Book Description
Andr Breton wrote that Maldoror is "the expression of a revelation so complete it seems to exceed human potential." Little is known about its pseudonymous author aside from his real name (Isidore Ducasse), birth in Uruguay (1846), and early death in Paris (1870). Lautr amont's writings bewildered his contemporaries, but the Surrealists modeled their efforts after his lawless black humor and poetic leaps of logic, exemplified by the oft-quoted slogan, "As beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting-table of a sewing-machine and an umbrella!" Maldoror's shocked first publisher refused to bind the sheets of the original edition...and perhaps no better invitation exists to this book, which warns the reader, "Only the few may relish this bitter fruit without danger." This is the only complete annotated collection of Lautr amont's writings available in English, in a superior translation.

Step Into Darkness.......2007-01-12
I like my writers drunk, blasphemous, decadent and French. If any of that list sounds even vaguely familiar then this is the book for you. Set the absinthe fountain to a slow drip, light some candles and prepare to tour an alchemical end-of-the-century underworld.
The book that keeps on giving.......2006-12-12
What to say about Maldoror that hasn't been said yet? What to say about the mysterious son of a diplomat who appeared in France, wrote this book and died, vanishing from the world, yet leaving his mark for decades and centuries yet to come?
The first time I had the pleasure of reading this exceptional work, I was taken aback. Barely seventeen, I hungrily swallowed the disturbing images leaping at me from the pages, not to fully comprehend them until years later. This work, over a century old, is believed to be the first work, the foundation stone of the surrealist movement, a movement that penetrated into every aspect of art, life, being; whether we are willing to admit it or not, this work is as important today as it was when originally published in 1868 (well, at least a part of it was). The world was not ready to receive the complete self-awarness of evil Maldoror so fully comprehends, and the world is still not ready. This work is certainly not to be read by a "closed" mind. It is said that to be creative, one must borderline insanity, yet, Lautreamont was playing with genius; a genius of a caliber capable of scaring away even the most immodest of us. But get deeper into his work, walk past the disturbed images, surpass your fears and you shall see the light. This work cannot be ignored, cannot be left to collect dust. I have owned several copies over the past 14 years, and I am still finding new meanings, new passages and new understanding in this wonderful work. This trully is the one book that will never get old, that will always keep on giving, as long as one is ready to listen.
Evil of the Dawn.......2005-12-02
Isidore Ducasse's or Comte de Lautreamont's 'Les Chants de Maldoror' is a book one can contemplate over it's themes of darkness.
The songs of Maldoror is essentially an occult view of the world.
For good and evil are seen as equally important and mutually linked forces in nature, divorced from the moral content given to them by human beings. This is even noticeable in the name of the book's hero: Maldoror, which is a pun on 'mal d'aurore' (evil of dawn), the combination of darkness and light.
The book's phrase 'as beautiful as a chance meeting on a dissection table of a sewing machine and an umbrella' was also very important for the surrealists. It was valued because it was absolutely original in its combination of a banal object from everyday life with something that carries sinister and morbid overtones. The phrase also consists of a paradox, two of these objects have an constructive and therefore positive function, while the third has a dissecting and destructive, and therefore negative function. Yet these are only inanimate objects, it is only our imagination that puts "life" into them and give them these qualities.
It was this paradoxical metaphor that led Breton to describe Lautreaumont as the "unattackable".
The book also mocks science in its attempt to impose a static and rational order upon nature and attacks the belief that humanity is superior to the natural world. Religion is seen as an absurd delusion and god is seen as an unworthy, ineffectual, pathetic drunkard, scorned by the animals he is meant to have created.
This book can be seen as a belief that the "traditionally ugly" can be transmuted to an aesthetic value. When the socially conditioned fear of the ugly has been overcome, pleasure and psychological power are acquired.
Salvador Dali wrote:
"Repugnance is the sentry standing right near the door to those things that we desire most".
Tough To Stomach.......2005-07-06
This is a hard book to digest, but it is worth it, so long as you do not faint at gory detail, and crave a classical mixture of poetry and prose: only then can you appreciate the ultra esoteric Maldoror.
THIS IS THE TRANSLATION YOU WANT.......2004-08-24
Alexis Lykiard captures the rabid bite, godlike arrogance, swooning eroticism, obnoxiously erudite vocabulary, genius humor, and vortex of profound madness that is Lautreamont's Maldoror. Don't waste your time with a translation that will mar this masterpiese with even a streak of drabness.

Evanly Bodies.......2007-08-29
To me this book was not up to the standard of all the other books I have read in this series. I did not enjoy the plot and I found people I had enjoyed in this series missing.
Plot Reminiscent of Old Locked Room Mysteries.......2007-02-23
Evanly Bodies is set in a small town in Wales, where Detective Constable Evan Evans and his new wife Bronwen live in a small and somewhat eccentric house. Change comes to their little town when a Pakistani family moves in and reopens the defunct grocery store. While the townspeople are glad of a place to shop locally, a few culture clashes ensue. And while Bronwen finds herself embroiled in the issues with the new residents, Evan is trying to solve a series of seemingly related, unusual murders.
Three men, who are apparently unknown to each other, are shot on different days by the same weapon while eating in their homes, all seated by a window. Evans must solve these improbable crimes while dealing with a new boss and a position on a special, centralized crime squad - a position which might be either a reward or a punishment, depending upon interpretation.
I found this book particularly interesting because of the contrasts in it. The quaint Welsh village is a backdrop for the heinous acts people commit against each other and serves to highlight some of the harsh truths of our modern world. And just when you think you have the situations and characters sussed out, Bowen slips in some surprises that both keep you on your toes and are ultimately rewarding.
The settings in the book are good and well described, as are the characters. The townspeople, in particular, are a hoot. The plot is reminiscent of old locked room mysteries and, true to that genre, Bowen tries out some sleight of hand to keep the reader from asking the right questions.
Favorite character? Evan Evans, who sees his duties through to the end, no matter how they end up. Did I guess it? Most of it. Will I read another? Yes.

3.5 stars - An enjoyable traditional mystery.......2006-12-06
DC Evan Evans is newly married to Brownen, a teacher. Brownen has befriended the daughter, Jamila, of a Muslim family recently moved to the village of Llanfair. Jamila's brother has become quite militant in his views and has influenced the family to send Jamila back to Pakistan and into an arranged marriage. Jamila has expressed fear of her brother to Brownen and has now disappeared. It's up to Evan to find Jamila and determine just how dangerous is her brother. In the meantime, Evan has been assigned to a new squad investigating the murder of a professor shot through an open window. While the wife is a suspect, second and third killings are committed with the same MO and weapon but no obvious link between the victims.
Reading an Evan Evan's traditional mystery is always a wonderful break from my often dark reading. While I personally would have liked a stronger sense of place--is it Wales, after all--and the dialogue a bit more fluid, I still enjoyed it. What Bowen does so well is to create an interesting cross-section of realistic characters, an interesting plot and a logical execution. What Bowen does exceptionally well is to integrate issues of the day into her story without being preachy or losing the momentum of the story. If there is a fan of the traditional mystery who has not yet discovered Ms. Bowen, for what are you waiting?
More great work from Rhys Bowen.......2006-11-04
Rhys continues her excellent series featuring Detective Evan Evans. This book also shows how married life suits him. The plot, once gain, is exciting and the usual loveable Welsh locals bring the usual touch of humour.
This book, along with the others in the series is a joy to read as it contains none of the garbage which is dished up by many crime writers today. No obscenities, no exaggerated sexual happenings, great use of English and believable characters. Good on you Rhys - looking forward to the next one.

A charming traditional mystery.......2006-10-04
Rhys Bowen is one of the few authors of "cozy" mysteries in recent years to achieve much critical success, having been nominated for the prestigious Edgar Award in 2005. It's clear to see why she has received that acclaim, as her new book shows.
"Evanly Bodies" is a charming mystery set in Wales, featuring the unassuming Detective Constable Evan Evans, a man with a quiet manner, but a sharp mind.
Evans' knack for investigating crimes doesn't sit well with his ambitious superiors, which is why he's been relegated to only the menial tasks on a murder case. That doesn't stop him from probing to the heart of the crime, however, pursuing clues and theories that his thickheaded boss would never even consider.
Bowen writes with a light, deft touch, adding considerable likeability to both her characters and her story. "Evanly Bodies" is a fine example of a traditional mystery, and a real treat to boot.

Even better the N-th time around..........2007-05-11
I've read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. It's a true delight to read a work where the main character, a fully realized person I feel I could talk to, works through her conflicts with something _other_ than violence. Even when forced to hurt someone, she regrets the pain involved. I won't give away the story, but there are many places in the book where the movement, the dance of energy, is simply wonderful.
Too many stories revolve around violence - this absolutely lovely book revolves around the character, in a way that recalls the inner peace of the dance of tai-chi, the flow of water, and the sound of the wind...
Compelling Characters on a Journey into Chinese Mythology.......2006-08-28
Paper Mage follows the story of Xiao Yen, a girl growing up on the non-traditional path of becoming a paper mage. She struggles with differing concepts of her duty, because her duty to her mother, to marry and raise a family, directly conflicts with her duty to her great-aunt and mentor, Wang Tie Tie, who wants her to use her paper magic to accomplish something that will attract the attention of Old Zhang, an immortal, so that Wang Tie Tie might obtain a peach that will take her to the immortal lands.
Two stories are woven into the book, as alternating chapters cover Xiao Yen's present and her past, which follows her through mage school. The alternating chapters avoided any need to fit in flashbacks or have extra background information stuck on the beginning. At first it was slightly confusing, but by the second cycle I was used to the system and it worked for me.
The themes of this book, such as making one's own luck and balancing duties to others and to oneself, are often well-woven into the plot, and their relevance to Xiao Yen and her story is very clear. However, at some points it seems as though they are brought up constantly, and this repetition made me want to skim ahead a bit to where the story might pick up. I enjoyed the characters, especially the arc of the foreigner Udo, and the atmosphere of this journey into Chinese myth enough that I dismissed these moments of mild beating-dead-horse with relative ease. After Xiao Yen's view of having luck and losing luck, as something she has no control of, is established in a slightly horse-beating way, the foreigners' view brings the "moral" of the story, that she can still succeed and create her own luck, and even later earns a symbol on her own that shows her re-found luck.
Disappointment doesn't begin....I want my money back!!.......2005-11-04
I'm a long time fantasy reader and was totally intrigued by the concept of a story with an Asian setting. The first chapter had me hooked, and then it was all down hill from there. It's easy to write off the criticisms as not understanding an Eastern culture, but that is just as basic as the writing in the book. Xiao Yen as the main character was whiny and uninteresting, I kept wanting to know what happened to Wang Tie Tie (Mei Mei). She was absolutely the more worthwhile figure of the book. Cutter does a thorough and detailed job describing the culture and I enjoyed most of it - although I felt at times it was distracting. Reading this book it seemed that Cutter had some very clear scenes in her head but didn't know how to pull them together to make a cohesive and flowing story. As I was nearing the end of the book, I kept wondering how she was going to resolve Xiao Yen's dilema with just a few pages left - and then it ended. If she ever writes Mei-Mei story, I'll consider borrowing it from the library, but otherwise this is the first and last of Leah Cutter for me.
It's Like Eating Raw Brocolli..........2005-03-19
It's fresh, and it's not something I eat everyday, but it's just not that good...
Paper Mage holds a lot of promise. A fantasy based on the Eastern world would surely stand out in the middle of all the other European-based fantasy. And it succeeds on that one thing alone perhaps; it is quite believably set in China. But the overall effect of this is that it's candycoated.
Many parts are difficult to digest. Although the writing is poetic, it jerks around and contains an awful lot of unecessary information. For instance, I do not find it a good idea at all that every time something is described, references to old stories are mentioned. Because this book is described through Xiao Yen, the main character's point of view (basically), the overall effect of this makes it sound fake, as if it's trying TOO hard to be authentic. "Fu Be Be walked without hesitation, like the ghost Wu Quang Yin on her way to collect more souls." Even as a child raised on stories, I do not think this way. It's just not right.
And then there's the constant shifting of chapters. It's just not necessary either, and distracts from the storyline.
Xiao Yen herself is difficult to like. Although I should easily be able to identify with her, being 'away from my home and family' and being 'different' kind of thing, I sort of detested her. Her way of showing her homesickness is not very convincing; it just sounds as if she's complaining. It could have been done in a better way, but the author chose to wrote it in a painfully obvious and excruciating manner. Not to mention her constant detachment from her companions is annoying; no wonder she's so lonely, she won't let anyone in her life! In the end she learns nothing 'new', and I feel disappointed that how I had expected the novel to end as per the first real chapter is how it ended. Everything was predictable.
In short, it is a somewhat vaguely entertaining book if you're looking for something Eastern. Probably a good rent from the library. That's what I did. Go for it.
Skill with brush and paper sets this one apart.......2005-01-16
Set in a fantasy equivalent of T'ang China, it's dependent upon a more subtle grasp of the culture of the time. It may be alien to many Western readers for this reason, but the psychology behind the characters' motivations will be appreciated by fans of Chinese literature. The author has obviously done boatloads of research into the real-world analogue of her world, and her attention to detail is manifest in her rich landscapes and exotic mythologies. She does a good job of describing a scene with the right number of words -- verbose where detail is warranted, but able to capture an emotion in a brief phrase if needed. I will certainly be looking for her other books; I enjoyed every word of this one, and will reread it to catch nuances I missed the first time through.

A Biography in a bottle.......2000-02-18
I read Edward Steinberg's The Making of a Great Wine after hearing him speak at a wine seminar here in Rome with Scala Reale Architectural Itineraries. I found his down-to-earth style appealing and the book lived up to my expectations, in fact exceeding them. It is structured like a complex biography of a product, in the end a bottle of 1989 Sori San Lorenzo, but in telling the story touches on all aspects of this wine. One meets the makers and learns about their own history, one learns about the chemistry and biology behind grapes and their fermentation, one learns about land and weather and farming. And of course there is Italy, well-described as the backdrop for this particular wine. The reader is left with a thirst for this, unfortunately rare, vintage.

Other chapters include Horizontal Base Rows, Vertical Base Rows and a fanciful chapter called Girls, Curls and Clowns with lots of three-dimensional detail. Each of these chapters features creative patterns using the techniques discussed.
