Book Description

He began life at his twin brother’s side, soon running wild on his father’s ranch on the edge of Africa. But violence, desire, and fate sent Sean Courtney into exile—where he would fight and love his way to extraordinary success and heartbreaking failure...

In a place called The Ridge of White Waters, Sean made a life-long friendship, mined a fortune of gold, and met his own demons. Then an act of cunning betrayal struck—and ignited a new adventure to a new frontier.
From facing the murderous charge of a towering bull elephant to watching men die unspeakable deaths, Sean fought new enemies, forged new allies—and dreamed of establishing a family on a farm of his own. But the young man who had lived by his courage, sweat, and blood was about to discover that the past still had its claws in him…

Another novel in Wilbur Smith's Courtneys of Africa series of stories. Here he tells the tale of two Courtney brothers, Sean and Garrick. They are non identical twins, and one day, decide to play with firearms. Garrick becomes a poster child for why adults should keep their guns away from children.

He is shot, and has to have his leg removed as a consequence. This colors the brothers relationship, even with their women, for a long time, and through various African historical events.

5 out of 5 stars The First is always the Best.......2007-08-10

I lived in Africa when I stumbled accross this book. Since then I have read every book ever published by Mr Smith. It's the kinda stuff that you could read over and over.

I know live in the south east USA and I am amazed that a lot of people here did not know about Wilbur Smith. So I am on a "Quest" for want of a better word to spread his work around . All my friends and co-workers love his writing. Although a big Steven King and Dean Koontz fan , Wilbur Smith writes more English -English which has a lot more passion than his US counterparts.

Other books I strongly recommend for new fans.

The Sunbird is easily his 2nd best novel and River God is a close 3rd.

But that's just my opinion. I hope you find out for yourself and enjoy the ride .

5 out of 5 stars His best!.......2007-07-28

I have been always A Wilbur Smith, I used to think River God is his best in the Egyptian series. Now I think When the Lion feeds is the best of all. Best suspense and historic writer read easily!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-11-08

I found this book in a second-hand book shop several years ago, ratty and falling apart, I absolutely devoured it! I am so glad it is being re-released, this is a true gem!

5 out of 5 stars The First Novel.......2005-11-29

This was the first novel that captured the hearts of many, thought provoking and deep in both mystery and action, Wilbur offers provoking thoughts and a view to the past, once again not all of his writings are fictional in whole; there is a breath of reality invoked in each passage and chapter. It's a fictional work, with a tender side to fact.

I now have all his works, most I have read in the past, only a few have I missed. 26 large volumes, gives hours of great reading, only three books are short. A readers dream come true.

The last book, 'The Triumph of the Sun' is still waiting to be read, I prefer paperbacks; on this occasion I chose to accept the hard cover, rather than wait.

Such an Author, a grand epitaph of a great writer, indeed. Few will feel cheated by the many works he has created, though for some the confusion of where to start can be daunting. Almost all Wilburs works can be read as seperate works of Art, but, it it's far better to start at the beginning and much more rewarding.

The Quest for Tanelorn is an important volume in Moorcock's whole Eternal Champion and Multiverse cycle.

Hawkmoon's quest for his wife is over, but now he needs to find his children, and all roads lead to Tanelorn.

They also lead to the captain of the death-ship, and a large scale Eternal Champion superhero crossover, as Hawkmoon must work with Elric, Corum and Erekose to defeat a foe, and restore some balance to the multiverse at the Conjunction.

Michael Moorcock, The Quest for Tanelorn (Berkley, 1975)

The Quest for Tanelorn ends with the words "the end of the saga of the eternal champion." A quarter-century later, of course, we know the untruth of that statement; still it's tough to read.

In this last novel of Dorian Hawkmoon and his compatriots, Hawkmoon, united with his wife, goes on the search for his children. He is pulled into a land of limbo suddenly while on a journey to Londra, there to find himself with his old friend Jhary-a-Conel, and the two of them adrift in a boat. They soon work out that they are in limbo, and have been sent there for a particular purpose...

Readers of the Eternal Champion novels will no doubt remember Hawkmoon popping up in various places throughout where he doesn't seem to have ever gone before in the series dedicated to him. Well, here it all is; the battle with Agak and Gagak (and what happens afterwards, when whichever manifestation of the Champion the series in question revolves around leaves Hawkmoon and his coterie in the ruins), the boat on the seas of limbo and its odd, blind crew; the whole mess. (One point, for those who have read the Elric series; how the Runestaff itself ends up in the tower of Voilodion Gaghnasdiak is never explained.)

All in all, the series draws to a satisfying conclusion, with the events coming in the most logical time flow they ever do in the eternal champion novels, and with the final mystery of the deaths of the gods, presented at the end of the first Corum trilogy, solved. Everyone (well almost everyone) who has survived ends up happy, and all is right with the Universe. Or so we think. ****

Yes, your children can have better relationships than you and your siblings did, says author Peter Goldenthal. In Beyond Sibling Rivalry, Goldenthal, a practicing psychologist specializing in sibling and family relationships, provides thoughtful and informative theory and practice for easing this challenging element of family life. In many ways, Beyond Sibling Rivalry is a general positive-parenting text that teaches parents to learn their child's needs by paying attention to the child. Yet, for specific examples and issues, Goldenthal focuses on sibling relationships. In 12 chapters, the book moves from predictable and preventable conflicts (preparing a child for a sibling's arrival, conflicts about sharing, and knowing when to intervene) to rivalry's more challenging issues (such as recognizing it in all its forms and compensating for the challenges that ADHD brings into the home).

Goldenthal bases his approach largely on famed psychiatrist Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy's contextual theory--an approach that considers the entire family as the context for the sibling relationship and focuses on issues of fairness and justice to help resolve them. Goldenthal stresses the parental role in creating and encouraging sibling rivalry, encourages readers to examine their own sibling relationships, and teaches them how to stop encouraging competition between children by acknowledging individual talents and skills without comparison. Beyond Sibling Rivalry is a hopeful and proactive book. Goldenthal believes the ultimate cure for sibling rivalry is self-esteem and generosity, and the final chapters focus on facilitating empathy and altruism in your kids. --Ericka Lutz

                                  Book Description

A new way to look at sibling rivalry that sees children's relationships with each other in the context of the family as a whole. This is the first book to incorporate the latest thinking regarding family relationships as important contexts in which sibling relationships develop. Unlike other books that insist that conflicts among siblings reflect jealousy and a longing for parents' undivided attention, Dr. Goldenthal asserts that all family relationships have a bearing on rivalry between brothers and sisters--not only their relationship with each other but their relationship with their parents, and even their parents' relationships with their parents. Through examples of many different types of problem family situations, he gives practical guidelines and tools for solving common and not-so-common sibling conflicts. He shows parents of young children how to institute child-rearing practices that will prevent or at least diminish future sibling conflicts, and he provides strategies for reducing friction and stress among children when they arise.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad ý but content in other books is more groundbreaking!.......2001-05-22

The book jacket claims content to be a "groundbreaking look at sibling rivalry". But with subjects like "recognize and highlight each child's unique abilities and interests" and "use rewards and praise to encourage your children to be more cooperative", the book fell way short of my expectations for new or groundbreaking ideas.

Although not alluded to in the title, the book "Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles" by Mary Sheedy Krucinka also addresses many sibling issues by helping families understand each other's temperament and communicate more effectively. A favorite section shows how to say or do things differently to avoid enraging others (i.e. a child who transitions easily may announce he's done playing and move on to the next game...leaving the slower-to-transition playmate in tears or outraged because there was no warning). She also offers tips to help children change their "bulldozing statements" (often button-pushing ones like "I'm not inviting you to my party!" or "Shut up!") into statements that persuade others to listen ("I didn't like what you said" or "I'd like a choice"). I'd recommend that book or "Siblings Without Rivalry" by Faber & Mizlash instead of "Beyond Sibling Rivalry".

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book -- highly recommend.......2000-02-21

This book not only gave me insight into my kids' relationships, but continues to help me to be the kind of parent I want to be. It's full of practical advice and I have seen quick results after applying what I learned. I am buying a few copies to give to friends with more than one child. Also a great gift idea for someone pregnant with a second child.

5 out of 5 stars Very insightful and helpful.......1999-08-29

I found this book to be very helpful, and written in a clear, easy-to-read style. The author gave me a clear understanding of how to love each of my children "best". After reading this book the first time, I immediately put into practice many of the author's suggestions and saw immediate improvement in our family. I plan to read the book a second time, with a highlighter in hand, to really "digest" all of the helpful information. I am recommending this book to any of my friends or family who are going to have more than one child.

5 out of 5 stars Our children are so much nicer to each other.......1999-03-09

When I read the chapter about predictable and preventable sibling conflicts, the author wrote as if he had placed a camera in our home. So many of the situations were familiar to me. This book is an easy read for a busy mom, and the suggestions have been right on target.

5 out of 5 stars The best parenting book I have ever read!.......1999-02-15

What I really like about Beyond Sibling Rivalry is that the examples in the book really hit home. Peter Goldenthal's suggestions were quite easy to follow. In the past week I have used some of his suggestions and I've noticed what a difference they make. Our children have been so much more helpful and nice to each other. It's a joy to watch! I recommend this book to every parent. It's probably the only parenting book you will ever need to read.

Great stuff for the beginner in this book - small histories of US denominations, coin categories to buy with caution, useful pictorial guide on grading, basics on coin shows, great tips on preservation. Probably not woth a buy for the experienced, but it is called coin collecting 101. Could have done without all the pages of state quarters. Seriously, it looks like the author was just filling pages. Overall all though, worth a buy for the novice.

This book contains many ink drawings by picasso. The drawings are not very detailed and very abstract. They mostly show a model standing in front of picasso while he is drawing. Very little detail is present. If you like picasso's abstract work and want to see more, this book is ok. Not great, but ok.

Reading this book enriches the reader's appreciation for Billy Joel's music. It paints a picture of an artist who loves to make music, and accepts fame and fortune as a mere externality. While it is a very informed run-down of Billy's first few albums from a producer's standpoint (studio musicians, track order, commentary on lyrics), it leaves virtually untouched the analysis of Billy Joel's harmonic language and sense of melody. For someone who understands music theory and wants elaboration on the COOLNESS of, for example, the brilliant chord progression in "Falling of the Rain" on "Cold Spring Harbor", it's difficult to find ultimate satisfaction. All in all, a good read, loaded with interesting tidbits about the production of Billy Joel's albums, his dreams and attitudes, and his perception by the public eye. It traces his path from nowhere to somewhere, and it is interesting to read a book published before Glass Houses, The Bridge, Stormfront, River of Dreams, etc. The book concludes at 20 years ago! -A good biography to begin an exploration of Billy's life.
