5 out of 5 stars Batman Volumes 2 &3 Neal Adams.......2007-09-27

I have all three volumes of these sensational collectibles and I have to say this was "The Batman" not only as I remember him but the definitive Batman as he should be both artistically ( he looks like an athlete not a steroid pumped jock! No offense Jim Lee fans...but Neal Adams is the master! )and the character and stories themselves are barnone so timeless that it seems every writer for the character since Mr. Oneil refers to those incredible stories in some form or another. I am a firm believer in progressive or evolving a character but this time period of the Batman is untouchable!

4 out of 5 stars Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams: Volume 3 (Batman).......2007-02-17

A great third book with a lot of covers thrown in. Neal Adams is the expert Batman Artist and it's great to get these stories collected in one bound edition. Also includes sketches at the back of the book and a brief synopsis on Neal and the people who worked with him. My only negative about this book is that (as in the previous two books), they recolored the stories instead of leaving them in their original form. I think it takes away from the authenticity of the work, but it's still a great purchase if you're a Batman fan, or a Neal Adams fan.

1 out of 5 stars Poor (altered from orig) coloring is the *only* reason I'm grading this low!.......2007-02-04

I'm a huge fan of the 70's batman, Neal Adams' art, any kid of Ras story, so of course I was excited to pick this up. I usually like to thumb through a copy before ordering, but I imagine because of the cover price these were all sealed. I'd heard complaints about "retouched" inking on these Neal Adams volumes before, and chocked it up to people being too nit-picky. Well, I ordered the book, got in the mail, and ripped it out... then my heart sank. While I can't say that the re-touching of the art is bad per se, it totally took me out of the 70's comic feel, and actually ruined the book for me. I couldn't finish the first story, and thumbed through the rest of the book to see if it was all like this. Except for the black and white sketches, it was. I normally rate very high, but I wish I would have heeded the warnings about the re-touched art. Let me be clear that the stories, binding, paper-quality, and extras (intros by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams, plus some of Adams' commercial Batman work) were all top notch--but the colors were so at odds with Adams pencils that I feel like I've completely wasted my money. If you're thinking about getting this, head over to brick-and-mortar bookstore first to thumb through it. If the art isn't totally off-putting to you, then there are some great stories in here that you'll really enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Timeless Standard for Batman.......2006-11-11

This third volume collects the last portion of the Neal Adams Batman. While the second volume is in and of itself excellent, this volume is indeed superior. Phenomenal writing, superb coloring, quality paper, and timeless art.

Present-day comic "artists" still have miles to go before they reach this type of comic storytelling.

You get:

"Daughter of the Demon": (R'as al Ghul)
"Half an Evil" (Two Face)
"Night of the Reaper" (Harlon Ellison assist)
"The Lazarus Pit" (R'as al Ghul)
"The Demon Lives Again" (R'as al Ghul)
"The Bruce Wayne Murder Case"
"The Joker's Five Way Revenge" (Joker)
"Moon of the Wolf"

My only complaint is the re-inking of two Power Record Books that were excellent the way they originally were.

Still, a volume to be read, re-read, and treasured.

Book Description

On Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid's thirty-second birthday, she gets an unusual gift: a homicide call out. The crime scene: the elite Hillside neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. The victim: hotshot investigative reporter Percy Crenshaw, who has been bludgeoned to death in his carport. Tensions in the city have been running high. The previous week, a police officer shot and killed an unarmed mother of two in what he claims was self-defense; in the aftermath, protestors have waged increasingly agitated anti-police protests. Crenshaw's death, it seems, is not unrelated: within a matter of hours, police arrest two young men who appear to have embarked on a crime spree in the aftermath of the protests. The case looks straightforward, especially when one of the suspects confesses. But then the man recants, claiming coercive police tactics, and Samantha finds herself digging for more evidence. Following Crenshaw's steps, her search leads her through an elaborate maze of connections between the city's drug trade and officers in the bureau's north precinct.

4 out of 5 stars Close Case.......2007-09-04

For those fans of legal thrillers, Close Case by talented Alafair Burke will fill the bill. It takes the reader step-by=step through the development of a case against a defendant and what could happen to make the case disappear at some point in the investigation. Samantha Kincaid is handed tow hot-potato cases that involve race relations as well as suspicious deaths. She is caugt among the many sides of the law in trying to pursue her case with fairness. The defense lawyers, the arresting officers and her bosses in the district attorney's office all seem to want to tell her how to handle the case or at least have a hand in her decision-making process. This puts a pressure on her private life that causes trouble between her and the police officer she is living with as he is involved in one of the cases. A delicate balancing act is called for, and that is not Samantha's specialty. She has been to lose it when pushed too far. Close Case is written from two points of view, Samantha's first person and third person for the others, an unusual combination in writing style, but it works in this tale. The author has carefully kept them separate and distinct in weaving the plot and subplots. This is not a shoot 'em up, has no car chases, but does offer a steadily increasing sense of tension as the story progresses, a sense of action to come causing the reader to wonder what will happen next. Written with a light touch that keeps the pacin even and moving forward, Close Case will hold your attention from beginning to end. Recommended as a well told tale that will have you looking for other books by this very able author. Enjoy. I did.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and convincing book about a Portland Deputy DA.......2007-07-12

This is a book by the daughter of the well-known writer, James Lee Burke. A thumbnail biography at the end of the book states that Alafair Burke graduated from Stanford Law School, is a "former district attorney in Portland, Oregon," and that she "now teaches criminal law at Hofstra Law School."

James Lee Burke's books are widely popular and of the sort that I would read after extracting every last crumb from a crumbling set of Readers' Digest and maybe a 1948-51 run of National Geographic--but only if I were REALLY hurting for a literary fix. Alafair Burke is, thank heaven, a quite different writer. She skillfully avoids her father's orotundity on the one hand and his swamp snobbery on the other. She tells a straightforward tale in an admirably lean and efficient manner, comes to an end, and then stops.

I have, of course, no way in which to confirm the impression, but I find her descriptions of the activities and people of the Multnomah County DA's office and the Portland Police Department to be convincing to a degree not often found in mystery novels.

Burke's heroine, Deputy DA Samantha Kincaid, is refreshingly more astringent than she is likeable. She's given to occasional bouts of self-doubt and second guessing--none of which she would ever admit to anyone else. The exigencies of commercial plotting insure that Ms. Kincaid life and career may be a bit more ... intense than that of DAs in general, but I look forward both to catching up with her earlier adventures and following her new ones.

Four solid stars.

5 out of 5 stars She's hitting her stride.......2007-04-19

I have read Judgment Calls and Missing Justice recently, and I've enjoyed the series so far. Since Alafair Burke is the daughter of one of my favorite authors, I expected her to be a strong writer. The interesting thing is that she is so unique, very different from her father, and at the same time such a good writer.

For one thing, her main character is a prosecutor in Portland Oregon. Her dad writes about Louisiana and New Orleans, so the contrast is pretty strong. One similarity, though, is that she, like her father, does a wonderful job of evoking the place. I haven't been to Portland since I was a kid, and I remember nothing of it, but I feel like I've visited.

A second thing is the writing style itself. James Lee Burke is one of the best descriptive prose writers alive, as far as I'm concerned. His daughter doesn't have his high-flying skills (not yet anyway) but her plots, if anything, are stronger than her dad's, and her writing is serviceable enough to get her by, and then some.

Lastly, there's her characters. The main character/narrator, Samantha Kincaid, is an interesting person, at times cranky, opinionated, and short-tempered, but always intelligent and quick.

In the current installment, Kincaid starts out handling the killing of a local black newspaper reporter who was known for his investigative pieces. Someone has beaten him to death, and initially it looks like a botched carjacking. The city is already simmering because just a couple of weeks previously a black woman, unarmed, was shot repeatedly by a patrol officer. When the older, more experienced prosecutor handling that case goes down with a case of Lyme disease, Kincaid's handed the officer-involved shooting also, having to decide whether to prosecute the cop, and then try to make her decision work.

As things unravel, it becomes apparent that no one involved in either of the cases is telling the truth. Things are complicated further by the fact that Kincaid is sleeping with a detective who winds up being the primary arresting officer on the reporter's killing, and when things begin to go south there she has to take sides, and he opposes her actions. The whole thing gets very messy before the book is over.

I like Samantha Kincaid. I like the stories Alafair Burke has written. I liked this book. She's not going to fall into obscurity (the connection to her father means that she gets a lot of publicity--look at the blurbs she's gotten) but so far she hasn't had a real hit. Don't worry, it's coming.

3 out of 5 stars Close Case came fairly close to rating a 4 star..........2006-10-23

I picked this book up in a hospital gift shop when I was desperate to have something to read, and the selections there were very limited. It's not the type of book I normally read. Luckily, I found the book to be enjoyable. I liked the protagonist, who was drawn with characteristics mimicking a real person. She was interesting, cranky, loving, suspicious, etc. The mystery was well drawn. What keeps this book from receiving a four star rating is that many of these characters were introduced in other books, and I felt I was missing important back stories that were repeatedly alluded to by the author. You might want to start with Judgment Calls and Missing Justice, the previous books by Alafair Burke.

    SORCERY, SCIENCE, AND SHADOWS

Pel Brown knew nothing about parallel universes, let alone travel between them. Then he stepped through a portal that appeared in his basement--and his life turned upside down.

That first inexplicable doorway took him into a magic world called Faerie, ruled by the evil and mysterious Shadow. Another portal provided escape to a world of science and spaceships--and ruthless space pirates plundering the Galactic Empire.

Imperial forces rescued Pel. They would even send him home--but only after he returned to Faerie and destroyed Shadow. And so, with wizards, spacemen, and swordsmen as his unlikely allies, Pel set out to beard the enemy in its stronghold.

But real life is what happens while you're making other plans--as Pel learned when he uncovered his malign foe's true nature...

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2005-09-18

In this sequel to Out of This World, Pellinore Brown returns from the universe of the Galactic Empire to the world of Faerie, which is his only possible way back to Earth. But, when his group comes under attack by the forces of Shadow, Pel quickly realizes that the only way he will get home is over the Shadow's dead body. And so, with his mixed bag of wizards and swordsmen, spacemen and mutants, and homesick earthlings, he is off to Shadow's stronghold. But, what he finds there will surprise him...and some surprises are nasty indeed!

I must start out by saying that I am a big fan of Lawrence Watt-Evans, and am enthralled by his Three Worlds series. I have enjoyed the way that the author constructed his three universes, and then wove them together. Like the first book, this one lulls you into thinking it's a fun little children's story, but before you know it the author turns up the heat and the story becomes quite serious indeed. If you are put off by stories that include death and dismemberment, then you will dislike this book.

But, as for me, I loved this book! I absolutely love the setting, I found the story to be engaging, and the characters enjoyable. I can't wait to get the next book in the series, and see how it all turns out. This is a great book, by a great author, and I recommend them both to you!

    Book Description

How did the debate on health reform turn into the most concerted attack on government in recent American history? In this incisive account, a prize-winning social scientist offers deep insights into the changing terrain of U.S. politics and public policy. Because of far-reaching changes in the Reagan era, Theda Skocpol shows, the Clinton Health Security bill became a perfect foil for antigovernment mobilization. Thus its defeat provides a unique window into the new political landscape.

Theda Skocpol's "Boomerang" is nearly as interesting and sharp as her opinions. It's another winner.

1 out of 5 stars Boomerang falls short........2000-05-02

Boomerang by Theda Skocpol, a professor of government and sociology at Harvard University is subtitled, "Clinton's Health Security Effort and the Turn Against Government in U.S. Politics." And indeed, this book is about politics, not about the reality of what went on in those crucial years. One comes out with the impression that the book was written to bring the author to the attention of the Clinton administration.

For example, she writes that Hillary and President Clinton had found an ideal "middle way" for health care reform, but that unfortunately, their plan was sabotaged by the conservatives in 1994 following the lead of Bill Kristol, former chief aide to Vice President Dan Quayle. She laments that the Democrats were not able to marshall their forces at a critical time to pass what she obviously considers the "good" legislation of the Health Security Act.

While she gives Bill Kristol considerable, unflattering credit, she fails to even mention the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), whose landmark lawsuit, AAPS v. Clinton, against the secret Health Care Task Force, derailed to a significant extent the Health Security Act of 1993. Neither AAPS nor the lawsuit appears in the text or index. The book is therefore quite incomplete. In just one chapter of his book, The Seduction of Hillary Rodham, author David Brock gives by far a more accurate portrayal.

The book is an apologia for the ill-fated Health Security Act which carried with it a significant transfer of control of health care delivery from the private sector to the government bureaucrats and an assortment of central planners in the various levels of the bureaucracy, such as the Purchasing Cooperatives, the National Health Board, HHS, and numerous other alphabet soup government or quasi-government agencies that were to be established. The American people were correct in rejecting socialized medicine and the Clinton plan.

4 out of 5 stars A fine, scholarly work on an important event.......2000-02-07

This book promises to explain to the reader why the Clinton health care plan failed. The author does this rather well, pointing out how flaws in Clinton's "selling" of the program along with the disunity of sympathetic interest groups could not match the unity and purpose of Republican opponents. It is important to remember that Ms. Skocpol is a scholar, which can be good and bad. Her work is scholarly so it is well-proven (like a scholar) but also very narrow in scope (also, sadly, like a scholar). If you want an analysis of what went on behind closed doors in the 1993-94 fight or want a real discussion on the merits of health care reform, go elsewhere. But if you want an analysis solely on "why Clinton failed," this book does a very good job.

The defeat by the Republicans of President Clinton's sweeping health care initiative was a critical turning point in modern American politics. A disaster for the Democrats, it led to the Republican conquest of Congress in 1994. Theda Skocpol rejects the prevailing view, which lays most of the blame at the feet of Hillary Rodham Clinton, offering the real culprit as something called "Reagan's revenge." She believes that the tax cuts of the Reagan years gutted a host of once-effective federal programs, generating widespread public mistrust of government. An incisive look at Clinton's defeat on health care, Boomerang also provides a fresh, and at times frightening, perspective on the legacy of the Reagan years.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining AND informative.......1997-02-08

National Health Care?--The compassion of the IRS!--The efficiency of the post office!--All at Pentagon prices! Theda Skocpol's Boomerang--Clinton's Health Security Effort and the Turn against Government in U.S. Politics opens with this collection of irreverent aphorisms sighted on the bumper sticker of an old American pick-up truck in the summer of 1994. Later that year, however, a political pundit hailed the Democratic party for "believ[ing] in great government enterprises to solve great problems." A real health reform effort was ignited. American optimism was high. Mere months later, the wind behind the sail of Clinton's proposed reform vanished and the effort lay in defeat--a casualty that seemingly leant credence to the Chevrolet's shameless propaganda. Skocpol's incisive work wends the reader through the course that was "the rise and resounding demise of the Health Security effort." Boomerang is not an explanation of health care reform. Rather, it is an exercise in politics--an eye-opening account of a massive political undertaking from a vantage close enough to be well inside the Beltway, but far away enough to spare the reader sleepy academic dogma. Skocpol begins our journey with a proclamation: "The presentation and decisive defeat of the Clinton plan in 1993-94 was a pivotal moment in the history of the U.S. governmental and political system." Ostensibly, the American political landscape is now irrevocably changed. That said, we enter the first of six chapters. The author initiates us with the embers of health reform talk from the early twentieth century. She then springs to the beginning of the current decade to explain how a Pennsylvania state senate hopeful put reform back into the American consciousness with a simple television campaign advertisement. Following the candidate's victory, several schemes for national reform were promulgated. Eagerly, 1992 Democratic presidential hopefuls picked up on the reform rhetoric. In time, the Democratic candidate emerged toting "an alternative middle-of-the-road approach to comprehensive reform"--and William J. Clinton was elected. Skocpol relates the fascinating story of the President's quick assembling of a health reform Task Force of experts charged with constructing the would-be plan for reform. The document, some 1,300 pages, arrived several months later into Clinton's tenure than planned and was very eagerly received by Washington insiders who quickly obtained leaked copies. After White House tweaking of the plan, which included such features as mandatory regional purchasing alliances (one of several features that was largely unrecognized and/or poorly understood by the citizenry), public approval was considerable. Skocpol's third chapter, "Democrats in Disarray," recounts what "went wrong...for the Clinton Health Security proposal." The author blames in part the virtual "dissapear[ance]" of Health Security from the President's agenda. Ostensibly, Clinton's agenda was supplanted by NAFTA, foreign affairs, and congressional problems at home. Skocpol then observes the remarkable power of political action committees and the effects such key organizations had on the once-burgeoning reform effort. Even PAC's whose support was expected seemed to offer lukewarm embraces. What is more, Congress could not agree about "exactly what kind of health reform they wanted." Chapter Four, "Marketing an Ambivalent Message," reflects Skocpol's attitude that the conveyance of the details of the reform effort to the general public "proved thin and unconvincing." The goals and themes of reform were presented, but the details were not. Such was the prescription of the consultants charged with the marketing of the proposal. In the author's assessment, such "vague and evasive explanations" of the workings of health reform left Americans vulnerable to the rhetoric of the manifold naysayers. Attenuated public support for reform resulted from this scenario. Boomerang's lengthiest chapter, "Mobilization Against Government" is the author's thrust toward her thesis. In this chapter, Skocpol paints the boomerang course of the reform effort--the hawkish biting back of those who would oppose the Clinton effort. She recounts the mobilization of stakeholders ("groups with an occupational or financial stake in the $800 billion-per-year business of health care...") against the proposal. Of particular import were the efforts of the Health Insurance Association of America. This anti-Clintonian association undertook to lobby at the grassroots level and utilized television advertising with the infamous "Harry and Louise" doubt-casting commercials. Moreover, key congressional members began to attack the Clinton plan in the media. Such aspersions seemed to propagate exponentially and were eventually aimed at the First Lady. This uncontrollable disparagement coupled with the public's general fear of "managed care" rendered the citizenry even more averse to the reform effort. "Ambitiously launched but poorly explained by its own sponsors, Health Security gave antigovernment conservatives exactly the target they were looking for--a proposed federal initiative that could be portrayed as threatening to the American middle class." Skocpol's conclusion, "Legacies and Lessons," portrays the impetus for the downfall of the Clinton reform effort as "Reagan's Revenge"--a rampant distrust of government borne of President Reagan's evisceration of federal programs. "[T]he Clinton Health Security proposal--in its ultimate irony--gave new life to the outcries about [the problems with big government]." Moreover, Skocpol alleges that even more moderate approaches toward health reform would likely have suffered the same defeat because Clinton "was trying to deal with the aftereffects of previous conservative attacks on government." Did Skocpol support her thesis? Is the political landscape irrevocably changed? Time will tell. However, the author's resolute charge that the demise of the Clinton proposal was a "pivotal moment in the history of the U.S. governmental and political system" can be construed as overstatement. Perhaps, more plausibly, only future thoughts of monumental social reform and over-arching federal programs will resound from the aftershock of the toppled Clinton proposal. Skocpol's Boomerang is a well written, compelling account of the events that surrounded Clinton's health reform effort. Replete with pertinent, illustrative political cartoons, the work is a comfortable read with great appeal for those who crave the war stories of the American political machine.

5 out of 5 stars Hanka's Table is not only a Cookbook but much more!.......2006-06-25

Hanka's Table is an interesting mix of recipes - majority of them for Polish food but not only, it contains also politics/history and art.
Hanka Sawka wrote the restrospection of life in Poland during communism. These memories are additionally supported by nice photographs. I can assure you - the memories give the idea of how life is under communism (I was there, I know!)
The recipes are additionally enriched by beautiful art decorations done by Jan Sawka.

Very interesting compendium. This is not a book you just borrow from the library, this is something you would like to have!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Cookbook/A Story for Our World to Know!.......2005-12-01

I have always loved to cook and read. Through the years, I have accumulated a large number of books - many of which are cookbooks. I cannot tell you how very thrilled I was to discover your book, At Hanka's Table. My own heritage is half Polish on my father's side. Though I have fond memories of Grandma and Grandpa, I have longed to learn more about my Polish roots. I cannot thank you enough for writing your wonderful book!

Your and Jan's story is amazing. It truly shows how strong people can be with love and determination. You are an inspiration, a brightly shining light upon this planet we call Earth. Food, people, and their culture are so intertwined and I love how your story is woven with your recipes. And, I so very much appreciate your inclusion of Polish history in your writings! I love that you have made it possible for me to learn of Poland...to learn not only about the darker times, but to know how beautiful and rich Poland's history is.

I was so very drawn to your husband, Jan's artwork which so enhanced your book. My first impression upon finding your book was how lovely the jacket is with it's colorful presentation! I was happy to enjoy Jan's work throughout At Hanka's Table.

I look forward to trying many of your recipes and adding them to my table regularly. The only problem is deciding which to try first! Thank you so much again for sharing your recipes and your story. At Hanka's Table is a wonderful treasure! Robin L (Romash)

      5 out of 5 stars A feast of creativity.......2005-01-21

This book is an uplifting tapestry woven from food, hope, creativity, and art, against a backdrop of the fight for Polish freedom.
Diverse themes are sucessfully combined in this book, just as the fresh ingredients are in the authors recipes.

I smiled when I read that a young Polish man must stop his courtship if served the black soup. I whipped up a tasty pot of her winter Bigos (hunters stew) while reading about Jan, Hankas reknowned artist husband, and the Grateful Dead!

The location of Poland on the old historic trade routes have helped give Poland a broadly based cusine that includes French, Italian, and Turkish methods and spicing making the book's easily prepared dishes seem a little more exotic.

North America has welcomed the Polish here since the 1600's, and remember, without the help of Polish Generals Kosciuszko and Pulaski the American Revolution might have turned out a bit differently.

At Hanka's Table is a beautifully illustrated book and inspiring family story that crosses many borders to honor us with a recipe for living and a bit of love.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring book .......2004-11-18

This book is the first I've read that gives an American reader the woman's
slant on what it was like growing up behind the iron curtain. I really had
no idea of sufferings of Polish people during and after WWII, and the
importance of Polish tradition to the people maintaining a sense of who they
are--and of the importance to women in all of that. All of this was new to
me. I also enjoyed the first-hand story of the experience of a family of
modern refugees, and how they found their way in America. It was a very
      inspiring book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy For Your Stomach.......2004-10-19

This book is both: a fascinating family life story starting in Poland, behind the Iron Curtain, miraculously emerging into the Open World to continue in pursuit of artistic dreams, and a treasure house of traditional Polish meals enriched during the voyage. The wisdom of the book lies in the combination of both elements based on very deep passion, humanity, peace and love; some of the feelings kept secretly in the bottom of hearts for a long time. Meals, arts, adversities of life, family, dreams, friendships and struggles - these ingredients surprisingly support each other during the years leading finally to the speak-out, which the book really is. You can find them all inside flavored with flavorsome photographs and delightful graphics.

      Book Description

Before the telegraph and telephone, postcards were the primary form of social communication. Today these postcards are treasured artifacts as well as important historical documents from around the world. Author Pamela Apkarian-Russell memorializes the artists while tracking the progression of time, and the evolution of taste, through this simple and elegant form of communication. Her research on the artists and wide array of subject matter they depicted yields a compelling and unique history, told here for the first time. The entire family will enjoy the nostalgic, holiday-by-holiay visual journey; artists will find the graphic presentation informative and inspirational; and the legions of postcard collectors won't be without it.

      4 out of 5 stars Fine art in 3 1/2 x 5 1/2".......2003-07-04

The art on the postcard is the focus and this book does a great job of picturing different views of the holidays. Starting with a brief history of the post card and publishers, she then presents some common symbolism. She moves through the year, covering each of the holidays. At New Year's are images of pigs pulling a coach. On Valentines days is the "Penny Dreadful", with ill wishes from someone you may have wronged. At Christmas are Louis Wain's cats, which can be rare (and the relative prices of the cards are indicated). She includes holidays not commonly celebrated in the states today, such as Guy Fawkes Day, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Krampus. Because of her own collection, the images of Halloween are spectacular and a highlight of the book. My only minor complaint would be that on some of the light backgrounds her annotations are hard to read.

      4 out of 5 stars Great pictures!.......2003-01-19

This is a very good book in terms of introducing the different holidays/postcard themes that can be found. It has really great pictures and I guess what I take away most is the general ideas on what is considered valuable/rare. I just collect ones I like and think are attractive, I don't really collect because of the collectability, so this book was helpful for me in getting ideas on what else I might like and should look for.

      5 out of 5 stars Postmarked Yesteryear.......2002-11-05

If you have any interest in vintage holiday postcards, or just an interest in "holiday history/graphic symbolism", this wonderful book is a "must-own". The examples shown, and the writing in general, could not have been better. It is NOT a book you put on the shelf and forget about. Joe Hohmann, Media, PA

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful window to the past.......2002-02-17

These postcards are truly works of art. Compare these oldies to today's postcards and you will be greatly disappointed with the apparent lack of artistry and imagination that goes in to current postcard design. Each postcard is a wonderful reminder of a more intimate time, when getting a postcard was an event. Praise must go to the authors for compiling a wonderful collection and presenting it to the reader.

              Book Description

When Milton Berle died in the Spring of 2002, THE NEW YORK TIMES declared that the legendary comic "may have had a more profound influence on our way of life than some presidents or Nobel Prize winners." This landmark memoir, as startling today as it was when it was first published, reveals the life and times of the man known affectionately to millions as Uncle Miltie. Told with unflinching candor, here is one of the most fabled and influential show business careers of all time: from performing as a child in Vaudeville and making silent movies with Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, to nightclub performances for Al Capone, working on radio during World War II, performing in Broadway musicals, and, finally, superstardom on television. Perhaps even more fascinating is Berle's scandal-ridden private life: his star-crossed love affair with a 1930's movie queen and the child they had out of wedlock, his numerous affairs with women ranging from evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson to Marilyn Monroe, and his stormy relationship with beautiful showgirl Joyce Mathews, whom Berle married twice. It is Berle's unsparing account of his life and his determination to show the world his real face that led Frank Sinatra, at the time, to call this "the gutsiest book I've read in years." Told with equal amounts of comedy and pathos, and featuring colorful appearancesby all the major stars of his day, MILTON BERLE is simply one of the best show business memoirs ever written.

              5 out of 5 stars White hot!.......2006-04-14

I bet you think you know Uncle Milty. I bet you think Uncle Milty was funny. I bet you think Uncle Milty only wore woman's clothes when he was on stage. I bet you think he was endowed with what looked like a catfish with an apple in its mouth. I don't begrudge Milton. He had a great career and was funny for his era -- but I do not think it would work today. Not that cross-dressing doesn't still work (Tyler Perry is a genius) but his jokes were unnuanced and flat when compared with today's hyper-genius standups like: Carlos Mencia, Dennis Leary, Colin Quinn, Jackie Martling, Jim Belushi, Gallagher, Jeff Foxworthy, Dustin Diamond, Norm Crosby and Sally Field in "Punchline."

5 out of 5 stars Warm and fuzzy.......2003-12-07

Although the publishers try to pump up this book as being extremely racy, I found Berle's descriptions of his sexual exploits hilarious. I'm not justifying having children out of wedlock, but the man was very funny.
But the story of Milton Berle's life is also touching and full of real affection for his family and friends. He either lived with or was in close contact with his mother (the original stage mother!) on a daily basis, and even made it into a record book for doing just that. His description of his mystical visits with her after her death was charming.

Eventually, Berle settled down with a down-to-earth woman, to whom he stayed married until his death. He was very proud of her. While he and many other entertainers were either 4F or doing entertainment duties during the war, she was a veteran.

This book is also insightful into the history of stand-up comedy. Theft of material was rampant, and Berle was famous for being one of the most thieving. He was proud of it, but justifies it by proving that lots of others did it, too, and that his material was also stolen.

This was a fun autobiography, and I recommend it. I also recommend A Dreadful Man, which is a biography of George Sanders based on letters from his last wife.

              5 out of 5 stars What a story!.......2000-01-20

Lemme tell ya, this book deserves 5 stars just for Uncle Miltie's graphic depiction of his steamy affair with evangelist Aimee Semple MacPherson ... not to mention a ton of other raunchy Hollywood gossip. Way to go, Milt! Let me know when you're available ...

4 out of 5 stars An Insiders Glimpse into Mr. Televison's Life.......2004-05-25

'My Father, Uncle Miltie' presents the story of growing up as legendary comedian Milton Berle's son. MFUM tells the behind the scene details of Milton's somewhat private life, a life full of gambling, women and mild hatred toward his son. MFUM provides anecdotes never before made public, and makes one think of how much Berle's private and public life were vastly different. I recommend this book to any fan of Berle who wants to catch a deep glimpse of his character behind the curtain, and off the television screen. One might me a bit amazed...as I was.

4 out of 5 stars Not "Milton Dearest"!.......2002-04-05

This book was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I was afraid it would be a real "Mommie Dearest" hatchet job on poor old Milton, but although there were certainly some problems in their relationship, Bill has the honesty to point out that it was his fault as much as his father's. It would be interesting to know how (or if) their relationship was affected by this book - did they speak at all after it was published? (By the way - my sympathies, Bill. It's tough to lose a parent but especially so when you were on the outs with him.)

5 out of 5 stars The Humanizing of Milton Berle.......2000-01-10

I have always heard that comedians by nature are truly serious people, and basically an unhappy group. Therefore, it doesn't surprise me that Milton Berle treated people, especially his son Bill, so obusively. MFUM humanizes the great TV star and, in fact, I pitied my idol after reading this book. I'm sure that Bill Berle would have much preferred a "real father" from a modest background rather than a superstar ogre such as Uncle Miltie. MFUM was an informative, interesting, well written book, and while it shattered my image of Milton Berle, I found it quite enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, Entertaining and Surprising.......1999-12-27

I've thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with this easy to read work. The book is rich in the interesting history of one of the world's most beloved entertainers, penned by someone that could only be a loving son. Both funny and tragic, it held my attention through the honesty without scandal. An unexpected ending certainly reminds us we're all equals! Thanks, Bill!

5 out of 5 stars Good Bio. Could Have Gone Deeper.......1999-11-07

I like reading entertainment bios. This is one of the good ones out there. I think William Berle is too concerned about himself. He comes off passionless and pretty selfish. There are plenty of people who would have loved to have Milton as a father. What did he do that was so bad? There is way too much about Wiliam. Who cares? I would have liked to read more about Milton and all the great people he knew. Even with all of the Beverly Hills whining, the book is still fun to read.
