This book is terrible! As a fairly new reader of the cozy/hobby mysteries I was exceedingly disappointed with this one. I have read at least a dozen others by various authors which all were enjoyable.
The main character is presented as an obnoxious know-it-all who apparently feels she is the only one in the world with any intelligence. Other characters are presented as unflattering and insulting ethnic caricatures including the one non-human -- the dog! There is no logical pace or progression to actually solving a mystery... just wild theories by Carolyn whenever some connection to the victim is discovered.
I'm glad I didn't begin my reading of cozy mysteries with this one or I would have sworn off the genre for good and missed some truly excellent writing by Laura Childs, Elaine Viets, Monica Ferris and Janet Evanovich.

This story was fantastic. The recipes sound out of this world and the story is very entertaining and full of fun facts. I loved our herione in the last book but in this book she has a pregnant helper to figure out who killed the woman with whom she had dinner and shopping with the previous day.
Again, however I had issues with the relationship with the husband. It didn't stop me from reading this book though, and I guess it is more like real life where they don't always get along and play kissy face.
This book however I guessed the murderer almost right away, but that is ok. Still a great read!! Bravo!

This series has become one of my favorites; you always know you are looking forward to a few hours of complete enjoyment. The latest addition is no exception.
Carolyn Blue is a forty-something faculty wife, embarking on a second career as a food writer. Her husband's work as a chemist gives her ample opportunity to travel to exotic locations and sample local fare. Needless to say, her passion for food is a running theme throughout the series, and often is the source for much comedy. For readers who cook, recipes are inserted throughout as parts of the columns that Carolyn writes. She is also an amatuer historian, and interesting bits of local (and not so local) history are scattered through the pages.
The latest installment has Carolyn in Sorrento, Italy. Compared to previous books, this one was somewhat light in place desciption; previous books would have delighted not just fans of the genre but fans of the area in which the books have been set. As an Italophile, I didn't find this book as charming as the previous ones, in which I've enjoyed mini-vacations to New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Barcellona, France and El Paso. Perhaps it was my increased familiarity with the place. In any event, this cost half a star in my rating-- Ms. Fairbanks has set very high standards in her previous books indeed, and this one just didn't quite live up to them.
Ms. Fairbanks alternates the narrative between Carolyn and her accomplice for this book, Bianca, a heavily pregnant Italian woman whose husband is attending the same conference as Carolyn's. In less deft hands, this could be distracting, but Ms. Fairbanks handles is beautifully and it adds greatly to the humor of the book. Bianca's pregnancy, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, is a great source of comedy and is well-utilized.
As in her previous books, the cast of characters is entertaining, from the Englishwoman obsessed with botany, to the french poodle obsessed with Carolyn, to the hotel management obsessed with rules that all the guests ignore. Carolyn's husband Jason plays less of a role in this book than in most of the previous books, and I miss the easy, funny, and supportive relationship they had previously. Carolyn does, too, although not as much as in the last book. When Jason is stranded in Paris, Carolyn's first day in Sorrento is spent quite enjoyably with Paolina, whom Carolyn then finds dead in the hotel swimming pool the next morning. Carolyn seems to be the only one truly interested in finding out the truth behind her death, and sets about investigating, enlisting Bianca's aid.
Ultimately, this book will charm you, and have you looking for the other books in the series. Do yourself a favor and just pick them all up at once!
funny amateur sleuth .......2005-07-05
Food Columnist Carolyn Blue is in Sorrento Italy to enjoy the city while her husband Jason attends a scientific conference sponsored by Ruggiero Ricci, owner of Ricci Chemicals. Carolyn arrives ahead of Jason who is stranded in Paris due to an air-traffic controller's strike and spends the day and evening with Paolina Marchetti who is at loose ends because her lover stood her up.
The next morning Carolyn is having coffee by the pool when she sees a body floating in the water. It is Paolina who turns out to be Ruggiero's lover. Carolyn thinks she was murdered but the police don't want to investigate because of the mob connections of her boss and his wife's noble lineage. Carolyn teams up with Bianca, the wife of a scientist also attending the conference, to prove it was murder and to try to find the killer.
MOZZARELLA MOST MURDEROUS is one of the funniest amateur sleuth mysteries to come along in years. Bianca, who is nine months pregnant, and looks it, finds herself, due to her delicate condition, in strange situations that border on slapstick comedy. While two different sets of police offices waste the taxpayers' money, Carolyn and Bianca are busy finding suspects with possible motives. Nancy Fairbanks has written the best mystery of her career.

A Different Approach to MS.......2007-05-13
Diana Neutze has written what almost seems like several pages from her journal. Her writing is very personal and also very literary, which is natural considering her background as a college tutor and teacher. The inclusion of her poetry and quotes from other writers I found a little over my head--and I am an occasional reader of classics, although not poetry--but maybe that is due to my own version of the MonSter?
I enjoyed reading about life in New Zealand, and also about the treatment and attitudes about MS in the "early days" of the 1960's and 70's before the advances we ms-ers are "enjoying" now.
Diana's ideas about her own treatment I found thought-provoking, i.e. am I on too much medication or the wrong ones? Her dedication to exercise and yoga is yet another reminder to get out of my comfortable recliner and move!
I am glad I added this to my library and intend to recommend it to other ms-ers.

This was a straightforward accounting of an amazingly difficult journey undertaken with amazing grace. It underscores how much being "happy" is a choice and not relevant to our external circumstances at all.

This book inspired me to the core, truly encapsulating the power of the the human spirit and the choice of survival. It is beautifully and lucidly written, with huge amounts of humor and wit and courage. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those that have had life changing obstacles to grasp and the choice to move graciously forward. As a person with a physical disability that pales in comparison to MS, I can say that taking things for granted seems to be universal until an equalizer of this magnitude appears. Theres a certain point you reach in this story that bears testament to the fact she doesnt pull any punches in deaths shadow... bottom line: support the author, buy the book, pay extra for faster shipping, read it in an evening, and encourage everyone you care about to do the same. Its worth the investment.

What I love about this book is that it truly offers something for everyone, from novices looking to host their first Thanksgiving to more accomplished cooks who want to try new twists on the classics. Ms. Morgan provides plenty of clear-headed advice to guide you, from choosing the right equipment and do-ahead tips to planning your menu.
The book is organized well, and includes everything from a section on the history of Thanksgiving to a chapter on creating great meals with leftovers. There is even a chapter on vegetarian entrees. This is not to say that the star attraction (turkey)is neglected. Ms. Morgan gives us recipes for brined, barbecued, deep-fried, and roasted birds, among others; plus advice on what to look for when buying a turkey. As an added bonus, the book also includes a handful of table-decorating ideas, with "recipes" for making table centerpieces and other autumn home decor accents.
Among my favorite recipes: the fragrant walnut rolls, which my family devoured; and the cranberry chutney, with its beautiful jewel color and spice-infused flavor. You will never go back to cranberry sauce after this!
New Inspiration for Thanksgiving meal planning.......2004-12-01
I was so inspired by the authors presentation that I made my own dinner napkins (I've never sown) purchased a new table cloth, made napkin holders and candle center pieces. Set the table the night before and took a picture! The turkey brining write up conviced me that it was the way to go - along with the roasting receipes and stuffing. My dinner guest have decided that this will be the only way future turkeys can be served! The meal was soooooo good - Thanks Diane Morgan for your work on this project - it's a success in my book.
Gourmet Thanksgiving Recipes.......2003-11-29
I used the "Search Inside this Book" feature of Amazon to try out some of the recipes in this book for this year's Thanksgiving. I made the carrot pudding souffle, the jalapeno cheddar cornbread stuffing, and the sweet potato wedges. All came out wonderfully! The cornbread stuffing was the biggest hit. I strongly recommend this book.

I purchased this book only recently and tried it out over the past holiday. I can now heartily endorse it. Ms. Morgan has put together a collection of easy to follow recipes that will liven up your Thanksgiving table. Many look like your standard fare, but have been jazzed up with new preparation techniques. A perfect example is the Chiffonade of Brussel Sprouts. I have to have brussel sprouts on my table every year, but was so bored with them. I followed her technique for shredding them, then sauteeing - they came out like a warm slaw, perfectly cooked and offset with the hazelnuts - I had no leftovers at all! I will be making that dish again, for sure.
I primarily purchased the book for her section on vegetarian entrees and again, she did not let me down. The stuffed acorn squash was, as she stated, fantastic, and my vegetarian guest was thrilled.
I do have one complaint/suggestion: I wish that each recipe had said how far in advance each recipe could be prepared ahead. I believe in a book about holiday cooking, where most people begin to cook several days in advance, knowing how far in advance each thing could be prepared would have made this book ideal for anyone preparing the holiday feast. I have enough experience to figure it out myself, but not everyone does.
I believe this book is an excellent buy, however. If you like Holiday cooking and are looking to change things up a bit, you should buy this book. You will enjoy it, and so will your guest.

Morgan offers up a wide variety of mouthwatering dishes that are easy to make and (usually) don't require an extra trip to the store or a quest for some obscure ingredient. There are main course recipes for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, and she even includes ideas for leftovers. Best of all is the brined turkey, which is life-changing. I'll never eat turkey any other way.

I wanted to know more about the value of fishing lures and more about the specifics regarding their history, makers, models, and materials. This book hit the mark on almost all points. It is an excellent adjunct to a fishing lure library and if a person has such a collection it would be remiss not to include this. That said, this is not the penultimate fishing lure book. That is another.... and you should be sure to find it.

The great variety of fishing lures with the differences in their bright markings and sizes can be disarming to even experienced collectors. With his 20 years experience as a collector, Lewis makes sense of this area of collecting by classifying the lures by their makers, and with introductory essays on "Dating Techniques" and the "Modern Era." The chapters with the classifications are more than simple listings of numerous lures. Besides sharp color photos with annotations, these chapters also include information on the manufacture of the respective lures and details of them to look for. Advertising and promotional literature and displays are shown as aids in identifying different lures and understanding their design and features. A serious collector or dealer of lures could not find a better guide than this for what it does cover of this incredibly diverse and constantly changing field.

Do not be put off by the name of the book or the word "wreath".
How about words like "brooches", "garlands", "motifs", "rings"?
How about "frisbee"?
I recommend this book for its simplicity. You need to learn to fold one unit from a selected model. Fold the same unit several times and join it to form a ring. Because of this repetition, it serve as good practice for a beginner or for children. it is good to get a group of children together and each one fold the same unit and with together form a beautiful ring. This is real team work!
Repeated folding also encourages mastery and this mastery is useful when you learn to fold other origami models later.
There are many beautiful rings and with the right colour, it is very attractive and eye catching. This goes well as part of a greeting card.
I had enjoyed folding many of the models within and used it as part of my origami display.

After this book, one feels Sian Phillips deserves an award just for surviving her marriage to O'Toole (the man and an era of carouser-talent-industry it symbolized), with her sanity, talent, and will to trudge on INTACT. You have to admire a woman who sees O'Toole's bullying (among more redeeming acts) as valuable training for OTHER bullies in her professional life.
Between a tone of "I had The Life" and purge sessions by an anorexic depressive, Phillips opts for the Sensible Survivor tradition of celeb bios. The underlying theme is a willing but unhappy submissive to a talented but Jekyll-Hyde husband, and the tough sell of female, married professional in 60s England.
On a larger scale, this outlines the operations of a modest but robust creative force (Keep Films run by Jules Buck/O'Toole families) in 60s-70s, during the waning studio system and before the advent of 80s high-concept blockbuster swamped out the maverick, artsy tirades of the 70s.

Having seen her perform in Pal Joey in London and again in My Old Lady in Hollywood, I was quite interested to read her story. I was not disappointed. The book tells HER story, not the story of O'Toole and others. For the lady who wanted gossip, I suggest getting the scandal sheets at your local super market when you check out.
The book covers not only her stage career and O'Toole relationship, but her thoughts and feelings about both and many other aspects over about a 40 year period.It is an intimate commentary on what she was going through from day, week, month and year onward.
For the comment that O'Toole wrote a good book... that is rubbish. He can't hold a candle to her as a writer. His "style" is awful. A poor man's James Joyce! And Joyce was bad enough himself.

If you want to hear droning stories about British theatre life, then this is your baby. However, if you're hoping for some juicy revelations about Peter O'Toole, look someplace else. What a crushing disappointment this is. Sian was married to O'Toole for 20 years and during the height of his world-wide fame. She was with him during his breakthrough role as Lawrence of Arabia, in Becket, Goodbye Mr. Chips, and all his other stellar 60's roles. I expected gobs of gossip on Taylor and Burton, but Sian merely relates Peter's drinking binges with Burton and the fact Kate Hepburn referred to Liz and Richard as "fat pigs."
And what about O'Toole's drinking? As one of the most famous drunk actors of all time, in the league of Lee Marvin, Burton, Oliver Reed and Richard Harris, I expected some fireworks in this area. Forget it. Sian clinically describes Peter's addictions, his out of control lifestyle and racing cars, but it's all told in a desperately dry manner. All very disappointing.

I loved this book! First of all because I think that Sian Phillips is an amazing actress who is terribly underappreciated -at least in this country. (I can't help but wonder what she would have achieved had Peter O'Toole allowed her to work more often.) I think her book is an honest, insightful picture of what her life was like - being married to a superstar, trying to juggle a career and a family, with less than no support from a husband who felt her only place was in the home - or at his beck and call - all pretty standard views at that time. Certainly the frustration she felt comes through very clearly, as does the turmoil she felt when she had to make the choice whether to stay in the marriage and go on the way they had been, or leave and find her own life. Obviously the success she has had (in Britain, anyway) since the marriage ended would indicate she made the right choice. But the stories of their life and adventures make for a fascinating and enjoyable read.
As for the reviewer who complained that there was nothing about her childhood in Wales - the reason is simple. This is the second part of her autobiography. Her life in Wales and her early days in London - up to the time she met Peter O'Toole - was beautifully told in the first book - "Private Faces" which was never released in this country, but which you can get through amazon.co.uk. It too is a fascinating story, since I doubt very many of us can even imagine what it would be like growing up in a very rural part of Wales.
I can't recommend this book highly enough - if only for more people to discover this amazinglybeautiful and talented woman.
Delicious Stories of an Adventurous Life.......2003-12-09
I loved reading this book. Sian Phillips took me places I wouldn't dream of venturing. One ride with O'Toole as driver and I would have said, "Enough already!" But she seems to adore a daring life -- and it takes her places. I was thrilled to go along, sinking ever deeper into my armchair. I'm reading to others at a Christmas party for booklovers the sequence that starts with her arrival in Cambodia in a "little girl" Mary Quant outfit that enrages her husband through the Hong Kong roaming in a neighborhood too dangerous for the police to enter.
