5 out of 5 stars this lady is amazing! a genius!.......2007-07-10

marva collins is such an idol and inspiration for me. she is so full of morals and has a brilliant answer for all of life's problems. get this book if you want to hear the most intelligent things from the most intelligent human being walking the earth! she is HIGHLY underrated as an educator and everything! i really needed to find her b/c as she says, "in this slippery world we all need something to hold onto...." thank you Marva, I love you and God bless you!

5 out of 5 stars Marva is a teacher one would want for every child on earth!.......2007-03-24

I read about 70 pages of the book and unfortunately lost it during my travel. I will be buying this book again. Marva is an extraordinary teacher who has taught me at my middle age that NO CHILD CAN FAIL TO SUCCEED in school. She has achieved this with such re-sounding success that one would want to have a teacher like her for all children in the world. I have no words to express how great the feeling is when you know that every child has all the potential to succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Results!.......2007-02-05

I first read Marva Collins Way several years ago, and have reread it many times since, to help guide and clarify my thoughts about education. She has revolutionized public education, and people's perceptions of it. She has also effectively refuted the growing slew of people in the highest places
of academia who stubbornly cling to long-discredited theories about the intellectual inferiority of certain races in this country. I would recommend this book to anyone, and ask only that you read it at least twice, because it has too much to absorb, to just read it once. It will possibly alter your concept about education, and just who is capable of learning. If you use Marva's concepts as a teacher, I guarantee powerful results!

5 out of 5 stars Marva Collins' Way: Updated.......2006-07-20

I have been re-reading this book (0r parts of it) every year since I first read it in the 1980's -- it is an inspiration to anyone in the teaching profession. I also give it as a gift to the special teachers that I know or that have made a difference in my own childrens' lives.

5 out of 5 stars A classical homeschooler's view.......2005-07-15

I am a classical homeschooler. The average person who asks, "How are you teaching your children at home?" has never heard of classical schooling and doesn't want a lecture. But if you say, "Like Marva Collins," their face lights up. For over 25 years Marva Collins has been the most famous teacher in America, yet not one American in a thousand can tell you what her method is called, how to find a local school that uses it, or how to teach that way at home. That disconnection sums up America's educational crisis in a nutshell.

Marva Collins was reared the only child of a wealthy African-American family in segregated Alabama. She learned early on that only three things really mattered: your knowledge, your courage and your willingness to work hard. After graduating from college with a degree in Business, she found the only jobs available at that time to college-educated African-American women were as teachers. She eventually became an elementary school teacher and honed her craft with 14 years of public school teaching.

Marva Collins didn't follow any curriculum. She asked veteran teachers what worked and tested their recommendations in her own classroom. She discarded what didn't work and kept what did work, and what worked for her students was phonics and a "Great Books" approach to learning delivered with large doses of positive reinforcement and lectures on self-reliance, a method that had been named by others "classical schooling."

By the early 1970s the veteran teachers who had trained Marva Collins were retired, and the new administration did not support her intensive learning style. In 1974 the principal abruptly took her own class away from her in the middle of the year. The parents were enraged and the principal was forced to back down, but Marva Collins knew it was time to strike out on her own.

At the urging of neighborhood mothers, Marva Collins began a private school, first in the basement of the local community college, then on the second floor of her house. She started out with a handful of students in what used to be called a one-room schoolhouse and is now called a "cottage school." After a shaky start, the school got good press and good results with their students. New students and donations poured in, and within a few years Marva Collins found herself the principal of a sizeable and highly regarded prep school.

_Marva Collins' Way_ is an inspiration to everyone, but the book has great practical value to classical teachers and homeschoolers. For all the talk about classical methodology there are very few descriptions of how classical schooling can be taught. Half this book contains detailed accounts of events in Marva Collins' classroom, making it by far the most descriptive work I've yet found about classical schooling in action.

Mrs. Collins is a devout Christian, but it might well be that nonChristian parents benefit the most from her method. While her speech to teachers in the appendix is one Biblical allusion piled on top of another, the transcripts of her daily lessons with students show that she uses a multicultural approach which treats the Bible as one Great Book among many. It has been argued that the moral principals at the heart of classical schooling can't be taught without a religious core, specifically without a Christian core. In her classrooms Marva Collins organizes her lessons and her moral principals around a core of Emersonian self-reliance, specifically Getting Out of the Ghetto, instead of a Christian theme. This method could be very helpful to secular parents who wish to use classical homeschooling but who are put off by the relentless Christian focus of much of the available material.

I can find only two criticisms with this book. While Mrs. Collins frequently castigates teachers for the failure of their students, not once in the whole book does she hold principals and the administrative staff responsible for not supporting the teachers. This glaring omission comes in spite of years of research showing that a school's success or failure is directly dependent on the quality of backup teachers receive from principals, a fact that she mentions directly in her preface and that comes through clearly in her autobiography. Decades worth of educational reform have stumbled into that blind spot and failed completely; it's past time to bring it out into the open.

The other criticism I can make about Marva Collins' way is the lack of an organized system for introducing new material. The transcripts make it clear that Mrs. Collins herself doesn't need one. Like James Burke, she is brilliant enough to make the "Connections" between just about anything and just about anything else. But how many other teachers can do likewise? Not many. When I mentioned I was reading this book, a former teacher who had done her student teaching at Marva Collins Prep School mentioned that while she saw children given lots of work she could discern no overall structure being given to them for them into which to organize the information. Perhaps one wasn't available at that time. I know the authors of the classical homeschooling manual _The Well-Trained Mind_ have put out a series of instructional materials that can be used by classical homeschoolers and classrooms; hopefully their work will begin to address that problem.

The one fact that comes through the strongest in this book is that Marva Collins is a saint. She has the stamina, the passion, the higher purpose, the total commitment and the mission of a saint determined to save the hearts and minds of her children from the corrosive effects of the ghetto. Without the vision, drive and charisma of a saint new social movements all too often fail to get off the ground. But I was also reminded of William James speaking of the difference between a saint and a philosopher. The philosopher is the person who analyzes the teaches of the saint and writes them into a creed that the ordinary person can follow. We desperately need a philosopher to analyze Mrs. Collins work and turn it into a system that any halfway competent teacher could follow, so that we can save the rest of the children caught in the maw of the "school system".

Book Description

U.S. Secret Service Agent Harrison Raines is assigned to stand watch over Abraham Lincoln's closest friend-a Union Colonel. But when the officer is murdered in cold blood, Raines must follow the killer across enemy lines.

"Kilian offers clues for anyone wishing to guess the identity of the murderer, but also indulges in a case of misdirection that might nag at a genuine mystery buff for months." (Publishers Weekly)

"A can't-put-it-down book...A sense of urgency keeps the pace racing." (Rendezvous)

Michael Kilian has set an interesting goal for himself: to chronologically place Virginia gentleman and secret Pinkerton agent Harrison "Harry" Raines in the thick of every major battle of the Civil War and, once there, have him solve a mystery connected thereto. After Harry's fine debut in Murder at Manassas, A Killing at Ball's Bluff sees Harry assigned by the fledgling Secret Service to safeguard the life of Abraham Lincoln's best friend, Col. Edward Baker. But Baker, for reasons unknown, foolishly toys with mortal danger and not surprisingly stops a bullet. As Harry watches in horror from a short remove, a Southern officer appears from the mist, spurring headlong toward the fallen Baker.

Harry loosed a shot, but it was hasty and went wide, even though the mount and rider now seemed to tower over him. The officer yanked the animal to a sudden stop and, ignoring Harry, leaned down over Baker, his horse's chest almost in Harry's face.

There were five quick gunshots from the Confederate's weapon, and then the white horse and rider leaped and dashed away. Harry flung himself down to Baker's side--far, far too late. Every one of the five shots had found its mark. The president's friend was as dead as any man on that field.

This was not war, this was murder--but tell that to the marines. After all, Raines is a Southerner, an intimate of the infamous Southern spy, Rose Greenhow, the son of a plantation-owning slaveholder, and the brother of two Southern officers. And he lives at the National, the Washington hotel favored by secessionists. If you've guessed that, given these tidbits, Raines's Northern handlers are soon smiting their foreheads, yelling "Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!" you've guessed right. Harry's become a man without a country, wanted by both the North and the South, and it's up to him to solve Baker's murder or suffer the inevitable consequences.

Kilian guides his hero with much skill and ample wit. Major characters are finely limned, dialogue is lively and crisp, battle scenes are as engaging as they are truly frightening. It's a sure thing for John Jakes regulars, historical fans, and Civil War subgenre aficionados--and anyone else who likes their mysteries with a heavy dose of thrills. --Michael Hudson

4 out of 5 stars A Little Long Winded, But Still a Great Mystery.......2002-11-12

Harry Raines is finding life in Washington during the Civil War difficult. A Southerner opposed to slavery, he tries to stay as neutral as possible, even with his new job in the Secret Service. But trouble seems to find him. Someone's shooting at him on the street. Then he's assigned to guard Colonel Edward Baker, one of President Lincoln's best friends. This is a nearly impossible task in the midst of battle, but when the Colonel is killed in cold blood, Harry finds himself accused of the crime. Escaping from jail, he must stay one step ahead of his former co-workers to clear his name.

This novel, like its predecessor, provides a fascinating look at life during the Civil War. Real people are liberally sprinkled throughout, and I greatly enjoyed meeting their fictitious personas. I especially like the way Lincoln is portrayed in his few appearances. The fictitious characters are interesting as well. The plot itself seems to loose its way at times, but all the pieces to come together for a climax that includes some interesting twists.

With the characters being agents and counter-agents, the book takes on the feel of a spy novel at times. Yet, the plot includes enough interesting twists to make it a good mystery as well. Anyone interested in this time period will greatly enjoy this series.

1 out of 5 stars Plodding, implausible and mundanely written.......2001-07-21

The plot of this historical mystery lurches from one improbable point to the next: Confederate women in drag, badly characterized famous people from Lincoln to Rose Greenhow to Oliver Wendell Holmes, and dei ex machinae up the wazoo. Timing and pace here are severely flawed, leaving the reader wondering what just happened and why it matters. The "who did it", when we find it out, is too obvious. Yet characters' behavior and motivations, throughout, are not well founded. The essential theme, that of the Southern Unionist (described by the author as "neutral", inexplicably) who works as a secret agent for the North and whose loyalties are torn, is an interesting one, but it's not enough to keep this rusty ironclad afloat.

5 out of 5 stars Teriffic historicalmystery.......2001-01-09

In 1861, the initial encounter of the Civil War is fired at Fort Sumter and the South wins the first real encounter at Manassas. Harrison Raines, son of a Virginia plantation landholder who owns slaves, broke with his family and now resides in the federally controlled Washington DC. Area. In order to prove his loyalty to the northern cause and his anathema towards slavery, Harry allows Pinkerton to induct him as a captain in the newly formed Secret Service.

Few know what Harry does for a living as he acts as if he is a southern sympathizer. When he is almost killed, Harry retreats to his horse farm to wait safely for further instructions, which comes from his friend Templeton Saylor. Harry must go to Ball's Bluff to guard Colonel Baker, who dies anyway in the heat of battle. Harry is accused of treason and jailed, but escapes. He knows he is a man without a country neither the Union nor the Confederacy wanting him unless he can prove his innocence or guilt.

Although this novel is labeled a "Harrison Raines Civil War Mystery," the tale is really more a spy thriller than a who-done-it, though detective elements are in the tale. The plot contains agents, double agents, traitors, and an assortment of support cast abetting the spies. Actions run the gamut with dishonor not uncommon. Michael Kilian's novel contain some of the most fascinating war drama scenes, vividly and authentically described so that the audience can picture Spielberg saving Harry Raines.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were so unique, adding to the interesting plot with lots of surprises. Looking forward to the next in the series!

4 out of 5 stars Slow start with a great ending.......2006-04-08

The hero of the story, Ian, is one that almost anyone can relate to. Even though he has special abilities, they aren't so out of the normal that you feel he has an advantage in life.
A well written novel, with an almost classic feel to the reading. The story does develope the characters quite well, without over doing it. Some of the character's styles of speech get old, and is a bit much at times. Still the book was a great read, and will provide enjoyment for me in the future. Cannot wait for the next one. If you like this one, read "David and the Phoenix", by Edward Ormondroyd. An old classic newely reprinted!!!

    5 out of 5 stars great writing.......2005-08-29

I love this book. The author is very imaginative and you really see the characters and scenery as she does. It will spin a magical spell around you!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Simple help.......2007-05-12

This book is easy to understand for someone who is newly diagnosed and needs and introduction to adopting a lifestyle change in terms of eating. The suggestions are practical. The style of writing is casual and never intimidating.

    5 out of 5 stars Factual -- Understandable -- Helpful.......2007-01-09

Although the book was "written down" a bit, it gave basic information that was extremely helpful and understandable. With the anxiety that comes with a "maybe you are diabetic" conversation, it provided guidelines and attitude that took some of the panic away. Would certainly recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best beginniers guide to diabetes.......2006-03-21

Easy to understand, but very repetative and specific to the authors mother. Leaves many questions unanswered for the new diabetic but might make a good adjunct to some solid teaching materials.

Phyllis Barrier has over 25 years experience as a nutritionist and diabetes educator: her background lends to Type 2 Diabetes For Beginners: an especially important guide considering that most Type 2 diabetics receive the news later in life, long after habits are established. From meal planning and pre-diabetes diagnosis and indicators to blood sugar monitoring and weight loss, chapters provide very simple explanations and guidelines for standards of care. The simple approach allows the newly diagnosed to readily understand the myriad of concerns affecting the diabetic: Type 2 Diabetes For Beginners should thus be the first self-help handbook given to the new diabetic upon diagnosis.

                        Book Description

Enthusiasts of the venerable Mosin-Nagant bolt-action rifle, one of the most basic of the Russian and Soviet small arms, will find a wealth of information in the latest Soviet military manual translation by Maj. James F. Gebhardt. The manual, available in English for the first time, covers disassembly and assembly, cleaning and lubricating, and firing for zero at the specified zeroing range of 100 meters. Described in detail are all the steps, procedures and criteria that will ensure proper and safe function of the rifle or carbine. Also included are several data tables describing the ballistic performance of the 148-grain type-1908 projectile and the weight and length of the basic rifle and carbines in various configurations. For those interested in the sniper version of this rifle, an appendix describes both the PE and PU scopes. This is the ultimate source for Mosin-Nagant owners.

Despite its somber opening on the day in 1973 just after he buried his wife, Joan, this second volume of Neil Simon's memoirs is frequently as funny as his plays. The real estate agent who shows him and second wife Marsha Mason around Los Angeles reminds him so much of Sunset Boulevard's Norma Desmond, he remarks, "I immediately started looking around the car for the dead monkey." When he phones his brother and says, "Danny, I just won the Pulitzer Prize" (for Lost in Yonkers), Danny's response is, "Wait a second, I have to stop the water in my bath." If Simon harbored any malice, some of his wry barbs might really sting. Instead, he's gentlemanly and uncontrite about the failure of his marriage to Mason ("it takes two to untangle," he opines), and even more reticent about his relationship with wife number 3 who was also number 4, which didn't work out either time. Writing plays like Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound sparks more enthusiastic prose, and Simon's gushing about his three daughters is done in a manner so corny it's positively endearing. For a man who believes he became successful "by feeding off my own insecurities and sharing them with a world of people," Simon, at age 71, seems pretty well-adjusted. --Wendy Smith

                                              Book Description

In his critically acclaimed Rewrites, Neil Simon talked about his beginnings -- his early years of working in television, his first real love, his first play, his first brush with failure, and, most moving of all, his first great loss. Simon's same willingness to open his heart to the reader permeates The Play Goes On. This second act takes the reader from the mid-1970s to the present, a period in which Simon wrote some of his most popular and critically acclaimed plays, including the Brighton Beach trilogy and Lost in Yonkers, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. Simon experienced enormous professional success during this time, but in his personal life he struggled to find that same sense of happiness and satisfaction. After the death of his first wife, he and his two young daughters left New York for Hollywood. There he remarried, and when that foundered he remarried again. Told with his characteristic humor and unflinching sense of irony, The Play Goes On is rich with stories of how Simon's art came to imitate his life. Simon's forty-plus plays make up a body of work that is a long-running memoir in its own right, yet here, in a deeper and more personal book than his first volume, Simon offers a revealing look at an artist in crisis but still able and willing to laugh at himself.

I will make this short and sweet. If you are a Neil Simon fan, you need to read this book. I found it really interesting to peak into the life of Neil Simon as a human, not just a talented writer. In reading tis book you kind of lern the life experiences and nutrients that helped this creative man to entertain us with characters that we all love.

                                              2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Follow-On to "Rewrites".......2000-04-14

I was anxious to see the arrival of "The Play Goes On" as I had really enjoyed "Rewrites", but felt as though Simon had more to say, but hadn't been able to get to it in the first of this biographical series. However, this latest lacked the humor of "Rewrites" and I felt myself without much incentive to keep turning pages other than to get some insights to some of his lesser-known works.

4 out of 5 stars Take it for what it is.......2000-01-04

Neil Simon is best studied by reading and seeing interpretations of his plays, but since this book is an autobiography, it is interesting at the very least for seeing what the man's own perspective on his life has been. There are definitely some moments that appear repetitive and unnecessary, but as he says in the book, Mr. Simon was not keeping notes throughout his life with the knowledge that he would someday write a book. That means he and we are forced to rely on his memories and notions when they occur to him, which is why some of the book is out of sequence. I would have loved to have seen more insights into the plays and screenplays themselves, especially since he completely neglects to mention "Laughter On The 23rd Floor", which I saw twice on Broadway and laughed harder the second time than the first. He alludes to it once, but never says anything regarding the production even though he spends at least a few pages on some of his less-successful works. However, it's those exact pages on the lesser known stuff like "The Good Doctor", "Rumors", and "Jake's Women" that are so interesting.

Generally, I find it difficult to read biographies of people who are still with us, for the simple fact that that story can never be complete. One of the good things about the first volume of autobiography, Rewrites, was that it ended at a specific point in time with the death of Mr. Simon's first wife which represented the "end" of a chapter in his life and therefore lent itself to being presented as a complete story. I was impressed at how up to date The Play Goes On was, but how can even this be the definitive story of Neil Simon and his work unless he retires? Surely (and hopefully) Neil Simon has many more years and several plays ahead of him, so maybe he's just leaving open the option of doing a third book.

                                              2 out of 5 stars What a Whiner!.......1999-12-17

"Rewrites" was better than this effort because Neil Simon shared more insights into his creative process than this volume. In "The Play Goes On," he concentrates on whining over the breakup of his serial marriages -- while asking us to believe that nobody was ever responsible for his string of divorces. His explanation? That there's some kind of genetic marker that determines how long people stay married. PLEASE!

Simon also spends a good deal of time asking us to believe other whoppers; that his plays are not all autobiographical (I guess this is true... most -- but not all -- of his plays are that way); and that he has no memory of writing most of his plays, that they just came out of him in some kind of auto-pilot-like trance.

Anyone wanting to learn about Simon and his creative process is better off studying his plays.

4 out of 5 stars A Closer Look at the Theatre's Most Successful Playwright.......1999-11-23

"The Play Goes On" is a companion piece to Simon's first memoir, "Rewrites." Both books should be read in succession to get a full picture of the artist as a man. They provide not only a look at the life of the most successful playwright in the history of the American theatre, but also valuable insights into his writing process. "The Play Goes On" begins right where the first volume left off, just following the death of Neil Simon's beloved first wife, Joan. It covers his marriage and professional collaboration with Marsha Mason and brings us almost completely up to date in the chronological summary of his works. This book (and the one that came before it) are fabulously entertaining owing to the deft skill with which Simon weaves words together. Put this in someone's Christmas stocking!
