Book Description

The civil war that is tearing England asunder in the year 1643 has not yet touched Dorcas Slythe, a secretly rebellious young Puritan woman living in the countryside south of London, who longs to escape the safe, pious tyranny of her father.

The chance appears with the arrival of Toby Lazender, dashing scion of a powerful royalist family. It is he who renames her "Campion," awakening her to a bold, hitherto unknown passion . . . and to a mysterious and perilous destiny. With the discovery of an intricately wrought gold seal—one of four that, when joined, will reveal a great secret and uncover an enormous fortune—Campion's quest begins.

Love, riches, and redemption await her at the end of her perilous adventure. Or death.

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-08-06

This is excellent Cornwell historical fiction.

The characters, the action, and the mystery were well woven into an engrossing novel of old England.

I continue to totally enjoy and recommend Cornwell.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not "woman friendly".......2007-07-26

I thought this book started out terrific, by the time I got 2/3 of the way through, it seemed simply a device to put a helpless, childlike woman through a series of captures/tortures so she could be rescued by a hero. Perhaps I am used to today's more modern heroines who show some resourcefulness and grit, or perhaps I missed the point of this book altogether.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2006-11-13

I wasn't sure what to expect, as I had never read Cornwell before -- although I understand this is not his usual forte -- battles and bloodshed. This was a very quick and entertaining read, with surprises coming around every corner, and a VERY BIG surpise at the end. I thought I had guessed it 3/4 of the way through the book, but the author kept throwing herrings in there and I was beginning to think I guessed wrong, and you don't know for sure until the very last page.

The hero and heroine were very sweet, true love at first sight and the villains were truly evil and despicable. The author keeps things authentic and pulls no punches, you will know what it was like to see someone killed (yes the blood gets everywhere) and to be in a 17th century prison cell (it's not pretty).

Four stars instead of five because I thought the search for the witches teat in front of the court was a bit over the top, while the love scenes between Toby and Campion were almost chaste in comparison.

Note, although just over 500 pages, this is a small paperback and read very quickly. A pleasant way to spend your Sunday afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Romance with Military Overtones.......2006-10-09

Bernard Cornwell is known for his historical military fiction so it is not surprising to find this book set in the time of the English Civil War. What is surprising is that the military aspects are secondary. It is an adventure story but it is first and foremost a love story. It is also well done.

Dorcas Slythe is the unloved and ill treated daughter of a Puritan family. She is a beautiful girl and Puritans, as a class, tend to be distrustful of beauty but one gets the impression that it is not only for her beauty that Dorcas is ill used. There is something else going on.

When her father dies, Dorcas learns that she is the subject of a mysterious Covenant. She realizes that there is some money involved but she doesn't really understand very much about it except that her family is eager to marry her off to an oaf. She wants none of it. She is in love with a boy from a nearby castle and resolves to run away and try to learn about this covenant.

During the course of her adventures, she gets embroiled in the Civil War and finds love. She also finds loss, betrayal and adventure in spades. It is hard to know who to trust in this one. It's a good book and worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars a very good read!.......2005-09-15

Romance, adventure and a bit of mystery thrown in too. Set in 1640's England, Bernard and Judy Cornwell give the reader a good feel for the puritan era sweeping through London and of the English rebellion. A story of faith in God and in love. It stays exciting 'til the very last page.

    Book Description

In 1651, Cromwell led his soldiers into battle for the last time against the Royalists at Worcester. By the end, the Royalist cause was shattered, with 3,000 dead and up to 10,000 captured. The first detailed account of the last battle in the Civil War, described by Romwell as a "crowning mercy," uses original sources and first-hand accounts that include the fate of the thousands of Scottish prisoners. Extensive appendices make it a valuable resource for further study.

                  The Knights Templar

They had all joined taking three vows: poverty, chastity, and obedience…for they were monks: warrior monks, dedicated to theprotection of pilgrims in the Holy Land -- until stories spread by anavaricious king who wanted their wealth for his own destroyed the order.

There was one knight, however, who escaped the stake, vowing justiceas he watched his innocent brothers die.

                  A Dastardly Deed

When the mutilated body of midwife and healer Agatha Kyteler is discovered in a hedge one frozen wintry morning, it at first appears the lack of clues will render the crime unsolvable -- until a frightened local youth inexplicably flees his village and a hue and cry is raised. Sir Baldwin Furnshill, once a Knight Templar, however, has doubts about the boy's guilt, and enlists friend and bailiff of Lydford Castle, Simon Puttock, in the hunt for a murderer. But what they seek lies somewhere on the darker side of the village of Wefford, beneath layers of jealousy, suspicion, and hatred -- and the buried truth could prove fatal to anyone who disturbs it.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Second in the Series.......2006-08-21

I am writing this review after reading this book for the second time. In fact I am re-reading all the Knights Templar Mysteries written by Michael Jecks. I enjoyed them thoroughly the first time around and I am still finding them enjoyable now. This one is the second in the series.

Sir Baldwin de Furnshill, ex Knight Templar has now become established at his Manor he received on the death of his brother and has become one of Devon's leading law officers, Keeper of the King's Peace, no less. He soon find that the county of Devon is no sleepy backwater where nothing happens from one day to the next.

In the village of Wefford the midwife and healer Agatha Kyteler is widely regarded by the superstitious villagers as a witch, but she seems to have plenty of callers. When her badly mutilated body is found in a hedge there is little or no evidence to point to who might have killed her.

Sir Simon is called in and the villagers soon find that although the knight is an honourable and fair minded man. He is determined to leave no stone unturned until he brings the killer[s] to justice.

                  5 out of 5 stars Abbot's Gibbet.......2006-07-04

Like all good mystery writers, Jecks is a master at creating a situation with which his readers can empathize. The difference is that his characters range from peasants to merchants, villiens to nobility and include a fair range of clergy. The settings and detective work are superb; the crimes varied and motives comprehensible. A master is at work here.
I've read 5 so far and can't wait for my next shipment!

                  3 out of 5 stars A 3.5 rating.......2005-04-06

The two main positives, to me, are the characters and their relationships with each other and those around them, and the sense of place created by the author. When he describes riding through deep, freezing snow, I'm ready to reach for a blanket. But the best thing is that this is a good, basic, who-dun-it mystery. I shall definitely keep following this series.

                  3 out of 5 stars Average book.......2005-01-21

While this book is not terrible, it is simply average. I will not be reading any of the other books in the series. I bought this book b/c I enjoy mysteries and enjoy the time period. Disappointing.

                  3 out of 5 stars Didn't grab me.......2004-12-31

Merchant's Partner is a business like medieval mystery. It has all the right indgridients and has an interesting plot as well as a likeable lead character but somehow it never really rises above adequate.

An old woman is found murdered and the local pretty boy is suspected of being the killer. Our hero, a former Templar knight (imagine a 12th century Catholic Jedi) must find the killer and prevent more murders. Along the way he's bedazzled by a sexy widow who may know more about the murder than she should.

It's a solid begining but the story is marred by a horribly slow pace, and by historical blunders. The wolf scene was beautifully written but it rejects both history and animal behavior. The author also occasionally makes the mistake of making people from the past think and talk like folks do today.

There are things to like about this book but there wasn't enough to make me want to stick with the series.

                    2 out of 5 stars Minus 1 star for a mixed beginning.......2003-05-02

I'm glad to see Asprin back to writing on a regular schedule.

These two authors 'invoke' a good story with personable chemistry between the protagonists. So why only two stars?

The beginning, so important to hooking a reader, is a jumble of mixed messages, and doesn't do justice to the plot or characters assembled.

Never confuse a reader as to whether you are going to "romp" or deliver careful characters. When the material starts out slyly poking fun with odd government agencies like "O.O.P.S.I.E.", you expect you are going to read "screwball comedy", which is a place the authors have creative gifts.

But this is actually a murder and black magic story -- a pretty good one.

If you can roll past the first thirty pages of mixed signals, you might find a nice story here.

1 out of 5 stars Least from one of the best........2002-01-01

I read about the first 30 pages and could go no further. The Myth series and the Phule series are both excellent, and hopefully Mr. Asprin's next book will be equal to his past works. Unfortunately "License Invoked" falls far short of expectations.

                    2 out of 5 stars Not a successful collaboration.......2001-04-02

Having been a fan of Robert Asprin for a number of years, and having been impressed with prior collaborations of Jody Lynn Nye, I found "License Invoked" a disappointment. Little about this book has the ring of truth necessary for a good fantasy. The characters have an unpleasant, one-dimensional feel to them: a perpetually annoyed, insecure, English government agent; an upper-class Englishwoman masquerading as an Irish 'acid-folk' singer; a French Quarter denizen on the government payroll. Combined with goverment agencies specialising in the paranormal (X-Files anyone), a Satanic version of tele-evangelism, and you are left with a mixture that doesn't jell. There is a certain disconnected air to the story, as if neither Asprin or Nye had any real interest in the tale.

                    3 out of 5 stars Almost magic.......2001-03-28

Fionna Kenmare, lead singer of the Irish acid-folk rock band, Green Fire, is sure someone is trying to kill her. But the only person who sees or hears the attacks is Fiona herself, which convinces her that they are magical in nature so when the band gets ready to tour the United States, her father calls in some favors to get her a bodyguard. Liz Mayfield, with the British Government Office of Occult and Paranormal Sightings Investigation, is assigned to protect her. Liz is probably the only person in her department who actually believes in good and evil, for the rest it is just a cushy job. And with that idea Robert Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye set the stage for a hilarious romp through New Orleans in their latest, License Invoked. With help of her American counterpart from the FBI, Boo-Boo, who appears to know everyone in New Orleans, Liz must battle the most fearsome magical onslaught of her life, all the while trying to convince everyone that it is real but at the same time, keep the press from finding out so that both governments are embarrassed. With the help and hindrance of a whole cast of odd and off-beat characters, Liz must work to defeat not only the minions of Satan, who wish to kill Fionna because she is a good influence on our children, but the non-believers who would try to assign a rational explanation to the events around them. Definitely a great twist on the good v evil theme. Not as good as Asprin's Thieves World series, but still a good read.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2001-03-16

I'll usually buy anything by Robert Asprin - his "Cold Cash War" makes my top ten sci-fi books ever. This book read like a poor attempt to create another Thieves World franchise. The characters aren't engaging, the events fairly ho-hum. Save your time. Read his Myth series instead.

5 out of 5 stars Wilderness First Aid for the real world outdoorsman.......2003-07-08

This book is a comprehensive guide to First Aid in the wilderness. It points out many injuries and illnesses that you'd commonly find while in the wilderness, and easy-to-follow explainations of what they are, what caused them, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. This is perfect for a Boy Scout or Girl Scout class in First Aid for an upcoming trip; as I use it as the text for the class I teach.
The only area I would say that it is lacking in is the serious, life-threatening injuries, ie cardiopulmonary arrest, tension pneumothorax, etc. However, to be perfectly honest, in the wilderness, injuries like that are very difficult to survive if you are not easily acessable by EMS. Additionally, those injuries are complex, and the treatments aren't always easy to do in the wilderness, much to the contrary, in fact. So understanding them might be important to the field leader, but I don't dwell on the severe injuries too much when I teach because they are difficult to understand, and the treatment is always "Get them to an ambulace and to a hospital as fast as you can."

I highly recommend this book for all Wilderness First aid, and for Mountaineering First Aid.

Some classic Jewish foods are analogous to Chinese versions-hence the title, From Lokshen to Lo Mein. Lokshen are Jewish noodles used in many recipes, an analog to Lo Mein noodles used in Chinese cooking. Along with Don Siegel’s favorite Chinese kosher recipes, the author includes some comments on the connection of Jews and Chinese culture, where to get kosher Chinese ingredients, a few jokes about Jews and Chinese food, a short section on what 'kosher' means for those unfamiliar with Jewish dietary laws, and digressions on Chinese cooking techniques and products. Have fun cooking authentic Chinese dishes while reading interesting topics: The Evolution of Chinese Cooking, The Jewish Experience in China, The American-Jewish Chinese Connection, The Chinese Kitchen Cabinet, The Drop Dead Tip for Making a Chinese Dinner.

The opening chapter focuses on Cameron's early life in northern Ontario, then follows him to Orange County, California, where he took his first film job with schlock-horror film master Roger Corman.  His apprenticeship with Corman was elemental in Cameron's creation of The Terminator, his first major film, which was a huge international success, proving Cameron had the talent and insight necessary to create blockbuster movies.

With Hollywood's door now wide open, Cameron went on to make some of the most expensive, popular films in cinematic history--a second Terminator film, the Oscar award-winning Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies and now Titanic

3 out of 5 stars been there, heard that.......1999-01-06

If you've done any significant reading on James Cameron through magazine articles or seen him speak in interviews, you've already gotten most of what you'll get out of this book. It covers more personal background, and gives more detail on the early work (Pirahna II) than is usually discussed, but there is far too much Cameron worshipping in this book and not enough thorough details.

3 out of 5 stars An unauthorized book on Jim Cameron.......1998-05-08

I have to agree with the comment by SVK, it may not be worth buying if you've read too much of all sources Chris derived to use for his so-called "unauthorized" book. Other than that, it's more interesting to learn more about the man who blew the audiences away and held Hollywood hostage at his feet. Paula Parisi's book would be a safe bet to satisfy your appetite for knowledge of the wildly successful and most recognized filmmaking genuis since Spielberg.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......1998-03-30

For those who have become fans of Cameron because of Titanic, this book might be a pleasant introduction to this filmmaker. But to others who have read Cameron interviews/stories in magazines like Premiere, Esquire, Movieline, etc...this book is an outright bore. None of the information is new and the quotes are all ripped from past interviews. This book is on par with the Leo DiCaprio books that litter the Times Best Seller list right now, which isn't saying much.
