My Funny Face Book (My Craft Book Series) by Marion Elliot.......2005-03-22

When dressing for halloween or for any other party where one is expected to dress up in costumes then this little book is very important to ones arsenal. The pictures and examples are easy to follow and the font is nice and big. It also shows how to make fake hamburgers and fries and this is fun for the little ones that like to play house or restaurant. Gotta love the jolly roger, with his distinct scar on the cheek.

This is a consistently amusing and diverting collection, good as a bedside book or a welcome entertainment while sunning yourself on your own deck. Author Sachs, a certified guy (his picture is on the cover), takes on a female point of view in recounting the sailing experiences of Irma and Ralph, her beer-guzzling husband. I like the riff on naming boats, from the Sin King to the Half Moon.

"Suddenly We Didn't Want to Die: Memoirs of a World War I Marine," by Elton E. Mackin, has an introduction and annotations by George B. Clark and a foreword by Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak, USMC (Ret.). Clark's introduction notes that Mackin was born in New York State in 1898 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1917. This book evokes the combat experiences of Marines in Europe during WW1.

I found this book quite stunning. The sections often read like prose poems or very short stories. Mackin is graphic in describing wartime violence and suffering, but his writing is also at times quite beautiful. The narrative opens with the Marines preparing to advance upon German-held Belleau Wood. Mackin follows in particular the career of "Slim," a Marine who becomes a runner (battlefield messenger).

Mackin covers a number of subjects: encounters with German troops, relations with civilians, relations between "old-timers" and green replacement troops, and the dangers of the runners' job. The book contains many interesting technical details about war in that era: weapons, fortifications, poison gas, etc.

The narrator's voice is often ironic, satiric, sarcastic, and even bitter. But his voice is also humane--he sees moments of kindness and tenderness in the midst of the hell of war. At one point the author cites Walt Whitman. Like Whitman, Mackin is irreverent yet compassionate, with an eye for detail and a knack for rendering humanity in both its tragedy and beauty. This is a valuable addition to the canon of United States war literature.

OK - but hardly a classic.......2003-10-04

Mackin's memoir of his experiences as a Marine in the First World War was good, but not great. The experiences he shares are not uncommon to fighting men in any war, which makes the book seem a little cliched. I was also irritated by his references to himself in the third person ("the kid"). With that said, however, it is one of only a handful of memoirs by Americans who served in France, and as such is worthy of attention.

The writing goes for a pithy Hemingway style, but falls far short of Hemingway. And some of the sections aren't interesting. But some of the book is earth-shakingly poignant. The bit that hit me was the author's describing the mind of the soldier who has seen such horror he knows God does not exist. And he makes a vow to abide by that belief. And then when he's shot and dying, the boyhood memory of a country church springs to mind and he yells, "Oh, God" and feels guilty at betraying his new found atheism.

Mackin's book is a spare, at times profound and almost poetic evocation of the life of a Marine Corps grunt on the Western Front in World War I. The dominant theme is of how men accommodate themselves to the appalling realization that they are in a hopeless situation in which they will be killed, and there is nothing they can do to prevent it, and that no one other than their comrades will ever fully appreciate this predicament: "The folks at home will never know the truth."

Mackin writes of the thrill and terror of battle, the feelings of fear and elation, and the awe at seeing other men die: "It is always a show, no matter how terrifying."

To deal with this world of fear and death, men developed a sarcasm for weakness: "They make a bitter joke of things to cover feelings"; "We learned to close our minds to the memory of men who fell. We took the way of living day to day . . . We learned to laugh at everything in time. It carried us." Men lost their youth, and in some ways matured, and in other ways were permanently scarred: "There was no singing now . . . The faces had changed. . . . his scars would be deep, and never, never leave his eyes."

A vivid and eloquent book.......1999-10-16

Elton E. Mackin only had a high-school education but he wrote with a natural ability. Here is war. He dosen't glamorize it, he dosen't attempt to glorify it and he dosen't use his memoir as a soapbox. He dosen't judge or condem those who were in command. This is an account of a rifleman. He served at the very bottom and experience war at it's most basic and cruel. Next to the fear and horror of combat Mackin gives equal time to the everyday exsistence of a soldier or Marine. The lack of sleep, the poor food which there was never enough of, the boredom, all the physical discomforts of serving in the field during a war. A superb book. Of interest to both WW1 buffs and the general reader.

Beyond Flying, Insight and Travel.......2007-09-27

This book revealed what Barbara was living, not editing out what was politically correct, not covering up the flying mistakes that would be embarrassing to most, not holding back on insights of strong dominate individuals in her life who can make decisions difficult in and out of the cockpit. In this book, Barbara was true to herself and her readers, in her decision-making, her skills and her growth as a person.

As a pilot I learned from this book, good pilots are always learning, as a woman I learned from this book, trust your instincts and as a person I learned from this book, live your dream.

Well written and difficult to put down.

stunning photos - fair writing.......2007-07-24

This book is illustrated by a collection of high-end aerial photography that makes it probably the most colorful travel/aviation nonfiction available. The text offers just a tad more of the author's private affairs (career, marriage) than you might expect (definitely too much for my taste: maybe I should have taken the subtitle - 'A Pilot's Inner Journey' - more seriously). That said, you get a fair overview of the challenges of a really long cross country flight as well as an explanation why you want to prepare well for your own flying adventure to South America.

Great book..........2006-05-18

This was a good, easy read. A little frustrating for this more experienced pilot, but for lesser-experienced pilots, and especially women pilots, you will really enjoy it.

Keep in mind that this isn't just a normal hardcover book. It's printed on glossy 60-lb. paper and has dozens of incredible photos taken by her husband, renowned photographer Galen Rowell.

Moving story, beautiful images.......2004-12-24

There are a lot of things wrong with this book, as noted by other reviewers, including:
- An inexperienced private pilot repeatedly in over her head
- No great insights into the places or people she visits
- A level of jealousy for her famous husband
And yet, I found myself truly drawn in to the story, due to the combination of adventure, beautiful images, and the author's relentless desire to prove herself. Knowing how she met her fate added a level of poignancy for me. I coudn't put it down.

Fascinating!.......2004-06-10

This book is not only extremely entertaining but also a great collection of beautiful color photographs of different spots "South of the border...WAY South."

The author bears her soul for the reader in such a manner that you will feel you're sitting right next to her in the cockpit of her single-engine Cessna as she flies herself (as well as her husband and brother) to the adventure of a lifetime.

Some will say she was a bad pilot. Who are we to judge? She was a brave soul and I am glad she had the courage to share her experience with the rest of us "safe" pilots.

Barbara's book is an inspiring story of self-discovery. One that pilots and non-pilots alike will enjoy.

i have loved horses all my life, but watching TV doesnt give you anywhere NEAR the insight you need when actually owning, caring for, sometimes first-aiding horses.
this is a very good, easy to understand horse care, attitude, modest training book. this isnt how to break and make a world class horse, it is how to handle common problems that are almost universal in horses. i have learned so much by using this and other books, i have to recommend to ANYONE who hasnt owned a horse, or has but is only after many years getting back into it, to re-read this and other books like this. rather than state specific detail, just understand this book hits on some of the real everyday problems all horse owners will or have or are facing. it isnt an extremely indepth coeverage of each area, it is more of a " ok,, lets FIX the basic problem now, which will make it easier to get more advanced later" kind of book.

so in that sense, it is ideal. i do wish it was a little longer, or i would give it 5 stars, as there is a few minor areas ( or just ones i am interested in, like foals from newborn to a few months ) that i wanted more depth, BUT, if it covered everything, it would be 1500 pages long, and cost $300..

i recommend this book for anyone who really isnt a genuine expert in most areas of horse care.

Excellent help for first time horse owners........2000-05-01

I have browsed through another horse owner's book and I liked what I saw so I ordered this for myself. It has all the answers to questions that I, as a first time horse owner, have asked. I cant wait to read my own copy in depth. Some of the questions that were answered for me are how to know if my horse is sick, proper shoe care, and other health related issues that i feel are most important.

not what I expected.......2006-08-06

It may be useful depending on your needs. It is somewhat brief and more than half of it contains listing of nurseries and garden centers with address and phone numbers. It begins with a brief description of each area and 2 maps. For each area it has a simple list of plants, shrubs etcs which have been selected based on zone, watering needs, soil requirements, sunlight, and design, with a very few pictures, and that is it. There are stars to note plants which are native. All the list contains is name of plant, latin name, and star if native. So I assume you would pick from the list and then refer to another text to learn more about those plants. So if this is what you need you may like this book.

I was really looking for a gardening book to help me make make a beautiful landscape! And this did just that.
It was very helpful with specific details.
It has a range and varitey of pictures and step by step processes. very well organized and easy to read and understand.
Great for people who want to improve their yard.
All and all this was a great book and helped me make a beautiful yard! i advise it to you!

This book, this author is an inspiration to life itself ! I found, once I started, I could NOT put the book down, and then attended one of her talks and the finer details that came through .. truly amazing, inspiring and awesome ! As you read, YOU are in Changi, YOU are there, feeling every emotion that was felt by the author, crying, laughing .. this is the BEST book I have ever read and I class it up in the levels of the Diary of Anne Frank and more !
