Harold Schechter is a historian: he takes old files and yellowed newspaper clippings, and brings their stories to life. Deviant is about everyone's favorite ghoul, Ed Gein--whose crimes inspired the writers of Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Silence of the Lambs. Schechter deftly evokes the small-town 1950s Wisconsin setting--not pretty farms and cheese factories, but infertile soil and a bleak, hardscrabble existence. The details of Gein's "death house" are perhaps well known by now, but the murderer's quietly crazy, almost gentle personality comes forth in this book as never before. As Gary Kadet wrote, in The Boston Book Review, "Schechter is a dogged researcher [who backs up] every bizarre detail and curious twist in this and his other books ... More importantly, he nimbly avoids miring his writing and our reading with minutiae or researched overstatement, which means that although he can occasionally be dry, he is never boring."
Also recommended: Schechter's books about Albert Fish (Deranged) and Herman Mudgett a.k.a. Dr. H. H. Holmes (Depraved).
Customer Reviews:
Short and to the point.......2007-09-02
Ed Gein was just CRAZY INSANE!!!!! The author did a good job in trying to figure out what in the WORLD could have compelled someone to such insanity. Good read
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-08-06
This was a great book! I was completely obsessed with reading it. I finished it in two days. The prose wasn't terribly difficult. This book really went into the facts of the case in an interesting way. You end up feeling a little sorry for Ed Gein, but still never wanting to have been around him in any way. I recommend this book for anyone who loves true crime stories or like to read about psychopaths.
One of the best true crime books I've read..........2007-06-12
Ok, so I'm kind of cheating because I haven't finished reading it yet, but since I got this a couple of days ago I haven't been able to put it down. It starts with Ed Geins parents and go's into very detailed chapters about everything leading up to Ed Gein. I personally only read true crime books because for myself I try to understand how people become killers, its my finding that 98% of serial killers, mass murderers etc are the way they are because of over possessive mothers and weak fathers, if they even had a father at all. I highly recommend this book and another book called "Cannibal" which is about a man called Armin Mewes who posted an ad on the internet for someone to surrender themselves to be eaten. If you love true crime you will LOVE this book!!
Murder & Graverobbing.......2007-02-22
Harold Schechter presents 'Deviant', the true crime book about Ed Gein, the inspiration for Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Buffalo Bob in Silence of the Lambs. Schechter gives us a run down of Gein's life from childhood up to around age 12, then jumps forward into his adult life with the death of his father, brother, and mother. From there we get into the public interest of this man, the murders and grave-robbing followed by his arrest and institutionalization and eventual trial. The atrocities Gein performed are covered almost a tad bit lacking in detail but that's one of the good things of the book is the presentation of the facts rather than the exploitation of the crimes.
I'm split on this book. Schechter presents a pretty thorough covering of the events of Ed Gein and the media circus surrounding it. However, he spends a lot of time naming police officers, judges, and doctors that have little interest to us, the readers. After reading Schechter's excellent book on Albert Fish, I just expected more from this one on Ed Gein. Don't get me wrong, it's a good book but the flow just didn't work for me this time around.
Disappointed.......2007-02-08
I was very diappointed in this book. I was expecting to read and to learn more about Ed Gein, than the town, cops, judges, and etc.... If you don't want a lot of information then this book will be good, if you wanted to learn more about Gein, get a diffrent book.
Customer Reviews:
OUT OF AMERICA'S HEARTLAND..........2006-06-04
This is a well-researched book about Ed Gein, the mild mannered, Midwestern psychopath from Plainfield, Wisconsin who, in the nineteen fifties, would shock the nation with his gruesome crimes. Ed Gein would become the basis for the best selling book by Robert Bloch, "Psycho", as well as for the Hitchcock film of the same name. Accounts of Ed Gein's heinous crimes would also enter the consciousness of a young Tobe Hooper who, as an adult, would write and direct the classic cult film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".
The author writes a cogent, factual account of the life of Ed Gein and the grisly crimes that shocked the nation at the time of their discovery. It details the hold that Ed's domineering mother had on him, a hold that would manifest itself in unimaginable ways. It is almost hard to believe that this small, inoffensive man could be such a madman, but who but a madman would do what he did? Ed Gein, it was discovered, had turned his small farmhouse into a gruesome charnel house, replete with furnishings adorned with human flesh and bones.
Aficionados of true crime will find this book fascinating, as it is a well-written account of one of the most horrifying and bizarre series of crimes ever to be committed. Eight pages of photographs are included in the book and serve to provide the reader with a brief, visual glimpse into the life of Ed Gein, a man with a secret hobby so depraved that it would shock the entire nation when it came to light. Lovers of true crime accounts will be fascinated by this well researched foray into the life of a seemingly innocuous man from America's heartland who ended up being so deviant from the norm.
Disturbingly concise.......2002-12-07
This is an excellent study of the Gein legacy and the bizarre psychology behind it. This book goes way beyond shock-value books that are frequently published without much investigation-the author definately did his homework. Gein's Oedipal love/hate relationship with his mother, coupled with a sensitive nature and social incompetance became a deadly combination that culminated in the known deaths of two women (perhaps more) that reminded him of his dead mother, and numerous grave robbings. Although I don't by any stretch of the imagination condone the horrors Gein committed, the author can almost make this pathetic little man seem a tragic figure rather than an evil one.
Very Interesting..........2002-07-13
I am from WI so Ed Gein was a household name. I had
read one book before, but this one was MUCH better.
It grabs you from the moment you start it. Even though
you know the ending, it gives you a lot of insight into
Ed Geins world, which was wicked. What you saw on the
outside. A man with no family left, a mother who taught
him women were evil. People made mention of the fact
that he was "weird" but just Eddie Gein. Little did
they know the evil inside his mind and his farmhouse.
Yes, he was mentally ill but I do believe he knew what
he was doing,as he made lampshades etc.
In a way you do feel sorry for him, only a little.
It took me one day to read. Lets just thank he was never
let out....
Book Description
Since its inception in 1915, the Best American series has become the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction and nonfiction. For each volume, a series editor reads pieces from hundreds of periodicals, then selects between fifty and a hundred outstanding works. This unique system has helped make the Best American series the most respected and most popular of its kind. Assembled by best-selling suspense author Nelson DeMille, The Best American Mystery Stories 2004 contains a spectacular array of stories by mystery veterans and talented newcomers. Follow a chain reaction that saves a woman's life, visit a house haunted by a husband's violent killing spree, enter the high-stakes world of Las Vegas gambling, watch the line between reality and dream blur, travel with a bored salesman driven to crime, and much more. Encompassing all aspects of the genre, this year's selections are sure to quicken pulses, send chills down the spine, and keep readers continually guessing.
Customer Reviews:
ummm - where is the mystery?.......2006-07-03
You may think that you're buying a book of mystery stories, but no, the real mystery is why most of these stories in this volume aren't mysteries at all. If they had labeled this "Crime Fiction With No Mystery", then that would be more honest. Most of the stories in this volume have no real hidden element that keeps you guessing. Sure, there may be some good social commentary or character development here and there, but if I really wanted that stuff I wouldn't have picked up a book labeled "Mystery Stories".
Not really mysterious.......2006-03-11
Half of these stories were not even traditional mysteries at all: one was set in the civil war, one was more like a mainstream short story. And these were the better ones! One was a ripoff of Poe's Casque of Amontillado, while the lead story, bet on red, was cliched. Leave it to a fool like Nelson DeMille to pick some really bad stories. The only really good one was Steven Kings' semi-supernatural spine tingler, and that was more for the creepy language and timing he possesses, than for any original story ideas. Save your money.
Great Short Stories.......2005-08-30
Fascinating stories, varied and well written. Many surprise endings and unusual story lines. You'll enjoy it.

The great horror of modern history absorbed into the framework of surrealism, literary fantasy and the darkest children's fiction. Lautreamont and Sade meet Roald Dahl. The main protagonists are everyone's favorite comic heroes - Meng and Ecker - mutant twins, rescued from the death camps for 'research' purposes by the infamous Dr. Mengele. Unsurprisingly, this book has already appeared in court in Britain....

Helpful Tips Overall.......2006-07-12
Most of the tips in this book are helpful. Some may find them too simple but keep in mind there are a lot of simpleminded people in the world, moms or not.
All of the advice is without regard for Scripture, which lead to some unwise advice being given, for example, one was that you should make friends with someone who has kids that are a little older, so that you can get help from the more experienced kids and moms on what to expect the next year. Biblically you shouldn't try to make friends with someone just because of that. It would be simpler to just see what to expect by reading the Bible, talking with people on the internet, reading a book on childhood to adulthood, and simply getting to KNOW a person with older kids, rather than trying also to be their friend just because of their having older kids.
I'd also ignore the dietary advice, most of it is bad, such as recommending Cheerios as a quick breakfast (that's a great way to make your kids miserable.)
Some of the advice is vague, like putting your kids to childcare and getting a babysitter and not saying which kind, such as a Christian childcare or finding a christian babysitter, let alone seeing what it is they believe about the Bible (which lets you know how their behavior might be.)
Other than that this is a helpful book.
Survival Tips for Working Moms.......2000-06-05
This is an easy-to-read book for those working moms that don't have more than ten or fifteen minutes at a time to spare for reading! The "tips" are of high value, and give you more ideas than quick recipes for cooking on the go! Working mothers with newborns to teens will enjoy and value this book.

Customer Reviews:
Deceiving and disappointing.......1999-11-27
For those of us who need to limit our intake of fat to 2 grams or less per meal, this book is a huge disappointment. Now if it hadn't advertised itself as 'low fat' I wouldn't have had any gripes, but if you look in the forward, the book itself states that by low fat the authors mean '3 grams or less' yet there are recipes in this book containing a whopping 21 grams per serving. Furthermore, only about 1 in five that I could see flicking through it were within my range. Very disappointing! Had I flicked through it in a bookstore I would have passed it by. Be warned.
Easy, quick recipes.......1999-06-09
This is a great cookbook for anyone who needs to cut back on fat and calories...I follow Richard Simmons food plan and this book fits perfectly with his Move, Groove and Lose program. The recipes are quick and use things you will most likely find already in your kitchen.

Weston appears to do a very fine job presenting us with the various perspectives of the Villa -- the large living room, entryways, linear wood use, and of course the extraordinary pool and sauna. The integration of text with pictures makes the book accessible to students just beginning to embark on a study of this great Finnish architect.

Cultural Writing. Art. WHY DRAW A LANDSCAPE talks about the relationship of the self to the real world, and looks at different approaches to landscape by eleven painters and sculptors whose styles ranges from Realist to Conceptual. This book follows Kathan Brown's well-received WHY DRAW A LIVE MODEL? (also available from SPD) about which Artforum's Bookforum commented "The next best thing to being there." And from Contemporary Impressions: "Brown's style feels like a conversation with a friend." Includes 83 color plates.
Customer Reviews:
Words from one who understands.......2005-12-08
Kathan Brown has long been a champion of art, both in writing and in production: her Crown Point Press in San Francisco was founded in 1962 as has served as a resting place where artists can be 'in residence' to work with the outstanding staff of craftsman to create new ideas in etching and monoprint form from their busy careers of painting and drawing. In this excellent book Brown discusses the work of eleven artists whose preoccupation with the landscape provoked conversations with Brown that lead to this penetrating and wise interaction of ideas lightly titled WHY DRAW A LANDSCAPE?
The artists with whom Brown has a working relationship at the Press include Jane Freilicher, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, April Gornik, Pat Steir, Joan Nelson, Anne Appleby, Edward Ruscha, Robert Bechtle, Tom Marioni, Bryan Hunt, and David Nash. And is ever there were more disparate views of observing and drawing the landscape than this group of artists represents, it has not been the subject of writing. Brown writes with skill and wit and a natural warmth. In responding to the works of these artists and their views of the land, Brown states 'Irony may be on the way out as the darling of the art world avant-garde agenda', and few writers can state such a fact with quiet sensitivity better than Kathan Brown. This book is a fine adjunct to those who elect to investigate representational art and landscape art in particular. Grady Harp, December 05

Book Description
Credited with having "opened the floodgates of screen permissiveness" in 1959 with the landmark "nudie" The Immoral Mr. Teas, legendary independent softcore filmmaker Russ Meyer has continued throughout his 30-year career and 23+ films to expand the limits of screen freedom with such genre classics as Lorna (1964), Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1966), and Vixen (1969). Long recognized as an American auteur and honored by numerous international retrospectives of his work, Meyer's story provides valuable insights into independent filmmaking, the history of the modern sexploitation genre, and cinema censorship. Researched from underground, popular and film literature, this book also incorporates much of the material contained in Meyer's own vast archive, to give an in-depth study of the director dubbed "King Leer."
Customer Reviews:
Let The Meyer Buyer Beware!.......2001-09-03
Anyone expecting a definitive biography of the life and work of the Sultan of Sexploitation be warned -- this is anything but a biography! Instead, it is a BIBliography of newspaper and magazine articles having anything remotely to do with the auteur, his campy cinema classics and the ridiculously endowed women who graced them with their wildly varying acting abilities but always welcome presence. There are also numerous references to documents used during the obscenity trials that periodically hounded his career, particularly in connection with one of his best films, "Vixen."
However, these entries -- which are broken down by his personal life, his wives, the aforementioned actresses and, primarily, his films -- do contain one-paragraph descriptions that -- either by design or by accident -- reveal interesting tid bits on Meyer's sometimes fun, sometimes testy, but always interesting relations with his casts, his distributors and a public
that was never at a loss for strong feelings about the Man and his Mammarial MacGuffins. Also, there is a concise and well written essay at the beginning which covers Russ' career from his WWII newsreel shoots (including the invasion of Normandy) to the inception of his still unfinished video reminiscence of his work and the writing of his massive (and hideously expensive) three-volume autobiography, "A Clean Breast."
In the end, until a real biography comes along (the jury's still out on whether the new "The Very Breast of Russ Meyer" is a bio or just another reference guide) this 1990 squib will suffice as a provider of facts, figures and leads for hungry Meyer fanatics who've exhuasted all the web sites. And the crazy poster reproductions and pictures of the ladies don't hurt either.
