Penzler Pick, June 2000: Easy Prey is the 11th mystery to feature Lucas Davenport, who began his career back in Rules of Prey as a maverick homicide detective reminiscent of "Dirty Harry" Callahan. He did things his way and was often at odds with his superiors in the Minneapolis Police Department. Since those early days, Davenport has mellowed a little, and his background as a computer game-designing, Porsche-driving womanizer has been somewhat reduced. Possibly age has become a factor, or it may be the fact that Davenport has been deputy chief since the sixth book in the series, Night Prey. The character may have changed, but the writing has remained consistently taut: the bad guys creepy, the mysteries suspenseful.

In this newest episode, Davenport is called to a house after an A-list party has taken place there. Alie'e Maison, a top model, has been found strangled, and evidence shows that she ingested drugs and recently made love--most probably to a woman. Before Lucas leaves the house, things get even more complicated: a second body is found stuffed in a closet with a deep dent in the skull. In addition, one of Lucas's own men had been at the party and is now a suspect.

As always, Lucas's own life is not exempt from complications. An ex-lover comes back into his world--a woman he has never been able to forget--and she has secrets of her own. Also making an appearance this time out is a childhood friend to whom he turns for advice about women and life. Sister Mary Joseph, born Elle Kruger, is a professor of psychology and one of the computer brains who helps Lucas design his software. He calls her Nun the Wiser, and he often turns to her for spiritual as well as more concrete advice. Lucas is going to need all the help he can get to unravel his case as secrets pile upon secrets and the ground constantly shifts under his feet.

Easy Prey is another powerful link in this chain of muscular, exciting thrillers by one of the most distinguished practitioners in the field. --Otto Penzler

2 out of 5 stars Sort of, Kinda, Would Be Prey.......2007-09-25

This Prey novel starts with a so-so premise, with a model getting killed, and Lucas Davenport investigating. The novel has some okay twists, but its nothing special. We get within 20 pages of the end, we think we know who the killer is. Then, out of the blue, they say the killer is some body, who, up untill this point, had never been mentioned. Not by name, nothing. When I first read it, I went, who? All and all, and okay novel, ruined by an awfull ending.

2 out of 5 stars Can hardly get through it...........2007-06-14

I have been zipping through the "Prey" series and have been loving every book. And then.....I hit this one and can barely get through it! I'm glad to see I am not the only one. If this is your first attempt at a "Prey" book please just start with the first of the series and don't judge Lucas Davenport or John Sandford by this attempt.

3 out of 5 stars Allmost Prey.......2007-01-18

This book could be summed up with one word, allmost. It allmost had a decent plot, decent ending, and was allmost a decent Prey edition. The problem? The killer is revealed, tweenty pages from the end. The killers, who's name had never been mentioned before that point. All of a sudden, Wha? Whos that? That's the killer? Where did he come from? Useually, I don't let the ending ruin the book, but this ending was so terrible.

1 out of 5 stars Simply dreck.......2006-10-19

This book is a waste of paper. Just awful. All aspects were poorly written, but first discovering the identity of the killer at page 500 of a 527 page book is not Sandford's style; in fact it's likely that Sandford was kidnapped by aliens who then tried to copy his previous success. If marooned on a desert island with only this book, I suggest it be eaten rather than read.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Prey Series!!!.......2006-08-03

As with all the other Prey books, this one captivates you and doesn't let go.

5 out of 5 stars Romance and Murder? Hey! It works........2004-03-08

I found this to be a good book. My dad bought it pretty cheap at some store, and shared it with me. I loved the mystery thriller part, using my mind to try and help Charlie solve the case using the clues the author gives. I also understand her reluctance to admit her feelings for her business partner, Zack, the accused murderer. The lengths she goes to to protect him from the slammer speak louder than words ever will, and you can't help root for these crazy kids to just work it out already!

5 out of 5 stars An explosive read with a hero to die for.......1997-05-20

Charlie Plato is part owner of CHAPS, a famous country western bar renowned for its otherowner former television star Zach Hunter. Charlie is campaign manager to Zach's effort win aseat on the local city council. However, her role dramatically changes when the political opponent is found strangled to death in the trunk of Zach's new car. .......The police officer in charge of the case believes that Zach is the villain of the piece. Charlie begs to differ because she knows Zach well. He may be a philanderer, but he is too gentle of an individual to be the murderer. What she is unaware of is that the effort to frame Zach has its roots in his past, a time he refuses to share with her or anyone. This places Charlie in the unenviable position of ferreting out a killer while digging into her partner's personal life. ......Although the danger to Charlie and Zach is very real, it is the romantic sizzle that flares up between them that alleviates the excruciating tension before the reader breaks. Margaret Chittenden also uses another clever ploy to ensure that everyone enjoys reading DEAD MEN DON'T DANCE. She adds a bit of the absurd into the personality of the heroine allowing the reader to understand why she cares about an individual that she is determined to stay away from at all costs. Ms. Chittenden is a fine author who is a natural born story teller, making this work a must have keeper. ..... Harriet Klausner

4 out of 5 stars don't judge this book by it's cover !.......2006-11-15

don't judge this book by it's cover !

the cover led me to believe the contents of this how-to art book would be sub-par, but for under two dollars (the used price) i was willing to take a chance and find out for sure. i am glad i did !

whoever selected the artwork for the cover should be fired (this had to be an intern at the publisher) for making such a terrible choice - this is the weakest (by a long shot) illustration in the entire book and is not representative of the contents at all ... i don't know how it came to be included in the book at all, now that i think about it

what the book does cover is basic character development (illustrating the drawing basics) for a wide range of characters, who are initially shown in simple poses (which helps to avoid unnecessarily complicating matters at this point). next come body and face drawing details, and then there are character development illustrations showing how slight changes can affect a character (this can be used to avoid mistakes or refine a character of your own). another section shows characters involved in a wide range of action poses, and there is also a collection of hand poses, with hands holding various weapons, and other items, in a variety of angles, etc. which should very useful to anyone without a model sheet. finally there are a few pages covering fabrics and folds in a business suit ... very simply demonstrated. and, of course, there is the obligatory section on materials and how to use them

and, finally, the book makes no claims to demonstrate rendering magna, or painting realistic landscapes - how do some people get so easily confused ?

4 out of 5 stars Heroes? Cool! Love the poses collection!.......2005-01-26

The one I had was the original Japanese version, but they are the same anyway, so I hope my review will be helpful to you in a sense. ^^ Well, as mentioned in the book title “Super Character Design & Poses Volume 1: Hero”, this book teaches you how to draw Heroes, including “heroic” poses as well.

The book starts off with a few works of the artist, along with some explanations to help you determine what consists of the characteristics of a “hero”. Then the book moves on to teaching you how to draw heroes’ bodies, faces and hair. And there is also a section on hero’s character design and some basic pen’s techniques.

What I find really useful is the “poses” collection at the back of the book. There’re many really cool and dynamic poses of the hero in a variety of categories such as “fly”, “blade”, “run”, “kick”, “punch”, shot”, “bicycle”, “hand” and so forth. I wish there were more selection and collection of poses though, but I guess it’s understandable given the limited space of the book.

Also, there’s a CD-Rom that comes with the book. This CD-Rom contains the same -drawings as the book so you can use it to practice drawing or coloring. The only minus I can think about is book is that some of the characterizations have a certain “American” look to it. But then again, it’s probably the way the mangaka wants it to be.

Overall, it’s a great resource and reference book to have especially if you’re drawing lots of “hero” stuff!

                        3 out of 5 stars A n00b on the l00se?.......2003-04-14

This book, is very, very poorly translated...

It's important that you understand, that this books does
NOT teach you HOW to draw Manga(I say manga, because that's
what his style looks like, but he doesn't claim anywhere
                        that it indeed IS manga)!
Rather, it gives you a lot of good examples on what a hero could
look like, and the poses they could be in.

The artist is a beginner, and I could do some of the drawings a lot better...

The included CD-ROM, though, is pretty nifty with all the same
drawings from the book. I've found this to be extremely useful
for learning how to color pictures in photoshop...

Buy it at your own risk, make sure to check it at a bookstore
first, and have a look at it for yourself.

                          Book Description

"Often the pregnancy complication and the need for bed rest arise suddenly and unexpectedly, causing the woman and her family to face myriad problems. . . .This book can be an invaluable resource under such circumstances." (From the Foreword by Richard H. Schwarz, M.D., Obstetrical Consultant to the March of Dimes

Statistics indicate that up to 700,000 expectant women a year -- that's one in five mothers-to-be -- are prescribed bed rest as treatment during complicated pregnancies. Bed rest might sound like a relief at first -- but the combination of a possible high-risk birth and a lengthy period of staying off your feet can be stressful.

Amy E. Tracy shares her experiences -- and those of many others -- to help you and your family not only survive but thrive during your days in waiting. With information on everything from informing your employer and making arrangements with your health insurance to proper nutrition and calisthenics, this comprehensive guide also covers such topics as:
                          * Understanding Your Doctor's Orders
                          * Adjusting to Horizontal Living
                          * Coping with Short-term and Extended Hospitalization
                          * Limiting the Side Effects of Immobility
                          * Making Bed Rest a Family Affair
                          * Coming to Terms with Your Feelings
                          * Getting Back on Your Feet

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2003-10-09

This book is so helpful, easy to read and inspiring! Wish it was longer. A must read for those on bed rest for any duration.

3 out of 5 stars Short, brief, but has some good ideas.......2003-09-30

This is good, and helpful, it's just short. I was on the bedrest much longer than this author, and her suggestions weren't as helpful as I hoped they would be. I will be buying the other bedrest books for more suggestions.

3 out of 5 stars A good book, but comes up short.......2003-08-12

I have read every bed rest book I could find. This is not the best. The author has attempted to write a comprehensive book, and does a good job, just not great. There are better. It's very short, and after reading it, which took a couple of hours at most, I felt like I didn't have enough information. I wish the author would have had more experience with extended hospital bed rest. That would have been beneficial.

                          5 out of 5 stars Indispensable - Absolutely Fantastic!.......2003-03-01

This is a *wonderful* book for any pregnant mother who is dealing with bed rest! The author is a veteran of two complicated pregnancies involving extended bed rest and she has put together an amazing amount of information and resources in this book. I wish I'd had this book for my first two pregnancies and am SO GLAD to have it for my third!

The author includes a huge amount of information and practical suggestions for coping with bed rest. She gives great suggestions on how to get the help a bed rest mom will need and where to find the resources that might be available to help these mothers and their families. She also discusses in great detail both hospital bed rest and bed rest in the home.

There is also a fantastic section on coping with bed rest when one already has other children [and how to help the children cope!], as well as a great section on fathers.

I would recommend this book to any mother facing bed rest in her pregnancy - whether this is her first pregnancy or her fifth! This book is just overflowing with great information and is very encouraging and helpful. It is also a very easy and enjoyable book to read. It is very well written and worth every cent!

5 out of 5 stars The Bedrest Bible.......2002-09-02

Your search for a "Bedrest Bible" is over! The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book is chock-full of information, advice, resources, and personal stories from women who endured days, weeks, or months in bed. Amy E. Tracy, a bedrest veteran, answers every question you have--plus some you probably haven't even thought of yet--in a knowledgeable, friendly and easy-to-read style. My only complaint? I wish Ms. Tracy had written it in time for my own bedrest sentences!

Enola Prudhomme has genuinely brought her kitchen recipies to this wonderful cookbook. Her dishes are full of southern flavor and are made from things you probably have in your pantry right now. I also own her other cookbook - Low Calorie Cajun Cooking - and I love it just as much. I reach for one of Enola's cookbooks before any of my others. Her recipes are truly low fat, low calorie and low sodium but you would never know by the taste. (I double the salt but that is my taste.) I like these cookbooks so much I give them as gifts and get rave reviews from everyone I give them to. If you like spicy food and don't want the fat or calories, you can't go wrong with this one.

In the body of the text (new principles for collecting) Mr. Bushell fully displays the erudition one would expect from such a formidable collector but manages to do so in a way that is easy to grasp and immensely entertaining. Bravo, Mr. Bushell !

In some ways the author gives a better picture of Tolkien's England than Humphrey Carpenter; possibly because the latter is so much a creature of the same universe (born and brought up in Oxford) that he doesn't realise how different it is to some people.

But the author's errors aren't confined to Middle Earth:

Bournemouth isn't (and never has been) in Devon, you can't go 'along' the Carfax, Christopher Tolkien was a don at New College, not University College. Oxford doesn't have four teaching terms a year, the colleges don't award degrees, Exeter College isn't adjacent to Balliol...

He doesn't even know that the pound sign precedes the amount. He has apparently looked at a map of Oxford, but never been there. Indeed, the book reads as though he had never been to Britain.

I agree with the other reviewers: save your money.

I agree with what has been said already in most of these reviews, but felt compelled to add that while Grotta got a lot of information concering LOTR wrong, and while he obviously did bear a grudge against Christopher Tolkien and the Tolkien estate, he did manage to give a rather acceptible cursory introduction to Tolkien, and the amount of time spent discussing the legal battle between Ace and Houghton Mifflin was enlightening, if not slanted. I'd suggest that if you're looking for an introductory biography that you don't intend to take as gospel and wish to read quickly, this is for you. Otherwise, keep your money and read Carpenter's.

2 out of 5 stars Has facts about Tolkien but little understanding of his work.......2004-09-01

This is an easy-to-read and interesting book, which helps you to learn about J.R.R. Tolkien's life. Especially interesting to me was how The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion came to be published. It is true what other reviewers have mentioned -- that there are a few unfair snide remarks about J.R.R. Tolkien and his family. But these are only a few lines and are easily overlooked. Overall, the coverage is balanced and concentrates on facts, and avoids being either an attack on Tolkien or adoration of him.

But the author gets into trouble in the few parts where he attempts to discuss the content of LotR. You can't take seriously an analysis of Lord of the Rings by somebody who gets Moria and Mordor mixed up. There is a discussion of Christian themes in LotR which is interesting until Grotta makes the fantastic statement "Without a spiritual being in Tolkien's mythology who closely conforms to the Biblical archetype of the Devil (Sauron was a flesh and blood creature)...". Huh? The story of Melkor/Morgoth's fall in THE SILMARILLION exactly conforms to the story of Satan's fall and Melkor/Morgoth has exactly the role of Satan. Moreover, many readers of LotR -- including the ones who make a big-budget movie trilogy out of it -- would disagree that Sauron in the Third Age was a "flesh and blood creature". Likewise, later Grotta mentions that Thingol was Luthien's brother, although these are major characters in THE SILMARILLION and the father-daughter relation is very clear and important. None of these mistakes are small details; they show that Grotta isn't really very familiar at all with Tolkien's writings.

But as an easy-to-read overview of Tolkien's life, this book is fine.

2 out of 5 stars A Virtual Cornucopia of Misinformation .......2004-07-22

I must say that this biography created an odd sensation in me while in the midst of reading it. I was both enthusiastic and unsettled at the same time that it should be finished. The book is filled with ideas going in the wrong direction, misinformation, mediocre writing, a misrepresented Tolkien, a misrepresented Christopher Tolkien, a misrepresented Silmarillion, a misrepresented, ah, but I digress. The enthusiasm I felt was obviously about being able to complete it quickly, (it was written very simply, almost as if for a young adolescents), but the unsettlement arose from the fact that once I found some idea that was really out there, or some totally wrong info, I started to like looking for these, enjoying the non-fact filled fun of it all.

That is not to say that the book is all bad (hence the two stars) . Lacking the goodwill and blessings of the Tolkien Estatein writing this book, (that was given to the much praised Humphrey Carpenter,) he ends up basing it upon other writings, a few interviews of Tolkien fans and friends, and a large amount of guesswork, so he does a decent job of establishing Tolkien's early life and getting a few of the good professor's friends and old students to make a quote here and there. He also tells an interesting and factual (!!) tale of The Lord of the Rings' first print run and its subsequent print history. So far so good huh?

The problems start to arise almost at the begining when Grotta states that Tolkien was exceedingly lazy and noncommital, flitting from one project to another, hopelessly muddling things. While there is some degree of truth to this, there is no way anyone can say that these exaggerated terms are true. When you are a highly respected childrens author, , almost unarguably the best writer of English literature in this century, one of the highest decorated professors of language in western culture, and you create an entire world with history and multiple languages along with it, you don't really find time to be lazy.

Also, as in almost every other review of this book, Grotta shows a definate grudge against the Tolkien Estate, not pulling any punches when he mentions it. It is understandable that one might be hurt at the rejection, but hey, it is their choice who gets access to Estate holdings. You don't just let anyone who comes along wanting to write a biography have total and free access to your things, do you?

I will give him some slack because the main bulk of his text was written and published before the Silmarillion was released. This glaringly shows throughout the book though. He later (in a subsequent printing) includes a chapter about the Silmarillion, but he never goes back and fixes his inferrences about the early histories of Middle Earth. He says that there wasn't any evil before the creation of the world, but in the Silmarillion, the first part tells how Morgoth came to be before the creation! There are many more like this.

Another annoyance is in his new chapter on the Silmarillion, you can see that he just skimmed it, or maybe he just bought the cliff-notes. He makes out the Valequenta to be a lesser, almost nonessential work, (is he insane?), and the only real description of any of the stories found within is of Beren and Luthien. He does a quick and ugly job of it, making it sound rather boring, meanwhile he keeps saying that Thingol (the king and father of Luthien) is really Luthien's brother! Arrrggg.....

But one of the most glaring irresponsabilities is this, taking Christopher Tolkien's name and rubbing it around in the dirt. Grotta puts him down at almost every chance. He claims that Christopher actally rewrote huge sections of manuscript (in the Silmarillion), and that it could obviously be told because they weren't worded the way that Tolkien did in his other works, saying they were much more ameturish. Sorry bud, but there isn't any bit of ameture within any of his books, and there was never any intention of it being written in the same style. Actually, most of it was rewritten by Tolkien himself in an effort to fit in with his now published works (Hobbit and LOTR), and at the same time to condense it to a more readable narrative style, because the original works were to large to all be published together. He later goes on to say that he hopes that Cristopher doesn't have any intentions of writing his own fictions, Middle Earth or otherwise, because we can now see how poorly he writes. Ouch! On another note about Christopher, Grotta slips into calling him Tolkien as if it were his father's name, making for total confusion if your not paying close attention.

Another danger point of this book is the choice of artwork. Once again someone has taken the Hilderbrandt brothers' art and strewn it chaotically across the pages of a book. I guess it is rather fitting though that an irresponsibly written book should have irresponsible paintings. I know that these are just their interpetations, but come on, we don't have to make them so popular. Most of their work looks like it belongs in a children's fairy tale, which would be alright for the hobbit maybe, but perhaps they should have taken a que from Tolkien and when he changed his style to epic writing, they should have followed suit with epic paintings.Thay also seem to have a poor eye for the proper details, painting peoples and castles as if Tolkien didn't descibe them properly.

My final word is to avoid it at almost all costs, unless you find a cheap copy like I did to at least make the booksheves look nice.

                                                1 out of 5 stars Not Credible.......2004-02-25

I've only read some of this book so far, but it's apparent to me that the author has never read The Silmarillion and has read The Lord of the Rings only once. He makes consistent errors throughout the book with regard to Tolkien's world (such as mixing up Moria and Mordor and claiming Luthien is Thingol's sister), which leads me to wonder if he's even bothered to check up on his other facts. I get the impression that his critique of the Silmarillion is based on the reviews he's read and not having actually read the work himself. As others have noted, it's obvious he had some problems with Tolkien's survivors, as the venom towards them is apparent. Do yourself a favour and pass this one over for Humphrey Carpenter's authorised biography and The Letters of JRR Tolkien. You'll learn far more about the man, and from a far more credible source.

                                                        Product Description

One of this century's most beloved and enigmatic writers, J.R.R. Tolkien lived most of his life in a cloistered academic community, politely protesting that his elaborate, highly imaginative stories had no "inner meanings," and somewhat embarrassed by both the success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and the cult that grew around them. This biography illuminates the secret corners of Tolkien's life, showing how his traumatic childhood and his experiences in the trenches during WWI helped to fuel the fertile imagination that created such wondrous tales. 9" x 10".
