Stone Barrington is caught between a clever con man-who's just become his client-and a beautiful prosecutor in this stylish thriller in the bestselling series. Two-Dollar Bill delivers all the storytelling twists and whip-smart banter readers have come to love in Stuart Woods's thrillers. In this latest, Stone Barrington, the suave Manhattan cop-turned-lawyer, is back on his home turf facing down a brilliant Southern flimflam man. The fun-and action-begins with what Stone believes will be a quiet dinner with his ex-partner, Dino, but they are interrupted by Billy Bob, a filthy rich, smooth-talkin' Texan, who strolls in and parks himself at their table. He's in town ""to make money,"" he says, unwrapping his wad of rare two-dollar bills, and in need of an attorney-namely, Stone-though he won't say why or when such representation will be necessary. As they leave the restaurant, however, an unknown assailant shoots at Stone and his cohorts-and the wily Southerner has spread his two-dollar bills around to everyone like confetti. Against his better judgment, Stone offers Billy Bob a safe haven for the night but almost immediately begins to suspect that he's made several precipitous misjudgments-for the slippery out-of-towner has gone missing and someone has been found dead-in Stone's town house no less. Stone is now caught between a beautiful federal prosecutor and a love from his past, a con man with more aliases than hairs on his head, and a murder investigation that could ruin them all.
Customer Reviews:
Very Fair.......2007-09-08
Not one of his best efforts. I thought the book dragged in places and then picked up with a decent but hurried ending.
A formula within a formula with no way out.......2007-07-17
I've read everything by Woods and love his fast-paced dialog and his descriptions of how the rich get things done. But most of his books over the last 4-5 years have well, sucked. They start out great, move fast, engage you like a roller coaster at first, but then he seems to just slap any ridiculous ending together to get it over with. It seems he's making it up as he goes versus having a complete thought in the first place.
Now that he routinely mixes characters across series, they all seem to be chapters of each other and are instantly forgettable. And even though this is beach fare and I've taken them from the library, I hate feeling duped by a really lousy ending.
I think Woods would really like to write Hollywood action blockbuster but Stone as 007 is silly. His descriptions of people hanging from helicopters, huge explosions, etc, just don't cut it. I think I'll only read the first two thirds of his future books and leave the endings to my own imagination.
Two dollar bill about a dollar short.......2007-01-09
Woods is getting to be too much of a formula writer. Little mystery; much out of any recent Stone Barrington Book reads as if author wants to have Barrington be some kind of aspriational hero for readers. Woods' earlier books far superior. If I buy any more of Woods' books, it will only be in paperback. Not worth the hard cover price.
Another slick Stone Barrington novel.......2006-12-26
Picking up a Stone Barrington novel is like visiting an old friend. Namely, a slick, slightly upper class friend who has almost everything.
Two Dollar Bill introduces a character named Bullit, who is a rich investor from Texas. Stone asks for Bullit to stay at his house, and the next morning, a call girl winds up dead in Stone's guest room.
From there, Stone is hurled into figuring out who Bullit is, and what his scheme is, ending with a little suprise at the end.
All in all, a fast moving, engaging plot as one would suspect no less from a Stuart Woods Stone Barrington novel.
Going through the motions--but very quickly.......2006-12-15
Stuart Woods started out something of a novelist. His first real fiction book, "Chiefs", had pretensions to being a real novel, dealing (as it did) with three generations of law enforcement in a small town, and the criminal who lived and killed in the town right under everyone's nose. Since he's gotten to writing series, though, he's gotten much more formulaic, and it certainly looks as if he's given up any pretense of doing anything other than entertaining his readers in the here and now. There's no allusions to literature here: pop culture rules.
This time around, Woods's chief protagonist, Stone Barrington, is arm-twisted into taking as a client a loud-mouthed Texan named Billy Bob Barnstormer. The minute Billy Bob walks onto the pages of the book, you know he's trouble. Stone knows it too, but he is too courteous and friendly to avoid allowing the guy to kill a call girl in Stone's guest bedroom. He then plants a gun on Stone, and does other things that swiftly lead to Stone having to flee to various locations in and out of New York City, shooting various bad guys, engaging in chase scenes, etc.
This book is rather predictable. There's almost no atmosphere, character development, or other extraneous content. The whole of the story is plot, and there's little else. If someone were to develop this as a movie, it might actually have potential: actors could provide character, background could provide atmosphere. As it is, the characters go to the same restaurant repeatedly, and the owner's cranky. That's what passes for atmosphere here.

Novel of the author's year in Viet Nam.
Customer Reviews:
A great perspective of one "grunt's" time in Vietnam.......2003-07-21
This book is an account of the time spent by Soiset during his tour in Vietnam. Although the names have been changed, the events that are told are real. His son was the motivation for writing the book. He wanted to have documentation of his experiences so that his son may better understand what he went through.
He begins the story with the jungle training he received in South America. Soon after he completes his training, he is in Vietnam commanding his first platoon. I have seen several war movies, but Soiset covers details of war that I had never considered. The Vietnam solider had more to worry about than just the Viet Cong; the jungle was almost just as dangerous.
I practically could not put the book down once he started his service in the field. There is one page in particular that I don't think I'll ever forget. At the top of the page I was laughing, but by the bottom of the page I felt sorrow. That must have been just a sample of the emotional rollercoaster that Vietnam was for many vets.
Midway through the book Soiset is taken out of the field and put into a desk job. I was a bit disappointed and afraid that the rest of the book would be boring. I could not be more wrong. Who knew that Army logistics could be so interesting?
Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is easy and entertaining to read. It should also elicit a bit more respect for America's vets.

The D.A. refuses to reopen the high-profile case, but Marty fears that the real killer will strike again. With her career on the line and lives at stake, she must rely on her own moral compass, legal savvy, and gut instinct as she matches wits with a twisted killer.

"Rose Connors brings a fresh voice, a dynamic storytelling power, and a passion for the law to her compelling crime fiction debut. Martha ""Marty"" Nickerson is a lawyer who truly loves her job. As an assistant D.A. for Massachusetts's Barnstable County, which includes all the small towns on Cape Cod, she speaks for the victims of crime and their families, and sees the system as a means for doing right. The case of Manuel Rodriguez is a prime example. Rodriguez is accused of brutally murdering a college student, a kind young man who had a bright future. Marty has worked hard on this case; as the mother of a teenage son, she identifies with the murdered boy's grieving parents. Her case against Rodriguez is so solid that even public defender Harry Madigan -- the champion of the Cape's underdogs -- expects a conviction. And, on Memorial Day, exactly a year after the crime, the verdict comes in: guilty as charged. Justice prevails. Then, with Rodriguez behind bars, another body turns up in disturbingly similar circumstances. Did Marty and her colleagues target the wrong man? Her supervisor -- Geraldine Schilling, who aspires to be the county's first female D.A. -- refuses to reopen such a high-profile case. Why should she? The prosecutors played by the rules and won big. But Marty fears that the real killer will strike again. With her career on the line and lives at stake, Marty must rely on her own moral compass, legal savvy, and gut instinct as she matches wits with a twisted killer. The system itself is on trial as Marty tries to serve Justice, not merely the Law. Only an author with years of courtroom experience could add such riveting authenticity to a novel that asks important questions and provides surprising answers. Rose Connors's Absolute Certainty introduces a new crime-writing star. "
Customer Reviews:
Excellent insider legal procedural.......2006-01-11
A fresh take on the criminal justice system from a true insider with a strong voice. This is an auspicious first novel by a savvy, experienced, trial attorney. Rose Connors has got it all really right: from her tough but vulnerable protagonist, Cape Cod ADA Marty Nickerson, and her completely believable relationship with an ex-husband and a teen-aged son, to a small select cast of interesting supporting characters.
We're in Barnstable County on Cape Cod when the novel opens and Nickerson is deep in the final stages of a rock-solid case against a vicious killer. The case is clean, the evidence huge, even the Public Defender agrees. All seems eminently satisfactory and the jury finds the man, Manuel Rodrigez, guilty. But then another body, is found under disturbingly similar circumstances to that of the first. Evidence points to the same killer. Copycat? Faced with a politically astute boss working hard to become the first female DA in the county, Nickerson can't get Rodrigez' case reexamined. She goes way out on a limb in fairness to her own sense of justice and right. What happens next is surprising.
We have a fine sense of place in this novel and the characters seem to be completely comfortable. They belong in these settings. One's sense of credibility is never strained beyond the breaking point. The dialog is crisp and centered. The pace is measured and the structure of the novel is taut. There is a relentless feeling, particularly in the last half of the book, which seems to take hold of the reader in a way that many novels are unable to exert. Add a handsome cover, good production and careful editing to a thoughtful, well-written provocative novel, and you have an outstanding debut.
Don't Waste Your Time.......2004-06-20
There are lots of great legal mysteries and thrillers, but this isn't one of them. The characters (especially Marty and Geraldine) are one-dimensional stereotypes, and their situations are trite and boring (for example, Marty's trouble with her ex-husband over their kid is not exactly an original subplot). The prose is dull and unimaginative, and I had to force myself to finish this book. At the end, I felt cheated because certain things had not been sufficiently emphasized to give the reader a fair chance to guess the ending. There are a few insights into the legal system, but others (notably Grisham) do it way better. The setting will be a draw for some readers, but there are many other more interesting and creative novels with the Cape Cod locale. Final verdict: don't waste your time with this book.
Am I expecting too much?.......2004-05-13
I purchased this book based on the positive reviews published here, but after having read it, I have to strongly disagree with them. This book is largely filled with completely irrelevant information. Most of the writing is incidental to the plot and does not develop the story in any meaningful way. I found myself speed reading page after page of verbiage that seemed primarily intended to fill enough space to create a book of adequtate length. The entire meat of the story could have been significantly condensed, but then it would have been a short story rather than a novel. This type of writing is common - the author will go into (seemingly) endless detail about place descriptions or character relationships that are in no way central (or even peripheral) to the story. In the hands of a more talented writer, this information would be artfully woven into the fabric of the story to make it essential. Unfortunately, in the case of this book (as in many others), it just sits there like a dead weight taking up space.
Additionally, the denouement comes completely out of nowhere. The culprit is utterly undeveloped throughout the novel, and barely even merits a mention until the end. I really didn't care enough about any of the characters to try to determine who the killer might be; nevertheless, I have to say I was shocked by the killer's eventual revelation simply because he was almost a nonentity in the novel. I guess this is the deus ex machina of suspense writing - make the killer unguessable by never mentioning him until the end!
WOW!!!!!!Well - done!.......2003-08-17
Interestingly, I met Rose Connors at a mystery author booksigning at a little bookstore in Brewster, MA. She was there with Philip Craig whose work I have read and enjoyed. He strongly suggested Ms. Connors work so I picked it up and looked it over. On the cover is a brief review by Perri O'Shuaghnessy whose latest book was my beach read at the time! I happen to love mystery stories. Well, let me tell you, this book is GREAT! It is so well written, the characters come to life. the story is fast paced - a real page turner!! I was actually reading the book while the RED SOX game was on and I am a huge Red Sox fan!! I just could not put this book down! I cannot wait to read Ms. Connors latest work.
A Summer Mystery with Panache.......2003-07-22
Being a summer resident of the Cape, I am used to light and questionably plotted Cape mysteries. Rose Connors uses her legal background, and knowledge of local lore to ensnare the reader into an exciting murder mystery. The characters are well developed, and the reader grows to care about them. The plot has rewarding twists and turns and keeps the reader very interested. The funeral scene is particularly well written and touching. Knowing that another novel with the same main characters is now available, makes one anxious to see what becomes of them.

Customer Reviews:
This was an incredible book, of an incredible series........2000-04-02
Jessica Amanda Salmonson is one of the two best Fantasy authors I have encountered in my entire, very prolific, reading career.
Thousand Shrine Warrior is the third book in the Tomoe Gozen trilogy (The first two being Tomoe Gozen, and The Golden Naginata, with the currently-in-print Disfavored Hero being the reprint/uncut version of Tomoe Gozen) and it does an unthinkably breathtaking job of continuing the already entrancing series at a height that is as complex, beautiful, and thought-provoking as the first two books.
I got a lot out of this book. Characters in this book affected me, and I have had insights because of this book. Far apart from her brilliance in writing a complex, engrossing, female-positive (at a time when having a female heroine was unthinkable!) fantasy novel set in an exaustively-researched mythological Japan, Salmonson is also an incredible writer in the literary sense as well. I cannot imagine anyone taking the effort to acquire this book and this series and not being esctatic about the decision after reading them. In all sincerity; this author may rekindle your faith in and love for the Fantasy Genre.

Not enough information listed - saturated, trans fats and sugars not in here.......2007-08-11
While this book has most of the ingredients we're supposed watching, it's a far cry from being "The Book that counts it all" as it touts on the front cover - it doesn't even have sugar content and the fat content doesn't even tell you how much of it is saturated (or trans). How can you leave those things out and call it complete???? Very disappointing. Did ANYBODY write a real guide that breaks down calories, fats (saturated, etc) cholesterol, carbs, sodium, protein, and fiber??? This is the 4th book I've gotten and NONE are complete. I'm wasting money trying to find just one that REALLY is complete and will be useful.
Outdated! This is important.............2007-01-05
This WAS an excellent reference at one time. Folks, food information needs to be kept up to date. Basically, any food almanac needs to be updated every 2 years at least! Brands change, food are improved, ingredients are added or removed. Foods get better and foods get worse.
This book was comprehensive. Not now. Many of the brands in the book have changed. Some have MUCH less fat, fewer calories, etc.
If they would release a new edition, I would consider it. This is going to be returned to Amazon. There are plenty of others.
My best advice, go to your local book store, peruse and review a few, then buy a CURRENT selection you like best from Amazon since you will likely save money!
My food values reference.......2006-07-20
A great little reference! I have been using it for years. I, and my friends are impressed with its contents.
Ignore the naysayer's comment about redundancy, there are so many brands, I think it is good to get as many as possible in the book even though it may seem repetitive. Most would ignore all the information had they not found their exact brand.
I do wish Ms. Netzer would update the edition with current brands and formulations. I cannot afford (or take a deduction) to keep up with Bowes & Chruch's periodic offerings.
An Awesome, Dependable Encyclopedia of Basic Food Values.......2006-07-12
I too, purchased this volume many years ago. Diet intentions come, and go, but I know that if I want to be aware of how many calories a basic, pork cutlet has in fat, and calories, for example, this is the book I turn to.
No book of this type, can be all things to all people. There are several volumes, covering the new packaged foods-which come and go. And if your going to remain informed, you have to continue to buy the revised volumes. the food pool changes.
For the money-in any case-I believe I'm getting value, in owning seveal volumes. I understand I need to spend a small amt of money to have the vital information I have to have about food, being a diagnosed diabetic for several years now. And I'm excited to know that connie's landmark book is still available, so I can buy a replacement for the orig volume I still have.
Timeless Resource Guide.......2003-05-22
I purchased this book many years ago, and have used it continuously! It is the definative resource guide for those of us who want take control of our lives. Know what you're eating, the calories, nutrients, minerals, etc. so that you can make choices for yourself.
A must for EVERY home. A wonderful gift for those you love.
Book Description
Fiona Smith shows you how to make some of the best dim sum -- and lots of modern variations. She has included dishes from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan, as well as from China -- all ready for you to recreate when you entertain. Fiona's ideas are based on tried-and-true, easy-to-prepare recipes that she uses in her own catering business. The emphasis is on lots of flavor, finger-food-sized morsels, and cooking methods that are simple enough for home cooks to manage. Just one or two of these recipes will make all the difference to your next party.
Customer Reviews:
Fusion cuisine at its most delicious.......2007-08-31
Every recipe comes with an artfully arranged photo as background, showing what the recipe will (ideally) look like when you're done with it. The photos are gorgeous and wonderful to look at, and sometimes aid you in figuring out exactly what the author means when she gives an instruction on how to put something together. (Not that her instructions are confusing, but sometimes pictures can say things that are difficult to get across through words.)
The recipes are fairly simple and short, and simply arranged. Ingredients are nicely separated from directions, and directions are divided into short paragraphs. Each recipe comes with a brief paragraph commenting on some aspect of the recipe or the tradition behind it.
The book includes a very brief introduction to the idea of dim sum-this really isn't an introductory text, and would not be best as a first dim sum book unless the cook using it is experienced and confident in the kitchen in general. (Ellen Leong Blonder's Dim Sum: The Art of Chinese Tea Lunch makes a great starting text.)
Recipes range from "crisp vegetables with roasted salt and pepper dip" (read: tempura), to sweet and sour pickled vegetables, wilted bean sprout and peanut salad, salmon and Asian pesto packages, mussels with egg noodles and black bean sauce, shrimp and scallion fritters (which are "based on a Mexican original" with "a Chinese twist"), little Szechuan chicken steamed buns, steamed dumplings with kaffir lime and lemongrass, peking-style duck pancake wraps, and a decent spread of dips and sauces-as well as other dishes.
The recipes don't call for a lot of unusual ingredients. We can find many of them at our local generic grocery store (and it doesn't have a lot of odd stuff), and sometimes substitutions are suggested. For example, when making sticky rice in banana leaves with chicken skewers, it's suggested that you could use foil instead of banana leaves.[...]can be a good source of some harder-to-find ingredients such as lemongrass.
The recipes come out uniformly delicious and delightful in our experience. The chile beef wontons are, so far, our favorite of the various fried wonton recipes we've made. The tiny pork, tofu, and broccoli spring rolls are delicious. The mango wontons with lime sauce were to die for. And this book is one of the best sources, among the dim sum books we have, for sauces and dips. There are only four of them (technically there are a few additional ones to be found among the other recipes), but they're perfect: a sweet chile sauce that goes well with almost anything, plum sauce, soy and ginger sauce, and a sweet and sour sesame sauce that's even better than the sweet chile sauce (and beats every other "sweet and sour" sauce we've tried so far, hands down).
Fiona Smith's approach to dim sum may be slightly unorthodox, but if you enjoy dim sum in specific or small appetizer foods in general, it's well worth a look. The recipes are fresh and creative, fairly easy, and absolutely delicious!
"Dim sum?" Hardly........2006-07-21
From the title of this book one would expect to find real dim sum recipes inside. Instead, most of the recipes are Asian-inspired finger food, which is not at all the same thing. Dim sum is a Chinese food, not a general Asian-ish type of cuisine. To call these recipes "dim sum" is almost as inaccurate as calling French hor d'oevres "dim sum" simply because they are small, bite-sized treats.
I might come across as a bit pedantic here, but this is not simply a matter of semantics. If the author had used a more accurate title such as "Asian Finger Food" I would not have lowered my rating by 2 stars. The actual recipes are good and certainly creative, but they do not fit the title of the book.
Bottom line: if you are looking for true, traditional dim sum recipes, look elsewhere. There are better books on the topic. If you are thinking of getting this book, know ahead of time what you are getting and you will not be disappointed, because this is a good recipe book.
Little Heart's Delight.............2005-06-07
Beautiful little book with a treasure of recipes. Dim sum translates from the Chinese as "heart's delight". Tiny dishes that make up the great yum cha lunches served in Chinese
Restaurants. Yum cha means drink tea. Dim sum are usually, little bits of deliciously seasoned foods wrapped in a delicate dough and either steamed, boiled or fried. Nowadays, some dim sum are wrapped in lettuce leaves instead of dough. Dim sum are served with savory dipping sauces.
Just think of Dim Sum as Chinese Tapas.
It is a great little cookbook and one I am very pleased to have.
Large Chinese Appetizer Treasure in Small Package.......2005-01-05
Truly a beautiful collection of Dim Sum in a small book, only 64 pages. Don't let the small size bother you, though this is serious great food.
30 recipes of asian inspired snacks from potstickers to egg rolls to wraps to soup to custard tarts, this is just beautifully done photographed and step-by-step instructions.
Feast your tastebuds on such as: Steamed Dumplings with Kaffir Lime and Lemongrass; Fish Balls with Shredded Wonton Coating; Salmon and Asian Pesto Packages; Jicama and Lime Salad; Shrimp and Scallion Fritters; Peking-style Duck Pancake Wraps; Orange and Almond Fortune Cookies; Five-Spice Custard Tarts; Steamed Pear and Ginger Puddings.
There are five great dipping sauces recipes included.
Great gift idea for party giving friends or for yourself to throw that casual finger food party.

Great Book.......2007-03-29
clear instructions & wonderful color pictures make it easy to make complex origami shapes.
Advanced? No. Good? No........2003-01-07
Like other reviewers have stated, this book doesn't come even close to being targeted toward advanced folders. In fact, I'm sure most beginners could pick up this book and fold pretty much anything in it.
Yes, there are some practical models, but these are mediocre at best.
My main complaint is the way the author "cheats" on his models. Many, many, many models use odd sized paper (yeah, this maybe okay occasionaly, but he uses this too often.) By using non-square paper, the author is either trying to make it easier on the reader (Why? Isn't this an "advanced" book) or, more likely, is trying to cover up his ineptness at folding.
What is even more frustrating is his liberal use of the "scissors" icon, signalling the folder to cut a portion of the paper during the folding process. Not only is this a slap in the face to true folders, but it is just another way the author is "cheating." For example, the model for the grasshopper requires the folder to, get this, literally cut out legs and antennae! Yes, insects and other many-legged creatures can be difficult to fold, but 1)this is an "advanced" book and 2)to me at least, if you're cutting the paper to make legs, you are no longer in the realm of "origami."
Finally, despite what other reviewers have said, I don't think the diagrams are all that great nor are the pictures that beautiful. You are much better off buying any other origami book than this.
One more thing...WAY too many paper airplanes!
Advanced origami? No, not really.......2001-02-28
I must agree with the other reviewers. The models in this book are not advanced, but it does have some wonderful practical origami. The diagrams are very clear and the photographs are great as well. The models in the second half of the book are nothing special though there are a couple of nice airplanes. If you are interested in practical origami, by all means buy this book; just keep in mind the models are at an intermediate level at best.
For practical users, 5 stars. For others, 3 stars........2001-02-05
I agree with Alan's review above, the title of this book is very misleading. When I first got this book I was quite disappointed that the designs here are not advanced. In fact, they are too easy to fold for advanced and experianced folders (for me they only ranked at too-easy to intermediate level). But just forget about it and then I find this book contains the richest practical origami models in a single book so far. These wonderful models are collected in the first half of the book. We can learn how to fold a purse, a clip holder, a booknote, a bookmarker, etc. In fact now my clipholder and bookmarker are folded as this book did by myself. In my opinion this part is this book's (true) merit. Models in the latter half are a bit trite and too easy. If you are interested on the practical usage of origami, this is a 5 star book. If not, this is only 3 stars. So take an average, 4 stars ^^
Pretty good book, not so good title.......2001-01-31
This is a pretty good book, mostly focused on "practical" origami, with models such as envelopes, wallets, letter holders, etc. These models are fairly nice and useful as well. The few animal models are un-inspired and better versions can be found elsewhere.
There are some nice photographs and the diagrams are pretty good.(although non-standard notation does pop-up)
The title however is VERY misleading. This is an advanced-beginner to intermediate-level book.

Book Description
From Annette Tapert, the coauthor of the popular
The Power of Style, comes a book that is just as beautiful and entertaining but that redefines an attribute even more intangible. In word and image, it evokes a unique Hollywood era and eleven of its goddesses who lived, and left as their legacy, the Power of Glamour.
When the Glamour Era met the Golden Age of cinema, it cast a spell on a public beaten by the Depression and the threat of war. But the key ingredient in 1930s glamour was personality. Annette Tapert's movie-queen profiles, rich with fresh insights, reach beyond the star-making machinery, fan magazines, fashions, and cosmetics to the essence of each women: the carefully molded image of Gloria Swanson, who started it all . . . Marlene Dietrich's siren persona on and off screen . . . the "reverse glamour" of Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo. Their power--and that of Joan Crawford, Carole Lombard, Norma Shearer, Claudette Colbert, and the long-neglected Kay Francis, Dolores Del Rio, and Constance Bennett--lay in using style, wit, and guile to outsmart the studio system and enchant the world. In these pages we see how, veiled in intrigue and mystery, they brought glamour very close to its original meaning: witchcraft.
Customer Reviews:
Glamorous Ladies of the Golden Age.......2007-03-27
What a beautiful book! I originally paged thru this during a visit to my salon, and immediately ordered it online. The book profiles many of the most beautiful, glamorous actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age (1920s-1940s), and includes wonderful photos which show off their inimitible fashion sense, esp. Kay Francis, Constance Bennett, and Dolores Del Rio, all of whom are somewhat sadly forgotten today. An excellent book for anyone interested in Hollywood, glamour, and fashion history!
Where Are The Real Glamour Queens????.......2004-10-29
The book literally is a book of only the 30's. If your intrigued by the other decades of hollywood glamour, dont even consider the book. The book sadly totally alienates the true heavy weights such as the queen of glamour Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, even Audrey Hepburn who didnt have overly done style but its subtlness was nice. All in all, if your really intrested in the 30's glamour, go for it, but if you want more than that look else where.
Glamour and stardom galore.......2004-01-26
This gold and sepia book is gorgeous but the title is deceptive. It is a shame to use such a big word as "Glamour" and then narrow down the features to actresses of the decade of the thirties. I agree that all the stars presented, such as Constance Bennett, Joan Crawford, Katherine Hepburn, Gloria Swanson or Claudette Colbert do tipify glamour, but what about mega glamour stars such as Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly? Otherwise, this book is beautiful, lavishly illustrated and well researched.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2002-09-27
Let me begin by saying that, as a huge vintage film fan, any book that features chapters devoted to both Norma Shearer and Kay Francis between its covers is perfect in my opinion. So now that you know that I am not an impartial judge, I have to tell you this book is fabulous. Annette Tapert did not focus on the cliche glamourous women, she focuses on the often times forgotten glamour girls, such as the aforementioned Norma Shearer and Kay Francis, as well as Dolores Del Rio and Constance Bennett. The book has fabulous photographs and a detailed biography of each glamourous woman. And, glamourous they were! All of the women featured here have left their mark on film and fashion through the years and deserve to be recognized as icons of glamour!
Excellentýawaiting a third entry!.......2002-01-31
I thoroughly enjoyed both of Miss Tapert's books, and hope that she is working on a third-perhaps on female writers who influenced style, such as Elinor Glyn, Jackie Susann and George Sand?
I was particularly pleased to see in this book actresses such as Constance Bennett and Kay Francis, who too often are overlooked. The only subject I might quibble with is Garbo, who was notoriously anti-style and anti-glamour in her private life. But that is a very small objection to a delightful and re-readable book!
