Book Description
Sam Gardner never dreamed he would be thanking God for Harmony's self-appointed general of the religious Right, Dale Hinshaw. God does indeed work in mysterious ways.
Amanda Hodge, who has been living with her Uncle Ellis and Aunt Miriam since her parents abandoned her years ago, now faces their return and their desire to be a part of her life again. Dale Hinshaw hovers on the brink of death, in dire need of a heart transplant The whole town is abuzz as the beautiful Deena Morrison marries the town's most eligible bachelor, Dr. Pierce. And in the midst of these triumphs and tragedies, Pastor Sam Gardner helps the people of Harmony negotiate the sometimes rocky road of family life, faith, and forgiveness.
Although Harmony's characters develop and grow with each novel, one thing remains constant --
Philip Gulley's ability to capture both the flavor of small-town America and the paradoxical beauty of our own humanity.

A Change of Heart.......2007-06-09
Like all of Philip Gulley's books, this one takes us to Harmony and the people who live in that small town. His characatures of the Friendly Meeting House people are not only humorous, but there are lessons to be learned as we see ourselves in some of them from time to time. We're delighted that Deena and Dr. Pierce are married, even though Dale Henshaw manages to draw that ceremony to a dramatic climax! Dale will never change, even in such a dramatic occurance as a heart transplant. Fun reading with an added life lesson to be learned every now and then.
Wonderful stories of small-town life.......2007-01-01
Sam Gardner and his delightfully dysfunctional Quaker congregation are back again as this series just seems to get better and better. There are lots of humorous moments with special Harmony events such as the Blessing of the Noodles, the Corn and Sausage Days Festival, and the Progressive Nativity Scene. There are also more serious events and a threat to the lives of two of the members of the Harmony Quaker church. There are family squabbles between Ellis and Ralph Hodge and bumpy places in the new marriage of Dr. Pierce and Deena. Again Philip Gulley makes us laugh, makes us cry, and makes us think which is a surefire recipe for a good read.
Another terrific installment on the folks at Harmony.......2006-03-08
Anyone who has stumbled across the writings of Philip Gulley will want to get the next installment in the lives of Harmony. As a person reads these books, he or she forgets that these are all fictional characterizations and a person cannot wait to hear the crazyness continue. A must-read for anyone who wants to have some light-hearted moments!
Great to visit Harmony again!.......2006-01-16
My favorite thing about reading Gulley's books is the feeling of being home. So many of the characters are so familiar!!!
Great read--I highly recommend if you've read the other Harmony books.
A delightful book.......2006-01-03
Someone picking this book up might think it is another one of those sugar coated nostalgic looks at how we like to view ourselves, or rather what America used to be like. But it's not, or not entirely, because Quaker pastor Gulley avoids romanticizing his little town. He as pastor has a sometimes rocky relationship with his congregation. Early in the book, he says that every Sunday he urges his congregation to become a new creation and every week they refuse to do it. There is plenty of bad behavior in this book, but there's also a wonderful sense of community -- of living somewhere where there are no secrets. The community also manages to come together when there are troubles, however.
The theme of this book is forgiveness. Two brothers are at odds, with one brother, Ellis -- the one who stayed home and behaved -- being unwilling to forgive his brother Ralph, an alcoholic who left with his wife 5 years ago, leaving behind their daughter Amanda to be raised by Ellis and his wife. Ralph and his wife have quit drinking and are working hard. But they want to resume their relationship with Amanda, and Ellis doesn't trust them and he can't forgive Ralph.
I love these books. Reading Gulley is a lot like wrapping yourself up in a home-made quilt.

Timeless gems.......2002-11-21
E T A Hoffmann was no ordinary man. He started life as a composer and then moved to writing stories. There are several of his sketches reproduced in this book and these show flashes of great talent too (you can see one on the cover). Hoffmann's influence is enormous in the musical world (Tchiakovsky, Delibes, Offenbach, Wagner all drew inspiration from Hoffmann). And there is something timeless in these stories even into the 21st century - there are psychological puzzles, studies of behaviour and myth, stories of automata that Philip Dick, Cordwainer Smith or Isaac Asimov would have been proud of, there are links not surprisingly into the world of music (you mustn't miss 'Rath Krespel') and the world of art (see 'Tobias Martin, Master Cooper'). Somehow Hoffmann makes ancient technologies and methods fresh and exciting - barrel making, sailing, alchemy, mining. Unfortunately the most famous of Hoffmann's stories (Nutcracker) is one of the weakest for me, and the one with the greatest reputation ('The Golden Flower Pot') suffers in this anthology by a translation that didn't engage me as well as those of other stories. My favourite stories are 'The Sand-Man', 'Rath Krespel' and 'Tobias Martin'. Here's a brief quote from 'Tobias Martin' that appealed to me especially: 'It sometimes happens that the deepest sorrow, if it can find tears and words, dissolves into a mild melancholy, so that perhaps even a gentle shimmer of hope begins to beam faintly through the heart.' Hoffmann is often sentimental but this is more than offset by an unpredictable exoticness.
Fantasia with Automata and Vegetable King, etc........2000-11-01
Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann was born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm - he changed his name in honour of Mozart, and music was his first and possibly greatest love. He was a brilliant critic, a talented painter and caricaturist and, by all accounts, a very serviceable composer. All these elements - music, the pictorial sense, and the critic's sharp probing intelligence as displayed in the present review - feed into the stories, which perhaps is why they turned out to be his most lasting achievement. The ten in this collection are tales of the fantastic (Hoffmann is also credited by some with inventing the detective story with "Madame de Scudery", not included here, which predates, and may have influenced, Edgar Allan Poe's pioneering efforts in the genre) and include the four which provided the basis for Offenbach's opera. The style, like Mozart's, is bright, energetic and often comic; the substance, as with caricature, mixes the bizarre with the mundane in a fashion quite unlike that of anyone else you've ever read, even among Hoffmann's batallions of readers, followers and imitators. The general effect is strikingly original, often disturbing, sometimes hilarious and, not infrequently, loony - not at all what one would expect from the last of the German Romantics. This volume also boasts several illustrations scrawled by the author, a helpful introduction by E F Bleiler, and Dover Books' usual robust construction and reasonable pricing. Like Lord Dunsany, Hoffmann has been prized more as an influence than a writer. His work has certainly had an incalculable influence on modern fantasy fiction, as well as the detective story, science fiction and the 19th-century "novel of ideas" (Dostoyevsky noted Hoffmann's psychological insight as an influence on his own). But his own best work falls into none of these categories, inventing them all in the service of the author's vision - the mark of a true original, and the best possible reason to read Hoffmann for himself.

Hoffman Rules!.......1998-09-04
Hoffmans stories are an obvious influence on fantasy classics such as the OZ books and Alice in Wonderland. I just discovered Hoffmans work and I'm totally in awe. H.P. love craft can't hold a candle to Hoffman's supernatural imagination. His writing is not stuffy or archaic at all. He writes in a quick moving vortex of fantastic visual and emotional concepts casting a spell on the reader. totally unexpected.... totally unique!
All fantasy authors should read this book. It boggles the mind!

The Great Book of Amber: The Complete Amber Chronicles, 1-10 (Chronicles of Amber)

Customer Reviews:
The best 'Amber' reference to date, but not without faults........2003-10-09
Krulik's "Complete Amber Sourcebook" is a lot of fun. Arranged in encyclopedic format, it contains numerous and varied entries about most of the major people, places, things, and events described in Roger Zelazny's 'Amber' novels. Although there are some glaring omissions, Zelazny is said to have approved and personally edited this material before publication; Zelazny's involvement certainly gives the book legitimacy, although its degree of 'canonicity' is up to the individual reader.
The best parts of this book are arguably those dealing with Amber and its immediate surroundings ('Amber,' the city, and 'Amber,' the region). There are extensive notes on language and history. The book also provides colorful background on enigmatic subjects that Zelazny mentioned casually in his fiction, such as the Moon-Riders of Ghanesh, or the deaths of Osric and Finndo.
I think that a lot of the negative feedback I've seen about this book is because it challenges individual preconceptions about things dear to the hearts of Zelazny's loyal fans. Krulik also peppers his encyclopedic entries with original quotations or dialogues from Zelazny's characters, which occasionally get too cute to stomach. There also seems to be undue attention paid to extremely minute or obscure details (sheet music for Corwin's "Ballad of the Water Crossers?") while more obvious topics go unexplored. All in all, though, I thought that this was a great reference for the serious 'Amber' fan.
Good book on a difficult topic.......1999-10-29
I know the author and have discussed the book with him. He is one of a very, very limited number of people who have interviewed Zelazny in regard to the Amber series. Ted's book is well written and is a good source for information in regard to the long and somewhat complicated series.
Strike "complete" from the title and you might be satisfied!.......1999-09-25
Despite the author's attempt, the book misses on many levels, the least of which is cross-referencing Zelazny's material instead of 'fluffing' the story he wrote. The Amber language and calendar elements are good. The timeline vs. Shadow Earth is interesting. The omission of Mirelle, Lora, Carmella, while including characters much less central is puzzling. Especially when the author states he had Zelazny's ear to answer such questions. Fans will respect what is included and moan over what is missed here. The geneology chart doesn't agree with other sources. You'll find no mention of Shroudlings, or other elements from the short stories.
A good sourcebook.......1999-06-15
Okay, so the author probably took a few liberties here and there...this is still a darned good sourcebook for any Amberphile. The topics are pretty extensive and what liberties that are taken do not seem to contradict, but rather enhance the experience of reading the books. Now if only someone will come out with an Amber tribute series of shortstories...
Good reference, but not the definitive work........1998-07-07
Theodore Krulik takes on the daunting task of compiling the people and places of Roger Zelazny's Amber into a reference work. While filled with detail, the work suffers from Krulik's apparent 'invention' of history and details -- there is no mention of specific discussions with Zelazny, so these speculations are far from being canon -- and a few curious omissions.
However, Krulik does shine in his notes on Thari, the tongue of Amber, also mentioning R. McAllister's The Secret Languages of Ireland (available through amazon.com!).

Walker was the Pioneer of Natural Health.......2005-11-24
All of Walker's books are excellent resources. Here is THE man who invented 'juicing carrots'. Along with that, he showed that eating natural, mostly raw healthly diet was the key to vibrant healt. He also had a major emphasis on colon cleansing. If you read any of his books you will be quickly overcome with a desire to have your insides washed out. believe me! and believe Dr. Walker, who afterall lived 'vibrantly' to an age well over 100. He has quite a few great little books and it seems like the rest of the world is just now catching on to what he had taught for decades.

Good Book of notgelds.......2006-07-03
Very good book of german notgeld, other countries are listed, very fews pictures of other countries
Not what it could be.......2006-05-28
This book says it all in the title, except I'm not sure what they mean by guide. There is a short introduction of the author blah, blah... The notgeld is listed and easy enough to find but no information, like engraver/artist, where it was pressed, how many were made or how many in circulation, in fact it tells you nothing (and most do not not photos) except there is a general/vague 1-7 scale of rarity with no pricing or suggest value. this was merely a checklist.
Don't leave home without it.......2004-12-10
An excellent reference to all kinds of Notgeld from many countries.
Table of Contents
* Introduction
* Issuing Cities: Alphabetical by Countries
* Periodical Abbreviations
* Bibliography
* Country Abbreviations
* Issuing Cities Alphabetical
The introduction gives a fairly thorough explanation of Notgeld in English and German. The book is designed as a checklist with a box to mark off as you find what you want. It makes no pretence to pricing. The Bibliography is extensive enough to be worth the book alone.
Notgeld Images.......2001-07-31
This guide contains a list of emergency money issuing authorities, mainly cities. The reader will see many images, some of them in color, to have an idea of how interesting collecting emergency money may be and will have access to a bibliography which may help to search for a more comprehensive information.

Book Description
This new Catalogue Raisonné, Part III in the series on Natural History, is based on the collection originally formed by Prince Federico Cesi in the ear- ly 17th century and later acquired by Cassiano. These drawings constitute the first truly scientific study of fossilized woods and are executed with such finesse, skill and detail that they will be of immense interest both to art-historians and to historians of science. The drawings, the majority of which have remained unstudied and unpublished until now, include specimens of wood and animal fossils, ammonites and concretions, pyrits and baked clays, as well as a series of field drawings giving the sites where these specimens were found. The introductory essays discuss the background to Cesi's project as well as the importance of the drawings to the history of seventeenth- century culture and science. 242 illustrations, of which 62 are in color.

This book captures some favorite Zappa quotes and stories........1998-12-11
This book (by Miles, not Watson) is a great place to start to learn the important points in Zappa history. It shows most of the famous pictures of Zappa throughout the years. The small, story-like presentation makes for fast reading and its fun to skip around. The book in no way attempts to analyse the modern day composer, just quotes or interviews. There is no Watson, Poodle Play here, just fun! Other books would better suit the long-time Zappaphile!
