Book Description

"All I Need In This Life of Sin is Me & My Boyfriend"

Here comes a honey colored, hazel-green eyed St. Louis bombshell named Meesa. With money in the bank, designer clothes in her closet and true friends by her side, Meesa still longs for more. All of her life she's wanted for one thing and one thing only, love. When she meets the infamous Black, a street pharmacist from the North side of The Lou, finally love is in her grasp.

Follow Meesa and Black, this century's new notorious Bonnie and Clyde, through the roller coaster ride that their tight to death relationship brings. From ups, downs, love, hate, lies, abuse and murder, they go through it all. Like the saying goes: everything that looks good to you ain't always good for you. But in the end, love always conquers all...doesn't it?

Very in to the urban book era, this book was very enjoyful and unlike some readers I actually paid attention to the dates of the writer, which is where I see people got confused on age and times or whatnot. I would definitely recommend this book to other urban book readers

    3 out of 5 stars ~Thumbs Down~.......2005-05-09

This fiction book is about a boy named Andy,15, who tries to juggle school and chores around the house. Since his mom got a job, he and his two older sisters, Dennie and Molly, all have to take and pick up their younger, six year old twin sisters from school. When his grandmother's house catches on fire, she moves in with them, and his life gets a little more complicated. After that, she accidentally runs over a man and they fall in love! Their dating gets serious and they want to get married. However, Andy's dad doesn't like Grams's new guy. Will they ignore him, or elope to Reno?
What I thought about the book:
It's a good book because it hows how anyone's life can get complicated and shows that you have to be understanding of your family. Personally, I had mixed feelings about the book beacause I didn't really see anything "sparkely" in it. Also, the main character was a boy so it was a little hard to get into the story.

4 out of 5 stars Grams, Her Boyfriend, My Family, and Me.......2001-04-24

This book explains how life can be complicated in some ways. Grams, Her Boyfriend, My Family, and Me gives a picture in kids minds of how life is about. It shows that you will have to take some responsibilities as you get older. It also says that there are some decisions that will be difficult to make. Some that you don't want to make but you have to. Some of the decisions are very big and some of them are not. You may regret some but that is the way it goes. This book goes through some decisions both big and small that some people will have to make in their lives. This book also has some difficulties that go on that could happen to people.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Ugly and Very Funny.......2005-05-24

This is your modern day british crime novel with all the requisite gore. It is also one of the funniest books I have ever read, with a mixture of witty smart mouth one liners ala Myron Bolitar and farcical Tom Sharpe style comic moments. The crime novel is gripping, the comedy induces hysterical laughter and the one liners make you wish you were that sharp - this is all in one electric package. The story set in Edingburgh involves corruption in the National Health system, an ugly murder and a hitman who bites off the victims fingers before stuffing them up his nostrils. Our hero Jack is a journalist (strange in itself)who escaped LA to avoid a hitman who was after him. He then arrives in his home town of Edinburgh to find the guy in the appartment below has been murdered. Jack to avenge the prior attempt on his life gets involved in this helter skelter ride to help the police catch the crooks with amazing consequences. Quite Ugly One Morning is entertainment nothing more, but superb entertainment at that.

            4 out of 5 stars Genuinely Enjoyable.......2005-02-25

Christopher Brookmyre was born in Glasgow in 1968 and has worked in Edinburgh, London and LA as a journalist. "Quite Ugly One Morning", his debut novel, was first published in the UK in 1996 and won the inaugural "First Blood" award for the best first crime novel of the year.

Jack Parlabane, the book's hero, is a journalist whose career started in Glasgow. He was eventually headhunted by one of London's broadsheets, before realising his brand of investigative journalism was steering him towards serious trouble. He quickly fled to LA - where he made exactly the same mistake again (only, this time with the rather higher chance of getting killed). As the book opens, he's only been back in Edinburgh for around thirty-six hours. (While Brookmyre's travels have been very similar to Parlabane's, I have no idea how much trouble the author's career as a journalist brought him. However, I am assured that all characters in this book are fictitious and any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidental). Unfortunately, unknown to Parlabane, one of his new neighbours - later identified as Jeremy Ponsonby - has been murdered. Ponsonby was a doctor, and a member of a well-known Edinburgh medical family. The book opens with the arrival of Inspector McGregor at the exceptionally messy and slightly bizarre murder scene. Parlabane is later caught at he scene with his trousers down (quite literally) by DC Jenny Dalziel, one of McGregor's team. Gradually, after a few more chance meetings with Dalziel and Sarah - the corpse's ex-wife - Parlabane starts looking into the murder.

While there are some fairly disgusting scenes - particularly the opening - Brookmyre has written a fast-moving, funny and thoroughly enjoyable book. I was reminded, in parts, of Ian Banks and Kinky Friedman (although there aren't quite as many one-liners as your average Kinky book). There are a few Scottish words and phrases used here and there - "jobbie" and "keech", for example, are used in the first chapter. However, with the way Brookmyre has written, there shouldn't be any difficulty in working out exactly what he's referring to. Highly recommended !

            4 out of 5 stars Brookmyre's sterling ear.......2004-07-24

Brookmyre has an ear for dialogue and the absurdities of daily life in Scotland that takes us back to Scott's "The ANTIQUARY." Nothing is too big or too small for him to lampoon, but with love. He takes a long walk around each of his targets, then closes in, and then--wham. It's nothin' but dust. Not only that, but he can whip up a good crime plot without even breaking a sweat. The banter between his hero and his attractive co-workers is always funny, reminding me of early episodes of the US cult hit MOONLIGHTING, before it lost its cutting edge and went soft.

I suppose that's the danger Christopher Brookmyre faces, because along with his current adulation a little bit of softening is bound to creep in like termites in an old house. Never mind, soon he'll be satirizing himself . . . "quite ugly one morning."

4 out of 5 stars Fun Cartoony Crime Novel.......2003-01-22

I first read Brookmyre in the Fresh Blood 2 anthology, where his story "Bampot Central" had me in stitches (the story is also posted on Brookmyre's website). I then read his book to be publishedin the US, "Not the End of the World," which is a fairly predictable Los Angeles-set thriller, suitable for a long rainy night or airplane, but little else. I thought I'd give him one more chance to wow me with this, his prize-winning first novel.

I have to say, I'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about when they throw out terms like "noir", "pulp", or "Irvine Welsh" when talking about this book. I mean, it is a crime story, and it is set in Edinburgh, and there are a (very) few Scottish idioms, but otherwise it's a pretty mainstream crime novel, heavily laced with humor. It's not noir at all, it's not Irvine Welsh at all (unless you think Irvine Welsh invented black humor), and it's only pulp in the Quentin Tarantino sense, which is to say, hip postmodern neo-pulp. There are some rather gory scenes at the beginning and end, but it's all handled with so much comedy and wisecracking that it's more cartoon show than horrorshow. Think Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiassen rather than Raymond Chandler or James M. Cain.

In any event, the story is a mostly enjoyable tale about corruption within the National Health Trust system. Hero investigative journalist Jack Parlabane literally stumbles into a cover-up murder and then teams up with a female cop and the murder victim's ex-wife to get to the bottom of it all. Fast-paced, with some memorable villains (the shell-suited hitman is a riot), and plenty of digs at Thatcheism and privatization schemes, it's a fun read with plenty of one-liners, but unlikely to make a lasting impression.

5 out of 5 stars Upcoming British Star!.......2002-06-14

I believe this was Brookmyre's first book and got me hooked on his writing. For American readers, one word of advice: just schlog through the first chapter! He writes in Scottish-accent so the beginning might be difficult to get into, but, please please, persevere, it is worth it. I laughed out loud - laughed so much I started crying! I have passed the book around to several friends and they all loved it. The story is absolutely crazy and amusing. Brookmyre has written several new books, but I still like this one the best. It is so, in your face and you will never read anything like this again!

A friend loaned me these a long time ago. I had forgotten the title, until a bit of isfdb query writing and some browsing taking a guess at the year found it again. Awesome, over the top super powered fantasy action. If you like the girly David Eddings heroes are more scared of the shrewish tongues of their girlfriends than the Dark Demon Lord, than this is very likely not for you.

It is dangerous to be a good guy. Very dangerous. Demon Lords (and Lordesses) are BAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.

Based around Celtic mythology I highly recommend these two books as a blast. A pity he never finished the series, maybe one day?

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-05-16

Fast paced with twists and turns. This is a terrific fantasy book and the sequel to Desecration. The only problem is that the series will never be finished. Mr. Perry went on to other things after the books did not do well enough for the publisher to continue. It would be nice to have completion, but their are not enough fans to warrant it.

Just a quick call to Mr. Perry to please finish this absolutely amazing series. I have been reading sci-fi/fantasy for about 25 years now, and would be hard pressed to come up with a title that surpasses the Morigu series. So if you ever read this stuff Mr. Perry, i am sure i am not alone in praying that we get to finish your great fantasy series.

5 out of 5 stars Please finish the Series.......2004-03-17

Mr. Perry, please finish this series. I have been dying for more of these books. These books are exciting, intoxicating, and extremely addicting. I have owned both of these books for over ten years and will until I die. They blend action, horror, drama, and the struggle of the human spirit in one powerful story. For anyone who likes science fiction these books are a must read, heck for anyone who just likes a good story these are a must read. I think everyone should own these books. In my opinion they easily rank with the Edding's Belgeraid, Jordan's Wheel of Time, and yes *gasp* Lord of the Rings Hopefully the author is really alive, and not deceased as rumor has it, and the publishing industry is smart enough to put more of his work in print. So please Mr. Perry, KEEP WRITING, WE WILL KEEP READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars An Important and Useful addition to Any Herbalist's Library.......2007-04-02

One of my favorite subjects for research is the lore associated with any given herb. It is a great pleasure to read this book and discover the lore together with the remedial uses, all beautifully presented with a wealth of lovely illustrations. Each herb is carefully described and lovingly presented. The long section on the herbalist as magickal practitioner is useful as well as interesting. The appendices are very helpful and the thoroughness of this book is demonstrated throughout all of its well written pages.

5 out of 5 stars Really good reference book.......2007-02-23

This is a great book with several different ways to classify the herbs. The detailed information on magickal and medicinal uses of herbs is very helpful. The book is well layed out, easy to reference & very interesting to read. A must have for all who are interested in herbs.

CONS: not extremely technical in terms of chemical components or nutrients in herbs

I have repeatedly heard nothing but good things about this book from others involved in herbalism and the use of herbs in a neopagan manner. I finally broke down and purchased a copy for myself as a Yule gift, and I was not disappointed at all. The book contains handy references according to traditional magical uses for the herbs described, in addition to traditional medicinal uses for the herb. I find that this book expounds upon information one might have already gathered from other books on the subject of magickal herbalism, but is also handy for a beginner in that everything is clearly explained and at no time is the language as such to lose or confuse a beginner.

I seriously recommend this book and the author to anyone interested in the subject of herbalism and magickal uses of herbs. I look forward to adding another well-reviewed title by this author on the subject to my collection soon. If you loved Cunningham's Encylopedia of Magical Herbs, you simply MUST add this to your library as a companion edition. The two books work well together.

5 out of 5 stars A complete handbook of herbs.......2006-08-18

This is an older book and I was pleased to be able to find a used copy on amazon. It is a very comprehensive book about the many uses of a wide variety of herbs.

                5 out of 5 stars IMMACULATE!.......2006-05-22

This is an AMAZING book on both the metaphysical/magickal and medicinal/holistic properties of a variety of herbs. It was written at the same time as Cunningham's Herbal Encyclopedia (AKA the BIBLE!), and independently from his works. It includes things Cunningham's does not, and vice-versa. The two are complimentary and should NOT sit on a Pagan's bookshelf alone. I regret not discovering this until just now! Recommended HIGHLY.

                    Book Description

This release is not only an identification and value guide to hundreds of primitive tools, furniture and household items, it is also a look at life in days gone by. Loaded with information and filled with photographs on primitives, this book is a must for primitive collectors. 1998 values. AUTHORBIO: Kathryn McNerney was well-known for her expertise in many fields of antiques and collectibles, including kitchen antiques, antique tools, primitives, blue white stoneware, American oak and Victorian furniture, and antique iron. Her books saw many revised editions, and her books became standard references in the field. She left behind many followers who continue to consult her books and who have made them part of their permanent libraries. REVIEW: This book pays tribute to our American heritage and shows how primitive collectibles changed and progressed from the frontiers into the 1890s. Not only are current values given for the items, but descriptions on what the items were used for, in an "old-timey" style, are given by the author. A very interesting look at our past.

I came across this beautiful book completely by accident. Never having done counted cross stitch before, I was intrigued by the simple, elegant designs. I have completed five and probably will continue until I have done them all. What a refreshing change from bunnies, cartoon characters etc... Matted and framed each design is truly a work of art. Thank you, Inga Bergfeldt

If you're tired of those for-sale ads in your local newspaper hawking three-bedroom split-levels and "charming" fixer-uppers and want to feast your eyes on some real real estate, check out this sumptuously illustrated and eruditely narrated revue of perhaps the eighteen most dazzling crash pads of Western civilization. Architecture scholar Joseph Rykwert, who annotates each spread, defines villa rather broadly here to include not only the Renaissance-era Tuscan hideaways that the word evokes but also some of the most celebrated and innovative retreats of the 20th century.

The volume opens with Roberto Schezen's lovely photographs of the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii (built in first-century AD but not rediscovered until 1930); Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, with both its Greek and Roman theater and library, plus the ruins of its baths; the 13th-century Alhambra, its interior walls so richly carved that they look like woven tapestries; and Palladio's archetypal and much-copied Villa Rotonda in Vicenza. It closes, however, with some latter-day jewels that would have knocked the socks off Louis XV and Thomas Jefferson (whose Petit Trianon at Versailles and Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia, are also included here), such as Adolf Loos' fabulous early modernist villa at Montreux, Switzerland; Le Corbusier's celebrated 1929 Villa Savoye in Poussy, France; and the home that spurred Frank Lloyd Wright's mid-'30s career comeback, the gravity-defying Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania--all of which were so astonishingly ahead of their time that they still look as though they must have been built at least a quarter-century after their actual construction dates. (It's still too early to say the same of the book's last two entries, Gwathmey Siegel's sleek 1979 Francois de Menil House in East Hampton, New York, and Richard Meier's 1998 Neugebauer House in Naples, Florida, which, its high-tech coolness notwithstanding, looks more like one of Meier's acclaimed public projects than a private residence.)

The one thing that unifies these homes of vastly different styles and eras is their sheer grandness and majesty of scale. Many may have been conceived as vacation or country homes, but if you're expecting anything like a twee Swiss chalet or a Nantucket clapboard cottage, forget about it. Passing the book around and debating which one you'd choose to spend the night in, however, makes for a great parlor game. This green-eyed reviewer, who probably won't ever own even a tree house, is still trying to decide. --Timothy Murphy

                    Book Description

The word "villa" likely conjures up images of a grand Renaissance or Baroque country estate. But the villa as a building type continues to flourish in the present day. This gorgeous book-with 153 lush photographs by renowned architectural photographer Roberto Schezen and engaging commentary by architectural historian Joseph Rykwert-traces this romantic dwelling through the centuries and around the world, from ancient Rome to contemporary America.

The 18 villas that are the heart of this book include the ancient Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, Hadrian's Villa near Tivoli, the Italian Renaissance Villa Aldobrandini, the sober and elegant Petit Trianon at Versailles, Syon House in Middlesex, England, and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, as well as modern incarnations by such masters as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Richard Meier. Armchair travelers as well as those interested in architecture and photography will relish this unique tour of truly spectacular sites. Joseph Rykwert is Paul Phillipe Cret Professor of Architecture Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of numerous books on architectural history. He lives in London.

ROBERTO SCHEZEN is an architectural photographer who has published several books. He lives in New York City.

2 out of 5 stars ONLY ancient and modern villas (no in-between).......2001-12-24

Like the previous reviewer said, the villas depicted here seem empty...Probably cause they have no furniture!

I'll bet the authors just took a tour of Italian villas turned into museums to get their shots. Half the villas are in Italy and seem like they are ruins or 'open to the public'. They are more like palaces instead of homes. The modern villas are TOO modern. You know what I mean: box-like or angular stark structures that resemble commercial buildings rather than traditional houses. Fallingwater does have floorplans & is furnished so it was the only villa I liked.

                    3 out of 5 stars Nice.......2001-05-29

This book was of course very nice, but not excellent. The photographic printing seemed a bit dated and it somehow didn't give a real impression of what the villas were really like...a little impersonal. Only Frank Lloyd Wright's house at the end seemed to have enough photos that you got a real feel for it. That said, it is a nice book and I'm sure very interesting for some.

                        Book Description

                        Accessible to readers-useful to specialists
Much as been written on Michelangelo. By 1970, the number of scholarly books and articles exceeded 4,000, approximately a tenth in English. In the past 25 years, the literature has grown exponentially, with a notable increase in English-language publications. The five-volume series reproduces some 100 articles in English, selected from a broad range of books and journals. The collection is both accessible to the general reader and useful to the specialist, offering a representative sample of old and new commentary on the artist and his work.

The career of a geniusArticles are arranged chronologically with separate volumes covering the artist's early life and works, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, commission associated with San Lorenzo, the tomb of Julius II and other Roman projects, and a final volume devoted to drawings, poetry, and miscellaneous studies. Spanning his entire 89-year life, the articles explore Michelangelo's prodigious creativity as an artist, thinker, and poet. The sheer quantity of what has been written on Michelangelo can be intimidating; most student have little sense of how to approach or effectively utilize the vast literature. By presenting a varied introduction to a great artist, this collection is a handy reference tool for a wide array of topics, problems, and literature.
The articles in this volume examine Michelangelo's activities as draftsman and poet, as well as other aspects of his art and thought. This volume includes inter-disciplinary studies and essays from outside art history , as well as a number of important articles that do not neatly fit into a chronological survey of the artists's life.
