Book Description
The merry atmosphere in Pickax is dampened by the death of an out-of-town actor and the theft of a rare book. Qwill finds himself distracted from the events by his finicky pal Koko, who's been acting more fishy than feline. Has Koko gone bananas, or is he trying to let the cat out of the bag to solve the dual mysteries?
Download Description
"James Qwilleran and his famous felines, Koko and Yum Yum, are back for another mystery-solving stint in the beloved bestselling Cat Who . . . series. The good people of Pickax are agog with anticipation: Not only is the new bookstore, The Pirate's Chest, about to open, but the Theatre Club is set to perform Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. The play does not continue past opening night, however, for a member of the cast is killed in a car accident . . . or was it an accident? Koko seems to suspect otherwise, and Qwill and his clever cats have their work cut out for them."

The Cat Who Should Retire.......2007-09-08
Hardcore mystery fans may find it a bit of a stretch, but if your taste runs to expertly written and very light fiction, you can't do better than Lillian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who..." series. Her detective, reporter James Qwilleran, investigates crimes with the aid of his Siamese cats--and the solutions to the crime inevitably rest more upon intution than actual deduction. The premise sounds farfetched, but Braun's work is usually less fanciful than you might expect, and she presents her eccentric characters and stories with great charm.
Unfortunately, the series has been in marked decline for some time now, and THE CAT WHO WENT BANANAS is a case in point. On the surface, the plot has possibilities: Qwilleran's interest in a local theatre group's production of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST opens a path to death that may or may not be accidental. Unfortunately, the plot goes nowhere and, although the conclusion certainly points to a specific person as a killer, there is no actual resolution per se. To make matters worse, the prose lacks Braun's light, bemused touch. While I think it possible that the book has been written from Braun's basic ideas, I think it very unlikely that Braun herself wrote it. It reeks of "ghosts."
This is a tremendous pity, a disservice to both Braun and the reader. Newcomers to the series should look to earlier works, such as THE CAT WHO CAME TO BREAKFAST or THE CAT WHO MOVED A MOUNTAIN--but the later titles in the series should be avoided like the plauge.

The Cat Who Earned Two Stars.......2007-08-12
The Cat Who Went Bananas, by Lilian Jackson Braun, is a rather slight novel that sadly seems to have been written for the sole purpose of producing a book, rather than telling a story. The paperthin plot does not inpsire much interest. I had a difficult time determining what the book was about and whether or not there was any mystery involved. I remembered somebody mentioning a person had died, and then there was a missing book, but I could not for the life of me remember why. This was my fourth book in the series, after starting with the first three. I think I had better continue with the series in order as the quality comparison between the first three and this one decreased drastically.
Two stars.
The cat went bananas? Not in my copy of the book he didn't.......2007-07-19
Very disappointing actually. I've read lots of 'The Cat Who ...' books and this one was quite unlike any of the others. The plot elements did not tie together and people, who seemed mysterious and interesting, disappeared or died. And the banana peel, which could clearly have been used to great comic effect, made a single very brief appearance and was barely mentioned again.
Very poor. I gave it 3 out of 5 because it reads well *but* and this is a big butt ;-) there is no closure to any of the mysteries introduced.
If Heloise or Emily Post tried to write a mystery, this would be it! .......2007-07-09
This book was ungodly boring. Nothing happened. Certianly nothing that warrented 223 pages to discuss. I found the tone of the novel to be similar to reading an Emily Post or Heloise column in the newspaper. Stuffy, old-fashioned, pompus, self-important and rediculous. However, I do believe that this book could be turned into an episode of a not so funny sitcom, as it seemed to have all the plot of an episode of Seinfeld without the humor. If you could imagine Northern Exposure without such an intresting plot, this would fit "The cat who..." sitcom exactly. Unfortunatly, this will be my first and last of "The Cat who" series as I cannot bear to suffer through another page of her useless, plotless, pointless drivel.
The Cat Who Went Bananas.......2007-04-14
This is the first one of the "Cat Who..." books that I have read. I thought this book was going to get really good but it never did. I thought it was kind of boring because it really didn't have a point. It just rambled on and on. This book was only a little interesting when Quill was interviewing people for things to put in the book he is writing. This book was mostly boring though again becase it had no point, it would go to one subject and then not carry on with that and go to something completely different. Overall this book was just okay.

Book Description
At the end of The Day of the Triffids, the hero, Bill Masen, his wife, and four-year-old son leave the British mainland to join a new colony on the Isle of Wight. The Night of the Triffids takes up the story 25 years later. David Masen, the now grown-up son of Bill, is a pilot, still searching for a method of destroying the implacable triffid plant as it continues its worldwide march, seemingly intent on wiping out humankind. David eventually manages to reach New York, where a very different sort of colony has been set up, a colony whose members seem to be immune to the triffid string and where David comes face to face with an old enemy from his father's past.
Customer Reviews:
"Triffids" deserves a sequel but this ain't it........2007-05-17
This book starts a generation or so after "The Day of the Triffids" ends, with the world again being plunged into darkness, this time because the earth has passed through a cloud of cosmic dust, or something. The cloud conveniently doesn't cut off the heat as well, so we don't just freeze to death. The triffids, of course, take advantage of the situation, and have to be survived all over again.
The hero, son of the original hero, Bill Masen, investigates the event and finds himself taken to America, where another community is holding out on Manhattan Island (why there, for Pete's sake? It would seem even less promising than London, and far less so than America's own Southwest or Great Plains states). In New York (small world isn't it?), he runs into his father's old enemy, Torrance, who was setting up feudal baronies in the last chapter of the original novel, and has now tried his luck across the pond. Torrance hasn't changed much. While the status of the blind is less of an issue now, it seems that Blacks are kept pretty much in their 1950s place. The sequel then runs off into various adventures with new varieties of triffid, and rival groups of human, which I can only hazily recall, and probably won't bother going back to.
In short, a thorough disappointment, and for me at least an infuriating one. I would have loved a decent sequel to Wyndham's book, which is up there with "Earth Abides" as one of my favourite disaster novels, but which left so much more to be told. But this doesn't even come close.
Incidentally, another reviewer asked when "The Day of the Triffids" was supposed to have taken place. Fortunately, we were told that Masen removed his bandages on Wednesday 8th May, which narrows it down a bit. My perpetual calendar shows the following years, subsequent to the book's publication in 1951, when such a date existed - 1957, 1963, 1968, 1974, 1985, 1991, 1996, 2002. Since it's clearly set in the present, or at least very near future, we can probably forget the last four, and a reference in "Night" to the Berlin Wall eliminates 1957. My bet would be 1963, with 1968 and 1974 as possible but less likely. But others may have their own opinion.
My 100-word book review.......2007-03-21
Set a few decades after the events of John Wyndham's famous novel, Night of the Triffids is a straightforward adventure story, with travel, warfare and a little romance thrown in. Not really in the same league as the original, it nevertheless has some imaginative touches, including a few brand new varieties of triffid. Whereas Day of the Triffids was an epic tale about the fall of civilisation, Night of the Triffids is mostly about warring human factions in a depopulated and dangerous new world. Taken on its own merits, this is a solidly written story, which I found quite entertaining.
A qualified success.......2006-08-28
A must-read item for Wyndham fans, and given the challenge that Simon Clark took on, a qualified success.
Reading Pleasure.......2006-08-20
Having read DOTT and NOTT in the space of one month and watching the movie version of the former twixt the readings I can honestly say I'd like more.
Of course Clark isn't Wyndham but for that matter (in the Triffid universe) David Masen isn't his father either. So that makes it easy to read the different stylings of the 2 authors. I enjoyed both and would give DOTT 5 stars to NOTT's 4 stars (the movie might get 3 for effort mainly, and like others I would love to see a new flick based on DOTT).
I actually appreciated the lack of expletives and find it ridiculous that someone actually wanted more for "realism". Realism? Both works were supposed to be historical journals not word-for-word accounts. Few historians bother with including every expletive they've heard and I find it totally believable that these accounts didn't either.
The complaint by some that evolution doesn't work as portrayed is hilarious since evolution doesn't work at all. Besides that, it is science-fiction. What part of fiction didn't they understand?
So much could be done with Triffids by authors using different survivors (even those who might not know any of the people in these 2 books). Settings in Hawaii, Austrailia, Japan, California, ad naseum would be welcomed by me.
A bit of a disappointment.......2004-09-22
As someone who has read most of John Wyndham's (the author of the original "Day of ...") books, I hoped to find something similar in this book. I did. The writing style of it looks the same as the original, but several things are different/wrong: All of Wyndham's books were short, clear and concise. This one is much too long and verbose. Each of Wyndham's books showed how human society is fragile by changing some "little" thing and then telling what the catastrophic consequences would be. This allways gave food for thought. This one tries a little with the darkness and the "new" triffids, but it fails IMHO to do it in a believable way. Wyndhams books were believable even though they introduced strange things like walking plants. The reason behind the darkness (the night) in "Night of ..." seems silly and out of place. And then there are the "new" triffids. In the end you start asking yourself when there'll be triffids driving cars, or flying aeroplanes.
The book started well, feeling like a new Wyndham book, but in the end, after too many pages, I was left with an empty hollow impression and the feeling of having wasted my time. This was the first and last book I'll read by Simon Clark.

In a blizzard of conflicting nutritional claims and information, here is a book that gets down to basics, debunks many myths, and gives the reader a useful and comprehensive look at food, nutrition, and health. Based on sound science and the research of more than 300 nutritional experts worldwide, it is well organized and indexed, and will be a refreshingly clear reference for anyone who wants to know about nutrition and health (know anyone who doesn't?). One of the best books I've seen on the subject.

BEST BUY EVER.......2006-09-11
I boutht this book in 1997 and still use it and have it handy all the time! i'm always trying to keep up my healthy habits and maintain a balanced diet. this book is a must have! it is written wisely and very easy to understand. it is written in alphabetical order and you can look up almost every sickness, foods, vitamins and minerals, what is good for what, what are the drawbacks and where to find them. for sickness what it is, what should you eat, what to cut down, what to avoid. etc. if you are a person like me and like to know what you eat, you must own this book! by the way i'm ordering today a 2004 copy for my mother in law who has recovered from breast cancer and is so much into eating healthy.
EXCELLENT TOOL FOR RAISING HEALTHY KIDS.......2006-07-05
I HAVE OWNED THIS BOOK FOR OVER 5 YRS NOW. I USE IT REGULARLY TO LOOK OP NUTRITIONAL PROPERTIES FOR THINGS THAT I EAT. I AM AN RN WITH HEALTHY EATING HABITS AND I JUST LIKE TO KNOW HOW DIFFERENT FOODS PROMOTE HEATH OR WHAT COULD BE HARMFULL FOR ME. I ALSO USE IT TO TEACH MY KIDS WHAT THEY ARE CONSUMING. THEY ARE NOW MORE WILLING TO TRY ASPARGUS AFTER THE PROPERTIES ARE EXPLAINED TO THEM. I LET MY FRIEND WHO SURVIVED BREAST CANCER BORROW IT TO MODIFY HER EATING HABITS. WHAT AN EXCELLENT BOOK. IT STAYS IN MY KITCHEN.
Full of Good Information.......2006-03-13
A reminder that you really are what you eat. Great reference on foods and their nutritional value. Much of this information is now available online. But, if you prefer a hard copy for frequent reference this is a great book.
A Treasure Chest of Nutritional Information.......2005-01-23
This book is so easy to navigate and is literally packed with wonderful and useful information. Food are listed and discussed in alphabetical order.
You will want to fill your diet with the "good" and understand why some foods are "harmful." I like the way that nutrition is discussed pertaining to certain diseases and conditions such as cancer, hair & scalp problems, kidney disease etc.
The book is also a visual treat filled with color photographs and easy to read text & charts.

Martha Stewart's fans look to her to provide a sense of what's possible with unlimited taste and plenty of decorating funds, and certainly no one else does Christmas with such flair. Martha's Christmas feast may seem a bit over the top, with silver-leaved fruit at each place setting, crystal decanters of French dessert wines, and cake stands holding more decorations, but it photographs nicely--and, of course, the food looks great. There's also an easier New Year's Day party suggestion that will appeal to more casual party-givers. Martha's signature is the elegant simplicity of her decorative concepts, and this book's strength is its easy instructions for making wonderful wreaths, tree ornaments, and gift wrappings. The instructions for making aluminum snowflakes may alone be worth the price of the book.
Customer Reviews:
What's with the pastels?.......1999-08-20
I am a Martha Stewart fan, but this book disturbed me with its creepy pastels and white motif that pervaded the book. This sucked the Christmas spirit right out of me. I do yearn for the deep rich colors and and old money feel that were the Martha of yore. Now everything is post-divorce bright minimalist.
A rehash of past magazines.......1998-08-31
If you subscribe to the magazine you will be very disappointed. Most of the projects are articles directly out of the past couple years' Winter issues. If you don't subscribe, you will enjoy the book. It's a scam for true Martha devotees.
Why is the cover so ugly?.......1998-07-28
ALl I have to say about this book is one thing: It's a shame an art-driven publisher like Clarkson Potter would allow an ugly cover like this to bear their logo. Obvious last-minute slap job of magazine scrap pieces. What a waste of money.
I can't imagine the holidays without it!.......1998-03-20
What would Christmas be without Martha Stewart? I can't imagine. This book covers Christmas in every stage from planning a month before to enjoying the big day. Everything is mapped out in accessible detail. The finished products look so "Martha Stewart," yet they are so simple to make, especially the folded paper stars, boxes of Swiss meringue,(which are spectacular) and the felt bags. My book is well worn and I find myself reaching for it almost monthly. The Lime Meringue Tart recipe alone is worth the price of the book!
A Classic Christmas how to,elegant and easy!.......1998-03-15
Martha introduced (or re-introduced) all of us, to the beauty of making it at home. From soup to ornaments, nothing is missed! Martha shows the world how easy things can be, if we just take the time. Hers is a classic simplicity that says "you are home!"
Book Description
During the middle of the 20th century, neon signs turned North America's roadside into a luminous wonderland. The most compelling signs were figural: imaginative, cartoon drawings in light. These unforgettable depictions of exploding bowling pins, crashing cars, baton twirling majorettes, and lassoing cowboys were the fodder for legend and lore. Neon designer Len Davidson has captured the magic with over 350 photos of superb vintage signs. He has drawn on renowned photographers, museums, and private collections, as well as his own Neon Museum of Philadelphia pieces to compile the definitive photo archive. Davidson has also expressed the legend in words. The pages echo with the voices of sign makers and shopkeepers, photographers and preservationists. Architects and sign artisans will find this collection invaluable. It is also an essential volume for anyone who has been captured by the spell of the highway and neon's siren song.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful book.......2007-03-31
This book has a nice variety of vintage signs. It is great to see the original color of the neon since I am restoring an old Pegasus that came off a Mobil gas station.
The author appears knowledgeable and it is difficult to find books on this subject. It is fun to read the short discriptions of the histories of the signs and anecdotes from other collectors.
Anyone who grew up with neon signs would enjoy this book.
Great book for those who appreciate neon.......2004-12-21
I just recieved this book as a gift and I love it. The book is filled with color photos of neon from around the country, and includes a fair amount of info on each sign. I was unaware this book exsisted until i recieved it, but it was a pleasant surprise. This book is a must have for vintage enthusiests, and fans of neon in general.
Incredible Book!!.......2004-07-01
Properly titled VINTAGE NEON (as shown on the cover) this book contains incredible photos and narrative of these beautiful works of art. Fans of "Americana" will especially enjoy this fading slice of American Roadside Life.
Glowing Neon.......2000-01-28
Mr. Davidson's expertise in both the technical and artistic creation of neon is more spectacular than the lights themselves. Although expensive, this book is by far the most authoritative glimpse the craft and its appreciation than any other volume ever written. In the vernacular of the modern generation, it is 'tubular'. Almost every conceivable manner of neon is included; businesses include car showrooms, shoe stores, butcher shops, bakeries, motels, drive-ins (both theatrical and eatery), and in abundance, restaurants. Locations include many havens of neon distribution, such as the author's beloved Philadelphia, Route 66, California, and a much overlooked plethora of vivid glamour, Vancouver British Columbia (Canada). This volume is absolutely enchanting for anyone who has ever spent a night in a lodging illuminated on the exterior by a tint of pink, green, yellow, or blue. Of the 200 books in my personal 'Roadside Library', this is my favorite. Anyone who treasures illumination will consider "VINTAGE NEON" enlightening.
Amazing collection of old signs........1999-10-25
A tribute to the forgotten signmakers of the 1920's through the present. Lots of color pictures contributed by neon sign enthusiasts from around the country. Expensive, but if you like old signs, this book will make you happy.

Page-Turning Midlife Memoir.......2005-11-15
A good and inspiring read. History and biography readers have long been hooked on great first-person adventure stories - autobiographies. At their best, they are authored by personalities who can tell the difference between their statures and their shadows and are undiminished by well-meaning ghostwriters. Raffi's autobiography, The Life of A Children's Troubadour is just such a good read. Breaking with the well-represented male-as-conqueror model, Raffi's compelling story opens with "the departure of my parents from this world within twelve hours of each other, on October 26, 1995." This life-altering event draws us into his tale, built on Armenian Diaspora roots and immigrant childhood through his first career as folk entertainer for children and their families, all leading to his life-inspiring vision and passion for "child honoring." It's been a welcomed gift to my nieces and circle of friends. I can't wait for a sequel to this mid-life tale - how he teams his world view, his music and his environmentally attuned baby beluga graduates with statesmen and religious leaders, like the Dalai Lama.
Get to know your children's idol!.......2002-05-30
If your children are fans of Raffi and you must hear his voice everyday, it's nice to know a little background. An amazing life story and very entertaining reading. Who knew?!?
lots of little-known facts.......2001-12-07
I learned a lot about Raffi's early life and family from this book -- also about the children's music industry. Raffi was and is a pioneer in his field. A fast-moving read and must-have for any children's performer.
Raffi shares his heartfelt beliefs.......2001-02-15
The Life Of A Children's Troubadour is Raffi's autobiography in which he shares the story of his life, from his childhood in Cairo Egypt, to his adjustment to life in Toronto as a youth, to his professional success as a musician throughout North America. Raffi reveals the details of his remarkable career, from modest beginnings as a folksinger in coffee houses to sold-out children's concerts at Carnegie Hall and on Broadway. Raffi shares his heartfelt beliefs, his love and admiration for children, and his dedication to making the world a better place for kids. The Life Of A Children's Troubadour is a "must" for anyone who has enjoyed and appreciated Raffi's very special music and his influence on a generation of children, parents and teachers.
Even Our Heroes Are Human.......2000-04-11
I reall enjoyed discovering who Raffi is. It was nice to see that he is not perfect and to see himself work that.
I would have liked to read more about his life and less about how to raise a child. Towards the end of the book, it got a little "preachy" on how to raise a child. I find it a little difficult to get advice from someone who does not have a child.
I do, however, find it inspiring that someone did so well in a path that he didn't choose for himself. He learned to do the best he could and let himself be guided.
