Customer Reviews:
nothing beautiful about it.......2007-04-03
I had such high hopes for this book - nominated for all those prizes! If you're looking for gay fiction then this book is for you. It should be sold with the porn magazines - the first 100 pages ramble on and on about gay sex - but never get to a storyline. I tried to endure. I kept hoping there was a story! I grew up in Britain and thought this sounded like a great perspective on the Iron Lady (Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher) and 80's Britain. But it's just about a guy trying to fit in with a bunch of snobbish upper class twits! Oh yes, and there's lots of gay sex.
disappointing, weak plot, good background.......2007-03-22
I was disappointed with "The Line of Beauty", perhaps because all the praise and prizes made me think of it as of a truly exceptional novel. Well, it isn't exceptional and, in fact, the plot is very weak.
The novel is set mainly in London, with a little excursion to France. The time frame is 1983 to 1987. The main protagonist, Nick Guest, is a gay Oxford graduate, writing a dissertation on Henry James, who lives as a house guest with the family of his college friend, Toby Fedden. The Feddens are portraited as the upper-class, conservative family, with Toby's father, Gerald, being a Member of Parliament, the mother, Rachel, coming from old money, and the sister, Catherine, suffering from (imaginative?) bipolar disorder.
The depiction of the 80s in London is very interesting and probably accurate, with many sharp insights into the political and social situation of Great Britain. There is a fair amount of humor and the silhouettes of the characters are painted satirically, but this is just about as much as there is to it. The book reads like a gigantic, blown-up background sketch, and while it is true that it can be a good read for the people who are interested in that period (with great comparisons between social classes, examples being the Feddens, Nick family, and Leo's family), there is no real plot. Nothing, except parties and various social or political events, which drag on and on, happens until about 100 pages before the end, and even then it is not much and only what is to be expected. If anyone is interested in the drama of AIDS in the 80s, I would rather recommend "Angels in America".
Nick is a weak, pathetic main character, he is not likeable, rather despicable - he has a lot of potential, is intelligent, imaginative and sensitive, but he tries to achieve his aspirations by being, essentially, a parasite, and this has nothing to do with his being conscious of his sexual orientation, he is just this type of person, gay or not, he would be the same, and while the attitude of the Fedden family and surroundings to homosexualism is hypocritical (vide Gerald and Penny as opposed to Nick and Wani), and I was all the time wondering what else could he expect and why he is not independent - for years staying with people, basically on their charity. All this immediately (even without his Jamesian research) brings to mind the socialites out of Henry James's novels, but the effect is incomparable. The whole novel is summarized very well when Nick and Wani meet the potential producers of their movie, who criticize Nick's script - the remarks are very relevant to the whole of this novel.
I liked several characters - Catherine with her sharp tongue, observant eye and unexpected reactions, Penny (her last discussion with Nick is very good), Leo's family, and several minor personas who are rather funny, but I could not wait for the book to end and I wish I'd rather read something else instead.
Britain's most literary gay author.......2007-03-15
Others have written well of this book. I simply wanted to add that I think Hollinghurst in general fills a niche in the gay fiction genre, in that he is first and foremost a richly talented writer with acute observational skills, and intensely intimate introspective capabilities (forgive the alliteration). That said his writing is also hot. He unabashedly explores the sexual lives of his characters, which makes him exquisitely modern and insouciant. Straight women friends of mine have enjoyed his work as much as my gay male friends precisely for this quality. Seldom does an avid reader come away from a novel with such a sense of satisfaction and intellectual fulfillment. Alan if you read this - we are all waiting for more.
Slight.......2007-03-07
I didn't buy my copy off amazon but at the Pan bookshop in the Fulham road where I got an autographed first edition. It'll have good re-sale value. That's the best I can say about it. Alan Hollinghurst has already proven that he can write, but I was expecting something with alot more depth to it than this. Especially as the Booker judges had rewarded him for it. If you think the BBC adaptation was just giving you a taste of what you'll find in the novel, then you'll be disappointed as there is not much more to the book than was put on screen.
Nick Guest, the novel's central protagonist, moves to London to work at UCL and accepts accomodation from the family of his friend Toby Fedden. Despite Nick and Toby being such good friends Nick has never been to Toby's family home before the novel starts. Nick has a brief relationship with Leo Charles. Leo Charles introduces Nick to a friend of his,Pete, who owned an antique shop and this plot strand ends abruptly as though it was a half thought out idea. I was hoping Leo's family and friends would be drawn more vividly to get us out of the claustrophobia and boredome of the Fedden family home. There's the crux of it. The characters , and what they do here are very boring. It's very dull.
There is a narrowness to the London that Alan depicts. Here he rarely leaves the Fedden's place in Notting Hill, and the variety and changing social status of that area during the period is not described. I know from reading 'The Swimming Pool Library's innacurate description of walking from Mile End to St.Anne's Limehouse that Mr.Hollinghurst's knowledge of London is sketchy at best (he'd get lost east of the City without a guide, and he probably doesn't realise that south of the river is inhabited) but it is irksome to read a novel set in a city you know well and finding it so poorly represented. You need to get out more, Alan. Try again.
Fine for the price.......2007-01-20
I would have given 5*'s if it were a 1st run copy but I knew that from the price. Paid extra for expedited shipping and it arrived as promised in 2 days.

Marcus Didius Falco is back in another lively first-century historical mystery. The Roman investigator, informer, and imperial spy's snappy patter, romantic leanings, strong sense of irony, and penchant for getting into interesting situations have won Lindsey Davis a growing number of fans. Flush with his earnings from an African adventure (Two for the Lions), Falco's just been rewarded for his service to the empire with an unusual bit of political patronage: he's been appointed to the largely ceremonial position of Procurator of the Sacred Poultry, meaning he's in charge of the care and feeding of a gaggle of sacred geese. This un-Falco-like upward mobility is an opportunity for Marcus to move his patrician wife, Helena Justina, and their toddler out of a tenement and into a home of their own. As much as Marcus scoffs at middle-class pretensions, he's not above leaving his seedy surroundings and providing his family with some of the finer things, if only to show his in-laws that he can. But when Helena's brother falls over a corpse that disappears before it can be identified, Falco tosses the geese some food and gets busy finding the connection between the dead man and a 6-year-old girl who's in line to be chosen as the new vestal virgin. That leads him into intrigue, danger, and a confrontation with a former vestal virgin that almost costs him his life. Well paced, with good dialogue, excellent plotting, and a cast of terrific characters surrounding Falco and Helena, including some familiar from earlier stories, One Virgin Too Many shows Davis in top form. Falco the family man is better company than ever. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Marcus Didius Falco, the cynical, hard-boiled investigator from the rough end of Rome, is back from a difficult mission in North Africa. As a result of his hard work, Emperor Vespasian awards Falco with the title of Procurator of Poultry for the Senate and People of Rome, or keeper of the city's sacred geese. Not much of a salary, of course, but the title does give him a better standing with his in-laws. Now, all Falco wants is to spend time relaxing at home with his family. But there is no rest for Falco as he finds himself drawn into the world of the Roman religious cults...and the murder of a member of the Sacred Brotherhoods. And then there's the disappearance of the most likely new candidate for the Order of Vestal Virgins. Falco soon uncovers a sinister cover-up-and is too deeply involved to back away from the truth.

Marcus Didius Falco is a cynical, hard-boiled investigator from the rough end of Rome. He does a bit of everything, from political investigating to art-fraud work. But he never seems to make enough money to move his family out of a seedy tenement. But fresh from his adventure in Two for the Lions in North Africa, he finds new respectability. His efforts are rewarded when he is appointed to a post in the religious hierarchy of government cults and becomes keeper of the city's sacred geese. Now Falco wants nothing more than to spend time relaxing at home. But all too soon he finds himself caught up in the murder of a member of one of the sacred brotherhoods and the disappearance of the most likely new candidate for the Order of Vestal Virgins. Lindsey Davis's look at the complexities of Roman society and attitudes has rarely been so impressively on display as in this engrossing historical mystery.
Customer Reviews:
a pleasure!.......2007-08-03
I had a fun time reading "One Virgin Too Many". As with all Falco mysteries, the humor and affection for the characters is delightful and the history lesson goes down like candy. I was glad to see Marcus FINALLY got his promotion to the Equestrian rank. His accompanying appointment as Keeper of the Sacred Poultry is pretty funny! The linked mysteries of a missing child (the top vestal virgin candidate) and a murdered member of a religious order is interesting and inventive. Such likeable characters! It makes reading the story a pleasure even when the action isn't advancing all that quickly.
Someone's Goose is Cooked.......2006-10-03
This is the eleventh novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth in Rome at the time of Vespasian. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in the Roman world of circa AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.
In this novel Falco becomes embroiled with the religious cults of his beloved Rome after he is approached by a young girl, who claims that someone is trying to kill her. The girl has been proposed as a Vestal Virgin, a highly sought after position, although most of the city believe that the voting is fixed and that another girl will win. Falco and Helena are having dinner a few days later with helea's parents, when Camillus Aelianus returns home shaken to the core at discovering a man's dead body in a Sacred Grove.
Falco has to put his detective's hat on once again, but somewhat reluctantly after all he has recently been given the singular honour of Procurator of the Sacred Geese and he is finding out that the ones with feathers on that strut about and make that stupid noise are not half as attractive as those that haven't and don't . . .
Falco Falters.......2004-11-13
This is a fine series so when I began this volume I had hopes that it would be of the same standard as the others. Ms. Haney has a genuine gift in giving readers the "texture" of everyday life in imperial Rome (at the time of Vespasian and Titus in this one). The dialogue and the characters are both engaging. So what went wrong? A young girl appears to speak with Falco believing someone in her family wants to kill her. And away we go, on and on and on! I was weary by the time I got to the rather flat conclusion and felt that a good editing would have been most helpful; the length of this book (326 pages) really cannot support so thin a story. I was left wondering what had happened and if somehow I had missed something as there was so little going on.
Another Great Story.......2003-05-21
If you have not read any of the Falco series, I strongly recommend that you do so, but start at the beginning. Lindsey Davis gets better with each outing. Her characterization is wonderful, and she peoples her books with lots of eccentric and wonderful people. If you read the series in order, you will get to know them all, plus be able to understand the undercurrants that run between Falco and the many people that are close to him. In this book we see Falco on the search for a missing child. His search exposes him to a very disfunctional family. No wonder the little girl was missing! Her grandfather and all her relations are the worst lot you'll ever meet. The search for the child becomes a race against time, and the last few chapters are "edge-of-your seat". All the while the quips and jokes just seem to flow from the pages. Falco finds himself in a very dangerous and embarrassing position where the lack of wearing a loin cloth under his tunic becomes of paramount importance. This is a wonderful, fast-moving book. Through all the turmoil and danger, Falco finds out that he has a number of people that are very loyal to him and this comes as a pleasant surprise to him, since two of his partners were people he didn't like or didn't trust, and the other - his friend Petronious - had been distant of late. Wonderful Book!
One of the best and hard to put down.......2003-04-13
A great read and one that really holds together and comes to a terrific, well-crafted finale. Up there with Silver Pigs and The Iron Hand of Mars. Maybe the best one where Falco stays in Rome (although I also enjoyed Poseidon's Gold a lot.) Great fun. Keep 'em coming!

A FEW ALTERATIONS
Throckmorton P. Ruddygore, master wizard, had troubles--again!
Ruddygore had defeated the Dark Baron and exiled him from the magical realm of Husaquahr to Earth. But he hadn't counted on the Baron's using an earthly computer to create even more effective spells.
Of course, the Baron couldn't use those spells. But the forces of Hell soon sent him a second-rank wizard who could--and together they worked a scam so that Ruddygore couldn't cross the Sea of Dreams to deal with the Baron directly. Now the Baron was developing a scheme that would surely result in Armageddon before its time.
Once again Marge the fairy and Joe the barbarian were called upon to do the dirty work. They had to return to their home world and stop the Baron--if they could . . .
And that would be only the beginning of their assignment!

Great, fast reading, odd concepts.......2003-09-26
This is a GREAT series from "The River of the Dancing Gods" to "Demons of the Dancing Gods" to "Vengance of the Dancing Gods". If you read those three and like them a lot, just go back to "River of the Dancing Gods", do not pass GO, do not buy "Songs of the Dancing Gods" (the fantasy fades into more drama than you want with a series like this), just go back to "River of the Dancing Gods" and read the trilogy again. I love thse books and recommend them to everyone I know. JACK, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, I HART THOSE BOOKS SOOOO MUCH.
-------- this much -------.
The Smoothest Fantasy Series I've ever read!.......1999-06-17
Litterally...smooth. There's nothing complicated about this series. This is one of those types that you just sit down and say "I really could care less." and start reading. It isn't deep. These were the two major emotions it set off in me: that feeling when you were an adventurous kid, wanting to run down a hill with a big sword to clobber some big mean monster so you could save the most beautiful girl (who you knew would want you in return), and WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD POSSIBLY COME NEXT. Don't try to outthink it, even though you might be able to. Don't go into it with expectations, they probably won't be met. Just read it with a smile and you won't be let down!
Customer Reviews:
Great book - a must read for anyone thinking about reduction........2007-04-26
Overall, this is a very good book to read when you're trying to make the decision. Honestly, there's not much out there (at least from what I could find), so it really felt great to get my hands on such a comprehensive source.
I read so much and talked to so many people online that I thought I'd go crazy trying to make the decision - you can't tell which end is up when you get overloaded. So, this book was very helpful in my journey to make my decision. I, personally, ended up not going through with the surgery, but I learned a ton through the process of thinking about it.
Good wishes to all of you ladies out there wrangling with this decision.
BEST RESOURCE ON THIS TOPIC.......2007-04-05
The material in this book is so organized and straightforward that its deceptively simple..yet Dr. Snodgrass' book has a ton of useful information ... after surgery I was full of questions.. after pillaging my HMO library, searching the internet and reading books by several plastic surgeons.. I discovered this book... I pored over it..the best resource yet... I wish I had had it in my hands from the onset.. I would recommend it to anyone considering or undergoing this particular surgery... MOST INTERESTING AND HELPFUL...
This Book Is a God-Send!!.......2007-02-27
I'm so grateful for Dr. Snodgrass writing this book. This is the only book that I have been able to find that solely deals with breast reduction. Most books I have read, concentrate more on breast lifts and implants.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering breast reduction surgery. I now know what to expect at every phase of this endeavor, from my initial consulation, to my follow-up appointment after surgery.
I even have some insight into why my last claim may have been denied
(but I have a new insurance carrier, and I know for a fact that they do allow for breast reductions for medical reasons, as about 6 of my co-workers have been approved over the years).
Get this book, and be informed, because a informed patient is a happy patient!
Fabulous Book If You are Considering a Breast Reduction........2007-01-16
This book will answer all of your questions, and suggest ways to find a plastic surgeon and what questions to ask of him/her. The people at [...], a website for all different types of plastic surgery procedures and antiaging, highly recommend it!
Excellent Resource!!!.......2006-09-29
This book walks you through the entire process from initial consult, what to expect, and insurance appeals.
Insurance originally denied my request, and thanks to this book I was able to write an informed appeal. I believe it was the key to my successful appeal. I've had my reduction surgery and feel great! Thank you Bethanne Snodgrass!

Afternoon Delights James McNair.......2005-09-21
Recipes can be found in so many books. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was a bit disappointed for a James McNair book.
Bravo! The book to buy!.......2003-08-21
The recipes in this book are easy to understand and carry through. The cookies are big, delicious, and a joy to make. Awesome book!
Just the recipes I wanted!.......2002-09-19
I saw James and Andrew teach at Sur la Table last fall and I thought their recipes were delicious! I remain particularly smitten by the old-fashioned brownies (with frosting!) and the gingersnaps. There are several other typical cafe recipes in here--biscotti, some tasty scones, more cookies. There aren't a ton of recipes, but every one of them is for something you already know you love--no weirdos. The book is beautiful and the recipes work--what more could you ask for? Maybe someone to make the coffee.

A treasure of insightful information.......2007-04-20
A fascinating little book. Insightful to a time when much of a family's cloths were not purchased in the store but made by the lady of the house on her sewing machine or in some cases sewn by hand.
American Dress Pattern Catalog.......2001-03-14
Very interesting, fun to look out book. I enjoyed finding out about the pricing and incentives used to entice buyers. The pictures are wonderful. The reprint of the magazine article is entertaining. It was interesting to see the evolution of comfort in women's clothing.
Customer Reviews:
Gives exactly what it says it gives.......2006-06-29
This book has good, easy-to-follow plans for creating practical, relatively inexpensive, and durable furniture. It's not BEAUTIFUL furniture, unless you really enjoy the pipe asthetic, but it is well written, and practical.
The instructions are clear, the illustrations are well done, the directions are not confusing. However, the furniture is ugly.
If you want practical outdoor patio furniture that can survive seven or eight children growing up, and move on to THEIR patios, in all their inbreakable, indestructable-but slightly ugly- glory, this is the book for you.

The Secret World of Drawing, by Furth.......2006-11-10
This was a great book for beginners in art therapy. It explained the basics and was easy to read. One has a good explanation of what to look at and how to identify what the artist is saying through his/her art. This book gets a big "OK" from me.
A book that really heped me understand my child.......2004-09-03

One of the best books I have ever read!
a woman who runs with the wolves.......2003-07-23
An excellent, well written, concise, comprehensive and clear introduction for professionals and lay people as well, curious about and interested in understanding drawings. Actually, the best book I have read in the field. I especially appreciate, that it offers GUIDELINES in interpretating pictures, without presuming to have/posess a set of rigid assumptions about the exact meaning of any of the components (size, color, figure, motion etc.). It is a book, which, however, must be read several times, most of all because of the amount of information it containes. It is an absolute MUST, for everbody, fascinated about and deligthed in deciphering the (mostly) hidden world of our uncounscius Psyche!!!!

"Lefty Taught Us All How To Sing".......2002-06-13
Cooper presents the life of Lefty with little untold. Lefty was all too human and, one suspects, more a victim of his life and times than an instigator. His music was his creation and his escape. No other country singer influenced following generations as did Lefty. Alabama said it best in one single line of a song, "...and Lefty taught us all how to sing." Owning his Bear Family boxed set covers his music (and the only boxed set a country fan really needs), and Cooper's book gets you behind the music. Too many present-day artists have copied Lefty to a tee and fail to acknowledge Lefty as they should. Where is Randy Travis' tribute CD to Lefty? Today's country music is but a footnote to Lefty's career. Cooper tells it well.
Story of a great singer who lacked good managers.......2002-06-06
I didn't know much about Lefty (other than his music) until I read this book. What a sad waste of a wonderful talent. The book certainly shows the importance of management and public relations for an entertainer. This is a good biography. What I thought it lacked was mention of Lefty's siblings. That made for an incomplete family picture.
Not what I expected.......1999-09-29
I am a Lefty fan; however, this book bored me to death. It was very slow-moving and not well-written, in terms of being interesting. Unimportant things were dwelt-on. I knew most of what was in this book before I even started reading it.
