The year 1988 commenmorated the fourth generation since the Meiji Restoration of 1868 defined Japan's position-political, economic, and cultural-in the modern world. This period of history, which witnessed the rise, defeat, and rebirth of contemporary Japan, has been widely written about. Nevertheless, there remains, in the realm of architecture, an intractable gap in our knowledge of this span of more than a century. It is precisely that breach which Making of a Modern Japanese Architecture(with its more than 400 illustrations) undertakes to repair. It brilliantly charts the course of the art of building in this very old and yet, in a sense, quite new country from the middle of the mineteenth century to the onset of the 1980s. The book successfully sets before the reader, and illustrates in striking manner, the sea change that Japan's architecture underwent as feudal customs and an intense preoccupation with beauty encountered industrialization and modern lifetstyles. By what means, then, was the switch-over made from homes of paper and wood to efficient urban complexes of earthquakeproof reinforced concrete? The answer, during the Meiji era, was gaslighting and brick, followed in the second and third decades of the new century by an interval of Art Deco and jazz-age freneticism. On account of his controversial rebuilding of the great Imperial Hotel, the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was a participant in these years of so-called Taisho Democracy. Wright was more often than not present in the Japanese capital during this phase of his career, which he lived to the hilt by pursuing his instincts as a connoisseur and an aesthete of the first order. When he was, eventually, dismissed, his versatile assistant, the Czech modernist Antonin Raymond, stepped into the vanguard of Japanese architecture, a position which in many respects he retained well into the 1950s.

What evil lurks in the hearts of men? Hideshi Hino knows, and it seems this evil has leaked from his heart to his brain and fingertips, as this first English release by Dark Horse is dripping with the hideous heebie-jeebies. Where Scary Book is a bit more fun, Lullabies from Hell feels like getting strapped into a Disneyland ride where every cute animatronic robot is spurting blood out its eyes and is trying to kill you. The ride ends when the rickety cart carrying you spills into a gaping hole to Hell.

If Hideshi Hino wasn't a successful horror manga writer, he surely would be a successful mental institution patient. His imagery is uniquely cute and creepy at the same time. Many of the realities he creates feel like a parallel world, just on the other side of this one (like in the story "Train of Terror"), but very dark and very wicked.

The opening story, "Lullaby from Hell" is the real test of whether or not you are ready to enter Hino's heinous world. In this story a horror manga writer (Hino himself?) tells his sad life story. As can be expected, as a poor young lad, the writer gets little love and support from his delirious mother and his violent father. What he receives is mostly abuse and punches. As the writer gets older he finds he isn't as well-adjusted as he initially thought, but he has something better than a stable disposition... The ending of Lullaby from Hell comes from out of nowhere, and will take any and all readers by surprise.

The remaining three stories are also extreme tales of horror. Hino understands the limitless nature of the manga genre, and in takes advantage of this in the oddly green-themed tale "Unusual Fetus - My Baby". What starts as a traditional told-around-the-campfire tale turns into a frantic story of survival in "Train of Terror". The regrettable and repulsive tale "Zoroku's Strange Disease" tugs at your heart-strings while sticking a finger down your throat.

Lullabies from Hell is definitely not for everyone (especially younger readers), and if you are not familiar with J-horror, it might be a little much as a jumping-off point, (The Scary Book series might be a better introduction). But for those who like to laugh at children when they fall down and car accidents, Lullabies from Hell will be a perfect macabre match.

MORE TALES OF THE BIZARRE FROM HINO.......2006-06-06

Japanese Horror Manga master Hideshi Hino is back with a new collection of terrifyinig tales in "Lullabies from Hell" from Dark Horse Books. Hino provides four gruesome stories including the title story, "A lullaby from Hell" which is an exaggerated (we hope!) autobiography of growing up as the weird little kid who had a mother who sang rather grotesque lullabies. When picked on by other kids, Hideshi soon realizes that he can make them die by whatever means he wishes, just by thinking it, and so not only takes care of the bullies, but his brother, father, Manga editor...and, he says the readers for reading this story!

Next comes "Unsual Fetus--my Baby" in which a woman gives birth to a reptilian baby and raises it as her own. This is just the first of a worldwide phenomena where women give birth to animals due to ecological disasters. The end result is the doom of the human races since women are no longer giving birth to normal babies.

"Train of Terror" finds a boy named Shuichi traveling on a train. When the train goes through a tunnel though, strange things start to happen. He pictures the other passengers with horrific, dark visages, and sees a mysterious dark cloaked man. He thinks he's safe at home until he sees his parents burying a body in the yard...and then coming after him. Poor Shuichi finds himself on the run from the entire world it seems in this nightmarish story.

Finally, the bizarre "Zorokus Strange Disease" ends the book. A mentally handicapped man, covered with nasty, foul boils, is sent away by his family to live in a hut in the woods so his disease does not affect the rest of the village. This is a drippy, gooey, repugnant tale...I loved it!

Hino's skewed, somewhat psychedelic art style is perfectly suited to the horrific, odd stories he writes. Another winner from the man who brought fans Hino Horror.

Evaluation of social programs is now performed with greater frequency and with more methodological rigor than ever before. Yet it is not clear that the programs' effectiveness has improved because of this, or even that evaluation results have a rationalizing effect on policymaking. The author of this volume--which is based on a study of evaluation of U.S. employment and training policy from the passage of the Manpower Development and Training Act of 1963 to the welfare reforms of the 1980s and 1990s--argues that the increasing use of social scientific evaluations nonetheless has profound political consequences. Rather than influencing the programs themselves, evaluation research shapes the political discourse surrounding these programs, setting the terms in which the policy is known and discussed, and establishing conditions for entry into the debate. This study shows that even the most technical features of evaluation methodology are objects of a politics of knowledge and are by no means neutral with regard to the politics of the policies themselves. By applying ideas from the sociology of science to the area of applied social science, this work yields new insights that will be of interest to both of these areas. For the sociology of science, it demonstrates the value of this approach beyond the study of the natural sciences. For policy studies, it stimulates reflection on the political implications of methods normally assumed to be politically neutral. The conclusions about the political significance of evaluation research will also be of interest to political sociologists, who will find a novel way of looking at the role of social science in the formation of social policy.

Easy read. A must for military history buffs.......2003-05-31

The Eighth Air Force is a milestone to development of air power. Here are the details on how the Mighty Eighth became the unrelenting force against Nazi Germany. Mistakes were made. But the leaders of the eighth learned from them and overcame the obstacles. Here in the War Manual is how it was done.

Details are many. Historians, roleplayers and reenactors can read about the planning before a mission. You can read about the tactics used by 8th AF bombers in 1942, then later in 43, 44 and 1945. How they evolved from a lose squadron formation to 1,000 bomber combat boxes escorted by 700 to 800 fighters. Diagrams are included. Even the Summer 1944 radio callsigns for 8th AF Squadrons are listed.

The Equipment list is staggering! Not only familar aircraft such as the B-17, B-24, and the P-51 are listed, but also comparatively unfamiliar types in US inventory like the Lysander and the Lockheed Hudson. Gunsights, bombsights, radars, radios, flight suits, machine guns. It's all here!!

In arguing that the early Stuarts maintained a consistent yet uncomplicated policy of encouraging cooperation among their subjects, this work offers a new perspective on the role of multiple monarchy in the early modern British kingdoms. It has been generally accepted that James VI (James I of Britain) abandoned most efforts aimed at British unity following the failed Anglo-Scottish union negotiations of 1604-1607. This study asserts that James' desire for British unity and inter-kingdom cooperation should not be assessed within the context of that aborted political effort but, instead, should be analyzed as a long-term project. Union designs predated his ascension to the English throne by some twenty years and continued up to his death in 1625. James was mindful of the possibilities for cooperation which were inherent in inter-kingdom defense policies, trade practices, colonial projects, and foreign policy. Many of the assumptions that caused James to project encompassing policies were continued by Charles I, an unstudied element of British continuity between the two reigns. Ultimately, failure to emphasize the need for British unity in relation to a variety of civil policies would be an important factor in the fall of the Stuart monarchy during the British civil wars of the 1640s.

Call me un-educated, but I never heard of this guy Tibor. I casually discovered this book at the library when I noticed the Queen of England as a black woman. "What???" I asked myself as I picked up the book. In less than a minute of browsing the pages, I knew this was a book I wanted to own.

Kalman and his team of designers have truly touched upon the surface of great creativity, inventiveness and rare novelty. It was so refreshing to see work that dared to be different as opposed to just conventionally entertaining. I was so impressed in fact, I rushed to the store and bought one of his crumpled paper weights!
