Book Description
Called "essentially practical & practically essential," Ross Lowell's critically acclaimed Matters of Light & Depth is now being published by Lowel-Light. Filled with illustrations, photographs, and decades of real world experience, the book has become a valuable resource for all those interested in expanding their knowledge of lighting.
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating (okay, okay, that's pretty bad, but the book isn't).......2007-10-06
For those of us who seem mystified by why their videos look so...well, bad, Matters of Light and Depth offers valuable insights into the subtle and not so subtle qualities of light. Some of the material presented looks at still photography, and some takes advantage of classic artists whose tools were oil paint and canvas. All in all, while Matters of Light and Depth does not offer a "by the numbers" approach to lighting scenes, it does provide strong aesthetic considerations, as well as pithy quotations from people who "do lighting." It's worth looking at. And the glossary is entertaining, as well. Basically, you just can't beat something from Ross Lowell.
Great guide for great lighting.......2007-03-29
In a few words, this book is a must read for begginers and proffesional individuals that find themselves quite lost within the vast challenges of visual arts.It is a great guide for capturing great lighting into film, video or any other medium. Mr.Ross Lowell has set some high standards and has created numerous great lighting techniques, which shares with us, inside his well organised book.
My only comment will reffer to the small print in the letters of the book.
Great!!
One of my favorite lighting books!.......2007-02-17
Let me say up front that I view the book from the prospective of a photographer, though it does cover film and video lighting also. This book is an easy read and offers a great balance technical information and practical applications of technique. The exercises presented at the end of the book work well to illustrate many of the lessons in previous chapters and show the reader first-hand the subtleties of lighting technique. "Matters of Light & Depth" is in my top ten favorite photography books along with "Creative Still Life Photography" By Bruce Pendleton, and "Learning to Light: Easy and Affordable Techniques for the Photographer" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz
Great book on lighting.......2007-02-09
It is wonderful book on lighting with lot of practical advice. I very much liked the descripion of geting started with lighting - by standing where you plan to place the light and imagine what a hard light would do and a soft light would do from that position and place light based on that visualization. Also, the chapter on 'Method lighting' is very interesting.
Excellent Survey & Starting Point.......2007-01-04
This is a great starter book to get if you have never done any lighting before - whether for video, cinema, or still photography. Lots of great tips and tricks that typically are missing from other lighting books. Lowell takes the concepts and precepts of lighting and presents them in abstract form so that you can adapt them to whatever lighting situation you may have. This book may not work for you if you are the kind of person who needs step by step how-to in order to get things done - in fact it is debatable that ANY book could do so effectively because every shoot is unique. But if you are good at thinking intuitively and abstractly then his presentation of the material is great because it teaches principals (with some examples) and not technique.
My one complaint is the typsetting of the book. The use of a modern typeface makes reading difficult (looks like a bodoni variant). The publishers should really re-publish the book to make it more legible.
Book Description
Newly promoted to detective first-grade with the NYPD, Jane Bauer, is back to work after a nearly fatal run-in with a killer. But while she’s happy to be back on the job, her new assignment–another cold case–seems to hold little promise of being solved.
Eight years ago, Anderson Stratton, a schizophrenic, was found dead of starvation in his apartment. Nothing on the scene indicated foul play, and although he left no note, the death was ultimately ruled a suicide. Stratton’s well-connected sister, Flavia Constantine, never accepted that conclusion, and has insisted that the case be reopened. But in their investigation, Jane and her team stumble upon another grisly suicide–and realize that the two may very well be connected. As her inquiry intensifies, Jane is led to a shocking and horrible truth–and once again finds herself on the threshold of death.
Customer Reviews:
Solving a cold case creates another case.......2006-04-26
Eight years ago, Andrew Stratton starved to death. That was the official cause of death of the cold case Jane Bauer, NYPD, and her two partners are assigned to investigate. His prominent sister has gotten the brass to reopen the case.
As they investigate and begin tracking down people in his past, they discover the suicide of his social worker. Things don't add up and soon they discover it was murder. They continue investigating and trying to discover what really happened to Andrew and his social worker. And what were they involved in.
I really enjoy this series by Lee Harris. Jane Bauer is a great detective and I like the way she works and thinks. Generally, I read more light mysteries (generally called cozies), but this is one police procedural that I always read. The characters are well written and the stories are interesting. There is enough police action but without all the gore of other authors.
I highly recommend this book and series.

Nice second entry in NY Detective Jane Bauer set -- interesting cold case solved!.......2005-10-10
We were delighted to see this second entry in the Jane Bauer series about a NYPD Detective and her two sidekicks that specialize on cold cases. As the author's ex-nun Chris Bennett series seems to sputter a little, this new character is a welcome change from Lee Harris; one that features a somewhat grittier storyline and less family machinations than the "holiday" set. As with other reviewers, though, we do agree that Jane's ten-year affair with a married man (Hack) seems out of character, and a rather unwelcome twist to what we presume to be the author's values on such matters...
In the fine storyline, a mentally troubled man (Stratton) is dead from apparent self-starvation. His prominent sister, with connections high up in the NYPD, wants the case re-opened eight years later, as she never accepted it as a suicide. When Jane and partners Defino and MacHovec start interviewing people and chasing now-distant clues, a suicide of the man's case worker is discovered, which seems way too coincidental to the cops. Eventually that latter death is ruled a murder, and that case is reopened as well. Most of the book then actually pursues that crime and its real circumstances, outcome, and perpetrators to a somewhat surprising conclusion that significantly endangers Bauer. Possibly the only dissatisfaction to the novel is the somewhat unresolved status of Stratton's death.
We seem to enjoy Harris' mysteries and feel she is on the right track to promote Bauer's exploits and maybe let the other series fade away. If she can dream up further interesting cases and maybe fix Bauer's love life while she's at it, we predict she can pump out another dozen or so stories in this set! Not bad for an author with some forty books (under various names) already under her belt!
good read.......2005-04-12
This book was a good enough and enjoyable read, however it didn't really truly satisfactorily solve the crime it tells you about on the back cover, which actually led to the one they spend most of the book on, which they finally figure out in the last 3 pages.
A few things in this book bothered me-1 there was more profanity they necessary, which I could have happily done without; and 2 the love interest in the book (which she doesn't even really tell you anything about his personality at all except to say he's everything she could ever want) is MARRIED and they having been having an affair for 10 YEARS--excess and stupid and wrong--she needs someone else and I don't see why the author had him as the love interest, or the excess foul language, unless she was tired of the holy ex-nun and went overboard with change.
Other than those 2 annoying things the book was enjoyable enough-as I did still want to read it all the way through, overall a good "rainy Tuesday morning" read, but go with the free library version on this one, unless you find it somewhere cheap.
Great Series.......2005-02-21
With the Christine Bennett series getting stale, this is a wonderful alternative. With Jane being a NYPD detective, the stories are a lot more plausible and the writing just seems to be on a much higher level.
The only thing I don't like about the series is Jane's relationship with Hack. She comes across as such an intelligent, self-sufficient heroine in the books that it's disappointing to see her acting like a lovesick schoolgirl over a married man. Hopefully, as the series progresses, Hack will become history and Jane will find a real romance.
Avery dynamic and exciting police procedural.......2004-12-05
After taking some time off to recover from her encounter with a serial killer, New York Police Department Detective First Grade Jane Bauer returns to duty in time to work a cold case with her two partners. Power broker Flavia Constantine wants the police to reopen the case of her brother Anderson Stratton who supposedly committed suicide eight years ago. She demands the police prove it was murder and find the perpetrator.
After doing multiple interviews, Jane discovers a link between Stratton, his social worker Erica Renzler and building superintendent Larry Vale. Jane assumes that Erica visited Stratton as an excuse to talk to Vale. Eight years ago Erica also supposedly committed suicide after she quit her job at social services; Jane thinks the two deaths are linked. When she finds Erica's secret postal box with hidden records hinting that she was involved in something illegal, both cases are officially reopened as murder investigations. Someone doesn't want the police investigating and someone named Bill Fletcher takes off with the daughter of Jane's partner. When that doesn't cause the detective to back off, someone tries to kill Jane.
This is a very dynamic and exciting police procedural. The author gives the audience a step-by-step insight into an ongoing investigation so that readers see how a case is solved. Jane is a remote individual so it is hard to warn up to her but nobody can doubt her dedication to solving the case especially after her two partners are deeply affected by one of the perpetrators. Lee Harris can always be counted on to give her fans an exciting mystery although her Manhattan mysteries are darker and grittier than the Christine Bennet tales.

Book Description
Officials from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control have reported that the overuse of antibiotics in medicine has created an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Doctors fear that if antibiotic use is not curtailed, we may soon approach the day when untreatable infections are rampant. In Beyond Antibiotics, Drs. Schmidt, Smith, and Sehnert explore the problems presented by the overuse of these drugs. More importantly, they show how to build immunity, improve resistance to infections, and avoid antibiotics when possible.
Customer Reviews:
Unsubstantiated Hooey.......2000-10-24
Hoping to find some real alternatives to antibiotics, I was sorely disappointed. This book is just the same old "naturalist" magical thinking. Filled with wild, unsubstantiated claims both against antibiotics (and doctors in general) and for a "natural" lifestyle, the authors put forth the same tired thesis: Eat only vegetables, move out of the city, and consume vitamin C in doses equivalent to 2000 oranges a day and you'll never get sick." They do offer some natural aid to alleviate symptoms when the magic inevitably fails, but no real remedies to help your body kill bacteria. Their theory appears to be that bacteria are a figmet of the modern hypochondriac's imagination.
If you're sick, go to the doctor. Don't waste your money on this book.
EXCELLENT!!!.......1999-06-14
I work in the Health and Fitness field.I am also an athlete who exercises, eats perfectly and takes appropriate vitamins.....but for as long as I can remember I always had some sort of cold or cough at least once a month and guaranteed illness after serious athletic competition. The Doctors felt it was because of my work and my exposure to 100`s of people a day, and in a way they were right. The true problem was the stregnth of my immune system. Now 6 months since I read the book,I havent been sick a single day!The chapter on Vitamin C had the strongest effect on my current state of "Wellness". My thanks to the Authors ! Outstanding !
Great Book.......1998-03-29
Book had a lot of useful information and was easy to read. I highly recomend it!

Customer Reviews:
Love this book!.......2007-09-25
I've had this book for 15 years, now. Some of the recipes use unusual ingredients, but they're always easy to find and surprisingly delicious! I love the anecdotes and advice for leftovers.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE COOKBOOK!!.......2005-03-21
This was a wedding gift for my husband and me, who love to cook. This is a good balance of both meatless and meat recipes. We have learned to cook so many different "beans and rice" recipes that are delicious - and the ingredients match the basics we have in our pantry. We have often resorted to this book for "last-minute" dinners when we haven't been to the store or made up a menu. Our kids love the recipes, since Ms. Urvater thoughtfully mentions ways to work in milder versions of many recipes. Finally, the ideas for leftovers that follow many recipes are invaluable. I would highly recommend this cookbook and is a favorite one to give as a gift.
Great for Inexperienced Cooks!!.......2004-10-22
I have about 10 cookbooks (including popular "The New Basics") and this one is by far my favorite. As someone fairly new to cooking in general, it meets all my major requirements: 1) not too many ingredients per recipe; 2) ingredients you can actually find in the grocery store (or even in the pantry); 3) simple instructions (no fancy cooking skills necessary to produce high-quality end product); 4) recipes don't take hours to complete; and 5) includes suggestions for things to eat with the dish & what to do with leftovers.
I am a slow and deliberate cook, so I generally plan for it to take me twice as long as the timing guideline offered by the author, but even I can pull off most of the recipes in less than 1.5 hours.
Every recipe I've ever tried from this book has tasted delicious. Highly recommend it.
Life Changing Experience.......2003-07-31
Who knew that one cookbook would add variety to my diet, make me look forward to food shopping, teach me how to make quick, nutritious meals, and enable me to throw a wonderful dinner party! I highly recommend Ms. Urvater's book to anyone who loves food and has a hectic schedule. Her recipes make any novice seem like an expert. They are also Weight Watcher friendly for any members looking for flavor and options.
If you are in the market for a new cookbook or if you are looking for the perfect gift, make sure that it is Monday to Friday. The meals will impress family, friends, and most important, yourself.
Oh my god!.......2002-10-21
I found this book in the garbage near my home - being half Italian, I usually judge someone who claims to know how to cook by whether or not they know what a good pasta sauce is supposed to be like. OK, so here goes an example of one of the frequent disasters in this volume:
Meat Sauce
1 onion, 2 bell peppers, oil, 1 lb. of ground meat, 1 28 oz can of plum tomatoes, 1 tsp oregano, salt + pepper.
If you think that's a good recipe, you're pathetic.
I can already see in my head what a tasteless meaty mess this would make. What, no garlic? No basil? Only one can of tomatoes? Doesn't she know oregano is for pizza sauce? How come I'm not writing these books?
A recipe for "white and green seafood pasta sauce" is equally bad, as well as many others - I don't know who is giving raves to these recipes, but I don't wanna eat at their house.
Maybe it's because my mom studied recipes and knew something about cooking that I can be a bit more critical of a book that people who grew up on canned Chef-boy-ar-dee and Spam think is great. Maybe it's because I used to drag out cookbooks when I was a kid and practice with them and know a bit about cooking myself. If you are basically retarded in the area of cooking, I guess any cook book, even this one, looks good. This food is the kind of stuff you can get away with selling to the general public, or serving to guests, in a place like Seattle. If you are living in a sophisticated area, don't bother. You'll end up looking like a rube. Or an Englishman.

Good Colorful Book.......2007-04-01
I enjoyed looking thru this book to get ideas of the different kinds of dolls to add to my collection. There were a lot of dolls that I didn't know existed untill I read this book.
Superb Black Doll Collecting Guide.......2004-01-05
Debbie Garrett's "The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls" is a magnificent combination of beauty, knowledge, and cultural celebration! It was wonderful learning about the history of antique and vintage black dolls, as well as the current artists and their creations. This guide provides a fabulous array of delightful pictures denoting the significance of black doll collecting, that is both informative and inspiring!
A Black Doll Collector's Dream Come True.......2003-09-18
It is the answer to all Black doll collector's dreams! I have a number of "doll" books and magazines but none of them have ALL color Black doll photos in additon to valuable collecting information such as that found in this book. I must confess that initially, I looked through it four times on the day it arrived. It's fun seeing how many of the pictured dolls I have in my own collection!
Educational, Gained Knowledge and Breathtaking.......2003-08-17
This book epitomizes true Black Dollizing (New Word). It is truly thorough and precise that even the beginning novice can follow, understand and gain immediate knowledge, as well as adding to the understanding and knowledge of the seasoned Black Doll collector. I have now gained a better understanding to my own knowledge of Black Dolls, so much so that I now have a renewed energy and drive to learn more and more. The pictures and layouts are outstanding and beautiful. I physically feel the energy, and especially the love that each layout and picture was given. This book definitely continues and updates the two Black Doll books by Myla Perkins and is a deffinate asset to any Black Doll Collector. Can't wait for Book II, III and IV. I know the author has that much more knowledge to give us and I shall wait patiently. Thanks Debbie and keep up the excellent work. Rose Hawkins, Connecticut

Customer Reviews:
An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf!!.......2002-06-12
I bought this book after looking at it for about 20 seconds. I was not disappointed. Its' main topic is making tassels out of beads, however in the course of describing, making, and displaying her creations in this book, there arise a lot of different and unusual tricks, techniques and ways with beads. This book is great if you want to make beaded tassels; if you work with beads and need some new ideas and inspirations; or, if the creative well is running dry and you need to graze in some new territory. I do work with beads in peyote, sculptural peyote, Ndebele, brickstitch, squarestitch and wired floral work. I found the instructions in this book for the beading techniques quite good, however, if you have no experience in the above techniques and intend to learn the techniques from this book I don't think that will work. You do need prior knowledge with at least peyote stitch and brick stitch to make many, but not all of the tassels described. Other than that, which is more of a heads up than a critisism, I would highly recommend this book to any and all beadworkers and creative persons everywhere. An excellent and valued addition to my beading bookshelf.

COUNTRY HOUSES OF MAJORCA.......2001-01-18
Discover the secret, hidden side to the island, where private houses quietly exist behind thick walls of olive trees, protected from curious gazes of tourists. The island, located near Ibiza off the Mediterranean coast of Spain, is the sort of place dreams are made of. Only a lucky few have turned such a dream into reality, and Country Houses of Majorca is your chance to see the stunning evidence in pictures. This is the side of Majorca only seen by those who live there, enjoying daily the luxury of not only the lush scenery but also the rich Majorcan culture and sumptuous cuisine (which you can test for yourself thanks to the house owners' favorite recipes we've included in the book.) The 260 photographs highlight the island's most impressive homes, including many undiscovered houses not published until now. Among these treasures you'll find Frederic Chopin and George Sand's one-time winter hideaway, a tiny fisherman's cottage miraculously perched on the island's southeast cliffs, and the beautiful, old, antique-filled "fincas" restored by Nona von Haeften and her husband, Wolfgang Siegfried Wagner, great grandson of composer Richard Wagner. Let yourself be seduced by the country houses of Majorca - you won't regret the experience, even if it sends you into fits of envy

In this first book that looks at the work of one of the movies'most beloved comedy teams.Prof(Now Dr.)John McCabe gives some insight into Laurel And Hardy's film work.As he explains the evolution of Stan Laurel's approach to comedy and methiods to creating and performing comedy skits. The Prof. also looks at the boyhood days of Oliver Norvell(Babe)Hardy and his unconventional approach to performing comedy and the development of his singing talent.
The book also looks at the team's vintage years at The Hal Roach Studios and their forgetable film series at Fox and MGM During the war years. It also recalls the team's successful performances at The Music Halls and Cabrets of Europe and Stan Laurel creating funny comedy skits and seeing the team's rebirth during the early days of tv.As he became an idol to many kids of the tv generation(Myself included). While the book doesn't go into great depth about the complete creation of the team's film work.It does show us all how L&H worked at creating and presenting their classic comedic characters and their approach to spoofing man's foilbels. And it shows us Prof.McCabe's love and admiration for both men and for their wives:Ida Laurel(Stan's fourth wife) and Lucille Hardy(Babe's third wife)and their love for their work and for life.If you ever wanted a book that shows a positive look into the physce of two funny and charming people? This is The One movie bio to have.Bravo Jack.Kevin S.Butler.

Laurel & Hardy fans will love this book. I certainly did. The warmth and affection that John McCabe had for both Stan and Ollie comes through on every page. While the focus is more on Laurel, Hardy comes off well in the chapters devoted to him.
I wish there had been more pictures, but the text more than made up for it. Don't be surprised if you find yourself whistling the "cukoo song" while reading this book. The "boys" are gone, but the laughter they created is still with us, unlike the current crop of "comedians".

I wish they'd put Stan and Ollie back on TV to show another generation how wonderful these two are. There's no doubt that they remain as funny today as they did back in their prime. I'm a big fan and have many of their DVD's. I wanted to know about the duo and this book informed me greatly.
Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy is a riveting biography of the two men. It took me only a few hours to get through. It concentrates mostly on Stanley who was the creative genius behind the pair, but this only heightens interest in the chapter on Ollie, which is written in interview form. I liked the way the book started with Laurel failing miserably on his first attempt at performing, with his Dad in attendance. His perseverence was incredible as he subbed for Chaplin during the early days before hard work and the luck to be partnered with Mr Hardy, finally garnered him some success.
The book, written after many interviews with Stan, has got a very appealing narrative. We get insights into the making of their films, answering questions about how the pair came together and how most of their routines got started. It's very enlightening.
What I found most surprising was the undercurrent of emotion throughout. Its author obviously had a wonderful adoration for the pair and Stan, while speaking to him is very nostalgic about the past. I love the parts where Stan met Chaplin after many years, after they both had made it. And where, years after their filmic success, when they were touring Europe, the church bells in Cobh played out their theme tune.
If you have any interest in Laurel and Hardy, you must get this book.
A Good Primer.......2001-11-03
This was the first book about everyone's favourite comedy couple. I recently read it for the fourth or fifth time and felt inspired to recommend it at Amazon. McCabe interviewed both comics and knew Laurel for years. As an overview and appreciation of the Laurel and Hardy career this is still the best book to start with. Those more seriously interested will find a number of excellent books on the subject written in more recent years. I recommend 'Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy' enthusiastically to all fans.

A great book. If you are a Laurel & Hardy fan get this book. Very few pictures but a lot of quality information. A realistic look at team team's early years, hayday and then fall after leaving Hal Roach. It is obvious John McCabe loves Laurel & Hardy. A GREAT BOOK.
