Devereux (1929) The bungalow, in all its various forms, has existed since the early seventeenth century--from its origin as a Bengalese hut, or "banggolo," made of mud, cow dung, thatch, and bamboo, to later developments as a one-story, square structure surrounded by a collonaded veranda, and the subtle permutations exhibited in designs such as the Frank Lloyd Wright style "prairie House." Originally created as a peasant dwelling in rural India, and later an accommodation for European travellers and expansive permanent residences for the colonial ruling class who served there, the bungalow has become one of the most frequently adopted house forms throughout the world and the most popular home style in the United States. Architects the world over have extolled the bungalow's merits in their interpretations of its modest style and economy, while romantic notions of this humble abode have been conveyed through poetry and song by both temporary sojourners and permanent residents, rejoicing in its simplistic luxury. It is, in fact, the only dwelling which, in both name and form, exists on every continent (the word bungalow has entered eighteen languages). The first work of its kind, this richly illustrated volume takes readers on an engaging tour of the history of the bungalow, explaining the evolution of this architectural wonder, from its inception as a practical dwelling place to its present day incarnation as a suburban home looked upon with affection and pride. Here, Anthony D. King explores the historical forces, which in producing the bungalow, also shaped the modern world: colonialism and industrialization, capitalism and socialism, urbanization and suburbanization. He argues that a global culture of architectural style can be identified with the bungalow, one which accords with the development of our international, capitalistic, and urban culture, and that the bungalow "was one of, if not the first, common house types of this culture." Every type of bungalow is discussed, including the American Craftsman and Arts and Crafts cottage styles, the Spanish Colonial and California bungalows that became the basis for suburban sprawl throughout Los Angeles, and the Japanese teahouse style that dominates the Florida landscape. Offering the definitive history of America's most popular house form, this fascinating work provides an engaging look at the charming structure of the bungalow. Thorough and comprehensive.......2000-05-18

This is a ver thorough and comprehensive work. It traces the evolution of the bungalow back to the 1600's in India and shows how the bungalow evolved into the twetieth century house style that Americans have come to know and love. While the text is exhaustive, the photos are old reprints and in a few cases are hazy. The book adresses the evolution of this building type not so much from an architectural stancem but more from a sociological view point. This is a scholarly work that is intened for the serious student of vernacular architecture. It is not a 'stlye book' nor is it a source for decorating.

Limited scope.......2007-05-30

LP, like all guidebooks, varies in quality depending on the author. While this guide on Syria/Lebanon isn't the worst, it could be much better.

The main problem is that it is extremely limited in its scope. Both Syria and Lebanon, but Syria in particular, have literaly hundreds of sites to see, but you wouldn't know it with this LP. It only gives you the most popular sites and then a few it claims are "off-the-beaten-track" but really aren't. It misses some of Syria's best out of the way castles and ruins. Great stuff that if you only relied on LP, which promotes teh beaten backpacker track, you would never find.

I would give it a 1-star, but it is saved by the hotel recommendations. Syria is a place where knowing what hotels to hit up can be hard, and LP does a good job giving you affordable ones that are tourist-tested.

Still, though, the guide lacks any real historical or cultural insight and really only gives the illusion of leading you down the "road-less traveled."

I lived in Syria for a year and tried to take in as much as possible and thus found myself sifting through numerous guides. The one I found to be the best was Footprints, but they haven't published an updated version since 2001. The new Bradt is quite promising, but if you really want to know what Syria has to offer, you need "Monuments of Syria" by Ross Burns. It doesn't have many glossy pictures, but it does have every single cultural and archaeological site worth seeing in this great country.

Great guide!.......2006-09-07

I used this guide for travels in Lebanon this past summer, fortunately, before the war. I explored Beirut and Tripoli, and this book provided excellent information on both cities. I found everything from hotel descriptions to guides on inter-country travel via bus and taxi to be accurate and helpful. Whatever information you could require for travelling through Lebanon and Syria is found here. Overall, a solid and reliable guide to an amazing region.

"As you wish".......2000-12-29

"As you wish" is the response to most questions in Syria, making the LP Guide very necessary. It contains excellent information on rarer sites and ruins along with very good historical information about them.

The hotel information was very helpful since good lodging in Syria can be hard to find. The information on the souks is very good for those that like to shop. Finally in the same vain, their food section was very helpful for different budgets.

The LP Guide is more detailed than the new Neos Guide published by Michelin, but unfortunately the maps are awkward to read in the LP guide and the detail maps to some of the less well traveled sites are not very reliable and the directions are poor. (I searched for a specifically described site near Aleppo for over an hour.) Overall though, it contains very detailed information, which is definately necessary in Syria since one is unable to find such information locally without considerable effort. I would recommend the Neos Guide for an overview and quality maps, and the LP guide for more detailed information. Both guides are necessary for a meaningful and hassle free trip.

Best book for all your travel needs (in Syria, of course!).......2000-06-01

I've just arriving from a travel to Syria. I've travelled a lot and I've ever used LP guides. This is one of the best. During my travel in Syria sometimes I had asked to myself: where can I find this, that, those...all the answers, the most weird too, are in this book. During my visit to the dead towns (near Aleppo)the guide wared me about wild dogs. So, you can't believe it, I'll find the dog. The guide don't say how can I save my pour legs...but this was a my problem not of the book. Is like to have a friend with you who knows everything about this country

The Choctaw Code is one of my all time favorites and was an especially liked read aloud chapter book for my fifth grade students in Atoka, Oklahoma. Readers relate to the growing beautiful friendship between Jim and the boy and the values being taught by example of the Choctaw people's way of dealing with justice and life. The story paints a picture of unselfish communication between two people of two very different cultures. I am pleased that it is back in print.

If you want to use their design plans you will have to order them from the book. I wish this point wouldv'e been mentioned but as I know a little about plants I like it's more about the design and layout that i was interested in the most. They have nice designs although after about 20 os so, they tend to look the same. They also feature plans for decks, play house/sets, and more. ...
