Jennifer Haigh's first novel, Mrs. Kimble, was an auspicious debut about three women who marry the same man--consecutively--and their ability to kid themselves about who he is, and, more to the point, who they are. It won the PEN/Hemingway Award, given annually for best first fiction. Haigh has beaten the sophomore slump with another page-turner: Baker Towers. The action, such as it is, takes place in post-World War II Bakerton, a Pennsylvania mining town. "...[T]he town's most famous landmark, known locally as the Towers, two looming piles of mine waste. They are forty feet high and growing... The mines were not named for Bakerton; Bakerton was named for the mines. This is an important distinction. It explains the order of things. Haigh lets us know this on page two, setting the backdrop for the family drama of the Novaks.

The story begins with the death of Stanley Novak, wife of Rose and father of Georgie, Dorothy, Joyce, Lucy, and Sandy. This is an Italian-Polish marriage, tolerated, but a break with the town's tradition. The personality, temperament and needs of all five Novaks are made clear to us by their choices--although they are not always clear to the Novaks. Their interaction, with each other and their community, is the stuff of the novel. Life revolves around the mines, the Church, gossip, and sports. Many times throughout the book it seems that Haigh is using a camera rather than a pen, so perfectly does she create a scene for the reader.

Georgie struggles to get away from Bakerton after his military service by going to Philadelphia and marrying the boss's daughter, a decision he lives to regret. Dorothy gets a job in D.C., but never really fits into the scene. A breakdown brings her home for good. Joyce joins the military, is appalled by the way she is treated, and hastens home to care for her ailing mother. Lucy, overweight and unwelcome with the "in" crowd, longs to be Fire Queen, the pinnacle of acceptance in Bakerton. Sandy, handsome and unreliable, leaves for big city life, finds it, and comes home periodically to hide out.

Haigh has captured these people's lives as they play out, more acted upon than acting. None of the Novaks is self-reflective; the girls accept the status quo, the boys escape and find that they have taken themselves with them. A foreshadowing of the changes that will take place is symbolized by a horrific mine explosion at the end of the book. This life that Haigh has so carefully described will soon disappear forever, for good or ill, but she has illuminated its current reality with a sure hand. --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

Bakerton is a community of company houses and church festivals, of union squabbles and firemen's parades. Its neighborhoods include Little Italy, Swedetown, and Polish Hill. For its tight-knit citizens -- and the five children of the Novak family -- the 1940s will be a decade of excitement, tragedy, and stunning change. Baker Towers is a family saga and a love story, a hymn to a time and place long gone, to America's industrial past, and to the men and women we now call the Greatest Generation. It is a feat of imagination from an extraordinary voice in American fiction, a writer of enormous power and skill.

"E-Book Extras: ONE: An Interview with Jennifer Haigh; TWO: Reading Group Guide

A stunning follow-up to her bestselling debut,
Mrs. Kimble, Jennifer Haigh returns with
Baker Towers, a compelling story of love and loss
in a western Pennsylvania mining town in
the years after World War II

Bakerton is a company town built on coal, a town of church festivals and ethnic neighborhoods, hunters' breakfasts and firemen's parades. Its children are raised in company houses -- three rooms upstairs, three rooms downstairs. Its ball club leads the coal company league. The twelve Baker mines offer good union jobs, and the looming black piles of mine dirt don't bother anyone. Called Baker Towers, they are local landmarks, clear evidence that the mines are booming. Baker Towers mean good wages and meat on the table, two weeks' paid vacation and presents under the Christmas tree.

The mines were not named for Bakerton; Bakerton was named for the mines. This is an important distinction. It explains the order of things.

Born and raised on Bakerton's Polish Hill, the five Novak children come of age during wartime, a thrilling era when the world seems on the verge of changing forever. The oldest, Georgie, serves on a minesweeper in the South Pacific and glimpses life beyond Bakerton, a promising future he is determined to secure at all costs. His sister Dorothy, a fragile beauty, takes a job in Washington, D.C., and finds she is unprepared for city life. Brilliant Joyce longs to devote herself to something of consequence but instead becomes the family's keystone, bitterly aware of the opportunities she might have had elsewhere. Sandy sails through life on looks and charm, and Lucy, the volatile baby, devours the family's attention and develops a bottomless appetite for love.

Baker Towers is a family saga and a love story, a hymn to a time and place long gone, to America's industrial past and the men and women we now call the Greatest Generation. This is a feat of imagination from an extraordinary new voice in American fiction, a writer of enormous power and skill.

4 out of 5 stars Sad and lovely tale.......2007-04-11

This novel revolves around Bakerton, a coal-mining town in Pennsylvania, mainly centering on the Novak family, who live on Polish Hill. Rose Novak, the matriarch, is Italian, and of course grew up in Little Italy, across town. We see how life in this hilly and remote town variously but invariably affects all of its residents. Some ache to get out, others can't wait to leave, still others try to leave but somehow can't. The story is set from just after World War II to some time in the 60s. During that time, a lot happened in small industrial towns like Bakerton: women got jobs then lost them; men got educated and moved away; women tried to move away, but often had to come back to care for relatives; mines and mills closed down because of increasing competition. This book captures all of that beautifully, without too much sentiment, but with an affection mixed with melancholy. I recognized a bit of my own hometown in Bakerton, and the story rings true to me. I found this a well-crafted tale of regular folks doing the best they could in their little corner of the world.

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read.......2007-03-01

I couldn't wait to read this book by Jennifer Haigh after reading her first novel, "Mrs. Kimble". I was not disappointed. Her first book was excellent--this one, very good.

4 out of 5 stars a true depiction.......2006-12-08

I enjoyed reading this, my grandparents are Slavish and were raised in a coal mining town and the depiction of even the minor details is on cue. It reminds me of my Grandfather's stories. I couldn't put it down.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read........2006-11-22

I also read 'Mrs Kimble',which I think has the edge over this book, by same author. The reader is educated about the happenings of a mining town, where at least once a year a miner is killed in an explosion or injured in a rockfall. (12). I loved the descriptions and nuances used by this author. The empty lives of women is depicted repeatedly in this book. It was hard for males too but at least they could get away. Women had no such outlet other than to get attached to men who were often "drunken louts who communicated mainly by cursing..." (117) Bigotry between different ethnic groups is palpable. Diabetes and its associated hazzards are dealt with through the character of Rose. Well done!

4 out of 5 stars Life of the mines.......2006-11-07

This is an interesting look at how working in the mines affects a family and a town. I liked the family and got lost in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Still excellent after many listens........2007-08-16

This is among my top 5 audio books, out of the perhaps 50 that I've listened to over the years. The author's wry sense of humor combines with a gift for suspense to make for an excellent spy novel. But there is also a sensitivity to human emotion that is touching at points. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Kudos ~.......2005-01-14

I have been a book reader my entire life. This Author (who passed away a few years ago) shall be deeply missed. Written with intelligence and in a manner that the characters (and their souls) become alive on the paper in my hands.

It is very likely you have never heard of this author, nor his Quiller series.

Warning :) Know up front that if you order one of them, you shall (over time) order all of them.

Run do not walk and gather up many enjoyable evenings with all of the Quiller novels.

A deep thank you Elleston Trevor, aka Adam Hall for providing me with your words.

...this author did to the spy thriller--don't be put off by the number of pages, each is fast-paced and the writing style is both accessible as well as being completely original--with all the hoopla over Brosnan quitting the Bond series, Broccoli and co. could do no wrong using this character and series as a template--HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars Haere ra, Quiller.......2002-03-08

In New Zealand, where I live, haere ra is a Maori term meaning more than goodbye. It expresses sorrow at the departure, regret at the necessity for parting, hope for a reuniting in the future.
Adam Hall, creator of Quiller, is no more. Quiller has performed his last service with his usual stoicism, his acknowledged courage, his down-at-heel humanity.
I've enjoyed meeting with Quiller on a regular basis; I regret that he shall tell me no new tales.
However, I have his old tales to refresh my mind as to what an extraordinary character he was.

                4 out of 5 stars Monster of a Dungeon.......2007-06-13

This is part 2 of a 3 part dungeon for 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons.
I have not played it yet but it is promising to be a deadly challenge for my players and a permanent location whithin my home brewed realm.
It takes characters to the very hidden temple of demon-king Orcus himself. I have yet to find anyone that has managed to survive to finish this dungeon so if your looking for a deadly permanent location that players can return to again and again here is one dungeon to fit the bill.
An excellent product for any hard core DM.
I only wish Necromancer Games would reprint this fine dungeon in it's totality.

4 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promises........2002-09-02

Since you can read the introduction in the "Look Inside" section, I won't say much about it except that Necromancer Games is going for an old style dungeon romp with monsters, puzzles and traps (including instant kill ones - ie, if you don't escape the trap, you're dead.. no save attempts). The graphics on the cover are quite nice and the black and white drawings inside are very well done. There's good use of white space in the text, making it easy enough to read. The maps however are below average. They're small, with no grids or size scale and hard to read. These problems are fixed if you log onto their site and download new maps, however this shouldn't have been a problem in a module that's otherwise of high quality. In addition, you can download more information about the wilderness and a special extra encounter that harkens back to a 'classic' (supposedly) module encounter from 1st Edition rules. This special encounter is now downloadable without having to dig up the codeword, since it's right on the site, and looks to be a fun addition.

Before I go on, realize that I've only read, not DMed or played this adventure. This is part 1 of a 3 part dungeon and includes the upper levels. The nice thing about the dungeon is that it does not get incrementally harder as you move down it. The players had better realize that sometimes it's better to run, since not all the encounters are tailored with an eye towards the probable strength of the party. You can also travel between many levels, even skipping many in between, using certain routes. No "one way to the previous level and one way to the next level" deals here. This feels a lot more realistic (in spite of the claims by the authors that they want to go back to the good old days of illogical dungeons - I'm firmly convinced this was meant tongue in cheek as there is at least a nod towards logic in it). Of course, this only works if you have all three modules. There are some fiendish traps and strong monsters, but puzzles are lacking.

One complaint I have is that the shaded text that's meant to be read to the players sometimes assumes you've gone through the dungeon a certain way and seen something referred to in the text (usually minor, like saying something along the lines of "The rubble in this room isn't quite as broken as that in both of the others." when the players may have only moved through one room on the way in). Also the shaded text sometimes assigns feelings to the PCs, a no no in my book. These complaints along with the maps prevent me from giving it a 5 star rating, but if you want a decently priced, hack and slash dungeon crawl in the old style, this looks to be one of the better choices.

5 out of 5 stars Good d20 Dungeon Crawl with other Possibilities.......2001-05-14

Having picked up a couple of the other products by Necromancer Games/Sword and Sorcery Studios, I decided after glancing through Rappan Athuk that this had possibilities as well. First off, let me say that the only disappointing thing about this product is the long wait between part 2, where more info on the lost Temple of Orcus will be presented. This is a good, basic dungeon crawl with several tough encounters. There are enough hooks available so that it can be dropped into any campaign that you are running. Plus, there is plenty of room for a creative DM to add to the dungeon or make it a part of his or her campaign. The toughest creatures that the party will encounter is this module are the Skeletal Warrior (who is a Blackguard), Purple Worms and the Spectral Lich, who resides on a level that the PC's will have to work hard to get to. The treasures are commensurate with the encounters, so the PC's will be happy. Overall, the product is great, it is presented well and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Put this in your bag of tricks........2001-04-23

This module is advertised as the intro to a series of modules that are pure dungeon crawl (Long on Hack 'n Slash and Traps, short on roleplaying), but each of the levels in this dungeon can easily be adapted by a DM to be a standalone adventure. As such, this module will work for DMs who want a long running dungeon crawl, or DMs who just want a bunch (up to 5) of drop in 1 night adventures. Anyone looking to make money at publishing modules should look at this as a good example. This presumes next to nothing about the campaign, and so you can fit it where you need it in your campaign rather than making your campaign fit the module.

5 out of 5 stars Best module for the third edition so far........2001-03-07

Normal Necromancer Games products value roll-playing as much as role-playing. The dungeon is a tomb that becomes later a temple and later leading to gates of hell or the fabled mithril city. This is part 1 and it's only from ground level to level 4. These first parts of the dungeon take level 4 characters to level 8. If I was to rate how difficult the dungeon is, I would say 9 out of 10. What's nice about the Rappan Athuk series is that they can be added to any campaign. The tombs can simply be anywhere in your world. I attached them to the module Crucible of Freya since it took characters from level 1 to 3 and is supposed to be in the same world as the Rappan Athuks. Perhaps the best feature of the dungeon is it's freedom of a controlling theme. The characters have a goal and a lot of clues but there are no timed events waiting to happen after a certain amount of time or themes have passed. The middle levels are accessible at all times as long as you solve the puzzles or get through the nasty battles. I have tried the other D&D modules and they are pretty good but I believe this one is the best one out there so far when it comes to challenge and roll-playing.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market regarding Macular Degeneration........2001-08-31

Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes !

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet!.......2000-07-15

This book on macular degeneration is by far the best one published to date. There are numerous other publications available by other doctors that don't come close to the quality and depth of information contained in this book. I even gave a copy to my eye doctor who was not aware of it's availability.I must add that this doctor really speaks from personal experience with Macular Degeneration and it shows in the quality and quantity of great information.I thank God for this mans bookand highly recommend it to anyone who has MD or a friend or relative with the problem.Sincere thanks,Lee CarlsonSpring Hill, Fl

5 out of 5 stars Best resource on Macular Degeneration.......2000-02-12

I have a parent with macular degeneration and this book gave my father and our family new hope and inspiration. Particularly compelling was the fact that the author himself suffers from this affliction. The information provided was extremely useful and written in an informal, personal and non-technical manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has or knows someone with macular degeneration.

                5 out of 5 stars Ophthalmologist - Vitreoretinal Specialist.......2000-02-11

Dr. Solomon has written a wonderfully insightful account to aid patients and families cope with macular degeneration. He writes from the unique perspective of being an ophthalmologist who suddenly realized that he was now a patient with macular degeneration. The text is much more than an account of his experience. It is an in-depth review to help patients and families understand macular degeneration, the natural course of the disease, current theories for treatment and prevention, including careful consideration of the role of vitamins and nutrition. Overcoming Macular Degeneration addresses spoken and unspoken patient fears and concerns. There is thorough review of options and attitudes for dealing with visual impairments to enable patients to increase their visual ability and achieve a renewed lifestyle. Overcoming Macular Degeneration is a welcome addition to the support system for those dealing with macular degeneration. I will frequently recommend this book to my patients and their families. G. Robert Hampton, MD - Retina Specialist on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Public Information Committee, Syracuse, NY

The author clearly put great personal effort and care into crafting this book, which is a refreshing concept after seeing so many price guides that were obviously slapped together for a quick buck. I've read Miller's writing in several magazines. He's excellent. I also think he's right on the money with the prices, which reflects the fact that he is, himself, a record collector. This book is worth every penny.

I also built the rocking horse on the cover (a couple of times) and some of the other projects, including a very cool wobbly fish. The review by "jeff_mcfarland" is right on the money. I can't imagine building it with a jigsaw, but I suppose it's possible.

In any case, the design of some of these projects is absolutely superb. It's the most handsome rocking horse I've ever seen, and both my son and my neice love it to death -- well worth the cost of the entire book. (The plans for this horse are nearly $20 if purchased separately!) The plans are quite easy to follow, but as Jeff mentioned, there are some holes in the descriptions.

My binding broke, too, also after moderate user in the shop. This is the ONLY reason I'd give it 4 instead of 5 stars. I'll probably end up taking it down to the office supply store and having it rebound (spiral bound). The pages are pretty high quality and durable, so this should work out just fine.

Again, hats off to the designer -- it's well thought out. For example, the back of the head and neck of the horse on the cover is curved in such a way that you can put the head pattern twice on the same board, back to back (one upside down) so that these curves nearly meet. (The two head cut-outs share the curve.) This saves a good deal of wood. Similarly, the leg and tail patterns can be overlapped to save wood. I ended up having a lot of extra wood when I was finished the first time!

                    This book is a bargain!

4 out of 5 stars I built the rocking horse on the front cover.......2003-05-16

I built the rocking horse on the front cover of this book. It turned out pretty well. The drawings in the book are fairly easy to follow. However, the written instructions have some holes in the explanation. In addition, the instructions imply that stationary power tools are recommended for this project, but hand-held tools would work as well. I seriously doubt that this horse could be built properly using only a hand-held jigsaw and electric drill. The precision required to do this project *right* really call for bigger tools. One other gripe - after moderate use in the workshop, the binding on this book started to come loose, and a couple of pages came out.

But overall, I was pleased with the project and hope to build some more toys using the plans in this book. It was worth the price just for the horse plans

I made 2 of the Bunk Beds with the desk option. They turned out great. There were a few errors in the shopping list, so double check the list against the plans or you may have to make a second trip. I also made several modification to better fit our needs. The illustrations were exellent and don't be afraid to make changes. If you only use one project in this book, it is still worth buying.

                          Product Description

Recognized as a master of Italian and world cinema, Vittorio De Sica is considered one of the major proponents of neorealism, an Italian movement that forever altered the content and style of the cinema worldwide. This work covers De Sica's entire career as a stage and screen actor, director, and screenwriter. It begins with a chronology of his life and work. A lengthy essay discusses biographical and career information in detail. Special attention is given to the years following the war when De Sica directed Shoeshine, Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, and Umberto D—films that made him famous. Succeeding sections offer stage acting credits, screen acting credits, a filmography of De Sica's directorial work, selected credits related to De Sica's neorealism films, and a filmography of De Sica's work as a screenwriter. Two interviews with the master provide additional insights. A bibliography of works by and about De Sica in the English language complete the work.
