Jessica is teaching a semester course on writing mysteries at a small college in Indiana. Jessica is caught off guard when a tornado hits the college and almost doesn't make it to shelter in time. While many buildings have extensive damage, there are very few injuries. Until they discover the head of the English department dead in the rubble.
Everyone believes the storm killed him, but Jessica feels there is more to the story. She attempts to look into things but the police are determined it was natural causes and throw up roadblocks to stop her. She pushes so hard she ends up in jail. Thankfully the judge is a fan, and she doesn't have to stay long.
Jessica and a student who helps her retrieve the murder weapon from the rubble. Knowing the way the police feel about the death, she gets the Cabot Cove police department to help get the weapon to the lab.
Jessica presses on to uncover the truth. In the meantime she uncovers another mystery and solves it too.
I love this series and really enjoyed this one. The college setting really lent itself to this story. I normally don't like when Jessica is traveling as I miss the hometown characters. This time they make small appearances via phone and help with the investigation in small ways so that I didn't feel they were left out.
I highly recommend this book.

Pecos Jessica Rides a Tornado.......2005-05-19
Jessica Fletcher, the famous mystery writer has agreed to spend a semester teaching a course about mystery writing at Schoolman College, a small Liberal Arts college in Indiana. Being from Maine, Jessica is not used to dealing with tornadoes and when one hits the campus she is almost caught out in it. Luckily for her, a man named Frank gets her to the shelter just in time and she sits there waiting out the storm with everyone else. There is extensive damage to several campus buildings but only a few injuries and everything seems to be under control until the body of the head of the English Department is found buried under some rubble.
At first everyone naturally assumes that it was the storm that killed the professor but something tells Jessica that there is more to this story than meets the eye. As is her custom, Jessica begins to snoop around but the college administration and the local police are determined not to acknowledge the possibility that this might be a murder and they work to thwart Jessica at every turn. The local police lieutenant even goes so far as to pressure the coroner into ignoring some suspicious findings during the autopsy. Jessica, who is used to getting her way, finally pushes the police too far and ends up in jail. Not for long though since the judge turns out to be a fan of hers. With a little help from a student who happens to be just as nosy as her, Jessica finds and retrieves the murder weapon but has to rely on the efforts of her police friends back in Cabot Cove to get it to a lab.
As evidence mounts, Jessica digs all the harder and finally, as is usual she solves the mystery, but not before uncovering another mystery which she solves in short order. The biggest problem with this book, and all of the books in this series that I have read, is that some of the evidence is withheld from the reader until the very end. Jessica of course has the evidence and with it she solves the mystery, but the reader is left trying to put together a puzzle with some of the pieces missing. There is also the problem of the missing Frank who is a major character in the early chapters but just disappears in the middle of the book never to return.
Despite the missing evidence, which is very frustrating, this was a good quality book. The college atmosphere and Jessica's lectures to her class were very enjoyable. It was kind of like taking a short seminar in mystery writing when the story turned to the classroom. Most of the characters were believable and interesting but I must admit that I missed the people back in Cabot Cove. Thankfully Mort and Seth made short appearances by phone so that neither Jessica nor I became too homesick. She does however turn down an offer to stay for another semester because she has decided that it is time to go home. I couldn't agree more.

This MSW book was very good. When a profesor is found dead after a tornado, every-one jumps to the conclusion that it was an accidental death. But Jessica smells something foul, and soon starts her own investigation, and gets on thin ice with the local police. A great read!
Almost 4 Stars.......2003-09-16
I really enjoyed the last entry in this mystery series but this one fell a little flat. I noticed that, similar to the earlier books, there were some phrases repeated a few times that makes it a little repetitive. However, the mystery itself is interesting and, having lived in Indiana for a few years, I found it nice to recognize some placenames, etc.
In this entry, Jessica is a visiting professor at a small private university in Indiana. While there, a tornado strikes and leaves a professor dead; but was he truly killed by the tornado, or, as Jessica suspects, was there foul play involved? The mystery is wrapped up nicely and I found myself staying up late one evening to finish it. Looking forward to the next entry.
Of Green Acres and Munchkins - not.......2003-05-21
This cozy continuation of Cabot Cove capers is a comfortable visit with old friends. The "Murder, She Wrote" book series is "based on the Universal television series" ostensibly written in the 1st person by Jessica Fletcher, with a little help from Donald Bain.
Jessica has to get out of Cabot Cove sometimes, lest the population be decimated by the need to kill off at least one of their number in every episode ;-) and so this time, she is teaching mystery writing at Schoolman College in bucolic Indiana. Or maybe this is more heavily on the Gothic side of American Gothic than bucolic - well, actually, Grant Wood's American Gothic is a dentist and his niece in Iowa - but anyway - here is our old friend Jessica amidst the cornfields of Indiana when along comes a tornado. No, Toto is not here - and there are no Munchkins to be found - just scheming academics and students trying to get an education amidst the tempests.
After the tornado, (who would have guessed?) there are dead bodies, who may or may not have perished due to natural disaster. And Jessica's on the case, with a little help from her friends back in Cabot Cove - to the chagrin of some of the collegiates, who are decidedly lacking in collegiality. Along the path to "Who or What Dunnit" enlightenment, our authors gently chide the current condition of academia.

When this life transition smacks you in the face, you want to read anything you can about this occurance. While this was not the best book I found, it was very helpful. Certainly worth buying used.
OK, but where's the beef?.......2001-11-03
Filled with stories of patients, fan mail from readers, and self-serving descriptions of dialogs with women. The text is poorly organized so it is difficult to find and research specific symptoms.
The answer to most symptoms, such as insomnia, are herbal remedies which may or may not work, depending on the woman. There is a discussion of hrt, but you can learn more reading the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal, or some other woman's magazine.
The book was disappointing on several levels, but if you like to commiserate with other women (and their spouses) going thru this life cycle - and who doesn't? - then this book may make you feel better.

THANK YOU Ms. Bender! This was like reading the last 10 years of my life....There is so much help in this 1 incredible book, I hardly know what to praise. It's very balanced giving information all many aspects of perimenopause & ways to treat it. She really stresses, that it's natural & not everyone's is the same. So there is some trial & error in finding what works for "YOU", "no 1 pill & it's all gone." But she explains the WHY, & gives very good starting points to explore making it through what can be a very rough time, easier. I found myself cheered & looking forward to finding better ways for my own dealing with these changes. Some things as simple as WALK more... personally my dog will love it!
A Clear and Balanced View.......2000-04-17
I have done a great deal of research into perimenopause and this book is the most clearly written and informative book I have found. It nicely balances the most up-to-date traditional medical ideas with a realistic view of nutritional, natural and alternative possiblities. I learned more about hormone cycles, perimenopause symptoms, recommended tests and treatment alternatives from this book than any other source. If you even think that you may be going through the preliminary stages of menopause and want to understand what is happening to your body, buy this book.

I haven't knitted much out of this book yet but what I have knitted has been very successful. My whole family wants a pair of those half gloves now that I've made myself a pair. Not exactly revolutionary designs and some of them are just too froo-froo for teens but the good designs are excellent. I'll be using this book for years to come.

I just returned from a three-week trip to Botswana and plan to write a book that takes place there. I ordered this book because (a) I saw how good it was while I was there, and (b) mainly because it's what my native guide used in Botswana. I can't imagine a much better endorsement than that.

If you want to know things like how the lives of a dikdik & a duiker differ (but you could tell them apart), this is the book for you!

While on a college course in northern Tanzania, I had the great honour of having Dr. Estes as my professor. The book speaks of over 2 decades of knowledge, it is a must have for the travler or researcher. Not only good as a field type guide but wonderfuly done and useful for all topics on african wildlife. Amazing!.......2007-09-26
I have very high standards when it comes to idols (at least by my warped definition). Mrs. Lynn managed to be both an idol and hero to me. She is a strong out spoken female that refuses to compromise her beliefs to fit into a cookie cutter/hollywood type image. The best day of my life was getting to visit her ranch and pose for a photo on her steps. I love both of her books although Still Woman Enough is my favorite as she is completely relaxed in being herself. Loretta Lynn is an inspritation for all women young and old that have had to overcome hard challenges in life.

A grandmother at 28? Wow! I learned a lot of interesting things about 1) the country music star, and 2) about coming up hard and making it work out.
This book is Loretta Lynn's tale of her childhood in Butcher Holler with her poor but pround parents. Her parents allow her to be married off to a man she barely knows when she is 13. Amazingly, she remains married to this man for the rest of his life.
Anyway, the husband encourages Loretta to sing publicly because he thinks she has a great voice. And I don't need to tell you how the career goes, because that's pretty popular knowledge.
All in all, this was a great book. Very well developed and informative, whether you're a country music fan or not.

I have been completely in love with Loretta Lynn ever since I saw "Coal Miner's Daughter." I didn't even know who she was til I watched the movie at age 14, then I read the book and became hooked on her music. She is an amazing woman. Her life has been hard, and she doesn't take any of her success for granted. She is who she is. What you see is what you get with her. I don't know if anyone who reads her book could relate to half of what she has experienced, but it makes for interesting reading. I was lucky enough to see her live in concert a month ago, and when she walked out on that stage, I was brought literally to tears. I just couldn't believe this woman I admire so highly was actually standing in front of me. I'll never forget that night. And I will never stop loving Loretta Lynn. Read BOTH of her autobiographies. Both are excellent.

This is one of the greatest books that has ever been written. My father was a coal miner until he got hurt. I sing my self and loretta is just so good. Being from the same state she is i guess the reason she has such a influenece on my life. If you read this book you will love it.

I enjoyed the book, after having read it yrs ago. I saw the movie and then bought the book again and enjoyed it. Love Loretta.
