Randy Wayne White--try saying that three times, fast--had everybody shouting about a new Travis McGee with 1996's Captiva. But White's marine biologist Doc Ford is a much more complicated character than the late, great John D. MacDonald's muscular bounty hunter. For one thing, Ford has a shadowy political past--which explains why he's reluctant to race down to Havana to bail out his chemically-abusive friend Tomlinson when his boat is impounded under suspicious circumstances. "By most definitions it was a nightmare, but to me it was simply a sleeping revisitation of a thing I had done, a thing that I loathed," says Doc--planting the seeds of a revelation about his past and showing off the kind of writing that makes his new book so compulsively readable.
Book Description
Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford novels have been praised as "witty" (San Diego Union-Tribune), "must-reads" (Chicago Tribune) and "superb." (Denver Post) Now, White's newest thriller takes Doc Ford to Havana, where his friend is being held by the Cuban government. Still haunted by his suspected involvement in a plot against Castro, Ford ventures to Cuba--where he finds himself entangled in a web of murder, revenge, and assassination.
* >From the author of the critically acclaimed novel Captiva (Prime Crime, 5/97)
* Another mystery featuring Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford is on the way
* Will appeal to fans of Carl Hiaasen and John D. Macdonald
* "We'll drop anything we're doing to read a new Randy White novel and be glad we did."

Customer Reviews:
North of Havana is South of White's Best.......2007-05-06
Randy Wayne White is an outstanding writer and his novels are usually quick reading page turners. North of Havana is a little different because it is set in Cuba and the character dynamics are different. Tomlinson seems laregly insane and Dewey Nye (who accompanies Doc to Cuba against his wishes) does not seem to fit into this story very well. For some reason North of Havana bogs down a little. It's not a bad read but didn't pull me in the way Randy's books usually do. That being said, you need to read this one in sequence with the others if you want to fully understand the story of Doc Ford's relationship with Dewey, Pilar, and his son.
One of my all time favorite writers.......2007-02-21
RWW is always excellent! I have read his 1st five books this last year-
normally I get bored with authors and will not read more than 2 a year.
Each story is very different from the previous yet is very much part of the series.
Each character seems authentic and with a voice unique from the others.
Most authors seem to have trouble doing this - their characters talk from the roughly the same voice or perspective.
This story might have been a little slow but RWW writes so well I don't mind. Plenty of suprises big & subtle. As always good characters, fast paced dialogue, action and emotion. Once again I'm dissappointed to be finished. On to book 6!
Another good read.......2007-02-14
Like the rest of the Doc Ford novels, it's well worth the time.
negative reviews?.......2007-01-16
I have been interested in reading the reviews of this book. I read widely, and have read all of RWW's books and I am surprised at some of the negative reviews here. I read "North of Havana" last (of RWW books including nonfiction) and liked it as well as any other. I did not think the book slowed at all and I found it interesting until the end.
The reviews on this page turned me off from reading "North of Havana," but having no other RWW to read, I picked it up. I am glad I did. If you are a fan, don't let negative reviews keep you from enjoying this one too.
A great read, but not his best.......2001-07-16
I'm a big RWW fan and enjoyed this book as well, but as stated by an earlier reviewer, I thought "North of Havana" lost a little steam midway through. It may have been the fact that Tomlinson, whose eccentricities are normally a source of mild consternation for Doc Ford, are the cause of some major problems, both to Ford and to his female companion. That those character flaws lead indirectly to several deaths makes Tomlinson less quirky and more downright irritating.
Otherwise, an action-focused entry in a great series of novels.

Book Description
Vintage U.S.-made cars on the streets of Havana provide a common representation of Cuba. Journalist Richard Schweid, who traveled throughout the island to research the story of motor vehicles in Cuba today and yesterday, gets behind the wheel and behind the stereotype in this colorful chronicle of cars, buses, and trucks. In his captivating, sometimes gritty, voice, Schweid blends previously untapped historical sources with his personal experiences, spinning a car-centered history of life on the island over the past century.
Packard, Studebaker, Edsel, De Soto: cars long extinct in the United States can be seen at work every day on Cuba's streets. Havana and Santiago de Cuba today are home to some 60,000 North American cars, all dating back to at least 1959, the year the Cuban Revolution prevailed. Though hardly a new part has arrived in Cuba since 1960, the cars are still on the road, held together with mechanical ingenuity and willpower.
Visiting car mechanics, tracking down records in dusty archives, and talking with car-crazy Cubans of all types, Schweid juxtaposes historic moments (Fidel Castro riding to the Bay of Pigs in an Oldsmobile) with the quotidian (a weary mother's two-cent bus ride home after a long day) and composes a rich, engaging picture of the Cuban people and their history. The narrative is complemented by fifty-two historic black-and-white photographs and eight color photographs by contemporary Cuban photographer Adalberto Roque.

The Pictures Present History of Cuban Life in the Fifties........2005-12-03
This is a history of Cuba replete with fifty-two old photographs, called 'historic', with emphasis on its dependence on America's automobiles. "Following the Revolution, [when Castro took over], relations between the United States and Cuba went from bad to worse." America was the major exporter of the sugar, with U.S. based oil companies plentiful in Havana, only ninety miles from Key West Florida.
In February, 1960, Cuba made a major mistake by agreeing to sell "five million tons of sugar over a five year period to the Soviet Union." This was during the Cold War. "In March, President Dwight Eisenhower responded...by drastically reducing American purchases of Cuban sugar. In June, when the first shipment of Soviet crude [oil] arrived, Shell, Standard, and Texaco refused to refine it at their Cuban installations. As a result, Castro's Revolutionary government took them over and 'nationalized' them. In 1959, the president of Airtex, a Chicago-based manufacturer of fuel and water pumps, wrote a Christmas letter to the company's Cuban dealers, "We really admire the work that is being done by your maximum leader, Fidel Castro." He was wrong. By that fall, Castro had put severe restrictions on the import and sale of North American cars.
From 1950 to 1958, the number of cars on the island had jumped from 70,000 to 167,000. At the same time, a large majority of Cubans were illiterate and too poor to afford minimal health care. The tourist trade was booming, and "the island had the largest per capita sales of Cadillacs in the world." In Havana, Chevrolets dominated sales. Tourism was off dramaticallly during the first year of the Revolution. One shipment of 1960 Oldsmobiles left Detroit in 1959, and a few 1960 Chevrolets. Che claimed one of the latter, though he is shown driving a Studebaker on the day he married in 1953. Fords were also plentiful in 1956 with Plymouths and Valiants never reaching Cuban shores.
The first car in Cuba arrived in 1902. The last trolley ran in 1952 replaced by buses. "By 1930, some were calling for the city to eliminate trolley service entirely." They used a type of trolley (pictured) with spoked wheels and "to make a trip in a trolley from one end of the capital to the other means to have to submit oneself to a truly distressing torture." The Astro bus station was a center of "community interaction, an urban hub where people come to eat, drink, or shop as well as to catch a bus to some other place to to wait for somebody arriving on one." I guess when the KAT transit center is built here, it will resemble the one they had in 1953. Some of our current buses are as torturous to ride as their old trolleys.
During the Thirties, the Ford V-8 and Lincoln were popular in Cuba and, in the Forties, the Packard for the wealthy. The color photos don't add anything to the historic collection as they show history in the making. Written by a Nashville native (I wonder if he knew Bernie Schweid who I would see occasionally on Nashville local television shows?) who settled in Barcelona, Spain, he compares Cuban revelry to the nightlife in Spain where "everyone likes to go out and meet their friends for a drink in the evenings." I have a 1958 glossy 8x10 of my extremely handsome friend, Carlos Ubach, doing just that in Barcelona.
Other books by Richard Schweid include BARCELONA: AN OLYMPIC SEASON, THE COCKROACH PAPERS and CONFEDERATE CATFISH FISHING IN THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA. He is senior editor of the city magazine, 'Barcelona Metropolitan' and produced an Oscar-nominated film 'Balseros,' about Cuba -- a place which clearly fascinates him, as this book shows.

Book Description
High-stakes wine fraud and murder disguised as a heart attack compel Sunny McCoskey to again toss aside her chef's apron and don the role of sleuth. When the list of suspects includes her new lover, the celebrity chef at a posh Napa Valley eatery, the personal risks of her investigation rise dramatically. With the same eclectic crew of gourmet friends and sassy co-workers who helped her in Sharpshooter, Sunny proves that she has a nose for crime as well as for a good Cabernet Sauvignon.
Customer Reviews:
Food, Wine & Suspense - Doesn't get any better!.......2007-05-15
I picked up Sharpeshooter, the first in Nadia Gordon's Sunny McCoskey series, at a local wine store in San Francisco. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately ordered the other available books in the series and ordered them new rather than used from Amazon (I believe in supporting writers when I enjoy their work) and was not disappointed. If you like food, wine, engaging characters, and intriguing mysteries, read this series! And don't forget the bottle of wine to go with the read!
fun light mystery.......2004-02-28
This is clearly aimed at foodies and wine lovers, but even though I can just barely tell a pinot noir from a cab, I enjoyed it. The mystery plot is a little thin (though intriguing), but the real delight is in the dialogue. Nadia Gordon is one of the few authors who can nail witty, contemporary dialogue without it sounding forced or precious. I did live in Northern California for awhile, and I wallowed in the nostalgia brought on by vivid descriptions of (among other things) winter rains, organic produce, and the ridiculous behavior of yuppie wine snobs.
Excellent Murder Mystery with a Great Wine Flavor.......2003-12-28
Whether you live in the Napa Valley, or just enjoy visiting it, you'll love the setting of this book. Sunny, the main character, is a lovable, but unintentional sleuth intent on solving a murder. If you're a wine fan, you'll love the references to real wines in the book, learn a little, and enjoy the aromas of a great mystery! I've already purchased her other book!
Nadja doesn't miss a beat but I keep missing my stop........2003-10-19
I have been waiting this book ever since I read Nadja's first Napa mystery and burned my skin badly (beach reading). Previous book was a serious page turner and so is this. I commute to Manhattan every day to work and this book is the reason for some very irratated clients who had to wait outside until I came and unlocked the door. I missed my stop twice going to work and once when getting back home. Parsippany doesn't have too many train stops so I ended up walking back home (3 miles, thank you Nadja). I love the book and I love Nadja. Although I hate you little for making my and my clients life difficult for few days but it was worth it. But I can assure you that when the next book comes out I will stay home in bed and under my warm blanket. Would you Nadja care to join me?

The Kingdom of Nowt is a magical and musical story of unusual creatures that have lived under the earth since the beginning of time. They are the Treemungermen, and come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Trunks and bushes grow from the tufts of dirt on top of their heads, and they blow into the hollows of their arms, making the most beautiful sounds. Others tap their fingers against their trunks making sounds of bam dee dee bam bam boom bom bom. Others bellow huge sounds, "Sing ho ho, sing ho ho, ah yee nah sen hah yah ho!" They have come to a young boy, Ben, who was prophesized to save them from perils of the earth's destruction by man's neglect. Ben agrees to save them, but first he must convince his parents that these remarkable beings exist. Ben's journey takes him under the earth to experience the fantastic fentubbles where everything we know in the world originates. Into the sky to fly with eagles and falcons by learning the secret chant that can help any of us to soar among the clouds. And, into the circle of light that binds treemungermen and people together. The story culminates in Ben's remarkable and unexpected transformation, and a seismic shift in his family and the world around him. In the end, the possibility for a new tomorrow for our planet is assured, a place where humans and Treemungermen can live together.

Customer Reviews:
SOOOO good!.......1998-07-01
Wow! I LOVE this cookbook! You know how it is when you come in from work and you're dead tired and ravenous and you just don't have the energy to cook anything? Well, if you can face boiling water, you can make almost any of these dishes in the time it takes the pasta to cook. Everything is super easy, fast, and delicious, and good for you to boot. My only wish is that some of the recipes were "saucier" -- since they are all low fat, they (the ones I have made, at least) tend to be more of the "pasta salad" or "pasta toss" variety than good, hearty sauces. But, much better for you in the long run, and unarguably delicious, every recipe I've tried.
Book Description
Over 3500 items of popular Chinese and Japanese antiques—such as blue-and-white ginger jars, richly carved lacquer boxes, and jade jewelry—receive illustrated, detailed, and up-to-date coverage in this excellent entry in the popular Miller’s Buyer’s Guide series. It’s first divided by type of ware (such as furniture and ceramics) and then subdivided by country for ease of reference. Each section contains practical guidance on collecting, what to be aware of when starting out, how to spot fakes, and ways to avoid making expensive mistakes.

A great sampler........2003-02-04
Encompassing 2000 years of history, and everything from ceramics to furniture to Mao era propaganda, it isn't a comprehensive guide to any one subject. It isn't meant to be; nevertheless it serves as a full intro to the field in one portable volume. Several thousand pieces with prices in Brit pounds (most for museum quality specimens, not the more everyday kind). About 70% b&w, though does include some lovely color sections. Still a bargain.
Too many black and white pictures.......2001-01-05
I bought this book to help me discern chinese porcelain and learn a little more about the oriental collectables. This book has too many black and white photos and falls short of being a necessary refrence guide.

Guide for Safe and Stable Glazes .......2007-09-19
I can't recommend this book enough for the potter looking to better understand glazes and the firing process for cone 6 oxidation ware. It's detailed but unpretentious and will be accessible to the non-chemist potter for which it's written.
Hesselberth and Roy have obviously spent a great deal of time and money learning what makes a glaze stable and safe for functional use. This is not a recipe book, though the recipes included are outstanding; rather the authors wish to better inform and equip the potter in 1) better matching his clay bodies with his glazes, 2) ensuring minimal leaching of toxic materials from his glazes, 3) learning to rely on stable and reliable materials in glaze formulation (so long Gerstley Borate), and 4) teaching the potter ways to test whether a particular glaze is safe and stable.
The authors will be the first to say that what's provided here is not exhaustive but this book goes further than any other glaze book I know of in promoting the use of stable and safe glazes that fit well and look good. If you're like me, the price might discourage you. It's an investment well worth making though, and I haven't regretted it. I've now worked in two studios that have based their entire glaze palate on the recipes and principles provided in this book, and the results are reliable and beautiful.
I really think this is going to set the standard for glaze books and cone 6 glazing for a long time to come.
Finally Help Arrived!!!.......2006-09-06
Being a novice potter in search of answers regarding cone 6 glazes, this book was my 5th glaze book to purchase. I only wish that I had bought it first and I would only own one! I found this book straight forward with great information regarding not only glaze mixing but successful firing. I would recommend it to anyone trying to get started mixing their own glazes. I had tried many glaze recipes from other books and the web, only to be disappointed with the outcome. The recipes in the back of this book work wonderfully. I am thrilled!!
Outstanding balance of theory and application.......2005-10-07
Very useful reference. Assuming you know other aspects of ceramics, this book seems to contain all the info you need to succeed with cone 6 glazes. It's not only for cone 6 though, because much of the info will apply to other glazes as well. Includes a solid explanation of glaze theory, balanced by a wealth of very detailed and practical considerations for getting the best possible results in the real world.
Excellent Cone 6 Glaze Book.......2002-11-08
This book lives up to its title. If you want a book that covers Cone 6 Oxidation Glazes in an understandable manner, I highly recommend this book.
In addition to the technical information the authors actually supply (in Chapter 6) some beautiful glaze recipes that meet their standards for functional use.
Book Description
This greatly expanded and updated edition features more than 300 beautiful color photos of the most innovative work being done in the ceramics field today. Works by leading artists are showcased in sections on utilitarian pottery, non-utilitarian pottery, sculpture, and work in the wall piece format.

Customer Reviews:
Practicing the craft...........2001-07-28
Generally, I collect ceramics, I don't make them anymore. I was never very adept with the potting wheel where my projects too often became lost in space, but I used to make very nice ceramics. In the process of dabbling with molds, slip and glaze I wondered about other aspects of the craft and over the years I have read and studied the subject informally. This wonderful book is a valuable resource whether you are starting out and want to experiment with different clay projects or want to refresh your memory.
Zakin first explains the building blocks--ceramics-making materials (different combinations lead to different outcomes). He discusses types of clays, feldspars, frits, silica, and other modifying compounds. Ever notice when you hold a cup made from Kaolin (frequently called porcelain) filled with a hot fluid you don't burn your hand whereas the cute cup you bought at the local craft show made from a more porous clay does? Zakin provides a great deal of information about the attributes of clay including plasticity, durability, color, maturity absorption, texture, resistance to warping, and intended use. If you're making a mug, a quiche pan, or a vase (or buying one), you may want to consider these aspects.
Zakin provides the reader with much information about ceramic color, glazes, and mold-making (plenty of tips for success). I was fascinated with the sections discussing glaze making and testing, and kiln loading and firing including some nice photos of the raku process. Section 16 includes a succinct history of ceramics that covers various types generated over the ages (nicely illustrated and clearly written).
The appendices of the book continue the in-depth exploration of the process of ceramics making including ways to analyze your results. This is an informative and well illustrated book containing many examples of ceramics made by the author and other artists working in his field.
Definitely one to have........2000-03-26
This book has a wonderful overview of ceramics for the studio potter. It has wealth of useful information for all skill levels and is one of the best reference books that I have in my collection. Top artists in the field are represented with lots of pictures and glaze recipes. Very well written and easy to understand.

Excellent details on one of Paducah's most visited sites.......2000-06-06
This book provides very detailed accounts of the history of Whitehaven. The book starts with the building of the mansion and follows its history through abandonment, restoration and its current use as a rest area. The best part is the wonderful history in pictures. The book includes photos of the mansion and its original occupants, the pitiful condition it was found it, the restoration in progress and the finally the mansion once it was restored to all it's grandeur.

Just Wonderful.......2006-12-21
Oh, what a wonderful, lovely, loving little book by Melissa Miller. I had loved George Burns and Gracie Allen since I was a child, and continued to follow George right up to the end. This was the absolute last book about George Burns left that I hadn't read and was a bit suspicious, no matter how many nice things he'd said about Ms. Miller. She's about 4 years younger than me and initially reminded me of a number of young women I knew in the San Fernando Valley in the 60's, star-struck, shallow and generally very untalented. I had also seen them on television and was outraged anyone would try to replace Gracie. Boy was I wrong! She is a loving, sincere, caring individual with a mind of her own (a very good mind Melissa no matter what you've said), and deeply aware of life and those around her. She was a young woman who loved George Burns as well as Gracie did I believe.
The book also gave me, once again, proof that George Burns and the great, great Jack Benny were the two finest men who ever graced the stage or screen. Being able to read about George's private live with Melissa was the final and best ending to my reading of his life. Melissa, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and God bless you for how well you loved and cared for my hero.

A gift to "God".......1999-01-24
Melissa Miller's account of her life with her "G.B." is right on. Her love for George leaps right off the page. As a friend of George, Miss Miller has the sweetness of the man down pat. Thank you Lisa for an honest account of a fine man and one of our centuries great entertainers. To parphrase George, "Love IT Kid!" So did I.

I was a participant in the Kids Next Door in l968.......1999-01-21
I was a member of the group Lisa mentions, "The Kids Next Door", back in 1968; I think I may even see my teenaged face in the shadows in one photograph taken of she and George Burns at the Palmer House in Chicago. George had us on the floor laughing backstage, night after night, with his anecdotes about his friendship with Jack Benny and his practical jokes...Melissa Miller has contributed a warm, touching and delightful book to the Burns legacy; I recommend it to everyone who loved this legendary comic actor.
