2 out of 5 stars The Good, Bad & The Ugly.......2007-06-24

Margaret Truman knows how to craft a novel and although the story of Joe Wilcox and his journalistic integry is put to question and makes for an interesting read, the book is absolutely riddled with cliche. Murder At The Washington Tribune is not an entirely bad read, albeit a bit slow and clunky at times. It has just enough to keep you interested and wondering. However ... ahhh ... as a reporter Joe Wilcox is virtually handed the name of the person who may have killed a young female reporter at the paper about 120 pages in, courtesy of the young women's parents. Wilcox never considers looking into this angle. Flew past him like a Roger Clemens fast ball. Twenty five years of crime reporting and what becomes a major clue goes unreported. Wilcox, the newspaper reporter has, of course, a beautiful daughter in television. Chalk another cliche up. Anyway, the dialog between the two is often pedestrian and dumb. They're constantly sharing sources for stories and get irritated with each other when one of two holds back information for their own employer. As I think about it, there's another cliche at every page. Wilcox' boss is a "tough" Metro News Editor in constant need of the latest scoop. Cliche. Wilcox' wife is a stay-at-homer, all too eager to please and have dinner cooked when he arrives home. Cliche. The main female police officer investigating the murders has a life so cliche -- failed marriage, amazing good looks, high morality -- that she could be a piece of swiss cheese. Cliche. Then, there's the long lost brother whose past creates the books sense of mystery, but he turns out to be medium spicy. You see everything he does or is going to do coming a mile away. The last chapter of the book? CLICHE. Just read for yourself. The one redeeming part of this book is the issues facing newspapers across the country: Integrity. Revenue. The conflict between tabloid journalism and real news journalism. For exploring this angle, I give Ms. Truman thumbs up. For the rest of the book, cut the cliches.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery that keeps you guessing to the very end.......2007-05-03

I found myself pulled into this mystery. I've read a number of the Capital Crimes Series and feel this is one of the best ones that the author's written. I was guessing all the way until the end to figure out who the murderer was. I highly recommend this book. It is well written and the attention to detail was good without being overwhelming.

5 out of 5 stars what snot to like?.......2007-04-30

Margaret Truman is one of my favorite writers. I learn about DC politics and the city while getting a good yarn, and usually can't put them down. Unlike other mystery writers, I do not skip her words -- I do nto "speed read" but savor the whole book!

5 out of 5 stars A Departure from Traditional Truman.......2007-02-23

I found this book to be a bit of a departure from Truman's other novels and I have to say I really enjoyed it and found it to be a breath of fresh air. Not that Truman's other novels aren't spectacular, they really are! This book however is quite special in that the main character turns takes a path that strays away from the straight and narrow. With books where Mac Smith is the main character, we are used to him taking the high road, so this is definitely a departure from that way of thinking!

Joe Wilcox, a respected, but aging reporter finds himself in a moral dilemma when he has the opportunity to gain some fame in the autumn of his career. One thing leads to another and soon he finds himself losing is journalistic integrity in order to show up a young, hot shot reporter. To add further intrigue, someone from his past shows up on the scene that has a lot more to hide than the reader first realizes.

This complicated tale of deception and murder in the Nation's capitol should not be missed!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mystery.......2006-09-16

Murder at the Washington Tribune by Margaret Truman is not the worst book I've read this year (I'll reserve that dubious honor for Patricia Cornwell's Predator). And it's not even really that bad. It's just not that good either.

I have to applaud Ms. Truman for venturing away from her usual Washington series starring attorney Mac Smith and coming up with an entirely new set of characters for this novel. I generally enjoy her mysteries, with the combination of Washington insider intrigue, solid mystery writing, and good characters.

This book, however is not so much a mystery as a journey into the temptation of and subsequent fall from grace of a good man. As such, the mystery, the murder of a young journalist takes second place to the relationship between veteran news reporter Joe Wilcox, his daughter, hotshot television reporter Roberta Wilcox and MPD detective Edith Vargas-Swayze.

Also entering the mix is Joe's brother Michael, newly arrived in Washington after years spent in a mental institution after his killing of a teen-age girl. Truman mixes all these characters together, and tosses in a few other mysteries as well-- the murder of another reporter and the killing of an elderly veteran. Sometimes she loses some of the threads-- I don't believe the murder of the second reporter is ever solved, and the resolution of the murder of the first reporter is no big surprise-- the surprise is that no one tumbled to it sooner.

Ultimately the murders in this book are merely window dressing for the true story, which is the downfall of Joe Wilcox. There's nothing terribly wrong with that, however Ms. Truman could have given her story more oomf if she had devoted as much time and energy toward the mysteries as she did to Joe's story. As it is, the reader is left at the end feeling dissatisfied-- not only are all the questions not answered, but there just doesn't seem to have been any purpose to the whole book.

4 out of 5 stars If a hermit dies in the forest, should anyone care.......2007-03-17

Called to the Hospital because of an unexplained death Lt.Joe Gunther, has a mystery on his hand (but not the one he thinks) as to how this man who lived in a cabin deep in the woods, alone for twenty years, died from a gunshot that had take twenty years to kill him.

As Joe begins to dig into the man's life (literally); he uncovers a skeleton buried in the hermit's garden. The body is also twenty years (placing all these occurances around 1970) in the ground and has a prostetic knee joint. Joe figures if he follows the knee he'll get a name for the body and maybe figure out how it ended up in the rural Vermont vegetable garden. While investigating the cabin Joe also finds hundreds of thousands of dollars and some automatic weapons, also from around 1970.

So Joe goes off to Chicago (where the knee was sold) to solve one mystery and create eight to ten more; which bring him back to Vermont in the end and almost get him and friends killed. It's all handled deftly and doesn't have a slow spot anywhere.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-05

Archer Mayor is a great author, but this is not a great book. The end is rushed and the solution a jumble. What Mayor does amazingly well is put the reader realistically in a locale. His Chicago descriptions are spot-on. A must-read only if you're an ardent Gunther fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Big Improvement.......2005-03-12

I read the first Joe Gunther book and thought it was great. So I read the second and found it OK. I read the third and was very disappointed, I don't think I even finished it. I gave up on Archer Mayor and thought he was a one-hit-wonder.

Recently I read a review of his latest book and it was very favorable, so I thought I would give Mr. Mayor and Joe Gunther another try.

I'm glad I did because Skeleton's Knee is a great mystery. Good plotting and characterization, great writing. Mayor really makes you feel like you are there, especially with his location descriptions.

I'm glad I gave Mayor another try and am anxious to jump into book #5.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2004-11-27

All of Mayor's mysteries are well researched, and convey a strong sense of place. He reaches below the picturesque veneer of contemporary New England to reveal its scandals and crimes, beauty and ugliness. His characters are multidimensional, believable and sympathetic even in their weaknesses. Other reviewers have thumbnailed the plot of this one; it is simply one of the most interesting novels I have ever read.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, no frame.......2003-03-16

I really like Mayor's books, however, after the first three where the plot was built around someone being framed, I was beginning to lose interest. No one is framed in this one, and the action moves right along. It gets a little confusing at the end, but overall , a good read.

        4 out of 5 stars mostly great.......2005-08-08

This book is a great werewolf reference although some of the information is a little off. for instance there are a great many metal tools that have been found in north america. the oldest copper axe here dates to 6600 years old and is of exemplary quality suggestiong that metalurgy began in north america at least 7000 years ago! The Etowah mounds in Georgia and the Cahokia mounds in ohio have both yielded furnaces used to smelt metal, mostly copper but possibly iron ore as well, more research is required. This is a great book but i suggest you go out and do some additional research on your own. I reccomend 'the southeastern indians' by charles hudson. Knights of Spain; Warriors of the Sun by the same author is another great book that details the expedition of Hernando De Soto and would make a great story for a game- with some poiniant pollitical and historical undertones- enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars a little patience helps with the book.......2005-07-10

If you are looking for a straight forward account of the Croatan, the Uktena, and the Wendigo, look elsewhere. The book is beautifully written in a story telling fashion that calls to mind sitting around a fire and listening to you elders talks. Given the setting, the way the book is constructed is perfect. But you have to patience with it because it will take you a while to digest what is inside and figure out how to use it. Yes, you could just set a story before Columbus but you could also use it to add atmosphere and information to any Werewolf story you are running.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Lands Before 1492.......2004-01-13

As both a player and ST for Werewolf: the Apoclaypse, I've always had a bias towards the Pure Ones, so I was quite pleased when this book was released. In addition to finally providing information on the Croatan, it also gives an overview of the Pure Lands in general before the coming of the European Garou. The book opens with fiction about the Three Brothers (Uktena, Croatan and Wendigo), as well as an introduction telling of the theme, mood and setting.

The book then goes on to chronicle the history of the Pure Lands, telling of the Pure One's arrival, the Mound Builder civilization, the arrival of the Europeans and ultimately the fall of the Croatan. It also gives some small histories from both the Uktena and the Wendigo, telling of bane-binding, contacts with the Europeans and so forth. Chapter Two covers the lands and peoples, listing several examples of Croatan Caerns in the Mississippi and along the east coast, Uktena Caerns in the Southwest, California, Southeast and California, and Wendigo Caerns in the far north, Great Plains, Northwest Coast and Northeast. It briefly mentions the Corax, Gurahl, Nuwisha and Bastet, alongside spirits and some differences in settings (like no written languages or metal tools), plus info for some pre-Columbian chronicles. The neatest part though was an examination of kinfolk for all three Tribes. The Croatan claim the Lene Lenape, Iroquois, Mound Builders and so forth, while the Uktena claim the Comanche, Kiowa, Anasazi, Pueblos, Osage, Miwok, Apache, Navajo, Seminole and other southern Nations and the Wendigo claim the Inuit, Algonquians, Iroquois, Tsimshian, Lakota, Cheyenne, Pawnee, Haida, Arapaho and other northern Nations. Theres nothing here you couldn't get out of a good ethnography or history book, but its nice to have if you know next to nothing on Native cultures but still want to add depth to a character.

After this, there is an extensive look at storytelling, giving some basic info for major time frames such as the Great Migration, First Contact, the Wild West and even modern times, plus a look at past lives, multi-generational games and so forth. Information on basic stuff like other Tribes (mainly Get, Stargazers, Fianna and Talons), the Pure Lands gauntlet, systems for fighting and major spiritual themes are all adressed. This stuff I feel is good for almost any historical game. Theres also a look at monsters like cannibal heads, witches, horned water snakes and the little people. The next chapter covers the rules changes, like Willpower for all the Tribes, new and changed Abilities and Backgrounds, Merits and Flaws, Fetishes and Talens, and Gift changes. In addition to some new Rites and new Gifts for the Wendigo and Uktena, theres also a complete list of Gifts for the Croatan. There are also guidelines at the back for creating and running Kinfolk characters, which is really nice to see for a change of pace.

Ultimately this is a wonderful book. I've seen some comments that this book is too Native-centric, but as it is focused on pre-Columbian settings I feel that is quite appropriate. I was also pleased to see the use of Nation in lieu of tribe to refer to Native groups, and the occaisonal use of proper names (Dine instead of Navajo, for example, or Hasinai instead of Caddo). It really struck me that the authors were trying to be respectful of RL Native cultures. My only real gripe was that it stops at the Mexican border, leaving out the Aztecs, Maya and other Native Americans in Mexico and further south. Still, if you want a book that will help with a historical setting (like the Wild West, or even pre-Columbian times), or want more information on the Croatan, this is the book to get.

5 out of 5 stars What Croatan Song Is.......2002-08-19

Croatan song is an expansion to werewolf the apocalypse. This book contains detailed informatin on how to create and play a Croatan AND Kinfolk characters. It also contains a format for how to create new monsters. This book is a great source of information of the fictional croatan's history, as well as the non-fictional people of north america (navajo, hopi, apache, cherokee, gwich'in, and many, many more) Even if you just want new abilities, rites, gifts, fetishes (magical items), totems -including the lost totem of turtle... this book is for you! This book contained much more information than I had expected, a pleasant surprise.

4 out of 5 stars The Croatan have fallen...........2000-07-24

Finally a book devoted to the Croatan! The tales of the brave who sacraficed themselves to the Eater-of-Souls. This book gives detailed, informative descriptions about the tribe, history, and present (if there is one). Basically required for anyone that is truly interested in the STORY of Werewolf, not just the hack-and-slash that so many make it.

Very well written. Adds an great new avenues to both Werewolf history, and the White-Wolf universe in general.

Find out; was their sacrifice worth it?

Recently, I was diagnosed with renal failure. Immediately after the diagnosis I began a search for cook books and other helpful resources on kidney-friendly diets. I read the section of this book that was on kidney disease and kidney health and fell in love with it immediately. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to make a change in their life.

5 out of 5 stars Food is the original and Best Medicine.......2004-10-11

This book is an excellent informative book, on how to use food, diet and herbs to get well. Unfortunately in the United States we seem to be lacking in the food education department. With the simplistic, dated food guide pyramid that many of us base "healthy" eating choices on, we still don't know what to eat, to keep us feeling well, and healthy. For example a "grain is a grain" at the base of the pyramid, our starting point, gives us so little information to keep us healthy. Is eating a piece of chemical ladden, processed fluffy white bread the same as eating a piece of luscious, rich whole grain pure bread? According to our Food Guide pyramid it is.
Dr. Khalsa helps us get back to the basics of nutrition. It was such an interesting book to read. He made it simple for someone like me who doesn't like veggies that much. He gives excellent statistics, and recipes. Later in the book he gives specific nutrient and food information, as well as suggestions for herb use in specific diagnosis related illnesses. He has chapters on gender specific nutrition, and some excellent Resource ideas in the back of the book. It is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Motivation to eat healthy!.......2004-05-26

"Your body has the ability to heal itself if you just give it a chance. Using food as medicine gives [you] the greatest chance of all to heal....What you eat can either prevent cancer and other chronic illnesses or help cause them....My number one recommendation is to eat a rainbow of fresh fruits and vegetables every day." Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D.

FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent.
Dr. Khalsa writes a chapter about each of his seven principles of yoga nutritional therapy to help you restore balance to your body, mind and soul. They are:
1 Detoxify your body. (If fasting isn't for you, you can take two 450 mg aloe vera tablets at night or go on a monodiet.)
2 Go organic. ("The switch to organic food is vital if we are to save our environment.")
3 Limit or eliminate genetically engineered foods. (Examples include: aspartame, canola, corn, cotton, crook-necked yellow squash, dairy products, papaya, potatoes, soybeans, and tomatoes.)
4 Eat clean protein. (Buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, and venison are some non-traditional sources. I personally enjoy the latter very much. Choose chicken and fish--preferably wild salmon or other oily fish. Shark, swordfish and tuna also have potential problems with contamination--mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and arsenic. Also soy protein and definitely beans and legumes are great--they have almost no fat and are rich in fiber and good carbohydrates.)
5 Discover juicing and supplements. (I don't do this one because there is more fiber in the fruit than the juice and that is good if you want to avoid getting type 2 diabetes down the road.)
6 Cook consciously and eat mindfully. (Chew slowly, savor your food, sit down and relax and "remember that everything we eat comes from God, as do our health and healing.")
7 Make the transition to the yoga nutritional therapy diet. ("By following a plant-based diet, you will find that you have improved focus and higher productivity in your daily life.")

My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity."

Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

This is a tremendously helpful book. The author is a physician who's also a believer in the spiritual aspects of health and nutrition. As a result, the book is as practical and grounded in science as you'd expect from an M.D., while providing an enlightened underpinning for what he teaches. Best of all, you can just look up what ails you, or what part of your physiological being could be improved, and find exactly which foods to eat to treat yourself well. Even if you don't buy the spiritual stuff, the nutritional advice is flawless and easy to use. This book goes on the shelf right next to Dr. Andrew Weil. I recommend it that highly.

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-08-25

This is a wonderful book! If you do low carb, and you drink at all you should have this book! There are mostly really low carb drinks in this book and they are wonderful. There are also drinks with zero carbs in them. I just had to be careful as there were so many good recipes to try and at least for myself I can not really drink and lose weight. But once in a while it is nice to have a wonderful cocktail.

        1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed........2004-12-14

I tried half a dozen of the recipes and the drinks just don't taste right. I also had a bad aftertaste on some.

I'd rather drink MUCH less of the real stuff than drink more of this awful stuff.

Persnickety's bizarre statements in his review of his other book, Beyond Atkins, appears to indicate that Persnickety is Markham or possibly a close family member (OUR accomplishments).

Then Persnickety reviews his own book here! And gives it five stars, of course!

4 out of 5 stars A Glimpse of the articles of a previous age.......2001-09-19

Lynn Hunstburger has given all car enthusiasts and collectors a leg up by collecting and indexing many of the ornaments you are likely to find at swap meets, auctions or on eBay. I use it often in identifying U.S. hood ornaments at the San Diego (CA) Automotive Museum. The book would have rated five stars except for some errors and no page numbers. When identifying an ornament for someone I always have to add "Regrettably there are no page numbers so I cannot be more specific in the location in the book other than BUICK or FORD or LINCOLN Section". The errors in my 1994 edition (the NASH [broad winged]Flying Lady misidentified as a 1957 item when it was a 1951 item for one) can be forgiven; anyone who takes the time to do a research project this extensive can be expected to err occasionally. The errors will undoubtedly be corrected in the next edition. Thanks to Mr. Huntsburger for a an excellent piece of work.

This book has 50 quilt block designs in it (all 12 inch blocks) and it provides you with the quantity and sizes of each piece of the block for cutting. It also has colored pictures of the block and then 4 different ways to layout the block to create different designs/patterns (my favorite part). The only negative I have is that you need to do your own calculations/math to determine how much fabric you will need in order to create a larger project. The book also includes a wall hanging, table runner and pillow design. It includes some general instructions on how to lay quits and cut pieces in the back but assumes that you already have the basic quilting skills.

                      Book Description

The aim of this study is to place the inscriptions found on Athenian vases in the context of the early development of writing in Athens from the time of the invention of the alphabet in the eighth century BC to the early fourth, when the local alphabet had been supplanted by the common Ionic script. Other sources include the inscriptions on stone, both public and private, scratched inscriptions on pottery, among them the political ostraca, and some inscriptions on lead tablets; they are, however, insufficient to give a full picture of actual writing practices in a period from which we have no papyri. Although the vase inscriptions are brief, they number in the thousands, and being autographs of the period, they give a more accurate picture of the art of writing and the state of literacy in the Classical period. This book presents a selection of inscriptions, with many illustrations, that will help students of ancient vase painting to properly appreciate the individuality, writing competence, and level of education of the members of the pottery workshops, and epigraphists to get a better feel for the different styles of the well-known stone inscriptions. Professor Immerwahr has been working for many years on a complete collection of the inscriptions on Attic pottery, which he hopes will help contribute to a wide-ranging study of aspects of ancient life.

Another Beautiful Book in the Art of Nature Series by the joint effort of Merrell Holberton, Publisher and the Natural History Museum, London. This book focuses on the Life of William MacGillivray, a artist and ecologist who was one of the first to show wild animals and birds as living creatures inhabiting their own environment, rather than as dead specimens. This book is one of the first fully illustrated books of MacGillivray's art. If you are interested in the life of a friend of Audubon, who was a great help to Audubon in editing his Ornithological Biography and beautiful natural history illustration of not only birds but fish and mammals as well, you need to get this book. This book is not just a picture book but a interesting account of MacGillivray's life and work as a teacher, naturalist and orinithologist. Enjoy!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not particularly insightful.......2006-07-31

Spelling gives a once-over-lightly review of his life and work. I have to admit I never watched his shows, at least not that I could recall - so I only had the book's description to rely on. After a while, it appears to be something of a stream of name-dropping. But then again - Spelling made most of the actors the household names that they and that their characters became, so I guess he's entitled.

Spelling was basically a feel-good guy, at least that's the way he came across in the book. Nothing wrong with that, but because he really won't criticize or make any harsh observations about anyone he encountered (including types like Eisner and Orvitz) - that limits the depth of his observations and insights. Spelling obliquely observes that Hollywood is a tough town, but really doesn't tell us how tough it can be. Rather interestingly, he remarks that when one of his shows was cancelled - he would go home and spend a few days in bed with a bout of depression.

The book is a worthwhile read if you want to get a sense of some of the history of television programming - Spelling produced something like 3,500 hours - by comparison, Dick Wolf's Law & Order, which seems to be everywhere - is only about 600 hours.

I would have liked Spelling to be a bit more philosophical about what's involved in producing serial television, and his insights as to why his programs were such hits. But you won't find such insights in this book. About all he said in that regard is:
                      > television is teamwork
                      > hire the best writers you can and give them credit
                      > look into the actor's eyes when you audition them - that will tell you who's good

Since Spelling recently passed away, no telling if there is an update or additional biography in the works. I would hope so, and one that would give us more insights into the man, his times and his work.

                      Hi,

I found Mr. Spelling's book entertaining, insightful and innovative because he candidly talks about his humble beginnings growing up in a poor neighborhood in Dallas, being taunted and teased mercilessly, and then discusses how hard he worked to get where he is today!

As Candy Spelling, Mr. Spelling's wife and mother of Tori and Randy Spelling, argues in his book, they worked hard and deserve to live in a palatial estate. I couldn't agree more with her commentary. When you work hard, and do the right thing with the right attitude as Mr. Spelling has done, then you deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor, so kudos goes to Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Spelling and their children for working hard and maintaining a strong work ethic.

Anyone who is a fan of Mr. Spelling's work, will thoroughly enjoy this informative, entertaining and down-to-earth memoir.

It's almost as if Mr. Spelling is in the room with you talking to you about his life.

Very enjoyable! I give his autobiography the highest rating, which is 5 stars!

Buy it, read it, and enjoy it because it's truly an excellent book to add to your library!
