I was disappointed in the book because I wanted it for a new young figure sakter, and I was anticipating more pictures -- this book is very technical and for older skaters.
Not enough detail, some crucial typos.......2006-10-04
This is a much more visual book than Petkevich's, which has detailed verbal explanations that take a bit of effort to visualize. Unfortunately, some of the pictures in Shulman's book leave large gaps between frames, and it's hard to tell how to get from one position to the next.
There are some editorial or proofing mistakes that really hurt the book. Figure skating spins and jumps are done in one direction (counterclockwise for most, clockwise for some) that the skater chooses early-on in their training. Shulman explains this, and the fact that her directions are for counterclockwise spinners and need to be reversed by clockwise spinners. Unfortunately the picture and directions for the one-footed spin are backwards, and describe a *clockwise* entry and spin when all the other spins are written for counter-clockwise skaters. This will be very confusing for a begining skater who has no coach of their own!
In one or two other places a picture is reversed (mirror image), which again can be very confusing if you're trying to learn on your own and don't know that there's a mistake in the book.
There is a good section on modern off-ice strength training, including periodization.
Overall I'd recommend this book *in conjunction* with Petkevich's book: both have gaps that the other complements. And of course there's no substitute for a real coach!
Excellent book for both parents & skaters.......2006-02-03
I agree with previous reviews. This is an excellent book for both skaters and their parents. It not only provides detail information and graphics about each move and jump on ice, but also give a good advice on how important it is for off ice training and passion of the sport.
Great Book for Skaters.......2003-07-06
This is a great book for any figure skater! It gives you tips on moves and tells you step by step how to do them. It gives instruction on the basics, freestyle moves, spins, jumps, footwork, and pairs skating. It also gives you tips for just starting out. It highlights popular figure skaters for their specific moves (example: Lucinda Rue for her spins, Scott Hamilton for his footwork, ect.). It is a great book for any skater of any level or age.

This is one of the best books about figure skating available. It is an excellent guide for figure skaters who want to improve their skills and a good coaching reference. Many photos and step-by-step instructions provide information for learning turns and footwork, spins, jumps, freestyle moves, basic moves, and pairs. Also included in this book are information on choosing skates, warming up, types of figure skating, fitness and strength, and more. Plus, there is helpful information on choosing music and costumes for programs. This book is a wonderful, helpful reference for all figure skaters and coaches.

I am a Chinese and found the author has translated this book in a very professional way even i myself was amazed by the whole bench of Chiese Classical Books being used as references . This book precisely described the background , culture and state of mind of the people living in the Tang Dynasty .It is a good Chinese detective book , i just cannot stop reading .Hope u will enjoy this book too .
Different detective.......2007-02-24
For the reader that enjoys detective books this is a must- especially if he/she prefers an historical context. Robert van Gulik, a diplomat familiar with oriental culture writes with talent and methodically- for a good detective story to be developed it is required. The only critisism that one might say is that there are some anchronisms as faras the chinese culture but they do not affect the stories. The Judge is a very intersting person that the reader sympathises with. Enjoy it.
Dee Goong An.......2005-12-17
This book and the fiction that Mr. Van Gulik wrote after 1945 are definitly not your run of the mill detective stories. The author, trained and serving as a diplomat in the orient, has a profound knowledge of Tang Dynasty China, its cutoms and traditions. My wife and I began reading them almost thirty years ago, a still "binge" every five years or so on the series.
Van Gulik used Dee Goong An as, I supect, a vehicle for his diplomatic traing and deeper understanding of the Chinese. The man writes in a scholarly, traditional, and slightly pedantic style that in no way obscures the charm of his subject. As a contempory review observed all of the "frail beauty and cruelty of the Tang's" are preserved. You must understand this, because Van Gulik attempts to recreate the genre accuratly. This is notable due to the idosyncrasies of our western detective mystery style, and the vast differences with their asian peers.
Fair to note that Mr. Van Gulik was a noted sinophile, and lived and died there. The preface and appendices are worth re-reading and the stage is then set for the rst of the series. Try to read this one (Dee Goong An) first! These are as follows:

As with any serial literary undertaking not all of these books are of the same quality as Dee Goong An. Yet they are all worth reading again and again.
Interesting change of pace.......2004-12-23
An actual translation of a Chinese detective novel, this is good fun for mystery buffs, and especially for anyone familiar with van Gulik's Judge Dee series.
The Judge, with his familiar retinue, faces three puzzling mysteries. Some elements of this are reworked in later Dee novels: the poisoned-bride story inspired part of THE CHINESE GOLD MURDERS and the killer widow story was lifted and slightly altered for THE CHINESE NAIL MURDERS.
Nevertheless, this is a breath of fresh air for those who want something different. Readers curious about Chinese culture will appreciate the text and the notes, and will enjoy a good, readable translation.
To start on the fictional Judge Dee novels, start with THE CHINESE GOLD MURDERS.
Different type of mystery novel.......2003-05-13
This is a reprint of a detective novel written in the 18th century that is set in 7th century China. Written by someone well versed in Chinese law, it outs three of Judge Dee's most famous cases together into one novel. Judge Dee was a district Magistrate, a combination prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner (if necessary). Magistrates had pretty wide authority to interrogate anyone, and use any method to get a confession, including beatings and torture. But, if a Magistrate executed someone who was later found to be innocent (for instance), the Magistrate was executed.
In the first case, a pair of silk merchants spend the night at a hostel in a certain town. The next morning, just outside of town, one of them is found dead. The local Warden (the town policeman) immediately accuses the hostel owner of killing, then robbing, the merchant, something the hostel owner vigorously denies. The second case involves a young bride who is poisoned on her wedding night. In the third case, a young widow and her mother live alone. The widow's husband died a year previously under less than clear circumstances. Not only does the young widow lock herself in her room for half a day every day, she also gets very angry and belligerent toward her mother whenever any men come around; not just potential suitors, but any men. As Judge Dee investigates, and interroagtes both women, the circumstances of the husband's death get more and more mysterious.
Chinese detective novels are very different than their western counterparts. The culprit is introduced in the beginning of the story, and the interest is in seeing how the crime is solved. They tend to get very detailed, especially concerning the method of torture and execution, so a length of several hundred pages is common. This novel is one of the shorter ones that are available.
For mystery lovers who want to read a very different type of novel, this is worth checking out. Agatha Christie has little to fear from Chinese detective novels regarding competition, but it is still worth the reader's time.

A must-have........2007-09-02
If you are into the Star Wars roleplaying game and prefer the old WEG D6 system to the overly-comlicated d20 system published by Wizards of the Coast, then do not hesitate to buy this book.
Basically, it's a book that compiles all of the Jedi rules (then adds many more) into one tome. If you have any interest in playing a Jedi character or running a Jedi-centric campaign, you really do need this book.
If you check out my other reviews, I don't just hand out 5 stars that easily; this book truly does deserve it!
One of the "Must Have" SWRPG Sourcebooks..........1999-07-05
Although it only contains RPG info on "Tales of the Jedi" and the "Freedon Nadd Uprising", and even if you didn't Dark Horse comic series this is a great book of archiac weaponry and history that can spice up any campaign. Includes some new Forcepowers, 7 character templates, and a solo adventure.

Gartner has written a must-read book for those of us in recovery. I've read several books on the subject, and "Beyond Betrayal" almost seems to be written directly about MY life. I learned so much about myself by reading and journaling along with this wonderfully helpful book. It has been extremely helpful to my wife as well...she understands so much about me now. An instant classic -- thank you for this wonderful book!.......2007-04-21
We just don't have to feel so alone any more. Dr. Gartner's amazing earlier book, Betrayed as Boys, was written for professionals but he used language that many laymen (including me) can find moving and useful. In Beyond Betrayal, he writes directly to men like us as well as to our partners, spouses, and loved ones. Beyond Betrayal speaks so directly to my own experience as a man trying to heal from boyhood abuse that I almost felt he knew me and wrote it specifically for me. There is a stunning description of early betrayal and how it leads to severe problems with trust in relationships later on. He then leads you through how society cheats you by making you believe that men can't be victims. The result of this is that we often believe that our abuse was our own fault -- leading to shame, silence, and guilt. This section was especially startling and remarkable. He covers all the bases, including abuse by priests and other clergy, abuse by women that we are told is "sexual initiation," and so many other facets of boyhood sexual abuse!
But he dioesn't stop there. Dr Gartner also tells us how to find our way. I not only felt understood, but also felt I got specific tools to move me along a path of healing. The section on how to find a therapist (even if you live in an isolated area not likely to have specialists in boyhood abuse) will be a godsend to many men. So is his section on things we can do for ourselves in addition to therapy. And our partners and loved ones -- who are often really left out in the cold in books like this -- will also find relief, comfort, and specific ways to help themselves, us, and our relationships as we journey together.

Life Changing.......2006-12-09
This book was the first one I read when I finally chose to accept my abuse. It is sensitive, compassionate, and full of positivity. Some of the stories from other surviviors will force you to recall similarities in your life, but in the end, it will help you to appreciate that you're not alone and you will become a Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse and no longer a Victim. Mr. Gartner will give you the tools that you need to move forward and live a life that you always knew you could live. It will not happen over night or over a month or even a year, but it will happen!!

In the early months of therapy my therapist suggested this book. She had listened to me when I said that the other books seemed to be about victims, but not 'of' victims; she said this book was geared more from the victims' perspective. Reading it was one of the defining moments in my healing; this was a turning point. I read about people just like me; I read about how they felt and how they expressed it to Dr Gartner; I read about them not wanting to say the truth because they feared reprisal or ridicule; I read about things I thought only I felt, suffered, endured and held inside. I read reality and it hit home, it hit home hard and true and I let go of something. I let go of the illusion that I was the only one in the whole world that felt like that. I let go - so simple yet so profound, and in letting go I opened a small window to let my therapist see into my world. If you doubt anyone ever enduring the same as you, read this book. Skim it if you will; jump about through the paragraphs; read one page a day if it hurts but, please, read it. Read the real people. Know, in you heart, that you are truly not alone. You have to do that for 'you' now.

Addictive, Delicious Vegetarian Food to impress friends.......2004-11-04
I 1st borrowed this from the Library and have tried to make at least one recipe from books I borrow. I am a newbe to Vegetarian food and found this book so addictive. After making some of the recipes from this book I am totally convinced that a great vegetarian meal can be 10x tastier and better for you than a meat one. I loved this book so much that I ended up buying it as I'm now constantly using it. Why is this the best vegetarian book I have ever read;
1. Usability, it is extremely easy to understand the recipes
2. The ingredients are common and easy to make and master
3. They taste delicious
4. They look fantastic when you serve
5. Best photography I've seen in a cookbook
6. Truly will WOW all your vegetarian and non vegetarian friends

Good book -- too short!.......2004-10-18
I received this cookbook as a gift, and at first thought, "I really don't need another cookbook!" My cookbook shelves were already overflowing, but after looking through this book, I decided I'd definitely find a place for it.
As with most vegetarian cookbooks, this one starts out with the basics about grains, protein sources, etc., with the added twist of discussing the actual nutrients we all need in our diets (iron, b vitamins, etc. and what they're good for). This section is only two pages, though, but there is general advice on what foods supply which nutrients. There are beautiful photos throughout this section, as well as accompanying each recipe in the book.
The next few pages cover the basic vegetarian pantry (with nothing more obscure than kosher salt and truffle oil) and basic recipes like veggie stock and basic tomato sauce. There's also a page on kitchen equipment.
The actual recipes are roughly grouped by meal type. Recipe chapters are: Breakfast; Soups & Salads; Appetizers & Snacks; Dips, Salsa, & Sauces; Entrees; Vegetables on the Side; Vegetarian Grills; Party Food; and Sweet Things. Some of the recipes are pretty basic (pancakes, anyone?), but in those cases there are usually variations suggested (like cottage cheese pancakes). More involved recipes have two-page "how-to" instructions with nice pictures and clear step-by-step directions. This approach makes recipes like Japanese Omelets (cut to look like sushi!) and (polenta-stuffed) Piedmontese Peppers incredibly approachable even for the faint of heart.
I was most surprised, though, that I found several new recipes to try. With my full shelf of vegetarian cookbooks, I expected to flip through this one and put it away forever. Not so -- from the Thyme and Mushroom Gravy (for a vegetarain Bangers and Mash!) to the aforementioned Peppers, there are several inspiring ideas in this book.
Most biggest complaint is that the book is much too short, especially for the price (so only four stars). Each section only has a handful of recipes, just enough to whet the appetite. but I definitely hope to see more from this author in future.
Gormet Veggieness=happie hippie.......2002-07-02
I just got this book yesterday, which happened to be my parents' 33rd anniversary, and so I made them a gormet meal, which looked gorgeous, tasted good, and was veggie. I made the mushroom and chickpea salad (mmmmmmmmm) and the rasberry roulade, which was rather complicated, but had photos of each step. it was sweet and pretty. :-D the only drawbacks of this book come from its being a gormet cookbook. the recipies take a while to make (about 3 hours for those two dishes) and some ingredients are really hard to find (such as rosewater). but her instructions are excellent, and the food tastes wonderful. For simpler and faster vegitarian dishes, The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook
by Judy Krizmanic is excellent. It also is very savory, but it is geared toward the college student, and therefore the recipies are a little simpler and more basic. well I hope that this helped, and GO VEGGIES! hehehe

This book caught my eye at a gourmet cook shop. The illustrations are as luscious as the recipes. While there are many "new" vegetarian cookbooks, few measure up to the description as this one does.
Beautiful Book, Tasty Recipes.......2001-07-26
I own a number of vegetarian cookbooks, and although all of them are good, they tend to be in the "nuts and grains" variety of cooking. Which I love, but its nice to get a different perspective sometimes, which is why this book is great. It breaks from typical veggie cookbooks in two aspects, actually: types of recipes, and the look of the book. Its simply beautiful, actually. I enjoy flipping through it and looking at the recipes. And so far, although I'm no master cook, the dishes have turned out as well as the pictures.
One downfall, I think, is the focus on mostly Asian dishes (again, I love Asian food, but it would be nice to get a few more non-Asian recipes... maybe in the sequel), and the small number of recipes in the book. I guess you can't have both huge, pretty pictures and lots of text at the same time... oh well.
However, it covers all the basics of vegetarian cooking as well as suggesting some exciting ideas. Pick up the veggie cookbook staples, and then this will make a wonderful addition to your collection!

Many designers have the gift of gab; few can actually write. Kaffe Fassett is a delightful exception. Indeed, the text of Glorious Interiors is something rare in interior design: a down-to-earth account of a complex and sophisticated personal style. Drawing inspiration from circuses, fairgrounds, the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, the liveries of Pakistani trucks, and Slavic peasant costume, Fassett dedicates his book to "all those with a touch of gypsy who share my vision." Going by the vibrant kitsch, the obsessive repetition, and the migrainous, fractal surfaces of his trademark interiors, one suspects that not a few of them have ended up, tragically, in decidedly minimal circumstances, complete with soft white walls and bars on the windows.
Fassett's embroidered flower gardens, frog cushions, trompe l'oeil flower plates, and postage-stamp lampshades teeter spectacularly on the knife's edge separating genius from schizophrenia; his text, meanwhile, really makes the reader think--in a way few other books have ever done--about the emotional power of the richly patterned traditions of eastern Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Fassett contends that Western interiors--the best of them evoking "a sterile beigeness ... that chilled me to the core"--have lost all sense of humor. And he knows just what we need to get it back.

Love the Charted Designs--those included, that is!.......2000-09-07
Kaffe Fassett is a designer that you either love or find almost sea-sickeningly over the top. I've got a foot in both camps--some of it is just too, too much--other things I want to make immediately. My main problem is the lack of charts. He states that one cushion can be easily coverted to a chair seat--true, if there were a chart to begin with. Now, I can understand that a wing back chair might be a one off, but there is no excuse for showing a tantalizing close up of a pillow without a chart! It is too frustrating. And there are far too many references to things that are available as kits from Ehrman--particularly when not all of them are still available. Still worth it for the charts that he does include and for some design ideas--if you are willing to just pile on the patterns!
A World of Color.......2000-04-17
I absolutely loved this book. Although I read it mainly for my interest in mosaics, I found many of the collages appealing as well. The photos are wonderful, colorful and display a great sense of creativity. What a happy feeling this rainbow of colors gives to a person inhabiting these unique rooms. And isn't that what decorating is all about? This book is a must for every creative mind!
Five stars plus!.......1999-11-05
This is one of Kaffe's best books, if not the best. The photos are beautiful, and the displays of his needlepoint tapestries or vests among the collections of furnishings, etc., in his home are truly beautiful. Stunning needlepoint rugs, both of which are available as kits as noted in the book, although the kits are simplified versions of the rugs. Some rag rugs with patterns to make them. Lovely paintings too, if you like Kaffe's style or at least find it appealing. Some needlepoint charts, although I wish there were many more charted items, although some are photographed sufficiently that they can be copied yourself. Just a beautiful book on home decorating, on needlepoint, and on lovely ideas for tapestries.

Great reading for the "stately home" fan.......2006-04-27
Tourism in Britain started with pilgrims seeking out the tomb of Thomas ? Becket at Canterbury, expanded with a renaissance of topographers and antiquarians poking into odd corners of the country, and broadened again with the arrival of foreign visitors in London on the Continental Grand Tour. But the heart of this lovely book is the practice in the 18th and 19th centuries by owners of stately homes of allowing visitors to inspect the premises when they (the owners) were not in residence. (Think Elizabeth Bennett's first encounter with Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.) The Victorians also loved mysterious and romantic locations like Stonehenge and the Roman baths at Bath, and they loved to listen to (and frequently accept uncritically) the bizarre legends associated with them. (No, Julius Caesar did not build the White Tower!) Like all books I've read that were published by the National Trust (without which most of these tax-heavy properties would probably have been torn down decades ago), half the enjoyment is in the hundred-plus illustrations and the seventy color plates. A beautifully produced addition to English social history.

Book Description
In this series of lectures on the painters Hsia Kuei (twelfth-thirteenth centuries), Shen Chou (fifteenth-sixteenth centuries), and Shih-t'ao (seventeenth-eighteenth centuries), Richard Edwards explores the special relationship between the self and landscape in Chinese art. These three painters, each important in his own time and deemed a master by later critics, were all concerned with the subjective in the objective world. In Chinese painting there is no clear desire to separate these two realms; rather, there is a constant, conscious play between the physical reality of the world and the subjective vision of the artist. The artist is continually imitating the world--sometimes more, sometimes less--but he never denies its appearance to the point of total abstraction; nor, in the other extreme, does he claim for the physical world an existence independent of his own involvement.
Richard Edwards is Professor Emeritus of East Asian Art and Art History, University of Michigan.
