5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sequel........2007-06-16

This story continues the sad but beautiful journey of Pei. A chinese silk worker. I love any story that takes you into someone's heart. This story does just that. Gail Tsukiyama is a wonderful writer.

5 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads.......2007-02-07

You need to read Women of Silk first, and you will love this book. It is easy reading and Gail Tsukiyama is a wonderful story teller.

4 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads: A Novel.......2006-07-12

This is a wonderful sequel to "Women of the Silk". I thoroughly enjoyed the continuing story and the characters, both the old ones and the new ones.
I think the timeline is a very interesting part of World history. I would love to see these books made into a movie.

2 out of 5 stars The Language of Threads: A Novel.......2005-07-07

This was a less than stellar sequal to The Women of the Silk but it did finish the story of Pei to some extent. I found the historical aspect of the novel the most interesting and the story of the women the least believable

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first!.......2004-03-18

Although "Women of the Silk" was one of the best books Gail Tsukiyama wrote, I would have to say that her sequel was more appealing than the first. Pei is once again on her own, having to leave the silk factory, and has an orphan named Ji Shen. Pei lost her best friend Jin, who left them a job in Hong Kong. Pei had many jobs while the Japanese stormed into China, destroying homes and villages. Pei managed to survive the bombings and having to lose so many friends, including the orphan Ji Shen. Pei's will to survive and living life to the fullest was what made this book so inspiring.

The second book in the best book series. I never want the books to end. The characters build from book to book. I recommend reading them in order. This is a series you do not want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars GO-GO BOY-TOY PRIVATE DICK !!.......2005-04-12

JACKSON SQUARE JAZZ is a sequel offering to BOURBON STREE BLUES, and stars the erotically charged character Milton Scott Bradley. Scotty has decided to forego go-go dancing, and pursue a more "stable" profession as a private investigator. He becomes involved with a pre-Olympian figure skater, and from that intimate encounter, the entire story flows. Complex and complicated, the story takes the reader on a journey through New Orleans on a quest for a murderer, an historical treasure, passion, and mystery. Scotty is once again joined with his sometimes sex partners, Special Agent Frank, and the Cat Burglar Colin. Throw in the recurring characters of New Orleans Police Department Detective Venus, and Detective Blaine Tujague (2 characters that appear in both the Scotty Bradley and the Chanse MacLeod series), and one has a novel loaded with fun and adventure. Of particular note is the fact that Scotty is rather religious...imagine...but in a rather unconventional way.

I was impressed by Greg Herren's "author's note" at the end of the novel. He provides for the reader a glimpse into his motivation for writing this book, as well as heaping praise upon the New Orleans Police and Fire Departments for their handling of the May 11, 1988 fire at the Cabildo in Jackson Square

This is a great book....read it and enjoy! I am sincerely hoping for more of the Scott Bradley mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars One who likes to read.......2005-04-06

I found this book and his first one to be well writing. With info about New Orleans and what to look forward to for someone who has the chance to visit it during Decadance. Plus a little historical info as well. Scotty is the guy that if it could happen to someone it usually did. So it gave alot of eye opening info into the scene in New Orleans during Southern Decadance. It also brought out the good in a person (Scotty) to help someone (Bryce) who was in trouble and see it that he was taken care of. Plus Scotty had to deal with his own feelings about 2 guys who were both very interested in having a relationship with him.
All in all I thought it was a very good book and I look forward to reading other books writing by Herren.

2 out of 5 stars Par for the course.......2004-11-19

I picked this up because my library had it labeled as Fiction, so I was disappointed to find it was yet another murder mystery, not my favorite genre. This one was better than most gay-themed mysteries as the author wasn't trying to dazzle us with his non-stop wit and writes competently. But like most mysteries, this was full of the coincidences and implausabilities that are the stock-in-trade of mystery writers. The protagonist is not particularly likable, just so attractive that he has to fight off "pretty boys" with a stick and treats his would-be boyfriends badly because he's just too hot to give up his promiscuous life. The voodoo visions and tarot card readings didn't help but were easily skipped, and by the 100th time he invoked his "Goddess" or his brother called him "my queen," I was quite ready to skim. I blame my local library for misrepresentation, since as mysteries go this was par for the course.

5 out of 5 stars Overcoming Stereotypes.......2004-10-12

When I began reading Greg Herren's series about Scotty, the gogo boy turned PI, I was worried that it would soon devolve into a series of gay stereotypes. After all, when we first meet Scotty, he's dancing on a French Quarter bar for tips wearing little more than a smile. Fortunately, Herren knows the scene well enough to play with the stereotypes rather than succumbing to them. Scotty is an engaging character and the books are spiced with humor, sex, and intrigue. I look forward to more.

Book Description

In 1875, Edwina Von Stetina, a young naturalist from London, unexpectedly inherited Mewingham Manor, the isolated country home of her seafaring uncle, Captain Bartholomew Katt. Edwina never met Katt - the black sheep of the family - but she heard many stories about the mysterious estate that he filled with exotic species collected in his travels.

This journal is the remarkable chronicle of Edwina's first year at Mewingham Manor as she discovers the secrets of Katt's lifetime work: the delightful miniature winged cats called Flittens, and their mischievous tagalongs, the tiny flying Mice.

In the storytelling tradition of Gnomes and Dinotopia, a fantastic new world comes to life through Von Stetina's fanciful depiction of a never-before-seen species.

Mewingham Manor "Observations on a Curious New Species" is a joyous, happy book for all ages. I fell in love with Laura Von Stetina's flittens, and the delightful paintings are totally charming. Every child should have a copy and every mother will enjoy reading it too!

This book has so proudly found a home here in Cornwall with us. Cornwall, the land of fairies, where real fairies actually live and it is fantastic to see in print, the history of Mewing Manor and it's adorable residents !
This book through it's descriptive details and amazing artwork, captures one's heart and soul and sinks you back into time, to the days when children once believed that fairies were real and one's imagination would so easily venture into that magical world !
This book will bring back to it's readers ( young and old ), a world that isn't so lost or forgotten after all !

5 out of 5 stars Mewingham Manor.......2003-12-03

Authored by Laura Von Stetina, Mewingham Manor is a charming and enchanting book that catapults you into the 18th Century. Written with style and grace to reflect that time period, you enter into Edwina Von Stetina's private journal that centers on the inherited estate left to her by her sea-faring Uncle Kat. Follow the adventures of Edwina as she discovers winged species of fantasy creatures known as Flittens ( Flittens dwell in places you would never dream of looking!) You will also meet the miniscule flying mice who delight in making whimsical sculptures out of sugar cubes, and who hide in the holes made in swiss cheese.

Be sure to have a cat to cuddle in your lap, and perhaps a young child nearby who can share in the giggles as you read this fanciful book out loud. This is a book that belongs in anyone's library, and one to cherish through the ages, for the imagination displayed in the writing and the illustrations within these pages is timeless and reaches the child within all of us!

5 out of 5 stars Mewingham Manor.......2002-11-19

This is the most charming book! The story is delightful and is something to enchant all ages from toddlers to grandparents.
The illustrations are clever and wonderful. I have read this book several times and each time have found something new and wonderous. The author is an exceptional story teller and a more than exceptional artist. I recommend this book totally. It is truly magic!

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective.......2004-10-30

This book guides you through few basic, simple and effective Taoist practices for transforming negative energy into positive; removing the the obstacles in your energy field. More advanced practice of transmutation of negative energy is covered in the book Fusion of the Five Elements, however before you'd work with that one, you'd have to learn Microcosmic Orbit first.

The first practice is called "inner smile". In essence this involves focusing upon the smiling, happy, energy and directing it to different parts of your body. As you relax your mind, emotions and body into this smiling energy, any stress and tension you may feel is bound to be released.

The next set of practices covered in this book are six healing sounds. In Taoist tradition, specific emotions are associated with different organs in your body and so are different sounds which help to clear any energetic obstacles in these organs. Sounds, and accompaning movements are designed to clear and balance the energy of the particular organ. Working with healing sounds also involves focusing upon the imagery (in the simplest form a color) associated with the particular organ.

Five healing sounds are associated with organs in the body - heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and spleen. Sixty healing sound is associated not with the organ, but with the triple warmed meridian. Working with this sixth sound will deeply relax you and if you suffer from insomnia, it may also help you to fall asleep.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all . . . ........2003-08-25

This is a wonderful introduction to traditional Chinese medicine. The reader need have no previous experience with the subject, only an open mind. The techniques the author outlines are simple and very clearly explained, yet they are extraordinarily powerful. He obviously has tremendous experience in the field, and yet he has no trouble conveying what is important in a very practical way. I would recommend this book for anyone who is suffering from stress and/or anyone who feels not "in synch" with their body.

3 out of 5 stars You must read Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao as well........2002-06-10

I have reviewed three books by Mantak Chia:

* Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao.
* Taoist Secrets of Love.
* Taoist Ways to Transform Stress into Vitality.

Only the first of these safely describes the central MICROCOSMIC ORBIT, stating that the energy must be collected at the navel after exercising. Read that book!

5 out of 5 stars It may sound strange, but it works.......2001-12-30

If you're not acquainted with Chinese techniques of meditation and soforth, this book may seem a bit odd - you'll read of things of moving energy into your Liver, the macrocosmic orbit, and healing sounds. However, there's a reason that Chinese traditions have survived so long - they work.

This is a wonderfully no-silliness, no-fluff, practacal guide to some Taoist meditations that I've found work quite well. They may seem strange to western eyes, but if you give them a chance, I think you'll be pleased with the results.

5 out of 5 stars great de-stressing book.......2000-06-03

This is a good book with some useful techniques for destressing, and increasing your vitality. I especially like the Smile Meditation, explained step by step. After you do it, you'll feel really light and peaceful. The six healing sound is also good practice. I use to frequently to expell heat from my heart during summer, and it works. This exercise will automatically make u take fuller breaths, there by increasing your vitality. Try one of those Taoist Energizing Breath and you'll immediately feel the difference in vitality and energy!

Like any field of collecting and enjoying antiques, there are numerous books on the market to wade through. The Arts and Crafts movement also gets blanket coverage by a deluge of 'style' books on home interiors, exteriors and so on. This book is a must have for all A&C enthusiasts in terms of providing a quick yet comprehensive look at the movement, collecting subgroups, the top makers, and the range of pieces and prices. The book does not however provide any in-depth coverage of the range of more affordable and more widely available pieces that most people will come across in their antique hunting. Rago is the expert on the high-end and this book is focussed as such. As a reference, it is one to own. I look forward to his newest book due summer '05.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2005-08-12

I disagree with the previous review. I think this book does a good job of explaining things that beginners need to know. I especially liked the introduction/history of needlework and the many color photographs included. The book discusses materials and equipment needed to start stitching and gives clear instructions with visual aids in how to do the various stitches. It also talks a bit about designing your own work, and finishes as well as caring for your work once it's completed. This is a good resource!

3 out of 5 stars Ok but not super.......2003-10-22

It's a mixed bag book. It's really not for beginners though ti shows lots of stitches and how to make them because it does not have attendant information
about making a project. I'd recommend instead as a beginner book Jo Verso's
book and once you've finished that you may be interested in some of Betty's techniques. If this is your first book you will be disappointed.

"Before it becomes a political, social, or even linguistic issue, bilingualism is a private affair, intimate theater." So writes Gustavo Pérez Firmat in this ground-breaking study of the interweaving of life and languages in a group of bilingual Spanish, Spanish-American and Latino writers. Unravelling the "tongue ties" of such diverse figures as the American philosopher George Santayana, the emigré Spanish poet Pedro Salinas, Spanish American novelists Guillermo Cabrera Infante and María Luisa Bombal, and Latino memoirists Richard Rodriguez and Sandra Cisneros, Pérez Firmat argues that their careers are shaped by a linguistic family romance that involves negotiating between the competing claims and attractions of Spanish and English.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource but a bit Trendy.......2006-08-04

This reference book is a good example of very good logos for your average graphic designer. After not looking at it after a few years, it looks rather dated with "computery" techniques with a few strong exceptional logos. If you are interested in good logo reference books, consider the "International Logos and Trademarks" books by the Supon Design Group.

5 out of 5 stars Simple - just tons of logos.......2000-11-30

If you're looking for interesting or educational content, or commentary, or "how-to" then this isn't your book. Beyond an introduction and appropriate credit for each image, you won't find anything but images.

Now, for what this book IS. It's chock-full of wonderful logo samples in full color. The logos span over a vast array of designs and styles. This is a great resource for study or to get ideas. I would highly recommend it as a great resource for graphic and logo designers.

From the scandalous murder trial of a French art dealer's widow to photographer-designer Cecil Beaton's peculiar "romance" with Greta Garbo, this sinfully entertaining book lets readers brush up on 20th-century cultural history and the vagaries of human nature at the same time. While we wait for volume III of John Richardson's acclaimed Life of Picasso, the 28 sketches assembled here make an agreeable diversion, revealing Richardson's lighter side and formidable knowledge of art history. Admiring portraits of Chilean collector Eugenia Errazuriz ("Picasso's Other Mother") and British painter Lucian Freud are among the very few laudatory pieces in a collection notable for its enjoyable emphasis on the less edifying traits of the rich and/or famous. The Sitwells were spiteful mythomaniacs. Armand Hammer was "a veteran con man." As for the sexual proclivities of Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala... well, Richardson gives you all the gory details, some of which would have impressed the Marquis de Sade. Richardson appears as a character in several pieces: he worked for Hammer, spent a summer with Truman Capote in Venice, and sat for a portrait by Andy Warhol. But these appearances seldom seem self-aggrandizing; they're integrated into the essays with the same smoothness that distinguishes his prose. --Wendy Smith

                          Book Description

Robert Hughes has described Richardson's multivolume biography of Picasso as "a masterpiece in the making." In this collection of his best shorter pieces, culled from more than thirty years' artistic and literary commentary and reviews, Richardson demonstrates the same dazzling narrative style that has earned him the reputation as one of our foremost biographers.

As a contributor to Vanity Fair, The New York Review of Books, House and Garden, and The New Yorker, John Richardson has a reputation for stimulating readers with his frank, discerning characterizations of art-world personalities as well as celebrities from a variety of other milieus-- people such as Truman Capote, Armand Hammer, Lucian Freud, Andy Warhol, and Peggy Guggenheim.

As readers await the third volume of A Life of Picasso, they will be diverted by this witty, wonderfully intelligent collection of approximately thirty essays, extensively revised and updated for this publication, each of which is illustrated with artwork or photographs.

                          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mr. Richardson Goes Duck Hunting.......2002-11-12

Having read the first two volumes of Mr. Richardson's "A Life Of Picasso," and having thoroughly enjoyed them, I went into this book with high expectations. Overall, I was disappointed. Granted, the book is a collection of some of the articles that Mr. Richardson has written for popular magazines over the past 30 years or so. The audience for, say, a "Vanity Fair" article is not the same as the audience for a scholarly journal. But Mr. Richardson acknowledges in the preface that he had hundreds of articles to choose from. He states that he made a conscious decision not to include his more academic essays. That is a shame. Because some of the material that is included, about such people as Lucien Freud and Brice Marden, for example, gives a tantalizing glimpse of what might have been. Here is Lucien Freud on why he chooses to paint nudes of, almost exclusively, close friends and relatives: "Aesthetic and biological truth-telling is what my painting is all about.....the fact that a model would never find himself or herself in this particular situation were it not at the painter's behest makes for vulnerability.....vulnerability would not be an issue if I used professional models. But I don't, because professional models have been stared at so much that they have grown another skin. When they take their clothes off, they are not naked; their skin has become another garment." I would like to have seen more keen insights into the artistic process, such as this one, and less of the following (this is from the essay on Salvador Dali and his wife Gala): "One of my responsibilities (as vice president of the firm that acted as Dali's dealer) was keeping the artist to the terms of his contract- a one-man show of new work, every two years. This was no easy task, given that his eye was so bleary and his hand so shaky that assistants had taken over most of his work. I could not help feeling sorry for the seedy old conjurer with his rhinoceros-horn wand, leopard-skin overcoat, and designer whiskers, not to speak of his surreal breath." For the most part, you can't see any reason to dredge these essays up and put them into book form. There is a lot of gossip, particularly about peoples' sex lives (The Dalis, Vita Sackville-West, Peggy Guggenheim, etc.) and there are several pieces where Mr. Richardson takes on subjects that are just too easy to ridicule, such as Dr. Barnes, The Sitwells and Armand Hammer. (Hence, the title of my review.) Since Mr. Richardson states that he and his assistants had to do a lot of work to update these essays, there is really no excuse for some of the blatant errors- such as writing (in the essay on the Merchant/Ivory movie "Surviving Picasso"- where Richardson is trying to make the point that moviemakers have done a poor job of portraying major artists) that Anthony Quinn played van Gogh. (He did not. In "Lust For Life" Kirk Douglas played van Gogh and Quinn played Paul Gauguin.) In another piece, the statement is made that the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize is made in Norway. That's wrong. It is made in Stockholm, Sweden. In the essay on Pablito Picasso, Pablo's grandson, Mr. Richardson writes that it took seven years to settle the Picasso estate. As Picasso died in 1973, this would bring us to 1980. But the essay informs us that the estate was divided up in 1990. This may seem as though I am nitpicking. But, remember, Mr. Richardson is working on the third volume of his Picasso biography. The first two volumes have been rightly hailed as a tremendous achievement. The cheap shots and silly errors contained in "Sacred Monsters, Sacred Masters" are beneath a scholar of Mr. Richardson's ability. I still give this book three-stars, as even though the collection is uneven, there are several good essays. Besides the pieces on Lucien Freud and Brice Marden, which I mentioned earlier, there are thoughtful articles on Klee, Miro and Braque, for example. On the whole, however, one gets the impression that Mr. Richardson's publisher wanted something from him while they were waiting for the third volume of "A Life Of Picasso." There's nothing wrong with that. It's just that a little more care should have been taken in deciding what that something was going to be.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of essays on artists, writers and tycoons.......2002-04-10

Sacred Monsters, Sacred Masters provides a mix of essays on artists, writers and tycoons, each illustrated with a photo or piece of art and selected by the author because they are about special people he's known. While non-artists are included, this is reviewed here for its focus on many of the fine artists Richardson has encountered, from Dali and Warhol to Marden and Picasso. Sacred Monsters, Sacred Masters is an intriguing collection of images and insights.
