Book Description
Bailed out of jail and holed up in a low-rent motel, amnesiac Eric Ashworth's only memory is a woman's name: Desiree. With steadily increasing doses of a strange new hallucinogen, Eric finds that the drug allows him to reassemble his past in broken fragments. But as he begins to lose touch with the present, his distinction between truth and fantasy begins to crumble, creating a world where divisions between love and loss, violence and tenderness, and fact and fiction are less discernible than they ought to be.

Stunningly vivid........2007-05-29
This book gripped my attention from the very first sentence. I was hooked after the first paragraph, and by the end of the first chapter I was completely addicted. This book is much more vivid and imaginative that Clevenger's first book, The Contortionist's Handbook, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The imagery is incredible, the use of prose is totally satisfying, framing intangible experiences into something that is simple enough for anyone to appreciate, but it's the same stunning simplicity that weaves a story that, once you finish, you'll want to read it all over again. I know I did.
I only wish Clevenger had more published work for me to get my hands on.
Past? Present? Drug induced coma? Ah, Dermaphoria!.......2007-04-23
I'm a Palahniuk fan and therefore thought I should read Clevenger. I enjoyed "Contortionist's Handbooks." "Dermaphoria" was a bit different. His writing style hasn't changed, but reading this book was, at times, like watching "Memento" or "21 Grams" on shuffle.
The first 100 pages is more or less a drug-induced haze. This first half seems to be introducing the reader to the lingo, which is fine in 200 page quick read. After the first 100 pages, then the pace starts to pick up. And what has been happening becomes much more clear.
The only problem for "Eric" is that he's not sure what's real and what is not. Therefore, neither do we. At times, I felt cheated, other times, I felt like I had figured it out. By the end of the book, I was left feeling a bit empty and a tad unsure as to what had happened.
I gave this 4 stars since I enjoyed the ride. I really enjoyed the style and recommend this book to anyone who likes Chuck Palahniuk or this vein of writers. Look for a fast read, but don't look for a lazy read. You have to pay attention and be ready for the twists and turns the plot takes.
Intense.......2007-03-17
I was totally engaged by the unexpected twists and turns of this book. The story unfolded in a way that kept me from guessing the direction of even the next page much less the overall plot.
Dermaphoria by Clive Clevenger.......2007-02-17
If you liked "The Contortionist's handbook, then this will please.
He has a certain ellipsis of style that is most effective - less is more.
This book is a rush and should be read as such. It is to be engaged and consumed with attention for maximum effect. The immersion will be worth it in imaginative terms. His writing is confident and direct. It is fresh and immediate in its impact and is sufficiently intelligent and clever to hold your attention for the duration. Wholeheartedly recommended.
More Than Skin-Deep.......2007-02-08
I was going to start this review by comparing Clevenger's writing to that of Chuck Palahniuk and Will Christopher Baer. He's got the pace and acerbic plot-mind of one and the visceral, dizzying prose of the other. Then I flipped to the acknowledgements, and there, on the second paragraph, Clevenger thanks them both. "Well, no wonder," I thought. Fans of either (or both) Palahniuk and Baer are bound to love "Dermaphoria."
Clevenger starts with a classic (and almost trite) premise: a man wakes up in a hospital, and the only thing he knows is one name -- Desiree. The man (Eric Ashworth) -- sought after by info-hungry cops, antsy attorneys, and dispassionate mobsters -- attempts to piece together his life, bit by bit, around that one name, using both old-fashioned persistence and a new street drug. The substance, called Skin, synthesizes the sense of touch, using it to extract reality-rich remembrances from an ever-expanding history ("Having more memory is just a way of distorting a greater amount of the past," says one character). The only problem? Skin comes with some pretty serious side effects. And, furthermore, who's to say that the results are 100% accurate?
One part mystery, one part noir, and every bit of it a puzzle of firey, arresting prose, "Dermaphoria" is a great book. Ashworth's disorientation is made all the more palpable by Clevenger's crackling writing. Some might find the descriptions over-written, but I'd say he hasn't written enough. This 214 page novel is a quick read, ending faster than it takes a firefly to blink. Clevenger's descriptions are hefty and mobile, apt and stunning, and everything is slathered with import (even the names themselves, Ashworth and Desiree and others, are totems for a larger point). This book is about more than just drug overdoses and regrets, and like his contemporaries (even more so than Palahniuk, I'd say), Clevenger refuses to dilute his tale with bromides or easy outs.
However, even if you don't have the inclination to dig beneath the topsoil of Clevenger's mesmerizing world, you can still enjoy the lusciously dirty surface. It's a tale that is rewarding on multiple levels, superficial or subliminal, and although the ending is chaotic and heart-breaking (Clevenger's male protagonists never seem to catch a break), it also proves there's a real heart there to be broken. Dark, smart, gritty, and spare, "Dermaphoria" gets under the skin and stays there. You should read it, and then read it again.
In case you forgot anything.

absolutely brilliant.......2007-06-04
Captivating diction, brilliant imagery, and I especially love the jaded & cynical monologue of the protagonist. Clevenger effectively brings the real mechanics of paranoia to the forefront of the reader's attention; and not in a stupid or adolescent manner. He brings you into the fear and sickness, the world falling apart around you. The enemy always watching, the codes they speak, the patterns they manipulate into your reality.
He makes me want to throw out all my manuscripts and never write again. Terribly jealous, esp w/ the use of bugs & chemistry as the metaphors for reality breakdown.
Book Description
It is 1321, and Lady Elizabeth of Topsham, prioress of St. Mary's, is fighting to retain her position in the face of devastating opposition. She has been accused by Sister Margherita, St. Mary's treasurer, of giving much-needed funds to the new vicar, a man she often sees alone at night. Many of the nuns are convinced that Margherita would make a better prioress—especially now that it is certain that Moll, a young nun, was murdered in her sick bed. Sir Baldwin Furnshill, Keeper of the King's Peace, together with his old friend Simon Puttock, are summoned to investigate. There is no doubt that the threefold vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty are being broken with alarming frequency. Then, when a second nun is murdered, they find themselves facing their most difficult case yet.
Customer Reviews:
Murder in The Priory.......2006-08-21
Michael Jecks gave up a career in the computer industry when he began writing the internationally successful Templar series. Well all I can say is the Computer Industries loss is the reader's gain. He has now written about a score of the Knights Templar mystery books featuring Sir Baldwin de Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock and there are more to follow. Michael's books are full of intrigue and mystery and they are particularly well researched. Mr. Jecks lives in the area he writes about and I am sure this must assist him a great deal with his background research.
It is 1321 and the prioress of St. Mary's, Lady Elizabeth Topham is fighting to retain her position as prioress in the face of almost overwhelming opposition. She has been accused by Sister Margherita, the treasurer at St. Mary's of giving much needed funds to the new vicar.
Many of the nuns are convinced that Margherita would make a better prioress, especially now that it is known that a young nun named Moll was murdered in her sick bed.
Sir Baldwin and Simon are summoned to investigate and it quickly becomes evident that the vows of obedience, chastity and poverty are being broken with alarming frequency. Then a second nun is murdered and the two men face one of their most puzzling assignments.
Immorality runs rampant.......2004-11-21
In looking for a new mystery series, I decided to try a book by Michael Jecks and chose this one. It was awful. You could hardly pay attention to the mystery (which was not a winner anyway) for the garbage about the nuns and monks carrying on various affairs. I know that there were people who did not keep their vows, but I honestly doubt that there was ever a convent so filled to the brim with promiscuity. As a reader, you never turned a corner without coming upon a dishevelled nun coming out of the bushes.
For someone who was brought up on Ellis Peters' Cadfael or Margaret Frazer's Dame Frevisse or any of the hundreds of other historical mysteries, I can definitely recommend NOT buying this book. As I said, it was awful.
Belladonna At Belstone.......2003-10-02
The story is very intriguing, full of mysteries and twists.
Although it is kind of weird that unfit women wind up as nuns, it is the uniqueness of the story and the creativeness of an author to come up with this book that makes it entertaining. In my opinion this story will stir our minds to the reality of the world but such fictional story is not to be taken so seriously enough to depress the readers. Fictional stories are intended to entertain, but at same time make us more aware.
Story is well-written, and there is plenty of mystery, but--.......2001-02-14
I'm afraid that I still found this novel to be more depressing than anything else. Even given the time period of the story, and the fact that at that time some women who were not fit to be nuns ended up in convents, I found all of the nuns in the story to be such liars and so plainly unfit to be nuns that I felt the convent shouldn't have been left standing at the end of the story. It didn't seem to me that there was even one woman within the story who really should have stayed in the convent. Perhaps Lady Elizabeth and Margherita came the closest - by the end of the story - to becoming "real nuns."
Belladonna At Belstone.......2000-08-11
A young nun at St. Mary's Priory dies whilst in care at the infirmary; the prioress of the nunnery is struggling to retain her position in spite of accusations of immorality and fraud. The Keeper of the King's Peace, Sir Baldwin Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock are called in to investigate the charges. And in the midst of all this mayhem, another nun is murdered. This mystery lives up to expectations. There are enough twists and turns to keep an avid mystery lover happy and satisfied.
Michael Jecks' West Country mysteries have always been a favourite of mine and I'm always delighted when a new one is published! Definitely a series to be collected and enjoyed again and again.

Customer Reviews:
a solid novel by a masterful storyteller.......2005-09-24
Set in a world similar to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, K.D. Wentworth's Moonspeaker overcomes its generic trappings with unexpected grace and humor. But wheras Bradley relies on the over thirty novels in her series, set over a period of many centuries, to provide her readers with a complex and fully realized backdrop, Wentworth accomplishes the same feat in one short novel.
Good sequel to MOONSPEAKER........2003-03-11
This is the sequel to MOONSPEAKER, which is an excellent fantasy. Once again, I enjoyed reading about this world of psi talents. I did go down a star because some of the side trips were a little mind-boggling. I would also have liked a little bit more interaction between Haemas and Kevisson. They spend most of the book apart, which is a shame because they make a fabulous couple. But that's the romance reader in me.
Escape into an excellent fantasy........2003-03-11
I enjoyed the story of young Haemas on the run from her home for a crime she doesn't remember committing. She is pursued by both good and evil searchers. The use of psi talents is put to good use by the author. I went directly to the sequel, HOUSE OF MOONS.
Moonspeaker, a Review.......2000-10-14
The Kashi Lords of Desalaya can enter the snug warrens of another mind as easily as gold slips through water. This is the world of Haemas, daughter and young heir to the House of Tal'ayn, who must relearn to guard her whispered thoughts and rebuild her powers when she flees her mountain home of Kith Shiene, tormented by half-memories that she may have murdered her father.
Haemas is pursued through the protective psi barrier and into the coarse Chierra lowlands by her cousin, Jarid, who hopes to destroy the only link to the truth locked in Haemas's mind. She is also sought by a trained searcher, Kevisson, intent on returning her to face the Council. But a third power seeks Haemas, one that can remember a time before the Kashi Lords learned to misuse the mysterious ilsera crystals and threaten the very existence of Desalaya.
Moonspeaker is a finely crafted tale to curl up with in front of a fire on a cold night whether you are fond of fantasy or science fiction.

Customer Reviews:
Good, quick, read........2005-09-29
Very good book. I also enjoyed the fact that it was a fairly quick read. You take the quiz, and then you read up on which personality style you are. It had great information, and a great prespective in all. And if you decide to (as I did) you can also read up on all of the other personalities, for more insight, and information. And with being a Mom of 3, it was great that I could read it, put it down, pick it back up and read some more, and not feel "lost."
GREAT PARENTING RESOURCE.......2003-09-02
Janet Levine is a master at translating Enneagram theory into practical application. Her previous book (The Enneagram Intelligences)on the learning and education styles based on one's enneatype is one of my favorite enneagram books. Her latest work will help all of us dealing with the greatest job in the world, parenting.
This book is short on complicated enneagram terminology and theory. It is definitely geared for a general audience. Even so, if you have studied the enneagram in depth, this is the most comprehensive treatment of parenting from an enneagrem perspective. It has a pragmatic focus on identifying your type and the issues it brings to the child rearing table. Very workable exercises and solutions are provided as well to help you grow past and from these.
I hope that Ms. Levine produces a complimentary volume dealing with raising children from their enneatype. That would be a welcome addition to any library.
A critical addition to your parenting toolkit!.......2003-03-31
There are so many wonderful parenting books that help advise and guide us to be the best parents we can be and to bring out the best in our child. However, Janet Levine's Know Your Parenting Personality offers something every parent needs...a blueprint to our personality and our children's personality and how they interact. Levine lays out a clear and highly accurate roadmap to navigating our strengths and developing our weaknesses so we can ultimately give our kids the best we have to offer without getting in our own way. For every parent who wants to connect with their children, reduce stress and be a source of life long support to their child, read this book... and keep it on your nightstand to refer to over and over again. You will benefit from the knowledge and your children will benefit for life.

Book Description

Hey, this book is pretty good. I find it interesting to read about where she comes from, her blended family and etc. It is a good book to build your Spanish vocab. Espero que lo leas!
What a role model!.......2002-01-29
I loved this book. Loved reading about the integrity and hard work and perfectionism this artists brings to her music. Shakira's the real deal. We can all learn from this kind of dignity and sense of self. What a hero -- especially in this age of inflated egos and marketing hype.
Not the best but not that bad either..........2001-12-06
As a big Shakira fan I bought this book the minute I saw it. This book is fairly good. If you are a new Shakira fan, I reacommend it. It tells the story of how this Latin Pop/Rock Icon became the huge star she's today. It tells the struggles and problems she had to overcome for reaching her goals and dreams. If you have known Shakira for a while you'll have already herad almost they say here...

Book Description
Shakira, which in Arabic means "woman full of grace," is poised to become one of the biggest crossover successes in music history. She landed her first record deal when she was a mere thirteen years old, recorded her second album at sixteen, and starred in a popular soap opera-all before graduating from high school. She was only 19 when her third album, "Pies Descalzos ("Barefoot") made her the bestselling female rock star in Latin America, and the most promising one of the decade. Her fourth album, the gutsy, rock-infused "?Donde estan los ladrones?" ("Where are the thieves?") went platinum eight times in the US and earned countless awards for Shakira, including Latin Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Her tunes are melodic, musically surprising and gritty, with intellectual lyrics, and have assured her position as a pioneer who has redefined the scope of Latin American singers. Despite finding great success at such a young age, 23-year-old Shakira remains remarkably grounded, confounding the usual stereotypes associated with rock stars. She is a devout catholic, lives with her parents, and prefers to spend time with her family when not touring or recording. She is one of those rare stars that combine talent, charisma and boldness, and at the same time keeps her feet firmly planted on the ground. For the most exciting singer/songwriter to come out of Latin America since Ricky Martin, the possibilities are endless. For the millions that already buy her albums, Shakira represents the voice of a new generation.

Shakira's crossover success has been predicted for years by those in the know. She landed her first record deal when she was a mere thirteen years old, recorded her second album at fifteen, and starred in a popular soap opera in her native Colombia. She was only nineteen when her third album, Pies descalzos (Barefoot), made her the bestselling female rock star in Latin America. Though her fourth album, Dónde están los ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), went platinum eight times in the U.S., it was her electrifying performance at the first annual Latin Grammys that captured the attention of the nation. Despite finding great success at such a young age, twenty-four-year-old Shakira remains remarkably balanced, confounding the usual stereotypes associated with rock stars. She is a devout Catholic, lives with her parents, and travels everywhere with them. She is one of those rare stars who combine talent, charisma, and boldness, and at the same time keep their feet firmly planted on the ground. For the most exciting singer-songwriter to come out of Latin America since Ricky Martin, the possibilities are endless. For the millions who already buy her albums, Shakira represents the voice of a new generation.

Basic "Shakira".......2003-07-31
Shakira's rousing Latin music, belly-dancing and pleasant personality have snagged the attention of the American public. Alas, now she has her own fan-oriented biography -- a rather vague background outline, peppered with career information and talk of how great she is.
"Woman" follows Shakira from her childhood as a bright, talented child to a burgeoning singing sensation in her native Columbia, then finding instant stardom in the US. Her religion, her family, her boyfriends, and her insights into life (such as when a bag of her songs was stolen) are gone into, but not in-depth.
Few biographies of actors or singers who are still alive are any good. However, "Woman" is lacking even among the quickie celebrity biographies. Ximena Diego, a Spanish-language entertainment editor, shoots for a professional look at Shakira, and succeeds in outlining her career, her CDs, her career ups-and-downs, and the festivals and concerts she played at. Unfortunately, there isn't much more to the biography than that.
Ximena Diego is a fan of Shakira's, and it shows. We're told frequently how talented, how sweet, how wonderful Shakira is. Why do we need to be told at all? The most frustrating thing is that while Diego has clearly done her research, she fails to balance out Shakira's personal interactions with her professional life. There's hardly anything about her friends or non-music accomplishments.
Die-hard Shakira completists may want this, or people who are just finding out about her. But for those who want something of substance about the "woman full of grace," wait for the next book.
this is about shakira!.......2003-07-30
yeah, it is! there's not a bunch about columbia, it's about shakira! you get the info about her childhood, little known facts(she used to want to be an astronaut, did you know that?) people who didn't believe in her(her music teacher told her she had a voice like a goat) and info about her first two albums. The reason I give this 4 stars is because of the lack of photos-we could have some childhood photos here! Other than that, don't listen to the other guy, this book is worth a look!
A school report about Columbia by a Shakira fan.......2003-02-18
This book reads like a report on Columbia. I don't care about the number one exports, all I care about is Shakira. A little bit of info is dispersed among lots of factoids about her homeland.
