Shark Dialogues.......2007-09-01
This is a fascinating, expertly written saga of the lives of a family down through the generations - each more interesting and compelling than the last. The setting is Hawaii at the turn of the century and carries the reader thru the overthrow of the Monarchy to Pearl Harbor and beyond.I lived in Hawaii 15 years but learned so much more about Hawaii and it's people from this book. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end.!!! If you thought you knew Hawaii - think again!. Get this book!
Favorite book of 2006.......2007-07-31
I loved this book. I did have to keep an index card at the back to keep track of the daughters, children, spouses and how they all connected. I do live in HI. now and have a new understanding of the history, culture and was educated about coffee growing, lepar witch hunt, and so much more.
Depressing, negative, and gross.......2007-04-18
I had to write because I am amazed that no one yet has commented on how graphic and gruesome this book is! Four women in my book club couldn't finish this book because they were so grossed out by the gratuitous scenes in it. Yes, you will learn a bit about the loss of Hawaiian culture and what the Hawaiians have suffered at the hand of foreigners, but every minute detail of this book is negative and depressing. There is definitely a lot of doom and gloom in this book. Horrible, graphic things continue to happen to all of the characters throughout the story. Yet, the characters do not seem to overcome their shortcomings and misfortunes; instead, they succumb to them. I thought this was going to be a book about strong triumphant women, but instead felt it was a depressing lesson in Hawaiian history that missed an opportunity to garner the respect it should have.
Hawaii revisited.......2007-01-10
Fiction, yes, but enough facts about Hawaii to make you feel as if you are reading a historical novel. The interaction between the cousins shows how people are different, yet are often bound together by family ties. The love story among their grandparents is one of a deep love that is molded by the circumstances. A great read!
An Amazing Story.......2006-10-30
This book opened my eyes to so many intriguing aspects of Hawaiian culture, and I now find myself living on the island of Kauai! Last year I had the opportunity to hear the author speak about Shark Dialogs and her newest, House of Many Gods, at a Kauai bookstore. What a fascinating and elegant woman! She confessed that House of Many Gods was delayed by the events of 9/11; although I enjoyed it too, Dialogs remains my favorite.

In the Bathroom.......2001-12-06
Our bathroom has a bookrack, and this book is my everyday helper when I get stumped with a place or person, I can find it there.
Sometime when reading a "Cat Who..." mystery, I quickly turn to the front of the book, for the map, but have to remember it is in The Companion BOOK. I can't fault this book in any way. I always am on the lookout for any new books, about or by Lilian Jackson Braun, this one is a treasure, NOW to get the earlier edition!!
A good reference for keeping track of the characters.......2001-06-11
I bought this as a gift for my wife, who is a big fan of the "Cat Who" books. (I like them too, so she lets me borrow her book now and then). Like all such reference books, the purpose of this one is to help you keep track of all the various characters and places from previous stories that might be mentioned in passing during sequels, etc. It doesn't give you a whole lot of new info, but it does help organize what you already know about the world of Qwilleran and his two amazing Siamese. Of course, if you haven't read all the episodes yet, then the synopses could be real spoilers for these whodunits. In that case, the solution is very simple: refrain from reading the summaries until you've read the original book(s) first! (Duh. I can't believe some reviewers actually complained about this feature. What use would such a reference work be if it didn't explain the plots?) The one complaint I have is that the map of Moose County is a bit primitive and not drawn to scale. Maybe there will be an upgrade in the next edition???
Fun!.......2001-05-19
I really enjoyed this book. My mother and I are huge fans of The Cat Who books and just cannot wait to read each one! I have quite a collection of the books and am constantly working on adding to it. This book is really interesting and I poured over many of the chapters. I found the chapter on the author very interesting and enjoyed getting to know her a bit. Qwill, Koko and Yum Yum feel like old friends to me. I just laugh and laugh over the antics of the cats and always share those parts with my husband who is a fellow cat lover. The concise information found in this book was fascinating and I learned things that I had not picked up from reading the books. If you are a big fan of The Cat Who series... I know you will enjoy this book! It is fun!
A Cat Who Review.......2001-03-24
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of the CatWho Books several times but I still failed the quiz in the back until I read the book. She covers all the people and places that Qwill and his cats knew. It reminded me of a lot of people and places in her books that I had forgotten until I read through this book. Now I am going back to reread all the books again. This book is better for people that have read most of the books as some of the items do give away the plot which may disappoint some people that have yet to read that particular mystery.
NOT BAD.......2000-03-29
I enjoyed the list of names and places and all the neat things that the cats did but I was disapointed about on thing. I hadnot read all of the books when I got this one so I unfortunatly found out things in this that I didn't want to know. Like so and so killed his brother. Well I had not yet read that book so the mystery was ruined. Other that that I though the book was fine.

Anticlimactic Antagonists.......2006-02-23
3.5 stars I reluctantly round down to 3.
There are a handful of good stories here, and none really bad. Most though are firmly average or predictable and one or two below average.
Yes, we do see villains triumph. The problem is, in my mind, very few of the villains are actually shown or hinted at doing awful things. When they are, in some cases, it is presented as being comedic. Or in other cases, it is villain vs. villain. Is one really a villain if he battles another villain? Well maybe but it isn't very satisfying. And though technically being victorious seems contrary to the spirit of the title.
Getting close to the villains also, unpreventably ,creates a form of sympathy for them, rendering them from villain to mere antagonist. This also dilutes the power and shock of having a villain triumph. When we like or sympathize with them, well, that's not very villainous. I do give the authors the fact that it would be hard to present the viewpoint of a character and have the character remain unlikeable.
The other problem is that they weren't generally likeable either making the reader feel ambivalent about their triumphs. Though some decent craft went into most of these stories they remain average but entertaining ways to while a few moments away. The difficulty of the concept may have prevented them from becoming more.
Worthwhile to read, but it isn't greatness.
An Ace Anthology that Lives Up to Its Title.......2004-05-16
Unlike so many Ace anthologies, this one actually lives up to its title. Villains of all sorts triumph here, from familiar fiends such as Moriarty or the Evil Queen from fairy-tale legends to previously unheard of crooks, criminals, and cranks. Not every story is a rousing success. Rosemary Edghill's "The Mould of Form" is an extremely dull account of the beginning of Captain Hook's career, for example. But many are quite good, including Tanya Huff's "All Things Being Relative" (starring the aforementioned Evil Queen), Kristine Kathryn Rusch's "Doubting Thomas" (which will prevent you from ever seeing Santa the same way again), and Pauline Dungate's "Nina" (reminiscent of a dark Bend It Like Beckham). Particularly powerful is Tim Waggoner's
"Horror Show" featuring a washed-up horror movie actor coming literally face to face with his career.
This is the first Ace paperback anthology in a long, long while I intend to actually keep for future reading. It is well worth the time of any and all fantasy and horror fans.
14 tales from Professor Moriarty to Lucifer.......2003-03-21
Bischoff, David: "The Whiteviper Scrolls" occurs later in Whiteviper's unsavoury career than its counterpart in _Apprentice Fantastic_, and like it is narrated by him to a downtrodden peon in his old age.
Braunbeck, Gary A. & Snyder, Lucy A.: "Souls to Take" Dr. Louis Cohen never wanted to end pregnancies by anything other than a normal delivery, but rather than leave patients to alternatives that seem even worse, he keeps performing abortions, despite his own qualms. But when the "LifeGuards" ambush him on his way back from a house call, the doc's rescuer may be worse than the fate she saved him from.
Crowther, Peter: Set in a comic-book world of "Heroes and Villains", the tone is something like the realism of _Watchmen_, but from the viewpoint of the super-villains. The Comedian in particular is struggling with his conscience, as he prepares for a deathbed visit to his mother, their first meeting in many years. But even sidekicks are well drawn - one, for instance, lost his father at 12 when a run-of-the-mill superhero/supervillain struggle destroyed a few city buildings, and the apologetic superhero's out-of-court settlement wouldn't bring his father back.
Davis, R.: "King of Thorns" is the title awarded to the best of the temple's Thorns - their master assassin trainees - each year. The story follows the Thorns' final competitive exam with one another, and is recommended for _Thief: The Dark Project_ players. :)
Dungate, Pauline E.: "Nina" has a mysterious hold on people - her classmates fear her, she rarely does her homework, and the real story of her father's suicide is uncanny. The narrator's family has arranged a marriage between them, and now that he's asked around about her, he's finally got sense enough to be scared. The story begins with his reference to the marriage, jumps back to his enquiries, then works forward to the wedding day.
Edghill, Rosemary: "The Mould of Form" James Cruikshank, the narrator, will be better known by another name to readers. After Cromwell's victory, his Royalist father's death left James and his mother to their cousins' unkind charity, but James' memories of the abuses of Eton are the most bitter.
Gorman, Ed: The narrator escaped the trap set by the FBI with the help of a woman who betrayed him, and became "A New Man" - with the help of plastic surgery. But by chance, his betrayer (who no longer recognizes him) lives in the small Midwestern town he's passing through - but she's married to a cop.
Huff, Tanya: "All Things Being Relative" Cornelius Dickcissel, far from being a heroic adventurer, is an author; receiving the queen's summons, he drew up his will (the traditional response, when summoned by *this* queen). But she has read his story of a would-be dragonslayer that considered the dragon's point of view, and wants him to write *her* story - although she has his editor killed for the clunky title of Cornelius' last book. See how many fractured fairy tales you recognize herein. :) She's even read the evil overlord list.
Patton, Fiona: "Death Mage" is a Cerchicava story, but rather than following ex-carver Coll, this recounts the story of a full-fledged Death Mage hunting down one who has betrayed the necromancers' Trade.
Rusch, Kristine Kathryn: "Doubting Thomas", at the age of six, witnessed something that, far from breaking his belief in Santa Claus, gave him an unusual take on what he considers the world's biggest conspiracy, to which he later brought his skills as an investigative reporter. Cool. :)
Sherman, Josepha: "The Usurper Memos" are a series of email-style carrier-pigeon-delivered memos between Regis I and various bureaucrats of Tavara, including cryptic unofficial communications with the Hunter of Heads. Villain or not, I applaud Regis' final maneuver. :)
Tremayne, Peter: The author of the Sister Fidelma mysteries has turned to Sherlock Holmes in "The Specter of Tullyfane Abbey", the tale of "James Phillimore, who stepped back into his house and was never more seen in this world", one of Watson's famous untold stories.
Waggoner, Tim: "Horror Show" begins with the climactic scene of a story in progress - a late-night movie, the most famous of the seven in which Simon Karkull played the monster Shrike. These days, he's an alcoholic; the producer of the next Shrike film won't even send him a script. But the producer's mysterious murder that same night, a continent away, marks a turning point in Simon's life.
West, Michelle: "To Speak with Angels" For his last walk, the old saint has chosen to seek an audience with he who was once the greatest of the Host, though he must enter Hell to do so. Very fine story. I also recommend Neil Gaiman's treatment of Lucifer in the Sandman series.
Evil gets its day.......2002-05-01
The premise behind this book is what caught my eye - evil defeats good. I wasn't disappointed. I was surprised by the number of different approaches the authors took. (I was expecting a lot of re-told fairy tales...)
A look at what makes bad guys bad.......2001-10-19
In much of contemporary fantasy, the bad guys seem to have no real motive other than "I'm BAD, bwahahaha!" These stories look at some familiar stories and situations from the point of view of the bad guys, and tell us something about why they do what they do. Tanya Huff's Dark Queen's take on quite a few traditional fairy tales is well worth a look, and Fiona Patton's necromancers come back, along with the slightly-twisted magical "Italy" they live in. We get to see the early years of a very famous villain, and, in the context of a four-color comic world, learn with a person obviously based on one of the most famous comic villains about why evil must be evil, and why evil must be.

Banishing night terrors ands nightmares.......2007-02-20
An exelent book on a subject hard to find any decent info
This book helped change my life........2005-07-02
I had suffered from terrible night terrors for decades before finding the answers I needed in this book. I fit the personality characteristics listed and I found the explanations for these characteristics comforting. The relationship section was also quite relevant to my life. But the most valuable part of the book for me was the section on solutions. I had to apply almost all of the important information listed in this chapter (including the information on effective drugs) to my life. This was by no means a ten minute fix. It took a little time, energy and effort but it worked.
Not helpful to alleviate night terrors.......2004-06-18
If you are looking for a book to help you alleviate night terrors, this is probably not the book to read. The book claims to be a breakthrough program, but it offers very little guidance for alleviating them. The main author, who is a sufferer of night terrors, but not a doctor, goes to great lengths to support his claim that all adult night terrors must be caused by past trauma. It is imperative, he says, that a sufferer recognize that trauma (primarily child abuse) occured and to move on. If the reader doesn't buy into this assertion, then the rest of the book is really not helpful. I was hoping for more on how to alleviate night terrors, but this book came up short, in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:
A splendid book!.......2005-04-21
Pickford's Starting to Collect Antique Silver is splendidly innlustrated, clearly and entertainly, not to say gracefuly, written (with just a touch of irony in a few spots!), well laid-out, and very useful and informative.
Pickford includes short chapters on the history of silver and its production, the history of hallmarks, a discusion of how silveware is made, and one of the most useful and well-presented tables of date and place marks I have seen. There are generous color and B&W plates illustrating different kinds of silverware and the evolution of each type. Pickford gives valuable hints as to how to begin collecting (and what is collectable) as well as very useful information about the care and cleaning of old silver.
The book does not include a list of silversmiths and their marks, for which the interested reader must go elsewhere, but these are perhaps beyond the intended scope of the book. Make no mistake, this is a splendid achievement and a very valuable book, and no one with an interest in the subject should hesitate to buy it.
Highly recommended.
Best Information You Will Probably Never Use.......2001-12-13
This book has the same faults as similiar books on furniture,
china, etc, in that it assumes you are a new collector of
moderate means, say, $250,000. Most of the material is 18th century or earlier, and it should have gone to the end of the 19th, if the title of the book means anything. The people who write these books are used to dealing with museums, well-heeled collectors and high-profile dealers, people with whom I rarely come into contact in my modest collecting experiences. I do not question the knowledge imparted by Mr. Pickford, merely the usefulness of it. "Only rarely will a rococo salver of asymmetric shape be found". Thank you, Ian, I will keep that in mind.
The BEST Book for New Collectors of Silver!.......2000-08-25
Ian Pickford is my kind of writer! He approaches the stuffiest of subjects with a down-to-earth style that fascinates his reader with neat silver facts beginning on Page 1! For example, did you know that pure silver is self-sterilizing (bacteria cannot live on its surface) or that silver is so malleable that one Troy Ounce can be made into a wire 40 miles long? The book also contains a clear and concise explanation of hallmarking systems and how silver is made as well as good examples of the types of items a new collector is likely to encounter. Unlike some other books on the subject, his explanations are not limited to a specific piece but cover things to look for within a category, such as candlesticks, coffee pots, or cigarette boxes, to name just a few. Other chapters cover the subjects of silver plate, fakes & forgeries, and how to care for fine silver. This is my favorite book on facts about silver (not just the antique variety) and I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

Customer Reviews:
Completely Outdated!!!.......2006-12-15
I plan to attend F.I.T or Parson's soon.
This book is completely outmoded and does NOT reflect the current figural sketch-like freehand drawing in fashion design.
The book was produced in 1996 and seems even outdated for that year... big shoulders, models are much too literal, etc.
Great Transaction!.......2005-09-17
the book was in good condition and shipped quickly! thanks for a great experiance!
Definitely worth reading!.......2002-01-13
I thought that this book had alot of really helpful ideas and tips.Personally, this book has improved my skills from "not so good" to unique and lifelike! My regards go out to Sharon Lee Tate and Mona Shafer Edwards...Excellent Job on writing an outstanding book!
bad drawing book.......2001-05-29
This book is poorly put together. It looked as if it had been copied and it was even double copied on some pages. It also had no cover or colored pages. Figures are small proportions, not up to date with fashion figures. It was a bunch of copied pages
Content = 5 stars Quality of book itself = 2 stars.......2000-06-11
Yes, this book is very helpful with developing design skills. The only thing I was unhappy with when I recieved it in the mail was that on the preview of it on this website Amazon.com it looks as though it would be in color...only when it came it looked like it was xeroxed (and a bad job at that) it was obviously printed in color to begin with but has since been printed in black, gray & white. For instance, it goes to describe a color scale but the "color" scale is gray & black. It also has a section about highlights & skin color yet alas, it is gray & black...Very helpful but at the same time very disappointing...
Book Description
“An excellent compilation of sewing techniques and the tricks of the trade of the fashion industry.”—Library Journal. “A great find.”—Whole Earth Catalog. “Recommended for both beginning and intermediate-level sewers.”—1400 Best How-To Books, Bowker.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!!.......2005-10-31
I wonder why such a great book is given bad reviews.
This book is a book of comparisons of all sewing methods possible for a single technique. It shows you the normal way and also how the professionals do without criticizing 'one is better than the other'. Which technique works for me might not work for somebody else. It is a matter of personal preference and way of sewing and also, the skill level.
If you are looking for a step by step beginner book, then go for New Complete Guide to Sewing by Reader's Digest. It is excellent and very comprehensive. But if you are looking for the different methods to do a collar or zippers or any other technique, to figure out what works for you, then THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!
Should be called comprehensive guide to quality sewing methods.......2005-10-16
I think the title of this book was not well chosen, but the information within definitely was. I am an experienced old school dressmaker, and have read many sewing books. This book goes far beyond most others in giving a wealth of information on creating a quality sewn product. The emphasis is on garment sewing, but the methods in the book can be applied to other kinds of sewing as well. The author divides the book into sections on different aspects of sewing, such as seam finishes, buttonholes, linings, etc. and then includes many different options for accomplishing a specific sewing task. Each is briefly and (for the most part) clearly explained. The book doesn't have a lot of eye appeal, as it is not on glossy paper and has no photographs. However, the simple line drawings do the job, and the text is concise and to the point. Readers who are looking for a guide to sewing with a serger will find little information here, but those who want to learn how to use a regular machine to its greatest potential have come to the right place.
The thing I like best about this book is that the author doesn't lay down rigid rules. Sewing is an art, not a science, so there is plenty of scope for independent thinking. The book shows that there is always more than one way of accomplishing a task, and gives the pros and cons of each method. Readers can try them out and decide which approach makes the most sense in their own situation. The book will give anyone who sews, or who would like to learn, the information they need to customize their sewing for a quality result.
The Complete Book Of Sewing Short Cuts by Claire Schaeffer.......2005-09-01
I bought this book in hardcover at a Bargain rate just because I have been so plesed with purchases of her other more recently published books. I found it to be very informative. Methods are not always a very quick technique, but all are very good and sometimes a good technique is the quickest way to a desirable outcome. I taught Sewing in Home Economics classes for a number of years and this would have been a very good book to have had available for students of all levels. I would reccomend it as well as her other great books.
Misleading title, but a good book nonetheless.......2004-08-24
You can tell that this was one of Ms. Schaeffer's early efforts; it doesn't have the writing panache of her recent books, and it is not lavishly photographed (the illustrations are all black-and-white drawings reminiscent of pattern guidesheet pictures). It is also not a book of "sewing shortcuts", if I had to guess I'd wager that her publisher or someone else railroaded her into naming it that. There's a word or two about how pullover dresses are easier to make than those with zippers or buttons (duh), and the some good, quick cutting advice but shortcuts it is not. The back jacket information is also heartily misleading on that score. What the book IS, though, is a good, basic-to-advanced, every-technique-listed guide to sewing methods. Want to know what kind of seam finish you need for a particular fabric or effect? She'll tell you. Some facing ideas? Ways to duplicate the appearence of designer or ready-to-wear finishes? Fastening methods? In there too. This book is MUCH more thorough (and much more clipped and concise in style) than either her "Couture Sewing" or "High Fashion Sewing Secrets". I got my copy used, for a complete bargain, especially considering how useful it is. I'd rather have a library of material within one book on my sewing shelf than many pretty books I don't use. Sure, the book is more than 20 years old, but basic machine techniques and hand sewing don't change (especially for those of us who can't afford fancy machines).
I've given it four stars, since the title and the content have little relation to one another. I'd give it five stars for just the content, though. I took the book out of the public library before I bought it, so I knew what I was getting into. Had I purchased it on the title alone, I might have been disappointed.
Not such a good book.......2004-04-29
I guess back in 1981 this book was a good reference, but sewing has changed. This book addresses none of this new stuff. First, there are fancy new notions now that make sewing faster and easier. Second, sergers are now in the home market. And lastly, color photos (although they existed then) are now in MOST good sewing books and readily available. This book is outdated and I am sorry I bought it. (Thank goodness used for only a few bucks. You get what you pay for.)
The author's techniques are not shortcuts, but are the standard in sewing techniques. Nothing new here. The book is filled with illustrations, although most sewing techniques described do not have an accompanying drawing.
Get a better book (or books) like the Easy Guide sewing series instead.

A bible for tailoring and sewing.......2004-12-08
I have been a student of Adele Margolis and have used the "Complete Book of Tailoring" with every garment That I have made. It is a fabulous reference for even the most proficient sewer and designer of fashion for technique. She discusses the do's and don't's in the use of fabrics, styles, and methods in the construction of a garment from inside out, whether it be short cuts or intricate methods. This book is a wonderful text for novice tailoring but with some background in sewing. A must for the serious sewer. I miss her classes but use her books constantly: they are falling apart! Minda G. How fitting!.......2004-09-01
Written in both English and Spanish for ALL Selena fans, this book gives a look into the phenomenal but all-too-brief career of Texas' Golden Girl. Selena lives on through her music, and as a role model for Latina women. We miss you, Selena, rest in peace
Informing as well as Interesting........2000-11-09
I listened to this audiotape while driving home from college, and it was very interesting. I already knew some things about Selena from watching the movie Selena, which was based on her life, as well as listening to some of her CD's. However, this audiobook gave me a lot more information about her life and death. The plot was well-written and well-read, it moved along very quickely and excitingly. Also, the other side of the tape is the same thing but in Spanish, which gave me a chance to practice my Spanish listening skills. :) I recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes Selena's music and/or is interested in her life, career, and death.
One of the bast Selena books I've Read!.......1998-08-21
I would highly recommend this book to any Selena fan. It had lots of information and it answered almost everything I wanted to know about Selena. I wish it had more photos though.
