Awesome Suspense Book Series.......2007-07-28
The book is awesome and Greg Herren has the best writting style. I never want the book to end when I am reading them. I love the characters in this series and each book makes you love them more and more. I would recommend reading the books in order as they build on each other. This is a book series not to be missed.
Great addition to the series........2007-02-05
"Mardi Gras Mambo" has wonderful insider details about Carnival in New Orleans and a rip-roaring, action-filled conclusion.
Fans of the series should certainly read this entry, but fans of gay mysteries or New Orleans mysteries should probably read the earlier two books first, in chronological order, because they introduce characters and themes carried forward here.
Good Murder Mystery! Entertaining Characters!.......2006-12-05
This is my third murder mystery I have read by Greg Herren. He delivers a fast-paced story, interesting characters and good plot development. The characters are all hot! I love Scotty the main character and all his off-beat family. It makes for a good read. Not much graphic sex (as Usual) - same as in second book in the series. It's (...) sex by innuendo again, or interruption by an event or everybody is too tired. Even when it's three people! This is the only tiresome and repetitive part in his books. But the story line is very good and not disappointing. Looking forward to the sequel.
Entertaining escapist fare.......2006-05-06
"Last night I dreamed it was Mardi Gras again."
I admit that I was a little skeptical of the idea of a psychic go-go dancer PI. But if I can accept the idea of some little old lady in England solving murders or a ghost helping to bring his killer to justice, why should I draw the line at an ex-exotic dancer with a hotline to The Goddess?
In the diverting third book of the series, PI Scotty Bradley sets out to discover who killed his drug dealing crony, and stumbles over a number of disturbing secrets--a few uncomfortably close to home.
I'm glad I gave this one a shot. Main character Scotty Bradley is a likeable scamp with enough vulnerabilities to make him interesting--and the dynamic between S. and his lovers, former FBI agent Frank and cat burglar Colin, is solid...right up to a rather disconcerting twist at the end (though I'm guessing not as disconcerting a twist as it would have been had I been following the series all along).
The mystery itself is amusingly preposterous--it's all done in broadstrokes--for the most part.
Herren's affectionate portrayal of doomed New Orleans gives the book a certain poignancy--underscored by the REBECCA-like opening. So despite the laughs, in the end, MARDIS GRAS MAMBO touches heart as well as funny bone.
Scotty and the boys do it again.......2006-05-04
I love a good mystery. Greg delivers another one in this book. This time, the mystery centers around the Bradley family's secrets. The murder of Scotty's drug dealer sets him on an investigation that keeps coming back to an uncomfortable truth: that even people we think we know well have hidden lives and agendas. Scotty finds out that his parents have withheld information about his grandfather's secret second family. That doesn't sit well with Scotty, because he was raised to believe that his family was open and honest. But his parents aren't the only ones holding back the truth, and as bodies start piling up around Scotty, more people who are close to him reveal their secrets. Some are devastating betrayals, but some repair strained relationships. I don't want to say any more about the twists and turns this story takes, because that's all the fun of reading a mystery.
There are several things that make this book enjoyable. Scotty loves life, and his irrepressible determination to enjoy himself makes him unique as a detective. Greg's love of New Orleans simply shines through the book, and he makes you want to love his city too. And, of course, it's a damn good mystery with well paced action and humor that keep you turning pages right to the end.

Book Description
Hairstylist Marla Shore stumbles over her rival's body in the meter room behind their competing salons. When her boyfriend, hunky Detective Vail, asks for her help in solving the murder, she jumps on the case. The stakes rise when the victim's trusted psychic warns her that someone she loves is in great danger. Her investigation takes her to a smoky bingo parlor, a spooky town run by spiritualists, and sultry Delray Beach. But what scares Marla the most is her relationship with Vail which takes a surprising turn.
Customer Reviews:
Another hair-raiser from Nancy Cohen!.......2005-04-15
Ya gotta love Marla. She keeps her salon in perfect order, avoids her mother's good intentions, develops her relationship with her boyfriend's daughter, keeps an eye on her auntie and her best friend, survives a hurricane, considers marriage, and helps run her dead rival's shop--all without a hair ever out of place. Well, okay, maybe she needed a little touch up after the hurricane, but all in all, Marla's got it covered.
As usual, the characters are fun, the setting is realistic, and the murder is most foul. And the reader is left wanting more. Can't wait for the next book in this terrific series.
Solving mysteries while staying self-absorbed.......2005-03-02
When the power goes out in her hairdressing salon, Marla Shore instantly suspects her competitor and enemy Carolyn Sutton of sabotage. But when she finds Carolyn's dead body in the electricity room, Marla herself becomes a suspect. Thanks to boyfriend-cop Vail, Marla doesn't have too many problems with the police, but Carolyn's psychic tells Marla that Carolyn is begging her to solve the case--from beyond the grave.
There are plenty of suspects. Carolyn's business hadn't been doing well, but the woman had plenty of money. Could she have made that much playing Indian Bingo, or was there another darker explanation? Marla investigates the local chiropracter, the landlord, Carolyn's sister, and the psychic herself. Meanwhile, Vail is assigned a second murder case--a young girl who had a hunk of hair cut from her head in exactly the same way that Carolyn had.
Marla's busy social life doesn't let up. She has to decide what to do with her relationship to the hunky cop, help her aging aunt deal with bills and taking care of herself, fix her mother up with an upgrade boyfriend, socialize with Vail's teenage daughter, and run her business.
Author Nancy J. Cohen writes convincingly of a self-absorbed sleuth as she deals with her anger over Carolyn's competition even after the woman is dead. Cohen delivers an interesting mystery with a wealth of truly criminal people as suspects--apparently there isn't really anyone honest in Florida these days. The writing is occasionally clunky, especially in the opening, but becomes more smooth as Cohen gets into the story.
Splitting Hairs.......2005-02-19
"Died Blonde" is the 6th in the Bad Hair Day Mysteries. I was too lazy to write individual reviews on each, so this review is of this book and an overall review of the series, which includes:
Permed To Death. Hair Raiser. Murder By Manicure. Body Wave. Highlights To Heaven. Died Blonde.
Died Blonde:
Marla Shore, owner of Cut `N" Dye Salon isn't happy when going out to check why the electricity in her shop has gone off, stumbles over the body or her rival and former employer, Carolyn Sutton.
Who else but Marla, who was angry with Carolyn for moving her new shop into the same mall as she is located and undercutting her prices would want the woman dead.
Marla is determined to find that out. It could be Carolyn's sister, Linda Hall, who was rumored to be jealous of Carolyn, and was angry when she didn't inherit the hair salon. Or maybe Carolyn's psychic, Wilda Cleaver, who did inherit the shop, did she kill Carolyn to get it?
With the help of her boyfriend, Lt. Dalton Vail, Marla is determined to prove she didn't kill her rival, even though she wanted to many times.
Highlights:
The relationship between Marla and Dalton Vail and his daughter Brianna. They met in the first book, "Permed To Death" where Dalton was investigating Marla as a murder suspect. Just because she was locked in the shop alone with the victim, made and served her the cup of coffee with the poison and had been being blackmailed by the victim for years, shouldn't have made Marla a suspect should it?
This has been a very slow going relationship, Marla has a tragedy in her past that is making it difficult for her to bond with any child. This tragedy has been well worked into the storyline and Marla's reactions and choices make her a very realistic character.
The mysteries. Except for this book, all the mysteries have been great. In several of the books, both the victims and the murderer have been characters who have appeared in the series since the first book.
The supporting characters. There is a wide range of returning characters from major ones, such as Dalton and Marla's mother, to minor characters, such as Mr. Thomson the landlord and Carolyn herself, who appeared briefly in each book. Occasionally, a minor character, such as "goat" the free lance dog groomer will become a major character in a book and then go back to a supporting character.
Lowlights:
Not enough use of supporting characters. Except for her mother, and Dalton, many of the supporting characters are underused. Marla does everything by herself. She only rarely will involve anyone with her crime solving, even her best friend Tally is only used as a sounding board.
The mystery in this book. The murderer might as well have had `KILLER' written across their forehead, they were so obvious. The fact that Marla didn't see it made me wonder about her intelligence.
Overall a very satisfying series. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Who killed Marla's rival?.......2005-02-15
Hairstylist Marla Shore finds her rival, Carolyn Sutton, dead in the meter room in back of their strip mall. Her boyfriend, Detective Vail who is a hunk, asks Marla for her help. He feels people will talk to her about this better than they will to him. She is a hairstylist, and they know her. Usually he's telling her to not investigate, so she jumps at the chance to help.
She's also trying to set her mom up with Sam from the hardware store. Marla doesn't like Roger, her mom's boyfriend. Since he's out of town, she works hard to bring her mom and Sam together.
Marla talks to Carolyn's psychic and is told some information about her own family that concerns her. She talks to Carolyn's bingo partner. Marla and her best friend end up visiting a nearby town and meeting with some psychics to gain more information.
Instead of clearing up the details, the waters just get muddier. Plus, a hurricane is bearing down on Florida. Can Marla uncover the truth about Marla's death, as well as some other issues that have come out of her death, as well as keep her own salon working, and keep herself and those important to her safe and healthy?
Things with Vail are heating up, and she has to come to terms with her feelings for him and his daughter. Is she ready to make things more permanent?
I always enjoy books in this series. Marla is a great character. Her salon business brings her in touch with so many people. She is always able to get the dirt that Vail cannot get. The relationship between Marla and Vail is wonderful too. I can't wait to read the next book and see what happens to them.
I highly recommend this book.
Cute, South Florida-based mystery by Cohen.......2005-01-15
I liked the cute story about a Jewish salon owner sleuth, Marla Shore. The book is descriptive of its South Florida locale, so those who live there or have traveled to the area can identify the roads, places, and towns, and maybe with Cohen's cultural view of the area. Boca Raton, etc.
Marla enjoys many adventures and meets many zany people en route to solving the mystery (which the reader should find out, so I won't go on!). Interwoven into the tale is a love story between Marla and the hunky detective, Mr. Dalton Vail. Part of the story tells about how Marla invites Dalton into her Jewish world, including detailed descriptions of Rosh Hoshannh. Ms. Cohen lovingly details how Jewish Marla's family is.
As a mystery, the book contains some villains and other characters that Marla encounters along the way, descriptively described by Cohen. There are the illegal "French" immigrants. An Irish-Italian chain smoking woman at an Indian casino, and a whole host of others. Ms. Cohen mentions and frames the ethnicity of every character in the book, some positive, some negative. But I'm not sure that really adds to the reality of the story, nor is her skewed stereotyping really necessary for a book for this age group.
Customer Reviews:
A solid effort.......2003-07-28
This was the first Fantastic four book I've ever read, although I have many of the comic books. It seemed that the storyline was more of a Silver Surfer book than a Fantastic four one. Either way, there was enough action to keep my interest. The character development fell a bit short, but the Fantastic Four aren't about drama anyway, they're about action. This book delivers that action: it's a solid effort.
childish, shallow and mindless.......2001-02-11
I don't read Fantastic Four comics, so I can't say whether Michael Jan Friedman's novel successfully captures the spirit of the comic book. However, I must say that if it does, I won't be adding the FF to my comics buying list anytime soon.
The plot of "The Redemption of the Silver Surfer" seems promising enough. The FF are drawn into the Negative Zone by Blastaar, one of their old enemies, who enlists their help against Prodigion, who may or may not be a Negative Zone equivalent of Galactus, the eater of worlds. The Silver Surfer, Galactus's former Herald, joins the FF in the Negative Zone, where Prodigion perhaps offers him a chance for redemption. Hence the title.
However, Friedman's writing is childish and heavy-handed. There is no subtlety of characterization; the FF are essentially one-note cardboard-cutouts, and the Surfer's guilt is completely unconvincing. Given his past, I'd say it must have taken work to make him so shallow. Great job, Mr. Friedman. Furthermore, the is-Prodigion-good-or-bad question, which could have been interesting and raised hard ethical issues, gets old very fast. The ethics never get much more serious than "It's good to help people, and bad to hurt people." Wow. I never knew that. Thanks for telling me.
"Redemption" is a fast read, and fine to fill an otherwise empty afternoon, but I know comics can provide a lot more. One great thing about superhero comics (besides the action and ridiculous costumes) is their ability to cut to the heart of myths and archetypes, without having to worry about strict realism. "Redemption" keeps the action and impossible costumes, but it's novelization by the numbers. It has no deeper level. Hell, it doesn't even have a human level, to give the action even minimal coherence. And that hurts.
(The illustrations, on the other hand, are great! Pity there aren't more of them...)
A fantastic read!.......2000-05-22
This, like Countdown To Chaos is a very good read, and a must have for anyone who loves Fantastic Four and stories about the Negative Zone. I also would strongly recommend this for those who are fans of the Silver Surfer for this novel has some of the best characterization ever done on him in any work.
A well written book that is true to Comic series.......2000-04-28
This book is amazing. I have read many novels that are based on comic book series, and some of them do not capture the essential spirit of the series. Fortunately, Michael Jan Friedman has done just that. He has wonderful characterizes the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer perfectly, giving homage to their illustratrous past. Every detail he wrote and George Perez illustrated hold true to the FF comics. The story is fresh and original, with twists and unexpected turns.
It is well worth your money to read this, but as you can tell from the other reviews either you like it or you don't. Well, I love it! Excelsior!
FORGET THIS BOOK, It's not worth it........2000-03-26
If you like dumb books than this is for you. I have collected comic books and I am an expert in discussing the marvel characters, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to say this book is bad. Sure, this book has an okay plot and the graphics are spectacular, but they cannot make up for the lack of characterization and sub-plots in this book. I give this book two stars out of five. It has an okay plot but is sorely lacking in areas that are vital to a good book.
Book Description
This book serves as a guide for the next generation of dieters who will be delighted to know that only certian carbohydrates are responsible for adding on the pounds and clogging up the arteries--and sugar is not one of them.
Customer Reviews:
He may be a great cardiologist, but...........2006-05-26
I was disappointed in this book. While promising low carb and tipping his hat to Dr. Atkins, this book is squarely moderate carb.
There are many internal inconsistencies and inaccuracies in this book. For example (page 131) "In Western countries, the only[italicized in original]good source of insoluble fiber is the husk of the wheat kernel, called bran." The Harvard School of Public Health states that insoluble fiber can also be found in seeds. Flax seed has 3g of fiber per tablespoon, 2 of which is insoluble, and virtually no other carbohydrate. Wheat bran has only 1.5 grams of fiber per tablespoon and almost another gram of other carbohydrate.
Dr. Thompson is also contradictory in his advice about dietary cholesterol. He says that dietary cholesterol does not significantly affect blood cholesterol (p.46, p.146). Yet, when giving dietary advice, he advocates avoiding egg yolks on the same page! (p. 146)
I am concerned by his enthusiastic use of statins as the only means to control blood cholesterol. He mentions no side effects. On the other hand, he goes to great pains to point out the potential side effects of aspirin.
If you are looking for a dietary answer, I'd suggest The South Beach Diet by Dr. Agaston as a far superior work.
It works!!!.......2005-04-20
The New Low-Carb Way of Life is a very satisfying eating program that has enabled me to lose a lot of weight and to reduce my blood pressure and cholesterol to ideal levels! I don't feel hungry or deprived - in fact, I feel great! The book is enjoyable to read, and Dr. Thompson's advice is very easy to follow. I highly recommend it!
Going out to get my own copy now.......2005-04-17
My cousin and I both have PCOS and she actually was referred to Dr Thompson by one of my dr's. During her visit, he gave her a copy of this book and when I flipped through it, I figured we both could do this and get off a lot of the medications we both take. In the first 5 days I followed what was in her book, I have already lost weight and inches, so I am going to go get my own copy so I can lose more. We are both pumped, and our goal is to lose more weight before her next monthly appointment with Dr Thompson.
Lower Cholesterol and Chocolates.......2004-12-25
If you want to have a better understanding about cholesterol and body weight, then this book by Rob Thompson is the answer. He explains everything in detail like a master story teller and the common man will not have any difficulty in understanding.
I have been on a low carb diet for a long time and supplemented that habit with a wonderful tasting replacement made from soyabeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower your cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will effect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it. Your life will become all the more enjoyable.
The New Low-Carb Way of Life.......2004-10-27
It isn't a diet, it is a way of life that makes sense and works! My Italian pasta/bagle loving husband and I, a chocoholic, and mother of five, were worried about midlife pounds, lack of energy and family genetics of diabetes. Dr. Thompson's book made so much sense that we tried it. We have each lost 30 pounds(he looks yummy again!), have more energy, have gotten back to our walking regiment and are still enjoying eating. We have fun discovering better ways to order from menus, are amazed the "punch" a few cherries or pistachio nuts can have and I can still eat chocolate! This book gave us back control of our bodies and our lives!
Customer Reviews:
The cookbook to have if you're having only one.......2002-02-14
This is the classic of American cooking, the first cookbook to own and the one you go back to all your life.
Beard had a brilliant sense for food, and in this book he shares concepts and approaches, explaining the equipment you use, and the techniques, methodically, clearly and with his particular elan.
Anyone can follow this book. But between the recipes presented throughout the book (organized in the unusual manner of by technique - things you boil, things you bake, things you roast, etc.) and the concordance (organized by food), you can find great recipes and just plain information and direction to help you make just about enough food to last a lifetime.
I brought it with me to France and still rely on it.
Covers the basics methods and ingredients of good cooking.......2001-01-28
This classy reprint of a standard cooking guide deserves a spot on the shelf of any serious cook's collection: this edition provides an introduction by Julia Child and a foreword by Barbara Kafka as it covers the basics methods and ingredients of good cooking, with a healthy dose of Beard's philosophy added for spice.
Good solid reference for the serious cook.......2001-01-13
Selection, technique and associated recipes from this legend make this a book one turns to often. Mine is worn out from over fifteen years of usage. You'll put it profit in your kitchen.
Yum!.......2000-05-13
A must for anyone who loves good food. I bought my copy about 20 years ago in my bachelor days, and still refer to it regularly. If you can learn the techniques in this book and in "From Julia Child's Kitchen," you'll be in the 99th percentile of home cooks. Add a couple of Pierre Franey's 60-Minute Gourmet or Cuisine Rapide volumes, and you and yours will eat well for life.
I've been looking for years - Its back in print!.......1999-12-08
I got this book out of the library a few years ago and enjoyed it so much I wanted to buy it but it was out of print. For a few moments I even considered paying the penalty and calling the book lost but I couldn't bear to deprive other library users of the book. So now its back... the techniques and theory are down to earth and very useful. I'm ordering 2 copies today.
Customer Reviews:
Best Technique Cookbook.......2005-09-04
When I recommend cookbooks to friends and students, this is the first one that comes to mind. It teaches techniques rather than dishes. Don't give a person a fish -- teach them how to fish. Or bake, roast, poach, braise, or saute. Out of print for years, Amazon is the best place to order it. I buy it for wedding presents and finally treated myself to a copy!
Next I'd go for Child/Bertholle/Beck Mastering the Art of French Cooking I and II, or for a cook who relates to photos, Julia Child's The Way To Cook.
Another interesting book is Len Deighton's (spy thriller writer) paperback entitled Basic French Cooking, which is also out of print but I got through Amazon.

Throw away your "Joys" and discover real ecstacy by learning the secrets of the greatest methods of food preparation. This book tells it all with recipes that illistrate the theory and put it into practice.
the best fundamental cook book written.......1998-03-09
If you are able to find a copy of this book, buy it, at least for a child who will be thankful for your courtesy when they discover all of its charm and benefits. With over twenty years experience as a professional chef, I have introduced my well worn copy to aspiring cooks of all ages. It is a wealth of information for all new cooks and it is to my dismay that I learn of it's being out of print.Bon appetit!

A little bit of everything!.......2003-01-11
When I first looked at this on the Amazon web site I was not sure about getting it because the pages you can see look to be designs from Egypt and I wanted more then that. I sent for it anyway and it has wonderful designs in full color plates from China, Japan, India, Russia, the Renaissance, Medieval jewelry designs and others. It has just a little bit (a few pages) of everything from ancient Egypt to 18th century France. It will be more then helpful in helping me decide what I like. I am sure this will be one of my most used books and as always I am happy with Dover for making it at a price I can afford.
Book Description
Powerfully evocative faces can be carved in tree bark. This guide offers lessons on the anatomy of the human face, information on carving tools and how to use them, sources of bark suitable for carving, and step-by-step instructions for the creation of four terrific "wood spirits," including the Cottonwood Sage, the Lady of the Cottonwood, the Two Grand Masters, and the Cottonwood Duo. Using these patterns as templates, carvers can alter different facial expressions to create unique relief carvings.
Customer Reviews:
Good very first book.......2007-06-19
This book is good for the very young and for those who know little if anything about carving. We wanted a book that goes quick after a particular project such as carving a nose or an ear or an eye but the book was very slow to complete a rather middle of the road project. We were searching for a book that effectively flows quicker than showing each stoke.
We wanted and expected to see more than a few particular woods that a carver would target for a particular project and the book fell short of our expectations.
GREAT INFORMATION.......2001-10-19
I'm just starting to carve and whittle. This book was recommended to me by a sales person at Woodcrafters as a good basic book. Was he ever right! It gave me the fundamentals I needed from making a bench hook, to finding the correct type and piece of wood right on through the carving. Made me feel like I could actually do this and not fumble around.

Book Description
In this richly illustrated volume, the artist's work and life are explored in depth and his renowned achievements in portraiture demonstrated in full.
Book Description
A finely crafted collection of climbing stories that promises to become a classic in the mountaineering genre.
This blend of imaginative fiction and nonfiction offers an alternative to today's personality-centered climbing writing
In this standout collection of the writings of Laura and Guy Waterman, readers will discover a rich blend of adventures great and small. Some fiction, some nonfiction, all these stories explore the basic impulse to climb and its roots in the underlying drives of remarkable individual climbers. One story, a fictionalized letter exchange between two ambitious female climbers of the Victorian Era-Fanny Bullock Workman and Annie Peck-captures the competitive spirit between them. The true story "A Night in Odell Gully" demonstrates "that serious climbers know, better than almost anyone else in our sheltered modern life, what death and dying means." This collection is certain to be a touchstone for all who are drawn to the mountains.
