                    Book Description

The New Deal for Young People, introduced in April 1998, has been a flagship of the Labour Government. This book is the first comprehensive and authoritative analysis of the New Deal and examines how far the programme has succeeded in responding to the diversity of conditions in local labour markets across the UK.The book argues that profound differences in local labour market conditions have exerted a telling influence on the New Deal 's achievements. It proposes that contemporary labour market policy should not only be based on theories and models of the national economy and of individual behaviour, but that policy design also needs to recognise the importance of the local and regional labour market contexts which shape its viability and outcomes. By situating policy in this way, the book not only examines how workfare has been put in place in the UK, but also puts place into workfare.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but not great.......2003-08-11

OK, it is a good story book, but lacks central focus. Ralph needed a better editor who could sit down and help him focus more. Some of the stories are great and in some cases would make a great book in themselves, but the writing style takes it out of the realm of serious history and relegates it to populist history; very enjoyable, but still populist history, which is what I think Ralph was shooting for.

Having read Tank Sergeant I knew this was not War and Peace. No one who is not a tanker or in the CAV will relate to his point of view well, making it a book with a limited audience, but one that tankers and anyone interested in cavalry and its history should read.

Armor, cavalry and the concepts involved in this book are real, very real and current. Cavalry, as demostrated time and time again in this book and history, is a mindset, not a set of hardware or type of vehicle. From the battle of Kadesh to the 1st Cavalry in Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq, cavalry has led the way and provided the point of the spear. Ralph Zumbro has made a valiant attempt at writing a history of the modern armored cavalry and we should applaud him for that.

Read it, but don't expect it to be a scholarly work!

1 out of 5 stars A jumbled and mangled text.......2000-12-05

Unlike the previous reviews, I found this book a great disappointment. The author's writing style is horrific, meandering about without focus all too frequently. Early in the book he makes reference to the military origins of the term "fifth columns", but is way off the mark in his reference; the "fifth column" was first used in the Spainish Civil War, when four Nationalist thrusts were aimed at Madrid, and the Nationalists sympathizers in the capital fought Republicans from within (hence the "fifth" column attacking)... This jumbled syntax is evident throughout the first half of the book, which is honestly as far as I could force myself to read.

5 out of 5 stars Iron thinking from an Iron Warrior named Zumbro.......2000-08-10

The point of writing a book on Armored warfare development is to LEARN SOMETHING we can apply today. Ralph Zumbro is a COMBAT veteran from Vietnam who fought in Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) and has a mission, knows it and then goes about enlightening us all. He begins by tracing the fact through history that man has always used a form of armored protection coupled with a mobility form to gain positional advantage. His book is priceless because he realizes this is the true of mobile, mounted essence, not ego-gratifying tank duels which wrongly pre-occupies the current generation of tankers who should refer to themselves as a practitioners of the sound traditional war-form of Cavalry. Battlefield functions stay the same, though the war forms will change as the technology changes.

Zumbro shows that throughout history the essence of Cavalry is to gain a mobility differential and exploit it to gain a battlefield effect---he shows how the Russians actually used horse Cavalry in WWII in conjunction with armored vehicles to swarm and overwhelm Germans who on foot were at a disadvantage. The Russians had their infantry in adequate numbers to effect battles positively (refer to Bolger's book Death Ground: American Infantry in Battle) ride their tanks (they do this today in Chechnya); something we refuse to do--we insist on moving infantry around in Bradley machine gun tanks which require a 3-man crew to man and can only carry 7 dismounts and wonder why with this overhead cost we end up only with a handful of "security guards for tanks" and not the decisive infantry force that can maneuver and take ground apart from their armored mounts. Zumbro shows how the Vietnames created the M113 ACAV--an all-terrain tracked AFV with gunshields to maneuver at will and dominate the swampy rice paddy terrains of Vietnam. A vehicle that dominated the fight in Vietnam and could carry a full 9-13 man Infantry squad. He then concludes with AFVs combined with helicopters for an Air-Mech combination beginning with the Soviets in 1978 Ogaden war and in a final futuristic chapter written in Tom Clancy style. The point of this all is to re-energize Armor branch to its true function--as Iron, Kevlar, Chobham Cavalry not the "land battleship" dueling madness that pervades the ranks today. The point is to win battles with armored maneuver, not duel other tanks so you can paint a "kill mark" on your gun tube.

To do this, he uses an interesting and entertaining style to motivate and enlighten rather than a dry scholarly approach that would bore everyone to death and in the end fail to sway the defeatists and nay-sayers stuck in their ways regardless of how many facts, battle won and lessons learned are arrayed in their presence. His book is full of important technotactical details which I'm constantly referring to to solve today's problems. He is an Iron thinker. There simply is no other book that better presents the truths U.S. Army Armor branch must face if it wants to be a relevent player on the 21st century battlefield.

5 out of 5 stars Armor Is The Way To Go.......2000-03-07

This book gives a very good over view of the history of tanks and their tactics. I found the book to be a very good starting piont for people who would like to begin a study in armor tactics.

Mr. Zumbro was a tanker before he became a historian. The perspectives represented in this book are therefore different than than you might find in conventional history books. Also, his style is not fully developed, and the book alternates from a first person perspective to historical facts in a few chapters. Particular emphasis is paid to smaller battles and wars which are mainly forgotten or ignored by other historians. All in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the development of mobile armored forces, but not as the only source of information.

                            Book Description

                            Introduction

The Baltic States - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - are far from being the grey, Soviet-scarred republics that many people imagine them to be. For a start, they're graced by three of the most enthralling national capitals in Eastern Europe, each highly individual in character and boasting an extraordinary wealth of historic buildings, as well as an expanding and energetic nightlife and cultural scene. Outside the cities lie great swathes of unspoiled countryside, with deep, dark pine forests punctuated by stands of silver birch, calm blue lakes, and a wealth of bogs and wetlands, all bordered by literally hundreds of kilometres of silvery beach. Peppering the landscape are villages that look like something out of the paintings of Marc Chagall, their dainty churches and wonky timber houses leaning over narrow, rutted streets. As you'd expect from a region periodically battered by outside invaders, there are dramatic historical remains aplenty, from the grizzled ruins of the fortresses thrown up by land-hungry Teutonic Knights in the thirteenth century, to the crumbling military installations bequeathed by Soviet occupiers some 700 years later.

Although the half century spent under Soviet rule has left Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians with a great deal in common, they're each fiercely proud of their separate status, and tend to regard the "Baltic States" label as a matter of geographical convenience rather than a real indicator of shared culture.

The Latvians and Lithuanians do at least have similar origins, having emerged from the Indo-European tribes who settled the area some two thousand years before Christ, and they still speak closely related languages. The Estonians, on the other hand, have lived here at least three millennia longer and speak a Finno-Ugric tongue that has more in common with Finnish than with the languages of their next-door neighbours. In historical and religious terms, it's the Lithuanians that are a nation apart - having carved out a huge, independent empire in medieval times, they then converted to the Catholic faith in order to cement an alliance with Poland. In contrast, the Latvians and Estonians were conquered by Teutonic Knights in the thirteenth century and subjected to a German-speaking feudal culture that had become solidly Protestant by the mid-1500s. From the eighteenth-century onwards, the destinies of the three Baltic peoples began to converge, with most Latvians and Estonians being swallowed up by the Tsarist Empire during the reign of Peter the Great and the Lithuanians following several decades later. Despite their common predicament, no great tradition of Baltic cooperation emerged, and when the three Baltic States became independent democracies in 1918-1920 - only to lose their independence to the USSR and Nazi Germany two decades later - they did so as isolated units rather than as allies.

The one occasion on which the Baltic nations truly came together was in the 1988-1991 period, when a shared sense of injustice at what the Soviet Union had done to them produced an outpouring of inter-Baltic solidarity. At no time was this more evident than when an estimated two million people joined hands to form a human chain stretching from Tallinn to Vilnius on 23 August, 1989, the fiftieth anniversary of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact - the cynical Soviet-Nazi carve-up that had brought the curtain down on inter-war Baltic independence. Baltic fellow feeling became less pronounced in the post-Soviet period when each country began to focus on its own problems, and it's now the differences - rather than the similarities - between the Baltic peoples that most locals seem eager to impress upon visitors.

How different they actually are remains open to question, with both locals and outsiders resorting to a convenient collection of clichés whenever the question of national identity comes under discussion: the Lithuanians are thought to be warm and spontaneous, the Estonians distant and difficult to know, while the Latvians belong somewhere in between. In truth there are plenty of ethnographic similarities linking the three nationalities. A century ago the majority of Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians lived on isolated farmsteads or small villages, and a love for the countryside, coupled with a contemplative, almost mystical feeling for nature, still runs in the blood. Shared historical experiences - especially the years of Soviet occupation and the sudden re-imposition of capitalism that followed it - have produced people with broadly similar outlooks and, wherever you are in the Baltic States, you'll come across older people marked by fatalism and lack of initiative and younger generations characterized by ambition, impatience and adaptability to change.

The Baltic peoples today are also united by gnawing concerns about whether such relatively small countries can preserve their distinct identities in a rapidly globalizing world. The rush to join NATO and the EU has been broadly welcomed in all three countries, not least because membership of both organizations promises protection against any future resurgence of Russian power. However, locals remain keenly aware that they can only be bit-part players in any future Europe. Lithuania has a population of 3.8 million, Latvia 2.3 million, and Estonia only 1.4 million - hardly the stuff of economic or cultural superpowers. Combined with this is a looming fear of population decline in countries that share some of the lowest birth rates in the world. Such anxieties are particularly strong in Estonia and Latvia, where the indigenous populations are in many towns and cities outnumbered by other ethnic groups - particularly Russians - who were encouraged to move here during the Soviet period. Only 55 percent of Latvia's inhabitants are ethnic Latvians, and the figure in Estonia, at 65 percent, isn't much better. Eager to immerse themselves in the new Europe and yet profoundly concerned with the need to preserve their national uniqueness, the Baltic States find themselves at a challenging crossroads.

The Rough Guides are usually written in a colorful, well-researched manner that makes them a joy to have along in order to learn about the places you are visiting while exploring the area, and this book delivers along those lines. Also true to Rough Guide form, however, the book lacks important details regarding transportation: how many buses, how often, where to buy tickets, best routes, etc.

The Baltic countries have experienced a major boom in tourism since EU membership in May 2004, and hotel rooms are booked far in advance. As such, Rough needs to expand their listings to include a larger percentage of hotels. In August 2004 we found all the hotels listed in the Rough Guide fully booked in all 3 Baltic capitals! Admittedly, we did not plan very far ahead, and to be fair to this book, we did not find a major guide with more complete hotel listings.

The Listings section in each chapter also provides a handy reference. In general, however, Rough should expand this section to make it really useful, as listings are a bit limited. They should also start adding sections such as: Cyber cafes with digital photo downloads, Where to buy a GSM SIM chip, and similar sections for the digital traveler, to really make the listings complete.

In each major destination, this book includes walking tours with some interesting information on buildings, churches and monuments, intertwined with history and cultural observations that makes for enjoyable reading and walks. We were glad to have this book along.

                                Book Description

The beginnings of modern design occurred in Renaissance Italy, which first fostered the concept that all the arts are based on universal principles of design. As the medieval separation of crafts broke down, Renaissance painters, sculptors, and architects created designs in a variety of media to be carried out by others. With the separation of design from actual execution, drawing became the critical means of communicating between artist and artisan. The promotion of artist as designer and the rise of drawing as an independent art form were inextricably intertwined. Design (the foundation of art) and drawing (the cornerstone of design) were so intimately linked as to share the same designation--disegno. In introducing audiences to the origins of modern design, this catalog and the exhibitions associated with it seek to elevate Renaissance drawings for decorative arts objects to a new level commensurate with the fine arts.

5 out of 5 stars great book for any gardener.......2000-08-29

I got this book as a birthday present because I like to garden. I read this book over the summer in about one and a half weeks by reading for about an hour each morning. I learned lots of new stuff about all kinds of plants that I didn't know before. The short sections which are only about 4 pages long make this easy to read whenever you need too. This is a great book for all of you gardeners!

A friend bought me this book as a joke but I read it and found it very good. I have been a gardener my whole life but it is still a nice read and can teach even the gardener a few new techniques. It has a very nice list of very easy to care for plants great for those that are beginners and afraid of killing everything.

This is a great story of what determined men can achieve with severely limited resources. Much has been written on Colditz Castle, the men who were imprisoned there and the few who escaped. I visited the castle in 1999, and what I saw confirms the stories in the book. This book is great reading for those who prefer real adventures and exploits to fiction.

5 out of 5 stars The tireless efforts of POWs for freedom........2002-12-06

On June 23 1943 the author, Jack Champ, was marched into the German prisoner-of-war camp designated Oflag IVC, these days better known as Colditz Castle. Colditz was Germany's seemingly escape-proof castle prison, where hundreds of the most determined and resourceful prisoners of World War II tirelessly carried out an unending campaign to achieve the seemingly impossible - freedom. By the end of the war, twenty Australians had spent time in Colditz, and this book looks at life in the ancient castle specifically from their point of view. Colditz was a very special camp - the guards outnumbered the prisoners, and the castle was floodlit at night. Initially the Germans boasted that Colditz Castle was escape-proof, but they were wrong. By the end of the war, there had been more escapes from Colditz than any prison of comparable size during both world wars. Jack Champ was a reluctant prisoner who took part in two of the most spectacular mass escapes of the war. This book describes in vivid detail how these indomitable and resourceful Australian servicemen tried, and at times succeeded, in turning dreams of escape into reality. Colin Burgess has interviewed many of the survivors and carried out extensive research to create this gripping account of the full story - from tense days in the care of the French Underground through to the only recently resolved fight for proper compensation.
