Book Description

Packed with "juicy nuggets of bibliophile gold" (Booklist), this irresistibly suspenseful bestseller traces the mark of murder inside the world of rare books.

Assessing a book's value is Denver cop-turned-bookseller Cliff Janeway's expertise. But even a pro like Janeway could be supremely challenged by certain signed first editions. When is an autograph authentic? How can forgeries appear to be so convincingly real? The same questions apply, it seems, to a murder investigation in tiny Paradise, Colorado. Janeway agrees to help his lover, attorney Erin D'Angelo, determine if Erin's estranged childhood friend killed her husband -- or was her confession designed to protect her troubled young son? Then Janeway discovers the dead man's books: an impressive collection that may house some real gems. But it's not their financial worth that draws Janeway deeper into the case of deadly small-town secrets -- it's the hunger for peeling back layers of deception to reveal the genuine sign of the book. And in a case of cold-blooded murder, truth is a priceless commodity.

"From New York Times bestselling author John Dunning comes a riveting new Cliff Janeway Bookman novel, combining captivating book lore with page-turning suspense. Denver bookman and ex-cop Cliff Janeway is enjoying the good life, buying and selling the books he adores as he ekes out a living in his store on seedy East Colfax. And it doesn't hurt that superstar lawyer Erin D'Angelo has joined him as a partner in both business and love. Erin is a special lady, so it's hard for Janeway to refuse her when she asks a favor. Will he travel to the little mountain town of Paradise, Colorado, to check on one of Erin's girlhood friends who's in deep trouble? Laura Marshall sits in the county jail, accused of murdering her husband, Bobby. The situation is delicate because Bobby and Erin were a couple before he married Laura. In fact, it was Laura's affair with Bobby that ended Erin's relationship with each of them, and the women have been estranged ever since. Now Laura has called on Erin for help, but Erin's not sure she even wants to see her onetime best friend, let alone get involved in her case. Could Janeway visit Laura on Erin's behalf and try to find out what happened the night Bobby died? The clincher for Janeway: Bobby Marshall was a book collector, and Janeway can't resist a house full of books any more than he can resist Erin's uncharacteristic request. His normally self-sufficient girlfriend is clearly at loose ends. He drives to Paradise the next day. Janeway soon discovers that neither he nor Erin is likely to be able to save Laura Marshall. The young wife and mother is terrified of something and has already admitted to the arresting officer -- a smarmy local deputy with a huge chip on his shoulder -- that she shot her husband and then tried to dispose of the bloody evidence. But did everything really happen as Laura claims? And what about the books? Bobby had a vast library, but at a casual glance, the titles seem ordinary, even to a seasoned bookman like Janeway. Could they possibly be a motive for murder? Janeway, Erin, and local attorney Parley McNamara discover that the case against Laura Marshall is far more complicated than it seems. Professionally, Erin must decide whether to represent Laura; and personally, whether a decades-old friendship can be resurrected. Janeway wants to know the significance of Bobby's book collection. He senses their importance, and under his careful scrutiny, the rows of unremarkable volumes could reveal a killer's motive. Rich with the intricacies of book collecting that only an expert like John Dunning can offer, The Sign of the Book is a beautifully crafted, enthralling novel of suspense from the consummate bookman himself. 4 out of 5 stars Sweet Twist.......2007-07-21

Other reviews ding "Sign of the Book" for a langorous and almost-leads-nowhere subplot. I enjoyed the whole ride and I think the subplot sets up the surprise ending quite nicely. Dunning's mash-up of the used book and rare book world with murder and mayhem works nicely again, in all because Cliff Janeway is such a believable mash-up of ex-cop turned book dealer. He does have flaws, he does get brusque and tough, and he can square off with the toughest out there. My one problem here (minor issue) was the one-note, small-town-tough, jerk-cop character. Just too much of an easy enemy and his protestations from the witness stand, near the end, didn't seem plausible. But the shudders from the boy's drawings and the stunning revelation from the "death room" easily outweighed this flaw. A terrific ride in a Colorado mountain town. People who enjoy Cliff Janeway might also enjoy meeting a fellow fictional Coloradoan, Allison Coil. Antler Dust

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again;John Dunning continues to provide well woven bibliophile mysteries.......2007-07-08

Many times sequel novels fail to live up to their predecessors. I was not disappointed with this well woven tale and can't wait to continue reading more cliff janeway mysteries!

5 out of 5 stars A terrific mystery in a great series........2007-06-13

I love (and collect) books and I love mysteries and this series hits all the high notes.
Cliff Janeway is a complex and compelling character with just enough faults to make him interesting and a sense of honor that encourages trust.
The twists and turns in this mystery kept me from putting it down until I turned the last page.
Altogether a thoroughly satisfying story. I recommend it without reservation.

3 out of 5 stars Unfinished Business.......2007-06-13

The Sign of the Book will probably appeal more to new readers of this series than to those who have been reading all of the Cliff Janeway novels. Why? The Sign of the Book is weaker than the other books in the series but does have a tincture of the book world that will appeal to those who haven't read one before.

What's different? The book connection is modest . . . and overdeveloped from that modest base. Also, much of the book's action serves little purpose. Basically, this is a novella stretched into a novel. The stretching dilutes what could have been a taut, but shorter, story.

Here's the background: Cliff's partner and lover, Erin D'Angelo, gets a call from an old friend asking for legal help. Erin hasn't forgiven Laura Marshall for stealing Erin's old boyfriend and marrying him. Erin is also tied up in court so the most she can and will do is send Cliff to check matters out with local counsel.

Cliff quickly spots that Laura is being railroaded by an incompetent deputy. She's also holding something back. But what does all that mean in the context of her confession to murdering her husband?

With Laura locked up and not remembering much, Cliff decides he'll have to check matters out on his own. Before long, he's stirring up hornet's nest after hornet's nest of opposition. Two long stakeouts start to open up the case. From there, it's a waiting game as the puzzle is slowly put together.

Even if you are a Cliff Janeway fan, you could skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars I really, really love Cliff Janeways' books. The ultimate in smart mysteries...........2006-11-15

Janeway has opened an entire new world to me. As an avid reader who has a book in almost every room in the house including the garage, bathroom, and who reads during ironing, doing homework, or waiting for sugar to boil for making English Toffee, I can almost assuredly recognize not only genres but also the various nuances within the genres. JUst as women in this day and age tend to head towards tough broads who can fend for themselves in a man's world, Janeway brings in a cop whose adoration of written materal causes him to leave his probably more steady job as a policemen, to enter the world of rare books. An occasional job will bring in enough money to support his chosen lifestyle for a while, but more than that, his introduction into the interesting and secretive world of bibliophiles. These books not only whet my appetite for this world, but also introduces me to both real people and real books that helped to shape our world from behind the scenes.

Janeway's current flame has an old friend (who also delved into books) killed, and she wants him to find out who did it an what t he motive was. In doing so he ends up becoming involved in his lover's old friends and flames, so of which should be left undisturbed. But Janeway never is one to back down from a fight over 'rights and wrongs', and he doesnt' do that in this book either. I get the feeling when I read other reviews that the readers want something less complicated than what Janeway provides. If uncomplicated is what the readers want then they should go to other books, becasue there are times in Janeway's books that you just have to go back and understand why certain things are said or done in a true historical background and reality.

I wish Janeway could write fast than he does, because I thoroughly enjoy these very educated mysteries, but then, if he did write that way Janeway would not be as enjoyable as he is.

Inspector John Rebus of Edinburgh's finest has been knocking readers' socks off for years, in 10 full-length police procedurals by Ian Rankin that star the thoughtful, intelligent Scot. In this neat little novella, he does in 73 pages what many of his peers take three times as long to do--set an interesting scene, solve a crime, develop a character, and allow him to grow and change without sacrificing either pace or plot. Agreeing to track down the missing son of his high school sweetheart and her husband, a friend of his youth, Rebus takes the reader into the gritty back streets and criminal byways of Edinburgh, following Damon Mee from the nightclub where he was last seen through gambling casinos, football matches, and face-to-face encounters with the mobsters who may have been involved in his disappearance. Along the way Rebus confronts his own mortality, the choices he's made, and the obligations he owes his past. The theme of vanishing was spun off from Dead Souls, a full- length novel; according to Rankin, he wrote this brief but fully-realized piece first, then cannibalized part of it as a sub-plot for Dead Souls, "while altering the histories of the characters involved so that both can be read independently." Which is why American fans who haven't yet read Dead Souls will pick it up right after this one. Death Is Not the End is short enough to read on a shuttle flight and still have time for a nap. But like Rankin's other solid Rebus stories, it will stay with you even after you wake up. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

For readers unfamiliar with the blistering plots and language of Ian Rankin's longer works, this special edition novella is the perfect opportunity to get to know Rankin and his unforgettable creation, Inspector John Rebus. For longtime Rebus fans, it is an opportunity to follow him as he explores a subplot from his most recent outing, Dead Souls. When his high-school sweetheart calls him out of the blue, Rebus agrees to track down her missing son, who was last seen at a bar owned by some shady mob-linked gangsters. His pursuit takes him through an Edinburgh beyond the tartan tearooms and cobbled streets of the tourist brochures, a modern city boasting a variety of criminals and their victims. As Rebus contemplates the lurking immortality of his own city, Rankin offers readers page-turning suspense and astonishing literary grace.

3 out of 5 stars Novella retells novel subplot.......2000-07-13

Ian Rankin writes crisp, dark, atmospheric police procedurals set in Edinburgh featuring Inspector John Rebus, a brooding loner with occasional regrets, given to bottling his strong feelings. Rankin's unadorned, complexly nuanced writing, his ability to breathe life into characters as much with what is not said as what is, makes the series a particular stand-out.

Since his novella "Death Is Not the End," focuses on a subplot in Rankin's 1999 novel "Dead Souls," I expected a sequel. But as Rankin explains in a note at the end, the novella was written first. The story concerns a missing young man, 23 years old, the son of an old highschool girlfriend. The narrative follows Rebus' investigation over much the same time period as "Dead Souls," though Rankin extended his investigation in the novel. And there is a different subplot featuring crooked casino operators.

New readers, or those who missed "Dead Souls" will enjoy the journey into Edinburgh's seamy side - the grim amorality of those who make their living from "punters" - and Rebus' exploration of his own past and the choices that have made him who he is.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed Reader.......2000-05-30

I have read all of Rankin's novels and eagerly anticipated his latest. I was therefore doubly disappointed to receive a slight 70 page novella in the mail and then to discover that most of it was lifted from his last novel. Yes, a few pages are brand new, but that is hardly the point. I expected a new story and this was a rehash that appeared to have been hastily scribbled and patched together. For those who like Rankin, I'd give this one a miss and wait till he writes a real novel again.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2000-05-28

Ripoff! Seventy-three pages, at least forty of which are a direct lift from his last book. If you like Ian Rankin or have read his books in the past, don't waste your money on this.

    4 out of 5 stars Novella-length entry in a great crime series.......2000-05-25

If you've never read one of Ian Rankin's extraordinary John Rebus mysteries, "Death is Not the End" is a great introduction to the troubled Edinburgh detective and his dark world. On the surface, it's a police procedural (the Rebus books remind me of the also-excellent Bill James "Harpur and Iles" British police procedurals), but Rebus is such a loner, breaking out into his own investigations, that it's virtually a private detective novel as well. This imagery fits "Death is Not the End" especially well as the (intentional) echoes of Raymond Chandler and the theme of "vanishing"--from missing persons to long-lost youthful innocence--permeate Rankin's alcoholic, cigarette-addicted hero's search for the son of an old girlfriend. It's a quick read, but layered with such detail that this would make me want to read more Rebus mysteries even if I wasn't already a fan. I agree in part with the Kirkus Review above: this is pricey for a 74-page book, even a hardcover (this novella might have been better served by publishing it as trade paperback original). Rankin also re-used part of this plot for a recent novel ("Dead Souls"). Some may see this as a cheap excuse to get you to buy the same plot twice; I prefer to look at it as an interesting exercise in covering the same themes in a different manner and from different angles. It is by no means the best or definitive Rebus--one of the full-length novels must surely fill that role. Still, if you're a Rankin fan and completist you'll definitely want this one, and it makes a great introduction to suggest to your friends searching for a captivating crime series and a brilliant author.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling dark police drama.......2000-05-14

Scotland-based Detective Inspector John Rebus works two cases. One involves the disappearance of the twenty-three year old son of a woman John once loved. John's boss Chief Superintendent Watson assigns him the task of providing a special birthday present: evidence to send Topper Hamilton to jail. John considers both cases personal for different reasons.

DEATH IS NOT THE END is a compelling dark police drama that keeps reader interest from the first page to the last. The story line contains a complex plot and deep characterizations than normally found in a novella, but not at the level found in Ian Rankin's novels. Although a short work, it retains a powerful punch, leaving fans with the dilemma of considering the price tag.

The Taoist yogic discipline of Ba Gua is an internal form of the ancient art of kung fu--as are the much older t'ai chi and Xing I. Ba Gua is the most arcane and yogic of three sister arts--t'ai chi and Xing I are the others--and is distinguished by serpentine turning and circling momvements and its own internal energy exercises, Ba Gua Qi Gong.

1 out of 5 stars No Ba Gua Here.......2006-12-01

This is a very disappointing book. There is no Ba Gua in it. The first 60 pages is all mysticism, which is nonsense. There are 14 pages of walking the circle but not even a single palm change, much less anything more interesting. Then 20 pages of two two-man drills which have no ba gua to speak of. Then 20 pages of three self-defense demonstrations, one of which has what might be a ba gua turn, but a foolish one which turns your back to the opponent. That's it. The book is so bad I won't even bother selling it used here on Amazon. It's going in the trash.

        5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic book by a FANTASTIC Teacher.......2004-06-07

I have had the privilege of studying under Sifu Bracy a number of times in the 1990s. The man is a storehouse of knowledge in BOTH Bagua AND Hsing-I. His Hebei Hsing-I IS as smooth and flawless as his Baguazhang. To those who have written snippy little comments about this fine man, and about his wonderful treatise on this fascinating subject, I say: Shame On YOU!

It is very safe to make snide comments about someone you have never laid eyes on in real life, and that shows the low level of attainment you have reached thusfar in life. The content of the manual is just a minor glimpse into the wider scope of things in the wide world of Baguazhang and internal martial arts.

One cannot hope to catch the entire sum of the teaching in a short tome such as this one; but one can gather the beginnings
of greatness, and can aspire to reach the level of mastery that John Bracy has achieved in his personal quest.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, novice or expert, as this book provides a nice amount of content for a small price.

I hope that Sifu Bracy will grace the reading public with a meatier volume in the near future, and I also hope that the next volume will prvide a deeper insight into the [ractice and application of his life's work. I sincerely thank him for his efforts thus far, and welcome the day that I hear he has produced another fine manual for all the martial arts world to enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Education in the art of the martial........2003-10-24

This book is ok, but it lacks the theory and applications that are present in most other books.

Although, this book seems to be a the top of the list, other books carry way more weight in the area of education, counselling, and knowledge.

This is probably why people may dislike these comments. But it is the truth. If you want to look at other books, look at the martial arts list in my about me area.

        An addition:

Now, I know for many the area of teaching martial arts is a hard one. The ability to keep students for a business is very hard. So, Try just having another avenue for cash while the teaching of the martial art remains . . . just teaching martial arts. Charging students is not necessary. Instead, think like the old martial artists in China did. TRADE. Offer instruction in exchange for clothes, food, entertainment or custodial duties. This is the simple way.

2 out of 5 stars Reduce internal friction, thats what everyone says............2003-05-16

I have to agree with Victor K. Lin on this one.
I see people going 'oh yah' this is great, quite a few in fact.
Popularity is not an importance when it comes to real information.
I had the chance to read it at the book store, and it had information you could find anywhere. What people often dont tell you is that Bagua has many levels. If it is just elementary knowledge you seek, get this book.
Overview: I thought the book was really great at first, but then when I started skimming for the real information, or deeper information, I didnt find any. Basically the concept that was re-emphasised within the book was when moving or making transition reduce internal friction, or learn how to by practice.

I am sure glad I didn't waste money on it.

If you really want more information on pa kua chang, or bagua zhang, find a teacher or go to china.
Sometimes it is best to go to the roots of ba gua to learn more.
Bagua was created by Dong Hai-chuan and combined internal elements of taijiquan (tai chi), hsing-i, and taoist circle walking.

        Do research on these:

        ...

3 out of 5 stars Great history, superficial mechanics.......2003-03-24

I was mixed on this book. It presented a wonderful history and philosophical background for Hsing-Han Liu's Ba Gua, but the palms shown were the simplest levels (predominately qi gung), the applications were rudimentary (perhaps even watered down), and the mechanics simplistic. For a book that started to emphasize energy, proceeded to walking qi gung palms, a more appropriate finale would have been more sophisticated energy applications and/or development. Real insights from this incredibly experienced Ba Gua master would have been nice, and invaluable.

... if that isn't enough to make a person want this cookbook I don't know what it would take. You say you want more? Okay, I was born and brought up looking out over the San Francisco Bay and I consider it most beautiful, but this book made me want to visit the Chesapeake Bay area and get to know its rich history and its evidently warm and hospitable people, profiled in brief well-written essays in each chapter. Good black and white photographs of people and places, a nicely drawn map at the front of the book, and recipes that speak of tradition and family in the best American way like Mrs. Tovey's Chicken and Waffles with Gravy, and Tangy Peach Short Ribs of Beef. I can't imagine anyone would be sorry to have this book, once they opened the covers and began to read.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Rely on These Values.......2007-09-06

This book is a fantastic take-along for going to antique stores and garage sales and the like. It contains several helpful sections to help you identify patterns including a catagorized section of borders (birds, floral, art deco, etc.) and a shape guide which is primarily useful when looking for plates and serving pieces. All of the photos of actual pieces are in color. This book also contains several patterns that Gene Florence's Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass does not.

One thing about this book that needs to be mentioned is the large discrepency in value for many pieces between the Warman's guide and Florence's guide. I don't know if this is because this edition is already 3 years old or what. You may feel like you are getting an incredible deal when you are actually not. This book also doesn't contain much information on each pattern except for the basics and it doesn't have much good information on reproductions.

This is a great field guide for glass, but it's good to have a back-up, more recent guide for values.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best field guide I've ever seen.......2006-02-17

I love this book and recommend it to any collector of depression glass, especially if you are anovice. The thumbnail guides are easy to use and great for identifying just about any pattern. This has become my bible for identifying and valuing auction buys and yard sale finds. I hope Warmans considers another volume to acccomodate some of the patterns not covered in detail in this book.

5 out of 5 stars I use it all the time!!!.......2003-12-20

I purchased this book about 3 months ago and have almost worn the cover off of it already. I like the thumbnails in the beginning of the book that help you quickly identify the pattern. Although the photos are in black and white, I feel that I am able to identify the patterns quite easily. It is also small enough to fit into my purse or coat pocket when I go to auctions. I think I am getting a much better grasp of various patterns by using this book. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a take-along book. I would also recommend having accesss to Warman's regular edition of Depression Glass for further reference.

1 out of 5 stars Very confusing paperweight (if it was thick enough).......2004-05-14

After reading Tomoko Fuse's excellent book on Unit Origami I wanted to get a little farther into it. This books seemed a good place to start. It is not.

On the plus side, there are many, many models in the book. Also, there seems to be some fundamental "theory" that generates them, which would allow a great deal of flexibility and range of design to anyone who used it.

On the negative side, I can't for the life of me figure out how to make even a single model. The whole first 3/4 of the book consists of things like this: A line drawing of a polyhedron labelled, for instance, "Rhombicuboctahedron" and then a photo of an origami pice that doesn't seem related. Finally on page 40 (of ~75) there's a second on "Model Construction". It turns out you need paper in multiple sizes (1.6875 inches is one of them) to make almost all the models. And it still doesn't explain just how to put the units together or even how to make the units (other than "this is how to make a flat hexagon" type of instructions)!

There's also some kind of method or technique called "gyroscoping" that I can't figure out.

I would give this 0 stars, but the other review is so positive that I feel sure that, if one could penetrate the dense prose sections or understand the seemingly-content-free main body, great things could be done.

5 out of 5 stars Origami for the serious Geometrician.......2003-04-23

This is a book designed for constructing geometric models using small folded units or modules. A large number of polyhedra are explained in this volume.

The beginning of the book (first 50 pages or so), talks about the different classes of figures and give detailed information about each figure, including photographs.

There is then a short section devoted to creating different shapes of paper from squares (triangles, pentagons, hexagons, etc.).

Finally there is a section for folding the individual units themselves. Each unit is capable of connecting to the others.

There is an interesting feature that I would like to see in other unit books. After a particularly well-detailed unit, there was a one-page summary of the folding thus making it easier on the folder who does not memorize the unit and just needs a guide while folding the requisite number of units.

This is a well laid out book that does an excellent job of covering the material and achieves is goal. But this is not a book for all folders. It is aimed at the serious folder of geometric solids.

The typical low price from Dover makes this an easy volume to add to one's origami or geometry library.

5 out of 5 stars A Charming Look At Life In The Age Of Horses.......2001-03-21

Some photo-essays have a cinematic effect. You start to forget that you are leafing through the pages of a book and fall into a world that is at once unfamiliar yet somehow known. As the images pass by you keep hoping that the show will get even better and if you are lucky, sometimes it does. As with French Farmhouses And Cottages which reads like a great movie and kept me surprised with its eccentricity and charm right to the last page. Cottages and out-buildings like these are each absolutely unique and all are situated in settings that epitomise the notion of living in creative harmony with your surroundings. If for no other reason than the structures are always built of the materials that comprise the land of occupancy.

The photo captions in French Farmhouses And Cottages are superb and highlight the type of construction in evidence, the purpose of each building economically in the life of the community, and the building materials that were used and why. A lengthy section of text which is entitled 'Introduction' would better be described as a comprehensive review of rural life in France during an era when the horse provided the defining reality for all economic activity in agricultural areas of the country. Extensive discussion in this well-written and highly informative essay focuses specifically on building practises on farm steads as well as planning strategies for setting up the working farm. Materials which were readily available for building and roofing are given consideration as well since local stone, clay and wood were utilised for French farmhouse construction as represented in this volume. But the setting for the creative labours which made use of those materials, rural France a hundred years ago, produced the inspiration. The synthesis of the two frequently defies imagination.

                      Book Description
