This was a great summer time book. I loved it and everything Mary Kay Andrews writes. I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. Can't wait for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Always love Mary Kay Andrews' books.......2007-05-13

Mary Kay Andrews will blow you away with this plot. You will find it difficult to do anything else once you get into this book. Her characters are witty and outrageous. Loved it !!!

5 out of 5 stars Little Bitty Lies - a delicious treat.......2007-05-07

As do all Mary Kan Andrews' novels, this one left me hungry for more (in the best way). I wish she were a more prolific writer - I am anxious for the next book. I've read all she's published so far, and can't wait 'till the next. Love her sense of humour, her sensual southern style, and the characters she weaves. I want to get to know them all. More! More!

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny!.......2007-04-05

I love Mary Kay Andrews' style of writing. Funny herione that takes no prisoners - this book doesn't disappoint! Mary Bliss is a great character, that clearly evolved from a perfect southern wife to a strong, independent woman. I laughed out loud at some of the situations Mary Bliss found herself in. I really enjoy Andrews' descriptions of the south and southern debutants. She really gets your attention with some of the funniest situtations for the characters. I love the fact that her female characters are all very strong women (girls) that don't need a man to rescue them, but will use them (men) for all they are worth when necessary. Chick lit at it's best!

"The Alfred Hitchcock Presents Companion" is the first and only "official" book documenting the entire history of the television program, complete with an episode-by-episode broadcast guide. The popularity of the program itself is evident among multiple reruns, now syndicated on local and cable stations around the world. Recollections and memories from the script writers, directors and actors are included. Both the original and the 1980's remake series are covered in detail, with all production credits, complete cast list (including actors uncredited), plot descriptions, Hitchcock's opening and closing remarks (including alternative remarks filmed but never shown during the initial telecasts), and insightful trivia throughout.

A section about Hitchcock's other productions and directorial efforts include "Tactic", Ford Startime's "Incident at a Corner", Alcoa Premiere's "The Jail", "Dark Intruder", "Suspicion" (TV series), "Psycho", and more are discussed in length, also with production credits. Spoofs, rip-offs, print media and collectables are also covered in detail. Hundreds of photos included.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written.......2006-12-30

This book is so poorly written, it is no wonder that it has fallen out of print. The writing is horrendous, the photos (or photocopies) are beyond laughable, and the research is at best shallow. My elementary school students could have done a better job. Don't bother with this book (if you can even locate a copy now). "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" was a classy show with high quality writing, and and any book about it ought to be on par with those standards of excellence. Fans of the show should organize a class action lawsuit against the publisher for breach of compentency. Please someone, write an "unauthorized" companion reference guide, and give this series the tribute it truly deserves.

5 out of 5 stars A SUPERB READ.......2005-06-02

I love HITCHCOCKS work and bought this book to find out more concerning the one area of his productions I knew very little about, namely the tv series. It is so full of detail, facts and figures..its amazing. Theres even a lengthy look at the short story anthologies HITCHCOCK was suppossed to have written introductions for (and didnt!) and much much more.

I cant believe the person who wrote the review on here who concentrated heavily on criticising the writers for their grammar, spelling and turn of phrase in general, its meant as a work of reference and not great literature....when you yourself have written a book which has been so well researched and proved so popular, THEN you'll have room to criticise. If like that reviewer you wish a book that is lacking spelling errors, has nicely reproduced photos etc etc then opt for a dull, large sized, shallow coffee table book to impress your friends. If your a true fan though and want to find out all about the tv work then this book is a MUST HAVE, a godsend to all HITCHCOCK fans.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only Hitchcock book for television fans.......2003-08-20

I have to admit that I have four bookshelves from the floor to the ceiling with hundreds of books about Alfred Hitchcock. With this in mind I will state that Mr. Wikstrom and Mr. Grams has given us the one and only book that EVERY admirer of Sir Alfred should own and read. Everything about the television series from the production history to an episode guide is highly detailed. Experts in their craft from all over the world contributed and this is so clearly evident that anyone who browses the pages will admit the authors took their time to compile one heck of a book. Jaclyn Packer has a Ph.D., Ulrich Rudel is from Europe, Patrik Wikstrom is from Sweden as stated in the "about the authors" and Mr. Grams is already a familiar name. I knew Alfred Hitchcock had cancer more than once but until I read Packer's chapter, I never knew Hitchcock acted in a television episode of "Tactic" and played the role of a director in order to support the cause of fighting cancer. The bibliography even listed two sources of information that impressed me. Thomas Binotto's "Nichts Als Zufalle" from Film Dienst, April 2001 issue and Frank Arnold's "Du Hast Nur 23 Minuten-Alfred Hitchcock's Fernseharbeiten" published in Berlin, Germany in 1999. Of the hundreds of books I have read, this is the first I have seen anyone credit those sources. Obviously two chapters had to be translated to English and the translation is superb. If you want to have an enjoyable and informative book about Sir Alfred's television series, this is the book. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive and comprehensive resource for fans.......2003-08-09

Presented through a special arrangement with Universal Studios, The Alfred Hitchcock Presents Companion by Martin Grams and Patrik Wikstrom is a complete and authoritative guide to the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" television series, including a thorough episode guide with plot summaries, behind-the-scenes looks, over 100 black-and-white photographs, documentation on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" collectibles, information concerning the 1980s remake series, notes on Hitchcock spoofs, and more. The definitive and comprehensive resource for fans of this classic spine-chilling series, The Alfred Hitchcock Presents Companion is also a welcome and very highly recommended addition to personal and academic Television History reference library collections.

    Book Description

This fascinating book not only tells the history of the discovery of Lyme disease over centuries and continents but also provides the latest information about the disease and its treatment. In the process it offers revealing details about the medical process: how physicians make a diagnosis, how they test its accuracy, and how scientific inquiry is influenced by its cultural context. Dr. Jonathan Edlow begins his detective story in Lyme, Connecticut, with the accounts of two housewives who in the mid-1970s noticed a baffling array of symptoms afflicting members of their families and others in the community. As physicians studied this strange disease, they were led to reports of similar symptoms in other eras and countries. Edlow chronicles how connections were ultimately established between symptoms and tick bites, leading to the discovery of the stages of the disease, its specific microbial cause, and its treatment. And he brings the story into the twenty-first century by discussing legal and legislative issues as well as factors that have led to recent widespread outbreaks of Lyme disease and to the controversies over its diagnosis, vaccine, treatment, and even its very definition.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Helpful for Patients.......2005-11-01

This is a well written book. If I didn't know what it left out I would have been very happy with it.

The problem, from a patient's perspective, is that this book is primarily historical and is not of great use to anyone dealing with late stage diagnosis or treatment. It does not even address this terrible problem that so many people face.

Although Dr. Edlow mentions that there are differences of opinion within the medical community on many aspects of this disease, he did not elucidate...and so failed his readers and all late stage patients. He did not mention that many patients can't find a doctor to treat them, much less find one who knows anything about this complex disease. He did not make it clear that those physicians willing to treat LATE stage illness are putting their reputations and licenses on the line...because they do not agree with the IDSA guidelines put forth for EARLY disease.

These differences of opinion are all made possible due to the lack of a definitive and sensitive diagnostic test. Physicians are using CDC surveillance guidelines inappropriately in clinical settings to rule out infection. They are using tests that range from 50-80% sensitve to do this and that is the problem. Even the CDC states on their website that their "surveillance guidelines" are not for clinical diagnosis. Patients need a more sensitive test...the question is: when will it we get it?

5 out of 5 stars Cracking the Borrelia burgdorferi Case.......2004-04-05

In his book "Bull's Eye", Dr. Jonathan Edlow takes the reader through the medical detective work leading to the discovery of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent responsible for Lyme disease. It also deals with several other tick-borne illnesses such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, and babesiosis. Unlike most readers, I have a unique perspective on this work as a former suffer of Lyme disease due to a tick bite I got while hiking in the St. Croix River valley of Minnesota in 1998. Fortunately, my physician, a gifted diagnostician, promptly tested for Lyme disease, and after a treatment of antibiotics (and anti-inflammatory drugs for the migratory arthritic pain involved), I became Lyme free after a careful prescription and testing regimen. It is with that background that I read "Bull's Eye", and I heartily endorse it as the best historical treatment of Lyme disease I have yet seen. I also have the benefit of being a biologist by education, so I was already acquainted with most of the terminology involved. This book is excellent for Doctors and other medical professionals, and is totally suitable to the layman as well, although someone with limited background may end up re-reading sections and flipping to the Appendix and Glossary occasionally.

The book is really a medical detective story, and a gripping one at that. It begins with the symptoms of an unknown disease clustered around Lyme, Connecticut in the mid 1970s. Initially believed to be Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA), authorities began questioning that diagnosis after demographic patterns were not consistent with JRA, and the disease exhibited significant clustering (which JRA does not do.) Initially brought to the attention of authorities by two area mothers, Polly Murray and Judith Mensch, their initial concerns were rebuffed. Through their perseverance, ultimately several teams of doctors began investigating the illness, believed to be linked to an insect vector due to the geographic distribution of the illness and the seasonality of the illness. Navy Doctors William Mast and William Burrows were quick to realize the curative effect of antibiotics on the disease, though not all doctors agreed. Notably Dr. Allan Steere of the Yale rheumatology department believed that antibiotics were not indicated until four years worth of data were analyzed. Although in 20/20 hindsight this is an obvious gaffe, I am sympathetic to the conundrum faced by Dr. Steere, as obviously he didn't want to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics. Where I am not sympathetic to Dr. Steere is in his seemingly arrogant, quick dismissal of the Navy doctors and their corporate and medical knowledge, particularly in light of their ninety percent cure rate with antibiotic therapy. I am somewhat academically amused that Steere and the Yale 'experts' were generally incorrect in most of their initial assumptions. Although I am personally grateful for the work of all the researchers involved, including Dr. Steere, I was exceptionally impressed with Mast and Burrows in addition to noted tick expert Dr. Willy Burgdorfer (after whom the Lyme disease spirochete is named) and his efforts to find the agent responsible for the disease. Working with ticks is extremely difficult: they are small, hard, and contaminated with a gazillion things. Isolating the one agent being searched for, in this case an unknown spirochete, is extraordinarily difficult.

Dr. Edlow is an excellent writer and anyone with interest in the medical field would love this book. The doctor who treated my Lyme disease recently left practice. When he left I went to see him specifically to thank him for all his efforts on my behalf and to give him a copy of "Bull's Eye." It was the least I could do.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Answers Despite Ourselves.......2003-11-06

We have AIDS, SARS, West Nile Virus, and other deadly infectious diseases to make headlines. It might seem that a recounting of the search for the cause of Lyme disease and a treatment for it would lack import. Lyme disease is not insignificant; it isn't as deadly as other newsworthy infections, but it has affected hundreds of thousands of Americans, and can cause symptoms from the curious but unthreatening (like a "bull's eye" pattern of a rash) to arthritis, nerve damage, meningitis, and heart disease. _Bull's-Eye: Unraveling the Medical Mystery of Lyme_ Disease (Yale) by Jonathan A. Edlow, M.D., is a valuable addition to the chronicles of detective work that have led to our understanding, and sometimes treating, serious illness. As in most such stories, this is a tale of triumph, but it is muted; there is still a good deal of confusion and ill-will among patients, doctors, and their lawyers regarding the illness.

Lyme disease was first recognized in the US in Connecticut in 1975. It is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium called _Borrelia burgdorferi_, but it is spread by what epidemiologists call a "vector," in this case the deer tick. The flurry of investigation of the disease was sparked by patients who could not get proper answers from their physicians, and were only eventually referred to Yale University, where the departments of rheumatology, epidemiology, and even ecology started investigating. Thus began the effort to get an epidemiological grip on the phenomenon. Gradually the patterns of the illness itself became clearer. There were stages, first a skin rash, then joint pain, but the connection between the two was uncertain. There was associated meningitis, facial paralysis, inflammation of the heart muscle, and disturbance of heart rhythm in some cases. Though Edlow charts the course of greater understanding of the disease, and makes a good case for pure and applied science eventually producing an accurate concept of the disease and its effects, he describes also the missteps and clinical errors, as well as the personality clashes, the human aspects of scientific endeavor which hamper progress.

In fact, the book ends on a rather sad note of discord. Yes, there has been a boom in knowledge about the disease, and Edlow rightly draws on inspiring stories of other epidemiological success, like the connection of cholera to an infected water supply in nineteenth century London, the development of Koch's postulates as a tool for infectious disease investigation, and the degrees of precision in increasingly complicated laboratory tests. Patients with a sense of independence began to question the theories of the disease's course and treatment, and support groups sprouted up. Some of the groups began to favor the conventional school of treatment and the physicians who followed it, while others preferred alternative methods (not alternative as in homeopathy or acupuncture, just alternative to the prevailing theory). There seem to have been organized efforts to censure doctors on one side or the other, some of whom have had to have bodyguards from time to time. There has been acrimony at professional meetings. Edlow found that those who were helpful when he began writing his book in 1993 made themselves unavailable for interview in 2000, presumably because of the politicization of the controversies. Edlow writes, "Nature goes about its business quite independently of those humans who try to uncover its secrets." _Bull's-Eye_ is documentation that nature is hard enough to understand, and human nature gets in the way of even the best scientific efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Bull's Eye Unravelling the Medical Mystery of Lyme's Disease.......2003-10-08

This book is an excellent addition to your medical library.
The author discusses outbreaks of arthritis and dermatitis
and distinguishes these from Lyme's disease. The author
describes the genetic sequence of bugs and causality in
Lyme's Disease. He offers an increase in the tick population and
arthropoda as Lyme's disease antagonists. In polling,
a strong minority of Lyme's victims recall having had a tick
bite. Humans tend to be hosts for ticks. The IFA test tells
researchers whether or not the patient produces germ
antibodies for the Lyme's disease. Some ticks have multiple
toxins and this aspect is problematic for uniform diagnosis.
Finally , the diagnostic measurements are imperfect.
This book provides a badly needed perspective on Lyme's
Disease. It is highly recommended for your personal health
library. The work would be helpful in assisting you
to make a diagnosis of the disease process because the
patient symptoms and blood chemistry results are not always
conclusive. This book points toward important distinguishing
factors critical to making a correct diagnosis. In addition,
it names important clinicians in the medicinal art.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fast-Paced Historical Mystery.......2003-08-03

Its not often a layperson can be introduced to complex science and come away learning, understanding and appreciating technical issues while enjoying the process. Jonathan Edlow accomplishes all this and more. In addition to allowing the reader to quickly and easily learn and understand the subtleties of Lyme disease and a wide range of related medical topics, the author also introduces us to a broad cast of characters: Lyme disease victims, their families and protagonists; sophisticated academic researchers on several continents; medical sleuths with the single-mindedness of hounds on the hunt; and physician-healers struggling to make sense of the unknown and unknowable as they treat their suffering patients. Edlow makes them all real human beings and allows us to get into their minds and see the mystery of Lyme disease from each different viewpoint. Finally, Edlow assembles all this in a fast-paced mystery story decorated with historical examples and analogies that makes it clear to the reader that discovery and history are unfolding in each exciting chapter.

Bulls Eye is a great read. If Dr. Edlow can repeat this accomplishment in arenas other than medicine, he will be widely recognized as another John McPhee.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good for only a few recipes and ideas.............2001-11-22

I'm a bit disappointed with this book, there's little substance here that justifies the price...or even half the price. Despite there being 126 pages, there aren't all that many recipes, and then certainly not that many that I'd consider accessible from an ingredient, time or interest standpoint. Half of the pages are full page color photos of prepared dishes - beautifully done, but overkill. You'll need a well stocked Asian grocery store near your house to experiment with many of these recipes - I happen to live 2 miles from one, and they don't stock many of the ingredients called for in this book. A very annoying text format was selected for every recipe - right justification. This is simply too inefficient for quick reference while cooking or when making out your grocery list.

In this book there were many recipes that require prepping or cooking a portion of the meal in a fry pan first, or cooking noodles in yet another pot. This is unfortunate as complex meals can be prepared with "just" the steamer, and useful steamer tips weren't mentioned here - one example: cook the noodles in the water in the bottom of the wok, it saves using another pan and saves fuel. Perhaps the recipes were a bit too creative for their own good, and I could have benefited more from the author applying some of their creative efforts towards the actual preparation.

It doesn't appear the book was intended to be an everyday book for generating steamed meals. I really wanted something that would provide weekday steamed meal options - these recipes are simply too involved for most week days. Where the book does lend itself as a resource is for entertaining - that's the only time it'll come off the shelf in my house....but only if I remember to check if I need to special order any ingredients in advance.

Actually, 2.5 stars for this book, there are better steaming cookbooks out there, aren't there? This one's okay for entertaining, but I'm going to keep looking. Steaming is a blast, enjoy.

The American fraktur tradition began about 1740 in southeast Pennsylvania, but quickly spread to other states, and remains popular even today. For centuries, these cherished hand-written and watercolor decorated paper manuscripts have embodied a richness of tradition and culture, blending text with riotous color and Pennsylvania Dutch design. Having roots in medieval European decorated manuscript art, fraktur celebrate family events such as births, baptisms, and marriages among some of America's earliest immigrants of German and Swiss heritage. 230+ photographs, many full page, present exquisite examples of three centuries of American fraktur, interwoven with insightful historical details, information on the making of fraktur, and techniques for preserving these delicate documents. The colorful pages will delight and stimulate curiosity among historians, scholars, and all who appreciate art to explore the hidden treasures that lie at the heart of these charming manuscripts.

Was bedeuten Repräsentation und Luxus heute?

Fierce and exciting, this is the biography of American playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky, the finest writer to emerge from the golden age of television, and the only individual to win three Academy Awards for Marty, Hospital and Network.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The life of one of America's most gifted writers.......2006-10-07

Shaun Considine has done us all a favor by writing an outstanding biography of Paddy Chayefsky, the brilliant television, play and screen writer whose legacy includes "Marty", "The Hospital" and "Network". In addition to his writing, Chayevsky is also remembered for his withering response to Vanessa Redgrave's anti-Semitic tirade at the Academy Awards ("A simple thank you would have sufficed.") Fascinating from start to finish, the book contains a plethora of lively anecodates, and is populated by a large cast of notable characters from the 50's, '60's & '70's -- Burt Lancaster, Bob Fosse, Kim Novak, Arthur Miller, Marilyn Monroe, George C. Scott, Sidney Lumet, George C. Scott, and Nancy Marchant, to name a few.

In many ways Chayefsky lived a sad and angry life -- he was chronically depressed, his wife Susan was reclusive to the point of agoraphobia, and his son Dan emotionally troubled. Yet Chayevsky life's was also exciting, productive and successful. Surrounded by devoted and talented friends, he lived large -- full of spit and vinegar, wit, egotism and brilliance.

Chayevksy knew his own worth as a writer; he didn't lack for confidence and he wasn't humble. Despite frustration after frustration, disappointment and betrayal, Chayevksy kept coming back with new ideas and projects. His failures are as interesting as his successes. After finishing the book, I want to go back and read the scripts that never made it to the screen.

Chaveysky was passionate about his writing and demanded artistic control over his work. In a world where writers were seen as paid lackeys, Chayevsky stood up for the rights of the screenwriter as no one else has. He was just good enough to get the concessions he demanded and in so doing, he paved the way for the writers who followed him. And as screenwriters go, I don't think anyone has ever surpassed him. Chayevsky remains the best example of "The Schreiber Theory", a belief that truly great films are created not by the directors or actors, who play supportive roles, but by the auteur.

In this book, Chayevsky comes across as a man of strong, immoveable convictions and towering humanity. His moral compass made him immune to the political flights of fantasy of his generation. An avowed critic of communism and political extremism of any ilk, he remained a defender of human rights and proud supporter of Israel.

You can't read "Mad As Hell" without concluding that Chayevsky was deeply flawed. He was self absorbed, controlling and prone to temper tantrums. And yet, having read this absorbing biography, I respect and love the man even more. He was both insightful and brutally honest with himself. As he said in his deathbed note to his wife Susan: "I tried...I really tried." (Note: They is a special circle in hell for director Ken Russell for his despicable treatment of Chayevksy during the filming of "Altered States", which may well have contributed to Chayevksy's premature death.)

Considine does a wonderful job of letting Chayevsky's family members, friends and colleagues tell the story of his remarkable life.

5 out of 5 stars Mad as Hell and Still a Genius.......2003-10-02

"...(Chayesfky) called a trusted friend at NBC, John Chancellor. He asked Chancellor if it was possible for an anchorman to go nuts on TV. 'Every day,' replied Chancellor."

Paddy Chayefsky wrote NETWORK. That would've been enough to put him in the top grade of all Hollywood screenwriters by itself. Twenty-five years after NETWORK hit the screens, there were dozens of articles that his script wasn't just a satire of the media, it was a genuine prophecy.
But Chayefsky has also done what no other writer has yet to do: he's won three Oscars for screenwriting (the other films were MARTY and THE HOSPITAL).
The man is definitely work reading about. Even if I didn't have an interest in screenwriting, I believe I would still find this book interesting for its look into the "Golden Age of Television" and the behind-the-scenes stories of Chayefsky's film career. The author has done a wonderful job of coming up with a lot of great details and fascinating anecdotes about everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Sam Peckinpah to Bob Fosse to Burt Lancaster.

Paddy Chayefsky was the real deal as a writer and I know his work will be praised and studied for decades to come. Shaun Considine has done everyone a favor by giving us a look into Chayefsky's life.
