Book Description
During NATO exercises, the French navy unveils a nuclear submarine so advanced that it can elude any radar system in the water. But France's maritime marvel becomes its own worst enemy when a band of Algerian terrorists hijacks the boat-and threatens to wipe Paris off the face of the earth before turning their missiles against America and Russia.
Two NATO subs are called into action: the USS Hampton, captained by veteran sub warrior Burke Dillinger, and the USS Texas, commanded by the iron-willed Peter Vornado. With Paris being evacuated and time running out, the coming conflict will pit the ultimate in technological weaponry against the courage, skill, and determination of Dillinger and Vornado.
Customer Reviews:
It should have a warning label on it........2007-09-01
I like war and action books. I am a former submariner, so I was looking forward to reading my first book from this author.
I only read the first 1/3 of it and put it away. I am not a prude, but the graphic (I mean REALLY graphic, unecesary sex scenes, and unnecesarily sick torture scenes were so blatantly offensive that I will probably never read another book by this author again! It should be restricted to a shelf in an Adult Bookstore.
Aside from that, the book is cluttered with too much procedural detail. It might have gotten better, but I couldn't wade through the garbage long enough to see.
I'm no expert, but I think Mr. DiMercurio should run, not walk to the nearest therapist before he attempts to write again.
Vertical Dive - not top form.......2007-07-25
I do not know the author or his personal life but I have read all his books up to this point. This was by far the worst and I move on to Emergency Deep with trepidation.
I was first put off by the overly extensive descriptive narrative. It even surpassed Herman Melville! Everyone was described in excruciating detail, even those that were soon dispatched. The love(?) scene between a French officer and his wife went on for many pages (too long) and was virtually pornographic in its detail. This was unnecessary and really did not add to the story line. The graphic and sickening detail, that also went on for pages and was brought up again, on the torture and mutilation of terrorist victims made me wonder about the author's own level of anger. It was simply gruesome. More than once the disintegration of body parts was described in every detail using the device of time dilation to extend the narrative. In previous books this happened but not nearly to this morbid extent.
While I recommend all prior DiMercurio novels, I cannot do so for this one.
First time reader.......2007-06-24
I was actually quite intrigued by this novel. I had never really read anything in the genre with the things in it that everyone else seems to dislike. I normally stay away from the "terrorists steal the ship" dynamic because they seem so implausible. This version however, seemed the only logical way that it could actually happen. I plan to read more by this author.
NOT UP TO HIS PREVIOUS .......2006-09-17
Not really much to say, I have read all his other books, but by far his worst. I'm not really into ghosts in subs, the rest of the plot was not too bad. But I have to agree with a previous reviewer, a billion dollar sub sent out on an exercise in a hurricane and his dead wife telling him what to do?
Zoned-out Reader / Storyline Over Power with Jargon.......2006-05-27
.
Let's first start with - I am a fan of Michael DiMercurio and I have read all of his books!
However, when I purchased "Vertical Dive" in Dec 2005, it has taken me 5-months to push through and read the book.
Usually, I finish Mr. DiMercurio's books in 2 or 3 days. Regretfully, with "Vertical Dive," I kept putting it down every few pages.
This book was a miss and I know Mr. DiMercurio has an amazing talent and gift for writing. I do not know if the downturn in the book was due to problems in his personal life, but I am positive his next book will hopefully be back on track.
While I usually find the technical jargon interesting, well defined and compelling to read, "Vertical Dive" seem to just be stuffed with an over abundance of Navy manual material. Enough already. Did the story really need almost six pages of manual dialog on the French sub pulling out of the dock? Or, could the book have gotten by with simply, the French sub just pulled out of port and not go into such depth of details to cause the reader to zone-out?
"Vertical Dive" seems to be an amazing collection of abstracts from Navy manuals and the storyline was lost with all the filler information. I want to read a story, not a manual. In the past, Mr. DiMercurio did not allow the technical information to be so overwhelming as to overpower the storyline.

After his ex-girlfriend is found dead, Harrison Black, owner of At Wick's End, finds out just how hot old flames-and a ruthless killer-can burn.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Mystery.......2006-11-23
I really like the candlemaking series. I recommend it to anyone wanting a fast, enjoyable read.
Great for what it is.......2006-07-30
I feel this series is improving. The author can only fit in so much in a small paperback cozy, so here he concentrates on Harrison's relationship with Markum, as well as Sanora and Heather. I figured out the "primary" villain early on, but - quasi-spoiler alert - there's more than one.
A minor point that registered with me (as a guy) was a customer assuming that Harrison worked for a female owner/manager, presumably because it was a craft shop. There had been another character who came in looking for his aunt, and had to be informed of her death, so it wasn't that kind of a mistake. In this installment, Myers introduces a couple of new characters, who are likely to be prominent in future stories, as well as having one (or two) likely to recede.
Looking forward to the next one.
Death of an Old Flame.......2006-07-18
Harrison Black is trying to fit in a quick morning kayak trip on the Gun Powder River behind his shop when he bumps into something. To his horror, he discovers it's a body. He's even more upset when he realizes its Becka Lane, his ex-girlfriend. While the two no longer dated, they had remained good friends.
Despite the fact that she was found in the river, the coroner declares her death an overdose. That immediately sets off warning bells in Harrison's mind. Becka hated pills. There's no way she would take them willingly. When the sheriff concludes it was a suicide, Harrison feels the need to investigate to find the murderer.
Unfortunately, Harrison is facing some other problems. A developer is trying to buy the undeveloped land next to his story and turn it into condos. When Harrison tries to visit his neighbor to talk to him about it, the man refuses to see him. And, two of Harrison's tenants are still feuding; each threatening not to sign a lease renewal if the other stays. How can he cope with all of this?
As with the other books in the series, Harrison is the glue that holds the story together. His stubbornness and honorability make him instantly likeable, while his recklessness and lack of tact get him into all kinds of trouble. His relationship with Eve, his employee, is still rocky. I can never decide from one page to the next if I like her or not. I wish we'd really delve into her a little more in the series. Taking a larger role in this book is Harrison's friend Markum. He's always intrigued me, so I was glad to see more of him.
Unfortunately, the plot could have been better. Killing off a series character is always risky, but here it worked well. I'd never especially liked Becka, but I felt sorry at her demise. Too much time is spent on the other problems Harrison is facing, and not enough time is spent developing the mystery. That's probably because it was rather thin. I knew right away who the killer was. Even so, the ending felt a little abrupt.
This is not one of the stronger entries in the series. Fans of Harrison will still find it satisfying, but others should look elsewhere for a good read.

Customer Reviews:
Believe me, this not that bad........2006-06-21
Yes, I bought this book at the comic store a while ago. And unlike the last review I found that this wasn't the worst I've read. The manga is great, and I like the theme. And there are funny moments in it , were for some just downright random reason they make Soma (the protagonist, or main character in simpler terms) extremely ugly .... I don't know why but the randomness cracks me up. But yeah, it does have it's cheesy parts. Dragon Ball Z has it's "Kamahmaiha" , Pikachu's got it's "thundershock" and Soma's got his "grandforce cannon" .
But believe me I've seen worse.
Buy or no, it's your choice.
THE FIST OF DESTRUCTION.......2006-02-05
200 years ago on the world of Varklide, during the so-called "Dark Era", war was rampant and powerful magical weapons were used by all sides which pretty much devastated the planet. To keep this from happening again, pseudo-police forces known as Unions were formed to seal the weapons up and keep anyone from acquring them. But of course, this doesn't keep lustful would-be tyrants from seeking them out. Soma the Vaizard is one of the agents of the Sir-Radin Alliance that is sent out to combat these forces. Equipped with "The Divine Fist", a magical glove that unleashes the "Grand Force Cannon" to blow away monsters, human and otherwise, and a eye for the ladies, he is sent to aid Asuka, who is researching the ruins of a site where a magical weapon is interred.
Vaizard Volume 1 is a good example of why ADV manga is practically defunct except for a few releases. This book is about as average as you can get in terms of story and character. All of the dialogue and plot is really just foreplay to get to a scene where Soma can invoke some dark god and yell out "Grand Force Cannon!" as he's wearing a roller-derby type outfit. It's nothing you haven't already seen in a Shonen Jump title. There's no laughs, no excitement, no suspense.
Book Description
Today, with our supercomplicated, stress-filled lives, the one element we can all use more of is energy. In Energy Breakthrough: Jump-start Your Weight Loss and Feel Great, Sarah, The Duchess of York tells how she copes with her incredibly multifaceted life yet keeps her weight down, her body trim, and her energy at its peak. Together with the editors of Weight Watchers, The Duchess details how you can do the same with a combination of nutritious eating, effective exercise, and a positive state of mind.
Energy Breakthrough is divided into two parts: "Understanding Energy" and "Fueling Your Energy." Part 1: "Understanding Energy" analyzes the three facets that make up what The Duchess calls the "energy equation": good nutrition, regular exercise, and an upbeat attitude toward life. The chapters "Food as Fuel for Your Body and Mind" and "Eating for Energy" give the basics of nutrition and tell how to balance meals to achieve optimum vigor. "Recharging Your Batteries with Exercise" explains how, paradoxically, the more active you are, the more energetic you'll feel, while "A Workout to Rev Up Your Energy" provides a walking regimen that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life for years to come.
"Energy from the Inside Out" describes how sleep deprivation, stress, and emotional issues can affect energy, then supplies ways to overcome these problems. Finally, "Giving Yourself an Energy Makeover" offers myriad suggestions for keeping your energy flow in tip-top condition. Part 2: "Fueling Your Energy" presents more than 75 delicious yet simple recipes for appetizers, breakfasts and brunches, lunches, main meals, desserts, and snacks, illustrated with color photographs. Also included are 28 daily menus that combine the recipes with still more luscious preparation ideas -- all designed to yield optimum energy and weight loss. The menus and recipes, based on the popular Weight Watchers
Winning Points weight-loss plan, include POINTS® values.
Chock-full of hints, tips, lists, quizzes, and profiles of everyday people who have successfully incorporated the Weight Watchers plan into their lives -- and, of course, The Duchess of York's heartfelt support -- Energy Breakthrough is a book you'll turn to again and again for healthy advice and encouragement.

Nothing New.......2006-10-25
If you know nothing about diet and exercise, this book may enlighten you some. But if you know anything at all, this is monotonous. There appears to be some good recipes, but I haven't tried any yet. All it says is eat well, exercise, and make time for yourself - don't need 130 plus pages for that.

Afternoon Tea!.......2007-05-12
what a great book! my idea of luxury is to attend afternoon tea in a great hotel-and now I can recreate some of the recipes (but not the harpist) at home. If you like tea, good food, and learning about creating a mood or an atmosphere for your guests, this little book is just great!
Nice book on English Tea.......2007-01-19
I enjoyed reading this book. It is a good starter book for those who would like to understand the ritual of English Tea and basic recipes of this time of day.
Good things do come in small packages.......2006-10-18
Lots of easy, great recipes. If for no other reason, you should buy this book just for the basic english muffin recipe and scone recipes.
The Best Resource for Tradition as well as Recipes!.......2006-08-09
A friend and I have recently begun taking tea and we love the true British and Victorian style of tea houses. I wanted to find a book for her that was a great resource on the history of afternoon and high tea as well as providing some recipes to go along with the information. This was the best book I found. No other goes into as much detail about the history of tea that this book does. The only downfall is that the only illustrations in the book are line drawings. There are no photos. Still, that didn't keep me from picking this book over several others that did have nice pictures, because in the end, the content of this book superceded any other.
Best of 4.......2005-01-05
I've recently bought 4 different tea books and this is the best one I have so far. There are a lot of the expected recipes for traditional tea time fare, with some minor omissions I felt. The print left something to be desired, some of it was blurred, but if you just want to buy 1 English tea book, this is it.

This is one of two new Glove Box Guides from Really Great Books: a new series with the real lowdown ont he best eats. It irreverently gives natives, longtime residents and new initiates alike the inside scoop on what's good, what makes it good and why it's a good idea to eat there.

Good eats on a budget.......2000-08-20
We have now tried out about 10 of the places in this book, and have not been disappointed yet! This is a great guide for those of us that are looking for good (sometimes even great) food without spending a lot of money. Most telling, while we always check out Hungry? before we head out into a new part of LA, we never even glance at our Zagat guide (which was given as a gift 3 year ago when we moved here)! Zagat may be good if you've got money to spend, but the Hungry? guide is the one to get if you're looking for some hidden gems in LA.
Buy this book.......2000-01-16
If you are in LA and you are hungry then you need this book. Heck, you don't even have to be in LA or hungry, this is one swell book. Lots of fun to read, informative yet witty without being silly. The section on Cheese Breads alone is worth the price.
A Great Local Book for Local Eats.......1999-12-15
There are perhaps a dozen or more books out there about where to eat in Los Angeles, but this is the one recommended by the staff of the Los Angeles Almanac. It has all our favorite calorie-loading haunts as well as many we don't even know about and sure would like to try. What we like best - unlike so many other snobbish L.A. where-to-eat books, this one doesn't ignore the rich culinary terrain of L.A. County's Eastside (Taco King rules!). Keep this guidebook in your glovebox along with your Thomas Guide!

Beautiful photos and an informative useful guide.......2005-02-07
Even if you are not the slightest bit interested in Bakelite plastic jewelry, you will enjoy this book. It introduces Ron and Ester Shultz, who are a husband and wife who are artists and craftspeople who make modern jewelry from recycled Bakelite plastic. Their story alone is inspiring, but wait until you see the jewelry- it's whimiscal, colorful, and fun to look at. Along with careful examinations of the Shultz's various techniques, this book is filled with beautiful full color photos of their jewelry. The author, Karima Parry, has already written two books on Bakelite jewelry which are collector 'must haves': "Bakelite Bangles Price and Identification Guide", and "Bakelite Pins". In those books, she not only shows plenty of Bakelite jewelry, but she also demonstrates a great deal of knowledge about her subject, and a mission to teach the reader/collector what she knows. "Shultz Bakelite Jewelry" is given the same scholarly treatment that Parry has taken with vintage Bakelite jewelry in her other books. She guides the reader through the techniques and decorative patterns that are used by the Shultzs, and introduces a workable terminology to describe them. Unlike many of the other books on Bakelite jewelry, Parry discusses the pieces in detail and helps the reader to understand why some pieces are considered more collectible, or better examples of a technique than others. Every piece is shown in full color, and includes it's measurements and a realistic price range. This book paves the way for collectors to collect Shultz Bakelite jewelry with knowledge and confidence. For anyone from a beginner to a serious advanced collector, if the subject is Bakelite jewelry, the best guide around is Karima Parry.

A must have for African Art collectors.......2007-01-09
This book is one of best African Art books so far published. Beautiful pictures, beautiful objects, carefully selected and printed on high quality paper.
If you're interested in more than African masks and fetishes. This is the one.
This is a gorgeous book.......2000-12-11
This is a gorgeous book. As a filmmaker who makes films about rituals, celebrations, and ethnic traditions, I was delighted to see how the soul and culture of the people comes accross through their objects. And these objects are beautiful - textural and detailed to the point where one can almost touch them. The photographer did a great job using lighting that gives the work a three-dimensional look. But this is more than just a great photo book. The careful explanations that accompany each one demonstrate the sophistication and refined aesthetic of people who were once easily dismissed as "primitive". I found it interesting to note how vast their use of materials was - wood, metals, beads, ceramics, etc. Although not a collector in any way, I would have been glad to own any of these objects. Better yet, I now own the book, and would definately recommend it.

Among the wave of film directors who brought fresh blood and maverick sensibilities to southern California in the early 1960s--including Francis Ford Coppola, John Milius, Brian DePalma, and Martin Scorsese--none could have seemed less likely than George Lucas, the short, painfully shy car nerd from Modesto, California. And yet, in a mere four appearances behind the camera over 20 years, he managed to change Hollywood and fundamentally alter the culture. In this lively and informative biography, John Baxter weaves interviews with Modesto townies and Lucas cronies into a portrait of the man as an artistically gifted loner with a grocer's feeling for budgets--an important director who was also unmanned by directing and a self-effacing man whose notes for Star Wars reveal an ambition to make an American epic on the scale of Kurosawa's samurai stories. Baxter skillfully shades in Lucas's emotionally straitened adolescence, his lack-of-anything-better-to-do enrollment in USC's film school, and his relationship with Coppola, whose operatic maneuverings made the small, European-ish American Graffiti possible, even as his flamboyance estranged the two. Baxter also takes Lucas to task--Lucas lied about losing his virginity in the back seat of a car, he argues--but by the end the author has been won over, appreciating Lucas's films less than he admires the basic goodness and integrity of the man who put up money for Kurosawa's Ran and Coppola's Tucker, for no other reason than because he felt that small-town boy's sense of debt to his mentors. --Lyall Bush
Book Description
George Lucas is one of the most innovative and commercially successful players on the movie scene today. Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, together with the three "Indiana Jones" films-all six of which he conceived, produced, and co-wrote-comprise the most popular group of films ever made. Lucas masterminded a revolutionary shift in the control of funding and profits of Hollywood films away from the studios into the hands of the filmmakers themselves. His state-of-the-art film exhibition techniques (such as THX sound systems) have transformed the cinematic experience, and his Industrial Light & Magic is the finest special effects studio in the world. Yet he has remained an enigma and a recluse--until now.
Customer Reviews:
Really Bad .......2007-06-20
This book full of mistakes with facts (i.e. Jim Hanson played Yoda) and he was more interested in writing about the negative things about Lucas.
This book is a mess.......2005-07-02
I started reading this book today and I've only made it through two chapters and the only reason I read two is because I thought I should give the book another chance after reading the first chapter. I'm really not sure where the author is going with this book, it just doesn't seem to make sense to me. I felt he was not writing this book to tell the story of Lucas's life but in stead writing in literary confusion. It did not grab me at all. So I came here to see what other people thought of this book and I'm glad it wasn't just me. This book is a mess. Glad I got it from the library and didn't spend the $27 for it. There are other books that tell of the creative work and business of George Lucas.
Good Book--Sloppy Fact Checking.......2005-05-06
This is quite a comprehensive biography of George Lucas' life to 1999, reaching all the way back to his grandfather's time, and then to George Sr.'s time, before starting in on the life of the man who brought you Star Wars and Howard the Duck. Baxter writes with an engaging style and includes interviews with primary and secondary school friends that show the depth of his due diligence. Be warned that this is not a biography that tries to present everything Lucas in a strictly positive light (Baxter gives examples of the Lucas machine's attempts in essence to re-write the legends surrounding its god). As any good biography should, this book includes not only the shining chapters of Lucas' life, but the less glorious ones as well. Still, the chapters that depict Lucas as a cold, asexual, genius do not detract from our admiration of him as a filmmaker, and the epic chapters that describe the underdog success of the first Star Wars film in fact allow us to re-live the moment as if we were back there in '77 cheering for the rebels in their battle against the Galactic Empire, for Lucas in his fight against the Hollywood studios.
Unfortunately, as much great information as this book might have, much of it is made questionable due to some glaring mistakes in the last few chapters. Despite the immense amount of research undertaken to write such a book, it is clear that Baxter has very little "street" knowledge of American popular culture. Ky Huy Huan was not the name of the Vietnamese Chinese boy who played Short Round (and later Data, in the Goonies) in Temple of Doom. No, Tom Ryan is not the name of Harrison Ford's character in the movies based on Tom Clancy's novels. No, Terence Stamp did not play Darth Sidious in Star Wars: Episode I. And no, the Trade Federation did not have an army of C3POs. For Baxter's target audience, a readership that comes from a generation raised on the films of George Lucas, these errors are painfully obvious and completely absurd, and thus cast the entire book in doubt. This is truly a shame because Baxter has put a mighty effort into giving us a very well-rounded look at the 20th century's most influential filmmaker. Four stars for the book's captivating narrative style.
Inaccurate But Still Good.......2003-04-03
I am a big George Lucas fan and I found a few errors in this book. The one that really bothered me was that the author repeatedly stated that Jim Henson did the puppeteering and voice for Yoda. IT WAS FRANK OZ NOT JIM HENSON! That was soooo annoying! I kept wishing that the author was around so that I could just scream it in his face!
Other than these small details, the book was pretty good. But still, I can't help but wonder what else was inaccurate that I just took as new information.
A Surprising Disappointment..........2002-05-20
I've always been a Lucasfilm/Star Wars fanatic, and have always gobbled up any shred of info, whether it be about the stories, or the behind-the-scenes realm. I'm one of those fans who knows the names of the modelmakers responsible for those great, worn ships in the original film.
And while I am a bit over the top in regards to what I know, this in no way absolves John Baxter for the mountainous errors in his work. Just because I'm sharp on a lot regarding Lucas doesn't mean that Baxter's innacurracies won't be such a sin if they fall on uninformed ears.I won't go through each and every flaw, but let me just warn you that this book drops the ball repeatedly regarding what Lucasfilm fans would call rudimentary data.
I t's best to bypass this mess and select David Pollock's "Skywalking" instead. It's the oldest and still the best bio on this great talent. Another book that proved to be immensely entertaining (though only covering the era of the first trilogy) was Garry Jenkin's "Empire Building." If it's behind the scenes Star Wars stuff you're after, then this is absolutely THE book to get.
In closing, I'm most disappointed with Mythmaker because it pales in comparison to Baxter's Steven Spielberg bio released a few years before. It makes me wonder how accurate (or innacurate) THAT bio was.....
