Product Description
In & Out is a horse tale like no other. A sprawling narrative filled with romance, intrigue, and excitement, it also provides a clear-eyed and wholly realistic view of the equestrian world, offering the kind of authentic details about horses, riding techniques, and business practices that only an insider could provide. At the center of the story stands Jericho Brandeis, an ambitious yet untamed man who seeks glory on his own terms. An intriguing cast of characters surrounds him, including the wealthy patron Bob Marx, the only man who can help Jericho realize his dreams, Marx's sexy young wife, Darien, whose illicit love could become Jericho's downfall, U.S. Chef d'Equip Chuck Frankel, the closest thing to a father figure Jericho has ever known, hunk bartender Trevor Braeden, Jericho's friend and rival, and the indomitable stallion Chasseur de Lion, an alluring yet potentially fatal challenge to Jericho's considerable horsemanship. Jericho must maneuver his way through a hazardous maze of violence, corruption, and seduction if he is to fulfill his aspirations at the World Equestrian Games. The adventures of Jericho Brandeis, full of passion, promise, and turmoil, will thrill all lovers of horses and of adventure and romance.

Mercedes Raye.......2007-08-20
This is one of my favorite books. Yes it certainly is an adults book but it has a great story line. I only hope that Barbara Moss write a sequel. Great book!!!
In and Out.......2007-08-05
This is a wonderful book esp. if you are a educated jumper rider. I can't even put it down and have recommended it to many of my other horse friends. The story line and details are right on... it sounds like it is written by someone who has "been there and done that" in Wellington and on the nitty gritty jumper circuit as well as climbing to the top in the horse competition world. I can't wait for another book written by Barbara Moss regarding any story line on the competitive horse world with its background in Wellington and Europe.
Loved the horsey talk, hated the characters.......2007-06-27
Jerico Brandeis is a Grand Prix level rider who has set his sights on quaifying for the Olympic team and running his training/showing business. He is a cocky, and arrogant personality who has loads of psychoanalyisis to get through. He also has some serious difficulties with women and definitely waffles between viewing them as objects to falling desperately head over heals in love with them. While I agree that this is very stereotypical of trainers in this industry, that's just it... it's a stereotype.
Of course such a self involved individual needs a roommate; welcome Starbucks; this is a character that I think is supposed to be a foil/comedic relief for the story. I hate this guy; he is a former Starbucks employee/ photographer who has the brain of a pea and the looks of a male model. Come on!
Now we get to the conflict. Much of the drama in this book arises from him crossing over professional lines; as in having an affair with his main patron's wife, oh, and getting caught at it, then doing it again and getting her pregnant when the spouse is STERILE (DUH!). This book was pure soap opera drama in the human relations department with a little porn thrown in for flavoring.
The only redeeming value in this book is the depiction of the horses, the jumping and the actual mechanics of the show jumping industry (which was still a bit stereotypical) In terms of the descriptions of the riding and show jumping component, I felt that the book did a good job in giving us a glimpse into that world. Jericho's career was sped up a bit for the sake of the plot line, but you do get a good idea of how hard it is to make it in that world.
Second Book.......2007-06-15
Any word yet on a second book for the series?
Couldn't put it down.......2007-03-15
The story sweeps you along. Horses, adventure and romance (yes, and sex)combine with intriguing characters, humor and plot twists to produce a great story. I can't wait for her next novel.
Book Description
Welsh constable Evan Evans knows that village life is not as peaceful as it seems--and now his job takes a turn toward the tragic when the man accused of killing his father is accused of murder once again.
Customer Reviews:
A Weak Entry in a Great Series.......2004-08-28
When foot and mouth disease makes its way to Wales, Constable Evan Evans finds himself caught between his job and his friends in the village. When his boss offers him time off, he and his fiancee Bronwen decide to go visit each other's family.
They've hardly arrived at Mrs. Evans in Swansea before they get the news. The young man who killed Evan's father years ago has just been arrested for another murder. Called into the hearing to keep him in jail without bail, Evan makes a startling discovery - he thinks the kid is innocent this time. Now he must sneak around behind the backs of the police and his mother to find the real killer. But will he alienate all those he loves as a result?
Normally, I love this series. It's a light, fun excursion to a part of the world I would love to visit. This book was a disappointment, however. The tone of the book is significantly darker then the others in the series, not providing the escape I was looking for. The biggest problem is the plot. It starts rather slowly and doesn't really get rolling until about a third of the way into the book. Then, I had everything but the motive figured out about 80 pages before the end. On the bright side, we get to see significantly more of Bronwen then normal, and her interaction with Evan is some of the best in the series. She definitely needs more page time in future books.
This book has some great moments and fans of the series will certainly enjoy it. But if you're new to this great series, don't start here and don't judge the entire series by this book.
Balance Needed Here.......2004-04-04
This series has swung from Disney to Grimm Brothers. The early fuzzy-bunny books were "charming" to the point of cloying, but if I have to choose one style or the other, I'll take the Disney style over the grimness of this book. I could not bear to read of the herds and flocks being destroyed. Bad enough it was all over the news; do I have to find it in my escape reading also? I'm going to be very careful about any Rhys Bowen purchases in the future, instead of treating her works as virtually auto-buys.
Evan goes south.......2003-07-28
I've enjoyed all of Rhys Bowen's books, including this one.
Evan does not want to be around to enforce the Ministry's rules for handling livestock in the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic. WIth a bit of help from a superior officer, he's off the duty roster and heading for Swansea with his fiance, Bronwen. The couple visits both sets of parents, starting wtih Evan's mother, an overly concerned soul who sends her love through her cooking.
Coincidentally, Tony Mancini is arrested for the murder of a young lady from Swansea. Tony already served time for shooting Evan's father, which he claimed was accidental. Evan begins to wonder if Tony really did murder Allison and, going out on a limb, begins to investigate.
Evan's investigation keeps the pages turning. Bronwen gets involved because she looks young and young people will talk to her like an equal. The ending is a little disappointing, as the motive seems to echo other novels of recent years.
And it's not too hard to guess the ending.
As usual, Bowen serves up vivid descriptions of Wales and sets a lively pace. However, by moving the action south, we lose some local village charm. And the horror of complying with requirements to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease casts a disturbing shadow on an otherwise light-hearted novel. Then again, in real life, this disease cast a shadow on this otherwise delightful world.
Mild Well-Told Mystery.......2003-05-18
An entertaining mystery set in Wales, as gently witty as its title. Constable Evan Evans returns to Swansea on holiday in order to introduce his finacee, Bronwen, to his widowed mother. He finds that the ex-con who murdered his policeman father five years earlier has been arrested for the rape-murder of the daughter of a prominent local factory owner. Evans arranges to interview the accused, Tony Mancini, in jail and becomes convinced that he is innocent of the girl's death. Evan feels (unlikely as that may seem)duty-bound to pursue the real killer and exonerate Mancini.
The average reader may have identified the murderer and motive long before Constable Evans does, but Rhy Bowne keeps us entertained by humorous subplots: his mother's prickly personality, Bronwen's snobbish parents, an ex-girlfriend, and a refugee lamb. There is little violence, but enough suspense to keep the pages turning.
strong cerebral who-done-it.......2003-03-02
Evan Evans grew up in South Wales, but fits in fine in the North Wales town of Llanfair as the townsfolk look upon him as one of their own. That situation changes dramatically when he's ordered to assist the Ministry of Agriculture workers about to destroy the farmers' sheep in an effort to stop the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The villagers feel that Evan should push the government to test for the disease before any animal is destroyed.
The constable decides to escape the mess by traveling with his fiancée Bronwen to meet her parents and his mom. When they reach Swansea they learn that Tony Mancino is believed to have raped and killed the daughter of a powerful big shot in the community. If he is convicted he will get life. Tony killed Evan's father. Evan talks with Tony in an effort to find closure about his father's death but he comes away from the encounter convinced the thug is innocent of this crime. After wrestling with his conscience, he decides to search for the real killer, knowing that he will incur the wrath of his mother, the police and the townsfolk, all of who want to see Tony locked away for life.
Readers who like a bloodless cerebral who-done-it that captures the essence of Wales will want to read Evan Only Knows. The protagonist believes in immediate cause and effect justice even if it means helping his father's killer gain his freedom. Rhys Bowen is a master at characterizations, so much so that readers will feel as if they really know the people of Swansea. British police procedurals don't get better than this.

Well, the excerpt sure left me wanting more...........2006-04-28
There is something more to this than you will find in your average run-of-the-mill adventure story. It is very descriptive, but does not skimp on the action! Nice work!
Fantasy Adventure for Everyone!.......2003-05-09
I must admit that at first, the title led me to believe this was a book of poetry, best appreciated by women. Was I ever wrong! This is a very well written, fast paced adventure in the tradition of Lord of the Rings. The battle of Good vs. Evil is interlaced with love, friendship, and sacrifice is told with rich descriptions and colorful locales. Although the exotic and unusual names may take some getting used to, the reader is quickly drawn in, and immersed in a world that is both frighteningly beautiful, and extraordinarily intriguing. Definitely recommended to one and all.
READ IT!.......2003-02-24
As a writer, I highly recommend this book! The author is one of my dear, good friends, and she did a capital job! The characters are interesting, and they have real emotions! The settings are pretty cool too! Give it a read!
It was cool!.......2003-02-24
As a writer myself, I think it was quite the mark of a budding author! Give it a read! She has some more books coming along, I hope, and they will keep getting better! So if you want to read those you'd better read this, or you'll be in the dark!

Sugar Junkies Unite .......2007-01-24
This book gives you a great understanding of the way our food cravings work. And if, like me, you thought they were just your body asking for what it needs, you are in for a rude awakening!
I was able to cut sugar out of my diet after reading this and attained my ideal weight with almost no effort. Its been a great experience, and one I recommend highly to everyone who is interested in what they eat.
Outstanding Book in the Field of Health and Diet.......2004-06-06
I just finished reading this book and I literally could not put it down. Having read health books for over 30 years, I expected the usual rearrangement of things I already know. However, from the first page, this book drew me in and made sense of health and diet like nothing I have ever read. So now I am writing my very first book review and I am going to the store today to get what I need to eat for balance, energy and weight control. I have no doubt that it is the program that will work for me. Moreover, it seems so simple and do-able that I am excited to get started.
The other thing I am going to do today is order a gift copy for each of my adult children so that their families can benefit from this valuable information. I want them to know how easily they can enhance their lives with healthy food as presented by Joshua Rosenthal and Tom Monte. Thank you, Mr. Rosenthal, for sharing your life's work in such an appealing and refreshing way!
A Holistic View of Food, Nutrition, and Energy.......2003-10-17
This book gave me answers to nutrition questions that had plagued me for years. WHY did I crave sweets at night? WHY did I crash at 3:00 pm every day and head for the vending machine? WHY wasn't I losing weight even though I was cutting calories and trying so many different diets?
Joshua's book is very different than other "nutrition" books in that he assumes the readers are intelligent and can figure things out for themselves... with a bit of gentle guidance along the way. The book doesn't present one diet as THE DIET that must be followed... or else! Instead, it explains the way food affects us - our mood, our energy, our cravings, our weight. Then it helps readers figure out what will work best for them, personally. It's a refreshing change from the dogmatic slant of most nutrition books.
I particularly love the chapter which talks about the Energy Balance solution itself, a simple formula for health. It's so beautiful in its simplicity! It doesn't require fancy herbal formulas or expensive supplements to be taken. It requires simple, whole foods and lots of love and self-care.
The part that was most unique to me was the concept of primary foods. Joshua explains hows how primary foods - fitness, career, spirituality, and relationships - affect our health just as much as food does. It's a connection that I intuitively knew, deep down in my heart, but didn't actually recognize until I read this book.
As a holistic health counselor, I use the simple - yet powerful - food and "primary food" concepts in this book as the basis of my healing programs. This is the first book I give to my clients, because we then have a common language around nutrition, energy and healing.
Not Just a Diet, But a Way of LIFE ! ..........2003-09-30
The revolutionary approach of The Energy Balance Diet, and Joshua Rosenthal's unique concept of achieving wellbeing and balance within one's life through integration of mind, body and spirit, have been my way of life for many months.
This practical, gradual and safe dietary plan has helped me and my family incorporate healthy food choices and subtle lifestyle changes into our way of life, without feelings of deprivation and frustration, as many other diets have done in the past. We have achieved greater health, higher energy levels, love of life and deeper, more fulfilling relationships.
Unlike so many diet books which I have read, the Energy Balance Diet book is the only one which sheds light on the importance of integrating "Primary Foods" into our daily menus. Foods which often times are more fulfilling than real food. 'Foods' like love, satisfying careers, creativity, physical activity, spirituality, self-expression, friendships, fun, sex!
Realizing how lack of primary foods could create a void in our lives and compromise our mental and physical health was revolutionary to me. The book helped me get clearer on which steps I should take toward achieving a more balanced life and optimal health.
I think the time has come for more people to try a book that offers not only a diet but a whole way of life !
Exceptional book.......2003-01-20
This is an exceptional book.
It's rare to find an author in the nutrition field
that looks at all sides of the debate
and offers an easily followable, non dogmatic diet.
The book, and the school run by the author - Institute for Integrative Nutrition - are ground-breaking.
Joshua is truly ahead of his time, and I highly recommend this book. The principles and recipes in it have really helped me balance out my blood sugar and have more consistent energy throughout the day.

This Book is full of Treasures.......2001-09-13
This book is a treasure and lives up to it's name.
I have tried many of the recipes that are included in this book and all of them have been easy to prepare and fun. The rose petal jelly was very easy and was a big hit at my office party. I used the recipes on making herbal vinigers to make Christmas Presents.
The craft ideas are not impossible. I liked all the ideas for wedding using herbs/flowers. How very nice. The nosegays, wreaths, and other crafts were lovely.
There was a wealth of information regarding uses of herbs, recipes, garden plans, crafts, meaning of herbs, storing herbs, drying herbs, and other ideas.
I find that I turn to this book many times when looking for Christmas ideas, craft bazaar ideas, information regarding herbs etc.
I am glad I have this book on my shelves.
Herbal Crafts of every kind for every occasion.......1999-10-28
So much to do so little time. This is one of the most inspiring herb books ever written. The basic idea of Herbal Treasures is to provide activities centered around both the garden and the time of year. Each month is given its own chapter that is chock full of a myriad of suggestions for herbally fun things to do for that month. For instance, June is for brides. Ms. Shaudy's provides everything from wedding gardens to wedding punch, all laced with the rich tradition of herbs. There are so many crafts and recipes that it takes more than a year for most of us to do them all. Herbal Treasures is a wonderful warm book you won't want to put down. Herbal Treasures is the continuation of Ms. Shaudy's previous work The Pleasure of Herbs. The Pleasure of Herbs is also a month to month compendium overflowing with creative herbal excitement.
One of my favorite books.......1999-01-08
This is a very enjoyable book. If you like crafts, gardening, cooking and just enjoyable reading I'm sure you will find this book to be on your favorite list. I enjoyed reading about her daughters wedding preparation.
Wonderful book........1997-06-25
This is one book that I am constantly getting into, rain or shine, cold weather and hot. Its a great book just to read and look at, not because of pictures, but just for the recipes, ideas, suggestions and general information. Its simple to use and its not full of techincal jargon that you have to look up constantly to understand what she is talking about. I highly suggest for anyone who cooks, wants gift ideas, or for any other reason

XTC Song Stories, a good read.......2005-07-04
It helps being a convert or fanatic of this Swindon-based pop-rock group who defies most classfications, but even the less-motivated reader will find plenty to chuckle about in this book. Written in a very breezy, readable style the author tells us bits about the group's catalogue of songs, dating back to the late 70's when XTC was a punk-prototype and New Wave band replete with synth and keyboard special effects. Of course, XTC is still alive and well and recording pop classics, but they're retired, somewhat, and still living in their hometown of Swindon in England. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
"Pastoral Punks", corporate showdowns & rubber sharks.......2003-09-08
There's nothing lurid or scandalous about the band XTC, or its members Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding and Dave Gregory, who unspool a 25-year and counting history together in this long-overdue "musical biography". Author Neville Farmer places interviews with his subjects into a chronological order from the band's formation at the dawn of punk, then letting them "take over" as co-authors, telling jokes, anecdotes and personal musings on the writing and recording of each and every song in their catalog. As it progresses and more is revealed of the band through its music, it's a good idea to have some of the records handy as a tour guide of sorts. And though it's not loaded with your typical "Behind The Music" style exposes of a "band who had it all and lost it all", it does have its share of backstage drama as the band is cheated by record companies and double-dealing managers, the lead singer suffers a bout with nervous exhaustion that changes the course of the band's history forever and an unprecedented artist vs. commerce showdown results in a strike where XTC refused to record ANY music for a solid decade! It's also a bittersweet farewell to longtime guitarist Dave Gregory, who split with the band after surviving all this and more over artistic differences. So, if you're already a fan of this incredibly underrated band, or you've never heard of them, but are interested in a great "David and Goliath" story (similiar to the Wilco film, "I am trying to break your heart") I could not recommend this more wholeheartedly.
Complete, but not.......2002-04-25
XTC has a large catalogue, and all of it is documented here pretty thoroughly;however, since it's an "authorized" biography, it of course downplays bad business moves, and almost ignores personal political interworkings, in favor of accentuating musical sophistication and "good clean fun." It has song stories, and Andy's subconscious execution of a simple refusal to tour anymore. It also has a controlled feel, which makes you want to read all the parts edited out more than the page in front of you! This is the quality that made me prefer Chalkhills and Children.
Wonderful to see the story attempted but limited details........1999-10-06
I support any effort of XTC and was happy to see this come out tied somewhat to the Apple Venus cd. Encouraged to see the band participated in the interviews rather than lame 3rd hand accounts. But I was looking for so much more detail--how they write, how the tracks really came together. Many people credit XTC with laying the production style into place that others copied and influenced generations of later bands and I really wanted to see that addressed--it didn't. The departure of Terry Chambers was handled as a non-event and he seemed to be one of postpunks most important drummers and a hugely important part of the Black Sea and English Settlement sound--he left and the sound changed (not in a bad way) why didn't this get discussed? Very little insight from Dave G. on how the complex guitar tracks are built. The elements besides lyrics seemed ignored; I understand somewhat. Some people do come to XTC for more than their genius wordplay though.
Interesting book only scratches the surface of xtc.......1998-11-12
Since reading a review of this in Q magazine, I had been eagerly anticipating this book on XTC. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. While the book doesn't pretend to be comphrensive, it lacks an sort of objectivity and analysis from Farmer. Altogether, it isn't a bad place to learn about the band if your a neophyte, but, for those of us who have been faithful for many years, it could have used a little bit more insight on the part of the author and the artists.
