Book Description
Josey Wales was the most wanted man in Texas. His wife and child had been lost to pre-civil War destruction and, like Jesse James and other young farmers, he joined the guerrilla soldiers of Missourimen with no cause but survival and no purpose but revenge.
Josey Wales and his Cherokee friend, Lone Watie, set out for the West through the dangerous Camanchero territory. Hiding by day, traveling by night, they are joined by an Indian woman named Little Moonlight, and rescue an old woman and her granddaughter from their besieged wagon. The five of them travel toward Texas and win through brash and honest violence, a chance for a new way of life.

The real thing........2007-08-13
Forrest Carter did a great job depicting the violence of the post-civil war era. Especially in the South Central part of the country that was never written about in our history books. A very descriptive representation of how things really were. No wonder Clint Eastwood bought the rights to the book for his movie.

This drunken nut could write.......2007-07-03
Did Forrest Carter have character flaws? Well so did Ricard Wagner.
These are the best two westerns I've ever read. For all his faults, Carter could write.
I loved the movie, but the book was far better.
Better than the movie!.......2007-03-16
Great story. Great action. Much grittier than the movie, this book doesn't pull punches when it comes to blood-lettin' the in the finest traditions of the Missouri guerilla-outlaw turned Texan. The characters are well-developed and the "code" underlying Wales' and Lone Watie's partnership is richly detailed. Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey novels are for politically correct sissies. This book and its two novels tell it like it really was. If you like westerns, you'll find this to be one of the best you've ever read!
The Best.......2006-07-23
This is absolutely fantastic western fiction. The struggle of a post-war confederate guerrilla moves with great speed and energy. It is easy to understand why Clint Eastwood tried to capture this on film, but (no surprise) the book is much better. Only one other western on my Top Ten Books list: The Virginian. Carter's book is THAT good.
THE MOVIE AND THE BOOK.......2006-03-18
I READ BOTH BOOKS AS SOON AS I GOT IT. IF FOUND BOTH BOOKS VERY EASY TO READ AND VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO LIKES REALISTIC WESTERN / REAL LIFE TYPE STORIES.
EXCELLENT READ.

Another Solid Entry.......2006-08-30
Cadfael is out and about again, this time in the company of his favorite Brother, Mark, and the story is free, except incidentally, of the Maud/Stephen eternal wrangle for the crown. Summer of the Danes brings the oft mentioned Owain Gwynedd to the fore along with his ambitious, untrustworthy and terribly flawed younger brother Cadwaladr in an intricate tale involving the Danes, who seem to comport themselves rather well given all bad press they usually come in for. The mystery is minor, romance flourishes and, while Cadfael plays his part, he's not the story, alas. Neither is Mark who seems a bit odd in this one. On his way to a sainted greatness no doubt. While you may wonder, as I oft have done, why books of this series are called medieval novels of suspense, rest assured that Peter's ability to limn a character, evoke a time, and place you in the scene are rarely equaled. We must, therefore, with good grace, allow Cadfael to play second fiddle from time to time and tolerate her unrelenting devotion to romance. Small price to pay for a satisfying series.
Strained relations.......2006-05-16
This 18th chronicle of Brother Cadfael has less about him and more about history. In fact, he really only appears at the beginning and at the ending and doesn't have any hand at all in the solving of crimes. The story springs from the tempestuous relationship between Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Wales and Cadwaladr, his treacherous and headstrong younger brother. The brothers have had no peace between them for years as Cadwaladr is forever plotting to seize power for himself, being beaten at this game by his brother and then counting on the strong family ties that exist in all Welshmen, to be forgiven and taken back into the fold. This time, he has gone too far however, and has hired Danish mercenaries to attack Owain's troops. These Danes have been settled in Ireland for generations (a fact I did not know) and were just as much Irish as Danish and were Christian to boot! It was an interesting read for the historical contents alone, even if Cadfael scarcely appeared.
not quite as good as the rest of the series.......2006-03-15
The first 50 pages are mostly travelogue, and the next 50 pages are mostly set-up. The story doesn't really take off until around page 115. Once it gets going, it's good, but I found myself skimming huge paragraphs of bucolic description in the beginning. It's worth reading if you're working your way through the series, but if you're looking for an introduction to the Cadfael series, don't start with this book.
The Summer of the Danes.......2004-04-15
I found this a marvelous mystery, though, as in most of this author's mysteries, the mystery is not important. The important thing is the words, the well-developed characters, and the lack of stereotypical characters.
I have a question for the person who said that all Peter's heroes were tall, blond, and muscular. I would like to ask how many he has read, as it is actually rare that the heroes are blond. Take a look at Hugh Beringar, Torold Blund and Brother Cadfael himself for some examples! And in the Hermit of Eyton Forest, the protagonist is a child with many childish characteristics.
The books are very good in general, though there are one or two that are not up to par. This is not one of her best, however, so you might try A Morbid Taste for Bones or One Corpse Too Many, which are both very good. I recommend this series to anyone who likes medieval mysteries!
Peters' Cadfael takes on a Danish role!.......2000-05-05
It is not the summer of his discontent, washed by the sun of Yorke; however, it is the season for another Cadfael adventure and mystery! And Ellis Peters, in her usual intriguing way, presents us with her 18th Brother Cadfael episode in "The Summer of the Danes."
The year is 1144--the civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud still rages on--and Brother Cadfael is called upon to be an interpreter to the Welsh village of Saint Asaph. Cadfael is Welsh born and he welcomes the journey to his homeland as a pleasant break from his duties as a brother at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury.
As it turns out--and naturally, as this is an Ellis Peters mystery!--a Danish fleet is sighted along the coast of Wales, a real menace, indeed. Then a young girl goes missing. Then a body is found. And Cadfael is off and running.
So is the reader! Having read all the Brother Cadfael series, I found this to be one of my favorites. Peters wastes no time in developing her story and does not hesitate to flavor her plot with plenty of Welsh history and lore. Will the Danes invade? Will the murderer be brought to justice? Cadfael's expertise, once again, proves to be essential in the resolution of the crimes.
Cadfael is the former crusader now turned monk who, while not solving murder cases, works as the Abbey's herbalist and is known throughout the area for his skills in medicine. The "Sunday Express" writes: "Cadfael...springs to life in her books, which are novels with depth. He is a man of warmth, humanity and engaging nosiness."
Do not be misled by the British TV series of the Cadfael stories. While on the surface they are quite adequate (Derek Jacobi is an ideal Cadfael), the 50-minute recounting of any of Peters' books does not do justice to the novel, which is a pity, for there are great gaps of (mis)understanding that simply cannot be supplied in such short time. Stay with the books! They are well-worth the read. Cadfael is a character worth knowing!

this book was okay.......2002-07-29
when a group of children are kidnapped, xena and gabrielle join
in the search to find them. they are joined by attlanta, who is
a goddess who cannot be defeated. but the enemies that have the
children have other ideals for the 2 fierecest women known in
ancient greece. a decent read for all xena fans.
A pretty good book, but............2002-07-09
This was a pretty good book, but could have been better. The character of Atalanta was already established in Hercules: The Legendary Journies and I had that character in mind when I read it. The Atalanta in the book and the Atalanta in Hercules were two totally different people (the one in the book is a complete jerk!) and that is one of the reasons I didn't like it. Also, the way Gabrielle was acting, too many "Ooohs" and "Aaahhhss". I can actually say I have never seen Gabrielle bite her fist over anything.
I know how hard it is to write about established characters, it's not easy at all. All in all the author did a pretty good job.
Things could be worse . . . ........2001-02-02
Personnally I found this book entertaining enough to read several times. I admit that characters are not completely true to form. However I suggest an experiment: Write a story about Xena. See how true-to-form perfect your characters are. The story is still a good read.
The plot is a little plain and the fights aren't wondurously developed. Use your imagination to fill in the blanks. It is more fun.
hmmmm..........2000-03-31
Hmmmm... I'm having a hard time trying to decide what to say about this book. It's definitely a fun brain-vacation -- I will say that. I didn't mind the inaccurate Greek mythology that one other reviewer pointed out -- I mean, come on! When has Xena EVER been true to mythology! What really irked me about this book was the portrayal of Gabrielle. Yeah, I realize this book was written waaaay back when Gab was younger, more eager... but she is treated like a pre-pubescent giggly little teenybopper for crying out loud! When are they ever going to write some Xena novels for fans older than twelve!
Not as good as Empty Throne, but still a must read.......2000-03-02
This book was awesome! The riddles were fun, and the characters were put on a very realistic level. While I enjoy The Empty Throne better, this is definently still a classic Xena novel.

The Rudhyars live on through their unique writings/teachings........2007-03-09
Dane Rudhyar's legacy of metaphysical, insightful astrological work lives on! This offering is practical, irreplacable and timeless, even as its uses involve the understanding of time itself through the Sun/Moon relationship. All temporal existence holds its story via a birth time, an arising "self" which for a time lives and grows on this plane of existence, and then includes a release of the personality & soul from the very identity its own birth story describes. This cyclical mystery affects all of creation from the birth of an idea or nation-state, to the nuanced unfoldment of an individual human consciousness, as expressed via the natal & progressed horoscope. Leyla Rael Rudhyar also contributes to this understanding in her segment of the book. The Self further grows through the various stages of prescribed life events mirrored by interconnected cycles of increase and decrease. This knowledge is like a life-giving elixir for humankind, as we all need reflection and more accurate orientation of perception, to be free of our often self-imposed suffering, through narrow understanding and "wrong identification" as the body itself. The body/personality is just the beginning of our story. The personality/ego vehicle, is like a "skin-car", which will fall away when a particular phase of existence has fulfilled its life-story, however short or long, on this road of life. The Rudhyars remind us that our immortal soul is connected to all of life, so we can step back and view our challenges in the broader and deeper context of this larger unfolding cycle.
In anchoring our understanding of our own (and our friend's, family members or client's) challenges to grow beyond the limits of egoic conditions, we gain an expanded viewpoint that naturally includes compassionate acceptance of each human's unique timing, tasks & talents. We are not what we appear to be in the superficial hold of current cultural projections. We are immortal souls in passage--ever growing and changing and becoming truer to our innate oneness with divine source. The Rudhyars demarcate these rites of passage using the solar-lunation cycles to orient and guide us as we grow through & observe the necessary states of existence we must experience fully to awaken to our truer nature. I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone curious about the timing of the unfolding events in their own or another's life/death process. Few books hold such treasures as these, and I am grateful that this material is still in print. I hope it continues as long as humans investigate the nature of existence and the challenges of daily life and true identity.
Personality Basics from the Master.......2004-09-26
First published under the title, "The Moon, the Cycles and Fortunes of Life", this book is a helpful addition to any astrology collection.
The relationship of the sun and moon in one's chart is the very basis of one's personality.
A valuable section is included on the Parts of Fortune and Spirit, with detailed information on their definitions. The Part of Fortune through the signs and houses is a good reference
for the beginning or intermediate student, and the lunation phases are discussed in relation to the other planets.
Discover how the moon is the "weaver" shuttling between the inner and outer planets of our solar system! Mr. Rudhyar uses the solar chart (sunrise) to explain the effects of the other planets upon the moon and upon one's creative expression and personal life.
And just what is your "lunation birthday"? Find out in The Lunation Cycle, by one of the very best and innovative astrologers ever.
Yep, I can highly recommend this book!
Ground-breaking, became a standard for astrological theory.......1999-04-19
This book is a basic introduction to the theory of astrological cycles. It is a basic reader for anyone who is interested in the new astrology called 'Humanistic Astrology'. The author's contributions to the theory and practice of astrology have resulted in astrology being updated to modern times by incorporating new concepts from analytical, depth and transpersonal psychology. The ancient concepts of 'square' and 'opposition' have been redefined as events that occur in every cycle--whose purpose is to build structures (relationships) from the new moon beginning to the full moon culmination and back again to the next new moon. By identifying the personality type that we are most readily understand emotionally, The Lunation Cycle provides guidance for the reader to reassess their horoscope in the light of concepts that empower one to validate their own individual, emotional perspective on life. It goes further to redefine the Part of Fortune and discusses the progressed lunation cycle.
One of the best book by Rudhyar.......1998-11-02
I don't know if lunation technique is popular in modern astrologers or not since I am just enjoying astrology for myself. But this technique Rudhyar reveals in this difinite work really works. Along with his another difinite work, "Astrological Mandala", this book will be a very good spiritual navigator for your life, I believe.

Book Description
An overview of the development of house and home, from its beginnings in the caves of early man through the variety of structures that have evolved, influenced by climate and materials but also by culture, custom, and religious beliefs. Mr. Gardiner succeeds in explaining why, from being merely a shelter, the house has come to express ideas about space, aesthetics, customs, and culture. Gardiner is most readable, unpretentiously scholarly, and he moves through time with confidence and sound architectural judgement. --Eric Lyons, Spectator

Book Description
Many musicians sing about heartache, despair, and confusion, but few have experienced those feelings more intensely than James Taylor, who rose from a childhood of privilege as the son of an affluent medical school dean to become a modern-day troubadour and pop superstar.
When he was seventeen years old, his demons led him to a Massachusetts mental institution where he confronted them the only way he knew how, by writing his first songs. Thirty years later, Taylor's songs are among the most popular in the annals of music, but the demons are still with him.
But unlike many of his contemporaries who faced a similar struggle, Taylor managed to emerge as an inspirational figure. Fire and Rain traces this remarkable path, including his troubled marriage to pop star Carly Simon and the premature alcoholism-related death of his brother: Taylor's ten-month stay in the exclusive private psychiatric institution where he finished high school; His self-imposed exile to England where he submitted some of his music to the Beatles' Apple Records, which signed him to his first record contract in 1968. Paul McCartney mentored Taylor's early career; The story behind his second album, Sweet Baby James, which contained the song "Fire and Rain" about the hopelessness of mental illness and suicide; As Taylor's fame increased, so did his problems with heroin, alcohol, and mental illness. In the seventies, the singer nearly fell over the edge many times.
Customer Reviews:
A Bit Too Reverential.......2007-08-16
Though there is plenty here about Taylor's well known drug addiction and his tempestuous marriage to Carly Simon, this rock bio still comes off as too fawning. It would have benefited from better sources. Taylor or Simon do not appear to have been interviewed, nor was producer Peter Asher. Instead, we read a lot of boring quotes from fans about how great James Taylor is.
The James Taylor Story? Not!.......2006-05-30
This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I hesitate to even put my two cents in because I don't want to encourage anyone else to buy this trash- even out of morbid curiosity- but- this is the stuff of supermarket tabloids- if you really want to gain insight into the life and work of James Taylor- look elsewhere. Halperin can't write and his "quotes" are so obviously made up this "bio" doesn't even pass the straight face test.I feel like I should apologize to Taylor and his family for even reading it. Absolute trash- don't waste you time and money.
The best music book of the last 10 years.......2004-08-12
I cannot express how important and entertaining this book really is. Ian Halperin is a great storyteller, encompassing Taylor's early struggles to his present glory. I have read books about Dylan, Mitchell, Young and Jagger - nothing compares to this tome. A must read for every music fan of the 70s to present.
James Taylor Rules.......2004-01-21
The best tribute that can be paid to any artist is a tribute - that's what this bio is. My only concern was that the author went too out of his way to praise Taylor. I would have like to know more about some of his demons. The book reads more like a tribute. Otherwise, there are many interesting facts about the life and times of one of the greatest artists to emerge from the late sixties and early seventies.
I enjoyed it!.......2004-01-20
Perhaps more of the seventies and eighties should have been featured. But the early part of JT's life is well written. I was referred by a friend to read Fire and Rain. It did not disappoint. I used to live in North Carolina. Thoughts of my childhood sprung to my mind by reading this book. Great memories - great music. This book proves how valuable an icon JT is to the music industry. And, convincingly, the author portrays his life how he overcame lots of demons to become one of music's most notable stars - ever!
