Book Description
Penelope Thornton-McClure manages a Rhode Island bookshop rumored to be haunted. When a bestselling author drops dead signing books, the first clue of foul play comes from the store's full-time ghost-a PI murdered on the very spot more than fifty years ago.
Is he a figment of Pen's overactive imagination? Or is the likable, fedora-wearing specter the only hope Pen has to solve the crime?

A intersting read .......2007-09-22
At first I felt the book was slow going, but now that I've finished it, I can't wait to read the next one. I like how the ghost helps her and basically pushes her into being a detective for him. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
A Haunted Bookstore.......2007-03-07
This isn't your ordinary ghost. It's Jack Shepard, PI. Well, 50 years ago anyway. He was shot and killed in front of what is now Penelope McClure's bookstore called, Buy the Book. Penelope held a book signing with an author who choked and died in her store. Now her business is booming. While authorities are looking at her, Penelope and Jack's ghost are trying to solve the crime! Great first installment, I can't wait to get the next one.
Not bad for a first effort........2007-02-16
The premise for this book is certianly different, as we have a ghost of a long-dead P.I. working with the sleuth. Jack Shepard was a private investigator who was shot while investigating a case. The murder happened in a building in Quindicott, Rhode Island in 1949. His murder was never solved, and it left Jack's ghost haunting an old bookstore. When Penelope McClure takes over the store, she finds that she seems to be channelling Jack. The book is also different because it falls under the cozy genre, but with Jack's presence, there is a lot of hard-boiled there too. I found that I got past the far-fetched ghost, and really enjoyed the story. I will certainly read more.
Mike Hammer meets Jessica Fletcher.......2006-11-15
After the suicide of her husband, Penelope Thornton McClure takes the life insurance money and bails out her Aunt Sadie's failing bookshop in Quindicott, Rhode Island. With her investment comes half ownership in the business and unbeknownst to Penelope, a ghost. The ghost is the spirit of hard-boiled 1940's private eye Jack Shepard who was killed in the bookstore many years before. For some reason that he doesn't understand Jack is unable to leave the premises so there he languishes with nothing more to do than throw the occasional scare into anybody he takes a dislike to.
To boost business Penelope (Pen) creates a public events area in hopes of attracting touring authors to her store. Being in a small town though, she doesn't expect to draw the cream of the literary crop and is shocked when Timothy Brennan, one of the top selling mystery writers in the country announces that he is coming to Quindicott on the promotional tour for his new book "Shield of Justice." Shield" is the latest in Brennan's long running series of mysteries featuring detective Jack Shield who just happens to be based on the real life Jack Shepard. When Shepard arrives and begins his lecture Shepard's ghost is none too happy and lets his displeasure be known to anyone who will listen. Oddly, Pen is the only one who can hear him and she soon finds that not only can she hear Jack in her head but that he can also read her thoughts. Naturally she thinks that she is going crazy and only slowly she realizes that she indeed has a "haunted bookshop."
The mystery arrives when the obnoxious Brennan drops dead while giving his lecture. At first everyone assumes it was his bad heart but Jack assures Pen right from the start that it was murder. Once it becomes clear to everyone else that Brennan's death was indeed murder Pen becomes a prime suspect. Not only is her bookstore doing a booming business because of the death but also she is caught on camera handing the author the instrument of his death. Once Pen realizes that she is high on the suspect list she follows Jack's advice and begins to snoop and with Jack's expert help and advice she becomes quite the detective.
As with most first books in a series, this one spends a lot of time introducing the main characters and in this case those characters are realistic and believable. The mystery flows well and the reader is quickly drawn into this very well written story. Unlike many books in this genre there are very few loose ends and red herrings with the only exception being that most life insurance policies don't pay in the event of a suicide. There is also an occasional abrupt change in narration from first to third person that can be a little discomforting but this flaw is fairly minor and infrequent. Most importantly, this author quickly makes her readers care about Pen and her family so that one tends to really worry when they might be in trouble. This is an excellent start to what just might be a superb series.

Rick Riordan has loaded his first mystery with lots of genre baggage: this story about a man coming home to San Antonio, Texas, to rescue his old girlfriend and solve the 12-year-old murder of his sheriff father is a virtual homage to James (The Last Good Kiss) Crumley. But Riordan writes so well about the people and topography of his hometown that he very quickly marks the territory as his own. Tres Navarre has put behind him the teenage days when he and his friend Ralph Arguello would cruise through San Antonio, drinking a ferocious mixture of cheap tequila and Big Red cream soda. A University of California Ph.D. in English plus a fascination with t'ai chi ch'uan led Tres naturally enough to work as a private investigator in San Francisco. But one call from the love of his early life--the mysterious and captivating Lillian Cambridge, now trapped in dangerous work and love relationships--and Tres gladly trades his trendy Peet's coffee for the stronger brews of home.
Book Description
Everything in Texas is bigger...even murder.
Meet Tres Navarre...tequila drinker, Tai Chi master, unlicensed P.I., with a penchant for Texas-size trouble.
Jackson "Tres" Navarre and his enchilada-eating cat, Robert Johnson, pull into San Antonio and find nothing waiting but trouble. Ten years ago Navarre left town and the memory of his father's murder behind him. Now he's back, looking for answers. Yet the more Tres digs, trying to put his suspicions to rest, the fresher the decade-old crime looks: Mafia connections, construction site payoffs, and slick politicians' games all conspire to ruin his homecoming.
It's obvious Tres has stirred up a hornet's nest of trouble. He gets attacked, shot at, run over by a big blue Thunderbird—and his old girlfriend, the one he wants back, turns up missing. Tres has to rescue the woman, nail his father's murderer, and get the hell out of Dodge before mob-style Texas justice catches up to him. The chances of staying alive looked better for the defenders of the Alamo....

You Can Go Home Again--But It's Murder.......2007-07-11
Big Red Tequila introduces Tres Navarre, the unlicensed private investigator, t'ai chi master and English Ph.D. However, in this first book in the series, Tres seems a smaller, humbler figure as he returns home to face the ghosts of his past, including the unsolved murder of his father and the girlfriend he abandoned ten years earlier. He receives a less than Texas-friendly reception as his very presence stirs up memories of the shooting of his father the Sheriff, as well as his decision to cut and run to California. The near universal contempt he encounters from the elders of San Antonio is magnified when his homecoming coincides with the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. Of course, this disdain and periodic run-ins with thugs (who are no match for his martial arts skills)only serve to deepen his resolve. However, the further he digs, the more he finds out that there are some family secrets which should remain hidden.
San Antonio writer Rick Riordan does an admirable job of turning his sun-drenched hometown into a landscape of Gothic menace. Although this is ostensibly a mystery novel, it has elements of a spaghetti Western as the loner hero must face down menace and treachery on every side. Fortunately, there are comic elements, such as Robert Johnston, the enchilada eating cat and Gary Hales, the nosy landlord with a penchant for watering concrete, which keep the drama from becoming overwhelming.
Well-drawn characters, vivid locales and a twisting plot keep this story exciting to the end.
First of a Great Series.......2006-10-12
I picked up on the Tres Navarre series by Rick Riordan in the middle, with Southtown, which was an incredible novel with indelible characters and a page-turning mystery plot. I had to check out this series from the beginning, and The Big Red Tequila, the first book in the series, didn't disappoint me.
Tres Navarre is returning to his hometown of San Antonio after years in California. Two things draw him back--the longing to find out if a perfect romance from early in his life can be rekindled, and the need to find out who killed his father, a law enforcement officer who was gunned down in front of Tres when he was 13.
I love everything about this book--from the real feel of the setting (I've never been to San Antonio but can hear/smell/feel/taste it from the descriptions) to the dialogue, to the memorable characters who are no where near perfect but still likeable people--except for the bad guys, who are suitably vicious. I even love Tres' insane cat, Robert Johnson.
I went right on to the next book in the series (Widowers Two Step) and liked it just as much. Can't wait to read more of this author!
Designed to be trendy, but boring.......2006-06-18
A toughguy who likes Tai Chi - how unpredictable. No, really. Oh, and he has a beautiful but neurotic ex, and then a stable ex, and there's supposed to be drama. And then he investigates some plot retired from old episodes of Dallas twenty years ago. This isn't badly written, and if you haven't seen through Robert Parker yet, maybe you'll still enjoy it, but to me it was predictably "unpredictable" and devoid of any real reading value.
Must Read.......2005-10-01
This is Rick Riordan's first novel and it is wonderful. Tres Navarre is introduced (as this is a series) as a PI in San Antonio. This book will delight those who like mystery/thrillers or books that take place in Texas. Riordan is a masterful writer who does an extremely well job of describing his characters and surrounds. Read this book and the ones that follow and you will not be dissappointed.

The Average Customer Review is four stars, and I agree. It seems everyone has a detective novel these days, and I would think it would be difficult to create a new character that stands out from the pack. Riordan has done this with Tres Navarre. The next couple Navarre novels get better, so start here.

Book Description
Can an ordinary girl turn into the magical hero Pretear? In this volume, we find out what really happened 16 years ago, and why Hayate feels guilty about it. Another girl named Takako had been chosen to be the Pretear. She was scared and didn't want to fight, but she kept at it because she liked Hayate. When she told Hayate her feelings for him, Hayate refused her because as one of the Knights, he wasn't permitted to return her feelings. Takako's anger transformed her into the Princess of Disaster. This story makes Himeno even more determined, and during one battle, her desire to protect the land allows her to transform into the "White Pretear."

Pretear Vol. 2.......2007-02-14
Anything that can get my 11 year old to read is a good thing. She flew through this series in less than 3 days and rereads them regularly. So, even though I may be more of a 'novel' book fan over the manga - I am happy that they are around and Pretear is one of my daughter's favorites!
Pretear Rules!.......2005-03-01
I first saw Pretear on Anime Network On Demand. I only saw the last few episodes but I got pretty into it. I soon purchased the entire anime season from ADV Films (13 episodes) and fell in love with it once I got the whole story! The anime series is 15+ (I'm 12), but even past that, it was awesome and there was a new adventure around every corner. I soon got this manga, because it was the only "Pretear" volume the store had at the time, and I totally adored it! I'm looking forward to the next ones. The only downfall to this series is that it's fairly short, but is totally worthwhile.
In this manga, join Himeno, Hayate, Sasame, Goh, Kei, Shin, Hajime, and Mannen in this great adventure as you find out the truth about the Princess of Disaster and what Hayate did 16 years ago.
Book Description
This book examines the psychological obstacles of diagnosis such as panic, fear, anger, shame, and guilt and how to put them into perspective. Through proper maintenance, diet, and education, this book is tailor-made for the diabetic or anyone with a diabetic in their life who wants to overcome the negative emotions associated with this disease and learn the coping skills necessary to integrate diabetes into their daily life.
Customer Reviews:
It's OK to feel sad or confused.......2006-03-27
This masterful study of the relationship of diabetes and depression, among other emotional effects of discovering one has a chronic disease, will give you hope that you CAN DEAL with your illness proactively and positively. Not the most up to date advice on this topic but one of the best.
Readable style, positive, compassionate approach.......2001-06-09
Dr. Rubin and his co-authors write in an interactive, conversational style. I found this enjoyable and engaging. There is enough information without excessive detail. I felt as if I were having a lively conversation with good friends who all had a personal experience with my condition. I got through the whole book in an evening after the kids were in bed.
Individuals can experience a variety of negative emotions in response to the stress of living with diabetes. The same type of emotion may show up at different points in the course of the disorder. Emotions can have a huge effect on one's ability to maintain good diabetic control.
The authors give clear understandable vignettes that illustrate how an emotion such as anger can cause glucose levels to skyrocket. They also suggest ways of coping with these emotional states. At the same time, they do not malign all unpleasant emotions. Sometimes, fear, anger and denial might serve a useful purpose.
I did have a small stylistic concern. I would have preferred that the three authors either all use their first names or all use their formal titles.
I enjoyed reading this book. I think the conversational style would lend itself well to an audiocassete version.
Helpful Book.......1999-11-28
This book deals with emotional and feeling aspects of diabetes. Presented in an interview and response format I found the book interesting to read. The audience for this book is clearly those with diabetes or immediate family members of those with diabetes.
The authors affirm typical feelings of diabetes patients and present information to comfort those with diabetes that virtually all of their feelings are normal and shared by others with the disease. Ideas to cope with these feelings are suggested in the book which may or may not work for everyone. Therefore, this isn't necessarily a book full of solutions that will work for all with diabetes, but a book about what most people with diabetes feel and how some people cope with these feelings.
I think people with diabetes will better understand themselves and their feelings toward diabetes after reading the book. This is the best book I have read on dealing with the emotional and feelings aspects of diabetes. I recommend it.
A helpful book discussing psychological aspects of diabetes........1999-03-24
I found this book to be helpful in addressing issues not covered in other diabetes books. Rather than give diet and exercise tips, it discusses the psychological battle that occurs when one is struggling to cope with diabetes, and it provides insight on how to deal with issues such as denial, anger, depression, grief, fear, frustration and guilt. Each chapter ends with a short section aimed at those who want to help the diabetic. The Q&A format can be annoying because the two authors (one of whom is diabetic) who ask the questions can be glib at times. But the replies by Dr. Rubin, who is a Certified Diabetes Educator and therapist at Johns Hopkins, are enormously insightful.
This book was so long I never read it either........1999-03-09
Three hundred and twelve pages, come on, I have a life, just help me out, don't drag it out

Better Homes and Garden Diabetic Cookbook.......2007-02-13
We were very disappointed in this cookbook. The recipes are high in cholesterol and carbohydrates and do not indicate the amount of sugar. A lot of the recipes are high in sodium. We were looking for some good healthy recipes for diabetics. The book seemed to be old and out of date with current information available.
New Diabetic Cookbook (Better Homes & Gardens).......2005-10-15
My son is a diabetic and I wanted to have a resource book for healthy recipes for him when he and his family visit. I am not a kitchen whiz, but this cookbook is perfect. It truly represents the quality we've come to expect over the years from the Better Homes & Gardens product line. The recipes are great - easy to follow with a wonderful variety of all the food groups and categories. It is nicely illustrated also. Thanks for meeting all my expectations.

Cooking for a diabetic is learning to cook all over again. Many useful recipes.
A high quality & beautiful cookbook!.......2002-12-03
I already own a couple of dozen diabetic cookbooks. I bought this one based on the reputation of the Better Homes and Gardens quality products. This one continues that tradition. The book is not only beautiful, but includes all the nutrition information, such as ADA exchanges, Joslin exchanges, etc., that anyone could want. Many of the recipes I've found are enjoyed by the whole family...including the fussy eaters and those who insist on flavorful food. This book shows you how to remove fat and and calories and still retain the fabulous flavor in food. Excellent book.

This cookbook features meals from salads to desserts as well as snacks and special treats for better health for everyone. With recipes from Better Homes & Gardens Diabetic Cookbook, meals can be made considering the needs of a diabetic without 'singling-out' that person with an unusual plate of food. These are delicious meals with the food exchange system used (a list is at the back of the book for making following meal plans easier). Even attractive garnishes are suggested so these recipes can be used to appeal to more than just the palate. Normal ingredients in the pantry or easily purchased at the local grocery store make these meals do-able.This is a practical purchase for any home and a must-have for those with diabetes.
Simple easy to use explanations/recipes for new diabetics........1997-06-26
I was in a panic having just learned the importance of following a diabetic diet plan. It is crucial to maintaining good health and preventing further problems for diabetics. The diet plan (which you need to get from a dietician in order to use this book effectively) was prescribed but we couldn't envision following it on a day to day basis. This book really helped us get started right away. The use of pictures and lists simplifies what at first seemed like a maze. I highly recommend it if you (have already received your diabetic diet plan and) feel you'd like a little hand holding during your learning process... and then some

Book Description
Diabetes has hit epidemic levels, affecting up to 17 million Americans. Even children and adolescents are developing type 2 diabetes, once considered an illness that occurred in adults. Despite these statistics, people with diabetes can control their illness, thanks to innovations in insulins, insulin pens and pumps, and nutrition. Better Homes and Gardens Carb Counter's Diabetic Cookbook can be a key tool in managing diabetes and improving quality of life. The book features the most current meal-planning strategy recognized by the American Diabetes Association: counting carbohydrates. Simply put, carbohydrate is the nutrient that has the greatest effect on blood glucose levels, and eating about the same amount of carbohydrate at the same times each day keeps these levels in range. More than 220 mouthwatering healthful recipes, a week's sample menus, and portion control tips make carb counting easy and enjoyable. Complete nutrition information accompanies each recipe. This cookbook also contains information about prediabetes risk factors, ways to prevent the illness, plus a wealth of resources.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2007-01-31
This book goes to the heart of diabetes carbohydrates and their metabolisim and why you have to count carbs. This book helps to explain diabetic equivalents and their relationship to carbs. It also has very good recipies.
Not for Type 1.......2003-01-31
I purchased this book for my wife who is Type 1 and wants to count carbs. This book is for those who are Type 2 and states several pages into the book that it is not for Type 1. No where in the advertised description of the book is that very necessary information given. I will be returing the book, how disappointing.

Customer Reviews:
I've never been a good cook but this book has changed that.......2006-01-23
I have many recipe books but this one I keep going back to. The recipes are easy to follow but I was looking for something fast and great tasting. This book has it. The absolute best recipes are Filet Mignon with Portobello Sauce, Veg. Stuffed Chicken and the Turkey Enchiladas and they can all be prepared from start to finish in 30 minutes. Some of the recipes are not low carb but this is still a great book.
Maybe not too low carb... but.......2005-12-20
Delicious, healthy recipes! I have tried many recipes from this book and continue to go back to it. Most "low carb" book have no respect for actual calories and are full of full saturated fat dishes ("oh no, not the tomato, but pile on the butter!" kind of philosophy). This one has low cal dishes that are easy to prepare and always come out tasty. Easy every day ingredients, full nutrition info, broken into categories (eggs, meat, seafood...). Great book. Highly recommend!
Only Cookbook You'll Ever Need.......2004-02-21
This is an excellent book! Easy to read, 7 pages of unbiased useful scientific information, carb counter chart, non-extremist, 30 pages of all day meal plans, baking tips sheet, and 200 pages of really great recipes in 8 categories such as appetizers, salads, desserts, side dishes and different meats. All this and it's inexpensive. (I plan to give it as gifts to my friends, too.) Helps you balance carbs/protein/fats at any age or activity level. I hope this can counteract the very lame negative comments others have made about this wonderful book. Check it out for yourself!
Diabetic, maybe - NOT LOW CARB.......2004-01-14
This would be a good cookbook for diabetics who still eat flour, potatoes and sugar, BUT for those of us following a diet such as Atkins these recipes are useless! One recipe called for 1 1/2 CUPS of flour!!! I about fell on the floor. And a word to those people that think diets such as Atkins are all fat all the time: 1. You need to eat higher levels of fat since that is your energy source on this diet. Low-carb AND low-fat is a DANGEROUS combination. 2. Having said that, you do not eat bacon at every meal. I eat chicken, fish and veggies, too - I just don't freak out if the restaurant puts butter sauce on my veggies.
This is SENSIBLE.......2003-11-24
Jeez, the recipes might have a smidgen of flour or cornmeal BUT they are not laden with mayo, high fat meats, and tons of cheese like the other low carb cookbooks I have seen. If you are interested in cutting back on carbs without clogging your arteries, this cookbook is AWESOME!!!!!!!

Book Description
In the three years since his first single entered the Billboard charts, country singer Garth Brooks has become the most popular recording artist in America. He's left Michael Jackson and Guns N' Roses eating his dust, and for good reason-he's an eloquent songwriter, a traditional country crooner with a rock 'n' roll twist, and he works the stage like a Nashville-born-and-raised Mick Jagger. He's rediscovered country music for a whole new generation, and breathed new life into it for country's original fans, leaving us, his fans, panting for more.
A big sound and a big star: Garth Brooks.

Outlines Garth's Climb To The Top!.......1997-01-21
Received this book for Christmas and I love it. Even
though the information is out-of-date for those who
have followed Garth in his climb to the top, I still
enjoy reading all the details, some of which I did not
know
Good book to learn facts about Garth.......1997-01-15
This is a good book if you don't know much about Garth.
I have the Garth Scrapbook and that is the best book I have
read. I think I like also because it has many pictures of
him. Both books are not up to date though. I think this
book is worth your money if you are a Garth fan.
