Book Description

Her beauty is spellbinding. Her hunger is insatiable. Her power is immortal.

Return with Maggie Shayne to the dark, erotic world of wings in the night . . .

A creature of the night, Sarafina revels in the glory of vengeance and rage. And she tries not to remember a time when she knew the meaning of love . . . before she was betrayed by the curse of her blood.

She plays for kicks, but never for keeps. Even when she spots William Stone at a local nightclub, she wants only to possess him long enough to satiate her deep, passionate hunger. His power and his strength excite her. But Will is much more than anything she could ever imagine.

He is a man of almost inhuman courage and defiance. He is as boldly alive as she is -- yet he is mortal. And he is irresistble.

Her dark desires lead them both into a world where dangerous interlopers are playing deadly games with Immortals. And as she is pulled into a bizarre vortex of vampire hunters madness and duty to protect the tender heart of the young girl who holds the powerful legacy of The Chosen, both Sarafina and Will find themselves forced to confront a hunger more powerful than any other: love.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not a keeper.......2007-03-01

Embrace The Twilight is the first book that I have read by Maggie Shayne and although a reasonable read it didn't quite hit the spot for me.

The story started a little slowly with Sarafina, a Gypsy woman, struggling to deal with problems within her group. Her sister Katarina dislikes her and although Andre, her boyfriend, takes care of her she knows that others in her group think there's something odd about her (apart from her being a seer, that is). Sarafina knows that there is a helpful Spirit sometimes with her who talks to her and keeps her company occasionally - and she loves this friendly Spirit. Unfortunately there's also a demon out there who is draining blood from people and Sarafina is concerned as she can hear this demon's voice in her head sometimes, as well as the friendly Spirit's.

Willem Stone is an American soldier who has been taken hostage and is being tortured. When the pain gets too bad he passes out and finds himself dreaming about a gypsy girl Sarafina, watching as she tries to build bridges with her sister, but he knows that Andre and Katarina are actually plotting against Sarafina. And then one night he watches as Sarafina is turned into a vampire... his vision ends and he eventually escapes from his captors and returns to America a hero as he hadn't given away anything under torture.

But Willem can't quite settle back into his normal life - partly because his foot is seriously injured but mostly because he wants to know what happened to Sarafina in his dreams and isn't able to get back to them. And then he manages, with a lot of pain, to revisit her and finds that a great deal of time has past and she is now a vampire. When Willem bumps into a vampire in a hospital one evening he starts to wonder if his dreams might have some basis in reality.

All this that I have given as an introduction takes place in the first half of the book and from that point onward the story rather changes. We are introduced to new characters that Willem is hired to protect, he runs into Sarafina who's somewhat different from the young gypsy girl he knew and some vampire hunters manage to kidnap a very important girl. Can she be rescued, and why has she been kidnapped? Perhaps Willem can help with some of these problems.

The romance between Willem and Sarafina isn't actually all that significant a part of the story - in fact, I didn't find it romantic at all. Rather the opposite. There was much more interest in the relationship between some of the vampires in this story - a family relationship rather than a romantic one. The world that Maggie Shayne has built (where vampires can communicate by telepathy and can addict humans to their blood) is nothing new and I felt that the story never really got going. The preamble of Sarafina's life as a gypsy was too long and the rest of the story felt rushed. The ending also left rather a lot of open threads (although I can guess a couple) but I didn't find the book enough of a draw to find the next one and see how it continued. It's not a badly written story (the information about Willem's time as a prisoner and how he deals with that, and the subsequent fame, was very good) but for a romantic book this one fell rather short of the mark for me.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-02-18

I wasn't so sure I was going to like Sarafina in this--but the story was great and the characters very enjoyable!

4 out of 5 stars Against all odds romance..........2005-07-10

Sarafina is a jaded, lonely woman who also happens to be a vampire. She cares for no one and only surrounds herself with people she can utterly control and who do not touch her heart in any way (this part is very inventive and creepy, very dark).

Willem Stone is a mortal and not one of the chosen. He was hired to follow Amber Lilly ( Also seen in At Twilight, Edge of Twilight) into New York City to ensure her safety "discretly" while she is having a bit of vacation fun. While protecting his charge he finds the woman of his dreams...literally. He dreamed of her while he was a POW during the war in the middle east.

Sarafina knows Willem too. He was her dream angel, the one she loved when others betrayed but he abandoned her...and she is not one to ever allow herself to be hurt.

I loved this book...why? It was finally the darkness I was looking for. If your a fan of Maggie you know that it is fairly light reading --this one had some tortured characters (emotionally and literally too). I applaude this novel.

5 out of 5 stars Another Gold by Maggie.......2004-08-01

The book was once agian very good....I hated 'fina by the end of Twilight hunger but after this book i understood her and apricated her alot more than i did in twilight hunger now that I've learned her past and story its easy to get why she is so cold and what not....the ending wasn't as good as Twilight hunger and kinda left me hanging which was rather dissapointing....and I would've liked to know what happened to Dante and Morgan (Although if you read her other books there are bits and peices of them in there) its a very good book though....Maggie once agian hit gold...

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2004-05-07

This story is unbelievably powerful. Maggie is one of the most talented writters that I have ever read. I couldn't put this book down. It took me from 9:00pm til 4:00am to finish this book. I couldnt stop thinking about this powerful love. I actually dreamed about this story. Read all of her books in the series. Follow the order and it makes everything more clear. I love these books and Maggie for creating them.

    Book Description

Michael Dibdin’s veteran Italian police officer is back. The newest addition to this remarkable series -- consistently galvanizing as much for its revelation of the subtle complexities of Italian life as for its page-turning suspense -- is a novel of long-held secrets set against a sweeping background of political and passionate intrigue.

When a group of Austrian cavers exploring a network of abandoned military tunnels in the Italian Alps comes across human remains at the bottom of a deep shaft, everyone assumes the death was accidental. Until, that is, the still-unidentified body is stolen from the morgue and the Defense Ministry puts a news blackout on the case. And is the recent car bombing in Campione D’Italia, a tiny tax haven surrounded on all sides by Switzerland, somehow related? The whole affair has the whiff of political corruption. That’s enough to interest Aurelio Zen’s boss at the Interior Ministry, who wants to know who is hiding what from whom, and why.

The search for the truth leads Zen back into the murky history of postwar Italy and the obscure corners of modern-day society to uncover the truth about a crime that everyone thought was as dead and buried as its victim.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the best Dibdin.......2006-02-17

I like this author. This book I don't like or dislike, and that's a problem. It did not make much of an impression. The plot is standard conspiracy stuff, and while there are highly literate moments and great insights, they are fewer than in other books. I think the author is tired. I was, after reading this. Pick up an earlier work to see the heights Dibdin can achieve.

    5 out of 5 stars Dibden's the best.......2005-08-19

I loved all of Dibden's Aurelio Zen books, partly because I love Italy, but mostly because Dibden's style is hypnotic and his characters are much too human.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Zen mysteries.......2005-02-24

Medusa is an excellent addition to the Aurelio Zen mysteries. A faster pace than some of the others but a rich story in this brilliant series that takes us through the heart and soul of Italy. May there be many more to come.

    5 out of 5 stars MEDUSA is a winner!.......2005-02-07

Michael Dibdin's latest Italian mystery featuring Aurelio Zen is superb. This is his 9th in the Zen series and the best since `Dead Lagoon' was published in 1994. In his past Zen thrillers, Dibdin set each novel in a different location in Italy, e.g. Umbria, Sardinia, Venice, Naples, and Sicily, to name a few. Other mystery series writers pick a single location, i.e., Donna Leon sets her Commissario Brunetti series in Venice and Magdalen Nabb's Marshal Guarnaccia series is Florence-based.

Well, MEDUSA is set in six different regions of Northern Italy. The plot centers around a body, buried for thirty years in a cave in the Dolomites; Zen works out of Rome, but lives in Lucca with his ladyfriend, Gemma from the last book; the main characters were associated with the military in the 1970s and now live in Milan, Verona, Campione (near Lugano) and a rural area near Pesaro in the Marche region. Inspector Zen is one busy guy traveling from place to place to solve this one.

Zen works for the Polizia di Stato under the Interior Ministry, who are always in competition with the Carabinieri under the Defence Ministry. Dibdin does a great job of setting up this adversary situation to its fullest. Zen is trying to solve the mystery while the Carabinieri is trying to bury the facts from becoming public. This novel is very contemporary with many barbs directed toward Silvio Berlusconi and his current government. The plot is fast-moving and intriguing. In this one, Zen is all business and at his best, with his personal life taking a backseat, for a change.

4 out of 5 stars Quality novel, a pleasure to read.......2004-08-30

This is a quality novel, the first book of Michael Dibdin that I read. The plot is credible, well developed and comes down to an enjoyable ending. Better style and content than what we are used to getting from a lot of popular American authors (John Grisham, Harlan Coben, etc.). A minor point is that the link between chapters is sometimes a bit hard to catch, especially if you read the book over a longer course of time. I'll certainly read more of Michael Dibdin.

Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's regal vampire Ragoczy, the Count Saint-Germain, crushes our perceptions of the stereotypical bloodsucking, murderous vampire. Unlike his undead brethren Dracula and Lestat, Saint-Germain values life, and he is the very paradigm of humanity and tenderness.

In his long and sometimes overwhelmingly lonely life, Ragoczy has lived through France's 14th-century Black Plague (Blood Roses), Ivan the Terrible's bloody reign (Darker Jewels), and the First World War (Writ in Blood). In Communion Blood, Count Saint-Germain travels from Transylvania to Rome to help out a distressed friend. It is the 17th century, a time when the pope had absolute power, and his "Little House," (The Inquisition), was a law unto itself. A vampire would be viewed as the ultimate heretic, but Saint-Germain puts his own fears aside as he offers legal advice and support to his good friend and fellow undead Niklos Aulirios, who is involved in a bitter legal dispute.

For over 1,300 years, Niklos was the faithful manservant of Olivia Clemens, until she died the True Death. Although she bequeathed everything to Niklos in her will, a young German, Ahrent Julius Rothofen, has challenged the will. He claims to be a relative of Olivia's late husband, but the vampires know this "husband" was purely fictitious. Rothofen also happens to be part of Archbishop Siegfried Walmund's entourage, a powerful allegiance of men who use the church to further their political ambitions and personal wealth. These are not men to vex, particularly if one happens to be a vampire.

As she has done so well throughout her series, Yarbro weaves Saint-Germain's personal dramas into a larger historical picture. We learn much about the complicated politics and religious divisions of 17th-century Europe, and we are treated to a fascinating snapshot of the music, arts, and fashions of the era. This is all laced with enough horror, supernatural intrigue, and erotic vampire sex to remind us that Saint-Germain, despite his humanity, is really not of the natural world. --Naomi Gesinger

      Book Description

Olivia Atta Clemens, Saint-Germain's love from the days of Imperial Rome, has died the True Death and left her lavish estates to her servant, Niklos Aurilios, but they have been claimed by a young noble who says he is the long-lost son of Olivia's dead husband.Saint-Germain may not be able to convince a court of Niklos's rights without revealing Olivia's true nature, and therefore, his own.

The Count Saint Germain must help an old friend, Olivia Clemens. She
was also a vampire, but has now given up the ghost and is truly dead.
Being wealthy, she had a reasonable estate, and has left it to her
servant. However, the ever greedy Catholic Church would really like the
land, and are not above being ruthless bastiches to get it.

Here, the Count will try and help.

3 out of 5 stars Yarbro Repeats Her Plots.......2007-07-13

New setting, late seventeenth-century Italy, same plot you've been through before, Germain saving a damsel in distress. Read Yarbro for her minutely researched historical stories, but don't expect she'll ever do anything new or different with her main characters, because as I've come to accept, apparently she never will.

      And that's a pity.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Experience.......2005-05-30

The book arrived two days after I ordered it and it was in mint condition. Highly recommended Seller.

3 out of 5 stars Twelfth in the Saint-Germain series........2003-07-12

Or thirteenth, if you count "Out of the House of Life", which is primarily a spinoff novel about Madeline de Montalia (former lover and vampiric "childe" of Saint-Germain), but which does include some flashback scenes to some of Saint-Germain's early history.

Or sixteenth, if you also count "A Flame in Byzantium", "Crusader's Torch", and "A Candle For d'Artagnan", the spinoff series about Atta Olivia Clemens, an earlier vampiric "childe". This book is, after a fashion, a sequel to "A Candle for d'Artagnan".

The book is set in seventeenth century Rome, 30 years after Olivia's death, and somewhat more than that after "Mansions of Darkness". The plot and historical settings were interesting enough, if not Yarbro's best; the love interest, for a change, was neither traumatized, killed, nor psychotic, and even the secondary female character, who WAS traumatized and a bit difficult, was at least not completely psychotic. It was interesting to see, for a change, that the diligence of the church investigators actually worked to Saint-Germain's advantage.

The only real problem with this book was that the writing was inexcusably sloppy. I've long since accepted the fact that there are going to be errors in any mass-market paperback, and in spite of the fact that we pay "quality paperback" prices for the current run of Saint-Germain books, they are basically mass-market paperbacks in Sunday-Go-To-Meeting clothes. And Yarbro has always tended to be a tad on the sloppy side about her proofreading, but I can accept a typo or three per book without getting all worked up over it. But if there aren't two dozen sloppy errors in this book (including one in which she misspells her own main character's name, as "Saint-German") (bottom line of page 363) I'll be astonished. Errors that an author of Ms. Yarbro's reputation shouldn't be making; things like "The courts have long preferred the claims of relatives over that of servants..." and "The worker have left for the night" and "there had been stalls for nearly a hundred horses here, and was thought a smallish enterprise" and "Now there were stall for twenty" (those last two being back-to-back) and "A few worldly slights such as mine must be seem more amusing than dangerous". This is far from a comprehensive list; these were all before page 75, and the frequency did NOT lessen as the book progressed.

Get this woman an editor who isn't willing to rubber-stamp everything she writes because of her reputation. Someone capable of attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars darkness that is not so dark.......2001-08-21

I have followed Saint-Germain now for over 15 years. I fell in love with the vampire and the historical settings and people that Yarbro placed her vampire in and around. For a while there Saint-Germain was silent, and when the novels once again started coming forth, I was extremely happy. Unfortunately, the stories and situations that were written about were so extremely dark and depressing that it still takes me a long time to build up the courage to begin a new Saint-Germain book. I am very happy to say that Communion Blood and Blood Roses were extremely wonderful to read. Not that there wasn't darkness because there is in abundance especially where the Roman Catholic Church touches. However, there is a great deal of hope that shines through in Saint-Germain and those that touch his life which was very unlike what was portrayed in Mansions of Darkness, Better in the Dark, or even Tempting Fate. I would highly recommend this book not only for the historical accuracy and removed-blinders look at the power that the Roman Catholic Church wielded, but for a real glimpse of why Saint-Germain still remains even more human than many of us today.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2002-12-02

If you have found Understanding Computers and Cognition by Dr Fernando Flores or the Tree of knowledge from Dr Humberto Maturana difficult to understand, this book is for you. Dr Budd does an excellent job of articulating some of the world's greatest thinkers of our time in an easy to read format. I have been studying this work for 15 years and think that this is an excellent primer. The fact that he relates it to solving health problems such as headaches, jaw and neck pain, insomnia, stomach and bowel problems, lack of energy, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression is a bonus. Our language is inherently related to our health.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful and a very important book........2002-03-14

I wish I had read Dr. Budd's book earlier in my life. I came very close to dying once, lost a kidney, because I trusted the professional opinion of the doctor before I learned to trust my own feelings. Dr. Budd shows us how to have greater awareness and to take greater responsibility in our own healing process. The exercises in the book are important to move you from just reading to experiencing and beginning to change your life. This book should be mandatory reading at every medical school.

      5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2002-01-05

This book will show you how your language reveals the way you see the world and how this either opens or closes possibilities for you to be successful, to love and to be loved. This book can change your life, if you read it, do the practices and watch your language.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this book.......2001-12-12

A lot of psycho-babble in a rather boring book. Dr. Budd summarizes work from others that he is impressed with. If you must read it, find a copy in your local library....it's not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars If I Could Only Have One Reference Book On This Subject..........2000-08-23

...This Would Be It! Colonel Allen's enthusiasm for the subject led him to produce what is probably the definitive work in the field of collecting cookbooks. This book sweeps up both the new and the experienced collector into the fascinating world of vintage cookbooks and their value as a source of historical information. The only drawback I found was the grouping of books in categories for the price guide section, as I found myself thumbing through many places to locate a particular cookbook. However, it contains an exhaustive listing, and once you get used to it, the layout is only a minor annoyance. Along with Dickinson's and Barile's books on the subject, it is fast becoming dog-eared from daily use!

As an owner of over 100 handbags, I was very disappointed with this book. Despite its' beautiful cover, most of the bags are very ordinary and many of the most important handbag designers of the last 200 years are overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended for any collection strong in both fashion history and books on collectibles.......2006-05-27

Eye-catching from the start, HANDBAG CHIC: 200 YEARS OF DESIGNER FASHION features a good chain on the side to provide the illusion of a handbag book: open it up and you'll find the eye-catching strategy continues with full-page color photos of handbags which are unique creations indeed. Descriptions beside each photo include maker, year, materials used, and the latest price. 2 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BAG BOOK-GOOD PICTURES-BAD PRICE GUIDE!.......2005-11-20

I am really amazed - UPSET AND MISTIFIED at this author and her lack of knowledge on the quality of the VINTAGE-(BACK SECTION OF BOOK) LUCITE~BAKELITE handbags in her book-THE PRICES ARE TOTALLY OUT OF LINE!HIGH ON THE CHEAP-LOW ON THE BEST???
      - She has photographed (I am sure at great expense) many plastic purses - yes plastic - not LUCITE OR BAKELITE...- lower quality , poor quality manufacturers and priced them at astronomically high prices ....and yet the great bags with the top-best quality manufacturer names, are put in the same price catagory , or less, and there are very few unusual shapes, colors and designs that we all seek today. She did not go to the collectors and use their bags so that you can really see what was made back then and why they are so sought after today - justifying the high prices for the unusual colors-stones and shapes made. The cost of this book is not the problem , if you want a fancy coffee table book - - the information is.It lacks more in depth information on the history of his kind of bag.

The best book out there is the Kate Donner book - but don't waste your money on the new one if you have the old one - it is also the same pictures - but again, the prices are out of line and totally not within todays going numbers. If you want a book for pictures buy Donners book - this one is a total waste of money - maybe for the soft cover, but don't buy this hard cover book unless you want a coffee table book.

      5 out of 5 stars Handbag Chic.......2005-10-28

HANDBAG CHIC is a wonderful book! It is very informative with many high quality purses ranging from a rare, early Theorem purse to beautiful 20th century needle worked and leather examples. The circa 1840 painted straw purse had me green with envy. The cover is imaginatively designed as a purse, complete with a chain handle on the spine! The photography is of a very high quality, making details easy to see. I consider this a great addition to my collection of books on purses and a must have for purse and couture collectors everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PHOTOS AND A VERY INFORMATIVE, GORGEOUS BOOK!.......2005-10-28

As an avid antique purse collector, I am always looking to learn more about my passionate hobby. Desire successfully expanded my knowledge by providing me with a wide range of information that I had previously been unaware of. Her Glossary taught me so much I did not already know. I love the fact that her book spanned from the very early year 1759 to the present. This is a very comprehensive book with so many gorgeous pictures. If you are a handbag lover, you should not miss owning this gorgeous book!

              Book Description

Ria Mooney was a pioneer in the theatre, the first woman to serve as the resident producer of the National Theatre of Ireland (popularly referred to as The Abbey) between 1948 and 1963. She distinguished herself as an actress and director of some of the most important playwrights and performers of her time, and received excellent reviews for her work. But after leaving the Abbey, she has, for the most part, been overlooked in theatrical histories.

In this work, Ria Mooney receives the notice she deserves as one of Ireland's most significant theatrical artists of the twentieth century. Her entire theatrical career is covered and special attention is paid to her work as actress and as resident producer at the Abbey. The author explains how Mooney assembled and nurtured her acting company and worked with the playwrights whose plays she mounted at the Abbey and the Queen's playhouses.

A picture is created of the swiftly changing theatrical, cultural, political, and social climate of Dublin during her tenure at the Abbey. Her importance to Irish theatre is summarized, and her career is evaluated in light of reviews of her work and the work of those she directed.

              5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2003-07-09

Not only is this a wonderful biography of a great actress/producer/director/teacher - but a lovely insight into Dublin during her life.

There is a protrait of Ria (in costume) that hung in the theatre bar. It was presented to the theatre by former Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Charles Haughey - where is it now ?

5 out of 5 stars Ode to a Neglected Theatrical Giant.......2002-06-30

McGlone writes a compelling and truly enjoyable story about one the most influential figures of Irish theatre in the 20th century. Why, one wonders, does it take a college professor from New Jersey to singularly herald this theatrical giant who alone held together the Irish national theatre during its most perilous time? Her personal and professional history spans from O'Casey to Friel, and, as a woman in 1950's Ireland, forged the greatest acting company the Abbey has ever known - yet her picture does not hang in the National Theatre's lobby alongside the other Abbey legends (Yeats, Synge, etc.). McGlone writes a must-read for anyone who's a student of Irish theatrical history, and sends a blaring wake-up call for the current Irish theatrical establishment to arise and start discussing this great woman's prodigious artistic output and impact, and, ultimately, to restore the plays initially produced under her tenure back on today's Abbey stage.
