Book Description

When Catherine da Costa, a wealthy Manhattan matron, learns she has only a short time to live, she realizes that her family tree will die unless she passes on its legacy and traditions to her granddaughters. But Suzanne and Francesca, beautiful young women caught up in trendy causes and ambitious careers, have no interest in the past.Catherine almost despairs until one night she is visited by the ghost of her family's anscestor, an indomitable Renaissance businesswoman named Hannah Mandes. The ghost of Hannah Mendes encourages Catherine to use every trick in the book to coerce the granddaughters to journey across Europe and acquaint themselves with their roots. While the sisters honor their grandmother's request out of loyalty, they believe their quest is futile--until it starts to uncover ancient pages from Hannah Mendes's fascinating memoir, and brings new loves into their lives.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful history, rather tired plot.......2007-09-23

Naomi Ragen has a great love for Jewish history and religion, and this shows in her book on the Spanish Inquisition and the fascinating and little-known Jewish heroine, Hannah Mendes. Her accounts of Sephardic traditions ring true, and she is clearly a great believer in traditions of all sorts. We are all connected to our families of the past and future, and this is our immortality, Ragen believes. Only by connecting can we live a meaningful life.

Both of the granddaughters, Suzanne and Francesca, are disconnected from their roots, each in her own way. Suzanne is caught up in meaningless relationships and Francesca in her career. The plot of the book is their journey of rediscovery of their past.

However, like other reviewers, I was put off by the rather weary plot and by the wooden characterizations of the male leads. There is nothing wrong with a good romance novel, but Ragen resorts too often to tired cliches of writing and of characterization.

Still, I learned a great deal about the Sephardic heritage, and -- perhaps partaking of the coincidences in the book -- I just discovered Cecil Roth's acclaimed biography of Mendes, Dona Gracia of the House of Nasi, among my book collection, and now I plan to read it.

4 out of 5 stars excellent read........2007-07-13

This book is all that the historic novel reader might be looking for. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Historical Fiction.......2007-06-12

I gave this book 5 stars because the fictionalized historical parts were so fascinating. It was hard to put down. It's even more fascinating when you realize Hannah Mendes a/k/a Dona Gracia really existed -- one step ahead of the Spanish Inquisition.

I must confess, though, that I skimmed some of the contemporary material as it's not at all of the same caliber. Maybe if you like romance novels (I generally don't), it would be fine, but I was disappointed.

In short, I heartily recommend this book. Just be forewarned that it's uneven in places.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Naomi Ragen novel.......2007-04-15

I greatly enjoyed how the author wove a historical novel into a contemporary romance. And I confess that I love the happy ending, with the heroines and heroes ending up together, which I hope isn't giving it away. Of course I found the Jewish aspect fascinating, especially learning about the life and times of Hannah Mendes (the ghost). I think this book was an inspiration in starting me writing my own historical novels, Rashi's Daughters, Book 1: Joheved and Rashi's Daughters, Book II: Miriam.
Thank you Naomi Ragen.

3 out of 5 stars good effort, but with some problems.......2006-09-28

I have to admire this book because of the effort that it took to research and write it, and the fact that it has educational value. The reading of old manuscripts was very interesting, as well as traveling to old cities. It certainly was a decent book with many redeeming qualities, but there were also pretty many things that started to really get on my nerves.

At first the premise of communicating with an ancient relative was kind of interesting, and it seemed meaningful until I find out that the entire reason Hannah talks to Catherine is "to find husbands for the girls." This just makes it sound so lame, not enough reason for a ghost to show up after hundreds of years. Maybe if it was written in another way it could seem less lame? But even lamer is the way she thinks it's a dream and then sees Hannah's gold threads on the ground...that seems very cliche.

All those descriptions of timeless elegance and unparalelled splendor get kind of redundant. It seems to be all these people know, so why would they describe it so much? It also seems kind of prissy. I can't relate to all those dazzling jewels, being that I'm part of the lower middle class and all.

It seems that almost every character in this novel experiences love at first sight, the kind where you just know that you are soulmates and the two of you become one person even though you don't know anything about each other. I'm not going to say that never ever happens, but it's probably extremely rare; maybe one per every 50,000 people. And here in this book every single person experiences that. Aren't they lucky.

The author fails to make me like some of the characters. I think it is Suzanne who works in the rape crisis center? I don't like her. She is a preachy knowitall who also seems naive and selfish. She ditches her family to run off with someone she didn't say a word to. (I didn't like him either, especially when he reveals that he doesn't speak to his father because his father married a non-Jew. He sounds very bigoted in the way he defends this.) And I'm not the kind of person who goes calling people sluts, but I also thought she was a slut. Since she is a main, protagonistic character, it would help if I actually liked her.

There is a lot of philosophical debate in this book about whether a person should stay with traditions that they don't feel or abandon them; whether they should be part of other cultures; whether they should feel obligated to their elders. I liked this about the book and I remember some good dialogue.

But the conclusion annoys me: the message of this book seems to be that you should marry someone of the same race as you so that your race won't die out. (It's also implied that if you don't "feel" the traditions, you eventually will if you just keep doing them.) I can even see how this is tied in with the plot of the book, but still it becomes preachy. I think this is a low priority when it comes to criteria in looking for a spouse. Some people have a hard enough time finding a nice mate of the same species, let alone a member of the opposite sex who is of the same ethnic group! Preserving a race seems unimportant when compared to entire species going extinct because of our overpopulation, and the idea that you should be a breeder just to carry on the family line, even if you have no desire to have children, kind of makes me puke.

I did kind enjoy this book though, for the parts that were well-written, and also for the parts that annoyed me, because I like to be annoyed.

Master detective Judge Dee sets out to solve a puzzling double murder

tranquil landscape of academic life. A student has been murdered; a
beautiful poetess is accused of whipping her maidservant to death; and
further mysteries lie in the shadows of the Shrine of the Black Fox.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good for Background Material.......2000-09-30

This isn't the kind of book to pick up if you're looking for an intricate mystery full of twists and reversals, or for a thriller that will keep you eagerly turning the pages in a rush of excitement and dread. Good ol' Judge Dee doesn't really have to knock himself out too much to solve this problem; the clues and confessions practically come crawling and whimpering to him.

But if you're interested in a different setting than usual, this might be your...um...cup of tea. It's set in a China of hundreds of years ago, with a society that's different from the West in many of its attitudes but all too similar in basic human fears and needs.

The characterization is not too deep, but you can find a good amount of material here about customs and clothing and buildings and food. The period details, in other words, are really more important than the plot.

This is a good tool for a fantasy role-player doing some research for her next character. Or, if you only have a couple of hours and you need something to read, this slim little volume is not a bad choice. Just don't expect to be blown away in wonder.

4 out of 5 stars The strength of this book lies not in the story..........1999-05-08

As far as plot goes, this book isn't all that great. Van Gulik wrote his Judge Dee stories in his spare time and apparantly didn't have a lot of it. What makes this book worth reading, though, is the impecable recreation of classical Chinese society and Confucian social structure. That being kept in mind, this book is a worthy read.

          5 out of 5 stars Second time's the charm..........2003-07-02

When I first read this book, when it was published, I was *so* excited that I would get to see more of Gael's Elves. Strands of Starlight was so haunting, so beautiful...I couldn't stand it.

So I immediately started Mazes of Moonlight and found that I wasn't going to be reading about those characters that I had fallen in love with in the first book. My disappointment tainted the reading and I came away feeling that this was the least of the Children of Elthia books.

Years later I decided to reread the series, this time really paying attention to the way they were written and to the individual stories told. Mazes of Moonlight ending up being just as powerful, just as moving and easily on par with the rest.

So for those who read Strands of Starlight and who felt some disappointment in Mazes of Moonlight...give it another chance...it's so worth it. For those of you trying to decide of the series is worth it...I cannot tell you enough that you need to read these books, all of them. They are some of my all time favorites.

          5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2000-03-29

This is the kind of book that (along with Gael Baudino's other elvish novels) creates it's own universe, it's own logic and it's own magic. It's one of the books I read over and over, just to go back there. The characters have believable passion and purpose, and everything really is touched with an otherworldly kind of light. I'd love to say more, but I'd hate to give anything away. It's better to just read for yourself a few times...

5 out of 5 stars A captivating blend of history and myth.......2000-01-20

I found this book, the second in a trilogy, almost impossible to put down.It is a beautifully written blend of Historical fact and (is it really) fiction. Gael Baudino exposes the hipocracy of the Church and the damage caused by the Papal schism on one hand; and the beauty and power,of unconditioal love and positive thought on the other. I found myself recalling the words of Martin Armstrongs poem "The Gage" (Man afraid to be alive shuts his soul in senses five). I believe that the thoughts and ideas evoked by this book will continue to influence my thoughts and actions for the rest of my life. Can't wait to get my hands on the third book of this trilogy.

                5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Helpful.......2006-06-21

Now that I'm on my second go-round as a caregiver for a parent, I thought I knew the ropes fairly well. So I wasn't expecting much new information from this book.

                I was wrong.

There's plenty of up-to-date help in this volume -- from assistance with legal affairs through taking care of the caregiver -- especially when that caregiver is you. While it does not cover any particular topic in great depth, it is a well-thought-out overview of the caregiving process.

If you're just getting started as a caregiver, this book can give you plenty of solid help!

This book is a complete reference for family caregivers. Editor, Beth Witrogen McLeod, founder of the National Family Caregivers Association, presents an excellent guide for family caregivers. Rosalynn Carter has written a forward highly recommending the book to "family caregivers and those who support them".
McLeod includes clues for realizing when parents and older relatives need help and how to go about helping in a sensitive, understanding way. She provides checklists for all the many facets of caregiving such as gauging the skills of a patient, questions to ask the medical professionals, ways to arrange the household for easier access and whether the caregiver is taking care of herself.

There is an extensive list of other resources at the back of the book.

This book is absolutely necessary when the time comes to think about your parents, and their aging, and what to do just in case.
How do I approach this w/ my parents? or , what child will be responsible for the arrangements?, or, why me?

This book takes you thru the difficult questions, situations (especially w/ other siblings) and any thing else one WILL come across when deciding elder=care and how it applies to YOUR PARENTS. Don't forget the video companion. Beatiful ...

5 out of 5 stars What an amazing guide!.......2002-10-02

Considering that caregiving responsibilities will impact every single person at some point in their life, this is the resource guide to own!! It truly is a "Caregiver's Companion" and a must-have for every caregiver. When the baby-boomers become aged (and it's starting to happen), a huge percentage of the population will require caregiving. This book gives resources and checklists, along with anecdotal stories from the people in the trenches. What a great book. I highly recommend this as a gift for you, your family, your friends - ANYONE who has to deal with the complexities of caregiving. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars London Food Icon on the River.......2007-02-23

Having been to the restaurant twice in my adult life I can not only recommend the London River Cafe as a destination place but now I can actually produce some sensational, yet quite easy, recipes in the here and now. Sometimes our palette can only be satisfied with the real thing but the new book, "Italian Two Easy", is as close as you can get. I highly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars More Great, Simple Recipes. Buy It!!!.......2006-06-15

`Italian Two Easy, Simple Recipes from the London River Café' by proprietor / chefs, Rose Gray and Ruth Rodgers is the sixth cookbook by these ladies, and I welcome it with almost as much anticipation as I did the next installment of `The Lord of the Rings' or at least the DVD release of same.

As the title suggests, this volume is the second of a pair of volumes of `Easy Italian' recipes, the first published about two years ago, copyrighted in 2004. This volume actually improves on the earlier volume in that I found the layout of the first volume very annoying, to the point where it detracted from the value of the book, in spite of the fact that the recipes were almost uniformly excellent.

Gray and Rogers reaffirm two major themes with this volume. First, they celebrate the genius of the Italian pantry with its rich collection of wines, olive oils, cheeses, salt cured fish, capers, breads, pasta, sausages, and cured meats. All of these products are centuries old, enhanced just a bit by the modern methods for canning beans and tomatoes. These commercial, yet artisinally prepared products are such great ingredients that one can assemble fabulous dishes with very little effort. And, that is what Mmes. Gray and Rodgers' recipes are all about.

The second main behind their books is that their recipes follow a very typically English approach to recipe writing. As I wrote to Ms. Diane Jacob, author of `Will Write for Food', there seems to me to be three types of recipe writing. First is the Julia Child model of `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' which covers every detail of cooking technique in exquisite detail. The second is the Joel Robuchon style found in the `Simply French' collaboration with Patricia Wells, where the point of a recipe is often to demonstrate some salient aspect of an important ingredient technique. The third is the Elizabeth David style which is light on asides or voluminous comments on technique or ingredients. This is the style that has become so successful for most recent and contemporary English writers such as Jane Grigson, Nigel Slater, Nigella Lawson, Tamasin Day-Lewis, Gray and Rogers, and their protégé, Jamie Oliver. Now this is not the style of recipe writing you want to deal with when you are just starting out, unless it happens to be in Slater's and Day-Lewis recent large cookery manuals, `Appetite' and `Tamasin's Kitchen Bible' respectively. This is also not the style of cookbook you want if you wish to dig deep into the heart of Italian cuisine, as Gray and Rodgers do not (at least in this book) go into the techniques of either bread, pasta, or sausage making. For these techniques and important insights into the backbone of classical Italian cooking, I refer you to the grand dame of Italian cooking writing in English, Marcella Hazan and her `Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking' and her most recent `Marcella Says'.

As I have said of Jamie Oliver's books, Gray and Rogers' books are primarily celebrations of the simplicity of the Italian cuisine, although Oliver's exuberance comes through just a bit better than from our ladies. One thing you will not get from Gray and Rogers is a reflection of the typical Mario Batali statement that the Italian cuisine is the cuisine of poverty. While hams and cheeses and sausages may have been a necessity 200 years ago, in England and the United States, these Italian specialties are pretty dear. Prosciutto di Parma and Parmesano-Reggiano both run to $16 or more dollars a pound or more.

So, if you know your way around the kitchen and can afford `the good stuff', genuine imported Italian ingredients, then I heartily recommend this and all of the other five Gray / Rogers volumes, especially if you are fond of entertaining or like to cook every day, but don't want to spend three hours in the kitchen every day. These books demonstrate why it is so easy for Rachael Ray, for example, to put together fast meals based on the Italian pantry, but these recipes are, unlike Ms. Ray's fare, tested in restaurant experience.

Some of the recipes do require some Italian ingredients that are still not that easy to come by. One, for example, is bottarga, the sun-dried roe of the gray mullet. I have never searched for it, but I have also never seen it in my local megamart, although I suspect the big New York City food emporia such as Zabar's are sure to carry it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the appendix of suppliers in the back of the book were all American sources and not UK sources.

If I were to pick one especially strong point of the Gray / Rogers volumes, it would be their vegetable recipes. I have read and reviewed a number of excellent books on vegetable recipes, most especially Jack Bishop's several books, and I still find unique recipes among the River Café cuisine, especially in dishes which combine two or more vegetables and therefore don't easily fit into a book organized by vegetable. My only caveat is that since this book is all about the recipes and nothing but the recipes, it sometimes lets some bad advice slip by as when it suggests you discard the stems from a head of broccoli. I happen to love broccoli right down to its tougher stems, which one can always peel, so I suggest you be a bit more frugal here.

The second best aspect of the River Café books is their wealth of simple pasta recipes.

The bottom line is that these River Café cookbooks are easily one of the best sources of quick Italian influenced books I have seen anywhere, without the annoying and cloying Rayspeak chatter from Ms. Rachael. One could do worse than to fill your entire kitchen library with Gray and Rogers cookbooks, with Marcella Hazan's works in the library to fill in the background.

Molto buono — over 150 deliciously easy recipes from the founders of London’s famous, Italian cuisine restaurant, River Café — stylish cooking without the hassle.

Following the massive success of their first book, River Café Cook Book Easy, Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray have created yet another superb book based on the same principle of perfect, no-hassle Italian food.

Now, their new book takes even more of the hassle out of midweek cooking and weekend entertaining, making it easier still to create delicious, nutritious yet elegant meals in moments.

In River Café Two Easy, Ruth and Rose have created a selection of delightfully simple mozzarella recipes, easy-to-assemble salads, perfect pasta, grilled meat and fish recipes, and special-occasion cakes and puddings, none of which require hours spent in the kitchen. Instead, the delicious results come from the wonderful flavours in the fresh, readily available ingredients.

With recipes like Potato and pancetta soup; Tomato, dried porcini and parmesan pasta; Lemon and almond tart; and Pannacotta with chocolate, this book will have you planning tomorrow’s meals before today’s have been digested.

Standouts include the restored Liberton House, shown in dappled sunlight from its garden, as well as fishermen's cottages with boat-shaped "sterns" that defy the gales.

Artist Sol LeWitt's wall drawings are shown in two parts in this book- how they are executed, and the final product. LeWitt's career also includes working for architect I.M. Pei, and coining the term "conceptualism". The book is designed perfectly, and the only drawback is there are no pictures of the artist, or any interviews.

As a group, Led Zeppelin were reluctant interviewees, preferring to let their music speak for them. Even as individuals they were guarded, revealing little until the acclaim became so great that they could ignore the media no longer. Here is their story, as they told it, from the band's formation through the death of John Bonham to the present day. B/w photos.

3 out of 5 stars A definite for the Zep fanatic.......2003-03-07

I too was once a Led Zeppelin fanatic. I bought anything and everything that began with the letters "L" and "Z"...including this book.

It's not bad. It's not great, but it's not bad. The book is a collection of quotes from Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham on a variety of subjects ranging from music to their well known problems with the music press to life on the road etc, etc. The topics don't get much heavier than that although that's not a big deal. I mean, does anyone really care what John Bonham has to say about the state of international affairs? I don't think so. At the end are a few sanctimonious quotes from Robert Plant about no man being an island and Jimmy Page saying that he's searching for an angel with a broken wing.

Whatever. Judging by the age of some of his girlfriends I'd say he spent most of his time looking for her at the local Jr. High School.

Anyway, the biggest flaw with this book is that there are no dates accompanying the quotations. So you don't really get a feel for how the band members grew or progressed as people as they got richer, older and supposedly wiser. Bad omission by the editors.

If you love Zep the way I used to love them, buy this. If you're just a casual fan then stick w/the music.

                    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2002-05-28

This book is great, because it is TRUE! It really IS in there own words! The book starts from the beginning of the forming of the band, even before Led Zeppelin, and continues past Robert, Jimmy & JPJ's solo work,up until the reunion of Page & Plants long waited for reunion tour, in 1995. There are also quotes in here from their late manager Peter Grant. But you get MORE than THAT! You get LOADS of pictures throughout the WHOLE book, pictures taken all through a 30 year time span. Many pictures I have never seen before, (and I though I've seen them all)!
Also! Did you ever wonder what the song "Thats the Way" is about? I always did! To my surprise, Robert explains it in this book! (and I'm so relieved) Other songs too! and about ALL their albums & movie.
This is a GREAT reference book! Great to show all your Zep Head friends, and discuss! I just have 2 questions I cannot find anywhere, and if anyone knows the answers please send me an I.M. on aol instant messenger! #1 What is Robert Plants Exact hight and approximate weight? #2 What size are his tight hip hugger jeans?! LOL! (I'm female, I saw him in 2nd row on the floor EXACTLY 1 year ago today, and he smiled at me 3x, I threw him a gift, he was flattered)!
