4 out of 5 stars Macalvie joins Jury and Melrose.......2007-07-02

Help the Poor Struggler, by Martha Grimes, is the 6th book in this excellent series. The book introduces us to the moody and blunt Brian Macalvie. Macalvie will become a recurring character in the series, appearing in some of the books to follow. This novel features a mystery involving a serial killer of children in the mysterious Dartmoor (famous for the Sherlock Holmes adventure The Hound of Baskervilles). This is a very strong entry in this compelling series. Macalvie, a local constable, is haunted by a previous case that seems to be related to this series of killings. Jury enlists the aid of Melrose Plant and soon the sleuthing is underway. A really solid read and an important book in the series.

For those of you new to the series, I would recommend reading them in order for the best reading experience; however, they are also fun as stand alone novels.

Here is the series in order:

The Man with a Load of Mischief
The Old Fox Deceived
The Anodyne Necklace
The Dirty Duck
Jerusalem Inn
Help the Poor Struggler
The Deer Leap
I am the only Running Footman
The Five Bells and Bladebone
The Old Silent
The Old Contemptibles
The Horse You Came In on
Rainbow's End
The Case has Altered
The Stargazey
The Lamorna Wink
The Blue Last
The Grave Maurice
The Winds of Change
The Old Wine Shades
Dust

This is an Onyx 2005 reprint of a 1985 novel. It is a little on the dark side, and a change of pace from the author's early novels in the Jury/Plant series. No side excursions into Long Piddleton, or side issues about flashers. Perhaps the author was developing a more serious side. You do need to read some of the earlier novels to understand the Jury and Plant characters.

The story starts with a prelude about a murder where the wrong man is convicted. The only witness, the victim's 5-year old daughter, is left catatonic and unable to point out the killer. The wrong man is convicted of the crime and sent off to prison, simply because he was infatuated with the victim.

Now it is 20 years later. A serial killer is murdering children in the same geographic area as the earlier murder. It appears to be the work of a psychopath. The police are attempting to link the killings and various suspects show up on the scene - the man, just released from prison, who was convicted of the earlier murder; an agoraphobic photographer who seems a bit mysterious; and various relatives who might inherit money if Lady Jessica, a 10-year old heiress, should happen to die.

Events and police work bring the story to some surprising conclusions. The novel is split into 28 chapters.

I am only just discovering Martha Grimes' Richard Jury/Melrose Plant mystery series, having read nine of them this year, so I'm coming late to this 1995 pub. But I have to take a moment and rave about it. The subtle and complex plotting is brilliant, with no unfair disclosures (well, perhaps one little one: how DID "Selfless Sara" manage to get hired into the Ashcroft household?) but lots of delicious twists and turns. Some later titles are loosely written and self-indulgent (she has become too big for an editor to tighten up), but this one is a page-turner throughout. That three seemingly random murders of innocent children are connected, and even tied to the murder of two other girls' mother 20 years earlier? Yes, and you'll be delighted to discover how.

4 out of 5 stars Connecting the dots.......2004-01-05

The tiny hamlet of Clerihew Marsh is the site of the murder of Rose Mulvanney. Her five year old daughter calls the operator to summon assistance. Wiggins and Richard Jury are interested in another matter years later in Dorchester. The victim is Simon Riley, son of a butcher. It is wondered if Davey White in Wynchcoombe is somehow connected to the incident of Simon Riley. The second boy has been placed in a church. His grandfather and guardian is vicar there.

Help the Poor Struggler is, not surprisingly in a book from the Richard Jury series, a pub. Molly Singer wears off the rack Oxfam clothes. She will not speak to the police. The latest victim is Angela Thorne. She is wrapped in a cape belonging to Molly Singer. It seems that Molly Singer is Mary Mulvanney, a daughter of the years-ago murder victim.

It is pleasant to read a Richard Jury mystery because he appears complete with ensemble players. Half-way through this book Melrose Plant turns up at the Jack and Hammer along with the Long Piddleton antiques dealer, Marshall Trueblood. Jessica Ashcroft, a child and Jury's candidate for next victim, is all ready to service Plant's Rolls Royce which fails just outside the wall of the Ashcroft manor house. She claims to know about cars and welcomes him into the premises which is the plan as conceived by Plant and Jury.

Chief Superintendent Racer is concerned over the nonsolution of the cases. As Jury continues his investigation he surmises that the cases are connected since the sites, Princeton, Clerihew Marsh, and Wynchcoombe are equidistant from each other and from Ascroft Manor. Simon's stepmother has an Ashcroft connection it is ascertained. The vicar of Wynchcoombe is related too.

The story is well-plotted. This is a lovely book. The character of the child, Jessica Ashcroft, is just right.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction of Brian Macalvie.......2002-04-14

Brian Macalvie is one of the important supporting characters of Martha Grimes' Richard Jury novels. Macalvie wrestles with some of the same demons Jury does (for instance, an apparent inability to have a satisfying relationship and a dogged need to resolve cases that are rife with complexity). Naturally, the two men initially drive each other rather crazy. Here it is Melrose Plant who is able to be the bridge between them, appreciated by both of them, serving to center and calm both of them.

This is a complicated story about how revenge can become the abiding force in a life, and, conversely, how deciding to care aobut someone else can make even the most damaged person capable of strength and greatness.

                    Book Description

Amy Page, a middle-aged American widow and food columnist from Charleston, South Carolina, is in Paris to write a cookbook. Her lengthy stay in the City of Lights suddenly takes an unexpected turn when a cab driver is murdered in front of her building on the Ile St-Louis.

Jean-Michel Jolivet, Inspector for the French Sûreté and Director of the International Bureau of Security, insists that Amy is essential to solving his ever-widening investigation that now involves several murders and an international plot. While interrogating Amy, Jolivet becomes increasingly annoyed with her incessant ramblings about cookbooks, cuisine, the Ile St-Louis, Paris, French history, culture, and architecture—distracting him from the investigation and from finding the killer.

Much to Jolivet's surprise, he determines that Amy is much more complex than she seems and may possess an acute power of observation that is strong enough to assist him in his difficult homicide cases. Intrigue and desire may lead Amy and Jolivet to discover more than they bargained for in a passionate journey toward intimacy and joy on the enchanting Ile St-Louis.

Have you ever wanted to go to Paris? If so, this tale will take you there. In reading it, you will experience all the sites of an area known as the Ile St-Louis, at the heart of the great city.

Talented author Gini Anding describes the Ile and its culture so well, you
will see the sights and smell the food cooking and feel as if you are there. Join Amy Page and Jean-Michel Jolivet as they try to unravel a mystery involving two of Amy's oldest friends.

A simple visit to a flea market can prove murderous, the simple purchase of a writing desk can drag you into an international crime ring and bring you face to face with death. You will want to warn Amy not to go out after dark, even with an escord. You will also want to warn Jean-Michel not to ignore her.

A complex set of subplots woven tightly into a story of intrigue and death
as told by a cast of colorful characters you will enjoy meeting will have
you turning the pages to find out what happens next.

I am pleased to recommend this well told story to any reader of mysteries
who enjoys cooking, sight seeing, history, or just visiting old houses. It is all here in splendid detail. You will want to read this authors other books too. Enjoy. I did.

5 out of 5 stars No ordinary whodunit.......2007-03-22

I've never been to Paris but I feel as though I have after reading Gini Anding's "Witness on the Quay." This is no ordinary whodunit. The book is full of intrigue, romance, history, and raw human emotion; an entertaining read!

Amy Page is a middle-aged widow, authoring a cookbook and staying in Paris for a good length of time. She has rented a flat and is enchanted with Ile St-Louis. The mystery begins as she returns to her apartment and finds that a taxi driver has been murdered right outside her door. Jean-Michel Jolivet, an inspector with the French Police, asks her questions over a period of hours. This is the beginning of an interesting relationship and the unraveling of a mystery much bigger than the murder of one man.

As the case evolves it seems that Amy is much more involved than a simple witness, and even more than she ever realized. And as time goes on she and Jean-Michel become more involved than either of them intended. The plot thickens as the pages turn and readers will find they stay up late to find out what happens next.

Gini Anding has written an intriguing story with an ever-expanding plot. It is a delightful read, but even more than that it is a glimpse into Paris that many people will have dreamed of. I hope to see more from this author in the future but in the meantime I recommend "Witness on the Quay" to anyone who loves a good mystery.

1 out of 5 stars No pace, no tension. Couldn't finish it........2006-05-28

I would usually give any book set in Paris an automatic 3 stars, but not this one - I abandoned it on page 85 simply too bored to continue. Instead of a murder mystery, this book unfolds more like a cheap romance novel. The only purpose of the crime seems to be to have the main characters meet. The helpless American writer and the dashing French inspecter (who, of course, drives a Ferrari). This book has no pace or tension.

Try the Aimee Leduc series by Cara Black for an edgier Paris read.

4 out of 5 stars Witness on the Quay.......2005-09-27

Overall a delightful book to read. Gini Anding very obviously loves Paris and successfully communicates her enthusiasm for the city of light on nearly every page.
The plot is excellent and the characters are vivid, the story flows with ease.
I did find the ending a little abrupt which left me with a feeling of having missed the dessert cart somewhat.
Her descriptions of Ille St. Louis and surrounding areas was very well done and her historical references were illuminating even though I have been walking Paris during constant visits for some 40 years.
Also her characterisations of her "players" was remeniscent of the wonderfully studied style of Georges Simenon.
I look forward to her next Paris based book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Ingenious Technique.......2005-09-09

I thought I had figured out this story early on, but Anding's chameleon-like narrative kept throwing me off the track. The romance plot looks predictable at first but is soon preempted by a richly detailed, authentic travelogue centered on the historic Ile St.-Louis in Paris. Then the murder mystery takes center stage, but just as that seems nearing resolution, unexpected developments in the romance upstage it. This is a compelling, immediate, exciting story with the shifting emphases on each of these responses leaving the reader constantly off-balance--and that element of surprise is the fourth factor in this novel's consistent charm and interest.

For any fan of Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, Venus series, Pellucidar, even Westerns, and many more, this biography of the creator of all of the above, is a must have and a must read!!! I discovered Tarzan and John Carter in the 60s when paperback editions were readily available. Add to that replays of old movies on TV (Tarzan - Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe, and the rest) and the creation of a fan was in the making. This reprint of the 1967 (The Big Swingers) makes this enthralling look at the life and times of Edgar Rice Burroughs available for the first time in too many years. Now, old and "new" fans alike can marvel at the fullness of this work. I can't praise it enough for allowing this "older" fan to relive the memories of cinema, television, and books that enchanted me as a youngster. For fans and followers, young and old, this book is an absolute essential for your library.

The Union Square Cafe is consistently ranked New York City's favorite restaurant by the Zagat survey. Why? Superb yet relaxed food served in a setting both deluxe and friendly. Second Helpings from Union Square Cafe, the follow-up to the restaurant's proprietor Danny Meyer and chef-co-owner Michael Romano's Union Square Cafe Cookbook, offers readers 140 recipes for Union Square's popular fare--Italian-inflected "everyday" cooking taken to a higher, yummier, but completely cook-friendly power. Dishes like Butternut Squash and Bean Soup, Roasted Halibut Pugliese-Style, and Zucchini Purée with Marjoram exemplify the book's unique approach; simple in conception and easy to execute, they nonetheless pack flavor and style to burn.

Chapters cover appetizers to desserts, with sections devoted to pasta and risotto and to side dishes and condiments, such as the restaurant's much-loved Olive Mashed Potatoes and Apple-Pear Chutney. Sweets like Butterscotch Pudding with Brown Sugar Sauce and Chocolate Pudding Flan should also keep diners happy. A word must be said about the photographs of Duane Michals, whose signature storytelling style (depicting, for example, a seated couple's response to a cell-phone-using table neighbor) wonderfully echoes the sweetly knowing tone of the restaurant itself. With a section on basic preparations, the book should become a trusted kitchen friend. --Arthur Boehm

                    Book Description

Ask New Yorkers to name their favorite restaurant and they are likely to reply: "Union Square Cafe." Indeed, Union Square Cafe has been ranked the city's most popular restaurant by the Zagat Survey for five consecutive years and has earned many of the food world's top honors, including a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant of the Year, two three-star rankings from the New York Times, seven Awards of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine, and the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef in New York Award for Michael Romano. What makes USC stand out in a sea of other great New York City restaurants? A simple but rare combination of extraordinary food, excellent wine, and the sort of warm, genuine hospitality one typically finds only in a neighborhood spot. In this new cookbook, proprietor Danny Meyer and executive chef and co-owner Michael Romano share the delicious dishes that have kept their customers coming back for more, year after year. Following the high standards for taste and accessibility set by their award-winning Union Square Cafe Cookbook, Second Helpings from Union Square Cafe offers more than 140 inspired recipes for everything from appetizers, soups, and salads to pastas, main courses, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts. These are the dishes that USC customers have come to know and love, including such favorites as a new version of their renowned Fried Calamari, Salt-Baked Chicken, Bollito di Vitello, Roasted Root Vegetables, and Blueberry-Lemon Meringue Pie.

But, more than simply a recipe collection, Second Helpings is a valuable kitchen resource for anyone interested in elevating his or her cooking to a new level. Michael teaches home cooks how to make their own pasta, create the juiciest chicken imaginable, correctly clean morels, and add new depth of flavor to all kinds of dishes, while Danny offers lively commentary and wine accompaniments for nearly every recipe. With their able guidance, even the most inexperienced cooks can turn out spectacular food with ease and joy.

Second Helpings captures the unique spirit of Union Square Cafe not just with recipes and animated text, but also with original black-and-white images by internationally acclaimed photographer Duane Michals. A longtime friend of USC, Duane has contributed his witty visual stories and restaurant vignettes in an innovative departure from standard food photography.

On every level Second Helpings from Union Square Cafe is a cookbook you'll treasure using again and again. Like the restaurant, it will become a familiar favorite and a trusted source of great food.

5 out of 5 stars one recipe under my belt!.......2003-11-28

I just made the Turkey with Apple Cider Gravy. Hands down the best turkey I have ever prepared. All of my dinner guests for Thanksgiving this year commented that it was the best turkey they have ever had. Wow! The turkey was absolutely delicious, succulent, and wonderfully flavored by the complex assortment of ingredients that came about in the brining process and the stuffing and gravy. I used quince for the first time as an ingredient in my cooking.

The book is invitingly presented with it's story line approach through the photographs, sometimes silly. But yes, as another reviewer mentioned there is Jacque Pepin in the black and white photo essay in one chapter looking like he's truly enjoying himself. A great endorsement for this book as I love his cooking and personality as much as I do Julia Child.

I can't wait to try other recipes from this book and soon. I think that this book will become a regular for me to try out new recipes and enhance my own knowledge of my Northern Italian Nona's cooking every day.

4 out of 5 stars More of the same with extra spice in the pics.......2003-11-15

Most of what I found true of the first Union Square Café is also true of this sequel. And, the appearance of a sequel justifies the good opinion of the first volume. The new volume continues it's contribution to my Italian repetoire and continues to do it with recipes which are exceptionally well written. The introduction to the new volume makes it clear that many, if not most of the dishes are ... from Italian restaurants and nonas. I like this, if only because I find this much more believable than if the authors took credit for the recipes themselves. I also appreciate the traditional Italian names of the dishes as it makes it easier to compare these recipes with those done by classic Italian food writers such as Marcella Hazan and Lidia Bastianich.

The new volume uses it's photographs to add a rare element of humor to the cookbook. It is great good fun to do some celebrity spotting in the pics and be reassured that if Jacque Pepin takes the trouble to eat there, something good much be going on in the back of the house.

The new volume includes a long Pasta and Risotto chapter. A welcome addition.

On the down side, I find some of the recipes fairly long. Several are probably too much for the casual cook, although I believe some of the length is due to their being very thorough in their explanations.

Since this is a sequel to a well received book, I find the Pantry section to be a waste of space. Many named preparations from the first book are repeated in the second. Since these preparations are also available in hundreds of other books, I think this is blatant padding.

Bottom line is that the book is a worthy continuation to the original.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Great Second Act.......2003-03-09

i LOVED the first Union Square Cookbook, and use its recipes regularly...and i have been SO disappointed with this one...i have not made ANYTHING that i liked from this cookbook...spare yourself

4 out of 5 stars Unusual but excessible recipes.......2002-09-27

Sometimes the ingredient lists are a bit daunting, especially if one lives outside of a major metropolitan area, but it's worth the effort. The impressive thing about the recipes included in Union Square Cafe's second cookbook is that the various flavors are distinct while working together. For example, a pasta dish with gorgonzola and fresh corn requires that you simmer the husks in a broth--what an odd notion and what a great result !
I would say that the procedures are straightforward, but time-consuming. These are recipes that you have to plan for; they are not last-minute, just home-from-work desperation dinners. With that in mind, these are tasty, perhaps even mind -(not to say waist-) expanding recipes.

                    4 out of 5 stars Second Helpings.......2002-04-18

Some of these recipes are a little difficult to follow, but overall this is a good cookbook. The entrees are crowd pleasers at dinner parties!

                      Book Description

How did ordinary people live through the extraordinary changes that have swept across modern China? How did peasants transform themselves into urbanites? How did the citizens of Shanghai cope with the epic upheavals--revolution, war, and again revolution--that shook their lives? Even after decades of scholarship devoted to modern Chinese history, our understanding of the daily lives of the common people of China remains sketchy and incomplete. In this carefully researched study, Hanchao Lu weaves rich documentary data with ethnographic surveys and interviews to reconstruct the fabric of everyday life in China's largest and most complex city in the first half of this century.

This book is a welcome escape from the usual exotic kaleidoscope of old Shanghai descriptions of the city as the Paris of Asia, with its underworld, foreign expatriates, princely buildings and so on. On the contrary it documents Shanghai at street level and portrays the every day life of the man in the street. Obviously the work of an academic, it details immigration patterns, the intricacies of byzantine rental agreements, rickshaw fare structures, shikumen house floor plans in a scientific way. A long but fascinating reading, it will only appeal to people who already know the city well and want to go one step further in their understanding of Shanghai - and are not put off by the astronomic quantity of Chinese words contained in its pages.

5 out of 5 stars The truest portrait of Shanghai as it was and as it is.......2002-11-09

If you are looking to understand the enigma that is Shanghai, then look no further than Mr. Lu's incredibly insightful "Beyond the Neon Lights". It could be subtitled: "Beyond the hype, the myths, the stereotypes and the cliches," but Mr. Lu is an academic, and uses sound research to sell his books rather than sensationalism. Bravo for him, I say.

Shanghai history books - the sensationalist, badly researched ones, at least - tend to present an Old Shanghai of Gangsters, Bankers, Hookers, and Foreigners...oh my! Even the more thorough ones present mostly the wild advantures of those wacky expatriates, ignoring or neglecting the role and the life of the "laobaixing", the ordinary people of Shanghai.

"Beyond the Neon Lights" fills this very large gap amazingly well. It is dedicated to life in the lanes that were and are the arteries of the city, the source of its lifeblood, the petty urbanites. Lu explores the architecture of the Shikumen, the typical pre-1920s Shanghai lane dwelling, and explains how its system of sub-sub- and sub-letting fomented the complicated communities that emerged there. He also conveys how the social structures and cultural habits changed with the introduction of more modern lanes (with indoor plumbing, fewer households, etc) and the Art Deco highrises.

Every aspect of life in Shanghai was and often still is structured around the lane neighborhood. Although the new-style lanes are less contained, more open, and thus less of a microcosm, both vintages boast their own economy of scale. There is the old-style convenience store, the "tobacco and paper shop", at the entrance, plus a tailor, produce dealer, shoe-repairman, locksmith, pharacist...and more in the larger lanes. Other needs were serviced by the itineret peddlars, selling goods or repairing them or buying rubbish. The latter, Lu explains, were the main source of income for the housekeepers of the middle class.

The roving peddlers still ply their trade in Shanghai's remaining lanes; all that has changed are their regional backgrounds and some of their wares. But now, as then, they are distinguished by the ditties they sing to announce their arrival. I awake every morning to the tune of one of the three rice vendors who frequents my lane; he is followed by a series of seasonal fruit vendors, the chicken man, the beer man, and the used electronic buyers. About once a week the wicker chair repairman wanders by. The travelling cobbler skirts my street, since he has three permanent competitors on the block, but I see and hear him elsewhere. I rarely use their services, but I love hearing them: they make Shanghai Shanghai.

Lu also documents the migration patterns that configured the people who normally count themselves as Shanghainese. The relatively high-class ones came from Ningbo, Hangzhou and elsewhere in Zhejiang Province, the middle class from Jiangsu south of the Yangtze, and the dregs from north of the Yangtze. "Beyond the Neon Lights" goes into interesting depths about the slums of these despised "Jiangbei" people. This was of particular interest to me, as my current and previous residences are adjacent to the most notorious old slums: along the Suzhou Creek, which still exists, and on the Zhaojiabang Creek, which has since given way to a six-lane highway.

All the bustle, activity, and "decadence" that happened on Shanghai's main streets was only possible because of the oddly parochial yet international Shanghainese attitudes cultivated in the lanes. They were the foundation of the city, and these attitudes will prevail long after the lanes have vanished to give way to the urban planners' (mostly vengeful Jiangbei people) futuristic vision. The stories contained in "Beyond the Neon Lights" pose an argument why Shanghai's rapidly vanishing lanes should be preserved, or at least why you should enjoy them while you can.

2 out of 5 stars "Boxes and Chests" is a big disappointment........2004-06-22

This book is a big disappointment and a frustration. It's obvious the Bridgewaters have the knowledge to build fabulous furniture but they have chosen to keep that knowledge a secret. With weak project sketches and ambiguous, discontinuous text, it is difficult to see how they breezed through point "A" to point "B." Their reading audience is not the beginning woodworker. The Bridgewaters assume the reader has a full array of wood planes and wood carving tools and knows how to use them without need for explanation. This is perhaps more a style book for the advance woodworker (I wish I were) who is in a rut for new ideas. Maybe they had a lousy editor?

Once called the "perfect example of a homeless waif" by director Cecil B. DeMille, Junior Coghlan has been acting in movies for over 70 years. Perhaps best remembered for his role as Billy Batson in the Republic serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel, he has worked with many of the legends of Hollywood, such as Charlie Chaplin, Mickey Rooney, Jackie Cooper, and Shirley Temple. Also included are the stories of Coghlan's 23-year naval service, where he enlisted as an aviator during World War II and eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Included are the stories of his eight years as the naval liaison on such films as The Caine Mutiny and Mr. Roberts. A filmography traces his career.
