Let that be the reason I keep reading.......2007-10-01
This was the first book I read of Vickie and I must say I enjoyed it. It started me saying Let That Be The Reason all time and then some of my friends followed so needless to say she will have you doing the same! However it starts a little slow but picks up quickly. I would pick up this author again!
OKAY NEXT.......2007-06-14
GOTTA BE HONEST THIS BOOK WAS VERY MEDIOKER FOR ME BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME.LET THIS BE THE REASON YOU DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!
Let That Be The Reason Ms. Stringer Works on her writing..............2006-09-24
I am mad because this book was so hyped up. Let That Be The Reason is the story of Pamela Xavier b.k.a. Carmen. After being left to dry in the streets by her only lover, baby's father, and sole provider Chino, Pam takes her life into her own hands. Chino took everything from her including her pride when he gave away her 50,000 hait salon. After doing a short stint as a call girl, she starts her own escort service and changes her name to Carmen. Then greed set in and she got into the dope game. "Carmen" was doing it big in the streets--so big she started taking food out of Chino's mouth. Will they get back together? How will Carmen get out of this street life? You have to cop the book. I had more pleasure reading he afterword then I did the book. I felt that the story wasn't developed enough but I do commend Ms. Stringer for her compelling words at the end.
This was a Very good book.......2006-08-25
This book had me bout to go out and open up my own escort business. Vickie you did the damn thing.. I was definetly feeling this one. This book shows you that some females go harder than most males. You was doing it girl!
It was OK.......2006-06-28
Not on of the best books I've read but OK for a debut (I guess),I felt "Carmen" was always dwelling on her and Chino's relationship (oh my Chino this, my Chino that), whereas in real life she should've been pissed he left her out to dry. Yet she was trusting of him and damn near everyone on the book.

Book Description
In a certain rambling country house packed with bitter, quarrelling relatives, Gregory Matthews, the head of the caboodle, is found dead. Imperious Aunt Harriet blames it on the roast duck he ate for supper - she warned him about his blood pressure! But the more likely cause seems to be nicotine poisoning. It falls on the broad shoulders of Superintendent Hannasyde to solve another deadly enigma.

Murder by Deception.......2007-07-26
"Behold, Here's Poison" by Georgette Heyer is a story that lingers in the mind. I read this book many years ago, but had the wrong author in mind when searching for it to reread. It was a delight to rediscover this clever story with a murder weapon I've never seen used in another story.
Her characters dance from the opening page as real people we'd never meet except between the covers of a book. This is the second appearance of Supertindent Hannasyde as he struggles to deal with vivid "dingbats" and less than helpful relatives who will do their dam-est to protect the family name and foul his investigation. Randall Matthews is so finely drawn he is best described by his beloved as a "amiable viper."
A comic read, which will find a place on your shelf of "keepers," if for no other reason than to study the exquisite art of the English verbal insult.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."
not one of Heyer's better efforts.......2006-05-25
I believe Georgette Heyer was hoping to make the cousin Randall an attractive bad boy a la Johnny Depp; instead, he comes off as simply repugnant, like Philip Seymour Hoffman in the indie film "Happiness." Some of the other characters are simply caricatures. As others have mentioned, Heyer is tight-fisted with the clues, although the set-up is a clever one.
Detective Inspector Hannasyde is an amiable and clever fellow, but readers would do better to instead read "The Unfinished Clue," which is a better mystery with more likable characters.
Heyer is always a great bet!.......2002-08-17
Although she cannot be called a great mystery plotter (the murderer is highly unlikely and there is a dire lack of clues), her characters make up for any defects. The lovely dispicable Randall, is hilarious one of my favorite Heyer unheroes. I prefer her Regencies but the mysteries are highly palatable as well.
Bet You Can't Guess!.......2000-09-23
The plot is not great, but the other qualities in the book make up for this deficiency. Her characters are charming and well-developed, and you'd never guess who the murderer is - although that may be because it's so unlikely. One of my favourite Heyer mysteries, along with Why Shoot A Butler and The Unfinished Clue. If you liked Heyer's mysteries, you could also try Mary Stewart, who writes suspense/romance as well.
a fun to read mystery.......2000-03-27
Although Georgette Heyer is primarely known for her Regency romances, she was also a writer of my classical English mysteries. This one is certainly her best. Although the plot is not exactly brilliant (hence only 4 stars) the characters are up to her usual standards, esp as the odious hero Randall who you love to hate and hate to love. Very entertaining, not only for Heyer's many fans...

American Summertime.......2007-07-22
Paul Cornell wrote the single best episode of Doctor Who in the entire decades-long history of the program with the two-part episode "Human Nature / the Family of Blood." He's also one of the best of the writers to emerge from the Virgin Books line of Doctor Who novels, and is proving to be an accomplished comic book writer with his recent work for Marvel. British Summertime is one of his two "mainstream" science fiction novels, and it's an absolutely brilliant work. I'm glad to see it making it's US debut now and I hope that US readers are about to discover what a fantastic writer Paul is.
A Favorite.......2007-02-06
I came across this book by chance at a used bookstore. I read the description on the back--time travel, angels, religion...it seemed interesting, if a bit scattered. I paid maybe $4 for it, and had it for a year before I actually read it.
Once I got past the first few chapters, I was hooked--this book is complicated, and fast-paced. The characters are strong but the story is stronger. I am a fan of modern fantasy and sci-fi that doesn't resemble star trek. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. If you like his imagination and complex storylines, like American Gods or Anansi Boys, you will be blown away by this book. It is even more imaginative, even more complex.
This isn't a light read, it takes some getting used to in the beginning, but it all comes together later on. Lots of powerful images, and a touching/tragic love story woven into it as well. I would recommend this to anyone who likes an expansive, surprising story. It does not dissapoint.
Book Description
Marijuana is the world's most popular illicit drug, with hundreds of millions of regular users worldwide. One in three Americans has smoked pot at least once. The Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that Americans smoke five million pounds of marijuana each year. And yet marijuana remains largely misunderstood by both its advocates and its detractors. To some, marijuana is an insidious "stepping-stone" drug, enticing the inexperienced and paving the way to the inevitable abuse of harder drugs. To others, medical marijuana is an organic means of easing the discomfort or stimulating the appetite of the gravely ill. Others still view marijuana, like alcohol, as a largely harmless indulgence, dangerous only when used immoderately. All sides of the debate have appropriated the scientific evidence on marijuana to satisfy their claims. What then are we to make of these conflicting portrayals of a drug with historical origins dating back to 8,000 B.C.? Understanding Marijuana examines the biological, psychological, and societal impact of this controversial substance. What are the effects, for mind and body, of long-term use? Are smokers of marijuana more likely than non-users to abuse cocaine and heroine? What effect has the increasing potency of marijuana in recent years had on users and on use? Does our current legal policy toward marijuana make sense? Earleywine separates science from opinion to show how marijuana defies easy dichotomies. Tracing the medical and political debates surrounding marijuana in a balanced, objective fashion, this book will be the definitive primer on our most controversial and widely used illicit substance.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and Entertaining.......2007-09-23
This book is perfect for anyone wanting to understand this controversial subject. It provides a very scientific look into many long-standing myths associated with the plant and drops humorous comments along the way.
Understanding Marijuana through the long years of dedicated research of Dr Mitchell Earleywine........2007-09-07
Dr. Earlywine's book "Understanding Marijuana" explains the uses of marijuana on a level that can be understood by all readers. Remaining unbiased, he combines the political aspect to the benefits of decriminalization the substance as well as the harmful effects and beneficial uses. The long term research becomes clear as the author takes you into a world not clearly understood by most in everyday society. This book comes highly recommended to those who can benefit from Dr. Earleywine's years of dedicated research into the variations of the legalization of marijuana and in my opinion, the end of the tireless "war on drugs".
Awesome Overview.......2007-06-09
I first experienced pot at age 16 and soon learned that what little I was told was NOT TRUE. This book lays it out in all its splendor. It is not a harmless drug- but it is the next best thing. The pharmacology section was very useful as it explained the way THC is produced and broken down by the plant. On the way up to THC Cannabidiol is produced. Cannabinol is produced as the plant starts to break down. The medical section is fabulous. I was not aware of its medical applications fully until I became a Medical Assisting Student and was placed as an intern in a Multiple Sclerosis practice. This drug does wonders for them! Few knew about it. More need to learn about it. That and I just love the look of those leaves! They are Serrated!!
Enlightening.......2007-03-13
Yep. Another book that's packed full of research to support this incredible little herb. SIGH! We really need to get "with it" and make this available for health and well being for our people and our planet.
An Excellent resource of factual information.......2007-01-23
With all of the misinformation circulating about cannabis over the last 70 years its nice to have a refreshing, scholarly, intelligent review of the subject. I wish everybody in the country who had anything to do with the War on Drugs - from both sides of the debate, would stop bantering about unsupported nonsense and old cliches about that vegetation and look at the evidence, the history, and see the nonsense that is currently floating unabashedly about on that subject. Thanks Dr. Earlywine for your significant effort to try to get out the facts. Del

While comic books trace their origins to the late 19th century, Superman, who debuted in 1938's Action Comics #1, is virtually synonymous with the medium. Yet, as Superman, the Complete History shows, the Man of Steel has also made a lasting impact in comic strips, film, toys, TV, radio, and even on Broadway. In this beautifully composed volume, Les Daniels collects rare and never-before-seen early artwork by Superman's teenage creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (including a two-page doodle from 1936 featuring early Superman costume designs), and he chronicles the evolution of the character from an orphan alien comics hero to a complex multimedia icon. Entire pages are devoted to photographs of the various costumes worn by TV and film incarnations, of numerous action figures and related toys, and of movie poster and stills. Several comics stories are also reproduced in their entirety.
Almost as impressive as the stunning art design is Daniels's narrative: covering the 60 years from 1938 to 1998, he collects interviews with several writer-artist teams that detail the changes in the Man of Steel and his relationships with Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luthor, and Perry White. Daniels's examination of the "Death of Superman" story arc, in particular, is a fascinating study of Superman's commercial and archetypal appeal. The final pages preview Superman tales by Barry Windsor-Smith and Alex Ross (whose beautiful painted graphic novel Kingdom Come turned many heads), and the hardback cover holds a special surprise underneath its paper wrap. --Patrick O'Kelley

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful visuals, company-approved history.......2005-10-05
As with Daniels's other comics histories, this is a beautiful coffee table book, thoroughly illustrated and full of much fascinating trivia about the medium. When reading it, though, it's important to remember that the book was fully approved and virtually coproduced by DC Comics, and so basically represents DC's PR department view of its history. For example, it mostly rationalizes or dismisses the company's appalling treatment of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. For history, there are non-corporate approved books that do a much more realistic job. But for beautiful pictures and an overview of the comics themselves, this is great.
COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE GREATEST HERO EVER!.......2005-07-26
He's the first, and greatest superhero ever, the man who not only was faster than a speeding bullet, but more importantly the man who was able to survive the golden age fallout of superhero comics and continue to thrive almost 70 years later. Les Daniels' magnificent book traces the history of Superman from his humble beginnings, to the major marketing franchise it is today. It's the story of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, a couple of young men from Cleveland who putting the ideas for this new and fantastic character down on paper as early as 1933, and then struggled for years to get the feature sold. We see a rare cover, the only page surviving from 1933, after Joe Shuster burned the rest of the pages in frustration. The spotlight reviewer contends that Daniels does not give credit to Siegel and Shuster and even takes stabs at the pair. Nothing could be further from the truth. The book details the pairs drive to get the character sold, and their diligence is well documented by Daniels. It's a tribute to their persistence that Superman is around today. Had they thrown in the towel after their many rejections Superman would never have seen the light of day. I think that pays them high tribute. There's no doubt that DC comics made millions...no billions off Superman and that Siegel and Shuster did not benefit much from this. Unfortunately, the pair, so desperate to get the idea in print, signed away their rights to the character. It may have been cheap on DCs part, no doubt, but creators simply did not own their characters back then.
Daniels goes onto to show how Superman was a smashing success right out of the gate and would go onto conquer virtually every form of media of the day including newspaper strips, animated shorts, movie serials, feature films, radio, TV, and incredible merchandising. Daniels traces Superman's adventures from the enemy-smashing efforts of WWII, to the ridiculous, often silly stories of the 1950's, to Superman's death and eventual resurrection in the 1990's. Daniels traces all those others who were key in making Superman the American Icon he has become, particularly the late Julius Schwartz who basically created the Silver Age of comics and guided superman for years and artists the late Wayne boring the primary superman artist after Shuster and through the mid-1950's, and the late Curt Swan who took over in the mid-1950's and was the primary artist on Superman for the next thirty years.
But the book isn't all about the comic books. We'll see Superman in the great Fleischer cartoons of the 1940's, his early film appearances by Kirk Alyn, and then on TV with George Reeves...Heck there was even a Superman musical in the 1960's. Superman would be re-vitalized in the 1970's when Christopher Reeves played the Man of Steel in four big-screen films before the character would return to TV in the romantic Lois and Clark, and the new look at Clark Kent as a young man in the smash hit "Smallville". Daniels covers it all including the wonderful animated series on WB, and the controversies surrounding Superman's "death" and resurrection and eventual marriage to Lois Lane. Daniels leaves no stone unturned, even providing great photos of vintage and current Superman toys and other collectibles.
Siegel and Shuster are given their proper due for the creation of Superman, but it was an entire host of talented writers, artists, actors, animators, and directors that have turned the character into the legend that he has become. This is a terrific book for any fan of the character. Well-written and researched.
Good overview of Superman's history.......2003-10-13
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in reading about the history of The Man Of Steel in all of his media incarnations (it's a few years old, so misses out on any info on the tv series Smallville). Well written and illustrated, it's a must-have for any fan of Superman.
Hardly the True Story of Superman.......2003-04-28
There is no doubt the comic book industry owes a great debt to Superman, or rather, to Siegel and Shuster who created him, but in his book, Les Daniels frequently looks for ways to minimize, rather than credit, their contribution. DC Comics made millions of dollars on the movies, TV Shows, cartoons, and other merchanising over the decades, while Siegel and Shuster shared in hardly any of it. The most shocking thing now is, this book, written with the cooperation of DC - rather than apologize to the two men, or even express any kind of gratitude, it actually takes stabs at Sigel and Shuster. Rather than simply state the facts regarding to Superman's history, Daniels frequently assails the characters of the two men, claims they took most of their ideas from other places, assigns poor motives to both men, even mentions extra-marital affairs they may or may not have had. The book is supposed to be about Superman, who cares about any of that? Of course Daniels would never turn a critical eye towards DC, who seem to have hired him, it's surprising they still seem to be bitter about two men that made them so much money for the last sixty years. There is no doubt, DC has been the best comic book company when it comes to promoting their characters, but they have also been very lucky in the courts. Not only did they force Superman's creators to relinquish all rights to the character, their lawsuits also managed to force Captain Marvel, a character more popular than Superman at the time, out of business. They claimed they were too much alike, but anyone who knows comics could see their differences. Later, DC took over Captain Marvel and actually began publishing him themselves (!). This story is only touched on briefly here. I give the book two stars because the illustrations are good, but the text deserves one, if even that. Everyone is entitled their opinion, but, in a book like this, people don't want to hear about it, they expect a decent read about the character of Superman. The true history of Superman is really not told here, it actually involves greedy businessmen sitting back and counting their money, while the creators that were the ones to make these characters, end up dying peniless.
A great history of the greatest superhero........2002-10-08
Superman is, without a doubt, one of the most recognizable characters in the world. But how did he reach that point? Les Daniels excellent history of Superman tells that story, and is packed with great pictures and photos as well. A perfect book for comic or pop culture fans. Highly Recommended.

For the intermediate or advanced folder.......2006-01-21
This book has some negatives but also some pros. First the pros: the color photos of the finished projects are quite lovely and there seems to be lots of information. Now the negatives: there are too many dissimilar projects included, no suggestions on making the project your own, projects organized in a stiff and formal manor, instructions feel as if you have to dive right in rather than testing the waters to see if you enjoy the process, no rating system (i.e. beginner, intermediate, challenging) to gage how difficult the project is, and it seems to assume you already are familiar with the technique already. I wanted to like the book and the technique, but it felt like an intermediate or advanced text rather than for a beginner. You might have better luck if you already know the technique.
Great Idea...Poor Implementation.......2003-04-13
This book looks wonderful and the quilts the author has made are beautiful, however the directions for the "origami" are nearly incomprehensible. I have become completely frustrated by the written instructions and the drawings only make sense on the first few steps of each project. An origami duck, which should take 15 minutes to produce, had four adults completely stumped for an hour. I only recommend this book if the author comes with it to explain how the pieces are made. Perhaps a video would be a good solution.

Interesting, but not outstanding.......1997-03-20
Because I am a fan of Amy Grant, I like to read anything written about her. This book gives a good back ground for how the industry of Contempory Christian Music evolved into the big business it is today. However, I sometimes got lost in the details of the different religions and history of the churches. Since it is unauthorized, there wasn't much written that I didn't already know-being a long-time fan. The book does re-inforce her rock-steady faith and love for God. Overall, the book gives a good chronilogical view of how Amy got into the business and made it what it is today
