Fun Victorian Romance.......2007-10-10
This is an interesting romance set "late in the reign of Queen Victoria" and it throws you into the story from the get-go. You first meet Concordia Glade and her young students as they are running away from the burning castle they've been staying in. This is also the moment that Ambrose Wells enters the story. He's investigating the castle and is a little put out that it's burning down but he offers to help Concordia and her four charges. The whys of their residence at the castle is interesting and the two main characters are quite well suited but their attitudes to sex are quite modern.
I loved the way Ambrose received "payment" for his services. He came across as quite an interesting character with lots of depth. The four girls really didn't come across as deep characters, but there is an opening for them to have further adventures.
For it's type it's quite good, and I did enjoy the story and enjoyed the ride, it's only after I finished reading that I started having some reservations about some aspects of the story. I look forward to more of the Vanzarian stories.
Watch falling in love play havoc with them all. Gorgeous!.......2007-08-08
Yay, another Vanza master, this time in the Victorian era. Ooh, sends shivers down the spine just thinking about how quick, how intelligent, how agile, how inventive Ambrose Wells is, yum. Truth be told, his father was murdered when he was a young teen, and Ambrose turned to a life of crime to support himself - until he met his match whilst burglarizing a Vanza master! Now he's turned from the dark side and is one of the good guys. He's investigating a possible murder when he encounters determined schoolteacher Miss Concordia Glade, hastening four of her tender orphaned charges away from some suspicious goings-on at their `school', a heavily guarded castle. Concordia suspects the girls are being groomed for something very nasty and illegal, and smuggles them out with Ambrose's assistance and a couple of well-placed bombs! Hooray for Chemistry! Things turn into a very murky stew with further murders a-plenty, and the grim possibility the young girls are being hunted down ruthlessly. Naturally, Ambrose and Concordia get on the job to protect and defend. Concordia is a delight - unconventional, passionate, and such a champion of `her girls' your heart will be caught. Ambrose, on the other hand, is knocked for six by Concordia; something most unusual. He is, after all, a control freak - he is a Vanza master. Snort!
Another Great Amanda Quick Novel.......2007-05-30
Amanda Quick always delivers a fast paced, interesting story with lots of passion and a good love story. Her latest is no exception. I highly recommend Lie By Moonlight to anyone who likes a great plot and imaginative storyline along with the hot sex scenes. Amanda Quick has never disappointed me.
Lie By Moonlight.......2007-01-28
If you like Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz, etc) you will love this mystery/romance historical fiction. It is most enjoyable.
By far my favorite Amanda Quick novel to date.......2006-12-08
When she learns that the female students she is teaching at a private boarding school are being sold as courtesans to the highest bidder, Miss Concordia Glade takes it upon herself to save them from this fate. She hatches a plan to sneak the girls out of the school and keep them in hiding until she can figure out their next step. What she doesn't expect is that a dashing gentleman named Ambrose Wells will turn up in the middle of her escape and help she and the girls to safety. Under Wells' protection, Concordia and the girls remain in hiding while the man in question tries to figure out who is behind the dastardly scheme to steal these young ladies' innocence.
This is one of the only romance novels I've read in which I had no problems at all with the plot. The heroine didn't do something stupid that made me wish she would just grow up or mind her own business (which has happened frequently in the past with some of my favorite romances including Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught and Love Me Forever by Johanna Lindsey). She had a dream at the beginning of the book, in this case to become the headmistress of her own school, and she went on to achieve it instead of letting it fall by the wayside when she got the guy (this was my main problem with Quick's The Paid Companion). And finally, she wasn't some young girl fresh out of the schoolroom who had no idea what she wanted (which happens more often than I could name). Concordia had a mind of her own, a passion for her students, and an even greater passion for the man in her life. All in all, this novel was essentially a perfect romance for me, and I can't think of the last time I felt this way. I would recommend this book wholeheartedly to Amanda Quick fans who might feel she's fallen off her game recently (which I thought when I read her newest book, Second Sight). It has all the mystery, wit, and excitement of a Quick, but it's done so well I can't think of a single complaint.

Book Description
The Paid Companion:
The Earl of St. Merryn needs a woman. His intentions are purely practical - he simply wants someone sensible and suitably lovely to pose as his betrothed. The easiest solution is to hire a paid companion. However, finding the right candidate proves more of a challenge than he expected - until he encounters Miss Elenora Lodge. But Elenora is unsure what this masquerade might entail. For St. Merryn is clearly hiding a secret or two.
Wait Until Midnight:
The sins of Adam Hardesty's past have been discovered. And if he does not hunt down his blackmailer quickly, his secrets will be revealed to all... But there is an obstacle in his way: sensation novelist Caroline Fordyce. She knows that Adam's quest for justice could shatter her own reputation - and mire her family in lethal scandal. Together, they will navigate the shadow side of London, guarding not only their secrets but their lives...
Lie by Moonlight:
Hired to tutor four orphaned girls at remote, ramshackle Aldwick Castle, Miss Concordia Glade is pleased to find her pupils both eager and bright. Provided for by an unseen benefactor, they are surrounded at all times by hard-eyed guards in the guise of gardeners. Concordia sees at once what must be done. During an investigation into a woman's death, private inquiry agent Ambrose Wells finds himself on the castle grounds - and in the middle of chaos.
Book Description
A killer is on the loose, blurring the line between fact and fiction. His prey - the writers of crime novels who have turned psychological profilers into the heroes of the nineties. But this killer is like no other. His bloodlust shatters all the conventional wisdom surrounding the motives and mechanics of how serial killers operate. And for one woman, the desperate hunt to uncover his identity becomes a matter of life and death.
Professor Fiona Cameron is an academic psychologist who uses computer technology to help police forces track serial offenders. She used to help the Met, but vowed never to work for them again when they went against her advice and subsequently botched an investigation. Still smarting from the experience, she's working a case in Toledo when her lover, thriller writer Kit Martin, tells her a fellow crime novelist has been murdered. It's not her case, but Fiona can't help taking an interest. When the killer strikes again Fiona finds herself caught in a race against time - not only to save a life but also to find redemption, both personal and professional.
Rich in atmosphere, Killing the Shadows uses the backdrops of city and country to create an air of threatening menace, culminating in a tense confrontation between hunter and hunted, a confrontation that can have only one outcome.
Customer Reviews:
I struggled to finish this book.......2007-08-27
Having been a fan of Ms. McDermid from reading Wire in the Blood and the two follow up books, then reading A Place of Execution and becoming completely hooked I expected great things from 'Killing the Shadows' but found I trudged through this book with no real feelings for the characters and found the motive for the killings to be a really big stretch! The side trip to Spain could have been missed out completely.
I can't say I am sorry to have finished reading 'Killing the Shadows' as I found it tedious and uninspiring. Hopefully Ms. Mcdermid's next book will be up to her usual standards.
A superb product from a top contemporary mystery writer........2007-01-14
This is as satisfying a modern mystery as I have read in years. The basic plot description reads as a serial killer of serial killer thriller writers. I will add to this that Ms. Mc Dermid gices us in 1 book: a) 3 seprarate serial killer investigation in varying degrees of detail and all interesting; b) several intelligent detectives, none of them Lestrade-ish or tokenish; c) interesting victims; d) a very charismatic heroine in all senses; e) red herrings in the classic tradition, as well as a surprising main villain. Just read this one; you will not be dissapointed.
the problems with female british mystery writers.......2006-09-30
sum up in two words: too wordy. this novel, like her 'a place of execution', is way too wordy. ms. mcdermid may have come up with some good ideas of murder mysteries, but her writing style is nothing but dragging the text as long as possible. as female writer, she unconsciously put herself as the heroine, fiona, to do some explanation of her relationship with her friend, kit, the crime writer. there are too many pages spent on lot of unimportant blah, blah, blah. too many trivial tidbits throwing around page after page making the reading very very tiresome like reading textbooks. the characters she created in her novels never achieved any up close and personal feelings although many many pages being spent on describing and portraying her characters' personal feelings. i've lost interest and patience in trying to keep focus, to force myself read along, but after repeatedly formatted patterns of the murderers' diaries/records/documentation(?) whatever, the crime scenes reports on the net, newspapers...i have to give it up in the middle and decided to flip it thru and yet still failed to finish it. some interested concepts but panned out too long and too wordy. there are simply too many shadows to be killed, but in the long run, nothing matters.
Straight to video?.......2006-04-06
If this had been a movie, it is my belief it would have gone straight to video. It only came out in hardcover because the publishers knew Ms. McDarmid's name would sell, no matter how very awful the book is. It's hard to believe that the author who wrote A Place of Execution, a truly brilliant mystery novel, could also produce such drivel as Killing the Shadows. Cliched (this is the break we've been waiting for!) and cluttered with poorly written "romance", this book is the written equivalent of a teenage slasher flick. Serial killer running around and all the potential victims acting as stupid as humanly possible.
Killing the Shadows is another winner for McDermid.......2006-02-22
Val McDermid so far in my experence, never fails to deliver a taut, suspensful, well-written product. My only complaint is that she does not write enough books and that not all of her books are available in America.

Too bad about Angus...........2001-11-26
Not until the end of the book was it clear that the teller of the story wasn't the protagonist. In a great twist, the ending suddenly made me see what was going on. It's an interesting experience--I read along for pretty much the whole book thinking one thing, then in the last couple pages had to re-order all my thoughts about what went on.
So what was it? Angus "Bull" has the ability to make everyone agree: everyone agrees that he's a prick. [Apologies to Joseph Heller.] But *why* is he so nettelsome? He'll do anything to prove that he's worthy of his father's admiration. Problem is that he's an illegitimate son of a flag officer whose legitimate son finished the Naval Academy. Poor Angus....
The book's great! Wish I could write that well.
I have never read a book even remotely like this one!.......1997-11-12
Randy Crew very skillfully sets the stage for the final climax to be a real surprise. The reader knows and senses that he is being set up for something BIG. And, sure enough, in the final pages the reader is swept away by rotorwash as the true purpose of the many strange characters you have been reading about all along, is played out to the masterful finish. As a helicopter pilot in RVN, I too had such a dream. Tom Payne RVN 66-67, Bandit32@gorilla.net
Book Description
A Higher Form of Killing opens with the first devastating battlefield use of lethal gas in World War I, and then investigates the stockpiling of biological weapons during World War II and in the decades afterward as well as the inhuman experiments con-ducted to test their effectiveness. This updated edition includes a new Introduction and a new final chapter exposing frightening developments in recent years, including the black market that emerged in chemical and biological weapons following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the acquisition of these weapons by various Third World states, the attempts of countries such as Iraq to build up arsenals, and--particularly and most recently--the use of these weapons in terrorist attacks.

Book Description
The war between Angmar and Degarm has begun. The Griffinkin have allied themselves with Angmar and established themselves in the fortress called Redclaw. The first victim of all this mounting conflict was the great Dragon-leader, Stormfire. Yet, a series of books he left behind suggests that he foresaw of these events. They indicate that he created and hid three objects: the Diamond Dragon, the Glass Dragon, and the Heart of All Dragons. Once found and united, they will show the way to a new homeland for the Dragonkin. Two of Stormfire's triplet children set out to seek the treasures while one stays behind to protect Wyvernwood, to rebuild Stronghold, and to stand against the enemy.

Customer Reviews:
But I don't live in Japan!.......2004-01-18
Most folks who are interested in pursuing Macrobiotics already know that the principles were developed on the Japanese lifestyle. This booklet gives some very general advice, and was not helpful to me because it did not offer any specific ways to make the transition, or offer any substitutes for ingredients commonly found in Asia that may not be readily available in the US, or are just so rare in some regions, that they are very expensive.
Additionally, the produce in the US in most cases is not organic, and it is difficult to understand how the "energy" in your food is going to benefit the body when its "energy" is corrupted by radiation, pesticides, and modern day farming techniques that value quantity over quality. Aside from "buy organic," this booklet doesn't offer many other suggestions.
American lifestyle can make it difficult for people achieve the goals of macrobiotics on a limited budget. This book did not address my challenges on transitioning to macrobiotcs very effectively.
Common sense written down........2001-02-15
This book was informative, but it really didn't go into much detail. I was looking for specifics. I didn't learn any thing I couldn't find out on the internet or with common sense.
Easy to read and understand.......1999-12-08
This is a great starting point for a beginner who wants to make the transition. It is a very non-judgemental approach and easy to follow.
Excellent guide to gracefully changing to a healthier diet........1998-12-15
I found this an excellent, yet simple guide for gracefully changing eating habits. The book is full of suggestions that help the student to succeed. Changing from the standard American diet to macrobiotics is not something most people can do overnight. This simple, easy to read and understand book provides practical suggestions to help one begin the long process of gradual change, a sure way to succeed. Readers are provided with several degrees of dietary change that will help even the most stalwart meat-eater transistion to a healthier way of eating. If you are trying to improve your health (and/or the health of our planet) macrobiotics provides a proven path to your goal. Good luck!
Book Description
A healthy and delicious trove of recipes that capture the heart of Provence but not the fat
In Provencal Light, first published in hardcover in 1994, Martha Rose Shulman embraces the glorious essence of Provence as she introduces us to her favorite recipes, rich and redolent with flavor but lightened for today's lifestyles.
Provencal Light takes us on a fantastic culinary tour of the south of France. Nutrition-conscious home cooks can enjoy such culinary marvels as the ravioli of Nice, filled with chard and chicken or herbs with ricotta cheese; nourishing vegetable tortes; creamy Asparagus and Fresh Pea Risotto; Stuffed Summer Vegetables; Pan-Roasted Quail with Quinces and Figs; and luscious Pear and Apple Souffle. Plus there is a scrumptious selection of richly flavored vegetable gratins and ragouts; satisfying pastas and gnocchi; and heavenly, naturally sweet fruit tarts, clafoutis, and sorbets.
Each recipe is accompanied by a complete nutritional breakdown, including calories, sodium, and fat content. Provencal Light lets you enjoy the marvelous cuisine of the south of France while adhering to a healthful, hearty diet. This is the perfect marriage of low-fat eating and good taste for everyone with a passion for food.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Provencal cookbook.......2003-02-20
I've traveled in Provence, and own many Provencal cookbooks (some, I admit, just for the beautiful pictures!) but this is my favorite. It may be because I attended a cooking class taught by Martha and really got hooked on her approach, which aims at keeping authentic flavors while cutting back on some of the outrageous amounts of fat that are in some of the original recipes. She succeeds at this in almost all of her recipes. Try her green bean and potato salad, redolant of wonderful south France flavors, or her fabulous cherry clafouti, sparked with kirsch, and lightened a little with the addition of yoghurt. If you can only buy one Provencal cookbook and can forego the pictures, get this one.
Gastronomy, Kitchen Tricks, & Excellent Food..........2001-02-13
Martha Rose Shulman truly is a delight. She has written a book that is as fun to sit down and read... as it is to pull out and plan a menu. With each page and each chapter it is obvious to the reader the care and passion the author has towards preserving the essence of Provencal cuisine. Balance this with a healthful approach of minimizing fat without sacrificing flavour and you have the perfect book to add to any healthy gourmand's collection. Unlike many "light" cookbooks, which equate healthy with "fat-free," resulting in tasteless food, Shulman takes the wise approach of moderation. In many recipes, if your diet allows it, you can even add an additional tablespoon of olive oil to further enhance the flavour. A true student of gastronomy and culinary tradition, the author has thoughtfully sluethed, interviewed, practiced and refined plates and recipes from an assortment of kitchens and chefs. The result: a thoughtful and diverse cookbook of flavours that are respectful to their authenticity but balanced with healthful influences. Such approach has garnered her praise from some of the "toughest" food critics, including the hilarious Jeffrey Steingarten in his wonderful "The Man who Ate Everything" (another must-read). Particularly inviting are the recipes for tartes and gratins, rabbit and fish, and an assortment of different takes on clafouti. The tomato and rice soup is delightful with a garden salad for a light dinner... the eggplant and tomato gratin excellent as a side dish at dinner. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book in the few weeks I have had it... and anticipate making it dog-eared in the years to come.

Meissen: Collector's Catalogue.......2006-03-10
I agree with another reviewer and was disappointed by the book. There is very little information about marks, periods, maker's marks (no pictures at all) and ninety percent of the photos of Meissen ware are in black and white and are not of the best quality. It definitely isn't a collector's catalogue as most of the pieces are unavailable to the public (unless they have a lot of money). As a new collector it did not help me at all. There is a book by Jim and Susan Harran called "Meissen Porcelain Identification and Value Guide" which has amazing photos and gives far greater detail on the products, the background, the marks (and forgery's) of this fascinating maker of porcelain.
dissapointing.......2005-11-02
I was deeply frustrated, by the quality of paper, the poor print quality, lack of sharpness of colors and the fact that, the great majority of the plates are in black and white. I felt deceived...

Truly a Complete Course.......2006-09-01
I just received this book yesterday and already I have learned a great deal about re-upholstery. This book has made me very excited and confident that I can do a good job on my first project. As far as I can tell it covers just about every issue in concise and easy to understand language. I would give it a 5 star rating but for the darkness of some of the photos. However, there are an abundance of photos and if you read the instructions carefully then a few dark photos won't be much of a hinderance. If you are interested in learning about upholstery then this is the book and you can't beat the price for this much information.
This book is a disgrace!!!.......2005-02-07
I bought this book for christmas. I had hoped to improve my knowledge of upholstery through it, but I was dissappointed!. This book has only black and white MINI pictures!!. How in the world can one learn to upholster with black and white pictures. These pictures are so bad that they sometimes look just like a black patch? For me, buying this book was a big waste of money. An upholstery book with no good picture is not interesting to read and very very boring!!!
Russ.......2005-01-27
It is completely useless book. It has many old pictures that basically useless b/s given without sequence of steps, show the old type of fabric, has a lot of general information, that you wouldn't need if you want to learn upholstery. I am sure there are better books out there.
Good, but somewhat dated.......2004-10-31
I use this book as a reference for specific upholstery repair issues. There are not many good upholstery books out there, but this is one of the better ones. The fact that it is illustrated is a big bonus, a picture is worth a thousand words. It is well organized and approaches aspects in a systematic manner.
I agree with the other reviewer. Though the book is profusely illustrated, the photos are B&W and many are of mediocre photographic quality and choice of fabric texture to make clear photos. With today's quality of color photos in many DIY books, this one is in need of an update. It could also use a little better editing so the photos are on the same page as the accompanying text.
generally useful.......1999-10-30
While highly detailed on many aspects of upholstery, there are some glaring gaps, which forced me to seek additional information in other books. Also, the photographic reproduction in this book is rather poor, making some of the photos barely discernible.

Generally black and white, consistently made in series, Silvia Bächli's drawings are always determined by her sense of clarity, purity and measure. This book, far from being a complete monograph, presents nearly 300 drawings which Bächli has completed since 1983. Her visual repertoire, which always speak of reduction, confronts with the intensity and range of its visual and mental associations. Edited by Lars Müller. A time in history worth remembering.......2003-09-18
Ms. Brown's story is a history worth remembering. As a young African American educated woman, she embarked on a trip to rural, segregated North Carolina that ultimately changed her life and improved the lives of many poor, uneducated children of former slaves. The decision to stay with her students in North Carolina when she lost her teaching job was a pivotal point in her career, the history of North Carolina education, and the lives of poor, uneducated, children of slave and former slaves.
In this book, I found a new S/hero whose leadership, courage, and unself dedication led to the education of children and the creation of a new school, The Palmer Institute. This goal and desire to bring education to the rural South was done many times at risk to her life and health. Still she was undaunted, you will feel her passion and dedication as if you were right there beside her. I was so awed by her life, I chose her as my subject for a 20th century American History college course.
I highly recommend this book. Attention faculty teaching African American history, American History, and Women's Studies, this should be listed as recommended reading. Your students will ask a good question, "Why haven't we heard about her before?"
Currently, while reading the book, I learned that there is an effort by many to restore and preserve the school's site, her memory and the contributions of many faculty/staff who helped her build The Palmer Institute. I invite you to read the book and share the legacy of Ms. Charlotte Hawkins Brown.
