Book Description

The intrepid women of The Hot Flash Club are back for the holidays, soothing jingled nerves and stressed shoppers in their exclusive spa and celebrating the joys of the season. In her witty and delightfully wisecracking prose, Nancy Thayer tells a heartwarming tale packed with fun, secrets, romance–and an ample dose of good cheer.

When the Hot Flash friends gather at the spa to trim the Christmas tree, they share steaming mugs of hot chocolate, a few laughs, and a vow to make this holiday one to remember. And it is–but not in the cheerful, ho-ho-ho way they expected. Instead, Christmas brings family conflicts, household accidents, plane delays–and that’s just the beginning.

After a hazardous holiday season, the women make resolutions that they intend to keep . . . in a perfect world. But life–and their friends and relatives–cause complications. Shirley lends financial support to her boyfriend’s schemes, which infuriates Alice, whose own son commits an act she’s not sure she can accept. Marilyn travels to Scotland and falls in love, but her octogenarian mother needs her at home. And when Polly and Faye find themselves pitted against each other by a younger woman, an they overcome this clash to make a new, entrepreneurial dream come true? Then real disaster strikes, bringing new challenges and surprising revelations.

Just as every month of the year throws new problems at us all, so too does the end of the year give us the chance to reunite and put these problems
into their proper perspective. And when the Hot Flash Five get together for the holidays, we should expect nothing less than the unexpected.

Hot flashes may be a bummer but the books keep getting better and better. Hot Flash Holidays is an easy, fun read to lift your spirits with some laughter thrown in for good measure. Keep them coming Nancy Thayer!

4 out of 5 stars My wife loves me for giving her mother this book........2006-12-29

Four and a half stars (OK, I'm a guy, give me a break). Hot Flash Holidays is a good holiday selection because the setting is the holidays, and it is not superficial but stays light. Nancy Thayer is witty and truthful about a sensitive time in women's lives, and you know what George Bernard Shaw said about being truthful: "If you're going to tell the truth make them laugh or they'll kill you." That goes double for this subject!

Thayer does just that, she makes wise-cracking intrepid women facing the time of, well, certain age, warm, poignant and funny. My wife (recent girlfriend) gave me a condition to read this book, sort of a insurance she could know I would work on my sensitive side. It also went under her mother's Christmas tree this year. Things haven't been better.

This is a story about life and events not going the way expected. The usual holiday conflicts and accidents and travel delays culminate in the women making resolutions they vow to keep. Then reality unravels the best of intentions as wills and life intersect.

Marilyn falls in love in Scotland, and is torn between that and her octogenarian mother who needs her. When a younger woman pits Polly and Faye against each other, do they turn the sour bite to lemonade? Shirley lends her boyfriend money but doesn't get the result she wanted...and on and on including real disaster. These are real human beings at bat. It's fun, light reading that gets the medicine in between the sheets. I'm glad I listened to my wife, and mother-in-law is in a pretty good mood lately.

I recommend this book, and it will do the job as a holiday gift to various family members or their friends. Another note, when you hear someone complaining at the office about his mother-in-law, let him know about this book.

3 out of 5 stars Sweet and Fun.......2006-06-11

This third entry in the enjoyable "Hot Flash" series brings back our buddies Faye, Alice, Marilyn and Polly, in a sequel that takes them through the year, from holiday to holiday.

We follow the women through various triumphs and travails, from the appearance of Marilyn's elderly mother Ruth (a wonderful new character), who has become just a bit dotty, to the birth of new grandchildren, unwelcome family changes, relationships begun and ended, and other realities in any woman's life.

The story, as always, is endearing, not too meaningful, not too heavy, not earth-shattering, but terribly sweet. I would like a lot less graphic descriptions of the characters' sundry hot flashes, and a bit more fleshing out of their grown children's strange (in many cases) relationships, but on the whole, I have no complaints.

A lovely, heartwarming read, nice for an evening alone in front of the fire, or while lounging in the shade on a summer's day.

Investigator Sharon McCone has been asked to do an assignment in which she'll work with Willie Whelan, a man who sells goods at flea markets. Willie is concerned because a man is stalking him and he wants Sharon to find out why. As she begins the investigation, the stalker is killed and Willie is the chief suspect. Sharon begins to uncover some strange occurrences in connection with the murdered man, and before it's all over her own life is put in jeopardy. This is a good mystery which Marcia Muller fans will want to read and it has some romance thrown in for good measure.

4 out of 5 stars Solid entry in the Sharon McCone series.......2001-09-29

Sharon McCone has a difficult assignment. Why is a man in a suit and a yarmulke following Willie - flea market entrepanuer extradinaire? What unfolds is a short (152 pages) but tightly woven tale of torahs, player pianos, Vietnam PTSD, cabins in the Santa Cruz mountains and Sharon's ability to see the connections. It's a solid (not stellar) book in the series. As a native of the Bay Area, I enjoy her musings about the locale as much as the story and she goes some pretty interesting places in this episode. Also, Don the DJ from Games to Keep the Dark Away is back so we have a little romance for Sharon.

4 out of 5 stars Leave a Message for Willie.......2001-06-09

"Leave a Message for Willie" is the fifth novel in the Sharon McCone series by Marcia Muller. Willie Whelan is a vendor, who is also a fence, at the Saltflats Flea Market. He hires McCone to check on a man wearing a yarmulke who has been hanging around Willie's stall. The man, Jerry Levin, claims he is working for a group that recovers stolen Torahs. Later that day Levin is found dead in Whelan's garage. Willie becomes the major suspect in this murder, and Sharon McCone must find the real killer. All the Sharon McCone mysteries are well-plotted, and the characters, especially McCone, make them a pleasure to read. "Leave a Message for Willie" is a very good novel.

5 out of 5 stars cathartic for kids and adults.......2003-11-10

This is a really useful book for children and the adults who share their lives with them. We have lost a number of relatives over the past few years, and of all the books out there on death, this is the one that my kids keep going back to. Appropriate for most ages, it covers several of the ways that children can experience loss (death of a relative or friend; result of an accident or illness; deceased as a young person or an old person), giving this book something for everyone (such as it is). It is very accessible, and for parents who are reading it aloud to younnger children or using it as a segue to discussion with an older child, it isn't annoying after you have read it over and over and over.

I highly recommend this book for any child dealing with the death of a loved one or just death as a concept.

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive exploration of a child's saddness and grief.......2001-06-17

This book tells three separate stories about children's experiences with death. The first tells how a boy deals with the death of his uncle. The second, how students deal with the sudden death of a classmate. The third tells of a girl who is at the bedside with her family when her grandmother dies. Each one deals with the sad feelings surrounding death, but also celebrates the life of the deceased individual. Each story ends with how the children cope and come to terms with loss. Before and after each story are poems that connect death with the celebration of life. These explain that endings and beginnings are all connected. I was particularly impressed with the sensitive way that the author deals with a child's sadness and gently shows ways of coping. She notes that the sadness may never completely go away, but that eventually it is outweighed by understanding and new forms of mastery.

5 out of 5 stars The Saddest Time.......2000-07-11

The Saddest Time is a great resource to use with children that are dealing with both the potential and eventual loss of someone they care about. There are three short stories in this book. The first one deals with the loss of what appears to be a middle aged uncle, the second the unexpected and accidental death of a young child, and the third the dying and death of an older person, in this case the grandmother. The first story includes the anticipatory grief phase that the child experiences. Trying to make conversation with someone who is terminally ill. It addresses the fear associated with the possibility of losing parents. It also addresses the grief after the death, and attempts to help and comfort the family. The second story is about an accidental death of a classmate. The children in the classroom are given the opportunity to remember and discuss their feelings. They are also encouraged to send the family cards and letters, writing about special times they shared with their friend that died. The third story is about a child's grandmother who is dying and actually dies when the family is present. It discusses the feelings of sadness and anger that the child feels. It further discusses in simple terms, the funeral and the support provided to the grandfather. It also encourages the child to reminisce. Overall, this book really encorporates death as a normal part of life. The emotions experienced because of death are normalized and expected. It addresses feeling experienced. Discusses feelings and common funeral rituals as well as the support that is shared with friends and families after a loss. People, including children experience grief in their own way. This is an excellent book,as it encorporates anticipatory grief as well as the grief experienced after the death of a loved one. It also addresses three different experiences that are common in life. I feel it could help adults and children alike. This book would be great a great resource for the community and should be included in school system, public libraries. We are including this in our hospice library for our community to use.

India's vegetable cuisine is the world's most varied. That was proven by Yamuna Devi's encyclopedic Lord Krishna's Cuisine: the Art of Vegetarian Cooking. Drawing on it, The Best of Lord Krishna's Cuisine presents 172 meatless dishes--detailed, wide-ranging recipes that focus on lightness and cooking ease. Readers seeking an introduction to the vibrant cooking of India's vegetarians (many Krishna devotees) as well as those wishing practical recipes for sophisticated meatless cooking will be delighted.

Divided into chapters exploring dals (legumes), pilafs and vegetable dishes, salads, and snacks and desserts, among others, the book beautifully balances accessible recipes with lively investigation. (Devi examines, for example, the place of dals in Indian culinary tradition, their kinds and uses, nutritional value, and various preparation methods, including pressure cooking.) Equally useful are the recipe head notes, which offer extensive tips on techniques; flavor information; ingredient profiles and serving suggestions. Worth trying immediately are Devi's Curried Potatoes with Eggplant; Baked Bananas with Tamarind-Flavored Coconut; and Zucchini Pakoras with Crushed Peanuts, one of many delectable fritter recipes. Among the chutneys, the sweet tomato with fennel and the golden papaya chip would make exciting accompaniments. The desserts, including Cardamom Shortbread Cookies and Pistachio Milk Fudge, challenge the usual Western indifference to Indian sweets. The author also offers chilled drinks like the intriguing Perfumed Sandalwood Crush. Concluding with a comprehensive glossary, the book provides a window on an ancient culinary art made modern by Devi's inquiring spirit and practical know-how. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Superb, tasty recipes from a respected author and chef.......2006-10-29

A couple of the reviewers who have said here that the recipes are not authentically Indian are completely misinformed about what authentic Indian food is like, and what Indians do and do not eat. The recipes in it come out great and are meticulously explained. As an Indian, I can assure you they are authentic. There are large numbers of Indians who do eat food like the recipes in this book. This is exactly what authentic Indian food was until even fifty years ago, across large parts of India.

Unfortunately, Indian cuisine has become polluted by ideas on nutrition borrowed from the west - more sugar, onions, meat, eggs - and not by coincidence, this has been followed by the introduction of diseases that were absent in India till recently - diabetes, heart disease, obesity.

Specifically about the recipes presented in this book: if you follow them, you will find the resultant food is bursting with flavor and health, but not with the oily, heavy, hyper-spicy fullness that characterises a lot of so-called Indian food in many restaurants and 'Indian' cookbooks across the world. You will not be disappointed if you buy this book or her larger, original cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars The very best cookbook I own.......2004-08-14

This is not just a collection of recipes, it is a full-fledged education in the ways and means of indian cooking, replete with cultural background. The ancient and authentic recipes she shares are carefully detailed and easy to follow. Many are easy to prepare. It is a fascination and delight to read.

1 out of 5 stars Authentic? Depends on your perspective.......2003-09-01

If you are more concerned with adhering to Vedic principles than in creating interesting Indian food, then by golly, this is the cookbook for you. Probably you don't consider other Indian food to be authentic (just the way Texans don't consider Kansas City or Carolina barbeque to be REAL barbeque), but let's face it: most Indians no longer adhere strictly to the Vedic principles when it comes to food preparation. No onions, no garlic? I don't think so.

This is a cookbook more concerned with Vedic hair-splitting than with creating decent recipes. I found that most of the recipes I tried were unnecessarily complicated, if not downright unworkable, and the results, more often than not, were totally bland and uninteresting. After several unsatisfying attempts, I abandoned this cookbook as a hopeless case, and it has gathered dust on my bookshelf for the last 7-8 years.

Keep in mind that the author (the former Joan Campanella) is a convert to what we commonly define as the Hare Krishnas, and that the followers of this movement comprise a tiny fraction of India's population. They are like Vegans, as compared to your average Vegetarian, and their food cannot by any definition be called the food of the average Indian.

It amazes me that the recipes of a western convert are called more authentic than the recipes of native Indians, but then again, it is most likely only other converts to the Krishna Consciousness movement saying that.

If this belief system appeals to you, then by all means, use this cookbook with great relish. There is plenty of Vaishnava musing to be found within this book's pages. The rest of us prefer not to die of boredom or frustation from unworkable recipes.

1 out of 5 stars not authentic, not very indian.......2000-09-01

          I

          That book that:

"A decade ago Yamuna Devi's Lord Krishna's Cuisine was named Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals "

was given that award when it was practically the only indian cookbook on the shelf back in the late 70's. Back then people didn't know what real indian cuisine tasted like.

As an indian I will tell you, these recipes are NOT authentic indian at all. Although they follow strict VEDIC indian food guidelines, in that there is no garlic, onion, meat, eggs etc., they could be much, much better.

This is more like very bland (remember no onion etc.) AMERICAN FOOD that follows VEDIC indian GUIDLINES with a few indian spices thrown in. What a mess!

Unless you are a really following vedic guildlines for religious reasons and have tried everything else, there are much better books to buy.

If you ARE following vedic guidlines I would suggest you do a search on the internet for vedic indian cookbooks (from India) because this is the only one I've come across here and its really bad. I mean really bad :(.

Quite frankly I'm baffled by other reviewers who find this cookbok to be difficult or disappointing. Someone who finds the taste of oily, non-descript, and "curry" flavored foods you find in many Indian restaurants as excellent examples of Indian cooking might be confused by Yamuna Devi's presentation of subtly spiced and well balanced dishes. I grew up in India and traveled throughout much of the country. I can attest that the author has beautifully captured the wonderfully deep culinary tradition that India has to offer. On a side note, I quite enjoy the personal way Yamuna Devi relates her culinary voyage to her readers. She writes thoughtfully of sources and inspirations for recipes. It seems that her spiritual awakening is tied to her cooking and therefore it seems natural that she would relate these personal reflections to her readers.

I bought this book in 1999 and love it. I made a small quilt using blues for the sky and used rusts for fall leaves in the panes of the windows. It is a very well thought out book with good details to teach you to fold your own windows. I love it in my collection of books. I think I will make another Cathedral Window quilt.

                  Book Description

The Bloomsbury circle has long preoccupied writers, critics, and the general public alike. For many years its focal point was Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex, home to Vanessa and Clive Bell and Duncan Grant. A Cézanne in the Hedge brings together thirty firsthand reminiscences of the Charleston, vividly and amusingly evoking its creativity—and eccentricity. Childhood memories from Quentin Bell, Angelica Garnett, and Nigel Nicholson are interspersed with appraisals of the work of Bloomsbury members such as Roger Fry, Maynard Keynes, and Virginia Woolf and of their contribution to twentieth-century British art and thought. The finale is a childhood spoof written by Virginia Woolf entitled "A Terrible Tragedy in a Duckpond."

I agree with the previous reader, this is it ... the definitive book on Charleston Farmhouse. Although I think this book is more than a glimpse of the house and garden for those unable to visit, it is a surperb reference for those of us that have visited and wish to recall the house, etc. The photography is stunning, the text is informative. A worthwhile addition to any Bloomsbury book collection.

4 out of 5 stars English food's less than lustrous reputation..........2005-11-17

...Appears to be undeserved! There are hordes of mouthwatering wholesome, farmer's market-ready recipes in here. I am only giving it four stars because it doesn't have pictures of them, and a huge number of them aren't suitable for vegetarians (of which I'm one).

On the other hand, it does have lots of random, old-timey engravings and woodcuts of food-related miscellany scattered among its copious pages. Better, it contains a homey, grandmum-style recipe for just about any traditional British food that could possibly be worth eating. It's huge. It goes on forever (nearly 450 pages). It helped me learn how to make a real Irish carrot stew, and has an entire chapter (the thirteenth, ironically enough) of traditional liquors you can make at home including wassail and Irish stout (yes, I'm of Irish descent). There are four chapters dedicated to various types of sweets, and the bread section is mind-boggling. Ditto the preserves.

I think this would be a treasured and well-used reference for any traditional food-lover, especially one who happens to be an anglophile.

Begging your pardon, but I believe I'm beginning to drool. I must pop out for a bite. Cheerio, then!

                            Book Description

Vasari's celebration of the art of the central Italian cities of Florence, Rome and Venice, has long left in shadow the art of northern Italy. The economic and historical decline of the region compounded this effect with the dispersal of the treasures of the Farnese to Naples, the Este to Dresden and the Gonzaga to Madrid and Paris. Each chapter in this volume celebrates a stunning work from the region, among them Correggio's famed Camera di San Paolo in Parma, Parmigianino's Camerino in the Rocca Sanvitale near Parma, the studiolo of Alberto Pio at Carpi, and the Tomb of the Ancestors in the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini.

The volume as a whole offers fascinating insights into the tussle between the maniera moderna and the maniera devota in the first half of the sixteenth century, when the unity between the elegance and beauty of art and its religious significance came under debate. Around the year 1550, when Michelangelo's Last Judgement came under attack for impiety and lasciviousness and the reformists called for an art that would invoke in the viewer a devotional response that identified manifestations of the devine with human feelings and emotions. In northern Italy, it was on the foundation laid by Correggio, with his tenderness and ability to evoke the softness of living flesh, that the Carracci brothers built their reform of painting.

                              Book Description

No Surrender! No Retreat! examines the careers of fifteen pioneer performers and their triumphs over herculean obstacles. It is a look back over the 20th century and documents personal histories of staggering achievement in spite of institutional racism, gender oppression, and classism. Twenty-four years in the making, No Surrender! No Retreat! is an indispensable work on African Americans in the performing arts, examining well-known performers, such as James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman, and Pearl Bailey. Rare archival material and a number of personal interviews enrich this tome. Glenda E. Gill's work is a moving and sometimes tragic account of the lives and careers of some of America's most outstanding African American pioneers in theater.
