Book Description
Welcome to the Triangle, where wereleopards romp, the dead talk back, and blood-thirsty predators stalk through the city's darkest hours.
But when the doors open at Forever Crossed, the only funeral home in the Carolinas with an anti-rising guarantee, Olivia Peters is ready for anything the night may bring. At least she thinks she is. Between dating the wereleopard's Ra'Jahn and working for the city's Undead Ruler, her world is a whole lot more dangerous than it used to be.
And to top it all off, the wereleopards believe that she's the Shaman of their prophesies, a being who is neither human nor wereleopard but something else, something entirely new. Olivia denies this connection, but she can't deny the claim their leader is making on her heart...

Needs a bit more..........2007-01-12
Having never heard of this author the background of the story is what pulled me in. I read the book in one sitting, and half way through it, all I kept thinking was "Wow, this is a complete and total rip off of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series!" with very few exceptions. Granted I'm a fan of LKH, but I enjoyed this book as well mostly because the author doesn't delve into...shall we say the porno realm that LKH is now mired in?
Worth the read and very enjoyable, but you'll be able to tie everything to Anita Blake if you've read that series.
A great new strong female character.......2006-10-06
Olivia Peters is a great new female character. Yes, she is reminiscent of Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake character, but that is why I loved this book. Actually, I liked the character Olivia better. She has a more human and vulnerable side that the Anita Blake character does not. Also, unlike the later Anita Blake books that have moved into soft porn, this book had enough sex to keep it interesting but did not take over the story line. I hope it stays that way. However, there were enough good looking male characters to make the read more enjoyable. I prefer a book with good characters, lots of action and a great plot. This had all of that. A wonderful new author!
It kept reminding me of...........2006-06-17
When I got this book I thought that I would be experiencing a new, hot author; however with ever page that I turned I kept getting flashbacks of Laurell K. Hamilton. If you are an avid Hamilton fan, stay away from this one, I think that you will be disappointed, if you have never read her work, you will probably enjoy this book. It could be a good way to warm up to the Anita Blake series.
A Good beginning..........2006-03-25
As has been mentioned, the world of Olivia Peters, a Bereavement Couselor who communicates with the dead, bears a striking resemblance to that of Anita Blake, and the writing lacks the professional polish of a Laurell Hamilton or Kim Harrison. There are, however, enough original elements to keep the book from being too derivative, and the ending leaves you wanting to know what happens to the characters in the future, always the sign of an enjoyable read. For those of us who miss the early Anita books, with their emphasis on plot rather than sex, this book is a welcome find. Hopefully, this author will continue to grow and develop as will the world she has created, leaving the spectre of Anita behind.
Likeable alternative heroine.......2006-02-08
I have to agree that this book was a little treasure. Olivia Peters might not be as smart or as layered of a heroine as Laurell Hamilton's, but I enjoyed her, from the beginning of the book to its end. Part of the problem sci-fi writers can have is creating characters who are so alternative that it's hard to keep a sense of their humanity; they just become too unlikeable or alien. Not so with Olivia Peters. The author could use some seasoning to make it into mainstream markets, but I have the feeling that that will happen, if she just writes more. So, where's the sequel?

LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW
"No one knows better than Mary Higgins Clark how to turn fear into great entertainment... She is a true national treasure."
ASSOCIATED PRESS
"The six stories in The Lottery Winner are gems.... In addition to Clark's tight, wonderfully suspenseful plots, the reader simply enjoys being with Alvirah and Willie... Clark has always been a great author with whom to spend an afternoon or evening, and her latest book holds true to form."
BATON ROUGE ADVOCATE
"Clark's book is fun because perhaps everyone has dreamed of winning the lottery, and the two protagonists of these stories couldn't be more deserving... Alvirah also has turned into a brilliant sleuth... Best of all, we get to play You Be the Detective with the unflappable Alvirah... Let's hear it for Mary Higgins Clark."

I love Alvirah and Willy!.......2007-05-13
These books may not be as deep as others that Clark has written, but they are delightful and I hope there will be many more.
A real winner!.......2007-03-29
When I originally started out with this book a few years back, I was not to happy to be reading it. I was assigned to do a book report and I am not a huge fan of books. I do however, enjoy mysteries and I knew that if I could find the write type of author, I might be able to come out of this assignment alive! So with a little research I stumble upon this book while I was with my ex-roomy at a half price book store. The short description of the book interested me so much that I took a chance and purchased it.
Need I tell you, that I enjoyed the book so much that it took me less then a week to finish it! In fact, I would usually stay up longer then I needed to at night just to finish the chapter I was on, then forget that I promised myself I would quit, and go onto the next part. Yes folks, it's that good of a book! I had a field day with Clark's characters and I managed to write an Ace book report and find a new person that actually got me interested in reading for fun.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a light and interesting read. I have since moved on to other books by Clark and all of them are just as good as the next. If you get a chance, check out more of her work and you will not be disappointed!
As Always MHC Really Delivers.......2007-01-28
This is a book of short stories based on the characters of Alvirah and Willy. In the book that originally contained these characters, Ms. Clark planned to kill Alvirah off. She was urged not too and Alvirah and Willy have since shown up in other novels. Alvirah was a cleaning lady and Willy was a plumber when they won the lottery. These stories are a lot of fun to read.
Alvirah no longer cleans for a living, but has become somewhat of an amateur detective. She wears a sunburst pin which is actually a tiny recorder and she writes articles about her adventures for a newspaper. She's always finding herself in precarious predicaments needing to be rescued, though in at least one of the stories the person in need of rescue is Willy. They love to travel and are always willing to help a friend in need, especially if that friend is accused of murder. These are easy to read stories that keep your attention. I really enjoyed this book.
The Lottery Winner by Mary Higgins Clark.......2005-01-13
The Lottery Winner, by Mary Higgins Clark, is series of short stories about a couple the recently had won a forty million dollar lottery. Alvirah and Willy were the lucky couple. With their newfound money they take exotic trips and develop many friendships. Along with these trips Alvirah almost always stumbles upon a mystery, and always saves the day. In the Lottery Winner Mary Higgins Clark develops the two main characters superbly and in each of the short stories does an equally awesome job developing them. I really enjoyed her style of writing. Her fluency in switching viewpoints between the characters is phenomenal. Although this style of writing can be confusing, it keeps you guessing who did it.
4 Millions dollars!.......2003-04-05
A Review by Holli
Alvirah and her husband Will never really had the best life they didn't have very much money but they always seemed to manage. Alvirah always had high spirits she even got excited when they got one number on their lottery tickets to match. But the one that would change their life was they winning ticket they won four million dollars. So their life style changed to a very ritzy life in a hurry but they always kept their poorer roots with them. They moved near high powered people and celebrities. Alvirah also was on the Donahue show she works her dream job and her dream life.
Three things that I liked and didn't like about this book was the beginning it really doesn't grab you like most of her books do. It seems to drag on for a while just describing their life style what they look like and what they do and have done. I think that she would have put it in the middle to so you find out more and more as you go along. Then in the middle when it finally gets going it almost seems to go really fast and just zoom by you before you realized what happened. I liked how descriptive it was though Mary Higgins Clark always seems to have very descriptive books and they seemed to always just grab you from the beginning but this one was lacking that aspect.
This book was a great book overall! I recommend it to people that enjoy mysteries and have just a little patience for slow starting books but also can keep up when it starts moving along fast.

Humorous, witty, and engagingly presented.......2003-12-14
A bizarre and fantastic tale told almost entirely in dialogue, with each corporate lackey player represented as an animal from feline secretary to vulture corporate lawyer, The Corporate Circus by Adela JP offers the reader a genuinely fantastic interplay of office politics and an original "tongue-in-cheek" satire. Humorous, witty, and engagingly presented, The Corporate Circus is highly recommended reading which leaves a marked impression of business that combines the exotic with the all-too-real.
Book Description
A child's personality and self-image are largely shaped by the time he/she is three. Nationally-known author Kyle D. Pruett, M.D. describes the high-speed, fascinating process that transforms an 18-month-old infant with only a budding awareness of self into an independent three-year-old with a clear idea of the person he/she is and wants to be.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging the Toddler's Oral World.......2006-01-21
Before children learn to read, they live in an oral world. Kyle Pruett knows toddlers and he knows they need to interact with grown-ups in a positive way in order to nurture their springboard to later learning and development. Talking to toddlers about the things they are engaged in doing, such as stacking blocks, helps them to talk about their actions. Whereas, playing make-believe helps them to development their language concerning their feelings and emotions. Dr. Pruett doesn't mention that regular exposure to foreign languages that they will later learn is also crucial at this stage (this can be accomplished via audio cassettes and child and parent listen and repeat together).
Nonetheless, there are several things that parents can do to nurture toddlers in this stage: 1) If a child is not talkative, examine whether or not you are stifling in your own talk or see if the child simply cannot talk and do something at the same time; 2) If a child says a word incorrectly, do not constantly correct because it is not "how" the child says it that is as important as "does" the child say it; 3) Engage the toddler in dialogue by sometimes playing interlocuter and mirroring the child's feelings and behavior in words; 4)Share your feelings about things with your child such as "I felt happy to get that letter from Grandma"; 5) Read children's books to your child; and 6) Allow your toddler some quiet time in order to rest and reflect.
In summary, toddlers live in an oral world and require lots of oral interaction with parents and adults who do not engage in "baby talk". The television is a poor surrogate teacher at this stage in your child's development. There is simply no substitute for one-on-one interaction.
OK, but much better books out there.......2001-12-02
Maybe I expect too much out of a book, but in order to get 5 stars out of me a book has to be an exhaustive review of the topic, enlightening or at least entertaining. This book was none of these.
It skims the many facets of raising a toddler, based on all the "current research", but doesn't go further than that. For example, my daughter has recently acquired a fear of the dark. They tell me this is normal. Gee thanks. No review of common fears, no clever ways to handle it, nothing.
It was like getting advice from a pediatrician who didn't go home and parent. Save your money.
High on the Recommended List!.......2000-03-09
This beautifully written book on the critical development of self-esteem through the toddler years will be immeasurably helpful to any parent. If you have ever wondered why your young child does what she does, and whether or not you are responding in the best way, you will find a wealth of information in this book to guide you as you guide your child through the toddler years. Covering everything from brain development to discipline, you will find practical, helpful advice on how to strengthen your child's growth and development. It is thorough in its subject and includes all developmental areas such as language, the importance of play and how children learn from it, striving for independence and how this effects behavior, temperament, role modeling, how family and culture shape values and many other facets of daily growth and development. The key to being a good parent is in understanding why children do the things they do. This book will open your eyes to what is actually going on inside your little one, enabling you to be the most caring and productive guide and teacher you can be for your child. Another score for the Goddard Parenting series of books. Highly recommended! Christina Raley, Managing Editor of A Positive Parenting Website
Me, Myself and I: How Children Build Their Sense of Self.......1999-12-16
This is a superb book. As a teacher, parent and grandparent, I was delighted to discover that an expert of Dr. Pruett's stature has put the emotional well-being of children right where it belongs: at the center of childhood development. Every parent should own this wise and well-written book.
A Bible For Understanding Child Development.......1999-12-09
Me, Myself and I should be required reading for all parents of children ages 18 to 36 months. Dr. Pruett has done an enormous service -- providing insights into temperament, style, communication, playing, and more. Parents shouldn't think twice about getting this book. They and their children will be happier, healthier, and better adjusted than those that decide to take a pass. Dr. Pruett shows parents how parenting can be made a little easier. Bravo to the author!
Book Description
Interest in lounge culture is nearly as high as during the golden age of the '50s and '60s. And even lounge lizards have to eat - and drink. This humorous guide to entertaining, first published in 1950, is a retro period piece that will satisfy the most discriminating tastes, no matter how pickled. Recipes are presented entirely in pictures, step by step, from conception to perfection - and all with deliciously dry wit. Easy-to-make breakfasts-for-two, canapes, barbecue suppers, picnic food, midnight repasts, and, of course, drinks - before-dinner drinks, drinks with dinner, after-dinner drinks, and drinks having nothing to do with meals - are ideal for men with kitchen "no"-how! "When a crowd descends upon you for an evening of bridge or poker, or just for conviviality at your expense, do you know what to serve? Or on a long, hot summer's afternoon, what to quaff? Or on a bleak, black winter's day, what to snift? Read on." - from the book
Customer Reviews:
A Rare Thing- a Cookbook Not Written for Chefs.......2007-07-25
There are several problems with most cookbooks. First, they are written primarily for those already knowledgeable about cooking- neophytes or casual chefs need not apply. Second, they require absurd fractions of ingredients- once one adds one half a can of cream of mushroom soup to a dish, what is one supposed to do with the other half? Third, the recipies are written in densely packed text and with often vague and confusing instructions. A person who goes to a cookbook with the best will in the world will all too often be turned away to flee back into the arms of Swanson TV Dinners, frozen pizzas, and Hamburger Helper.
Wolf in Chef's Clothing is a cookbook for idiots. No, worse than idiots: bachelors. Using simple diagrams and amusing cartoons, supplemented with a bit of humorous writing, the cookbook presents dozens of recipes ranging from breakfast to after-dinner cocktails. The recipes have been greatly simplified- no 1/3 teaspoons or 3/4 cups, no 1/2 cans or 1/4 onions. The resulting dishes, while perhaps not up to the exacting standards of a three-star restaurant, definitely delight the senses. Even the simple hamburger evolves beyond a mere meat patty into a taste delight!
The only flaw in this book is that it's a reprint- it was first published in 1950. Certain social attitudes, especially towards the fair sex (this book was written for single men on the make by a writer for Esquire, remember), are extremely dated. So are a few of the dishes- I for one don't know of ANYONE who puts grape jelly in an "American" omlet! Despite this, the book rises head, shoulders, and bushy tail above the standard run of cookbooks. It's only a shame there aren't more modern cookbooks with the charm and simplicity of this book.
No bachelor pad should be without a copy!
If anything like original, it has to be a hoot.......2001-06-15
I recently acquired an original version of "Wolf in Chef's Clothing" and had to pick myself up off the floor, where I happened to be rolling around in laughter. It's a great concept, and what fun to use!
Sure to enhance any meal time or special celebration event.......2001-03-18
First published in 1950, Robert H. Loeb, Jr.'s Wolf In Chef's Clothing is a unique "picturebook" approach for educating men on how to prepare basic recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight snacks, and barbecues. From omelets to Shrimps Cobra, from canapes to Martini's, the step-by-step picture-based instructions are fool proof and will instruct even the most basic male novice to the mysteries of food and drink preparation. Whether a married man seeking to give his spouse a break in the kitchen, or a bachelor seeking to impress friends and family, Wolf In Chef's Clothing is sure to enhance any meal time or special celebration event.
If the kitchen is "terra incognita", you NEED this book!.......2000-12-10
Yes, this book is a throw-back to the height of the original "lounge culture" era (all the way back in [gasp!] 1950!), but it still holds its own today. The main premise of the book is very simple...
You're a suave man-about-town, you know the difference between a Manhattan and a Martini, and will be entertaining friends, guests, or (especially) that "special someone" you want to be intimate with. Sparkling conversation and chilled beer will only go so far. They have to be fed, and delivered pizza isn't going to cut it! If all you know about the refrigerator is that it keeps beer cold and it's where you stick the leftover Chinese take-out, this book comes to the rescue.
The recipes are so simplified, as a female co-worker friend of mine likes to say, "even a man can do it!" But there are no quarter-teaspoon or third-ounce measurements here. Everything is either full cup, half cup, full tablespoon or half tablespoon. All the ingredients are drawn in easy to understand pictures, and the instructions are in comic strip format. If you can count, you can cook a meal. Guys, this cook book is for us!
If all you've ever made in the kitchen was macaroni and cheese or the occasional sandwich, you're in for a shock as to what you can do! There are ultra-simplified recipes for such dishes as Eggs Demi-Benedict, Sea Food Dorothea, Mignon et Bearnaise, Shrimps Cobra, Lamb Steak Figaro, Welsh Rarebit (spelled here as "Rabbit"), Spaghetti da Vinci, even Duck Vincent.
There are suggestions for breakfast, and even instructions on how to use something called a "vaculator" to make coffee (just in case you have one kicking around the bungalow, or find one at the thrift store).
If breakfast or the main course isn't enough, there's recipes for picnic lunches, cocktail canapes, salads and salad dressings, even four whole chapters dealing with drinks (Before, During and After-Dinner Drinks, and there's even a chapter entitled "Drinks That Have Nothing To Do With Meals").
On the Politically Incorrect side, there are suggested recipies for four different "types" of ladies; the athletic type ("who prefers a game a tennis to a shot of 3-star Henness[ey]"), the indoor type ("soft round and fluffy, who thinks Alexander the Great the best cocktail ever made"), the intellectual type ("more an I.Q. than a Q.T."), and the 3-B type ("brains, bonds and beauty").
The author of this tome was Robert H. Loeb, Jr., food and drink editor for Esquire magazine in the 1950's. The illustrations were by Jim Newhall, an ad agency director from Chicago. The men knew what they were doing. The fact that this book has been brought back in print after 50 years, and without a word or picture changed, holds testament to that! Some of the illustrations are a bit dated (the fashions & quasi-McCarthyesque references to Russia), but that just adds to the book's charm. It was even given a glowing review in the January 2001 edition of Playboy magazine!
After you've tackled this book, you'll be ready for other cookbooks. Yes, guys, there are other ways of getting food on the table than take-out, delivery or TV dinners from the microwave.
Be you lounge culture hipster, frustrated batchelor, or just someone who's sick of eating out a styrofoam clamshell, this book is a worthy purchase! Read it, use it, treasure it! You will not be disappointed.

Blurry Blurbs.......1997-07-14
It's basically a compilation of quotes taken from previous press releases, but it provides a good peek into the psyche of those Blur boys (esp. Damon) on all things Britpop, art, sex, musical ambitions, life. Very witty and humourous; decent photographs
Quite lovely.......1996-12-24
Has gorgeous pics and loads of Damon quotes (plus Graham, Dave,
and Alex ones!). There's even a couple Oasis pics! :) The
quotes are really amusing, interesting, strange, and altogether
Blur. I think you should get this book, whether you want it for
the pics or the text, both are great. :)
