Book Description
On a deserted mountain road in the Dominican Republic in 1960, three young women from a pious Catholic family were assassinated after visiting their husbands who had been jailed as suspected rebel leaders. The Mirabal sisters, thus martyred, became mythical figures in their country, where they are known as Las Mariposas (the butterflies). Three decades later, Julia Alvarez, daughter of the Dominican Republic and author of the acclaimed How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, brings the Mirabal sisters back to life in this extraordinary novel. Each of the sisters speaks in her own voice, beginning as young girls in the 1940s, their stories vary from hair ribbons to gun-running to prison torture. Their story is framed by their surviving sister who tells her own tale of suffering and dedication to the memory of Las Mariposas. This inspired portrait of four women is a haunting statement about the human cost of political oppression, and is destined to take its place alongside Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Allende's The House of the Spirits as one of the great 20th-century Latin American novels.

Historia dominicana.......2007-02-01

Book Description
From bestselling author James Grippando comes the newest Jack Swyteck thriller, in a series that critics have called "riveting," "a winner," and "lapel grabbing." In Got the Look, Swyteck is up against a killer who's so fiendishly clever and diabolical that even Jack may have at last met his match.
FBI agent Andie Henning is tracking a ruthless kidnapper plaguing south Florida, one who's out to prove that all human life can be valued in dollars and cents. But at every turn, he has slipped through her net. This time he's taken the wife of one of the state's richest horse breeders and is asking a ransom of $1 million. The stakes go up when Andie finds the woman -- dead.
Enter Jack Swyteck. He has a new girlfriend, Mia, and life is good -- until she goes missing. Then Jack gets a one-two punch: he discovers that his lover is married, and her rich husband gets a ransom demand that pegs Mia as the kidnapper's latest victim. Worst of all, her husband knows all about her affair with Jack, and he decides to pay the kidnapper exactly what his cheating wife is worth: nothing. Feeling deceived, Jack at first resists getting involved. But as secrets about Mia's strange marriage and mysterious past unfold, Jack is in for a twisty ride that may bring him face-to-face with a madman.

Worth a Listen!.......2007-05-16
Got the Look is the fifth installment in the Jack Swyteck series by thriller/mystery author James Grippando. This book delivers suspense and thrills as Swyteck hunts down a kidnapper who stashes his victims alive in underwater caves throughout Southern Florida.
Swyteck's girlfriend Mia becomes the latest victim of the story's villain. It is only through her disappearance that Jack learns that Mia is married - to a millionaire, and that like the other kidnappings this one is motivated by money. Having learned of the affair, Mia's husband refuses to pay the ransom and Jack is forced to find the killer, or lose the woman he has conflicted affections for. While this romance plays a central part in the novel, it isn't distracting. So many affairs seem forced, and thrown into thrillers and mysteries just for the sake of including a bit of romance. But Jack's relationship with Mia works - a testimony to Grippando's ability to weave an entirely engaging story without resorting to stock plots or disconnected sex scenes.
Got the Look is an audiobook that you won't want to turn off. Reader Jonathon Davis does a great job portraying the book's diverse characters.

James Grippando is always top notch.......2006-08-02
I have never been disappointed in a book by James Grippando. His writing is excellent. When I finish reading, I donate the book to the library and they are always thrilled to get a book authored by him.
A SERIAL KIDNAPPER ON THE LOOSE.......2006-02-04
Gifted with a strong, hard to ignore voice, performer Jonathan Davis breathes life into uber attorney Jack Swyteck as his narration bounces from humor to dead-on earnest with ease. Swyteck's buddy, Theo, also benefits from the interpretation by Davis as Theo tweaks his pal for being crazy in love or comes face to face with the danger they're in.
In this, the fifth Jack Swyteck novel, we find ourselves once again in South Florida.where Andie Henning, an FBI agent, is desperately trying to reel in a vicious kidnapper. The grabber is bold enough to kidnap the wife of a wealthy horse breeder - little sense in coming up with ransom as the woman is soon dead.
Time for Swyteck to be on the scene. Tracking a serial kidnapper isn't his prime concern at the moment - that position is reserved for Mia Salazar, who has captured his heart and mind. But, when Mia is kidnaped the heat is on.
Unfortunately, Swyteck is in for a bit of a jolt when he finds out that his one-and-only isn't. She's married to a very rich man who is not interested in ponying up for a wife who has been playing around with Swyteck. Nonetheless, trick or not Swyteck doesn't want to see Mia dead so he teams with Andie to track the crazy kidnaper.
The scenes that take place while Mia is being held captive are especially chilling, and Grippando paints them well.

Page-Turning Thriller.......2007-07-09
This is a riveting page-turner with lots of twists, great dialogue, and some excellent action pieces. The Jack Swyteck series is an underrated one, but one that usually delivers solid entertainment, just like this entry does.
Suffice it to say that like all thrillers, there are a few too many coincidences to believe, but that is a common fault of the genre.
Recommended.
not the best Swyteck book.......2007-05-12
This is not the best "Jack Swyteck" book I have read, and I have read them all. BUt I would definitely give it a read, although it is a bit slow at times, it does end with a bang. If you like Grippando's writing you will still like this book.
5 stars.......2007-03-02
Hot shot Miami attorney, Jack Swyteck, is stunned when he discovers that his latest girlfriend, Mia, has not been honest with him. Not only has she been vague about her past, but she is also married. And when she is kidnapped and her wealthy husband decides that his unfaithful wife is worth nothing the kidnapper requests Jack to pay the ransom. Jack is not one to sit still and take orders from the FBI, and so he takes matters into his own hands as Mia's fate rests on his head. In a race against time and the kidnapper's demand to pay what she is worth, Jack uncovers Mia's secret past as he tries to negotiate with a kidnapper who killed his previous victim when he was not paid what she was worth.
***** Awesome read with nonstop action and suspense from the first page to the last! James Grippando has created a cast of interesting characters in this book and there is never a dull moment. Got the Look has got me hooked. I cannot wait to read the rest of Grippando's Jack Swyteck stories. *****

Loki's Story.......2000-08-20
You'd think the Norse legends, as full of grand and familiar stories as they are, would be just about mined out by now. Storytellers know better. The fact is that there are more than two sides to every story; sometimes as many as there are viewpoint characters to tell them. Lois Tilton picks a different point of view for her book.
WRITTEN IN VENOM is Loki's story, and naturally he doesn't see things quite the way that Odin and the skalds do. Yet this is no mere modernist retooling of the Norse Mythos; the dark brooding nature of the legends remain intact and, if anything, intensified. You'll find it all here: Idunn and the Golden Apples, Sif's Golden Hair, how Odin got his eight-legged horse and how Thor got his wonderful magic hammer, the Death of Baldr, all told from the reviled Loki's perspective. The gods don't come off quite so brave and noble as they do in the conventional form of the legends, but that's to be expected. Everyone is the hero of their own story, and Loki is no exception. A story retold is a story made new, and Lois Tilton does a fine job of bringing the Trickster God's version to life.
Loki Sets the Record Straight.......2000-08-15
_Written in Venom_ is a retelling of the cycle of Norse myths from the viewpoint of Loki. This angle on the stories is refreshing, indeed bracing, and in particular it brings the character of Loki into full view: sometimes to his advantage, sometimes (in biter bit fashion, and whether or not Loki seems to know it) to his disadvantage. It also emphasizes the bitter side of the cycle, the way in which the myths emphasize resignation to certain death and failure, and the way in which all the characters are deeply flawed.
At the same time the book is thoroughly entertaining and fun to read. It's told in shortish chapters, generally one "story" per chapter. Thus we hear of Loki's birth and youth, his meeting with the deceitful Odinn, and then the later part of the cycle, such stories as Odinn's losing his eye, and his trip to Niflheim, and the dwarves being tricked into creating Thorr's hammer and many other wonderful devices; even a bit of the Ring cycle. Eventually, of course, we come to the killing of Baldr, and the subsequent inevitable fall of Asgard.
Among the refreshing aspects of Loki's viewpoint is his cynical view of Baldr, so often regarded as a golden hero; and also Loki's claims for true familial love with his wife Sigyn and his two sons. Loki's voice comes through clearly, and the stories are by turns cynical, broadly humourous, clever, and very lusty. A fine book, and worth reading on its own terms, simply as a fantasy novel; or as an adult introduction to the Norse myths; or as a modern reinterpretation of the familiar stories.
A Little Perspective.......2000-06-26
One of the tried and true ways of generating a novel is to take a well known story and simply look at it from a different point of view. IN WRITTEN IN VENOM Lois Tilton has chosen the entire Norse mythos as her playground and the results are first rate.
It is Loki's story that Tilton has chosen to tell. Loki the reviled Trickster, Loki the Troublemaker. But not, as the author says herself, "the way the skalds sing it." Naturally Loki has quite a different version of events as they unfold, from Sif's Hair to Idunn's Apples to Thor's violent(and often comic) adventures against the giants. This is, however, no modernist retelling of classic fable; Tilton keeps the dark brooding nature of the Norse myths very much intact, just told from a different perspective. Those already familiar with the Norse myths will appreciate Tilton's slant; those just discovering them will find very little missing. As the storytellers have long known, a tale properly retold is a story made new again, and a story lasts only so long as there are new voices to carry it on. One particular story cycle has been well served in WRITTEN IN VENOM, and the reader will be too.

Simple Solution for Asthma Sufferers.......2007-09-28
I was skeptical about changing the way I manage my asthma and have for the past 25 years. Deep down I always lived with the fear that I would have to be dependent on asthma meds for the rest of my life. I enjoy an active lifestyle with asthma but always kept the rescue inhaler nearby when engaging in physical activity. After reading Patrick McKeown's book - my life has completely changed. Mr. McKeown's book outlines a simple yet VERY EFFECTIVE method to change your breathing habits and live more peacefully with asthma. I have experienced a tremendous increase in my quality of life by adopting these principles. The method outlined is simple, easy and the progress chart keeps up the enthusiasm. Although this method works VERY VERY Effectively - the widespread use is limited because it is non-pharmacological. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for anyone who may suffer from breathing related health challenges and especially for anyone who suffers from asthma!
Asthma? Allergies? READ THIS BOOK!.......2007-08-09
I've had allergies all of my life and first experienced allergy induced asthma about 10 years ago. This book has changed my life!! I rarely use an inhaler and allergy medicine anymore after everyday use!! I highly recomend this!! Jackie from Jersey
Revolutionary theory, best book on the subject.......2007-07-12
I think it should be a "Bible" for any asthmatic and a necessary book to read for everyone. My only regret is that I didn't come across it 5 years ago when I first developed asthma. It could save me few trips to ER and a lot of miserable hours spent dealing with my illness. Thing that most upsets me now is that it is not so widely known, and I could have suffered all my life without knowing about it and believing doctors who say it is incurable. I could be completely dependent on medication and watching my health go downhill. This book is very well written. It answers all the questions I've constantly tried to search answers for during my illness. It is a huge eye opener and most importantly - great scientific discovery that definitely helps to overcome asthma and other chronic health conditions.
Sometimes the Simplest Things are the Most Powerful........2006-11-06
Forest fire smoke came rolling into the Las Vegas Valley back in July and suddenly my lungs weren't working despite having no history of breathing problems. In fact I used to be about the healthiest person I know! Diagnosis? Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome (RADS), which is similar to asthma (chronic chest tightness, shortness of breath, worsened by exercise and bad air quality) but it does not respond to asthma medication and I refused to take a course of steroids.
I'd been following the supplement program as outlined in "Reversing Asthma: Breathe Easier with This Revolutionary New Program" by Richard Firshein, DO, but my condition had not measuraby improved. After 4 months I started to feel a bit hopeless.
I had to wait almost 4 weeks for this book to arrive, it's not very popular in the US, but it was worth the wait. After only 10 days of doing the Buteyko exercises outlined in this book I was able to resume exercising and now have moments when I have no discomfort at all!
Private lessons for the Buteyko method are about $400. Videos run $100 or more. This little $16 book might not be as thorough as those options for learning the Buteyko method (or maybe it is!) but I've learned enough to be able to markedly improve my condition in less than two weeks. I still can't believe what a difference it has made, and in so short a time. And I'm going to keep doing the exercises until I'm fully recovered and my control pause is at least 40 seconds (it's already gone from 10 to 20)!
I now have hope for a full recovery from my condition thanks to Patrick McKeown.
Finally an Offensive Thinker in the Game Against Asthma.......2006-08-18
Can you answer the following:
Why do I continue to need my inhaler after 1, 5, 15 years?
Why do my airways constrict?
How could I begin to change the physiology of my body to live with asthma better?
If you are willing to take the chance, get this book and read it, think about it, and do the exercises. Just by concentrating on nose breathing and keeping my mouth closed 24 hours a day, I have begun to concentrate less on how much air I take in and instead on how I should decrease the amount and let my nose do its job. More MD's should be trained in the Buteyko method. What do they have to lose?

This book is TINY with hardly any recipe photos.......2006-12-28
I didn't realize when I ordered it but this book is only 4" wide (6" tall) - the size of a photograph! It's really small. Also, I was under the impression it would have photos of the recipes (I like to know what it's supposed to look like when it's done) but of the 42 recipes, only 7 have pictures. Even the recipes are "small". For example, this is one recipe in the book:
(Lists 5 ingredients, one of which is water, then...)
"Mix ingredients together until smooth. Pour into greased 9x13 inch pan. Bake at 350 for 1 hour."
That's it! That's the entire page! And most pages are like that.
There are other books with the same recipes so I wouldn't recommend buying this book.

A great reference book for the whole family........2006-01-24
I recieved this book as a gift from the author herself and, despite it being a sort of reference book, I enjoyed it a lot. It was informative without being boring or anything. The illustrations are cute too. If you or a family member is experiencing the hardships of dealing with an organ transplant, this book is great. A+++
Wish I saw this sooner..........2005-06-02
My grandpa had a transplant a few years ago, and my mom was a total wreck! I wish she saw this book earlier. I checked it out from my library, and now I'm going to buy it for her as a present. (The artwork is cool!)

Anyone who knows someone going through or is the person going through a transplant should read this book. Personal stories are everywhere throughout the text. Tips about insurance, location, hopes, fears, what to expect, what wasn't expected, and a whole lot more. Questions to ask and who to ask, as well as questions you don't want to ask but will feel better knowing those thoughts running through your head aren't only your's. All the important authorities to know are contributors to this text. There are even movie suggestions while you are waiting, and waiting, and ......

Book Description
When organ transplantation is discussed, the focus is overwhelmingly placed on the life saving aspect of the operation. However, organ transplantation "is never just about life; it is also about death." The vast majority of transplanted organs come from individuals who have been declared, by legal and medical definitions, to be brain dead. Loved ones of these newly deceased are faced with unique problems and choices. Based on 15 years of experience working with organ procurement organizations and donor families, Wrapped in Mourning addresses the heretofore unexplored subject of organ donor family trauma.
This book covers the issues surrounding organ donation, including the history of organ transplantation, how organs are procured for transplantation, as well as the medical procedure itself. Each issue is explored with regards to its impact upon donor families. Ways to reduce grief, prevent problems, and increase the benefits of donating organs for the donating family are discussed.
Holtkamp demonstrates a rich understanding of donor family trauma, and Wrapped in Mourning is peppered with case studies and real-life scenarios that shed light on both sides of the "life-giving, death-ridden phenomenon of organ donation."
