Book Description

AN UNFORGETTABLE HEROINE,

A KING MISUNDERSTOOD BY HISTORY,

A LOVE STORY THAT HAS NEVER BEEN TOLD

In A Rose for the Crown, we meet one of history's alleged villains through the eyes of a captivating new heroine -- the woman who was the mother of his illegitimate children, a woman who loved him for who he really was, no matter what the cost to herself.

As Kate Haute moves from her peasant roots to the luxurious palaces of England, her path is inextricably intertwined with that of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III. Although they could never marry, their young passion grows into a love that sustains them through war, personal tragedy, and the dangerous heights of political triumph.

Anne Easter Smith's impeccable research provides the backbone of an engrossing and vibrant debut from a major new historical novelist.

3 out of 5 stars More sappy romance than historical fiction.......2007-07-15

I read a lot of historical fiction centered on the Tudor and post-Tudor periods. I enjoyed learning something about the War of the Roses and the period leading up to Tudor times. I agree with another reviewer who stated that she wished the fiction had been more historical. Yes, the background is historically accurate, but the romance (as Ms. Smith admits) is mostly invented. I would have enjoyed the story so much more if it hadn't so frequently read like a sappy romance novel. And, for some reason, I often found myself confused by all of the similar names and titles of the characters (but that may just be a fault of my own). In general, I thought it was a pleasant, interesting and fast read; worth a try.

5 out of 5 stars An evocative read.......2007-07-02

I read this book while flying home from the Historical Novel Society conference and was immediately transported to 15th century England. Anne Easter Smith evokes not only the time and place but also all the sensory perceptions of what it must have been like to live at this time. The plot hummed along seamlessly allowing me to relive Richard III's story as well as that of an ordinary woman living in extraordinary times. I was so totaly immersed in this terrific book that I quite forgot all the discomforts of flying in our so called modern age! An evocative read such as this should not be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The journey begins...........2007-06-13

My name is Lynn and I'm a Richard III addict.

And it's all the fault of this book and Anne Easter Smith. I purchased this book because, although I love reading about the Middle Ages and the English monarchy, I realized how little I knew about Richard III -- and thought the book, while fiction, might enlighten me a bit.

Well, it did. And also lightened my pocketbook because it started me on a journey down a road where I have purchased numerous books about Richard III (fiction and non-fiction) and even joined the Richard III society.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's interested in that time period. It's well-written but not ponderous -- a good read -- and, along with SUNNE IN SPLENDOUR (Sharon Kaye Penman) a good place to start on a Ricardian journey!

Loyaultie me lie!!

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and Wonderful.......2007-04-10

Bringing this history forward, Anne Easter Smith tells this complicated story with such ease! She reveals Richard's history through delicately landscaped historical facts from another time, another world. This book, written by researched and beautifully managed language, brings a new way of seeing the era and the Richard I did not know.. And from the viewpoint of a woman is to know his heart rather than the history that has kept his heart hidden. It is tender and terrifying. There is a world revealed here, a world that many have not heard, seen or known, until now.

3 out of 5 stars Get Real.......2007-03-19

I really wanted to give this story at least a four, but I just couldn't. It does have many excellent points. As an avid reader and medieval history fan I was delighted to find a novel so thick. I think it took me like a week to read it, and for that I'm grateful as I go through most books in a day or two. And the story itself is very involving on every level EXCEPT when the authoress is dealing with the subject of Richard III and that's where I take major issue.

The way Richard III is depicted in this novel is shameless revisionist writing, and that's fine. Everyone has their opinion and the authoress is entitled to allow her novel to reflect her own. She says Richard III was maligned by contemporaries who influenced the modern view of him and this holds water if one is going by the work of historians alone, but I don't. In this book Richard III is portrayed as being some kind of angelic being who does no wrong. Any and every crime he may have been associated with he's depicted as having been framed. He's a saint. He has clean hands. It makes him the most boring character in the whole novel. And it doesn't jibe with historical fact.

Look past the personal biases and consider the family and times Richard III came from. His entire family, and the entire medieval warrior aristocracy was known for being cold and ruthless. I have never heard this disputed. And yet in this book Richard is the anomaly. He is nothing like his brother's who used any means at their disposal to acquire power. I am not saying Richard is guilty of killing his nephews in the Tower. I am saying the sainted hero of this novel has no relation to what the man was proably like in real life.

The whole irony is had the authoress portrayed Richard with a harder edge, or with a more complex character - a good side and a bad side - it would have made for an even more compelling story than the whitewash results we see here. As it is the "main" love story in the novel reads like a common fairytale romance that fans of this novel seem to lap up. And she should have skipped the graphic love scenes between Richard and the heroine just like I had too. The mental image of Richard III making it with anyone just doesn't do it for me.

Imagine a cross between the films Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love (without the latter's jokes) and you'll get some idea of this first entry in Karen Harper's Bess Tudor series of historical mysteries. It's 1558, and the 25-year-old Elizabeth, her life and family threatened by the dying, jealous Queen Mary, actually dresses up like a boy and slips off to Hever Castle. There she bonds with the spirit of her mother, Anne Boleyn, and solves several murders.

In lesser hands, such a plot might seem unlikely. But, as she has done in such previous books as Black Orchid, Dark Road Home, and Empty Cradle, Harper stills disbelief and quickens interest with her impeccable research and competent prose. The former high school English teacher knows how to create characters that leap to life despite the accumulated weight of previous books and films: her Elizabeth is a smart, sad, tough, and feisty original, fully worthy of both her mother and her father's heritage. It should be great fun to watch her grow and solve future mysteries. --Dick Adler

    Book Description

The letter came in secret, with a pearl eardrop from an aunt long thought dead, resurrecting the forbidden past. Banished by her spiteful half sister, Queen Mary, to Hatfield House in the English countryside, twenty-five-year-old Princess Elizabeth cannot refuse the summons. The Boleyns are in grave danger. And Elizabeth, daughter of Anne Boleyn, is marked for death by a master poisoner whose reign of terror may have royal sanction.

With her few loyal retainers, Elizabeth escapes to Kent. Here, in her ancestral Hever Castle, now held by the Queen's loyalists, Elizabeth seeks to unravel the plot against her. And here, in the embrace of intrigue and betrayal, the princess must find a brilliant, powerfully connected killer--before the killer finds her....

    2 out of 5 stars disappointing.........2007-09-06

Tedious details repeated over and over, an unlikable main character, and historical references not fully explained, make for a rather disappointing "Elizabethan mystery" novel. The secondary characters were far more interesting (and sympathetic) than Elizabeth, but alas!--we, as readers, do not get much more than a few fleeting pages in their points of view. Also, a final reference page noting what was historical and what was fiction would have been greatly appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars THE POYSON GARDEN.......2007-07-31

Could not put down the book once I started. Took every opportunity to continue reading and was transported to the era of Elizabethan countries I so love. At once ordered the next few in series. Excellant work by Karen Harper.

4 out of 5 stars No sight of Helen Mirren.......2007-06-16

I enjoyed this quite a bit. The dialogue rang true without being overly burdened by fake Shakespearian touches.

3 out of 5 stars Does Require Major Suspension of Disbelief.......2007-04-29

"The Poyson Garden" is first in a mystery series by Karen Harper, retired English teacher, that gives us England's famous 16th century Queen Elizabeth in a new light, as a detective. It's fun, light on its feet, moves quickly, and competently written. Further, the author evidently did some homework.

We meet Elizabeth as she's a relatively young woman of 25. Her older half-sister Mary is Queen. Mary's Catholic, making her name as Bloody Mary by persecution of Protestants. (It was their infamous bluebeard father, King Henry VIII, who broke with Catholicism in order to divorce Mary's mother, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Elizabeth's, Anne Boleyn). Elizabeth's childhood and life before we meet her have certainly been anxiety-provoking: Henry had her mother beheaded when she failed to produce a son, and Elizabeth herself has twice been imprisoned in the menacing Tower of London, that few ever left alive. In the book at hand, we are meant to think that Elizabeth's anxiety continues. There seems to be a poisoner at work, trying to kill Elizabeth and her family, the Boleyns. We're meant to believe that Elizabeth fears her half sister's behind the poisoner, and that she, Elizabeth, will not live to inherit the throne. We're further meant to believe that the Queen in waiting therefore takes up detection in self-defense.

Unfortunately, the book's history is a little wonky. Most significantly, it gives us an Elizabeth quite unlike the well-documented queen with which history presents us. So it does require a major suspension of disbelief: perhaps too major for some.

3 out of 5 stars Take it for what it is.......2007-04-09

I was ecstatic upon discovering this series. Elizabeth I is one of my favorite historical figures. Within the first few pages, I was disappointed by her portrayal. Compared with other historical fiction I have read, her depiction is flat and strictly according to academic descriptions of her character. Also, though Harper clearly did thorough research into the Tudor period, at time it simply seems as though she is showing off her acquired vocabulary. However, this was not intended to compete for the Nobel prize in literature; it's meant for entertainment, and once the requisite suspension of disbelief is accomplished, it's an excellent mystery and work of escapism. Recommended for car rides or plane flights - or rainy weekends - when all you want is something to occupy you and take you away.

Sonya Taaffe, Postcards from the Province of Hyphens (Prime, 2005)

Sonya Taaffe is one of the modern masters of the written word. Why is this? It's somewhat hard to explain, mostly because great writers each have a particular greatness. In Taaffe's case, I think, what happens is that while her word choice strays from the path of normal conversation, it never strays far enough that one gets tangled up in one's own feet reaching for the dictionary; thus, one has the sensation of reading something out of the ordinary without going as far afield as, for example, one gets in some of Cormac McCarthy's novels. Combined with a slightly off-kilter (for Americans, anyway) sense of diction and grammar-- which comes, no doubt, from a number of years studying classical languages-- the overall effect is one of studying work in a foreign language, but being able to read it in one's native tongue. Assuming, of course, one's native tongue is English. (If it reads like this in other languages, without translation, then we've really got something for the papers.)

Taaffe is part of a new, as yet to my knowledge nameless, movement in the written word, one that blends fantasy (be it high, low, or anywhere in between) with that highbrow litt-rat-chaw stuff that most fantasists wouldn't be caught dead reading. This is nothing new; most recently, the horror-of-absence writers (the most notable being Kathe Koja and Lucius Shepard) trod this ground, and trod it well. What Taaffe and her contemporaries (Catherynne M. Valente being the name that comes most readily to mind) is that while Koja et al. work rather hard to keep their language in the gritty of the everyday, the industrial, Taaffe and co. reborrow the richness of the language of fantasy; where you'd not think of a Lucius Shepard story as a fantasy were it not to contain ghost ships, talking lizards, or the like, Taaffe's writing approaches a mythic quality simply on word choice, the allusions made and the like rather than the subject matter. While her subject matter normally does run to the fantastic, it doesn't always, and it's in these pieces where the momentum of the work can be seen; "Storm Gods of the Connecticut River Valley" is an obvious choice for an example.

    "...Rain washes his spectacles,
patiently, in streams; his hair never
blows askew. Come closer, and carefully,
to hear what keeps wind and tempest tuned
and true: the low notes are thunder, and
all the thousand voices of the falling rain."
(--"Storm Gods of the Connecticut River Valley")

Postcards from the Province of Hyphens is ostensibly Taaffe's first collection of poetry, but this is belied both by the fact that Singing Innocence and Experience contains poetry and this volume contains a few very short pieces of fiction; when it comes right down to it, isn't the messing about with the genre of the very things contained in the book, no matter what the outside of it says, just another part of the, for lack of a better term, genre-crossdressing going on here?

This is, simply put, beautiful work. Those who are already fans of poetry, if you're not yet aware of Sonya Taaffe, you should be; those who have not yet glommed onto the fact that poetry is the living soul of society may want to go for Singing Innocence and Experience first. You'll still get a bit of poetry there, and it should convince you that, eventually, you want to read this book, as well. In either case, evetnaully, you will likely get round to reading this book, and you will find it worthy. **** ½

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful use of words.......2005-06-27

Sonya Taaffe is, first of all, a wordsmith. She knows language and she knows how to use it to evoke emotion. This collection features an excellent sampling of her poetry and some short fiction, each piece evoking a different mood, from the raging to the sublime.

Each reader will take something different from this collection, of course, as befits fine poetry. As with so much of Taaffe's work, mythology is strong here. For me, standout pieces include Matlacihuatl's Gift, which won a Rhysling Award, Etemmu, which evokes old memories of Mesopotamia, and When You Came To Troy, which is raw and brutal in its honest depiction of the true horrors of war.

A gem of a collection. Highly recommended.

Books about the education of physicians are so plentiful they practically constitute their own subgenre. For starters, there's Melvin Konner's Becoming a Doctor, A Not Entirely Benign Procedure by Perri Klass, and several books by Robert Marion (including Learning to Play God, Rotations, and The Intern Blues). Joining the field is Ellen Lerner Rothman with a memoir of her years at Harvard Medical School. It's a workman-like account of learning the art and science of medicine in the era of HMOs, in which paperwork seems to have replaced healing as the main product of hospital bureaucracy. Rothman wrestles with the dilemmas of compassion and objectivity as she encounters patients, learns procedures, and prepares to don the white coat that symbolizes physician competence in a world of backless patient gowns.

Of particular interest are Rothman's accounts of the rabid fan base among medical students for a certain top-rated medical TV drama; they study its jargon almost as exhaustively as they review the physiology of the heart. "It was just like on ER," she notes following an encounter with a traumatic cardiac arrest that ended with the patient's death. The lines between pop culture and science are ever blurred. --Patrizia DiLucchio

    Book Description

White Coat is Dr. Ellen Lerner Rothman's vivid account of her four years at Harvard Medical School. Describing the grueling hours and emotional hurdles she underwent to earn the degree of M.D., Dr. Rothman tells the story of one woman's transformation from a terrified first-year medical studen into a confident, competent doctor.

Touching on the most relevant issues in medicine today--such as HMOs, aIDS, and assisted suicide--Dr. Rothman recounts her despair and exhilaration as a medical student, from the stress of exams to th hard-won rewards that came from treating patients.

The anecdotes in White Coat are funny, heartbreaking, and at times horrifying. Each chapter taes us deeper into Dr. Rothman's medical school experience, illuminating her struggle to walk the line between too much and not enough intimacy with her patients. For readers of Perri Klass and Richard Selzer, Dr. Rothman looks candidly at medicine and presents an unvarnished perspective on a subject that matters to us all. White Coat opens the infamously closed door between patient and doctor in a book that will change the way we look at our medical establishment.

In White Coat, Ellen Rothman offers a vivid account of her four years at one of the best medical schools in the country, and opens the infamously closed door between patient and doctor. Touching on today's most important medical issues -- such as HMOs, AIDS, and assisted suicide -- the author navigates her way through despair, exhilaration, and a lot of exhaustion in Harvard's classrooms and Boston's hospitals to earn the indisputable title to which we entrust our lives.

With a thoughtful, candid voice, Rothman writes about a wide range of experiences -- from a dream about holding the hand of a cadaver she had dissected to the acute embarrassment she felt when asking patients about their sexual histories. She shares her horror at treating a patient with a flesh-eating skin infection, the anxiety of being "pimped" by doctors for information (when doctors quiz students on anatomy and medicine), as well as the ultimate reward of making the transformation and of earning a doctor's white coat.

For readers of Perri Klass, Richard Selzer, and the millions of fans of ER, White Coat is a fascinating account of one woman's journey through school and into the high-stakes drama of the medical world.

5 out of 5 stars This book led me to where I am now.......2006-10-16

After reading about her experiences, I made my decision to go into the field of medicine (as opposed to nursing or PA). This book may have been one of the determining factors in leading me to be who I am, and who I will be in the future!

    2 out of 5 stars Ugh..........2006-09-06

Kind of a big bulk of dull recounts, set in a fog of years past. I find it hard to remember anything special about it. I strongly suggest in its place: On Call: A Doctor's Days and Nights in Residency, by Emily R. Transue, or Another Day In The Frontal Lobe, Katrina Firlik. These books are written with the depth that White Coat lacks.

Also, is it normal for a second year medical student to say something like this?
(group of med students watching 'ER')
Girl points at TV, says: "V-fib! That's ventricular fibrillation!!"

    Woah! I'm actually learning!!

2 out of 5 stars OK, OK, I GET IT!! .......2006-07-21

You don't like fat people! That's totally cool, but for the love of god, settle down with the OBESE descriptions. I was also impressed (as I know you wanted me to be!) that despite the fact that you're a med student and working 36 hour days, you still managed to work out! Often! Good for you, sister! And good for ME! That's inspiring!! Lastly, I'm sure that it's because you work out, but how many times can you work in the fact that your size small lab coat (also, scrubs) was/were just too darned big for you? By my count, four.

Ma'am, your tiny size and inspiring writing has shown me the error of my own slovenly ways! And someday, I certainly hope to end up in a book written by a snotty intern after I show up in the ER (and heaven forfend, if I'm having a baby-- women giving birth were downright FILTHY, according to you!) described as an 'obese white woman'! That would be heartwarming!

3 out of 5 stars Harvard FREAKIN Medical School!.......2006-06-10

This book is kind of nice, because it provides personal stories to go along with the journey of medical school. So often, medical school becomes just a big set of obstacles, in my mind, but this book helped to put a face on it and remind me that I'm going to have to stay human when I go through it.

It also kind of inspired me...she went to Harvard...I could go to Harvard too.

The complaint I have is that it kind of skipped around a lot, and some parts were boring. Overall, it was not bad.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not fantastic........2006-04-12

I started reading this book in the hopes that I would get a better insight into what it will be like to go through med school. When I begun reading, it seemed like it would be a great book, with personal stories and reflections on the journey to become a doctor... However I found that the book was a little dull and not as exciting as I wished it would have been. Overall it was a good read, but could have been much better.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Hunting Re-Defined.......2006-05-23

You will forever view your hunting by the moon phases in a different light after reading this book. You will also examine and very likely modify your hunting to improve and increase your harvest successes. Charlie Alsheimer backs up his philosophies and strategies with experience and research. It is not just based on random opinions and limited field experience. This is a "must read" for the serious deer hunter!

5 out of 5 stars It has changed when I hunt.......2003-12-05

For years I chased whitetails during rifle season only hoping that the rut would be on. It rarely was so I picked up bowhunting to extend my season and give me a better chance of catching the rut. I was still sitting in a tree wait for the rut to start. Mr. Alsheimer's insights have helped me greatly. I now can request vacation time to coincide with the rut, scout an area, set up a stand, and be sitting pretty. The past two years have been great thanks to Mr. Alsheimer's help

5 out of 5 stars A real gem among rhinestones.......2002-11-25

Let's just cut to the chase: there are a lot of books out there by self-proclaimed "experts" on how to hunt the wily whitetail. Most of them are just re-hashed information that any serious deerhunter already knows (or should). The number of really interesting and innovative books on this subject is low.
In this book, Charles Alsheimer gives us some truly helpful advice--whether or not you buy the moon theory. This is a good book and well-written, to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Is It All Moon Influence?.......2001-12-17

I believe Mr. Alsheimer is on to something important regarding the autumn cycle of whitetail life, but I am not sure that he has the whole story. The book is based on anecdotal evidence and observations of penned deer. Another author, John Ozoga, writes concerning the effects of age, nutrition, social status, habitat, and population dynamics among the factors influencing the onset and duration of the rut. I do not wish to disparage these observations and anecdotes, he gives sufficient from wide ranging areas to bolster his point; and; anecdotal evidence can, and sometimes does, have the force of experimentation. But then, how would one design more rigorous experiments?

I think that Mr. Alsheimer is a biological pioneer for this theory. He has shown himself to be a keen observer of whitetail life, and has made an important contribution to our understanding of the rut.

This book is, without question, well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Hunting Whitetails by the Moon.......2001-08-17

Charles Alsheimer coveys good usefull information on how the Moon effects Whitetail deer movement and breeding activity. The book moves along a well managed path documenting the ideas based on countless hours of research as well as observation from many an expert hunter. It covers the stages of the rut for North America and suggests times to focus hunting efforts and stratagies to use at these times. I think it's a great addition to any hunter or wildlife enthusiast's library and I can't wait to use some of the information I've learned. Two thumbs up!

    Book Description

The father of hunting deer by the moon, the man who started it all, Jeff Murray, shares his best kept secrets and insights on this fascinating aspect of white-tailed deer hunting. In his latest book on the subject, Murray teaches how to predict peak rutting activity and how to plan to be afield when big bucks are moving. Other topics include tactics to zone in on deer in transition areas and when, according to moon phase, deer will be at the field's edge and when they won't! This book also covers the different lunar cycles and how the moon triggers the rut activity.

4 out of 5 stars Moon Phase Whitetail Hunting.......2004-04-06

    Excellect book.

Explains very well the moon phases as it pertains to hunting.

The book also talks about hunting food sources, thermals, bedding area's, rub lines and travel routes. Good all around hunting book. Would recommend, very similar to Bowhunter soft cover books that come out every year.

1 out of 5 stars We've Already Seen This One.......2004-03-28

This book is identical to Murray's Moonstruck! book, just reissued under a different (and quite misplaced) title. Moonstruck! is a good book, but if you have that one don't waste your time with this exact same book. I think Murray owes all who bought both books an apology...and a refund.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories of whitetail deer hunting.......1999-01-10

This is definately one of the best books about hunting the whitetail deer I have read in a long time. Very refreshing. If you are looking for a how to kill a big buck book, this is not it. However, if you want to read a book that transports you to your favorite whitetail haunts this is for you. I found myself not only remembering vividly past hunts but also the feeling of those hunts and the characters involved. This books helps get us in touch with answers to the age old question - Why do we hunt? What makes hunting so special? Don't get the impression this is a heavy philsophical read, it isn't. Just a lot of fun. A truly great and entertaining book.

      4 out of 5 stars I found a new hobby.......1999-12-03

The author showed each step in simple pictures that assured me that I was performing each operation correctly. I completed the first three projects in the book my first weekend. I've moved on to bigger and better projects, but I know I couldn't have done it without the confidence I gained using this text.

      3 out of 5 stars Concise, to a fault.......1999-09-16

The book, as shown by the cover, has some ambitious projects. But there's just the simple basics in it of how to actually do them making a rank novice like me very nervous.

4 out of 5 stars Conversations with Bruce Robinson.......2005-04-20

Very enjoyable series of conversations with actor turned writer turned director, pretty boy Bruce Robinson. Having directed two of the best English comedies of the 80's (Withnail and I and How To Get Ahead in Advertising - both starring Richard E Grant - for another perspective and a fantastic perspective of an English (from Swaziland actually but...) actor in Hollywood read Richard E Grant's Withnails) I was very eager to read about the making of these films and what has happened to his career since - try sitting through Jennifer 8 without being disappointed. He is a voracious reader and collector and it is great to get a glimpse of his life and work. I only wish his body of creative work was larger - many of his more recent projects have fallen through. For fans of these two great films it is a delight.
