a wonderful trilogy. I highly recommend getting all 3 of these books to all Nora Roberts fans.
Nora's trilogy of 3 sisters.......2007-08-13
Was terrific. I got hooked the first time, so much so I had to buy the set. Great writing. I could see everyone and everything from her descriptions.
The art of glass blowing is interesting.......2006-06-15
It was kinda neat to read a story about a glass blowing artist. I love traveling to other countries with Nora Roberts. A reason I loved the Irish Trilogy. Born In Fire is a good book, but not my favorite by Nora. I did like the difficult characters in this book. I will definately read the rest of the Concannon sisters trilogy.
great characters and chemistry...flimsy plot.......2005-06-07
this is the first in the "born in" series by nora roberts. it tells of the romance of maggie and rogan.
maggie is a red-headed irish girl who's tempermental, candid, brash at times, sexual, and afraid of marriage. she's a gifted glass blower who is on the cusp of stardom, although she's not aware of it yet, living in a small town in ireland.
rogan is a black-haired hunk with blue eyes and a focus on his business. he's the opposite of maggie in that he's more emotionally controlled, holds his tongue more times than not for appearance sake, is uncomfortable with the idea of losing control sexually (at least initially), and values marriage over just a sexual relationship. he is immediately enamored with maggie's artwork and wants to display it in his galleries. the conflict begins when he wants to take control and she doesn't want it because she's always controlled everything in her world up until then.
i loved maggie because she was comfortable with her sexuality and was committed to her art. she was outspoken and didn't hold her tongue if she felt something needed to be said. there wasn't any coy games going on with her when it came to rogan. she let him know early on she was interested in him sexually.
it was really cool watching rogan lose control of the situation, when he was so used to having control over every aspect of his life. i loved how the two characters came together sexually, too. it was definitely HOT, although i wish roberts had spent a little more time describing more of the interludes.
and the banter between the two was hilarious. maggie had an uncanny way of getting under rogan's skin, and the arguments between these two were almost as entertaining as the sexual encounters.
there were a few weak points of this book, though. for one, there was an unnecessary amount of time spent on them at work. while i understand the need to educate the reader on the process of glass blowing, sometimes i found myself wanting to skim over it so i could get to the interaction between maggie and rogan. i wish there had been more of it in the book. it wouldn't have been a bad thing if the storyline was interesting when they were apart, but it really wasn't. the only time it got interesting outside of the romance was when maggie and her mom were going at it.
if you want a strong female character who's funny and knows what she wants and like the idea of watching a man's control unravel, and you like reading about spontaneous and heated sexual encounters after reading uninteresting stuff for about thirty pages prior, this is the book for you. i thought it was aiight, but i'm not pressed to read it ever again.
Furnaces and passions.......2005-06-03
Maggie Concannon is a glass artist and a free spirit who lives alone in a small cottage in Ireland, just concentrating on her superb glass blowing skills while trying to block out the eternal carping and whining of her mother who lives nearby with Maggie's sister Brie. When Maggie is offered an exhibition in a Dublin gallery by breathtakingly handsome Rogan Sweeney, she fights against an instant attraction but soon succumbs, accepting him as a lover but refusing to tie herself down in marriage. The book describes magnificent scenery in France and in Paris itself, but is mainly concerned with steamy sex scenes on floors, couches, beds and almost antwhere else convenient. It's the first in a trilogy and seems to have captured the imaginations of vast numbers of readers, so who am I to quibble?

Book Description
What does a lawyer do when she discovers her client may be a liar, or worse?
Charles Kendrick, the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, has been named a "person of interest" in connection with the disappearance of his twenty-five-year-old spokesperson, Michelle Forrester. Attorney Marty Nickerson is representing Kendrick, a high-profile resident of Cape Cod, but soon finds that parts of his story don't check out. Meanwhile, Marty and her law partner -- and lover -- Harry Madigan, are defending ex-con Derrick Holliston, who stands accused of murdering a popular local priest on Christmas Eve. He admits the killing, but claims, improbably, that he acted in self-defense.
Michelle Forrester's body is found the day Derrick Holliston's trial begins, which leaves Marty and Harry facing two mounting legal battles and two clients whose stories don't make sense. Together they must confront the law in all its maddening complexity, battling for -- or maybe against? -- their own cagey clients in order to see that justice is ultimately served.

"Charles Kendrick, the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts and a high-profile resident of Barnstable County, has been named a ""person of interest"" in connection with the disappearance of his twenty-five-year-old spokesperson, Michelle Forrester. A multistate manhunt is already under way, and District Attorney Geraldine Schilling is pressuring Kendrick for an interview, which his lawyer doesn't want to grant. His lawyer is Marty Nickerson, and the Senator laughs at her advice to keep quiet. He isn't laughing three days later, when Geraldine informs him that parts of his story don't check out. It seems the Senator lied. Could he be hiding an extramarital affair with a young and beautiful staffer? Or something worse? The Senator's troubles coincide with another trial that Marty and her law partner -- and lover -- Harry Madigan, have been preparing for. They are scheduled to defend ex-con Derrick Holliston against a felony murder charge. Holliston, a juvenile delinquent turned adult offender, stands accused of murdering a popular Chatham priest on Christmas Eve during a burglary. He admits the killing, but claims, in an improbable version of the night's events, that he acted in self-defense. Michelle Forrester's body is found the day Derrick Holliston's trial begins, which means Marty and Harry face two mounting legal battles and two clients whose stories don't make sense. What does a lawyer do when she discovers her client may be a liar, or worse? What are her legal and ethical obligations? And what happens when the client insists on representing himself in court? Marty Nickerson struggles with these morally ambiguous legal issues as she defends two men who are almost surely guilty...or are they? Marty and Harry must confront the law in all its maddening complexity, battling for and against their own cagey clients in order to see justice served. This fourth installment of the critically acclaimed series reinforces Rose Connors's reputation for stylish, page-turning legal drama at its very best. "

A new genre is born.......2007-03-06
I suppose "mystery fluff" will be an accurate representation of this new and unique style:
There is a mystery out there, somebody is very plausibly accused of crime, however it is also possible that he (or she) may not committed it.
However, the book mostly tells us about how the prosecutor pivoted, how the judge smiled, and what kind of pizza was ordered for dinner. Nothing of significance is happening for the most of the book, but by the end of it we will know the answer and it is not necessary the expected one.
And despite of all of this, this fluff does not annoy you a bit, once you read one book you want to start another one.
Passable tale with lectures in between from a defense attorney.......2006-01-04
The writing? Alright. The story? Not many twists and turns. How I found it? In a free Reader's Digest digest. How I felt about the characters? I'll be the writer's a social conservative.
And no, it's no Pelican Brief, not that that's gonna be a classic anytime soon. And way too many self-justifying lectures about defense work.
as good as John Grisham and Scott Turow.......2005-07-15
On Cape Cod, two lawyers coming from different directions in their careers met and became partners in their own firm. Marty Nickerson spent years as a prosecuting attorney in the District Attorney's office and Harry Madigan was a public defender before they became defense attorneys. They are lovers and work together on each other's case of which they have two.
U.S. Senator Charles Kendrick's staffer Michelle Forrester disappears without a trace between the time she left her boss's home and the time she was due to visit her parents. Both his wife and daughter know he had an affair with her. He has Marty to represent him but when Michelle's dead body is found the Senator admits his guilt; Marty doesn't believe him.
Harry is concentrating on the case of Derrick Holliston, who spent most of his young life in juvenile and just got out of prison. He is charged with the murder of Father Patrick McMahon. Derrick insists the priest was forcefully trying to sexually abuse him but the state claims it was a robbery gone terribly wrong. Both lawyers believe their client is guilty but they just might get him off on a technicality.
Two different cases, two very different people from opposite sides of the economic and social strata. Neither one is telling the truth but one is innocent and his lawyer believes part of the job is to find out who it is. The legal maneuvers of both lawyers are virtuosos employing brilliant strategy while in the end justice is served on all fronts. Rose Connors holds her own with the likes of John Grisham and Scott Turow.

Book Description
The year is 1134. In an isolated German monastery, an aging monk begins the history of a war thirty-one years before. But a strange encounter with the Otherworld enchants his quill, and he can no longer write the cautionary Christian tale his superiors expect. He must write what he truly remembers.
"A novel grand in narrative, grand in ideas and, especially, grand in ambition." (Edmonton Journal)
"A powerful tale of ambition, delusion, obsession, and betrayal, focused upon four memorable characters...The work of a major talent: intelligently conceived, beautifully written, powerfully absorbing, deeply moving." (Victoria Strauss, SF Site)

sex magic, religion, and the holy roman empire.......2007-04-20
I have to admire Marie Jakober's talent- when I first started reading The Black Chalice, I was very put off by the self-righteous monk Paul, and wondered why the author chose to have the majority of the story told through his flashbacks. Wouldn't it be better if it was all from Karelian's or Raven's POV? Someone I didn't want to slap upside the head all the time? But, halfway through I changed my mind: I think the method actually works. Seeing things through Paul's angry, bitter perspective really drives in the way the Christian church was back then, how paranoid and suspicious of anything different or "pagan" or female. What a bleak world!
As for the narrator Paul himself, Marie Jakober does such an awesome job of psychological characterization that eventually I actually found myself feeling sorry for him - he's a ruined man in the end, and all by his own hand. No matter what lies he tells himself, or how much he prays, it doesn't give him any real contentment or peace. You reap what you sow, and all that.
So: The Black Chalice has well written villains (some simply loathsome and some creepily fanatical), an intelligent, honourable, but wonderfully flawed hero in the Count of Lys, lots of exciting battles and medieval Germanic politics, a sexy supernatural romance, interesting supporting characters, nice attention to historical details, and even some genuine religious criticism in there along with the pagan magic bits! It's a lovely, lovely book, and well worth reading. (But, hey... why rely on someone else's opinion when you can read it and judge for yourself?)
Bite 'Em in the Ass.......2006-10-04
I enjoyed this book enormously because Jakober has it down cold. If your life has been stunted by conventional religions, this is the book for you. She tells it as it is, free of sugar-coating, free of chin-trembling piety, free of myth. Wicca is presented from another viewpoint; magic is not shirked; clergy are exposed for what they are.
Irritating!!!.......2005-04-24
"In this irritating, brilliant novel..".. The character of Paul was so irritating I couldnt even finish the book. With 75% Paul, and only 25% Karelian, it was very disappointing. I adored Even The Stones by this author; this novel could have been just as great, but there was too much Paul...The pious homophobic repressed ramblings of Paul... UGH they are so tiresome. Take away the beautifully written parts involving Karelian and Raven, and you have a very dull read!
Captivating.......2004-05-21
This book ended much, much differently than I thought it would when I started it. It is utterly captivating, in the true sense of the word. Jakober draws you in to her characters; they become real. The stories themselves are complex - the way only stories with a ring of truth can be. The plots are intricate, subtle, and maddeningly intoxicating. Once you get started, you don't want to stop.
Jakober is a gifted storyteller, and Edge Science Fiction Fantasy Publishing has produced a stunning book. I saw this book from across the room and knew I had to have it. If you get the chance, get the hardcover copy. This is one of the best-written stories I have read in many, many years.
Belief, betrayal, love, but not enough of characters I liked.......2004-02-03
It is 1105 in Medieval Germany. Karelian of Lys has just returned from the Crusades with his squire Paul and a retinue of his men. It was a long, horrifying war, but Karelian has earned some land and money and wishes to settle down and raise a family. But, on the way to his wedding, a witch queen magically summons Karelian to her fabled castle in the mountains for the purpose of forging an alliance. She has powers that tell her Karelian's liege lord, the Duke believes he has the right to rule all of Germany and Christendom. He will not only bring war to the country, he will want to eliminate worship of the pagan deities she is devoted to. The Duke's attempt to take the crown of Germany will test loyalties in this novel of belief, magic, betrayal and love. Sorcery is inconsistent with Paul's Christian beliefs and although Karelian wants to live the rest of his life in peace, his love for the witch queen and his own beliefs draw him into the political struggle.
30 years later, Paul is a monk and he has been commanded to put the story to paper. However, the witch queen's enchantment forces his quill to spin the story truthfully, exposing all motivations and events regardless of whether Paul would have described them in a different light. Although Paul is writing the story, there are times where the perspective shifts and segments are narrated by the witch queen or Karelian, and these were welcome breaks from Paul's inner-conflicts. I would have appreciated a more linear chronicle to the flashback storytelling, but the device provides ample opportunity for Paul's self-reflection and ruminations about faith. Unfortunately, there is nothing redeeming about Christianity in this book and the pagan gods provide a contrast. Then there is the magic, which I determined to be a genetic trait, as religion seemed irrelevant to its practice. Although there is little magic at first, it builds in its usage until the magic is openly exercised as the conflict escalates.
There are a lot of great things about this book. This story truly sets a sense of time and place and the characterization was excellent. Although I know the whole book didn't take place in winter, much of the story does, and the overall feeling is cold and bleak due in part to the descriptions of the landscape and also the battles, killing, rape and other violence in the book. The writing was very well done. The part of the book where we meet Karelian's betrothed and learn about her narrow life and the consequences of her actions for a small piece of happiness were so well done, I would have appreciated more about her and her son. I didn't find the story as satisfying as I thought it could be and that is mostly because I wanted less of the irritating Paul and more of Karelian, his wife, his lover and the other characters I liked.

Customer Reviews:
Great advice and wonderful tips for parents of all ages.......2003-07-30
Parenting is a job that never ends, but it's a job that most of us signed up for willingly and joyfully. With Kathy Peel's advice and guidance in this new book, that joy can continue for many years to come as our children grow into adulthood. Family is for life, enjoy it while you can.
Drawing on her own 29 years of parenting experience, Peel offers 10 fact-filled chapters that offer insightful ideas, as well as helpful do's and don'ts that cover a wide range of topics.
Peel also includes quotes from her massive collection that deal with the varied circumstances faced in this unique situation. Two of my favorites are:
"Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in." - Robert Frost.
"Be nice to your children. They will be the ones who choose your rest home." - Phyllis Diller.
Peel's final chapter, The Portable Mom: The Mother of All Resources, is perhaps the most helpful. She includes practical ideas for helping your children go off on their own, from finding reasonable insurance to how to manage their money. The list of supplies that someone moving out on their own for the first time is detailed, complete and incredibly helpful. I wish I had a list like this when I moved out for the first time.

and it's fantastic. I am now buying a copy for my parents

Food for lady who has no time to cook.......2000-04-17
I bought this book on sale due to the food pictures in thebook. A person who love cooking usually can tell if the author isgood by looking at the pictures of the final product. What attracted me to get this book was her recipe for pick up drumsticks. That is the most simple recipe I had seen for baking up drumpsticks that looked like they were fried. Other ideas in the book are also great and time saving. Our church always having special holiday dinner or special dinner gets together for rivival meeting nights, etc. It is so hard to finds people who are willing to cook for such large audience. This is a life saver for ladies who are in charge of the food for those special occasion, even for a Chinese church. I had already shared some of the recipes with friends at church and they just can't wait to try them out (This also include busy guys who help their wives out with cooking). I highly recommend you to get a copy of this book. END
Terrific recipes for holiday and party entertaining........1997-11-24
I immediately went out and purchased this book after attending a party in which the hostess presented a beautiful and tasty appetizer buffet using eight different recipes from Season's Greetings. The recipes are all eye appealing, delicious and in most cases easy to make. Recipes also include make-ahead tips. I highly recommend it for the beginner as well as the seasoned hostess.

Highly sensationalized book.......2001-10-27
While much of what this Mr. Garrett writes can be helpful to someone new to the hobby of metal detecting (such as learning how to pinpoint targets, and how to dig for coins), this book must be read with these things in mind:
1) It is heavily biased since it is written by Charles Garrett of Garrett metal detectors. He neglects to mention or picture other metal detecor brands.
2) Mr. Garrett's discussion on detector technology is largely obsolete.
3) Many of the claims presented in the book are highly sensationalized and idealistic. Sure, the stories about people finding gold coins and hoards of buried coins are entertaining to read, but even my local coin dealer who sells coin detectors says he has never heard of anyone finding such items.
4) This book does not give a well-rounded view of the metal detecting hobby. Mr. Garrett only emphasizes the good and the sensational, making it sound like anyone can make a lot of money metal detecting coins. This is just not the case unless you make metal detecting your part-time job. To find the good coins, you will have to spend a great deal of time researching (which Mr. Garrett mentions) and even then, you will have to dig a lot of trash. You can spend three hours in a field and all you find is a button and a few current coins. Garret's book gives you the impression that gold coins are buried right in your backyard. This is simply not true. Avoid this book, as it is nothing more than an elaborate Garrett sales brochure.

Great book, but promotes the Garrett brand..........2000-08-21
This is a great book which got me started in metal detecting. It is extremely helpful, and will motivate treasure hunters by giving ideas on new places to hunt, it is also written very well and is easy to understand. The only drawback is that like most Garrett texts it promotes Charles Garrett's personal brand of metal detector
Beginner to the hobby of coin-shooting?.......2000-01-09
Beginner or experienced, you will love this book! The New Successful Coin Hunting is a modern version of Garrett's previous book "Successful Coin Hunting". The New version gives you ideas where to hunt, how to hunt, dig, clean, and even how to choose the right metal detector! It even has information on the newer computerized detectors. This is the book you want to take out on the 'field' with you when you hunt. Happy hunting!

Terribly Dissapointed.......2001-03-11
I read this book along with two other of Garrett's and beleive that they are nothing but a bloated advertisement and self-promotion of their detectors. What a great deal for them! The reader is paying to read their advertisements. Recommend you remove this from your book listing as it is a scam.

Inspired by Japan's evocative Shunga woodblock prints, this young Japanese painter and illustrator has created a world of stunning erotica and seduction. Genderless bodies can be found intertwined in scenes cloaked in brilliant colors and executed to perfection. Yamamoto's first publication is filled with a troubling beauty that addresses not only Japan's historical pillow books, but a contemporary dialogue free from gender or taboos. A stunning must-have for any erotica collector or lover of beautiful books.

Sinister, Sensual, Spellbinding: a feast for the eyes!.......2006-08-17
DISCLAIMER:
Any unauthorized reproduction of my review (also in excerpts) will have legal consequences! The author.
Combining the extremely Bizarre with the hyper Elegant and the stark Erotic, Yamamoto Takato stands in the tradition of Aubrey Beardley, Gustav Klimt and Erté. Apart from ukiyo-e, his inspiration clearly lies in the Vienna Secessionist Movement (Wiener Sezession) which was the Austrian specification of European Art Nouveau.
By adding his very own and unique brand of the macabre and a certain amount of - at times repulsive - bloodthirstiness, Mr. Yamamoto achieves a feast for any art connoisseur's eyes. His drawings are in a way interactive, inviting the viewer to detect hidden meanings and decipher visual allusions. With his almost obsesssed love for details and stark contrasts, he 'd make an outstanding photographer too.
I highly recommend Hiiro no Maniera, Altar of Narcissus, Allure of Pharmakon, Divertimiento for A Martyr and other Yamamoto Takato works to anyone who appreciates great art that appeals not only to the senses but to the intellect as well. Hopefully we will get many more illustrations by Mr. Yamamoto in the years to come - and with a bit of luck, some photographs as well.
BTW his name is Takato, NOT Takata as listed by Amazon ^^

Book Description
You are invited to take a journey, along with the author, to her hometown in the American South, a unique culture of relative safety within a sheltered small town in the mid-twentieth century. You will discover a time when sorority girls were virgins, baton twirlers mattered, and Elvis PresleyÂ's hips were the wildest thing on the block.
Against the backdrop of groundbreaking musical environments from Memphis, Tennessee to the Mississippi Delta, you will share stories that follow Elvis and his rise to fame through the eyes of his Graceland neighbors in the small suburb of Whitehaven. The authorÂ's mother, a young girl who was as much a celebrity in this small town as Elvis, reveals never-before-shared photographs and stories that chronicle a town, an extraordinary man, and a time forever lost to history, each on the brink of explosion and change.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2004-12-01
I found this book at my place of work, just lying around. It is awesome! Very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone.
thoroughly enjoyable read!.......2004-09-25
I very much like this book about Elvis, as told from the perspective of one neighboring family whom Elvis looked up to from the minute he started to become successful. Anyone who wants to know about Elvis' early days and his desire to be accepted into the old money society set in Memphis should definitely read this book. Excellent.
Wow!.......2004-01-17
Getting inside the early world of Elvis was fascinating. Sometimes sad, sometimes surprising, sometimes funny, but definitely more revealing and intimate than a lot of other books. I'm so glad I found this!
Even the children betray Elvis Presley.......2004-01-12
Even the children betray Elvis Presley for only damned money.
Elvis always respected children and these little people sell him wholesale.
