Book Description
A novel of suspense featuring Sherlock Holmes and Irene AdlerOriginally titled Irene's Last WaltzThe ever-irresistible Irene Adler, her dashing barrister husband, Godfrey Norton, and the indomitable Miss Nell Huxleigh have arrived at last as their French cottage-having survived dastardly plots, Russian spies, pistol-wielding criminals, and the occasional cobra. The happy trio seeks nothing but rest and peace-but Irene has always chafed under idle conditions, and Paris, she says, "is pretty and urbane, but hardly a center of excitement." So when Charles Frederick Worth, the Parisian king of couture, invites Irene to become his "mannequin de ville," to wear the fabulous worth creations to stimulate his trade, Irene leaps at the chance. But what was a joyous lark soon turns into a journey that can lead to disgrace, dishonor, and death when Irene, Nell, and Godfrey are drawn into a series of events that will compel Irene to the one place that she daren't go and the one man she must not confront-Prague and the King of Bohemia.

Irene faces off against high fashion, high society, and a very tall legend.......2005-08-21
Originally titled Irene's Last Waltz, Another Scandal in Bohemia is the 4th in a series of historic mysteries based on a character from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story, A Scandal In Bohemia. Carole Nelson Douglas takes this character, Irene Adler, the only woman to catch Holmes' romantic interests, and has her go on to pursue her own career as an investigating detective. With Penelope Huxley, a country parson's daughter, as her Dr. Watson to write down her exploits, Adler has married and lives in Paris.
In this novel Irene returns to Prague to once again help the Bohemian royal family with a vexing problem - the king has not consumated his marriage of 9 months. Also the legendary Golum is once again walking the streets of this ancient city. Along the way she becomes involved with the historic and literary personages of Charles Frederick Worth (the founder of Haute Couture), Sherlock Holmes, and Baron Alphonse de Rothschild (international financier).
Carole Nelson Douglas fills this series with wonderful historic detail - especially about the wardrobes of Irene and Penelope. She also livesn up the narrative by opposing the personalities her two main characters, the flamboyant and independent Irene and the fastidious and proper Penelope.
In this book she looks at the working conditions of young women in Paris and the position of Jews in late 19th century Europe. A wonderful volume in the series.
Excellent piece of Victoriana.......2004-06-29
I am not going to address the "reissue" debate.
And to the person that said that the last two were too gruesome. Well, they dealt with Jack the Ripper...I would expect them to be gruesome.
Who would like this book? Anyone that loves Victoriana, 19th century history, mysteries, Sherlock Holmes (especially us Sherlockians, I have to say), and/or romance novels. Douglas' "Irene Adler series" has all of these elements and more. It is extremely well written. I consider myself to be extraordinarily literate and I still have to look up some of the terms in this series on occasion. I learn, but I am also entertained. I highly recommend this book as well as all of the Irene Adler series.
GOOD BOOK, but Disappointing........2003-01-25
This is a very good IRENE ADLER book. Maybe a bit predictable, but a fun read. However, I was disappointed to learn that it was really only a re-named re-issue of IRENE's LAST WALTZ, not a new book. I haven't cared for the two newest Carole Nelson Douglass Irene books, Chapel Noir and Castle Rouge, much too gruesome. But, I do hope she goes back to writing this type of book.
Reprint of a wonderful book........2003-01-22
This book is actually a reprint of a book under a different title. The original title was Irene's Last Waltz, and it is the 4th in the series. In it, Irene Adler Norton, whom we first met in Arthur Conan Doyle's short story, "A Scandal in Bohemia," returns to Bohemia to discover that an impostor has been put in the place of the real king and that a nocturnal monster is stalking the capital city.
Before reading this one, you may wish to read the previous books in the series in this order: Good Night, Mr. Holmes; Good Morning, Irene; and Irene At Large. (As far as I have been able to determine these have not been reissued under different titles but may be in the future). After this book, there are two more books: Chapel Noir and Castle Rouge.

Book Description
This book contains all you ever wanted to know about Meta-programs, the tools by which we can evaluate how people function! First it provides an in-depth explanation of the Meta-programming technique, and then furnishes fifty-one examples of Meta-programs. It thus provides clear insight into our own behaviour as well as that of other people, challenging us to understand how people operate and how to change our behaviour accordingly in order to communicate with them successfully. An essential addition to any NLP library.
Customer Reviews:
While not perfect..........2006-09-25
...In a previous review in 2004, it's abundantly evident that "Egads" has no understanding of NLP... or is just hopelessly biased against NLP. Why do I say that? Because instead of reviewing the book, he uses the review opportunity to criticize NLP as a field. This book is CLEARLY not about VALIDATING NLP; it's about USING NLP (metaprograms, specifically). The book presupposes that the reader already has some understanding of NLP concepts. To validate the field of NLP would be redundant at this point. Critics of NLP who point out the dearth of unbiased, controlled experiments to validate NLP are ignoring the fact that unbiased, controlled experiments to validate ANY mind-related intervention--psychological, pharmacological, or otherwise, is sadly lacking. Let me repeat: the point of NLP books is not to validate NLP, but rather to help people improve their competence with NLP. And here's something else to consider for those who still want to argue that NLP is bunk: by virtue of being part of a controlled experiment, you change the essence of the intervention so that it becomes (in part) a spectator event. In the case of human intervention, how does one design a "controlled experiment" to overcome the effect of the experimenter on the experiment? This problem is inherent in any psychological test. If someone knows he is being tested, it affects his experience of the test. And those who administer the tests are affected by having their focus split between testing and applying an intervention. The classic example is the tester who tries to disprove eye accessing cues (EAC). While asking the questions that are supposed to elicit the EAC, the tester is so busy reading his test question that he misses the eye movement. BOOM. Test invalid. Yet, because what he does observe is not congruent, he assumes it is EAC that is invalid, rather than his experiment. D'OH! Finally, the reviewer concludes at the end of his review: "not all that deep." And I agree: HIS review is not all that deep. To review an NLP book, one must consider what the goal of THAT book is and rate it based on that goal. The goal of the book was not to prove NLP. In THIS book, the goal is to help readers understand metaprograms. Anyone who knows what a metaprogram is will be able to judge for himself or herself---and as with all of Hall and Bodenhamer's books, while the gleaning is a bit laborious, the knowledge to be gathered is wide and deep. Still, it should be pointed out that (ironically) H & B need help with their writing.
Egad... like reading a field manual for army truck repairs.......2004-01-24
Information, information everywhere and yet the boards did shrink... information everywhere and not a drop to drink.
As far as NLP literature goes, and that isn't saying much as NLP *qua* a socio-scientific discipline has never gotten much farther than a self sustaining cottage industry with tedious mediocrities and their tediously mediocre books which say the same boring things over and over again, redundantly, forever, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, ad eyerolleum, this is definitely one of the better catalogs of NLP distinctions of thought processing styles....or as they say with typical pomposity, Meta-Programs!.... as if the term "Meta" confers some special status to otherwise banal groupings of stylistic dichotomies...
A crucial, rather rude, and potentially enlightening question is...envelope please...where is the evidence that these assertions are true ? What controlled experiments were done to
validate this work ? At which universities ?
Regrettably, none appear to be cited or referenced. This material is presented as settled fact when it is conjecture... is this how people really think ? Do they KNOW what is going on in anyone's mind at a given moment ? Doubtful... And ,then, how closely do these distinctions conform to the actualities of mental functioning ? We should take the author's word for it ?
OK... how did he test these models ? What was his methodology for determining these categories of thought. Can we rely on his questionable theory of how different cultures represent time ? How does HE know how cultures influence the representation of time ? And on, and on, and on....
Not all that deep.
One of the best yet!.......2003-06-19
This has to be the most useful and comprehensive portrait of character and personality ever written. Hall paints many aspects of character and personality in a well-formatted and easy-to-read/easy-to-use manner. Despite such a complex topic as humanity, this book shows you the ways in which individuals are really different from each other, and how we are not so different after-all.
Hall takes you from the lofty thoughts of thinking out your identity down to the nitty-gritty of emotions, thoughts, awareness and feelings. If you're looking for a complete guide to interpersonal or social skills, and better yet self-knowledge and development, this is the book for you.
The typical 'typology' approach (Keirsey-Bates, Enneagram, etc.) doesn't do justice to individuals who don't 'fit' into any one distinct category. Hall bypasses this mistake in grouping by giving us the ways in which people can differ from each other, how to think like them, and how to communicate with them! With this book you can look at yourself and others as unique individuals while building understanding and cooperation.
I've read many of Hall's books and favor this over all the rest.
Very Interesting look at Meta Programs.......2000-04-17
I`m not sure if the ideas contained in this book occur elsewhere but they are well presented here. Not an easy book but very impressive. It will take some time to incorparate all the information contained within into your daily relationships so beware. Otherwise a super book.

BEST BREADMAKER RECIPE BOOK.......2007-03-11
THIS IS THE 2ND BOOK THAT I HAVE PURCHASED, THE RECIPES ARE PERFECT AND I'VE USED SEVERAL OF THESE RECIPES, CAN'T GO WRONG IF YOU'RE A FIRST TIMER OR EVEN AN OLD TIMER. GOOD COOKING.
bread machine magic.......2007-02-23
I bought a Cuisinart convection bread machine for about 110.00, accompanied by a fairly extensive recipe booklet. It was a toss up as to whether the recipes would work or not. I researched on line and found out from customer reviews (bless their hearts) that the Cuisinart recipe book is off in its measurements. I was dubious, but searched for another book. Bread Magic was on Amazon, available used for a few dollars. Worth it's weight in good bread--every recipe has not only worked, but made really exceptional bread of a taste and quality that one just can't buy in the grocery store. I probably have a more recent edition of the book than some reviewers here. The marmelade oatmeal bread is my favorite so far. Just make sure the book was published within the past 5 years or so. It was a relief to find it because I was beginning to think my expenditure on the bread machine was a mispent; now I feel it is worth every penny.
The best bread cookbook ever and.......2006-01-05
the best cookbook. I love this cookbook! I've used it more times than any other cookbook I own. My family and I love fresh baked bread and this is the way to get it! I didn't realize that they've come out with new books that go along with this one, but I will be sure to buy them! I have a Wel-bilt machine and the recipes correlate extremely well. AWESOME BOOK!
Very helpful!.......2004-11-27
I was a first time bread machine user and this was one of the first books I used. It was very helpful with easy explanations and practical recipes, using ingredients that we were apt to have on hand. It is the first bread recipe book that I turn to now.
My Favorite!.......2003-04-20
I have used a bread machine for years and have accumulated upwards of 12 bread books, this being one of my top two favorites. As someone else said, it is getting pretty ragged from use. The measurements used, work perfectly with my Hitachi machine. I love it!

Vintage Flying Helmets.......2007-04-05
This is the definitive work on aviation headgear before the jet age. This is a must publication for historians, collectors and modelers who demand accuracy in their work.
Extremely well researched and accurate in every detail........1998-05-09
I am an avid collector of World War One and Two aviation items, and this extremely well researched and beautifully put-together volume is one to have for collectors, modelers, enthusiasts, historians, museums, or just for those wishing to identify grandpa's old stuff in the attic!
The information entered in the volume has been meticulously researched and well laid out with both period photographs of the gear in wear, and modern day close-ups of gear from both the author's collection and from the collections of fellow collectors.
I also encourage those interested to pick up the next two volumes that are coming out concerning "Luftwaffe vs. RAF", flight equipment of the opposing air forces during the second world war.
Both thumbs up from me!

Sea Ranch...Diary of an Idea
ASIN: 0965114481 |
Book Description
This large-size volume documents 20 of William Turnbull's most well-known structures, ranging in scope from the Sea Ranch Condominium I (1965), designed by Turnbull in collaboration with Charles Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, and Richard Whitaker (WLTW), to his own house in Napa Valley, CA (1991).
Turnbull buildings' create a dialog with the landscape that resonates in the structural character of his works and reflects the integral nature of his design approach. In contrast to the hegemony of materials and style of Modernism's international style, Turnbull flourished with an altogether different emphasis of site specificity. Donlyn Lyndon writes that Turnbull's "buildings are conceived in their site. As they grew in his mind and emerged from his hand they were stroked and disciplined by the acts of construction, tutored in the accommodation of human action, and set against insistent measures of excellence." Featured essays by Mitchell Schwarzer, Associate Professor of Architecture, UC Berkeley; Mary Griffin, principal of Turnbull Griffin Haesloop; and William Stout. Dimension: 10 x 13 inches, Over 300 Duotone Images and Illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Doing Good Architecture.......2001-09-29
This is a big, beautiful book portraying the works of an architect who strived not to design monuments with a signature style, but instead create wonderful places that fit their landscape. The book chronicles twenty of Turnbull's projects beginning with the Sea Ranch Condominium (with MLTW) and ending with Turnbull and his wife's own weekend retreat, Teviot Springs Vineyard. All but one of the projects (Sea Ranch Athletic Club)are residential, which reflects the nature of Turnbull's career. The book contains essays by Mary Griffen (Turnbull's wife and business partner), William Stout, Mitchell Schwarzer, and Donlyn Lyndon. Turnbull's buildings contain innate beauty, sensitivity to site, and the ability to bring common, conventional construction to a high art. Morley Baer's black and white photography is powerful and captures the wonderful subtleties in Turnbull's sometines simple and conventional structures that are truly "GOOD" architecture.

Book Description
Contains intimate details of Cruise's first and second marriage never before revealed.
Customer Reviews:
Flaws and Applause.......2005-12-08
Wensley Clarkson's portrait of Tom Cruise seems balanced and well researched. We see Cruise as a competent actor whose private life is sometimes detrimental to his reputation. The incident cited by Clarkson on page 84 confirms this impression:
'Cruise was in New York's Hard Rock Cafe with his buddy Russell Crowe. To entertain the crowd, the two actors had been reciting some lines from 'Hamlet'. It was an impromptu performance and warmly received. They should have left it at that, but the booze quickly took control. Cruise, wearing a T-shirt that read 'Instant Idiot... Just Add Beer', did his hilarious Donald Duck walk along the bar while Crowe threw cell phones at him. The two finally fell into a stupefied heap and were hogtied by Crowe's friend, the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, and dragged out to a waiting limo. Some money changed hands and the incident was hushed up.'
Wensley Clarkson's biography is a revelation.
Good book about a handsome jerk.......2005-07-23
Tom Cruise is handsome and misguided.
As an actor he is ok.
But his support for Scientology shows what a buffoon he is.
Pretty good book.......2005-06-12
Book reveals some of the details of Cruise's Scientology involvement (probably unnecessary now, in the light of his recent flood of interviews) but is even more enlightening when the author tells how the cult tried to shut him up while he researched Cruise's membership in Scientology.
Book Description
Tom Cruise is the most successful film star of his generation. From his brilliant debut in Risky Business through Oscar-nominated roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, to the massive Mission Impossible series, Cruise's hit rate is phenomenal. But lately it's his personal life that's been making headlines, including his infamous interview on the "Oprah Winfrey Show," his whirlwind romance with Katie Holmes, and his outspoken views on Scientology. Now, Ian Johnstone tells the real story of the making of Tom Cruise—both the man and his work.

I have to tell you, things are good. I am . . . I am . . . Whooo! . . . I am very good. I just returned from a walk and . . . ha! Things. Are. Good. I've got a bowl of hard kibble with some soft stuff mixed in. My name's on the bowl! I am passionate about this lamb-and-rice recipe. What's been going on? haha! I'm so in love with this b****! hahaha! I can't . . . I'm so . . . I can't restrain myself. hahahahahaha! We met at the park. She was in the run for little dogs . . . 'cause she's, well . . . ha! She's petite. And I was over in the big run and . . . I am in love. I can't be cool. This b**** is . . . I have total respect for her. Yesterday on my five o'clock, I just sniffed her a** for a while and then we frolicked. I can't even describe it . . . we chased squirrels . . . frisked, you know . . . she likes to be physical, too . . . and to fetch and . . . We're like anyone. We tore into this shoe and just had a ball. I'll see her tomorrow on my 8 a.m. I am happy. I am . . . hahahahahaha! She is a wonderful, wonderful animal. I can't . . . words don't . . . owooooo! I can't sit or stay, man. I need to get up on my hind legs and holler, you know! I gotta pee on something. And I don't care what the other animals do or what their masters say. Listen, there are always gonna be pit bulls. There are always gonna be Dobermans. And cynical little pugs. And you know what? I've never cared what others think about me. I've always been this way. I'm living my life. And I am fortunate. And I am excited. I am fortunate and excited.
Do you know the history of crate training? 'Cause I do. Don't talk about things you don't understand. Like saying dogs are wild. Dogs are wild-that is glib. Dogs are . . . I've done the research; there are crates that they put us in to quote unquote train us. They throw rattlesnakes at us. Electric-shock tags! I'm not making this up. This is . . . it's history. Crate training just masks the problem. These dogs, they become zombies. You can totally handle disobedience naturally by saying "No!" and "Bad dog!" It works. Look at the facts. Shock tags?! I am disgusted.
hahaha! I fetch! Boy, I love to fetch. I am totally fired up when I fetch. And nap. I've got a great dog bed with leopard spots where I can power-nap, man. I've got awesome chew toys, too. I'm passionate about this rubber T-bone with peanut butter hidden in it. Here's the point: do you know there are strays on the street eating out of the Dumpsters behind Chinese restaurants? I'm not making that up. I care about those mutts. But they don't know what the options are. They don't know that you can live in an apartment and get fed by a human. These hounds, man-when it thunders, they think the world is ending. Because they haven't done the research. Do you know the statistics? A hundred and fifty dogs are being fixed every ten minutes. A hundred and fifty. Every ten minutes. I can't . . . that's just wrong. And I speak out about it.
There's this yellow Lab, Clover, who I see in the dog run. And this is a totally great purebred. He's a . . . ha! He's . . . he's a great guy. I've got enormous respect for him. But he's overweight. You know why? 'Cause they're feeding him scraps from the table. And he can't fetch or chase without getting winded. That is sad. I care about him, and I care about the apricot poodle with the plaid socks on his feet, and I care about the basenji with the drooling issues. I want to hear good news. I like to see a Rottweiler get a bath or a shepherd savor a Milk-Bone. That makes me happy.
What these beggars don't understand is that if you hover around the dinner table long enough and you're observant food will come. Food's gonna come naturally, man. They're gonna drop stuff and you can-hahahahaha! But, seriously, begging is a huge issue among our species. I did the research. And I speak out. I speak out about misinformation. Do you know people think that one dog year is seven human years? That is false. Total fabrication. It's approximate. Flea and tick collars? There are vitamins for that. And your master can totally put that capsule in a slab of butter and you'll never know you ate it.
owooowowowooo!!! This b****, she's kind, she's caring, she's a wonderful, wonderful dog. It's like . . . wow. And I don't want to compare, but I've never felt this way before. We might have a litter. One thing at a time. It's joy, man. That's what it is. Look at my tail! I'm panting 24/7. hahahaha! I purr, even. Like a cat, man. The cat looks at me and he's, like, "What did they put in your kibble?" haha! I don't care. I've never cared what that cat thinks. But I care about him even though he's a cynic. I care about the glib parakeet and those jerks the gerbils, but I'm not sure those are the same gerbils as before. hahaha! Those gerbils! We have fun. I bark, they run on the wheel. What's that? The leash jingling! Is it eight already? Walk?! owooohahahahahaharuffruffruffha!!! I love living my life!

Customer Reviews:
A more adult level recent biography is needed........2003-05-18
I knew this was a kids' book, but it seemed to be the most interesting and recent biography of Tom Cruise, based on the reviews that I looked at on this website. I am a very big Tom Cruise fan, so I decided to take the risk.
I was a bit shocked to find out that the customer review on this website that claimed that Cruise had made punnish errors in reading movie titles seems to have been entirely fabricated. I don't understand why something like that isn't removed from the site.
The book was ok. I learned some things about Cruise's career. There were some nice photos. Still, it wasn't an adult book. I would have liked something more meaty and in depth. I guess that would be hard to write, since he's not a person who likes to reveal intimate details about himself. I suppose eventually some person in his entourage will start talking and we'll actually find out something about him. We'll just have to be patient.
This would be a good book to give to a child who is dyslexic and feeling discouraged about learning to read, though.
A good starting point..........2002-05-21
This cute little book gives insight into Tom's career from the beginning through his role in "Jerry Maguire". It covers his early interest in acting, as well as his struggle with dyslexia (which seems to be mentioned on almost every page). I gained a deeper respect for Cruise after reading about his trials dealing with the handicap and his non-compromising dedication to perfecting his job as actor, producer, director. This is definitely an enjoyable book!
Pig-ignorance no bar to fame and fortune.......2002-02-12
The public only see the glamour - but Phelan Powell shows the significant obstacles Tom Cruise has overcome in order to live his life of pampered opulence. In Cruise's case dyslexia was the obstacle - it nearly cost him the part of the barman in "Cocktail" (he thought it was a film about cockatiels and told his agent he "didn't do parrots") and he bought his own wildebeeste to research the part of Lt Maverick Mitchell in "Top Gnu".

Does unauthorised mean "just make it up"?.......2000-04-05
I can't believe it! If you're going to write a book about someone you think they'd check the facts! Frank Sanello must not know much about Tom Cruise - first of all he had him down as the lead in Endless Love (including a photo of 'not Tom Cruise' with Brooke Shields. There were also pics of Tom with Rebecca DeMornay in All the right moves (wasn't that Risky Business? ). This is just the start and I could go on - but I won't it's rubbish....he made up stuff to fill the pages....a non-fiction book is meant to be just that! I'm sure I could find plenty of other Tom Cruise books that will actually give me the facts...

A great little collectible.......2002-02-27
In it's 80 pages, this tiny little book (three inches tall) gives a great introduction to the work of the celebrity we know as Tom Cruise. This is terrific for trivia buffs! There are great photos, a summary of his career so far, and a few quotesby Tom and those close to him. It's a nice treasure for the Hollywood junkie.
A GOOD READ.......2001-05-29
I read the book and thought that it was very well done, it had a very captivating plot, and it went into great description about one of hollywoods best actors, Tom Crusie, how is roll playing Lestat De Lioncourt, affected his life, to his greatest, most horrifying moments in his life, truly unique, with a profound endearment, that with-holds the human heart in an iron cage. I loved it, and thought it over, and said, it was one of the most interesting reads, I had ever read, and now, Tom Cruise is one of my favorite actors, with his characters, and his motives, and his thoughts, about his children, and his wife. In this book, not only will you find, Tom, but all of us, locked together in hatred, with a sadness, of hope, and pain, with this pain, we can see, not only the truth, but the harsh fiction with-in our lives. Tom Crusie is a very deep person, spiritualy, with his thoughts, and his great chararcter, you will fall in love with his movies, and his whole look upon life, death, and truth, to the great subjects of fiction, in this world. The plot, already holds a keene fasination to most people, and with its stories about Tom, makes it more captivating, I really loved, and I thought it was sad too. How his life affected alot of people, not only mine, but others as well, I loved the book, as much I do Tom Cruise.
