This was truly the best novel I've read. I was totally absorbed in this story and all of the characters. Pilcher's descriptive writing makes you feel you are there. You see what is written. You smell the smells and hear the sounds. You definitely feel what is going on. I don't think I ever loved a character more than Penelope. I couldn't put this down, yet I never wanted it to end. I wish these people were real so I could sit with them and learn more about their lives. Thank you Rosamunde for making me love your story!
Best Book I've Read in a Long Time.......2007-06-06
This book deserves more than 5 stars. A co-worker gave it to me to read while she was looking for a book by another author whose series I started reading. I feel spoiled now and don't want to read a book by a different author! I have not finished The Shell Seekers yet, but if I had my way I would take a day off from work and read it from the time I get up in the morning til the time I go to bed so I can just immerse myself in it. The characters are so realistic and you get so drawn into their saga of their lives that you feel that you are a part of their world. You will love to hate Noel and Nancy who are the incredibly spoiled adult-brats of Penelope! This is just an incredibly delicious book and I can't say enough good things about it. Just read it and you'll see why so many people gave it a 5 star rating.

It's the Sex Pistols vs. the BeeGees, Studio 54 and the Dirt Lounge, est and yin/yang, gas shortages, Quaaludes, pot and polyester, Plato's Retreat, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the neutron bomb.

The prior reviewers have done a good job. I will just add a very enthusiastic additional vote for buying this book as soon as you can. It is so well constructed compared to most of its competitors.
I was left with a feeling of 'When can I get me hands on the next one?' when I finished this book. I would have read both back to back if I had the second one today.

I read the most recent Moe Prager novel first, and went back to this one with eagerness but also some trepidation in case it wasn't as good. But it completely lived up to my expectations. Reed Farrel Coleman is an excellent writer and this series is a must-read for any noir fan.
The First Moe Prager: Walking The Perfect Square.......2004-03-31
On December 8, 1977 Patrick Maloney, Jr., college student, walked out of a local bar and vanished. As 19977 became 1978 other things in New York City like the arrest of the Son of Sam killer garner media attention. For recently retired Police Officer Moe Prager, the disappearance of Patrick Maloney, Jr. is insignificant and no different than many of the ills that befall the city's population. Not that Patrick isn't important in his own right, but Moe has more on his mind thanks to a ruined knee and is facing limited prospects and a lonely life.
At relative loose ends when his friend and still a cop Rico Tripoli calls, he agrees to meet him for lunch at a local restaurant. Rico wants to talk to him about looking for Patrick. Once there, despite the obvious racism of the missing man's powerful father, Patrick Maloney, he agrees to start working the case in exchange for a favor regarding a much needed liquor license. Moe's brother wants him to go in with him on a wine shop and without any other options Moe has sort of agreed to do so. As he begins working the case, he realizes that he has missed the streets and soon discovers that everyone involved is lying to him. Nothing is the way he thought it was with his enemies or his friends.
Twenty years later the case still haunts him and a call from a Nun in a local hospice brings it all back to life. A man is dying and wishes to unburden himself and will only do so to Me Prager. He may finally get the last piece of the painful puzzle that has haunted him for years and nearly destroyed his family.
This is a very good novel featuring a number of interesting characters. The read is a little disconcerting at times as it moves back and forth between 1977 and 78, and the present (1998). I'm not a fan of flashbacks, extended or otherwise, but in this case it actually enhances the story. By moving back and forth, it creates a different perspective for the reader as the mystery is slowly solved.
At the same time, the author has an incredible sense of detail and an uncanny ability to bring the work alive for the reader. He really got into my head and made me feel like I was there right with him, step for step, as he worked the case. There are not very many authors who can totally pull me into their world like that and he did it easily within the first ten pages or so. His characters were rich and complex with a decidedly noir slant and his sense of pacing and story development was right on.
This was a very good read and according to my local library, the first novel of a new series built around the main character, Moe Prager. Unfortunately my local library does not have his earlier novels, "Little Easter," Life Goes Sleeping," and "They don't Play Stickball In Milwaukee." You can bet I'm going to be looking for them.
Hardboiled Brooklyn.......2003-07-01
Moses 'Moe' Prager, the protag. of Reed Farrel Coleman's "Walking the Perfect Square" is a real stand up guy. He measures up with the best characters from the Noir canon.
An ex-cop with one bad leg and too much time on his hands makes the kind of p.i. you can count on. He's seen a lot and can put two and two together. Hey you do the math!
If you miss the "Rockford" or "Columbo" type mysteries, love NY or just want a story that goes down smooth give this one a spin!
One Reason 1978 was a Good Year.......2003-03-20
Walking the Perfect Square evokes the late 70's in New York City, and I mean the real city as only a real "five-borough" New Yorker can know it. What makes the main character, Moe Praeger, so compelling is his intensity of desire -- for a solution, for the truth, and for thin-lipped tough Catholic girls. Reed Farrel Coleman commits no technical fouls weaving his intricate plot to this reader's immense narrative satisfaction and delight. I look forward to more.

When did Mage become D & D...?.......2000-07-24
This is a good book and all... if you are playing Mage instead of Dungeons and Dragons by accident. Whose idea was it to add the Bladesinger to the White-Wolf universe?
Beside the fact that this book as all about the rouge-magician, it's still a Mage book, which, for some, is good enough. It definately adds a different touch, and a different feel, to the oracle and philosopher feel that all too many Mage: SC games have.
All in all, no too bad a buy. Just remember to seperate your WW and D&D.

The Guide.......2002-01-24
Dr. Bob's "Guide to Turning Back the Clock" is 100 percent accurate and a good motivational tool for both men and women. I had no idea that enriched flour ... is so bad for your body. He has some very good ideas on how to eat and "fuel" your body. I especially liked the sections on roller blading and cross country skiing. This is the "one" diet/fitness book to have at your side. Cousin Arnold is right: "Be the best you've ever been. Now is the time and this is the book!"

great book, very informative, talks about not only diet, but also the importance of exercise and mixing it up. Not just cardio but muscle building/strengthening as well. No BS in his book, everything makes sense. Oh yeah, Arnie recommends it.

Very informative book. It contains a lot of useful information. I became bored with many parts of the book especially when Dr. Arnot went into long discussions on topics like which sports equipment to purchase. Overall the book contained very practical information. I found the diet information extremely useful, but a little hard to actually implement. For a short time after reading the book, I actually did follow Dr. Arnot's eating advice and felt better than I have in a long time.

I do not say this lightly! I must own over 100 cookbooks; Vegan, French, Pastry, Chinese you name it.. This cookbook sends every other cookbook into oblivion. Every single recipe in this book is do-able (except the pie crust, p. 168). You will find a wealth of information here as well as tasty, healthy and user-friendly recipes. I bought this cookbook when I first got married in '89 and it is the one I check back with, pick up again and again. Buy this cookbook, for yourself, for your neighbor, friends, sister-in-law, anyone and everyone! It is truly an amazingly well written, well thought out cookbook.

Imari Satsuma book review.......2007-06-12
The pictures are wonderful and plentiful as well as history of the styles. What's painfully lacking are examples and explanations of marks. Two and a half pages representing 27 marks with minimum information on any of them. I felt like it was a pretty book to look through, but a poor reference for those looking for information on how to buy Imari or Satsuma. I found no information at all about reproductions or modern pieces that have flooded the market and make it difficult for less than well informed buyers to get genuine pieces of antique Imari or Satsuma.

Of great interest to dealers and collectors of Japanese export ceramics, this book contains full color photographs of a large number of fine specimans of Imari, Satsuma, Banko and Sumida. Significant number of pieces from the Arts and Crafts period. Sections on markings, bibliography and valuations. I think the valuations are on the low side of current retail prices.

15 beautiful quilts featured, only let down is the layout and photography. Done by the author and her daughter, it lacks a little polish - the sort of design which makes Kaffe Fassett books stand out and the quilts zing!
With emphasis on pressed flowers and quilts designed from garden views, book covers no new territory but introduces some pretty patterns and lovely colorways.
The instructions are not as detailed as one could wish, but it makes a nice little book for browsing through.

Plans with Options.......2002-01-19
The plans in this book are refreshing and original. They have a lot of contemporary amenities such as big master suites and great rooms; but for the most part, these homes are fiarly reasonable in size. It is nice to see a home with under 2,000 sf of living space have a real luxury estate feel to it. Also, most of the plans tend to have a very large garage/basement space which is left for future use as playroom or workshop, which adds a large degree of flexibility to the plans.
I tend to look through home plan books as an imaginative exercise of architectural appreciation, and I'm not looking to build anytime soon. This may make my interest in the book different.
Not what I expected.......2001-06-08
I was hoping to find a nice selection of cabins, cottages, and villas, but what I found instead was perhaps only a handful of floorplans with differing elevations. Although it is a somewhat thick book, it is very deceiving with the variety of the content within it. Unfortunately, there's not too much.

Luxurious Cottages and Cabins.......2003-03-21
This book had many beautiful designed luxury vacation homes.
What was surprising were the many coastal cottages which was
what we wanted for our family beach home.
The average plan was around 2400 sq. feet, so they're a little
spacious yet perfect size for bringing our family together.
The plans were open and flowing for casual living with
master bedrooms mostly on the main floor and guests above.
I appreciate that in my later years! Ha!

What we really don't understand about nuclear weapons.......2005-10-30
Any person who thinks they understand what nuclear weapons do is mistaken. Unless they were targetted by one, as the survivors drawing this remarkable collection of pictures were. The collection began with one person bringing a hand-drawn picture to NHK, Japan's public broadcasting corporation. When the picture was displayed, thousands of survivors committed their memories to paper and sent in their lay art. This book is a distillation of the exhibit that was created. Many of the pictures have text within them explaining the situation. Translations to English are provided. Although the pictures are haunting enough, additional text of the survivor's recollections, in their own words, is included with each frame, putting the situation in context of what was happening when the explosion occured and what happened afterwards. The eloquence of their words is not easy to describe. The position of this book is that the world must know what these weapons--even the tiny ones used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki--do to living things. I found no trace of anger, only genuine concern that the people of the world find out what these weapons do before they find out firsthand.
From my job, I was familiar with the atomic bomb survivor cancer datasets, the calculated radiation doses, the arguments over how much came from neutrons and how much from penetrating radiation, and was familiar with the with-enough-shovels argument for how we could survive a limited nuclear exchange. I read the paperback version in 1977 and was amazed at how little I realy understood about the effects of nuclear weapons. I recently came across the copy, water-damaged from a minor basement flood, and went online to see what I could find. Finding that it was available in hardback was a relief. Please buy this book. Read it a few times. Share it with friends. Donate it to a library. Then buy another. Seriously.
Pictures of the apocalypse.......2001-01-19
I have never, ever encountered a book this powerful. The pictures it contains, though not drawn by artists, capture an immediate reality of what they had seen. In this case what they saw was the explosion and afterefects of an atomic bomb. The pictures that were burned in their memory, after many years were recorded on paper and shared. The images will be hard to forget.

A Brilliant and Compelling Book About The Rock Group U2!!!.......2003-02-21
This book is a wonderful look at the band known as U2. Named after a spy plane, this story takes you back to the band's humble beginnings in Dublin, Ireland and how a group of four young boys became one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time!!! It shows what incredible hardships each member had to face growing up, and all the obstacles the band has overcome. This books leads up to the band successful breakthrough album The Joshua Tree, and all the sacrifices the band had to endure to make it to that point. It also tells how Bono(Paul Hewson), and The Edge(David Evans) got dubbed their new names. Bono's name actually came from a hearing aid shop in Dublin called Bono Vox, which is latin for "good voice." That moniker seems to fit him perfectly, since he does have a damn good voice!!! Bono ended up giving the edge his name. I can't remember the source for his name, though. I'd better start reading the book again!!!
good backgroud information.......2002-02-06
Very detailed biographical information helps you understand where the band members (and others close to the band) come from and how and why they got to where they are now. Unfortunately this book only covers up to the release of Joshua Tree, but its great for information on the real early and formative years of the band. I found that some things were repeated many times throughout the book but at least that made you really remember them well. It was a fun read for a fan who wants to know more.
Interesting historical information with much digression........1997-04-04
Biographical information on the band members (and just about everyone else connected with them) and a decent amount of pictures (childhood included) make this a good addition to a fan's collection. The author, however, goes off on tangents, discussing subjects barely peripheral to the band
