Book Description
Set in the hills of Northern Ireland in the 1960s and 70s, A SON CALLED GABRIEL is a deeply felt and often funny coming-of-age novel that is ultimately unforgettable.
Gabriel Harkin, the eldest of four children in a working-class family, struggles through a loving yet often brutal childhood. It's a turbulent time in Ulster, and in the staunchly Catholic community to which Gabriel belongs, the strict rules for belief and behavior are clear. As Gabriel begins to suspect that he's not like other boys, he tries desperately to lock away his feelings, and his fears. But secrets have a way of being discovered, and Gabriel learns that his might not be the only ones in the Harkin family....
Evoking a sense of time and place as compelling as ANGELA'S ASHES and AT SWIM, TWO BOYS, Damian McNicholl's A SON CALLED GABRIEL announces the arrival of a striking new literary voice.
Customer Reviews:
Not a good read, sorry Damian..........2007-08-28
When I finished this book, I felt like I had wasted two days of my life reading it. You know how there are 'feel-good' books and movies? Well, this is a 'feel-bad' book. The subject matter of the book is very dark, the characters and dialog are dark. The plot wanders without any real direction and the story ends rather abruptly without any resolutions. The characters (even the protagonist) remain flat and one-dimensional throughout; there is no growth nor lessons learned. Here is the whole book in a nutshell: "I grew up in a bad place, in a bad situation, and a lot of bad things happpened to me - but I am not going to share any of the lessons I've learned. The End."
When I finished this book, I just felt... bad.
Moving coming of age story.......2007-08-13
Set in Northern Ireland in the mid 1960s A Son Called Gabriel tells the story of a young Catholic boy's coming if age. Gabriel, a sensitive boy, is different from the rest of his working class family and his peers. He is bullied at school, and otherwise taken advantage of. The story tells of his confused feelings with girls and boys; his abortive attempts with girls; and his secret gropings with other boys which bringing him temporary pleasure but leave him guilt ridden. He has a champion, his uncle Father Brendan, a man who is surrounded by a certain mystery, the detail of which we eventually learn.
Gabriel narrates his own story, it is a tender and moving story, occasionally funny, well written and well worth reading.
Coming Out (Early) Story.......2007-05-12
The author provides good character development and is a good story teller. The point is made that the influences of family and religion cannot overcome our genetics; it can make us unhappy if we deny our true self, however.
Out of Its League.......2006-04-08
What dooms "A Son Called Gabriel" is a combination or too much ambiguity at the end and too little focus throughout. By the unsatisfying end, I never felt any connection to the book or to the relatively flat characters. It might just be that I've read far better books on the subject of a young man grappling with his sexual identity.
I agree with another reviewer who remarked this entire book could have been condensed into a Part I with a Part II and possibly Part III that get to the meatier times in Gabriel's life after he leaves for college. That Gabriel plays with girls and dolls and wants to be a hairdresser at 7-9 is interesting--albeit stereotypical--but doesn't warrant 100 pages of development. The early teen years also don't add a lot. Really nothing gets moving in this story until Gabriel's 16-18 or so and by then it was almost over.
There's a lot of lip service given to the Catholic-Protestant "Troubles" in the 60s, 70s, but it's never clear how any of this really affects Gabriel's development. Since he's boyfriend to a Protestant girl, I'd have to say the political tensions didn't matter a whole lot to him. In which case, it doesn't add much to the story.
At the end of course there's the big Scarlet Letter/Empire Strikes Back twist, which only distracts readers from the fact that the ending raises more questions than it answers. What will happen to Gabriel in London? Will he and Fiona stay together? Was Father Brendan a homosexual? We'll never know unless there's a sequel in the works.
As for the writing, it was average. I thought the author was guilty of run-on sentences at a few points, but that's just me. There wasn't enough scene-setting. Instead, we get a lot of rushing through test preparations/results and repetitive encounters with school bullies.
As a result of all the rushing around, there wasn't time to really develop the characters. The rest of Gabriel's family isn't much different than any sitcom family because there wasn't time to really settle in and flesh out their personalities into more than one dimension.
But as I said at the beginning, my lack of enthusiasm might be because I've read better books on the subject. "A Home at the End of the World" by Michael Cunningham, "Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon, and "Line of Beauty" by Alan Hollinghurst top that list, the latter two winning the Pulitzer and Booker Prize respectively.
By comparison, "A Son Called Gabriel" isn't in the same weight class.
Could not put it down.......2006-03-31
Beautiful story of growing up in Ireland. I found myself looking forward to finding out what was happening to Gabriel. Often I thought It was about my own Father. Great read

Complicated with little flow.......2007-06-28
When we went to see both Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry when they came to talk about their co-authored book Peter and the Starcatchers, we picked up a signed copy of this book. We knew little about Pearson except for what was said at the event, but we hoped for a lot since he was a local author. Well, I hate to say it but I was little impressed with this choppy and complicated book. There were times when the reader was expected to pick up on hints that led to resolutions in the book, yet I didn't pick up on them. The book was not a complete waste of time. I was able to follow the computer lingo which seemed a little out dated.
Interesting Soap Opera Potboiler.......2007-01-18
This is the first Ridley Pearson novel I have read and I can say that I wasn't disappointed. Mr. Pearson appears to be an author firmly grounded in reality and "The Body of David Hayes" reflects this, except for the occasional actions of main characters that would be more fitting in an episode of "General Hospital" than what would occur in a real life situation.
Seattle Lieutenant Lou Boldt investigates the attack of a good friend, State investigator Danny Foreman and discovers that a former bank employee convicted of embezzling $17 million dollars is being paroled. This employee, David Hayes was a co worker of Boldt's wife during a time when the Boldt marriage was on the rocks.
Liz Boldt, a successful IT manager for the Bank in question is coordinating said bank's merger with another institution and is contacted by this employee, with whom she had a six month affair with back in the day. David Hayes needs her to help him recover the embezzled money that he has hidden in the computer system. He is working on behalf of some real bad boys whose money it was, and who will kill him if they do not get their money back.
This is all great fun. The plot evolves into the dynamic of the Boldt marriage as Liz tells Lou about this affair, and his reactions to her revelations while trying to prevent Liz from being a victim of both the bad boys chasing Hayes and other elements of law enforcement who know the secret and try to take advantage for their own benefit. There are some interesting and twisted things that happen to the wife as a direct consequence of the affair and Pearson does a good job of keeping this consequences grounded in reality. For the most part these are real people making real choices in reaction to their circumstance. All this drama results in a cracking good read.
"The Body of David Hayes" misses five star status due to the fact that the book is too short for all the subject matter involved, some minor characters like Boldt's police comrades John DeMoia and Daphne Matthews are given little to do, and the single mindedness of the Boldt characters in certtain instances devolve into a caricature of Don Quixote, nobody is that determined...
On the plus side, the novel is firmly rooted in reality as there is no neat, clean ending tying up loose ends. Some of the scenes are laugh out loud funny as they are intended to be and Pearson creates some great characters, chief among them a shadowy Russian figure known as the "Sturgeon General." This is a crime novel where all characters have faults, no one is totally likable or dislikable, and innocent and guilty characters deal with the collateral damage of a seemingly unrelated series of past acts. I greatly enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading the next Boldt book.
This book has an almost unintelligible plot.......2006-12-26
Ridley Pearson shoots for the moon here. He tries for a nice literary prose style, a plot that unfolds like a map of Manhattan, and character studies worthy of the greatest actors.
However... for the scope of this novel, the huge story it tries to tell, it is in the end a couple hundred pages too short. By this I mean Pearson is too stacato and hurried. Components of the story rush by in a blur and after one development piles ontop of another you will find yourself wondering what the hell just happened. This isn't a state you will find yourself in at the end of the book, you will find yourself here several times. The story jumps around from one line of thought to another and in the end you will feel like your mind has been in a high speed bumper car chase.
Not the best Pearson book you will come across.
A solid addition to the Lou Boldt series.......2006-09-27
In this book the ninth in the Lou Boldt series by Ridley Pearson the action actually centers as much around Lou's wife Liz as it does Lou himself. The bulk of the story concerns the release of David Hayes, a former co-worker of Liz's whom she had an affair with, from prison. The kicker is that David went to prison because he embezzled $17 million from the bank that both he and Liz worked at. This brings both Lou and Liz's integrity into question as well as placing an incredible strain on their marriage. Oh yeah-incidentally not only is the Seattle P.D. interested in David Hayes so are the feds AND the local Russian Mafia (to whom the $17 million originally belonged but can't come forth to claim it for-shall we say-legal reasons.) This leads to a jurisdictional tug-of-war as everyone wants their piece of the pie (David Hayes) and all the Boldts really want to do is survive.
Told in Ridley's solid fashion this novel has it's ebbs and flows but at times the suspense is intense as only Ridley Pearson can do it. The only real drawback is there is not a lot to be seen of Jake LaMoia or Daphne Matthews as they are delegated to minor roles in this novel. Perhaps Ridley ought to consider letting them have a book of their own?
I probably would not recommend this book as an initial entry into the Lou Boldt series as their are better out there.(Pied Piper or Beyond Recognition are much more tense and suspenseful) However it is a solid entry in one of the best police procedural/suspense series and actually shows a little more humor than previous works (Is Dave Barry rubbing off on Ridley?). The development of the relationship and the elevation of Liz Boldt to a main character adds depth to the series and is handled well by Ridley Pearson.
Should be called The Marriage of Lou Boldt.......2006-05-04
What I'd really like to know is who did Ridley Pearson pay to write this book for him? Whoever she is, she should go back to her day job. I'm a big fan of Pearson's and the Lou Boldt books but this one fell way short. Not only did it feel/sound like it was written by some woman pretending to be Ridley Pearson, but the story was just plain BLAH. I got the feeling the author really wanted to explore or yet again test Boldt's marriage but then had to come up with a cheesy, not well thought out crime to be the backdrop for this. Disappointing.

Larson is put back on her trail when the Romeros intercept the master WITSEC list from the Justice Department and Hope is believed to be targeted for execution.

Quest for Earthlight Trilogy, Book 3: With the enemies of the Earthlight continuing to grow in both numbers and power, Peter's final quest becomes more difficult and confusing.
Download Description
The inscription was so large that Peter was able to make it out from a fair distance. ... The words seemed to give off their own light. In a whisper, which echoed in strange sibilants around him, he read: Commanders of Light and Darkness waged war within the womb. Corruption and vicious treachery then led one on to doom. But in the Great Halls of Draining Light, in a fortifying bower, The Sleepers weave dreams while invoking the revival of their power. The friend of the One through willow shower With silver concord protects his power. But the Commander of Darkness with vicious might By false claims of kinship asserts unjust right. When the Essence of Obsidian tries to explain this prophecy to Peter by describing the word "womb" as a poetic euphemism for the beginning, Peter's final quest for Earthlight only becomes more difficult and confusing. And in the meantime, his and the Earthlight's enemies continue to grow in both numbers and power--until Peter discovers the dreadful truth and in his mind-numbing horror seems to be about to lose the final battle.

Customer Reviews:
I learned Pilates using this book.......2007-06-02
I started using this book 2 years ago to learn the basics of Pilates. I have tried other Pilates books/DVDs since, but I keep going back to this book. The first part of the book explains what Pilates is, such as controlling movement, maintaining stability, and why breathing at particular times in the exercises is important, and it gives examples of these that are easy to understand. Then it goes into what the words neutral spine, abdominal scoop, pilates first position, etc., actually mean, and how to do them.
The mat exercises contain 4 levels: Pre-Pilates, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Not knowing anything about Pilates when I started, I began with the Pre-Pilates workout. Because there are multiple steps to most exercises, it did take some time to remember when to breathe, when to roll up or down, but once I got that down, it made the subsequent levels of exercises easier to learn. Also, a few of the exercises were impossible for me because I didn't have the strength to do them, but I just did what I could, for example the hip-up, I would lie on the mat with my feet in the air and worked those abdominal muscles although my feet were going nowhere, and within 2 weeks I was doing all 9 hip-ups. You just have to do a little more each time. The beginning mat series contains some exercises from Pre-Pilates and it's not very long, so it wasn't too difficult to learn.
The intermediate mat series is where I really felt I was getting a workout, and I still use this one, although I have added some to it since. It really felt as if I was getting an intense abdominal workout and after adding the variations for the side kicks, my legs definitely got stronger. The advanced series I have done a few times, but it is rather long, about an hour compared with 20 minutes of the intermediate, and I have trouble finding time for it.
The next section deals with Pilates accessories such as foam roller, magic circle, and big ball, and give some exercises to do using those. Overview of Pilates equipment just tells what some of the things are you might find in a Pilates studio and shows pictures of people using them, but gives no exercises.
Overall this is a great book that I would recommend to anybody interested in learning Pilates. Thanks to the wonderfully detailed instructions, I believe I am getting a safe, effective Pilates workout.
Pilates - a superb reference.......2006-07-29
I borrowed a copy of the book from my local library and liked it so much I bought it for myself and for my daughter-in-law.
I attended a Pilates class and told my instructor that I had the book - she remarked that it is one of the best and recommended it to the whole class here at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
The book gives excellent explanations. While the class gave me a sense of how a flowing routine will work, I can do it at home with the aid of the book.
I recommend it highly. Thanks, A Pilates Dummy Fan
Great if you already have some body knowledge.......2005-10-17
This book was one of my mom's rejects for the reason that she couldn't make head nor tail of the instructions. I like it quite a bit, but I have a background in modern dance and was already familiar with isolating different muscle groups. I think if you don't have a good sense of your body already, this book might be too confusing to start with.
So far there's a lot of good material for me to work with, although much of the book is dedicated to repetitive touting of the benefits of pilates (yes, we already know it tones) as well as super-advanced exercises using complicated equipment, which aren't really "for dummies." Still, the workouts are fun, challenging, and feel good on my body. I would recommend glancing at the instructions before buying and seeing if they make sense to you. If they do, you'll probably like this book -- otherwise, maybe try a video or simpler book.
A good guide if you buy the Pilates hype.......2003-08-23
This is probably the best guide you can buy for Pilates. It is easy to understand and does not try to mystify or complicate the subject. It has good pictures and descriptions of exercises, most of which are good, but more than a few I think are really a strain on the back. I am not really enthusiastic about Pilates. I think basic callestenic exercises are just as effective if done mindfully and correctly. Nevertheless, if you are convinced that Pilates is magic and you want to purchase a guide this would be your best bet.
I agree completely with the review "Not really for Dummies".......2002-10-02
I couldn't understand the instructions either, for the same
reason: You have to read the book while you're trying to
do the exercise. However, this ended up giving me a great workout: I was lying on my back for many minutes holding a "crunch", since I had to keep my neck raised up trying to read the book while I was supine on the mat. This may be a new Pilates exercise.

Recipes, fondue history, cooking tips and more.......2002-12-28
This book is a classic and a must for every fondue enthusiast. Fred's style is as warm and inviting as the recipes he presents. I particularly enjoyed his anecdotes regarding the history of fondue. I was intrigued that his first edition of the book, written over 35 years ago, was published under the pen name of M.N. Thaler, a take off on the name of the popular fondue cheese emmenthaler. I also enjoyed the fact that the book covered many different styles of fondue cooking including cheese, meat in oil, broth, vegetable, and dessert.

Customer Reviews:
The photographs and illustrations are fantastic........2006-07-13
I found this book extremely helpful, accessible, and entertaining. The little chapter on demystifing French names of antiques in priceless. The chapter on woods helped me identify the various types of wood more easily when I'm antiquing, and helped me connect specific woods with eras and styles. Lots of practical information in a succinct format that's easy to grasp. What really sets this book apart is the large number of color photographs and illustrations. I've never seen so much high- quality color art in a book like this. It's incredible helpful to see a sharp color photo of what the author is describing. I recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting with more confidence.
Great History Book -- Average for learning styles.......2006-07-13
I bought this book hoping to learn how to tell the difference between different styles of furniture. I have to report mixed results toward that goal.
This book does an EXCELLENT job of describing the history of the different periods of antiques. I have no doubt now as to where the terms "Regency, French Empire, Queen Anne or Rococo" come from or what the driving forces were that brought about the changes in each style.
But the descriptions of each use many of the same terms. For example, Cabriolet legs are mentioned in several different areas. But not what would define what sets each type apart. Don't get me wrong, there are pictures of each style of furniture, but I would have liked to see some side-by-side comparisons how how to tell the difference between a Queen Anne versus a Centennial table.
As another example, when describing the Art Deco period, there are pages describing the World's Fairs of 1933 & 1939 as well as about the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. Very interesting reading, but I would have appreciated more on how to define Art Deco items versus Retro.
In porcelain, the author describes German, French and British porcelain. Where it was made, famous potters, etc. But not how to tell the difference between them.
All in all, a very enjoyable book to read. And I did learn quite a bit from it. But not the basic things I would have expected from a book titled "Antiques 101."
Worth its price!.......2006-03-19
If your a novice or a seasoned antiquer you'll find great information in this book. It can be used as a learning tool for beginners as well as a refresher for those with the passion for anything antique. Lots of good common sense information contained in this book. A must read regardless, and a valuable addition to anyone's reference library. You will find the information in this book will more than pay for itself in the long run.
Antiques 101: A Crash Course in Everything Antique.......2006-03-09
Great for the beginner; wonderful for those who thought they knew it all; and just a nice way to become somewhat adept with basics.
Perfect for the beginner!.......2006-02-25
If you have some idea what a antique looks like, or even could tell that a object maybe old. Then this is the place to start, I personally would love to take the class.

This book has some terrific patterns. I have made several. The instructions are clear and accurate. Great thing about this is the patterns can be adapted to different yarns and hook sizes. I'm and Intermediate crocheter and have experienced great success with these patterns as gifts. I go through the book and can find something for each person on my gift list!
A GREAT buy!
Vanna's Afghans All Through The House.......2000-11-26
This is a great book all around. There are often two pictures of each afghan; a full size view and a close up view which is helpful in viewing stitches. There are so many worthwhile projects in this book from baby afghans and a full size cat motif to kitchen placemats. All skill levels are present. Some of the easy ones (very easy) are also very beautiful. Color stitch guide at end of book. The best part: the exact Lion Brand yarn (with color name and number) used to make each afghan is listed at the bottom of the page. At the end of the book all the different types of yarns are explained along with an 800 number for ordering. You can also find all that you need under the Lion Brand Website. I am so eager to make many of these afghans. I am nearly done my first one and have bookmarked about a half dozen more.
great pattern book.......2000-11-13
I've been crocheting most of my life, and this book had the most veriety I've ever seen (and afghans I'd actually make). The work is beautiful and will keep you busy for a very long time. Don't be afraid to change yarns from the recommended, or change colors to suit your taste: I use worsted weight instead of chunky (don't like using chunky yarn). This book includes easy patterns and more complex patterns - I would recommond it for any crocheter.
Beautiful afghans that are fun to crochet........1999-11-09
I love this book, and her other book "A to Z." They both are filled with beautiful afghans that I know I will be crocheting for years to come. These are not your "grandmother's" afghans, but gorgeous designer styles. The instructions are written very clearly, and there are projects for both beginners and advanced crocheters.

Problem Solver.......2003-11-26
When I first moved to the southwest I was amazed at the lack of solar energy utilization. This book is for individuals who have the initiative to harvest a non-depletable energy source availiable to us today that comes directly or indirectly from the sun. With the current mass produced homes on the market, will you avoid the extensive repairs & maintenance required before a 30 year mortgage is paid off in your current home due to poor quality? Your literature research for due dilligence on answering other options should include this book.
Sincerely,
Bret

Book Description
Description: Bereft of absolute meaning and filled with disparate lines given free run of the page, Paco Knoller's drawings are consistent with their themes: night, sleep, and the stillness of dreams. Presented here are works in the style he is best known for, multifaceted drawn works, which since the 80s have included large-format, colorful lithographic and woodblock impressions.

Book Description
For over a decade, Berlin artist Paco Kn ller has favored wood panels and cardboard as supports for his drawings. Here we see how the course that the lines and forms take when cut into wood continues to have the effect of his earlier pictorial concepts but allows new graphic pictures to emerge with great innovative power. Schnitte (Cuttings) reproduces for the first time Kn ller's new works in bright yellow, red, blue, and green.

Walter Bernstein was a war correspondent for the U.S. army magazine Yank. During World War II, he joined the Communist Party in 1946 after he was inspired by the Communist partisans in France and Yugoslavia. (He had interviewed Marshall Tito for the magazine.) Shortly afterwards Joe McCarthy's House Committee on Un-American Activities initiated its notorious witch-hunt for Reds in the government and, to garner publicity, in Hollywood, where Bernstein had become a writer for film and television. Though he successfully avoided appearing before the Committee, Bernstein was blacklisted, and forced to scrape a living together by selling his scripts through front men. In this memoir, he recalls the days of the blacklist, celebrates the movie business, and defends his political allegiances.
Book Description
First time in paperback: By an acclaimed writer blacklisted in the anti-Communist hysteria of the McCarthy era,"the best book on the Blacklist I have read"-Arthur Miller
During World War II, Walter Bernstein was a correspondent for the U.S. Army magazine Yank; after the war, he joined the Communist Party. When Senator Joseph McCarthy began his notorious witch hunt for Communists in the late 1940s, Bernstein-a writer for film and television-found himself blacklisted. For a decade he would scrape a living together by selling scripts through front men. Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post has called Inside Out "a lovely piece of work...a memoir of the blacklist that, without minimizing any of its offenses or forgiving any of its architects, finds humanity and humor in the period." The author vividly recalls an entertainment community torn between those who were willing, and those who refused, to denounce their friends, and he provides unforgettable glimpses of leading Hollywood figures such as Burt Lancaster, Elia Kazan, Bette Davis, and Zero Mostel. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer has hailed this as, simply, "the best personal account of the era."

Review contributing to ignorance........2007-08-24
The above House reviewer writes, "Shortly afterwards Joe McCarthy's House Committee on Un-American Activities initiated its notorious witch-hunt for Reds in the government and, to garner publicity, in Hollywood, where Bernstein had become a writer for film and television."
This is not only a ridiculous statement. It is categorically untrue. Senator McCarthy was not in the House, and House members are not Senators. McCarthy also never called one Hollywood Commie or follow traveller before his Senate Committee.
Thought provoking and timely..........2005-07-26
Having met Walter Bernstein prior to finishing the book probably helped me in understanding his point of view about the Blacklist. I believe that the pain and betrayal of colleagues such as Elia Kazan are downplayed in the book when Mr. Bernstein could have really exacerbated them. It is not an expose - but his personal memoirs about a time in his life when he struggled to earn a living due to government paranoia. I don't think that Mr. Bernstein's reason for becoming a member of the communist party has any relevance, which is his point. It is not unlike the experiences that certain Americans are experiencing today based on their beliefs and backgrounds. I think this is an interesting and thought provoking story which should be shared and revived to remind us of the dangers of censorship and government control.
Needs editing........2004-11-12
Inside Out claims to be a memoir of the blacklist and while the blacklist, HUAC and McCarthy trials are mentioned, it's mostly just a meandering autobiography. Bernstein needs an editor to shorten and break up these chapters to keep things more on topic. The first chapter is by far the best at covering the blacklist era and shows how it turned the film and television industry "inside out." The second and third chapters go back in time, covering in all of his childhood in one and all of World War Two in another. They also strive to build an explanation of why Bernstein chose to join the American Communist party but instead of presenting a well-thought and erudite discussion of third party politics, socialism and communism, he weakens his overall memoir with long winded, rambling tangents.
Correction.......2003-06-26
Just a fact check here. The House Unamerican Activities Committee was NEVER run by Senator McCarthy. In fact, he was never on the Committee. He was a first year senator on the Senate Housing Committee at the time that HUAC became active in 1947. McCarthy didn't begin his anti-communist efforts until 1950. I would think the editor would do some research before referring to "McCarthy's House Committe on Un-American Activities." Plus, HOUSE means House of Representatives. McCarthy was a Senator. He was, however, a member of the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. Little different.
A fine personal story.......2002-12-25
A very well-written memoir of the blacklist years. Bernstein is not vitriolic, vengeful. He is also not apologetic about the idealism that led him to the Communist Party. His times of despair also include not only acts of random kindness but a bonding with fellow blacklisted writers that resulted in their mutual support of each other in doing what they did best, writing, with a front, someone who agrees to have their name on the blacklisted writer's script. Bernstein does not shout but with his quiet dignity allows the readers to shake their heads as to how we allowed this hysteria to go on for so long. And how much we lost during this period when so many talented people were unable to do what they did best.
