File "M" for Murder
Librarian and former New Yorker Catherine Penny has already sleuthed out the truth behind a deadly house fire since settling in the tiny English town of Far Wychwood. But nowhere is too far for painful memories to find her when her ex-husband, who left her single in her sixties, arrives with his new lady love to attend a family affair. Catherine can't avoid him at the awards ceremony honoring their son-in-law, Peter, who is a shoo-in for a prestigious appointment at Oxford's Mercy College. But the shock of Peter not being chosen is matched only by who is: pompous, womanizing scholar Edgar Stone. And when Stone is found murdered, Peter's guilt seems hardly academic....
Patricia Harwin, who introduced a "charming, compassionate" (The New Mystery Reader) heroine in Arson and Old Lace, shows once again why an American woman in an English town can unearth a whole lot of trouble.

A British cozy..........2007-03-27
Catherine is a woman who has moved from New York City to a small English village near Oxford where her daughter, son-in-law and grandchild live, in order to get away from her ex husband who has left her for another woman. Her son-in- law, Peter, is slated to win an award and receive a prestigious appointment at Oxford. Everyone is shocked when the position goes to another professor, Edgar Stone, who is not as qualified as Peter, nor as well liked. When Sloan is found dead, Peter is the most likely suspect, since Sloan made a phone call to the police telling them Peter was threatening him with a knife.
In her heart, Catherine knows Peter is innocent and she is determined to prove it. Catherine and her daugher have a shaky relationship, so the daughter turns to her father for help and he hires a solicitor for Peter. Her ex-husband being in the picture adds more stress for Catherine, although she tries to be civil and concentrate on Peter's problem.
This mystery does have a few weaknesses. There are too many digressions, and it takes a while to get into the plot. On the other hand, the descriptions of Oxford and the surrounding area, the nice chapter headings with quotes from English literature, and the appeal of Catherine's character as an independent woman who has made a new life for herself later in life, makes it well worth reading.
Great mystery set in England.......2005-10-10
Catherine Penny, a former New York librarian, now lives in a tiny English town of Far Wychwood. She has to deal with painful memories when her ex-husband and his new lady love show up to attend an awards ceremony honoring their son-in-law Peter. He is supposed to be a shoo-in for a prestigious appointment at Oxford's Mercy College. They are shocked when he is not chosen. The man that is chosen, Edgar Stone, is a womanizer and is not well liked.
Stone is found dead, and Peter is accused. Catherine does everything she can to prove he's innocent. Unfortunately the police have a call from Stone saying that Peter is there threatening him with a knife right before he's found dead.
Her daughter and ex-husband have hired a solicitor, but he doesn't seem to be much help. Her relationship with her daughter is tenuous at best, and these circumstances really wear on it. Plus Catherine and her ex-husband run into each other more than Catherine would want. This adds a lot of tension in the family.
I am not a big fan of mysteries set in England. I think one of the reasons I like this series is that it is an American who has moved to England. So often she will explain the idiosyncrasies I would otherwise not understand.
Catherine is an enjoyable character. I like seeing England through her eyes. I enjoy the English countryside. Her relationship with her family is very difficult and always adds to the story.
I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it and the first book in the series.
I loved her first book but was disappointed with this one.......2005-07-13
It almost pains me to only give the book three stars -- maybe 3 1/2 would be closer to the truth. I found this book slow -- too many digressions. I also think too much time was spent on our detective character Catherine Penny fighting with her ex-husband and his girlfriend. The Catherine portrayed in all her rage wasn't much fun to be around, even for readers, and although I understand the fury of a woman scorned, I found myself thinking that her manners were appalling.
THe plot involves the murder of a man who has just been made a department head at Oxford University (England, of course). Catherine, an American living in a cottage near Oxford following a divorce, is at the dinner where the announcement is made, because it had been anticipated that her son-in-law would get the position. He is the chief (only?) suspect, but she is convinced of his innocence and goes about trying to identify the real killer. She believes it is one of the people associated in some way with the department. Underneath all of the digressions is a well-plotted and interesting book, and it is likely to inspire the reader with a desire to go live in an English village, preferably near Oxford.
The story took a long time to unfold -- you're a third through the book, it seems, before there's a murder, and there are quite a few characters to keep track of, not to mention keeping track of relationships (who is married to who, etc.) If you want to hear all about Oxford and its University, this is definitely the book for you, but if you want a more tightly plotted book, the digressions will be irritating. On the other hand, the digressions involving English literature were far more interesting to me -- there's a lot of Shakespearean issues being discussed among the Oxford faculty, not to mention lots of talk about the other people writing in his time. I just think this book desperately needed some editing to tighten it up.
Very Enjoyable.......2005-06-19
I looked forward to reading this second book in Far Wychwood Mystery series. I wasn't disappointed. I must admit however,
I thought some of the pretentious dialogue between the characters in this book was a bit much and quite frankly tiresome (a little editing would have helped) However, the storyline itself was delightful. So happy Catherine decides to stay on in England and not fall back into the arms of her ex-husband. She is far more interesting on her own.
an excellent read.......2005-06-14
It should have been an occasion for great celebration for Catherine Penny: her gentle, scholarly son-in-law, Peter, is about to be named head of faculty of non-Shakespearean Elizabethan Drama department at Oxford's Mercy College. Except that her faithless ex-husband, Quin, who broke her heart when he left her for his younger secretary, has decided to attend the ceremony with that woman! Catherine is not sure if she can be in the same country with Quin without bursting a blood vessel, but she's agreed to try for her daughter's (Emily) and for Peter's sakes. But on the night that the announcement of headship is to be made, Edgar Stone -- a pompous sarcastic and detestable character, known for his emotional cruelty towards his wife, his womanising ways and his great dislike for Peter -- is named head instead of Peter, much to everyone's dismay. And when hours later, Stone is found murdered in his house with Peter caught looming over the dead body. The police automatically assume that Peter had murdered Stone out of professional jealousy and anger; especially since they had received an emergency 'phone call from Stone claiming that Peter was at his door threatening him with a knife, just before he was found dead. Peter's solicitor wants Peter to plead temporary insanity; but Catherine fears that such a move would spell the end of Peter's career even if he gets off. And so determined to help Peter and Emily, Catherine decides to do some investigating of her own in order to unmask the read murderer. After all a great many people hated the detestable Edgar Stone! Now if only she can keep her attention focused on the investigation at hand, instead of her anger at Quin...
I, also thought that Slaying is Such Sweet Sorrow" was a much better mystery novel than "Arson and Old Lace." And isn't that how it should be? The second novel surpassing the first? Not that "Arson and Old Lace" was a shabby book. To the contrary: it was a fantastic read. It's just that I thought that Patricia Harwin had got the proportions interspersing her heroine's private life with the mystery at hand, much better in this installment. Catherine Penny's inner turmoil at having to come face to face with the faithless Quin and his middle aged floozy, and her confused emotions where Quin was concerned, was nicely juxtaposed with the mystery subplot of who murdered the unlikable Stone and framed Peter, perfectly, without one subplot hijacking the other. Both subplots were vital to this story and I was in awe with the competency with which the author handled them. Add this to the wonderfully vivid and affectionate manner in which she brought Oxford University with its deer park and spires to life; the skillful manner in which she fleshed out her characters (both primary and secondary); and the masterful manner in which she kept things quietly suspenseful and constantly humming, and you have a book worth touting as an excellent read. I'm really looking forward to the next Far Wychwood mystery.

Disappointed.......2007-07-31
I read this book because it was recommended by a friend as a "funny' book. As other readers have mentioned, indeed it does not take long to read but I found it completely stupid and with absolutely no point. I would never bother again reading another of this author's books.
STUPEUR ET TREMBLEMENTS.......2007-04-11
A wild, wonderful book! Would recommend "The Stranger Next Door" by the same author as even wilder!
Good things happen in French Literature.......2006-05-23
This young belgium writer - nominated by French Academy under her 30's, is one of the best contemporary french speaking writers. She has a strange sense of humour, an accurate aproach to FAR EAST culture (her father has been a dipomat in Japan and China,) and an extraordinary hability to build up plots on human miseries that arises disgust and empathy all together. I read all her books published in french, and I recommend them all. The ones I liked best are "La Métaphysique des tubes", "La sabotage amoreux", "Stupeur et Tremblements" and "Péplum".
Very funny.......2002-06-13
A very very funny book, where this girl tells us about her experience in a company in Asia ...
Very good sense of humor, using which she describes how she went from an intern to the person who cleans the toilets, just because she didnt understand the 'confusianism' of Asian people
really good book, if you can read it in french ...
Enjoy your reading !!

Customer Reviews:
The Emerald Dagger.......2007-07-14
The Emerald Dagger is the second book in the Daradawn Series. In the first book of this series, The Blue Flame, the reader is introduced to the magical world of Daradawn and its inhabitants. The reader is also introduced to four visitors to Daradawn: Kelsey Cafferty, her sister Regan, Regan's friend Ben Sampson, and Maggie the dog. These four visitors have travelled to Daradawn to our world through a magical gateway between the two dimensions. These four outsiders join forces with Queen Tessa and her allies to defeat the evil power hungry mage Dirkk.
In The Emerald Dagger, the evil mage Dirkk comes out of hiding and readies his plans for world domination once again. This time, through a powerful demon confined within a magical dagger, Dirkk intends to enslave various races and use them against Queen Tessa and her allies. With this plan accomplished, Dirkk then intends to take Regan as his Queen, with the two of them ruling all of Daradawn. Once again, the inhabitants of Daradawn call upon their allies from our world, those living in Daradawn and those coming to visit the magical world as the mystical rift between our worlds opens once again.
The Emerald Dagger, like the preceding book The Blue Flame, is beautifully written, contains wonderfully well developed characters, and so action filled that it defies the reader to put down the book before the story is read. If anything, the reader will find The Emerald Dagger is better and even more compelling than the first book of this series, mainly due to the fact that the reader has already bonded with the characters and already understands the nature of this magical world. Though I highly recommend reading The Blue Flame before reading The Emerald Dagger, book two of this series is completely self-contained and the reader need not read the first book to comprehend what is happening.

A Modern Judas.......2007-06-28
Donald Walters (formally known as Kriyananda) is a modern Judas.
Here you have a man, who only spent 3 years with Paramahansa Yogananda.
He joined the Self-Realization Fellowship (the organization Yogananda founded) Monastic Order in 1949 (Paramhansaji went into mahasamadhi in 1952).
He attains great spiritual heights, and even became a vice president for a short period of time.
Unfortunately, he felt he was better than disciples who were with Yogananda in the early 20's.
Walters was secretly trying to take control of the organization Yogananda founded (Self-Realization Fellowship). During in India, he was having sexual relations with women (as a monk he had taken a vow of celibacy) and was getting into big trouble with the Indian government. He also sold Sri Yukteswars ashram secretly.
Why would you take spiritual instruction from such a person? Even Kamala (Yogananda's Kriya Archarye since the 20's) said Kriyananda modified Yogananda's teachings.
So Walters was kicked out of SRF, and formed his own group called Ananda in the image of Self-Realization Fellowship. Now he is claiming the only way to get to God is through him, and the only way to get to Yogananda is through him.
This guy even now is having trouble with the law. He was banned from America and went to Italy. In Italy, the police were after him so he is now in India.
Did I mention he was married 6 times?
Even now, hundreds of his followers have taken him to court for sexual assault.
If you wanted Yogananda's teachings, where better to go? Why not go to the source. Why not go to the true place where Yogananda's teaching is being taught (The Self-Realization Fellowship)?
An Essential Guidebook to the Study and Practice of Yoga.......2006-05-10
This course is jam-packed with helpful insights into every aspect of the study and practice of Hindu yoga. No matter where you are in your yoga practice-beginner, intermediate, or advanced-this book and audio set will enhance your enjoyment and understanding. The Art and Science of Raja Yoga was drafted and produced by someone who really knows his business. Mr. Walters presents the history and essential teachings of yoga, the postures themselves, and even yogic dietary information in a clear and comprehensive manner. No other yoga handbook that I have seen comes close to this one. It contains everything one needs to master the subject. This is an essential guidebook for anyone interested in yoga.
A superb guide to yoga...........2005-06-26
This book is divided into 14 steps and each step is further divided into 7 subjects. The subjects are philosophy, yoga postures, breathing, routine, healing, diet and meditation. This enables the reader to understand the philosophy and purpose of the yoga postures more deeply. The only complaint I have about this book is that it was unable to go into a deeper detail about the yoga postures! But I guess that the author was forced to keep his book "short" because of space constraints.
The author's guru, Paramhansa Yogananda(who is also my divine guru) gave little emphasis on hatha yoga and more emphasis on kriya yoga. This is understandable because Yogananda simply did not have the time to dive deeper into the practices of hatha yoga. When J. Donald Walters told his Guru that there is nothing much more to write about, our Guru told him "There is MUCH MORE to be written!" Thus kriyananda has been following his Guru's advice and has written over seventy books which compliments Yogananda's teachings.
It is a grave mistake to think that the books published by SRF is the ONLY true teachings of Yogananda. This will undoubtly lead to dogmatism. Books by Kriyananda, Norman Paulsen, Roy Eugene Davis and other diciples of Yogananda complements the books published by SRF. Yogananda never intended SRF to be an exclusive sect and Kriyananda(who is a very sincere disiple) has taken the teachings of Yogananda to a deeper level.
This book is highly recommended to those who are interested in living a more spiritual life and are not recommended to people who are filled with hatred over the author. SRF students who are open-minded, would find this book useful for their own spiritual development.
A First Rate Personal Investment w/ Big Dividends!.......2004-03-20
This is a very helpful, and enlightening manual on the art of yoga - more specifically, "Raja Yoga" which is a balanced and comprehensive approach to yoga practice. Knowing very little about yoga, but wanting to blend meditation with physical exercise on my own at home, I found an old record called "Yoga for Self Awareness" by Sri Kriyananda. It's a four sided set that includes a full hour and a half of yoga postures, meditation, and chants. It was pretty easy to follow along at first, but I realized that I desired to learn more and wanted to be sure I was doing the postures correctly. I was pleasantly surprised to find "Raja Yoga" by Kriyananda (aka Donald Walters) on Amazon, and ordered it right away.
The manual is divided into 14 chapters, each chapter into 7 subsets: Philosophy, Postures, Breathing, Routine, Healing, Diet, and Meditation - all treated with equal gravity, although meditation does figure prominantly throughout Raja Yoga. Yoga is rooted in religion, and so if meditation and religious sentiment don't appeal to you, you might just want to go find a local "hatha" yoga class at the YMCA, or gym. However, I will say that if you open yourself up to the basic philosophy presented here, and surrender skepticism towards Kriyananda's medical advice (which seems rather incredulous at times) you'll find yourself believing instead of doubting. The world is full of mystery (travel and see for yourself!), and to perpetually wrap oneself up in self-protective doubt is unproductive, and ultimately, harmful to spiritual (and physical) growth. Skepticism, okay; but yoga teaches one to trust, and open oneself up to incredible possibilities, and I think this lesson in itself makes Raja Yoga invaluable. I too didn't think I'd be able to do half of these postures when I first listened to the record (the cd that comes with the book is its one mediocre flaw, as it only contains an abbreviated version of the Yoga Postures record I found, along with a lecture by Kriyananda that you may or may not find inspiring. You don't need an audio supplement to do yoga, but it really helps to hear Kriyananda's magnetic voice. I suggest contacting the "student support" e-mail address provided in the introduction for records and cds).
Once you begin reading and practicing you'll quickly became impressed with just how comprehensive and easy to use "The Art & Science of Raja Yoga" is. I was able to jump right in and start making yoga a part of my daily routine. Ever since doing so, I've been amazed how my health and overall mind-set has strengthened to the point that I feel more balanced, positive, and in tune with nature. You will be too - enjoy!
Best Yoga Book I've Ever Read...........2003-02-14
....and I've read alot of them.
Art and Science of Raja Yoga has everything from easy beginner routines, to more advanced postures. And this book doesn't make you feel like some couch potato just because you can't do advanced pretzel poses.
I also enjoyed the pranayama breathing exercises and meditation practices. I had never 'got' meditation until I began practicing some of the simple meditation techniques in this book.
You can also contact the publishers of the book for followup support with your practices- everything from retreats, to other books, and more. I've never, ever heard of anything like this. Check it out!
Book Description
Good country ham is a delicacy that deserves to be in gourmet company. Dry cured with salt and other natural ingredients and aged to a rich intensity, true country ham boasts a flavor and texture that puts the more common wet-cured ham, which is soaked in brine or injected with a salt solution, to shame.
This book celebrates country ham's colorful culinary past and its continued close ties with life across the South. Jeanne Voltz and Elaine Harvell discuss the lore and history of country ham; walk the reader through buying, preparing, and serving a country ham; and present some 70 recipes for country ham and its accompaniments. The book also features a glossary and a list of sources for ordering country hams.
Customer Reviews:
Everything You Needed To Know about Country Ham.......2000-03-26
I was practically weaned on country ham but until I bought a copy of Jeanne Voltz's book on country ham, I never appreciated the nuances that distinguish one country ham from another, the differences in the curing, the smoking (not to mention the type of wood used for the smoking), the aging and storing. Voltz explains all of this in detail, provides mail order sources for country hams, then dishes up a fabulous variety of country ham recipes. This is definitely the definitive book on the subject of country hams.

A concise study of British architectural color.......2006-09-06
There is a steady balance between the near ancient and contemporary and is carefully catalogued in this small, colorful book. It is a simple catalog only in its design, and it is packed with easy to read information about the history of British architecture: the colors, materials, context (both within British history and accompanying styles elsewhere) and building types. Of special note is a detailed color history of housing exteriors and its application. This book may be of special concern to theatre and cinema scenic designers and production artists since there are well over one hundred detailed color drawings to scale with accompanying notes as to exterior color, material, location, date, etc. While this work may be on the literary level of an architect, it is a passionate work written by an author and modified by his son who loves history and the understanding that the house is truly a home with a record of those who lived in it.

Book Description
When conventional treatment failed, Susan Heisler turned to creativity as a defense against madness. Using art and poetry, she struggled from mental illness to recovery. This personal narrative is richly illustrated with Susan's sometimes chilling and sometimes charming drawings.
Customer Reviews:
There's Hope.......2000-11-01
Sue Heisler has emerged from a very deep darkness. She never gave up on herself. She searched everywhere for answers; searched with all her heart, and has proved to all of us that there is hope. She tried all the methods, and then went beyond it all into a new place of healing for her soul and spirit. Well done!
Drawing and Coloring for your Life.......2000-10-21
Susan has drawn her spirit. Drawings with feelings always touch the soul.
To the readers...........2000-10-21
This book offers a chance for you, the reader, to become empowered to take control of your life. Sue eloquently and vividly points out that if only one side of a person is treated, then the treatment is not complete. Sue shares how she learned each person is a triad - body, soul, and spirit. To treat one and not the other two is like having only one leg on a three-legged stool; it will soon tip over. Mark Lanyon, MHS, CAAC, Brandywine Counseling Service
Articulating Your Pain.......2000-10-21
I have just finished your book and wanted to let you know how I felt about it. The thing that most struck me about the book was your ability to articulate the feeling and depth of your own suffering in such a readable style. The experiences you write about are more universal than people realize. It's amazing to me that you could continue to search in the midst of so many negative influences. It makes me realize how very important a supportive partner is in the mental health of the other partner. Although I didn't know you during most of this time, I feel that now, having read your words, I can recognize the new person I do know as one who is stronger and more complete for the work she has done. Donald M. Pruden, Executive Director, Center for the Creative Arts
I loved your book.......2000-10-21
I just finished reading your book last night - I loved it. It was beautiful. I don't think I've ever read anything so open and honest before. It was very inspiring and encouraging to experience your pain and struggles with you and to be brought into healing. Your story brings hope to us all. Your side columns are incredible. Even though most were written in prose, it's some of the best poetry I've ever read. Very haunting! I love your art work. With one glance, one can grasp the emotions in your pictures. Shocking, Entertaining & Insightful.......2004-08-17
As you read this biography, Larry Getlen will paint the picture of "the making of a pop princess" from the pitfalls to the evolving "not that innocent" young girl. From the files of the National Enquirer there are details on Britney's childhood, love-life, music, performances, and much more to enjoy!
From a critical point of view, I found the overall writings of this book to be too one-sided toward the author's thinking at certain points. There were times I stopped on a page and thought to myself, "No, this is not my opinion!"
As a former Mousketter, Britney's training shows [as so does Christina Aguilera's and Justin Timberlake's] however, the author repeatedly mentions Britney's lip synching, or lack of appreciation for her fans. And even comments on her "boobs". In an age were beautifying oneself is so crucial I don't see the point in making such an issue of this as I also don't agree that her clothes or her movements convey sexual references in the way Larry mentions. As a former dancer myself, I can say the industry of the dance world does not wear layers of clothing to dance. And the fact is that dancing is an art that few posess as well as Britney. She may be changing her style but I think that's a great step toward a new era of her life. It is apparent Britney is reaching more fans of all ages with her new 'persona'. I am happy to say as a big Madonna and Christina fan that now I am a big Britney fan too [and I'm not a teenager].
I enjoyed all the information on her past lovers as I could relate to all her "bad boy" choices as well as her "not so good" hanging-out friends. Most average young adults who are popular go through those things so here again I don't see why Larry paints such a dark picture. If an average teen doesn't live life and learn from his or her mistakes then he or she just isn't living or learning. Part of growing up is taking risks and Britney has proven that those are the qualities that make her into the successful over-achiever that she is and the down-to-earth person so many love. So again, Larry looses me.
On the whole, if the author would have put a more positive spin with reinforcements of the good qualities Britney has he would have succeeded in making the average fan or reader see a nicer Britney. But then again, the title of this book is NOT THAT INNOCENT. He definitely succeeds in reinforcing that throughout the entire book. So pick this book, sit back and just enjoy. I read this book in a few hours [I couldn't put the book down for a second]. It is a nice small paperback size to take to the beach or just snuggle in bed with it. I highly recommend it!
Britney from all angles.......2004-01-13
In writing Britney: Not That Innocent, Larry Getlen was about 90% successful at creating an objective portrayal of Britney Spears. That is, if you love Britney, you will probably enjoy all the detailed information the book provides, but first you will have to learn to ignore the unobjective, condescending remarks about Britney that Getlen, an apparent non-fan, occasionally lets slip through the cracks of his professionalism. (If you only have a passing interest in Britney, the remarks probably won't bother you.) Truly, however, serious fans of Britney should be brave - the book really is an amazing account of Britney's career thus far, not just step by step, but inch by inch. The book provides details upon details of both Britney's successes and controversies - a must-have, I think, for anyone who wants to know everything he or she can know about Britney and what makes that intriguing girl tick. The book covers Britney's entire career up until just before the release of In The Zone, so of course, and unfortunately, there are no comments about the success of the album's #1 debut(Britney's 4th in a row) or the new controversies of "the kiss" and "the marriage." I read the book myself from cover to cover in about three hours, and, even though Getlen didn't always portray Britney in a good light, I still came away from the book liking her no less and actually feeling sorry for the way too many unjustified rumors have been spread about her by others. This book reminded me that yes, Britney has made a few mistakes, but also that everybody makes mistakes, and that she has been unfairly exploited by the friend-or-foe media, who, through their camera lenses, watch like a hawk every move she makes, leaving her no room for error(even though to err is human). If I could have given it 4.5 stars, I would have, for Getlen's occasional discrepancies, but since it was such an interesting and informative read, I give Britney: Not That Innocent a five. Anyone very interested in Britney Spears really ought to give this book a try.
Britney Revealed.......2003-11-20
There's been a lot written about Britney Spears, but Wild Thing eschews the usual sugary PR to reveal what really makes the sexy pop icon tick -- both good and bad. It's a fascinating read as author Getlen peels away the glitz to show us both Britney the person and Britney the mega personality. This is a must-read for anyone who's even mildly interested in Britney Spears or the pop-music machine that made her a superstar.
