsed, the men taking off in his car. An out-of-town couple, the woman on the verge of giving birth, were the only ones to witness the encounter, but something seems off in their story. Havill triumphs once again, demonstrating his incredible talent for bringing out the characters and setting of this New Mexico community.

STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS is a fine addition to Havill's excellent Posadas County series. While it certainly can be enjoyed on its own, readers who seek out the other novels will be amply rewarded, especially if they read them in order of publication. The richness of character and setting builds throughout the series. I eagerly await more from this author.

I have read each and every one of Steven Havill's books in the Posadas County series, and will read every one he publishes in the future. They are very comforting, with stories that not only surround a mystery or two, but also the lives of the continuing characters. I've gotten to know these people. They are like old friends, and I love reading about them. Steven Havill is one of the most under-recognized authors I know of, a secret for those who love good books and seek them out. Thanks to Amazon.com, I will never miss out on any of Havill's work.
fabulous police procedural .......2006-03-30
On Christmas Eve in Posadas, New Mexico, Chief of Police Eduardo Martinez suffers a heart attack while confronting car thieves in a motel parking lot; the stories from the two witnesses seem off kilter. The next morning Sheriff Robert Torrez still in recovery from on the job injuries suffers from what appears to be a pulmonary embolism. That afternoon the fiancé of one of his deputies is murdered. Finally that evening someone viciously assaults former sheriff Bill Gastner who is brutally attacked that night.
Under-sheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is left in charge to learn who brutally attacked her mentor Gastner, killed the fiancée, and to capture the car thieves. At the same time she feels overwhelmed and her spouse feels the same way as a doctor at the hospital with an abundance of law enforcement officials filling the beds albeit Robert's is in Albuquerque.
In her latest police procedural Estelle feels overwhelmed with the recent medical track record of law enforcement as she and her shrinking staff struggle with a difficult caseload including murder, car jacking, and keeping score of how everyone is doing. She also has some issues at home, but that quickly takes a back seat to police matters. STATUE OF LIMITATIONS is a fabulous police thriller that fans of the series will immensely enjoy and newcomers will seek Steven F. Havill's résumé.

An important book not only for the person with hydrocephalus, but for family and close friends as well. If you're looking for a book that explains hydrocephalus, shunts, shunt complications, symptoms, and everything in between in layman's terms, you've found it. There are so many things that is known about and that people need to know about hydrocephalus and shunts that it's not practicable for neuros and nurses to tell you about it all. So here's a better alternative: a book that has reliable information which you can read and reread as often as you need. It provides you with the knowledge you need to ask neuros the right questions and also to understand their answers. As a parent of a child who had a shunt placed in infancy (he hasn't needed revisions so far), I can't recommend this book highly enough.
What I wasn't told.......2005-10-18
I found this book to be very informative. I now understand much better with what I am dealing. I was diagnosised in November 1997 with hydrocephalus and had my first shunt operation two days after diagnosis. My neurosurgeon to my memory (I was so ill I was hoping someone would just cut my head off) did not tell me about what I could expect or not expect after the surgery or the possibility of needing a revision which I did have one and a half years later. I would highly recommend this book to anyone or the parent of any child diagnosed with hydrocephalus. However, I would like to see more infomation on adult onset hydrocephalus.

I bought this book when I was 18 weeks pregnant with my son who I was informed would have Hydrocephalus. I knew absolutely nothing of the condition, and this book really explained to me the condition and treatments.
The only problem I had with the book is that it doens't give a whole lot of information. It seems to touch on a lot of subjects, but doesn't really go into great detail on each subject.
I would buy this book as somewhere to start. It really was a great source of information, but if you are serious about learning about Hydrocephalus in detail then I would suggest buying this only as a supplement.
By the way, my son is now two and is doing well. He has a VP shunt with a magnetic valve, he has needed 12 revisions, but all non-surgical because of this wonderful Strata Valve.
After Fifty Years I Have Some Answers!.......2003-03-02
I was born with hydrocephalus which arrested itself without any shunts when I was a small child. However, I have been dealing with poor vision, misaligned eyes, poor coordination, and an unusual gait for my entire life. I thought I had a great deal of understanding about my condition but this book has been a godsend! Questions I have had all my life have been answered and just reading about my condition has given me a peace of mind I have not had up to this point. Chuck and Kellie are to be commended for the service they have given all of us in writing this book. Please read it even if you know of no one with the conditon. You will learn a great deal.

INVALUABLE.......2001-07-28
I started collecting Bauer Ringwear by accident with a totally random visit to a wonderful shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles called Buddy's Art Pottery. Whenever I visited Hollywood, I knew that Buddy would help me choose that single, special, almost-affordable piece of Ringwear and spend lots of his time sharing his knowledge, as if I were a major purchaser. Buddy has, sadly, passed away and his shop is a thing of the past. Living in New York as I do, Bauer is not a common collectible. In fact, most antique dealers do not even know the name and try to steer me to their collection of Fiestaware.
I am today a more informed buyer and that is mainly due to the writings of Jack Chipman. This Encyclopedia, specifically, has so many gorgeous photographs and such a thorough history of Bauer and its place in California pottery that I feel it is invaluable.
It is obviously impossible for any writer/collector to price correctly since there are publishing deadlines that must be met and prices, as we all know, change on a daily basis from place to place. But Chipman's price guide is a great "jumping off place." As I cruise Ebay looking for a Bauer bargain, I often think of Buddy and I always consult Chipman. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

We collectors all need to realize that price guides are just that, GUIDES! No one is ever totally happy with the values in books; either too high or too low, kinda just depends on if you are selling or buying. I feel that the prices are on the low side in Jack's book, but I would prefer that over him quoting the higher California area pricing; keep it real for the rest of us across the country. Even if you disregard the value guide aspect, this book is the most complete,informative book you can find if you like Bauer. The color photos are superb and the history is the best info I have found in print. Thank you Jack for putting up with the critics; just remember there are more fans that appreciate the work you have done for us.
Great for indentification, but for pricing...., I wish!.......2000-05-08
I really enjoyed the great photography and certainly the history of Bauer Pottery , however, from my buying view, the prices quoted and taking in all of the considerations Mr. Chipman states, the quotes are way out of line. I live in the SF Bay Area, and the prices for mint and excellant are much much higher. For the beginning collector this indeed casts a shadow of credibility on the seller. Also, if Mrs.Smith, whose Grandmother left a cabinet full or basement boxes filled with Bauer..An explotive opportunistic situation for the dealer. The potential dealer who knows what he or she has happened upon and essentially gives book price.. Needless to say, when Mrs. Smith sees her dishes displayed the following week at a in that same dealer's store, now for a Prince's ransom, is shocked... I think the book was certainly on the side of professional sellers. Not the side of the owner. And the dealer seldom passes his windfall onto the "new" buyer. Buy low..sell high.Where have I heard this before ?

This is a good comprehensive book for beginners and covers most things of importance, but it has a few defects. The reference photos from which the drawings are done are too small, making it difficult to see what the author is talking about. The author leaves his sighting lines on his drawings, which is like leaving up the scaffolding after painting a house--it looks unsightly. He drones on for too long about values. Toward the end of the book, he runs out of things to say, and the book becomes a gallery to show off the author's drawings.

As an art teacher, I know that anyone who wants to draw can--it is simply a matter of interest and opportunity. So many parents I talk to did not have that opportunity as children. Even they did, too many were discouraged by well-meaning teachers, family or friends who convinced them they were not "talented." I do not want this to happen to yet another generation of children.
My intention in writing this book is to encourage children of all ages (and adults) to explore their natural drawing ability. Unlike other drawing books that provide instruction on how to draw a specific way or draw a specific thing, my book begins at the point when a pencil is placed on paper and the first mark is made. Students see immediate success through a series of progressive exercises that are fun and easily accomplished. Each lesson provides a verbal explanation of the concept, followed by visual illustrations and finally, a hands-on exercise. Because we must learn to "see" before we can draw well, the emphasis in the beginning of the workbook is on improving eye/hand coordination. Subsequent exercises progress through capturing movement and space, light and shadow, depth and distance, and adding color. The final section focuses on putting all the lessons together to create a pleasing composition.

I have been teaching art in schools and privately for over 5 years. I had understood most of the principles in this book, however, if I would have had them all organized like they are in this book, I could have saved ALOT of time and energy!!! I found this book a MUST for everyone who not only teaches art, but who draws period. A great accomplishment!
