Don't Underestimate an Older Person.......2007-06-24
In this well-told tale of two tribewomen who are in their old age we see what determination can do. Having earned the respect of their tribe these two women have been content to let others do for them over the years. But their age hinders the tribespeople's movements and they are facing a brutal winter. The chief makes the decision to turn these two out into the harshness of the bleak Alaskan Yukon to live or die.
Together these two women forge a bond of friendship and recall the skills of their younger days, conquering the pain of unused muscles and fear of the unknown to survive even the harshest of conditions. The story comes full circle when they again meet up with their tribe and the chief who once turned them out now finds he and his people have need of their wisdom.
A wonderful book for just about everyone. Full of hope and determination.

A very classic story takes a new form here- two old women are the victims of betrayal from their tribe when it's too cold to continue to support them. The two women must venture out of their own and make a life for themselves. The book comes full circle when the old women themselves are in the position to save the tribe themselves.
The story of the courage to overcome the odds, and the stregth and struggle of the two women is a wonderful tale. Classic in that you learn you should not over estimate anyone, and you never know who in life you'll need. It's a touching tale, and well-told. It's a quick read.

This book is the best. I read the reviews and thought it would make a nice gift for my 76 year old mom for Mom's Day. Well, when I got in the mail I decided to take a peak. There was no putting it down. It's the most beautiful story of courage, friendship, determination and reflection. The story is very well written. The author brings you into the journey of these two women. Not just a geographical journey but a journey of reflection. I'm telling you, you'll love it. I sent it to my mom but I really want another copy just to keep under my pillow. Corny - read it.

I enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone. Young readers would enjoy it too. It's about two old women and survival in an area that seems to have very little to survive with. They were very innovative. As happens so often they were able to help their families in the end even though the young thought the elders had lost their usefulness.

As a teacher, I appreciate a book that can be read by any student at any age level. The life lessons taught in this tribal legend are timeless. The story unfolds begging the question of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few or the one(Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn).
The chief of the tribe must make choices - difficult ones at that. The conditions are harsh, the two old women have been using their age as a tool to get the younger tribe members to serve their whims - they even fake some physical maladies to play upon the Peoples' compassion. This, it turns out, backfires on them. The chief makes the decision to banish them from the tribe to serve the needs of the trible. He is concerned that the women will bring the tribe down.
There are times when people in charge have to make decisions that are unpleasant - this is a reality.
The women are left to fend for themselves and the tribe moves on. The issues of family, societal expectations, and betrayal loom heavily in the reader's mind.
It brings about the discussion of modern society's obsession with youth and our disdain for those who are aged. Our nation's homes for the elderly are brimming - this book speaks to that issue. Getting old does not mean useless!
The women call upon lessons learned in youth to survive. They also discover that they need each other in more ways than one.
While the book is an easy read-don't let that mislead you into thinking it is not sophisticated fare. The life-lessons taught are important for everyone to learn and take to heart. I am astounded by this book! It gets my highest recommendation. Buy it-read it-learn from it.

Another great book in the series.......2006-06-29
Oh dear. Mrs. Goodge, the cook, is away, and the staff has to help cook the meals in her absence. The trouble is, none of them remotely measure up, and they and the Inspector have to eat horrible meals. The Inspector, of course, is too polite to complain, and only asks now and then if Mrs. Jeffries (the housekeeper and leader of the staff) has found a replacement cook. Of course they can't hire a replacement cook - the staff has to investigate the murder in SECRET, and it wouldn't do to have a stranger in the house. But they can't very well tell the Inspector that. That is the subplot and is hilarious in itself.
The main plot is of course the murder of the odious Mr. Barrett and the list of suspects a mile long. The household is baffled at first, but not for long!
Another murder for the crew in Edmonton Gardens........2005-02-01
Mrs. Jeffries and her crew (minus the cook this time) are on the trail of another killer. The murder victim though is one that everyone hates and the list of suspects is longer than they're used to. This is actually quite a funny Mrs. Jeffries. The efforts that each of the staff make to cook while the their cook is away visiting a sick relative are creative if not palatable, and poor Inspector Witherspoon is suffering greatly. This is a wonderful cozy series set in Victorian London. There's not much history in the books, but they are fun nonetheless.
Bad Cooking Can Be Murder For Your Stomach!.......2003-06-30
In this 6th book in the Mrs. Jeffries series, the staff at Upper Edmonton Gardens is asked to help retrieve and return a stolen item to the home of an unsuspecting victim. It seems that the "thief" is known to have a slight kleptomania problem (but she returns everything after a few days) and is embarrassed that she will lose her social standing if anyone finds out. The last time that the thief stole an item a much-hated man, William Barrett, discovered her taking a small china bird from a friend's home, and he threatens to blackmail her. While trying to take the bird back from Mr. Barrett, one of Inspector Witherspoon's staff stumbles upon Mr. Barrett's dead body in the study and the staff once again have themselves a murder to solve.
The latest book in the series was enjoyable but not my favorite so far. I enjoyed the portions of the book dealing with the failed attempts at cooking for the staff and Inspector Witherspoon (the cook was not present in much of this book due to her visiting a sick relative) by Mrs. Jeffries, Betsy, and Luty Belle Crookshank. However, the mystery was a bit drawn out and Mrs. Jeffries did not seem like her perceptive self (probably due to the horrible food)! I would still recommend reading this mystery for the characters, which grow and develop with each book.
The first book in the series is "The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries". Enjoy!

Riggs is the little boy in all of us... afraid of nothing, willing to do almost anything at the drop of a tall stovepipe hat.
Knowing Josh for nearly 2 decades, I wasn't stunned to see this story come from him. I was jubilant. His moment to shine has arrived, and his true place in the world is realized. Anyone can learn how to monkey with a computer, but it takes true genius like his to put pen to paper and end up with a masterpiece.
Periphery Stowe is a challenge to all authors: Don't pander to your audience, but instead teach them. Don't give them what they expect. Instead, give them what they need.
In the end, the world is just as large as the imagination of a little boy.

I recommend this to everyone of all ages and reading levels. I fell in love with this book after the first page. I was amazed with Wagner's writing style. His poetic descriptions make the characters and the world he writes them into come alive. After reading this book I immediately went back to the beginning and started reading it all over again. This is one of those special books I will read and recommend to everyone again and again.

Characters brimming with personality, and locations beyond imagination, it's hard not to get lost in the imagination of Periphery Stowe right along with Riggs.
Though at times showing evidence of being a first novel, it hardly detracts from the beatiful prose and obvious skill the author has for writing.

I'm just wondering what tricks Wagner has up his sleeve for his next book..

This entire book is set in lands we will never see, with contraptions we will never use, yet I can visualize them. I can believe in them. It is almost as if Wagner has tapped into another dimension and is just telling it as he sees it.

Satisfying Insurance Requirements.......2006-03-13
The subject book is very well illustrated with actual photographs. The descriptions of each item are not consistent throughout. In some places dimensions are entered in fractions while in other places they are entered as decimals. We purchased the book to satisfy an insurance claim. Dimensions was one of the insurance requirements; however, none of the items in the book have their original cost which was also another requirement of the insurance forms.

BRAVO!
Absolutely fascinating exploration of pre-modern theories and representations of the passions (emotions). It is amazing to see how artists anticipate neuroscientific truths regarding the expression of human emotions both two-dimensionally (on the face) and three-dimensionally (in body language and the rhetoric of gesture).
Well worth the wait for the final editing of Ms. Monatgu's 1959 doctoral dissertation under the late Sir Ernst Gombrich.
A pity that Dr. Montagu was unable to entend her reach into more recent periods, including the impact of Darwin and Warburg on the understanding of emotion in aesthetic experience in more recent times!
