Book Description

Suddenly confronted with his own mortality after a routine checkup, eminent psychotherapist Julius Hertzfeld is forced to reexamine his life and work -- and seeks out Philip Slate, a sex addict whom he failed to help some twenty years earlier. Yet Philip claims to be cured -- miraculously transformed by the pessimistic teachings of German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer -- and is, himself, a philosophical counselor in training. Philips dour, misanthropic stance compels Julius to invite Philip to join his intensive therapy group in exchange for tutoring on Schopenhauer. But with mere months left, life may be far too short to help Philip or to compete with him for the hearts and minds of the group members. And then again, it might be just long enough.

"

From novelist and master psychotherapist Irvin Yalom, author of Lying on the Couch and When Nietzsche Wept, comes the world's first accurate group-therapy novel, a mesmerizing story of two men's search for meaning.

At one time or another, all of us have wondered what we'd do in the face of death. Suddenly confronted with his own mortality after a routine checkup, distinguished psychotherapist Julius Hertzfeld is forced to reexamine his life and work. Has he really made an enduring difference in the lives of his patients? And what about the patients he's failed? What has happened to them? Now that he is wiser and riper, can he rescue them yet?

Reaching beyond the safety of his thriving San Francisco practice, Julius feels compelled to seek out Philip Slate, whom he treated for sex addiction some twenty-three years earlier. At that time, Philip's only means of connecting to humans was through brief sexual interludes with countless women, and Julius's therapy did not change that. He meets with Philip, who claims to have cured himself -- by reading the pessimistic and misanthropic philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer.

Much to Julius's surprise, Philip has become a philosophical counselor and requests that Julius provide him with the supervisory hours he needs to obtain a license to practice. In return, Philip offers to tutor Julius in the work of Schopenhauer. Julius hesitates. How can Philip possibly become a therapist? He is still the same arrogant, uncaring, self-absorbed person he had always been. In fact, in every way he resembles his mentor, Schopenhauer. But eventually they strike a Faustian bargain: Julius agrees to supervise Philip, provided that Philip first joins his therapy group. Julius is hoping that six months with the group will address Philip's misanthropy and that by being part of a circle of fellow patients, he will develop the relationship skills necessary to become a therapist.

Philip enters the group, but he is more interested in educating the members in Schopenhauer's philosophy -- which he claims is all the therapy anyone should need -- than he is in their individual problems. Soon Julius and Philip, using very different therapeutic approaches, are competing for the hearts and minds of the group members.

Is this going to be Julius's swan song -- a splintered group and years of good work down the drain? Or will all the members, including Philip, find a way to rise to the occasion that brings with it the potential for extraordinary change? In The Schopenhauer Cure, Irvin Yalom elegantly weaves the true story of Schopenhauer's psychological life throughout the narrative, knitting together fact and fiction to form a compellingly readable tale.

2 out of 5 stars Look what they've done to my brains, ma..........2007-09-10

If you happen to be of the opinion that:
a) Life is a pretty unpleasant experience, full of silly cravings, boredom and suffering;
b) This world really does not offer much comfort, rather resembling, as Hamlet would say, "a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours" (and this was before humans were surrounded by factories and roads!);
c) Most (if not all) human beings you meet are not only incredibly dull but full of unrealistic opinions and expectations...

Well then, look no further, Yalom has got just the cure for you! (Not that you had thought you were ill, of course, but believe us, you are!) In his wonderfully enlightening novel you can learn all about your true ailment. However sane (and soothing) your ideas may appear to yourself, if they aren't upbeat and optimistic and full of hope, then oh dear, you are an antisocial character in urgent need of help!
Yalom offers a very easy solution for your anomaly: group therapy. All you have to do is expose yourself to hour-long superficial chattering sessions with a bunch of strangers about their private little expectations and frustrations (as if one didn't get enough of that day in and day out). This, the experienced psychiatrist turned novelist explains, will help you understand just how WRONG you are. Forget about centuries of wisdom - from Buddha through Aristotle to the infamous Schopenhauer - that might in any way support your endeavour to distance yourself from the banalities and pains of everyday life. After all, as Yalom will gladly prove to you, those great sages lived in the awful past, when there was poverty and hunger and toil and wars and violence and hatred and ignorance - things we have long overcome, as you have surely noticed (if not, you're obviously reading/watching questionable things). What you need is to appreciate the elevating powers of human contact: such as evenings spent with your pals in a crowded bar, drinking beers and discussing the Giants (metaphysical issues are so passé!); or ever exciting emotional involvements with people who just crave to give you some love (never mind what that's supposed to be).

The highly therapeutic way in which Yalom chooses to prove just how lonely one may end up being if one indulges in the slightest negative thoughts regarding the company of other bipeds is quite astonishing and does deserve some careful reading: by creating a highly antisocial, arrogant and detached character supposedly resembling a modern-day Schopenhauer, the author shows us step by step the uselessness of following that great philosopher's wise advice in order to make life (slightly) more bearable. Confronting this (quite superficial) Schopenhauer-like character with a wonderfully caring psychotherapist plus his entourage of regularly confused but life-loving patients, Yalom's novel actually provides a very good example of the power of group-enforced conformity. Indeed, in the hands of this helpful bunch of astonishingly appealing one-dimensional characters, our protagonist undergoes a great transformation, gradually distancing himself from the most down-to-earth, but alas unappetizing, teachings of his supposed master, Schopenhauer.
You see, that German philosopher really was a cranky chap. Reading Yalom's novel will in fact provide you with countless quotations from his works, as well as a pretty good overview of his life. Sure, he was a genius and influenced many other brains (such as Nietzsche, Cekhov, Freud, Thomas Mann). But Yalom concludes also that Schopenhauer was an unhappy human (as compared to the rest of us, apparently) who could have well used a heavy dose of therapy to cure him from his dreadful pessimism and socio-phobia! Unfortunately for him (but very fortunately for his readers/followers), the wonderful business of psychotherapy had still not been invented back then. So our friend the philosopher was doomed to content himself with thinking and writing.
We are only so lucky nowadays that we can resort to doctors as soon as the slightest feeling of spiritual discomfort sets in. And there's even rumour of an anti-pessimism pill being manufactured as we speak... Schopenhauer no more!

But just in case you are mad enough to actually want to hold on to your negative views (at your own risk!), I would strongly advise you to skip this book and go to the sources instead: Schopenhauer's "Counsels and Maxims" is not only a great introduction to his wise words, but just about indispensable for anyone interested in understanding the roots of our sufferings (and how to deal with them). And Rudiger Safranski's "Schopenhauer and the Wild Years of Philosophy" will provide you with a much more accurate (and less judgemental) portrait of this amazingly realistic philosopher's life and influences.

3 out of 5 stars a contrivance for sermonizing.......2007-06-01

A perfect mensch of an aging psychiatrist gets melanoma with a prognosis of "one good year." In crisis, he recontacts a former patient--a "treatment failure" who embodies schizoid personality disorder by relating only to the late (and also schizoid) German philosopher Schopenhauer.
The shrink brings the patient into a therapy group. The group reels in reaction but ultimately "cures" the patient. Everyone lives happily ever, except the psychiatrist (who is redeemed) and Schopenhauer (who is irredeemable).
People need active, healthy relationships. Get it?
I have nothing but respect for Yalom as a clinician. His textbooks on group and existential therapy are famous for good reason and his popularized clinical vignettes (_Love's Executioner_) are warm and thoughtful. _The Schopenhauer Cure_, however, is a disappointment. It's not so much a novel as a contrivance for sermonizing.

5 out of 5 stars If you liked When Nietzsche Wept..........2007-04-15

...then you'll enjoy the Schopenhauer Cure. While extremely moving at times, it lacks some of When Nietzsche Wept's depth. Nevertheless, it's an interesting tale, well told, and a great introduction to Schopnhauer's core ideas (and thus many of Existentialism's central concerns).

5 out of 5 stars The Schopenhauer Cure: A Novel (P.S.).......2007-03-15

I've been a big fan of Yalom's non-fiction. I loved this, too. The people depicted come right off the page as very real. Then you get all of Yalom's great insights about their motivation and thinking. And it's fun reading, not labored. He better be working on another one.

4 out of 5 stars Very good counseling read.......2007-01-04

If you are a counselor or anyone in the helping professions this is a very good read. Very eye opening as the characters begin to lose their masks and come clean to who they really are.

In 1889, opera diva and amateur investigator Irene Adler (the only woman ever to outwit Sherlock Holmes in the original Conan Doyle stories) is called on to investigate the slaughter of several prostitutes in a Parisian brothel. The house is frequented by British royals and not entirely unknown to Adler's wealthy patron. Adler sees that the French murders bear a disturbing resemblance to the still unsolved English crimes perpetrated by Jack the Ripper. Along with her companion Nell Huxleigh, who plays Dr. Watson to Adler's Holmes, and a mysterious young woman named Pink, whose intimate knowledge of sexual peccadilloes in high and low places horrifies Nell, Adler follows an unknown killer's bloody trail from the Arc de Triomphe to the catacombs and sewers of late-19th-century Paris. This is a lively historical thriller as well as a smart and faithful extension of the Holmes canon. Irene Adler justly deserves the spotlight Carole Nelson Douglas shines on her in this, her fifth outing. -- Jane Adams

    Book Description

Before Caleb Carr and Laurie R. King, Carole Nelson Douglas gave readers a compelling look into Victoriana with a bold new detective character: Irene Adler, the only woman to ever outwit Sherlock Holmes. An operatic diva and the intellectual equal of most of the men she encounters, Irene is as much at home with disguises and a revolver as with high society and haute couture.Chapel Noir is the fifth book in Carole Nelson Douglas's critically acclaimed Irene Adler series, which reinvents "the woman" that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced in "A Scandal in Bohemia" as the heroine of her own extravagant adventures. This time readers are thrust into one of the darkest periods of criminal fact and fiction when two courtesans are found brutally slaughtered in the lavish boudoir of a Paris house. No woman should ever see such horrors, authorities declare, but a powerful sponsor has insisted that Irene investigate the case, along with her faithful companion, sheltered parson's daughter Penelope Huxleigh. But does anyone really seek the truth, or do they wish only to bury it with the dead women--for there is a worse horror that will draw Irene and her archrival, Sherlock Holmes, into a duel of wits with a fiendish opponent. These Paris killings mimic a series of gruesome murders that terrorized London only months before, in a dangerous and disreputable part of town known as Whitechapel....

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back Irene Adler and Nell........2007-04-12

Come join Ms. Douglas on a wild ride in Paris in spring of 1889. It is the year of the unveiling of the Eiffel Tower as well as the scene of the 1889 World's Fair. And Irene and Nell are on the trail of a particularly vicious killer. Could it be that Jack the Ripper who terrorized London last fall has moved on to Paris? There are a number of particularly gruesome killings involving women in Paris that spring. So Irene and Nell who are joined by a young American protegy called Pink are trying to stop the slaughters. With the aid of Sherlock Holmes, an American trapper called Buffalo Bill Cody, an Indian tracker called Red Tomahawk as well as some French Gendarmes, it looks like they may be successful. But be prepared this book leaves the reader with a mighty big cliff-hanger, so that we feel that we have to rush right out and get the next book in the series. Ms. Douglas' series is a winner. I am really enjoying the stories about Irene Adler.

5 out of 5 stars Jack the Ripper in Paris with a female detective in pursuit.......2004-04-29

Irene Adler is the only female adversary to outwit Sherlock Holmes and she may have stolen his heart as well. Carol Nelson Douglas has taken the brief outline of Irene Adler in the Sherlock Holmes adventure A Scandal In Bohemia and fleshed it out into a marvelous sleuth of her own design. She has created her own series of books with Irene Adler as a 19th century detective with a feminist flair.

Adler's latest two-part adventure, Chapel Noir and Castle Rouge, is told through a series of journal entries by her female companion Penelope Huxleigh. Additional chapters are supposedly taken from notes written by a prostitute called Pink and sections of a mysterious yellow book of anonymous authorship. This multiple "authorship" allows Douglas to present her story from different perspectives.

And what a story! In Chapel Noir Adler is called on by Baron de Alphonse Rothschild to investigate a particularly bloody murder in a Parisian bordello. Before long Jack the Ripper is the suspect and Sherlock Holmes (sans Watson) has come to Paris to investigate. As the plot moves on, more famous historical figures are drawn in either as suspects or allies. 470 pages later I found, instead of the end, that this is the first of a two part story.

A rollicking adventure that continues for another 470 pages in Castle Rouge. Lots of fun if you can stand the gruesome aspects of the crimes.

5 out of 5 stars And then there was Pink..........2004-01-30

This book sat on my shelf for two years because I bought it by mistake. Well, the mistake was not reading it sooner! It's great! I am disappointed in my fellow readers who obviously haven't checked the FACTS of the book.

#1. The suspect in the story (read it yourself, Mac!) is a genuine Jack-the-Ripper suspect, and considered by many to actually BE the Ripper. He had murdered his wife and was an escapee (or more likely let go) from a madhouse.

#2. The Ripper murders have always been claimed to show some religious or occult symbol, authors vary on what. Me, the ol' Raven is like The Great Randi, skeptic unparalleled, who points out that any pattern is only possible if you connect the dots that way.

#3. Pink. Yes, that was her nickname, and her name as given in the book is her real one. But no one remembers her by that name, since she is world-famous under a pseudonym. I won't say what it was, but if I did all of you would slap your forehead and say "Oh, yeah! I've heard of her!" You probably think Mark Twain was his real name too.

As for the story ending midstream, do you really want an 800 page book? There's just too much to tell in one story. So read Castle Rouge. It'll pay. Quoth the Raven...

    1 out of 5 stars Pretentious Neo-Feminist Dreck!.......2003-10-07

Awful stuff. Torpid and turgid with sad delusions of grandeur. A painful read. Plot development is slow and the author takes every opportunity to trumpet the ladies and denigrate the men. I could have swallowed that if the book had moved at a decent clip. Instead, we are subjected to the blatherings between Adler and Nell ad nauseaum. In one particular scene, the author takes over 3 pages of conversation and description as the two main protagonists pick up a few crumbs from the first crime scene.

The topper was the "discussion questions" and interview with the author at the end of the book. These clearly displayed the author's self-infatuation and pretense of "deep ideas", with the questions focusing on women's roles in the 19th century and such tired old chestnuts as the duality of sexual mores concerning men and women's roles and habits (e.g. If Jack the Ripper had murdered a series of men, would anyone still be talking about him and what are the societal connotations of this apparent infatuation with men savaging women? Why was it acceptable for men to be promiscuous and women not to be?). It all smacks of freshmen-year pseudo-intellectual claptrap.

If you want a well-paced mystery novel, try Caleb Carr, Lindsey Davis, George Pelecanos, Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow, Rosemary Rowe, Agatha Christie, Steven Saylor or David Wishart.

How bad is this book? How high is "up"? I'm kicking myself for buying the hardcover version. I plan to give it away as a gift to someone I don't really like.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time!.......2003-02-25

I was incredibly disapointed with Carole Nelson Douglas' new Irene Adler mystery, 'Chapel Noir'. This is the 5th in what used to be a first-rate mystery/adventure series tied in with the Sherlock Holmes characters.
'Chapel Noir' has Irene Adler and Nell pursuing the infamous Jack The Ripper of 1889 in what could have been a potentialy thrilling mystery, but instead we are subjected to 450 pages of endless 'girl talk'! As a bonus, Nelson Douglas adds a character of a reformed American prostitute in Paris, who prefers to go by the anachronistic name of 'Pink'. This character appears so unauthentic and bogus, Douglas must have intended readers to be reminded of the current rock star 'Pink' of the same name! Even more annoying, Pink joins the two female characters in this constant chattering that always keeps the mystery from ever begining! Why?! Because 'Chapel Noir' even at 450 pages, is only the first half of the 'adventure'! This story continues in the sequel 'Chapel Rouge', which is why Douglas gave us three clucking female slueths instead of the usual two!
Go back and re-read Carole Nelson Douglas's previous Irene Adler novels, which were all either good and even terrific. In particular, look for the titles 'Irene At Large' and 'Irene's Last Waltz' which are among the very best of Holmes era mysteries anywhere.
As for 'Chapel Noir' don't waste your time!

      Book Description

Inspired by acceptance of several articles about email correspondence with her three college students who chose colleges in different areas of the United States, Esther C. Gropper adapted the email to recollections of her own life experiences and then went beyond those boundaries into imaginative scenarios. She shared many intimate thoughts from her granddaughters who asked her to share her life experiences with them. They asked for counsel about their own dilemmas. Each was caught up in a contemporary perplexity that affects women seeking a career and good marriage. These awakened her won feelings and thoughts that she shared with them. A strong bond exists as a consequence. Events are placed in historic prospective which make the book a personal documentation of a changing society, of turbulent times. They are woven together by family ties and loyalties.

Answer true or false to these ten statements:

      (1) Sleep is frequently overlooked as a factor in the treatment of many serious conditions.
      (2) There is little evidence to suggest that there is a link between obesity and sleep deprivation.
      (3) Your waking life is spent preparing for sleep.
      (4) Insomnia, in many cases, simply stems from poor preparation for sleep.
      (5) Good sleepers go to bed early while bad sleepers go to bed late.
      (6) For most of us, a nap during the day is a good idea.
      (7) Excessive daytime sleepiness is essentially the same as insomnia.
      (8) It's the ability to sleep, rather than the need for sleep, that seems to decrease with age.
      (9) Chronic insomnia is a risk factor for psychiatric illness.
      (10) The self-examination of snoring is best done while brushing your teeth; that is, look directly into the mirror, open your mouth, and stick out your tongue.

If you answered true to any of statements (2,5,6,7) or false to any of statements (1,3,4,8,9,10), then you may need the help of this book by Dr. Gerald Lombardo who directs a sleep center in Brooklyn, New York.

This is an easy-to-read, concise book about sleep disorders. In fact, the author says he wrote this book "because the problems associated with sleep disorders are very urgent."

All chapters are broken up into sections so you can access vital information quickly. Below I will either present what I consider are the main sections of a chapter or indicate the main focus of a particular chapter:

      (1) Big Numbers ("The numbers of people with sleep problems of all kinds are alarming and very costly for society at large"); Day Doctors and Night Doctors (doctors are many times unaware that a patient's daytime problems are caused by his/her night problem); 24/7 (problems of the 24 hour, 7 day business environment); Sleep and weight; Sleep to save the lives of other people; Sleep to save your quality of life; Sleep deprivation-the next generation.
      (2) Why do we sleep; Sleep needs at different stages of life; Memory (and sleep); Keys to your sleeping problems; The drive to sleep-part of our elementary humanity
      (3) Getting ready to sleep; Sleep hygiene
      (4) Normal and abnormal sleepiness; For the birds (Larks or day people versus Owls or night people)
      (5) Snoring
      (6) Sleep apnea (involves cessation of breathing due to the blockage of the windpipe during sleeping)
      (7) Snoring and sleep apnea treatment
      (8) Narcolepsy (results from a faulty switch between waking and sleep)
      (9) Restless legs syndrome (the production of uncomfortable sensations in the legs during sleep)
      (10) Insomnia (chronic sleeplessness)
      (11) Parasomnia (refers to a behavior or condition that takes place around or alongside sleep that has nothing to do with the central purpose of sleep and in fact detracts from it)
      (12) Children and sleep
      (13) Women and sleep
      (14) Seniors and sleep
      (15) Shift workers and sleep

In the appendix (not labeled as such), there are examples of "sleep diaries." A sleep diary "is one of the best tools...for treating certain sleep problems at the least cost."

Throughout much of the book are tables, graphs, and illustrations. I found all of these very helpful.

Finally, there is a list of sleep resources in the back of the book. This consists of almost twenty helpful internet sites.

In conclusion, don't let sleep difficulties dominate your waking life. Take positive steps now to solve them by reading this book!!!

(first published 2005; acknowledgements; introduction; 15 chapters; main narrative 280 pages; sleep diaries; references; resources; index)

5 out of 5 stars The Best Cellar Book.......2000-07-25

If you are serious about recording (and drinking) your wine collection this book by Hugh Johnson is a must. It contains details on cellaring techniques, bottle and glass shapes as well as a history of cellaring. Most importantly it contains information on how to structure your cellar i.e. where to put your bottles.

First and foremost this book is for recording your wines - their location in the cellar, where you purchased them, cost price, quantity, tasted date and most importantly, what they tasted like. It contains a mass of pages for recording your case lots, as well as a large section for recording individual bottles as they pass through your cellar.

Resist the temptation to get software to manage your cellar, get this book and enjoy the relaxed pleasure of maintaining your catalogue with the old fashioned medium of pen and paper, and a suitably filled glass in the other hand.

              Book Description

This comprehensive and detailed reference guide to Rolex's sports model watches is an indispensable asset to watch collectors and dealers. The only work of its kind, it covers the history of the Submariner, Explorer, GMT-Master, Turn-O-Graph, Milgauss, and Cosmograph watches, from 1952 to 1990. The history of more than a hundred and forty vintage models is described in detail, with the watches shown in chronological order. Color photographs illustrate every watch model, with hundreds of diagrams providing clear and useful information. Twenty-two rare Rolex brochures from private collections are shown, in addition to numerous catalog photographs and the sale prices of sports models sold at Christie's and Sotheby's over the last four years. Also included is a current price guide for every model shown in the book. At a time when Rolex watches dominate the collecting market, this authoritative volume is an essential and timely addition to the library of the Rolex collector and dealer.

A most impressively comprehensive and finely detailed reference that will prove to be of great usefulness and interest to me when handling Rolex watches, and when talking to and advising collectors and enthusiasts.

4 out of 5 stars Nice book to add to the collection.......2007-08-18

Pictures are of good quality. A good book to add to the collection, each watch has good description and on the watch movement.
It is a limited market, you have to remember its a book on the vintage watches and not modern Rolex watches.

Great book for watch enhusiast. Although it only takes us up to 1997, so I was dispointed, The pictures are good, the history covers the basics. I would recommend to add to the collection

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for all fans of vintage Rolex sports watches.......2007-01-17

The authors describe this book as a "comprehensive and detailed reference guide to Rolex's sports model watches" and "an indispensable asset to watch collectors and dealers". Modest? No. Correct? Absolutely!

The book is divided into 18 chapters, starting with Rolex chronology and the tool watch concept, followed by chronological descriptions of all models in the Submariner, Sea-Dweller, GMT-Master, Explorer, Milgauss, Turn-O-Graph and Cosmograph model ranges respectively. More brief chapters are dealing with bracelets, boxes, paperwork, and movements. Statistical data in the form of production dates and a price guide is also included.

              What I particularly like
First of all, the great advantage of this book is the fact that all watches depicted are from the authors' own collections - this has allowed them to photograph all watches in the exact same position and size, making comparisons between the different model variants very easy. This is important when comparing with other books on Rolex, that mainly use 3rd party photos.

All models are described in chronological order, with information on model number, production period, movement number, bracelet type and size, and some 5-15 lines of specifics for that particular model, pointing towards the - often small - details distinguishing it from previous or later models. I.e. for the 6263 Daytona such text reads: "In 1971 the 6263 model replaced the 6264 model. The model was available with either the standard or exotic dial, and had T Swiss T at the bottom of the dial. On this example, the word Cosmograph is written in a semicircle around the upper half of the lower recording dial." Essential knowledge, really ;-)

Secondly, all models are accompanied by a detailed profile drawing, allowing comparisons of the shapes of glass and bezel, as well as case thickness. Important, when you want to identify the "Superdome" glass profile.

Third, there are 40+ pages of reprints of vintage Rolex brochures, advertisments, owners booklets, catalogues etc. For Sea-Dweller afficionados it will be great to see the 1981 owner's booklet reprint on page 178, showing the 1665 with acrylic lens and 2000 feet rating, alongside the 16660 with sapphire crystal and 4000 feet rating. Later that year, the 1665 was discontinued, leaving only the 16660.

Last, but not least, I really enjoy chapter 18, "Watches sold at Auction" - 50 pages of pictures and details of Rolex watches sold at auctions at Christie's and Sothebys's, in the period 1997-2004. In 1998, a "Red" Submariner 1680 was sold for mere USD 2165. Read and weep... or start collecting right away.

Ahh - not to forget - this is a relatively new book, published in 2005.

              Any drawbacks, then?
Not really - or at least nothing major. Although given the title "COMPLETE Visual Reference", one would expect the book to contain pictures of ALL known model variantions. This is apparently not the case, as the military issue of the Submariner 5513 is shown only with the special "high visibility" hand design - while Rolex collectors, as well as James Dowling's Rolex book, will tell, that the military models were also available with the standard "Mercedes" hands. This would have been nice to know, before one accuses eBay sellers of vintage Rolex watches for selling un-original or Frankenstein watches. I won't do that again...

One should note, though, that this books deals with "vintage" models only - that excludes any model currently in production, obviously. For the reason of comparing model evolution, I for one would like to see the current version (i.e. the one on my wrist) pictured alongside it's ancestors, in order to compare those small, but essential details on the dial layout. But then again...

How does it compare to other Rolex books, then?
This will depend on how BROAD one's Rolex interest is, and in which STAGE of Rolex ownership one is.

John Brozek's "Rolex report" provides excellent value for money for the first-time buyer of a modern Rolex, who doesn't want to get "eScrewed" - John's expression, not mine. Lot of stuff on identifying fakes, as well as tons of statistical data and pricelists - showing retail as well as wholesale amounts. Quite good to know the latter, when someone is offering you a never worn NIB Rolex for less... Why, it should make you wonder.

Many people praise James Dowlings book "The Best of Time" as THE Rolex book to get. Maybe so - but not my cup of tea. Far too much emphasis on the very early Prince and Bubbleback models and only brief descriptions of the tool watches.

For some buyers, the overall Rolex history in this book will be too brief, or the statistics on production dates incomplete (as they end in 1998). Do not despair - buy this book anyway, and read the rest on the various Rolex internet forums.

So, my personal view is, that if you are a current or potential owner of a "Professional" series model, Martin Skeet and Nick Urul's excellent book will give you the most relevant insights. It's certainly my favorite, and the one I would chose over all other Rolex books I have seen so far.

Buy and enjoy - You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Not just another pretty Fleece..........2001-10-23

Polar Magic, third in the Polarfleece series by Nancy Cornwell, is a not only a great source of ideas, but also is a wealth of information for handling this tricky material.

The first two chapters condense her first book (for those of us who haven't yet bought it) into the bare minimums of successful sewing with fleece. They cover special requirements for stitch lengths, tension, foot pressures, stabilizing, and helpful or necessary notions. These are covered in more detail in "Adventures in Polarfleece," her first book. Okay, I've seen it and borrowed it at the library several times, just haven't bought it yet.

After that, there are ideas and techniques galore! From creating your own matching ribbing (which I thought was a great idea), to trapunto, to reverse and double applique. This fabric is actually becoming fun to work with. After struggling with stretched wavy hems, bulky seams, and ending up with plain, unembellished robes (blanket stitched edges don't count), I've been inspired to sculpt, brand, and fringe to create more interesting effects on my Hawaiian style winterwear.

This book is a welcome addition to my collection. It looks like I will have to order the first one as well. Back to the shopping cart.......

2 out of 5 stars Another glossy picture book.......2002-03-12

Seems less than half the examples are houses; the rest are studios, guest houses, or cabins. All stylishly spare and uninviting. And while there are occasional floor plans and elevations, and about two detail drawings, the emphasis is on the pictures. You'll finish this book in about 20 minutes and wonder why anyone would spend money on these unlivable houses.

              5 out of 5 stars A good example of down-to-earth design.......2000-03-06

This book is a good resource for people who are looking to build a smaller, designed home. It shows that architects aren't just in business to build 10,000 sq. ft. trophy homes like the ones in the other two books in this series. It is full of ideas for designers and home onwners alike. It can be used as a starting point for opening up communication between client and designer. The thing I like most about this book series is that the author includes some of the construction drawings for some choice details. A student could learn a lot about how to put something together from these drawings (although, some are a little unclear and lack the neccesary context drawings, but I do this thing for a living and I like to see the whole picture when comes to why these designers came up with such COOL stuff!)

              5 out of 5 stars A smaller home revelation........1999-12-30

For those with smaller homes who are searching for ideas, this book is a real find. Tons of color photos showing great detail. The material of choice is wood, but some metal structures are included. This is not a back to the 60's book about building with remnants. The homes are first rate with a tremendous amount of innovation and care. I stole more than a few ideas for my own home.

What is a plus in this music book is that it includes additional artwork previously unreleased, or just released on the LP edition of The Final Cut. Also showing some stills from the fairly rare VHS that was released at the time, to be more precise, from the "Not Now John" music video. The music is very well transcribed for vocals, keyboards and accoustic guitar, but still, no Guitar Tablature Edition is available on the market , which might not be suitable for Dave Gilmour's die hard "Solo" fans. Mind you that some of the rare artwork in the book was released on the Remastered Edition of The Final Cut CD.
